Words from the Publisher Junos, Bears, Drag Superstar, Calgary Expo, Hot Mess and more! By Steve Polyak Junos 2016 GayCalgary Magazine was thrilled to be welcomed, again, as the only LGBT media outlet accredited at the Junos this year. The first time was in 2008, when the Junos were held in Calgary. Our writer, Jason Clevett, had also received accreditation for GayCalgary Magazine when he was able to travel to other cities where the Junos were being hosted but, for me, this was my second time to be able to cover the event. Being at the Junos alongside a very select amount of major media from across Canada was pretty exciting. Jason was responsible for doing interviews during the media scrums while I was doing photos on the red carpets. While Jason was pretty much stuck behind a table, I was able to wander over to hear some of the winners being interviewed, and was proud to constantly hear Jason ask some great questions, which is one of the reasons why we have been welcomed back. Check out the photos on page 48.

Bearbash Bears, otters and admirers from throughout Alberta came to Calgary for the annual Bearaccus Bear weekend hosted between ARGRA and Fab Albearta. Friday and Sunday events were hosted at the Blind Monk and the main event, Saturday night, was at the Arrata Centre. It looked like, with the warm weather, that it was the most togas worn at the event since its inception four years ago. The last three years saw weather on the cold side. The year the event started there was a pretty bad blizzard, so this was a nice change. Check out the photos on page 43.

Alberta’s Next Drag Superstar For the past couple of months, Evolution Wonder Lounge in Edmonton has been doing preliminary drag competitions for Edmonton drag queens, and Cowboys Dance Hall in Calgary doing a preliminary drag competition for Calgary queens. So the best of the best battled it out at the finale for Alberta’s Next Drag Superstar, with host Jackie Beat, at Evolution. Each queen brought it with some amazing outfits, and stomped out great numbers. I never knew that some of the comedy numbers I have seen in the past from other drag queens were actually from Jackie Beat. Seeing her do it live – not lip syncing – floored me. Each time she was done on the microphone my face was sore from laughing so much. I can’t recall laughing so much at a drag show. At the end of the night, Lilith Fair had won the title of Alberta’s Next Drag Superstar, with

Calgary Expo The largest event that GayCalgary is proud to sponsor every year is the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo. This year was a little different for us. GayCalgary usually has a booth set up at the show so people can walk by and pick up back issues of the magazine. Since we don’t print hard copies anymore, it gave us a chance to actually check out the show when, in the past, I would have been stuck behind a table or running around doing interviews with talent. This year continued to reflect the Expo’s policy on inclusivity by welcoming a cosplayer, Alexa Heart, who is transgender. During the set-up for the interview, she expressed how amazing Calgary was. She had gone to other events where hotels refused to let her check in, and received transphobic comments. She said she did not have any issues at all here, and that the people from the Calgary Expo and attendees have been great. She was also excited to see that we were sponsors of

 From Previous Page the Expo and was hoping to bump into us at some point – so watch for the interview in an upcoming edition. It was pretty cool to see how many people from the LGBTQ community were in attendance. Several had dressed up for the event, while others were there just to check things out. Lots of vendors were even showing geek related LGBTQ products that you would not see typically sold in stores. The event boasted its second highest amount of people in attendance at 103,500, just shy by 500 of the record they set last year during their 10th Anniversary. Watch for interviews from the Calgary Expo rolled out over the next several months. For those who missed it, the Edmonton Comic and Entertainment Expo is happening in September. Photos on page 48.

Hot Mess On the Saturday night of the Calgary Expo weekend Hot Mess had a dance party at Flames Central. The night featured Alyssa Edwards from the fifth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. She performed alongside 17 dancers from Alberta Ballet, who showed off four excerpts of their production Love Lies Bleeding, which was developed with and based on Sir Elton John’s life. It was amazing to behold: this was not your typical drag number. Alberta Ballet was in full control of the lighting and stage visuals. Alyssa Edwards had only learned the choreography earlier in the afternoon, but you would have assumed she had been part of the regular cast; the performance was flawless. I had along with me Geisha Vi, a guest cosplayer brought up from the U.S.for the Calgary Expo. She heard that Alyssa Edwards was performing in Calgary and was excited that I was able to bring her down to the event. People enjoyed the opportunity to take photos with her in full attire and she too had a great time. Check out the photos on page 49.

Upcoming: 36th Annual Sandy Page Campout If you are looking to do something during the May long weekend and enjoy camping, I highly recommend the annual Sandy Page Campout. It runs from May 20th to 23rd this year. The event takes place in Wayne Alberta, just outside of Drumheller in a valley in the badlands, where there are only a couple of houses en route to the remaining 103-year-old hotel in this ghost town that used to be a coal mine. There are lots of RV and tent sites, with outdoor games happening throughout the weekend. There are also historical hiking trails around the valley to check out, where buildings used to be. This is pretty much a Gay Pride campout and everyone is welcome. Cost is only $30 per person – regardless if you are there for one night or for the whole weekend. Reservations are not needed: just show up. There are coin op showers on site, a fully functioning saloon and restaurant. Check out https://www.facebook.com/ events/617538701738376/ for details.

Fairy Tales Also starting on the May long weekend, running from May 20th to 28th, is the 18th Annual Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival at the Plaza Theatre in Calgary. Each night offers a different theme and a great selection of movies. Gala events will also take place at venues a short walking distance from the theatre in Kensington. Read more about the event on page 11.

Edmonton Pride From June 3rd to 12th, 2016, is Edmonton Pride. The Pride Parade and Festival occur on June 4th, but there are a large number events slated throughout the week. Just remember that Edmonton Pride has moved the parade to Whyte Ave, and the Street Festival to the End of Steel Park. Read more about the event on page 16.

The Unexpected Wonder of Fairy Tales Highlights from this year’s exciting line up

 3 to Infinity

By Carey Rutherford SOMETIMES, but not all the time, we start out with exactly the right question . . . “My name is James Demers, and I’m the executive director of the Fairy Tales Presentation Society. [This year’s] ‘most unexpected’ film, because we had a really interesting groundswell of support, is . . . a roller derby documentary called In The Turn. Roller derby documentaries have been shown at other festivals, but this one actually centres on an 11 year-old Canadian trans girl and her mother. This young girl, Crystal, came out as transgendered in a small, rural town in Ontario, and they were having a really hard time finding any support, especially community and familial support. So after Crystal was turned down for an athletic team, the roller derby community (which had a queer team in that town) basically adopted them. “Crystal joined the junior roller derby league, and the league itself is actually incredibly inclusive of LGBT individuals, and fairly fierce about it! So they became the support system for this single-parent family.” www.gaycalgary.com

