MARCH ON..........

F

irst and foremost, I would have to apologise for the delayed release of this issue. It’s been a rather crazy few months for me personally and I have to thank my team for keeping down the fort. Now, on to the big stuff. It’s March, International Women’s Day and God only knows what other special days are in store. I think I saw something about #myfreedomday somewhere but that’s another topic for another time. With all these ’special days’ coming up and everyone posting empowering messages, especially women empowerment messages, it got me thinking, are we really marching on? Despite having a whole day dedicated for women’s empowerment, has the world really changed to do something about the issue? Or do we just pump our chest on one day and forget about it the next? In my humble opinion, whilst it’s nice to have a day dedicated for women, it should not stop there. We shouldn’t get caught in the “hallmark” of the day. Just today I stumbled upon an article about a bunch of young men caught humping the ‘Fearless Girl’ statue in Wall Street. And I thought firstly that’s rape culture and secondly, have we really, truly changed the world? The answer, sadly is no and there are a bunch of examples to show that which my team and I will be exploring online soon. In the meantime, ladies.....keep on marching!

Amirab showcased its second collection of modest clothing for Muslim women, at the first ever London Modest Fashion Week at the weekend.

Inspired by the silhouettes of the swinging 60s and elements of Jackie Kennedy’s wardrobe, the 15 piece collection incorporates this season’s key trends with exaggerated waists, colour blocks in rich blue hues and super-shine silk.

Founder and designer Roda Abdi commented: “There are very few brands creating luxury modest wear in the UK so I started Amirab to cater for this market. Muslim women love fashion just as much as any other woman and we believe they should have access to stylish clothing without having to compromise their beliefs or principles. The amazing Bushra, founder of iiLA, had a vision to create pieces that people could see themselves actually wearing, combining modesty with trends and real life!

odest Fashion designers are on the rise and iiLA’s success cannot be ignored. A simple yet stylish modest wear brand that proves modesty comes in all forms. We had the pleasure of seeing iiLA and their fabulous founder Bushra at London Modest Fashion week, amongst many other beautiful designers. A collection ranging from earth tone georgette hijabs, silk open drapes and all the modest classics. 12

The show-stopping drape, iiLA’s most unique piece. The combination of a silk digital print with a black panel screams sophistication. This was definitely my favourite piece from the collection, I’ve seen nothing as gorgeous!

13

Showcased on the runway as a casual outfit, perfect for the soon coming summer! Paired with a statement-shirt quoting ‘we are queens’ expressing our female modesty power! The ways to dress this drape are endless, as discussed you can go for a chic casual look with a cotton maxi skirt and matching georgette gray hijab, a perfect morning look! And of course, with the night comes sophistication, close up the drape and tie into an effortless bow, pair it with some gorgeous black heels, and perhaps a dark taupe georgette hijab! The wide sleeves on the drape are the wow factor, which means that you can go simple on the accessories.

14

Another piece down the runway by iiLA, and another of my favourites. Pastels are coming through this spring, and this dress is perfect! A lace top and a chiffon bottom giving the dress more depth. The lace is scattered with sequins and beading making it easy to wear for any occasion. What’s even better is that it is 100% modest, covering the arms without the need of an undergarment, making our lives much easier!

15

This super casual outfit is perfect for the summer breeze! And yes, aztec pants are back on trends! Paired with a split chiffon black shirt and a teal hijab it’s an ideal outfit for those who like match making their clothes! Loose clothing is the way to go this summer, for comfort and style!

16

More often we are seeing much more simple outfits, and more effort put into the accessories, such as bags and jewelry. Here we have a simple taupe blouse matched with a super cute and oriental clutch. Red bags are definitely the cutest, especially when paired with floral or natural designs. Another part of the accessories in this outfit is the tribal necklace, again a signature look! We loved the iiLA collection and we hope to see them again at LMFW 2018. Thank you for having us!

BLACKED OUT

There are a lot of women who like to wear black, simply because it’s slimming. But being that wearing all black, from head to toe, is currently a fashion trend, we think it’s about more than taking off a couple of pounds.

Written by Mumtahana Elahi

B

lack symbolizes elegance, power and even a hint of mystery. And we’re all for women representing all three of these things! That’s why I wanted to take a black timeless piece of clothing and show you how to incorporate it into an all-black look that will be nothing but stunning. I love an all-black look. Any time I want to add some edge or when I don’t know 19

what to wear, I opt for all black. I'm sharing a few tips on how to style an all-black look effortlessly. The beautiful contrast of the muted shades in an all-black abaya was the reason I picked it from the racks of S C I C C O S O. It is very simple, with no bling, lightweight, just the perfect kind of pullover you'd want as an easy wrap-up.

