Ideas for incorporating the stairs into the structure. Use the same curving wall as for petals, but without developing the flap, just to suport stairs.SW corner entrance could also extend the curving wall to create a mor suggestive entrance to the groundfloor lobby, veiling the opening and forcing to go around the wall to discover it.
SPORTS COMPLEX INDIA
01 TASK
To design tennis stadium, sports facilities, relaxing and recreation spaces. Problem solving, Concept, design, Construction
Extending the idea of the curving walls to every stair and access. Maybe extrude them up to the roof at points to substitute present vertical structure. (Similar to Bond University.)
A C C E S S E S: petals and stairs
A tilt of the platform to create space for high linear window. Also works as half-railing, helped by cable mesh with climbing plants. Mesh prevents people from falling off platform; plants filter light.Natural light into changing rooms, option a: difused light from horizontal window and through second inside high opening.
OVERALL CONCEPTS
*
Tennis building Theme: on a concrete canvas Concept: using concrete as the main material, varying its texture to create distict atmospheres and pairing it with wood, copper/brass to balance it. Exposed structure carries the essence of the character of the building - curving surfaces, folding petals... Light and shade carefully worked on to provide both atmosphere and comfort.
Level 02 - VIP box Theme: soft, sleek, elegant Concept: curving walls, polished concrete, glass, wood accent, open terrace, vegetation, shade and breeze.
Level 01 - access platform and formal seating Theme: rough, natural, organic Concept: rough, natural concrete texture, copper cladding or accents, bright colours applied on concrete undersurfaces.
Ground floor - player area, tennis school, multipurpose hall Theme: light gradient Concept: filtered light through screens and trellises, dimming towards the inside. Concrete exposed structure, polished concrete floors, softening wood elements, brass/copper fixtures.
Western side
Natural light in changing rooms, option b: opening skylight directly onto space. skylight structure can incorporate seating on upper platform. Common spaces receive natural light from barnacles only.

SPORTS COMPLEX
1
Ground floor - player area, common spaces Theme: colourful barnacles Concept: slanted walls perforated by colourful barnacles. Ceiling slopes up to open a slit to let natural light in. Rough concrete texture, but polished floors. Light is coloured as it filters through the barnacles.

4 Ground floor - player area, changing rooms Dormitory references Theme: copper clad2 ding
3 Ground floor - tennis school Theme: coloured concrete Concept: some concrete surfaces are painted in bright colours. Light comes in through barnacles too. Bold, playful signage. Use of brick for partitions
4 Ground floor - multipurpose hall Theme: inside-outside Concept: separation between outside and inide is blurred. Space opens onto southern tenis fields though folding doors/screens. Buffer space to control southern light, but allow cool night breeze.

The scope includes the entrance gateway and tennis and cricket sports facility part of the masterplan. An elevated pedestrian walkway meanders into the site from the carpark. A series of swooping petals drop to the ground and elevate into the air providing shade and acting as marker elements to key areas of the site. The primary inhabited spaces are imbedded into the landscape so that the integrity of the petals are reinforced with a playful harmony to the landscape.

New Islington Borders covers an area of roughly 10 Acres and is bordered by the Ring Road to the south, the scenic, recreational landscape of Cotton Field Park to the north, Old Mill Street to the east, and the Rochdale Canal to the west. It marks the transition from the mixed commercial and residential development in the Piccadilly Basin and the Northern Quarter to the residential developments in Ancoats and New Islington. The site is situated in prominent location in close proximity to the City Centre and has easy access to transport facilities such as the train, tram and bus. Piccadilly Station, Victoria Station and Shudehill Interchange all lie within the 1500m radius of the site, less than a 15 minute walk from the site. Other notable buildings within the vicinity include recent social infrastructure such as the New Islington Free School and the Ancoats Primary Care Centre, historic structures such as Murray’s Mill, new residential projects such as Chips, NOMA and Piccadilly Gardens.

The site strategy was to take in the height and density of the historic buildings in Ancoats, which created a permeable urban wall to Great Ancoats Street, with buildings falling in height from west to east and towards the landscape of Cotton Field Park in New Islington. This results in three distinct planning zones which provide an indication of future phasing. They are largely rectilinear in its organization facing Ancoats, radial facing in the centre of the site and organic at the junction with Old Mill Street. Each zone has a dierent type of public space associated with it - namely, the Market Square, the Park and the Boulevard.

PUBLIC INTERVENTION AND street life Equal emphasis has been given to the quality of street life and the built environment, treating both aspects as important contributing factors to the overall experience within the site. After identifying the major issues and deducing that the vicinity is surrounded by inactive, monotonous spaces, often attracting a negative presence, an active pedestrian path has been used as a tool to uplift the area. The street, though car-free, remains a principal ordering device of the city, with the pedestrian playing the role of the key user. Through street furniture and retail, the street is transformed into a lively interface between the open social spaces and the built form.

STREET LIFE
MARKET SQUARE
“The trust of a city street is formed over time from many, many little public sidewalk contacts... Most of it is ostensibly trivial, but the sum is not trivial at all…” - Jane Jacobs
PROMENADE
PARK
Situated at the very north of the development, the Market Square captures the vitality of the bordering, historic district of Ancoats, being expressed in the community-driven stalls, with a sunken forum featuring pride of place within this inclusive addition to New Islington’s public realm. Being an area largely free from permanent street furniture, that would otherwise clutter this prized, paved space, the Market Square therefore has the capability of accommodating a sizeable influx of people during times of social gathering, and thus becoming New Islington’s welcoming showcase.

PARK Located in the centre of the development is the Park, being a multifunctional space for light recreation, exuding dynamism through the engagement of residents in playful activities, which itself appropriately draws its radiating energy from the streetscape it inhabits. In addition to the array of vegetation featured within this area, efforts have been made with reference to known landscaping techniques in which the topography is manipulated from a viewers perspective to make an otherwiseflat expanse more dramatic. To this end, the vertical components within the field of vision have been accentuated, namely through the clustering of taller vegetation on a small mound, and the positioning of a shallow, reflective pool to add visual depth.
PROMENADE Extending along the width of the southern portion of the site will be a promenade, of generous breadth, to facilitate gentle ambling and relaxed cycling, thus offering a slower pace of life, especially due to the bustling City Centre’s close proximity in which many residents might find themselves working. The linear arrangement of slender trees draw the eye along the extended pathway, encouraging movement towards the convergence of Cotton Field Park, as the trailing wanderer happens upon this natural gem, almost aimlessly; the arrangement of buildings being essential in opening up this broad vista.

ACTION FIELD
Can space truly be free?
As cities grow and expand, space has become an invaluable resource and often a commodity. As supply shrinks and demand increases at a staggering disproportion, the race between the public and private has perhaps never been more intense. What is the action plan to follow at the local level and globally?