James notes that, as the star is still only 13 and a little shy, the meet and greet after the film will be across the street at The Naked Leaf, a local tea shop which should be less intimidating for Crystal. The Calgary roller-derby community is sponsoring the screening and will be doing on-site tricks at the Plaza Theatre, the main venue for Fairy Tales’ films this year, from May 20th to 28th. “The story of Crystal and her mom have sort of percolated through the roller-derby community, so they’ve got this kind

of ‘internal celebrity’, where people are coming out of the woodwork to support them. [Calgary’s derby community] is taking her to the zoo while they’re here! . . . The response to the film is excellent, but the response that has been continuing to roll out for the two of them has been really quite touching.” “We’re [also] playing The Birdcage, the Robin Williams 35mm ’90s version. We do a retro queer film every year, [and] it will be on original film. The Plaza is one of the few theatres that can still play film, so we try to take advantage of that. “We’re ending [the festival, on the 28th] with an outdoor shorts package. It will be shown at the Oak Tree Tavern because they own the parking lot beside the bar. We’re bringing a giant Winnebago in, with a screen on one side, and then the after-party is in the cocktail bar right beside. “The last feature film of the festival is called Before the Last Curtain Falls. It’s also a documentary, that chronicles the aging demographic of drag queens and trans-identified performers in Berlin who are starting to leave show business in their 70s and 80s, and go into retirement, and they recall their lives as entertainers in both World War I and II. Basically, they were entertaining long before gay rights was a political issue, so it’s about the history of elders in the community who have seen and done it all, and where they’re ending up.” The films Fairy Tales features are mostly new productions from around the world, but another special screening will be in partnership with the Calgary Men’s Chorus, joining in on a Grease sing-along, complete with the on-screen bouncing ball. In their focus on community-building, Fairy Tales is also creating “Queer Adults Read Things They wrote in the 12

Closet”, which has had a very successful response to its original straight version around Canada and the U.S. “The premise is, you have to have written it under the age of 18, it has to be five minutes or less, and you have to be willing to say it in front of an audience. So we’re looking for love letters, diary entries, emails: anything you wrote as a kid that has a relevance to your identity, or coming out, or levels of self-realization. It can be funny, it can be sad, it can be embarrassing, but it’s about being able to look back on our thoughts as kids in the community. And, if you’re waiting somewhat impatiently for info about MOVIES, not nostalgia, not docs, not kink or roller skaters (there’s a lot going on here!), James notes, casually, that they have scored the North American premiere of Holding the Man, which is, quite simply, a gay male romance from Australia. “It’s beautiful, and really, really well done. . . The film is NOT focussed on someone coming out: it’s focussed on the long-term relationship of the two male lead characters. . . It starts in the mid-’80s, and goes right up to the present day, so you see them going through a variety of life trials which is, frankly, very different for gay male cinema.” GC asks Mr. Demers: And how, exactly does Calgary, Alberta – Canada’s gay film festival –manage to get a North American premiere of a beautifully produced Australian feature film? “Luck, nepotism, and persistence!” James exclaims with much laughter. It’s played England, Germany, Switzerland, Spain and, of course, Australia. So, inevitably, it’s entry portal to North America is Calgary! Perhaps, like the Fairy Tales Film Festival itself, which is 18 this year, Calgary may be ‘coming of age’.

For example, unless Teddy gets a compliment every day, he gets a little tense and a little upset – so Morgan is always sure to pay him one. No, no, we’re just kidding. If there is one thing the team exudes, if you ever meet them, it is a relaxed, likeable air. Their chemistry together is as palpable onscreen as it is in person. If you have ever watched InnerSPACE, you know that they don’t always agree, which is the fun part. “We’re three very different people,” Teddy says. “We never have to fake our disagreements.” “We get really excited if we’re doing a read-through before we shoot the shows,” Morgan explains. “Like Oh, you disagree about this? Ok, great!” There is always something new brewing at the SPACE channel. This year it’s Outcasts and, of course, Orphan Black and Killjoys. Spotlight On Sweet Carousel and Laced Up Cabaret By Lisa Lunney Friday, May 13th was anything but unlucky for attendees of Sweet Carousel’s Laced Up Cabaret. It was an evening of exquisite fashion and mind-blowing burlesque performances. The acts of the evening were phenomenal. Special guests included Kira Von Sutra, Raven Virginia, Amber Ray and Dangrrr Doll. Local talent was present and ensured Edmonton was represented at its finest: the fabulous boylesque sensation Beau Creep, Cherry Monroe, Holly Von Sin and more! Elise Scarytale is the woman behind all the action, proud owner of Sweet Carousel Corsetry, an Edmonton based brand that has blown up and now attracts international clients and big-name stars in the burlesque and modeling world. Elise is an active member in both the local and international burlesque community; she strives to make this unique art more mainstream. Elise lives and breathes for all things cabaret and fashion. Growing up, Elise was surrounded by fashion. Her mother is also quite talented when it comes to mode so, it’s safe to say, one of the main inspirations behind starting the brand was encouragement from family. Fashion has always been in her blood, and it only seemed right for her to then put her blood, sweat and tears into something she is so passionate about. Prior to the show Elise chatted with GayCalgary about her line and the world of burlesque. GC: Thanks for chatting with us! Your designs are absolutely incredible. Where do you find inspiration for your designs? ES: I actually find a lot of inspiration with fabrics themselves. I explore international garment districts, local shops and online, and when a fabric catches my eyes, I naturally come up with designs. I also find inspiration from my clients: they present me with their favourite colours and embellishments they want, and I am able to design around their personality and come up with a corset that represents them. I am also very active in the burlesque community, so I usually find inspiration from the historic burlesque and showgirl costuming. GC: What are some of the most unique/fun designs you have done? ES: I once made a design made out of a box of old lace that a bride of mine has collected over the years, and that were stored in her grandma’s closet. I was able to incorporate the materials together and make a unique, boho-style wedding dress for her. I have also collaborated with local graffiti artists and made a collection of hand-painted street art corsets. That was super cool, ’cause I got to work with fabrics and ideas that were very different than my own. GC: What is the most exciting event you have participated in? ES: Doing a pool-side fashion show in Las Vegas during the Burlesque Hall of Fame was exciting: I got to show my work to the most well-known burlesque performers in the world. GC: What makes your brand so unique and fashion-forward? ES: I try to break away from the corset designer stereotype of renaissance and gothic wear. I have an extensive knowledge of the revolution of fashion – fetish and feminism – which is something that I put into all my designs, but listen to the clients to come up with something unique to them. My clients range from dominatrix to small-town mothers. www.gaycalgary.com

GC: Can you tell readers about Laced Up? ES: Laced Up Cabaret is a bi-yearly show I put on that celebrates corsetry and burlesque. I wanted to bring something unique and extravagant to Edmonton, inspired by international club kid and festival events I attend with content I create. The show features international and local burlesque performers and an exciting Sweet Carousel fashion show, with a notably diverse cast of women, men and drag queens in all shapes and sizes modeling my work. Smoothing Out Behind the Scenes