HOW TO WEAR ALL BLACK Stay away from heavy fabrics. We’re sure you’ve been told again and again to stay away from big pieces covered in faux leather, velvet and heavy fabric when it’s hot. They’re thick which makes them great for keeping in warmth during winter but horrible during summer as the texture is also great for becoming a make-shift heater. Pick lightweight, flowy and cool fabrics when it comes to picking an abaya. Keep your outfit lose. Black is known to absorb the heat in summer. Despite that, the wrong concept that prevails is, "girl, don't you feel hot under that abaya?" The answer is, no. When you keep your outfit lose, it allows air to flow and nothing is more comfortable than a black abaya.

20

Try layering, but only layer sleeveless things. The thought of layering clothes during the summer can make even the strongest woman weep. But just in case you don't want to button up your abaya, you can wear a jersey sleeveless maxi dress underneath. And it doesn't look that bad.

21

Add accessories. By pairing a colored accessory with an all-black look, it keeps it from feeling too dark. Think a gold watch, a black or neutral scarf, a gold sling bag, or a pair of gladiators like I’ve selected. Your color doesn’t have to be bright either. I love adding a little bit of gold to black abayas, it makes the look more regal.

22

Let your toes breath. Your feet are going to get warm enough, especially with black sandals. Stay away from shoes that will cage your toes in and let them breathe. Choose open-toe shoes for summer to get rid of sweaty feet.

23

On top of everything, be bold and brave. And win the world with the most beautiful curve of your body; your smile.

A

s Fashion is a form of expression, I cannot resist but incorporate Dandy fashion, even little varied details, in my outfits. Winter is ending, and I feel so inspired by vintage to style my next looks. I love Dandy fashion, and especially the mix of old vintage pieces with a modern and personal touch. For that reason, I chose this classy outfit:

25

I’m wearing a classy wide leg pant, on the top of which I added a striped shirt and a long sleeveless waistcoat.

26

For this vintageinspired look, I thought of a soft color palette: a grey pant, brown stockings, a light beige waistcoat, a nude striped shirt, and an olive green scarf to style my turban.

27

And, because it’s all in the details, I added leather accessories: a watch with leather straps, my handmade leather bag from Morocco,...

...and, last but not least, those camel Oxford shoes!

Oh of course, I almost forgot this very minimalistic piece of jewelry (a golden rose bracelet and ring), and my super transparent umbrella.

edress kicks off their biggest search ever for the best sustainable fashion talent with the launch of the 2017 cycle of the EcoChic Design Award, the world’s largest sustainable fashion design competition.

that there is a more sustainable future of fashion. Until 3 April 2017, designers residing in Asia, Europe and the USA can enter via ecochicdesignaward.com to compete for a chance to travel to Hong Kong in September 2017 to present their textile-waste reducing designs.

With continued support from Create Hong Kong, Redress strives to prove

brand borne from Redress’ work, which will retail on B Y T’s future e-commerce site and at Lane Crawford, Asia’s leading iconic luxury department store. Dr. Christina Dean, Founder and Board Chair of Redress and B Y T explained, “Now is the time for radical disruption to the fashion industry, from education, design, sourcing to business. Without this, the fashion and textile industry, which is currently the world’s second biggest polluter, and the environment will spiral even more out of control, with dire consequences. 35

Instead, through the EcoChic Design Award and B Y T we are galvanizing the industry to the look at the current problems we face as opportunities. Those who don’t find new ways of operating will not make it through the seismic changes happening in fashion today.” Environmental NGO Redress has a mission to reduce textile waste through various programs in order to protect the environment whilst also offering unique business opportunities.

EcoChic Design Award 2015/16 1st Prize Winner Patrycja Guzik

Globally, textile waste has increased dramatically due to the rise in clothing consumption and production: the number of new garments produced annually now exceeds 100 billion – double the amount from 2000; annual waste estimates suggest that China generates over 26 million tonnes of industry and consumer textile waste worth 60 billion RMB; and the European Union creates 9.4 billion tonnes of textiles that are either landfilled or incinerated. 36

This 2017 EcoChic Design Award cycle saw a phenomenal industry response to the recent distribution of the new Sustainable Fashion Educator Pack to teach the next generation about how to reduce waste. Additionally, Redress has expanded their online educational content to reach new global audiences and is conducting Fashion Academies in Asia, with particular focus on the clothing and textile export powerhouses of China and India.

EcoChic Design Award Ambassador Bonnie Chen wearing Kévin Germanier

Designers wishing to participate in the Award must incorporate the sustainable design techniques of zero-waste, upcycling and reconstruction into their designs, sourcing their own textile waste for use in their collections, which will be judged by a prestigious line-up of global fashion leaders from Asia, Europe and USA, including designers Christopher Ræburn and Johanna Ho, and industry experts Orsola de Castro, Anderson Lee and Roger Lee. 37

The prizes will be announced during the Grand Final fashion show at HKTDC’s CENTRESTAGE in early September 2017. Along with designing for B Y T, other prizes will be announced. Visit the website by tapping the icons below for more information.

this month’s S

adly, every amazing product comes to an end, and it's usually because we loved it a little too much! Today I’m sharing with you my empties for this month and why I’m going back to buy more! These are some of my favourites so I’m sure you’ve seen them before!

