Gay Pride and the continuing fight for acceptance
A small selection of different pride flags within our community
by Steve Polyak June is a very busy month for Gay Prides worldwide. With some of it being a big party – drinking hard, sexy men, corporate sponsorships etc. – is Pride really being what it needs to be?
changed our flag. Racist comments were used. The flag was created was because a segment of the black and Hispanic community in that city was feeling that they were not being accepted by the rest
I remember attending my first Pride, a rally in front of city hall where speeches were made, and then we walked over to Bridgeland for a dance. This was back in the early ’90s. People were wearing bags over their heads, worried that their work or family might find out that they were gay. There were no corporate sponsors; attendance was roughly the same size of the Dyke and Trans March that happens now in Calgary. It sometimes seems like ‘acceptance’ only applies to your typical gay men and lesbian women. Within our own community, people still make transphobic, racist, body shaming and other disparaging comments – both in public and on social media. As the gay community fought so hard to become accepted, why can it be so hard for some individuals to accept all members of the LGBTQ+ family? For Lethbridge Pride, the city painted both a rainbow crosswalk as well as a transgender flag cross walk. A couple times, in the middle of the night, both crosswalks got defaced with skid marks and, one night, paint mixed with crap. Taber celebrated their first pride and had their rainbow flag set on fire. Our community and allies voiced our support. We did not want the haters to win. We are proud of the rainbow flag and the trans flag. But also in the month of June, a variation of the rainbow flag was launched in Philadelphia. The colours black and brown were added. Members of our community had a fit that someone had www.gaycalgary.com

of the community. The flag was designed to be more inclusive of the LGBTQIA community within Philadelphia, not the world at large. The original Pride flag was created as a symbol for the gay community in 1978: hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for magic/ art, indigo for serenity, and violet for spirit. Hot pink was removed because the fabric was unavailable, and indigo and turquoise were changed to be royal blue. The flag adapted. Additional flags have been created to represent the different pockets within our own community, or different places around the world: the LGBT/Gay Pride rainbow, agender, asexual, bisexual, Bear Brotherhood, genderfluid, genderqueer, intersex, lesbian, lipstick lesbian, non-binary, pansexual, polysexual, transgender, Israeli transgender and genderqueer, Gay pride flag of South Africa, twink and more. There are also Gay Pride flag variations for the country celebrating pride, like the maple leaf as part of the rainbow flag, or stars for the United States. Are some of us so closed-minded that as soon as an alternate flag comes out to represent a segment and/or locale of our community that we must attack them for it? Is the Gay Pride flag that sacred that we assume that it should cover everyone’s diverse needs? Or is the uproar reflective of a systemic racism? There have been several articles that have been written about gay bars in the United States that were trying to exclude people of colour from their bars. You see comments on dating sites and apps that say, “No Blacks, No Asians”. So maybe this flag creates