By V.N. Winnick ’Tis the season once again; Edmonton Pride is less than a month away. Angela Bennett, executive director of the Edmonton Pride Festival, took the time to speak with us about the challenges and intricacies of marshalling such a massive and occasionally (from an organizational perspective) unwieldy event. Her comments give some excellent background into what it takes to ensure Pride is representative, significant and – above all – fun and fulfilling for its participants. Bennett, now in her sixth year as executive director, speaks with an indefatigable enthusiasm as she describes just what is involved in putting on this kind of show. Gay Calgary: For someone who has been in attendance at previous Edmonton Pride festivals, what might they notice in 2016 that is new or different? Angela Bennett: We’re going to be at the same location on Whyte Avenue. As to what we have implemented new this year – from an outsider’s view you might not notice – but as one of the participants, specifically in the parade, we have made quite a few changes with respect to how the parade is going to be staged, as well the expectations of the parade entrants. There’s a mandatory volunteering aspect to being part of the parade now; there is also team lead orientation... We have far more space for staging, and [we have] implemented a lot of tighter guidelines and tighter rules around the parade itself, 16

just because it is getting so big; it’s becoming hard to manage without implementing those things. Last year... we were in a new location, we had some late entries, we had not enough space to stage the parade. The general onlooker might not notice, but behind the scenes there were some struggles and challenges that we had faced. GC: We understand that you have also been taking some steps to ensure that attending the parade is a safe and fun experience. AB: As wonderful as it is to have lots of people come and watch, it’s also a challenge on the other end to make sure we can properly manage the people along the parade route – to ensure the safety of the spectators – so that is why this year we have asked specifically for each parade entrant to provide us with one volunteer, because the other side of that coin is that we pay approximately $122 per hour for each EPS officer along that parade route. [So if we] want to see 25 or 27 police officers on the parade route, times three hours... So it is looking for some help from the community and the organizations that are a part of it, and want to support it... Because of the change there is some hesitation, and some organizations who are not as in favour of the mandatory volunteering aspect of it, but there needs to be greater understanding of the challenges that we’re facing. We understand that it isn’t convenient for every single group but, on the other side, it is hard for us to keep the parade fees very low – keep the event accessible – so that we are

still trying to represent the LGBT community properly; so we’re trying to balance all those things. GC: Any changes in 2016 on the volunteering front? AB: We are really looking at beefing up our volunteer program overall. Everything from better training and better understanding of what the expectations are for volunteers, to a greater appreciation and [finding ways to] work with our sponsors to find ways to say thank you that are cost-effective – let’s say. GC: There are those who don’t feel that, let’s say, ‘mainstream’ Pride events represent them well, or at all. For instance, in Calgary, we have the Calgary Dyke and Trans March alongside the main Pride events, to ensure the visibility of trans people and queer women. How have you worked with similar groups in Edmonton? AB: We do try our best to make sure that we are as inclusive of everybody, and that we are representing all groups fairly. I know that some still feel that the festival, and parade specifically, is too commercialized. The argument that I have is that, unfortunately, the reality of it is that that’s where the money comes from. Fifty-four percent of our funding comes from sponsors. It’s a tightrope, basically, trying to be representative, but trying to find ways to have an event of this magnitude still happen. Last year we had partnered with the Pride Centre, to do the Women & Trans Festival and March, and we had partnered with them right from the beginning. The issues were discussed that this is maybe an underrepresented group as part of this festival. We said, we get that; that’s perfect. Let’s help elevate that, and what can we do. So from the festival perspective we provided the infrastructure – we provided the stage, we provided the techs for the stage, the tents, beer gardens area, portapotties – all those kinds of things. We had extended our rentals on those, we had provided security, and had the women and trans mini-festival, and it seemed to go well. This year... they are partnering with a different group. (The 2016 Queer Women & Trans Festival and March will be held on Saturday, June 11th at noon.) Because we do recognize that... in the past there has been an underrepresentation of the trans community, so we are very excited this year: we have two trans people on our board. So we’re... able to include different things, even right down to our volunteer orientation... so that we’re educating our volunteers as well as the general public [about things] that are less obvious, or that people are less familiar with. GC: Have you found a bit more traction in your dealings with the government, in terms of getting your gaming license from AGLC that I understand has been stymied for several years now, with the current provincial government? www.gaycalgary.com

AB: Yes, absolutely. GC: What are you, as an organizer, most excited about? AB: For the most part, it’s about streamlining and perfecting the new location. Oh, and we have a kickoff party – that is very exciting! We’ve put the awards night, and the Rainbow Gallery... on the Friday night and then there will be a kickoff party afterward, with a DJ and dance to follow. And the Raddisson is offering a sweet deal for all those Calgary folks out there – $109 a night!

Discussing Community Safety Landlords and Tenants

By Constable Andy Buck Hello again everyone, and a happy Summer to you all….wait, it’s only Spring? The weather has been incredible lately that it feels much more like August than May. I hope that you are able to get out and enjoy the warm sunshine, unless of course you are a winter sports enthusiast! I have recently returned from a beach holiday, feeling refreshed and ready to go for the upcoming summer season, and I hope to catch up with you out at some community events over the coming months. I have been speaking to a couple of community members recently about situations that have arisen regarding their rights as tenants. A lot of you will be renting your accommodations, and I know there are some of you that are involved on the other side as landlords of premises, so I wanted to take the opportunity to make you aware of some of the contents of the Residential Tenancies Act. It was a good refresher for me to read it, and I saw some things that I had completely forgotten about. It is always a good idea to know what your rights are as well as your responsibilities, either as a tenant or as a landlord. For example, as a landlord it is your responsibility to provide a copy of the tenancy agreement to the tenant within 21 days, and the tenant can withhold rent until a copy is received. Also, you are not to disturb a tenant’s peaceful enjoyment of the premises other than for what is necessary to fulfil your obligations as a landlord. One thing that you may find interesting is that landlords are required to deposit security deposits into an interest-bearing account within 2 banking days of it being paid, and to pay the tenant that interest at the end of each tenancy year, or at the end of the tenancy if both parties agree. As a tenant, how many of you have changed addresses and not received any interest on your security deposit? As a tenant, there are certain things that are expected of you. They may seem self-explanatory and obvious, but still some people fail to keep up with their responsibilities. These include being considerate to the landlord and other tenants, to not perform illegal acts or conduct illegal business on the premises, to keep the premises clean, to prevent damage to the premises, to move out when the tenancy agreement ends, and to obtain written permission from the landlord if you wish to sublet the premises. Another thing of note surrounds inspection reports. It is mandatory for both the landlord and tenant to complete both a move-in and move-out inspection report. The premises must be inspected by both the tenant and landlord together, within one week before or after a tenant moves in and within one week before or after they move out. Both parties must sign the reports, and the landlord must give the tenant a copy of the reports as soon as they are completed. Additionally, the landlord must keep copies of the inspection reports for 3 years after the termination of the tenancy. Regarding the security deposit, the tenant cannot forego that as a replacement for the last month’s rent, the last month’s rent must be paid. However, if there is rent due or owing at the end of the tenancy this can be deducted from the security deposit. Within 10 days of the tenant moving out, the landlord must either return the tenant’s security deposit in full plus interest, or provide an itemized

statement of account if all or part of the security deposit is used to cover costs. As you can see, the Residential Tenancies Act is more complex than you might have initially thought. Feel free to download it from the internet, or alternatively I can give advice where required. Please note that breaches of this Act are considered a civil matter rather than criminal and that police involvement is really just to keep the peace in situations where there are disputes. One of 2015’s biggest breakout stars, Tituss Burgess, discovered this fact last year, when the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt actor’s already-escalating showbiz profile reached new heights thanks to a song he sang called “Peeno Noir: An Ode to Black Penis.” So Burgess can retire now, right? “Oh no, I’m just getting started,” says Burgess, who originated “Sebastian the Crab” in the musical version of The Little Mermaid. “There are so many races to love on!” 20