Written by Naira Ghanem

38

MILANI PRIME SHIELD FACE PRIMER

For those with combination to oily skin, you really need a primer that's going to stay all day, without patching your foundation or getting an oily face! This primer mattifies and reduces the appearance of pores, giving you all day flawless foundation! How long does it last? I would say I used this every day for a good 3 months, and it's my 4th bottle, so you know it's good! There is quite a bit of product waste because you can't get into the bottle. But what I always do to make the most of products, is just cut of the nozzle, and you’ll find so much more product left inside!

39

M.A.C PREP + PRIME SKIN CORRECTOR

Now I wish I had found out about this product a long time ago! If you have dark circles under your eyes and looking for the perfect colour corrector. This is the one! Unlike other orange colour correctors e.g. LA Girl orange corrector, this pigment is much more natural, it gives you great coverage without being too orange! Meaning you can conceal the orange quite easily, or sometimes you don't need concealer at all! The application is super easy and I've used it every day for about 4 months! There is no waste when it comes to this, because it's a tube inside that is compressed until every single drop is gone! So I’m definitely going to get more of this product! 40

NARS

AUDACIOUS LIPSTICK

This was the first ever high end lipstick I purchased, it was my favourite two years ago and it still is! I could go on about the shade, texture and colour forever! And it’s sad to say that I’ve used it all up, I never thought I would actually finish a whole lipstick! The shade is a perfect pink that matches my olive complexion, the coverage is an amazing creamy matte, and it’s such an easy colour to go for everyday! I usually use it with Mac lip liner Soar, or Laura Mercier lip liner Mulberry. I’ve found it hard to find the exact shade with any other brand, so I’m sticking to NARS for life!

41

NARS

RADIANT CREAMY CONCEALER

Everyone loves this concealer, it's creamy, got great coverage and doesn't crease! I think this might be my 4th bottle because I can’t find anything to replace it! They have a huge range of shades, personally I use ginger. It lasts about 2-3 months depending on how often and how much you use it. The coverage is so good that sometimes I don't have to colour correct before applying it! 42

CLARINS LOTUS FACE TREATMENT OIL

This was a product I initially purchased when I was treating my oily skin. You apply it at night to hydrate the skin and provide it with natural oils, this aided in the process of reducing the skin's normal oil production. Honestly the results were amazing and within 3 months my oily skin had reduced and become combination. During the first 3 months I would use this every day, and from then once a week. One bottle lasted me 6 months. Even though I don’t have oily skin anymore, the oil is still an essential part of my skin care routine especially after exfoliating. I love it so much I’m on my 3rd bottle!

43

We all have our favourite products that we can’t get enough of, it’s usually the essentials that we use daily. I’m yet to actually use up a whole eyeshadow palette, and it doesn’t look like it’s happening any time soon! So I’m off to repurchase these amazing products, see you guys later!

BEAUTY EDITOR: NAIRA GHANEM Hey I’m Naira, just an ordinary student with big dream! Whether its fashion, make up or daily life, join me on my journey. Whether big or small, we can take on the world, with a pretty face and a pretty heart.

WHY NIKE’S PRO HIJAB ISN’T that REVOLUTIONARY

D

on’t get us wrong. We applaud Nike for taking the leap into catering for our Muslim sisters in sports. We’re all for inclusion and the more variety we, as Muslim sisters have, the better. Good on you, Nike. But what we won’t do is let this Nike limelight cast a shadow over the tons of other Muslimah active-wear labels that were born from...yes, you guessed it, our own Muslim sisters. Long before Nike took the leap, many of our Muslim sisters were left with wearing the daily 45

hijab. Not a very good option when you’re running, hiking or doing yoga, trust us. Because of that gap in the market, some of our Muslim sisters took it upon themselves to provide a better alternative. Hence, brands like Anah Maria Active, Capsters, Nashata, Oola Sports (just to name a few),..were born. These brands have been in the market for quite some time but sadly haven’t received the same fanfare as Nike.

Anah Maria Active

So when some media outlets call Nike’s move something “finally” representing Muslim women, we step back and step forward to say, well not exactly...it’s not “finally”. We have already been represented by these other brands. Ok, we’ll give credit where credit is due. The good thing though is that Nike has tag-teamed with Muslim female athletes on their Pro Hijab. Unlike some other brands who pretty much assume what Muslim women need and want. We applaud Nike for inclusion but we as consumers, Muslim women no less, should give more attention to our own rather than large conglomerates.