Not to mention, there’s also the second – and hopefully third, fourth and eighth – season of Netflix’s Unbreakable. The 37-year-old plays Titus (a variation on his real name, with just one “s”), an aspiring and very gay Broadway performer who lives with an unworldly doomsday-cult survivor named Kimmy (Ellie Kemper). But back to that penis song… GC: What was it like seeing “Peeno Noir” take off the way it did? TB: I don’t know that I gave it as much thought or attention as attention was paid to it, and that’d be the honest truth. I mean, obviously I paid attention because I launched my own line of www.gaycalgary.com

Pinot Noir (called “Pinot by Tituss”), but it was lovely to know that people thought it was funny and had taken ownership of it, but it’s become something other than what it initially was. People recite those words and tell me that their office breaks out into it just as release – no one’s thinking about what it actually meant – so it’s taken on a life of its own separate from the show. But it’s awesome and I love it, and I hope they find something as equally exciting and satisfying about this season as they did last season. GC: We get to learn more about Titus’s “straight life” this season. Who were you during your straight life? TB: Gay! (Laughs) Honestly, I had a formal conversation with my mom when I was 19, but I don’t know that I was ever in the closet, if I’m being perfectly honest. I never had the “I have to tell the world” mindset. GC: How much of the character is you? TB: I’m gonna be honest with you: very little. We share a similar wicked sense of humor and we both, of course, love musical theater and Diana Ross, but my energy lives a lot lower to the ground than his does and I don’t yearn for the spotlight the way he does. The fact is, I really, really enjoy my alone time, so I don’t crave that the way my character does. In fact, by the time we’re done filming the season, I’m quite exhausted. He requires such a high level of vibration, and so by the time it’s done, I’m happy to hang him up for a few months. GC: Titus’s breakthrough moment this season involves him in geisha garb. I’m just waiting to hear what the critics have to say about that. TB: Oooh lord. When I read that script I thought, “Jesus. Last year it was the wolf (Jacqueline, who is “American Indian,” unleashed a primal howl during the finale); this year it’s gonna be the geisha.” GC: How prepared are you for any backlash? TB: Oh, I’m prepared. I’ve had six months to prep for the harsh criticism. The thing about (creators) Tina (Fey) and Robert (Carlock) is, they don’t shy away from the current climate of the country, and while on a surface level it might seem like they’re giving these silly stereotypes a platform, I think it’s just sort of exacerbating what we have become so sensitive to. But if it’s a headline, my friend, it is fair game. Tina and Robert are two of the most informed people I’ve ever met, and sometimes we get scripts and I think, “Surely this has not happened somewhere,” or, “Surely this is something that they’ve made up.” So I’ll get on the Internet and there it is. The transracial storyline – people feeling as though as they remember past lives – when I read these headlines, it’s funny because it’s so unbelievable. So yeah, it’s a fine line, but they

treat it with great sensitivity and great class – and it is, after all, a comedy. GC: Are there ever times where you’re like, “Tina, no, no – too far.” TB: Yeah – the geisha episode! I didn’t wanna do it. GC: What were you hesitant about? TB: I’m in white face, man! I didn’t want anyone to think I was disrespecting a culture. But what we did was make certain that, while it’s funny, he’s extremely sincere about what has happened to him. He’s for real, and as long as he’s for real in his interpretation and his acknowledgement of his past lives then it’s not offensive. There’s something oddly touching about the end of that episode, and I think it also serves a greater storyline, which is, Titus has finally taken the initiative to take control of his career. No one else is giving him a job, so he wrote one for himself, so that is what’s smart about it. GC: What do you think when people call Titus a stereotype? TB: I think they didn’t see the same show that I filmed. Titus is more everyman than Jacqueline, Kimmy or Lillian. He’s broke, he can’t afford to pay his rent, he’s chasing this career that has not materialized, he has trouble in relationships, at least last season, and he is not a size 32 in the waist. He gets rejected when he attempts to do something good with his life, even if it’s one of his bizarre “this is gonna make me famous” excursions. Most Americans are living lives unfulfilled. Most Americans don’t have the money that Jacqueline has. Most Americans, especially black people, don’t get away with committing murder like Lillian did. So they’re not paying attention, that’s what I think. GC: Your performance of Diana Ross’s “Believe in Yourself” while accepting the Human Rights Campaign’s Visibility Award late last year was so moving. Why is being out and visible important to you? TB: Honey, how much time do you have? (Laughs) I know what dark places feel like and I know what the absence of love and community feels like, and if I had a me when I was growing up to see, I would have perhaps been familiar to you guys a lot sooner than two years ago. For that reason, I don’t want any young person or any old person to not acknowledge who they came into the world being through all of their past lives. This current one that you’re experiencing is one that should be fully realized, otherwise you are the walking dead, and what is the point?

by Krista Sylvester If you’re planning on binge watching season 4 of Orange is the New Black on June 17th then be prepared for Lea DeLaria to bitch slap you. In fact, those were her words. DeLaria, who plays OITNB fan favourite inmate ‘Big Boo’, fully expects audiences to indulge in their guilty pleasure in one sitting – just don’t tweet at her after for more episodes. “I know they will; there’s nothing I can do about it. It’s crazy: I walk down the street in my neighbourhood, and every window I pass, I see me on the TV. Every window. It’s nutty,” she tells Gay Calgary during a break at the recent Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo. “And you guys, really, show some restraint. You know, ’cause you guys watch it – you watch it, you watch it – you’re done with it in two minutes, then you’re tweeting at me, when’s the next season coming out, and honest to God I will bitch slap the first person that says that to me. You gotta wait a year for every television show; it’s just that ours come all out at once.” Not that DeLaria can blame viewers – the original Netflix series took audiences and critics by storm when it first aired on July 11th, 2013, and has been averaging millions of viewers ever since. As a testament to its popularity, the female prison dramedy was just renewed through to its seventh season. “So when Orange hits airwaves on June 17th, basically what happens is 80 million people around the world are all sitting in front of whatever their devices are, at the same time, watching the show,” DeLaria says. 22

DeLaria says ‘nobody’ could have imagined how big the show, which is based on the book by the same name written by Jenji Kohan about her prison experiences, would become. “I mean, there was no way that we could think that anything like this was going to happen. And it’s new; Netflix was new so we didn’t realize how their business plan and business model was going to basically change the way everyone watches television. It’s a complete game changer.” DeLaria, who is also a comedian and self-professed Star Wars/Lord of the Rings/William Shatner fan, was recently in Calgary as a guest of the Calgary Comic Expo, and says there is no difference between Canadian fans or American fans – or anywhere in the world fans for that matter. “It’s very popular everywhere it has shown; it’s like the number one television show in every country that it has shown in… but people in Canada love the show. They scream when I get off an airplane in an airport; they come up to me; they want their picture taken – I mean that is, to me, the beauty of it; we actually make Canadians say things out loud in public. Amazing.” So with just days to go until the latest season is released, DeLaria reminds you that much like Regina Spektor’s opening credits song says, “You’ve Got Time.”

Gossip and scandals that arise from both, a subject most actors know plenty about. Viola Davis takes Custody to Tribeca Writer-director James Lapine is a man with three Tony Awards, one of them for Best Book of a Musical for Into The Woods. But he hasn’t directed a theatrically released feature film since 1993’s Michael J. Fox vehicle, Life with Mikey. No matter, he stays busy, most recently as a co-director of the HBO documentary Six by Sondheim. And now his next film, Custody, will take a bow at the Tribeca Film Festival. Starring Viola Davis as a family court judge, the cast includes Hayden Panettiere, Ellen Burstyn, and Catalina Sandino Moreno as women whose lives intersect in the context of various custody battles. There are some men here, too, like Raul Esparza, Tony Shalhoub and Dan Fogler, as well as a bit of currently unspecified queer content, but you’ll have to watch the movie to learn about all that. It should open sometime later this year. Coming soon: Check It, the LGBT gang documentary The idea of “bashing back” is often more of a wish than a reality, especially when individual queer people find themselves outnumbered, experiencing violence at the hands of more than one non-LGBT abuser. But in Washington, D.C., a group of young friends between the ages of 14 and 22 decided that enough was enough. They formed Check It, which may be the first organized LGBT gang, a crew of young queer people of color who keep each other safe. They aren’t afraid of fighting back against their attackers with the same aggression they’ve been victims of themselves; nor are they afraid of the camera, cooperating with documentary filmmakers Dana Flor and Toby Oppenheimer (The Nine Lives of Marion Berry) for their project also known as Check It. The movie, which premieres soon at the Tribeca Film Festival, explores the family dynamic of the gang and follows them as they build their own fashion business in the hopes of moving up and out of poverty and violence. We assume the title of the new movie, The Pass, refers to several of that word’s definitions. In the British production, Looking star Russell Tovey plays a professional footballer (“soccer player” to you) struggling to come out of the closet and failing. So basically, he’s passing balls on the field, making passes at guys off the field and, since his character is afraid to deal with his own sexuality and would prefer not to be known as gay, he’s also passing for heterosexual. The debut feature from filmmaker Ben A. Williams – one that knows its target audience very well and does not neglect to put the actors in their underwear, so thanks, movie – The Pass also stars EastEnders regular Arinze Kene. It’s already available to be seen across the Atlantic, which means we’ll get it over here, eventually. Romeo San Vicente bends it like (Victoria) Beckham.

Christopher Logan Presents Burlesque Canadian

By Lisa Lunney Canadian Burlesque enthusiast Christopher Logan recently compiled an absolutely stunning collection of photos and history about this unique form of dance; the finished product rivals all other burlesque books for #1 ranking. Logan has a keen eye for detail, and his second book, Burlesque, showcases this. Logan chatted with GayCalgary about the process and inspiration behind this gorgeous book. GC: Thanks for taking the time to chat about Burlesque! How does it feel to finally have the book in print? What pieces are you most proud of? CL: The reaction and respect the performers and photographers feel from this book. I feel everyone is getting more out of the project than they put in, and really feel seen and respected for their work and artistry. GC: What images really stand out and speak to you? CL: The cover by Karl Giant of performance artist Meow Meow is my favourite. It strikes a chord and sets the tone for the whole book. I also am partial to a lot of the performance shots by the female photographers Toni Wallachy, Olena Sullivan and Stephanie Saujon. They brought the feeling of a live show to the pages of the book and captured these performers at the top of their game. GC: What message do you hope Burlesque delivers? CL: I hope it’s an introduction for a lot of people into how beautiful and stunning the world of Burlesque can be. Like with my first book, dr.a.g., I believe we’re opening up a new audience to an old art. GC: What sparked the idea?

CL: The books are to help raise awareness and a platform to produce films, while celebrating diversity within the arts. It started as a way to raise funding and bloomed into a fullfledged book company along the way. GC: How different was creating Burlesque in comparison to dr.a.g.? CL: It took a lot longer with the first book than the second… and now I have a ‘method to my madness’. I know how to approach people: what to ask for; how to facilitate; etc. These books are a huge operation: an orchestration of so many people, artists, photographers and time. And it all comes together under the watchful and knowing eye of my graphic designer, Mamio Marais. The future books will take a shorter period to pull together, but they will continue to open up new audiences to wonderful artists I admire. This full-colour coffee table book is now available for purchase. It is the perfect addition to any Burly fans’ home, or simply those who have a zest for the finer things in life.

By Mars Tonic There are a lot of new shows for sci-fi lovers to sink their teeth into these days, but when it comes to watching characters getting up to no good in space, the current winner has got to be Killjoys. Produced by the same creative mind that was behind Lost Girl – which broke dozens of conventions, lauded female sexuality, and was entertaining as hell – Killjoys goes all the way. The show features brilliant characterization and a premise fraught with political tension, all set in outer space. Of the team of three bounty hunters the show centers around, who fight to remain neutral in a confusing world, we were able to stop and speak with two of them: Luke Macfarlane and Aaron Ashmore, both talented actors and undeniable eye candy. We were able to figure out some very important things – like, for instance, if they were the trio in Harry Potter, Hannah JohnKamen (who plays the third in their company) would be Harry, with Aaron and Luke playing Hermione and Ron, respectively. While there was some argument about who was Hermione, the position of Harry was a no-brainer. GC: She [Hannah] seems kind of like the ringleader. LM: She is a leader, just like she is on the show. GC: You’re both from very strong TV backgrounds like Smallville and Brothers and Sisters. As Killjoys continues to burgeon, what is it like starring in a show that is starting out small, but is starting to build up a huge fan following? AA: Even though Smallville was very comic-book driven, in Killjoys we’re creating a whole world here: rules that we don’t necessarily understand; governments and all these sorts of things – so it’s a huge creative process… that … was really, really fun to jump into. www.gaycalgary.com

LM: Especially at a time right now where I feel there’s this sort of resurgence for passion over harder sci-fi – more authentic, space opera sci-fi. GC: The creator of the show, Michelle Lovretta, was also behind Lost Girl, which had really strong women and overt sexuality, without any guilt behind it. What was it like knowing you were walking onto that kind of set? AA: It’s pretty exciting. It’s so fun to hear Michelle talk and the way she thinks about things, and female characters, and just this world. I just want to sit there and listen to her talk. When you know someone like that is leading you, it’s really cool. LM: Michelle’s also fundamentally changed my experience in watching TV. What I have learned from these ideas, like when you see the woman is always looking to the man for approval, it changes the way I watch TV. That’s one of the exciting things about the world of Killjoys, the way sexuality is explored. GC: Aaron, how is the dynamic and the chemistry between you and Luke as you play brothers? AA: It’s interesting: you sort of have to build that rapport up, but I liked Luke instantaneously. When we met very briefly in the audition room, I was like Oh, he’s getting that part for sure. I think he gave me, like, a headlock in the audition – and I was like: oh yeah, that reminds me of Sean [my brother] and I fighting.