Oola Sports

46

In the past, we’ve had D&G, Mango, Zara, etc jumping on to the modest fashion market and again, while we applaud, recognize and appreciate the inclusion by these major brands, let us not forget that there are other Muslimown brands who started this all way before them.

protect your hands from

Written by Stoori Khan

W

ith the passing days and years, you get very concerned about aging and search for a variety of products and treatments to protect your face from looking older but have you ever noticed that your hands also need the same care as your face? Due to continuous use of water, soaps, hand sanitizers and exposure to different environmental conditions, the skin of your hands may appear older than that of your face when you age. Here are some tips to prevent your hands from aging.

51

Apply a thick cream, lotion or moisturizer, especially the one containing aloe vera on your hands. Aloe vera possesses excellent antiaging properties.Â

52

Use the same products for your hands as you apply on your face, i.e. an anti-oxidant in the morning and a gentle retinol cream at night.

53

Exposure to the sun reduces skin thickness, collagen and elasticity so reapply sunscreen on your hands as much as you can.

54

As we age, hands tend to lose fat, therefore, try using Juvederm or Restylane to plump the skin on the back of your hands and camouflage the veins

#FINANCIALGOALS Written by

As we enter 2017, it is a good idea to start setting financial goals for the year. This can help ease your financial burden while growing your wealth. Just like New Year resolutions, don’t shoot for the moon. Your short -term financial goals should be realistic. This will help you to be more focused and motivated.

56

H

aving long-term financial goals is important. You should save for the future to prepare for large spending next time. This may include the purchase of a house, funding for your children’s higher education, or spending during retirement.

Unfortunately, it is easy to lose sight of these broad goals as we normally focus on the immediate term. This often makes it more difficult to achieve long-term goals. As an example, a long-term goal of retiring early can’t be met if you keep spending above your means. 57

By setting short-term financial goals, it will make it easier for you to achieve long-term ones. Small gradual and specific steps are required to achieving something big. Short-term goals are those we want to achieve in the next 1-2 years. These include paying for your children’s monthly school fees, paying your income tax, or saving up for a holiday trip. We list down four key steps in successfully meeting these goals.

1. Prioritise

4. Invest your savings

Write down your short-term financial goals and rank them in importance. This will help you prioritize and stay committed to the most important ones first.

Putting your savings in bank, while safe, can reduce your wealth. This is because the returns offered by banks are often lower than the inflation rate (the rate at which the price of everyday goods increase). As such, consider using your savings to fund investments offering better returns.

2. Budget Once you have prioritized your shortterm goals, start budgeting. A weekly or monthly budget lets you recognize your spending habits and adjust them to cut unnecessary expenses. You can easily overspend on food, transport, and entertainment if left unchecked. 3. Save After budgeting, set aside a portion of your excess income for savings. We recommend having a separate bank account for this. Make sure you’re saving enough by setting up regular automated transfers from your main bank account to your savings account. 58

Make sure your investments are aligned to your financial goals. Those earmarked for short-term goals should be put in investments with short-term tenure so you can easily liquidate if needed. Finding short-term investments with attractive returns, however, may not be easy. Those that potentially offer high returns may be volatile (e.g. equity) or are largely reserved for high net-worth individuals. We also caution on getting involved in get-rich-quick schemes which are often too good to be true.

Short-term Investing via Crowdfunding Crowdfunding is becoming an increasingly popular avenue for shortterm investing for small investors. Crowdfunding is when a large group of investors come together to fund a business project. The funding is done online to provide simplicity, transparency, and increased accessibility by investors globally. By funding businesses, investors are offered attractive returns on their investments. Investors are also doing good by helping the growth of SMEs – a backbone of most communities. However, do note that crowdfunding SMEs do come with risks, just like any other investments. It is important that you’re aware of these. They include payment delays, or a potential default by the SME borrower or crowdfunding platform.

59

Understand the Business To reduce risks, we advise investors to carefully analyse the borrower and understand the business they are investing in. Ensure that the crowdfunding platform provides sufficient information for you to make a well-informed investment decision. If not, ask for additional information. Also ensure that you are investing via a credible and transparent crowdfunding platform.

Diversification Another smart way to reduce investment risk is through diversification. Instead of putting all your investment in one crowdfunding campaign, it is wiser to spread it across multiple campaigns. This way should one of the businesses you funded defaults, you may still be able to earn positive returns on your total investment. 60

Keeping It Simple Many people make overly ambitious goals every New Year. These often end up unmanageable and unachievable. Set your financial goals but keep it small and simple. This will help you stick to them till the end of the year and eventually realise your long-term goals. Here’s wishing you a great year ahead.

Interested in crowdfunding? Kapital Boost offers investors like you shortterm crowdfunding investment opportunities. Help fund SMEs and earn attractive returns. Check out some of the campaigns we have done and register with us to receive news of future crowdfunding opportunities.