By Mars Tonic Sam Maggs is just like any other nerd you might run into at a comic book store or a movie theatre – she just happens to get paid for it. Author of Fangirl’s Guide to the Galaxy, she is also a newly minted employee of Bioware (if you don’t know Bioware, then you should probably look it up – at least if you enjoy video games with mindblowing graphics and stories, not to mention a hearty dose of cultural, racial and sexual representation). Additionally, Maggs is a popular contributor to The Mary Sue, an online news source for all things feminist and nerdy. Does Maggs get asked for advice on how she managed to become a writer? Absolutely. “I was thinking about this the other day, because people ask me for advice all the time when I really still feel like I’m struggling to figure it out, and what’s next, and what I’m doing with my life. So I always feel kind of weird giving advice. “But people always really want to know how to become a writer; that’s what I get asked a lot. My advice is always the same, which is the only difference between someone who wants to be a writer and a writer is just… writing. You can feel like there are a lot of hardships and things that make that difficult,

but you’ve just got to do it. The cool thing about social media and Tumblr and blogs is that there are really no barriers to entry anymore. If you want to make a comic, you can make a comic. Put it on the Internet and your audience is right there. If you want to write for a blog, people are always looking for contributors. There’s a hungry audience for this stuff. You can just do it and put yourself out there – and it is really scary, and you will be terrible at it at first – but you just have to be like, that’s ok. Tomorrow will be easier; the day after that will be easier.” It’s said that one of the major differences between people who succeed and people who don’t is that successful people have failed more, and Maggs can back that up wholeheartedly. “The number of projects that I have pitched that have gone nowhere is countless. You just have to keep throwing spaghetti at the wall until something sticks, so to speak.” When she’s not occupied with her own projects, Maggs has her head down at Bioware, working as an assistant writer. “It’s exciting, because now I get to make my own video game boyfriends and girlfriends,” she noted with glee. “Which is awesome. It’s the dream – really.” Did they throw her a party when she got hired? We have heard stories about legendary bashes. “Oh, God no!” she laughed. “Oh my God. I just walked in and I was like, Don’t get fired today. And that’s what I tell myself every day. So far so good.”

You better believe Jane Lynch can sing, and even if you don’t, “I think by the time you buy the ticket and come to the show, you hope I can sing! You’ve got your fingers crossed!” the Glee alum says of her touring act See Jane Sing, cracking her signature booming laugh. Lynch is best known as iconic cheer coach Sue Sylvester, who tormented McKinley High for six seasons of Fox’s musical-dramedy behemoth Glee, which brimmed with all sorts of songs – just not many sung by Lynch herself. There was, of course, the playful homage to Madonna, when Lynch donned black lace for a frame-

Now, Lynch is making up for lost time as she headlines See Jane Sing, the entertainer’s touring cabaret that merges comedy with music and also features Kate Flannery of The Office and Tim Davis, the music director of Glee. After resolving a shoddy phone connection (“Where are you? Iraq covering the war?”), Lynch spoke at length about how her cabaret is not a “live sex show” like Liza’s, the one man she’d go straight for (and the one woman she’d stay gay for), and what’s so funny about three white people performing Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda.”

GC: Do you read reviews? JL: Ummm, good question! I have for this show, yes. The reason being is because I’m confident (laughs). I don’t think anybody could say anything about it, me or anybody in it that would actually stick. I don’t think they could say anything bad because I’m very confident in it; it’s such a blast that it stands alone as an experience for me without having anybody telling me it’s good or bad. GC: The reason I ask is because I read a New York Times review from 2014. JL: It was awesome, wasn’t it? GC: It was! They noted the show’s “sexual subtext.” I haven’t seen the show yet, but I’m curious about this “sexual subtext.” JL: Yeah, I am too! I’m curious about it too! (Laughs) I think what they might have been talking about is: Cheyenne Jackson, a wonderfully talented man who also happens to be gay, did “Something Stupid” that night with me. It was a special thing and he came up and we sang the song “Something Stupid,” and he talked about this weird kind of sexual tension between the two of us, because I think he’s so attractive and so handsome and I get very confused about my sexuality when I’m in the presence of Cheyenne Jackson. GC: When I’m watching Cheyenne Jackson I know that I am 100 percent homosexual, no question about it. JL: Isn’t that wonderful? I feel that way about Susan Sarandon, though she probably wouldn’t, you know, receive my affection… well, she’d receive it, but she might not return it. GC: What was your introduction to cabaret? JL: Well, let’s see, I’ve been in theater for a long time. I go see people perform, whether it’s at a hole in the wall or it’s a chick with a guitar. I usually don’t like big rock concerts – I don’t seek those out – so the combination of doing a comedy show with music has always been something I loved. I used to do sketch comedy a lot before I started doing television and film, and we always found a way to put a song in there. I did a “one person” show and I put the quotes there because there were three other people in there; it was all my material, but I had other people in it and we had six or seven songs in it and I love that. I don’t play a character so much, but Kate is my inappropriate drunken sidekick and we have a particular thing that I think is very entertaining and a lot of fun. She’s the glue of the evening for me and I’m so lucky to have her. GC: So your introduction to cabaret was not Liza’s Cabaret? JL: Oh, that – well, that’s a whole different thing. That was almost like a live sex show in Nazi Germany! It’s funny, I think we call (this show) a cabaret and it’s kind of stuck with the show because we did it at 54 Below (in New York). It’s where one

person stands there with their band and people come to eat and listen, so when I say cabaret, it’s a live performance comedy concert. (Laughs) GC: Were you a funny kid? JL: Yeah, I was a funny kid and that was one thing I always knew I had. You know how you’re insecure as a kid? I was like, “Well, I know I’m funny.” GC: So you used that to your advantage? JL: Yeah, I guess so. You know, sometimes I felt like I was just trying to survive, as I think a lot of kids feel, having the big gay secret and all that stuff. I feel like when you’re a kid – for a lot of kids anyway – it’s about trying to survive and stay under the radar of humiliation so people don’t sniff you out. GC: Did humor help you survive, then, as a kid? JL: Oh yeah, absolutely. GC: How did you know you were funny and when did you realize you could make a living being funny? JL: I never set out to do that. I love mining things for the comedy and, of course, that attracts people who love doing that as well. I had this one hilarious friend in high school, Christopher, who’s still a friend, and we did nothing but laugh together. The silliness of the social hierarchies – we would watch those and we laughed about those. We laughed about everything; nothing was too sacred. And we were Catholic kids too! We laughed about the priests and the congregation. So, if you’re allowing your passion to lead you, you end up making money at it, which is a great thing! (Laughs) But I didn’t set out to do it. I really just set out to laugh. GC: For a while there, you were performing in church basements. JL: Yeah – a lot of them! The churches would rent out their basement just to make some money and they didn’t care what kind of show you were doing. They didn’t show up; you just paid the 50 bucks and you set up the lights and that’s what ya did. GC: Is it true that, when you ended up at Second City, you were one of only two women picked to join the troupe? JL: Well, that wasn’t unique. There were only two women in every company. Now, it’s three. So it wasn’t a unique thing. Every company had two women and four guys and now it’s three and three. It wasn’t like I was only one of two women in the entire history of Second City. I know in some press release it says that, or something online says “she was chosen,” but no, it’s not a big deal. All the girls were one of two women. Now they’re one of three women. GC: Did it feel unfair to you that the men and women weren’t equal in number? www.gaycalgary.com

JL: Nah, I didn’t have eyes for that stuff. I really didn’t. I didn’t see that stuff. I wasn’t available to feeling less than in that way. It just didn’t happen for me. GC: Assuming you’re taking a bus on tour, what kind of music do you listen to on the road? JL: Oh no, we’re not on a bus, man. Dude, we are flying. We do this first class – that’s why I’m not making any money on this tour! We fly. I said, “I’m not gonna do it if I have to sit in a bus,” so we fly and we all fly together, although Kate and I do fly first class and I make a joke about it in the show – another reason why I’m not making any money on this tour. But we all fly together and we hang out. We all eat together, laugh together, so I’m not listening to music or anything. I’m not a listener to music – I don’t listen to it very much. But Kate does, and Kate and I have very much the same taste. So, when we’re getting ready – we have a dressing room together – she plays Burt Bacharach songs. She has a terrific library of Burt Bacharach songs, not just by Burt Bacharach, but by all sorts of groups like The Carpenters and we sing at the top of our lungs and that’s our little pre-show warmup. GC: How did Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” end up on the setlist? JL: I had a burst of inspiration! I thought, “Wouldn’t it be funny if we did this?” First of all, I think it’s one of the most amazing, hilarious and artful videos I have ever seen. It is so funny. She is sooo self-deprecating, and she’s so kind of pinned this character – this rich girl who’s from the hood who has no class who all of a sudden is hanging out with drug dealers and having access to Balmain and nice clothes and a nice car. She just nails it. So, I thought, “Wouldn’t it be fucking hilarious if me, Kate and Tim” – I mean we look like the Heritage Singers out there! We’re so white, so immaculately white, and all three of us cannot dance at all but have all the confidence in the world in our moves. GC: Looking back on Glee: The show changed a lot of queer kids’ lives, and if I had been younger, it really would’ve influenced me in a major way. JL: Right; me too! GC: If a show like Glee had been on when you were a young gay person, how might your life have been different? JL: Ahh, it would’ve showed me that I wasn’t alone, and oh, just to know that you’re not alone. I really thought I had a mental disease that I was never gonna be able to get over, that I was cursed with it, that it was my fault. GC: Catholic guilt? JL: Yes, yeah! And I don’t know where I got this, because my parents weren’t Catholic in that way. We went to church but they weren’t like, “This is bad; this is good.” They just weren’t that way. They were very relaxed, not very good Catholics except that they went to church every Sunday. In saying that they weren’t very good Catholics – they were really good people! (Laughs) GC: I get it. They weren’t devout.

JL: Exactly. So, I don’t know where I got that it was so horrible, maybe just by the fact that it was whispered about, if it was spoken about at all. And I didn’t see one person in my trajectory of life that had it! (Laughs) I was completely alone in it, so for me to have a Glee, and I’m sure I speak perhaps for you and a lot of other gay people growing up in the ’70s and the ’80s, a Glee would’ve been so wonderful – oh, how great that would’ve been. GC: Did you feel that, when Glee ended in 2015, it was time? JL: Yeah, sure. Absolutely. You know, these things can’t go on forever. We have this thing in American television that you have to be on for 10 years or something, and I think the British have it right. The British do 13 episodes and then take a holiday. GC: Does the cast keep in touch? Are you and Matthew Morrison still close? JL: I do talk to Matthew, yeah. And my niece was assistant to one of our executive producers and she’s friends with all those folks, so I see them and they come over to my house and we make dinner and sit out on the porch. GC: I was gonna say, “What’s a post-Glee party at Jane’s house like?” JL: (Laughs) Well, they don’t talk about Glee, that’s for sure! They’ve all kind of moved on, but they’re very good friends. It was a bonding experience for them – for all of them. GC: You have Mascots coming up for Netflix, and it’s directed by Christopher Guest, who also did Best in Show with you. What was it like teaming with Jennifer Coolidge again after playing her butch lesbian personal dog handler in Best in Show? JL: Well, I didn’t work with her; I haven’t even seen her. I worked with Ed Begley Jr., Mike Hitchcock and Parker Posey, so I didn’t even get to see her. I can’t wait to see her at the premiere. GC: What do you remember from working with Jennifer on Best in Show? JL: It was a first-time experience for both of us, and we were both very nervous. We were shooting it in Vancouver and we got very close. The days we weren’t working we would take walks through Stanley Park, and she is one of those people who can make me laugh so hard that I can’t catch my breath. She renders my mind inert. I can’t do anything but hold whatever spot I’m at and just double over and try to catch my breath. GC: Has there ever been a role you regretted not taking? JL: I can’t even think of one. I’m so in the moment, man. I don’t think about that stuff. I can’t even remember turning something down and I can’t even remember – I don’t remember most things. (Laughs)

Good Times with Nick Jonas Pop’s dreamboat on standing up for LGBT rights, his ‘very welcoming’ gay club experience and his man bod

By Chris Azzopardi They dress up as the pop star, emulating his rousing onstage persona and donning denim that looks practically painted on. Yes, if we needed further proof about why the 23-year-old former Jonas Brothers is a celebrated beacon in the LGBT community, for his abs and for his advocacy – for standing up against the North Carolina “bathroom bill” by canceling two upcoming gigs there – look to the drag kings. Those kings are sure to find even more fodder for their glitzy acts on Last Year Was Complicated, Jonas’ second solo album. In our new interview, Jonas talked candidly about last year – his year of “growth.” And although he was congested – yes, even the perfection that is Nick Jonas deals with allergies that are “terri-ble” this time of year – he was more than happy to dish on LGBT rights, the night he and brother Joe ended up at a West Hollywood gay bar, and touching his… face. GC: I’ve never asked a guy this question – I’m always asking female artists who are being imper-sonated by men – but there are Nick Jonas drag kings, so we must talk about this. NJ: (Laughs) GC: I know, right? What’s it like to know that lesbians are dressing up in Nick Jonas drag? Also, what tips do you have for a Nick drag king who wants to perfect their Nick Jonas drag act? NJ: Well, it’s an honor, you know, first of all. I feel very honored! (Laughs) I think the tips would be, make sure the jeans are fairly tight – not too tight, but tight enough. And I do

a lot of face touching, I’ve noticed, so maybe incorporate that into the act and it’ll all work. GC: When do you touch your face the most? NJ: When I’m singing, when I’m talking. It’s kind of a strange thing I do. GC: I spoke to your brother Joe recently and he mentioned getting down at the gay clubs with you. What’s a night with you and Joe like at the gay club? NJ: It was very fun! We were out at The Abbey in LA. GC: Good place, good drinks. NJ: Good drinks! And it was just a good environment overall. People were very welcoming and we had a good time and we hung out and had a couple of drinks. And they played our music too, which is always nice when you’re at a club. The DJ was being friendly. (Laughs) GC: Was this a promo obligation? NJ: No, it’s just where we ended up. It wasn’t promo at all. GC: Who gets hit on more: you or Joe? NJ: We were kind of isolated, in our own sections off to the side, so we weren’t able to interact that much, but I’m not sure. He was also with his girlfriend at the time, so maybe he was getting less attention. GC: What would you say to straight guys who might not feel as comfortable going to a gay club as you are? NJ: In the same way I feel like there’s no difference with my fans, gay or straight, the same thing applies to the club. And you can have a good time anywhere you go if you just choose

to have a good time. I think it’s a unique environment to be in – and it’s a fun place and they play great music, (laughs) and as long as you’re willing to go in and have fun, I think it’s all good. GC: Some straight guys worry they might be the object of some man’s affection. NJ: Insecurity drives a lot of really poor decision-making. I think as long as you can be confident and comfortable in your own skin and who you are then you don’t really have to be worried about that. GC: When did you become comfortable in your own skin?

NJ: It’s a continual thing, continual growth. Just like everybody else, there are some days when I don’t feel great in my skin. I do my best to grow. But I think when I came into my body, you know, and started building muscle and realizing that in a lot of ways physically I had become a man, that’s when I became comfortable and confident. Getting into fitness was helpful. GC: When did being accepting and loving to the LGBT community really become important to you? Was there a person or a moment that really drove you to become the advocate that you are? NJ: It was my early Broadway days and being kind of immersed in the community at an early age and really seeing that there was no difference. The key was accepting and loving people from all different walks of life. It was just a priority at an early age and also because my parents were really open and loving and laid it out for us that there was no difference. I think that was a healthy environment to be in at an early age. GC: What do you make of speculation that you are gay? NJ: I think people are gonna make their assumptions regardless, you know? And I’m a hetero-sexual male who’s playing two gay characters on TV shows and really doing my best to be the most accepting and loving person I can be because I think that’s the way we all should be. So, if people have opinions or thoughts on my sexuality, that’s on them. I know who I am and I’m comfortable with who I am. GC: You stepped in for Iggy Azalea last year and headlined Pittsburgh Pride when she canceled her headlining performance after LGBT groups pulled out in protest of her past homophobic tweets. What was it like playing your first Pride event?

NJ: It was a lot of fun! I think there was a real warmth because of the fact that I kind of jumped in last minute and covered, so I think people were really pumped about that. The show itself was great. It was a lot of LGBT community people and it was good. They were a great crowd. And I’ll tell you what, I think it was one of my favorite shows of last year. There’s something to be said about surprising people! GC: Last year seemed to be pretty darn good for you, but your new album, Last Year Was Complicated, begs to differ. What was the biggest hurdle you had to overcome last year? NJ: It was a real year of growth, going from being in a group with my brothers for years to travel-ing alone, being alone all the time – it was intense at first. Then, on top of that, the breakup I had last year was, well, complicated (laughs), it was tricky. It required me to really dig in deep and lay out all my thoughts and feelings in my music, which, for me, is the best outlet possible. GC: Beyoncé is obviously experiencing this with her new surprise album Lemonade, but I wonder, for you, how do you feel when you release a body of work and the public dissects it and relates it back to your personal life? NJ: I can’t comment for Beyoncé or speak for her, but as an artist I think it’s so important to lay your heart and feelings out in your music, and if you want to be an open book in that way, it’s a great outlet to be able to do it. For me, I’m just thrilled to have that outlet to pour my heart into because it’s a good way to process my feelings and emotions. GC: Do you keep the gay community in mind when you make music? NJ: I think you have to create and have it be authentically you and kind of worry about what people are going to think afterwards, or who might be listening. That’s what I’ve tried to do: tell the stories the best way I can first, (so they) are the most honest. If I have to go back and edit afterwards, I will, but for the most part what I write in that room that day is what ends up on the record. GC: Outside of Scream Queen and Kingdom, do you see more gay roles in your future? NJ: I think it’s about the material. If something comes up and has a great script and a great crea-tive team, I would definitely

do it. It’s all about the script though. That, for me, is the focus. GC: When I talked to Joe he said he was working on music with you. He also alluded to the pos-sibility of there being a Jonas Brothers reunion down the line, saying, “It could easily happen.” What’s the status on the new music? And how do you feel about a Jonas reunion? NJ: Well, he and I live together now. We just moved in together actually. So yeah, we have a music room in the house and we’re always writing, whether it’s for us, for (his band) DNCE, for my stuff, or just writing for other people. I’m definitely trying to always create. But I’m not sure about a Jonas Brothers reunion. I think that we’re all very happy doing our own thing. And our oldest brother, Kevin, is expecting another baby with his wife, so it’s exciting times for every-body. GC: When might we hear some of the music you’ve been making with Joe? NJ: It’s gotta be right first, so if we get something done and it ends up on a project, that’d be great. But I’m not sure about anything coming out very soon – it’s gonna be a little while. GC: Following in the footsteps of some defiant tour cancellations in North Carolina to protest the state’s “bathroom bill,” you and your tour-mate Demi Lovato also took a stand, nixing both of your dates in the state. Why did you decide to cancel your shows there instead of, say, going the route that Cyndi Lauper did, which was to keep the show but donate the proceeds to LGBT causes? NJ: It’s an incredibly tough situation overall and one that we thought really hard about. Speaking with Demi and the whole team, the thought was, we needed to do our best to take a strong stand, and although it’s difficult and it’s gonna be a disappointment to our fans who were look-ing forward to the shows, we feel that it’s the right thing to do. Sometimes you gotta go with your gut feeling and do your best to help a situation. Hopefully our fans understand and stand with us. We’re trying to do our humble part. A change would be good.

Tiara Misu in 2010 started as a party girl persona, but did not start performing until the summer of 2014 when Evolution Wonderlounge started doing their Sunday Revues which totally revitalized the Edmonton Drag scene and gave birth to whole new slew of bitches. Very quickly, she had started making an impact on Edmonton’s drag scene with winning Alberta’s Next Drag Superstar 2015, the Stiletto Award for Best Dressed, and Performer of the Year 2016. On winning Alberta’s Next Drag Superstar 2015, “I felt validated and extremely proud that I pushed myself creatively with all of the numbers that I came up with during the competition. For me, winning the crown meant that I have to prove myself as to why I deserved that title; such as constantly trying to push myself creatively with my performances and trying to come up with fresh and new concepts and shows. “ Tiara Misu was born in the Philippines, then moved to Canada about 10 years to pursue a Masters in Theatre Design. For work, she manages a restaurant which helps pay for the wigs and costumes, plus does photography and makeup on the side. “I have a photo series that is constantly in the works of transforming men into women and women into men. It’s a project that challenges gender norms and a way for some of my subjects to explore their feminine or masculine sides.”

Since her reign as Alberta’s Next Drag Superstar 2015 is now over, she can finally take a break from drag. Her creativity will be concentrated on doing glamour and portrait photography, but knows that it will end up being drag related as well since she can become her own subject. She lives by Ru Paul’s quote “When you become the image of your own imagination, it’s the most powerful thing you could ever do.” Drag gave her a connection to the gay community, and at the same time is able to showcase her creativity and inspire other people to be who they are and who they want to be.