a conversation, on what might be happening to pockets of the community, especially in certain areas of the United States. At Lethbridge Pride, there was a ball that was dropped with an external party not arranging things properly for GayCalgary to do a travel article around Lethbridge Gay Pride. At the last minute a friend of mine – Deonie, who is part of Club Didi and manages Once Upon a Bride – made some quick arrangements for my transportation and accommodation. That weekend in Lethbridge opened my eyes. As a gay white male, I might have come across some of these issues 15 years ago, but to hear that the transgender community still faces them made clear the fight is not over. During the early years of running Men For Men BBS, I was working for a computer store on MacLeod Trail. Right before the Thanksgiving weekend, the general manager told me that I was going to be promoted to sales manager of the store and that the details of the promotion would be discussed after they got back from the long weekend. During that weekend, I was outed for being gay. The printers who printed the Men For Men trick cards decided to show up and drop them off at the store instead of letting me come pick them up. When the general manager came back, they pulled me into the office and said that I would not be getting promoted because they did not want someone who was gay being manager in the store. I was extremely disappointed and thought that it was my fuck up, and the only way of proving her wrong was to continue doing what I did to make the sales for the store. But a couple of days before my three-month probation as a new employee was up, I was fired. Officially it was stated that it was because of poor performance but, in the office, they said they did not want someone who was gay working in the store. Clearly I was discriminated for my sexuality and realized that – outside of the bars and gay businesses – I needed to keep my mouth shut and appear straight. Within six months of firing me that store closed; they had needed me to keep the doors open. This happened in the mid ’90s and, because it happened during probate, there was absolutely nothing I could do about it. I eventually got hired to work at another computer store across the street from Chinook Centre. During the first several months I pretended I was straight. But again I got outed. Some computer hardware I ordered for the Men For Men BBS system came into the store. I was again pulled into the office and already regretting the fact I was gay; that I was going to be fired. I sat down with the manager and they brought up the order. They asked me what Men For Men was about and I had to fully disclose – while pretty much having a panic attack. Once done explaining, they said the fact I was gay wasn’t of concern, but if Men For Men BBS would be a conflict of interest or competing business to the computer store. I was beside myself. So no issues that I am gay. They said hell no. They said the lesbians who worked there outed me, and three of them were the top sales’ staff of the computer store chain. They wanted diversity in their stores. Within a year, I got promoted to sales manager and was given my own retail floor to run, which had a lesbian operations manager. The staff was amazing to deal with. For my birthday, we celebrated at Boyztown, and some male staff entered the amateur strip contest. That happened about 20 ago. You would assume that employment would not be an issue today, but that is not the case for the trans community. Unless you are working for organizations that are actively part of the LGBTQ+ community, or you know everyone around is an ally, you could easily be slowly forced out of your job. If you start transitioning or you get outed for being trans, management can still find a way of moving you away from staff who are uncomfortable, or just figure out how to replace/fire you. Another issue is dealing with law enforcement. When someone decides to transition, it takes years to do. There have been issues where law enforcement will use the old pronoun and name from a person’s driver’s license, even though they ask repeatedly to be called by their current name and pronoun. It becomes insulting. I have had issues where I have been talking to a telemarketer or call-centre on the phone and they start calling me “miss” or www.gaycalgary.com
“madam”, or they ask several times if they are talking to Steve. How many people in the LGBTQ+ community are recognized with the wrong pronoun? Do you get offended? Do you laugh it off? But think of that happening when you are carded by an officer, or written a ticket, or even in a courtroom. It is a lack in diversity training that perpetrates this disrespect. Another issue faced is suicide. Once you start transitioning to the gender you are most comfortable with, a lot of worry is generated in how people will react. Look at how much of a controversy it is just to be allowed in the proper bathroom. We know about it because it gets headlines and everyone talks about it, but suicides and the emotional struggles don’t get the same attention. The daily harassment, attacks and murders of trans individuals are, many times, overlooked by the gay and lesbian community. Amid the early years of running the BBS, I was over at my aunt’s place helping her with a house party while my family was away on summer holidays. The day after the successful party, she thanked me. Then she brought up that someone had commented to her that I might be gay. I asked her why? She grabbed a knife and said that if I was gay, I should kill myself; that gay people don’t procreate or contribute to society. She was dead serious. I quickly bullshitted that I had a girlfriend, using a name from the “Anne of Green Gables” novels, the last thing I watched. I expressed to her that – since she works in the cosmetic industry selling perfumes and makeup – without the gay community, she would be out of a job. She said that would not be the case, I said I beg to differ. After that I did whatever I could to avoid visiting her – if she called I said I was busy – until, after Rob and I started dating, my mom demanded that we go over for my uncle’s birthday. She told me that she knew Rob and I were dating and, now, had no issues with gay people. She had seen the Carly’s Angels show in Inglewood and thought it was great. Then she asked Rob and I who wears the dress in the relationship? We both stated neither of us do. She asked who does the cooking, cleaning and house work? I said I do the cooking, Rob does the cleaning, and we both do the other house chores. As coming out as gay, lesbian or queer becomes generally easier, we forget that it is still not easy for others. Are we there for those people, or are we turning a blind eye? In Lethbridge, speaking openly with many trans individuals around a dinner table – about their relationships, problems in the community, if they are happy in their relationships with their partners – made my weekend. Though I know many trans people in the community, we don’t ever get a chance to just go for dinner or go over to each other’s homes and, if we are out in public, we always talk shop. Deonie and her friends helped start a dialogue; awareness of what we still need in the community. At Edmonton Pride, it was great to see the Indigenous community finally included on stage, helping to open Pride. Gay Pride has been so focused around gay white men that sometimes we forget about the two-spirit community, as well as rest of the LGBT+ community in Indigenous communities. When GayCalgary set about researching the history of two-spirit roles within Indigenous communities, we found it very difficult to get information. Much of it was lost due to the cleansing of the Indigenous culture/forced assimilation that occurred in Canada. Christian missionaries played a big part in trying to wipe that away and, just like the hatred that was created towards the gay and lesbian community, they tried to remove references to two-spirit in the Indigenous culture. As the LGBTQ+ community rallied around the “It Gets Better” campaign for queer youth, and create awareness about queer youth suicide, youth including queer youth, are committing suicides in the Indigenous community. We used to comment on social media every time we heard about another suicide of a LGBTQ+ youth, but have we forgotten that suicides are still happening? Do we, as a community, not care that youth are committing suicide in the Indigenous community, where some of the individuals could be also from our community? Do they suffer from a lack of support services? How can things get better for them when it feels like the discussion around youth suicide does not continue unless the headline pairs “Queer youth” and “Suicide” together?
After such a positive weekend in Lethbridge I returned to a rude awakening. Several times, as I was explaining the positive experience that I had there, different individuals who I was having conversations with made transphobic comments. They said how disgusting it was that they don’t “complete” their surgery, that trans individuals should expect to be attacked, that they should make up their mind on what gender they are, and more. There is still hatred within our own community towards others; towards being sexually fluid or gender fluid. We fought to be accepted because the majority stated that we should all be straight, but we have a long way to go. Maybe it will take more open discussions, away from social media and distraction. We can write about these things, but I don’t know how much gets through. Pride, Fairytales Film Festival, Coming Out Monologues and other events are a way of getting a message out and educating the community, but we need to go further in conveying our support and acceptance, or we become no different than the people saying that being gay is wrong. When I called the magazine GayCalgary, I felt that would be an umbrella term for the entire LGBTQ+ community. Only in the past ten years has the word queer become more recognized. When we started using it in the magazine, we faced backlash because people thought it was derogatory; people were put into mental institutions for the mental condition “queer”. I know that if I had started the magazine calling it QueerCalgary, most businesses would not give us the time of day. It was hard enough just being GayCalgary. As the community evolved, I was smart enough to register queercalgary.com, queeredmonton.com and queeralberta.com about ten years ago, and have them pointing to the GayCalgary.com website.

KURIOS Brings the Big Top To Edmonton Cirque’s Cabinet of Curiosities open at Northlands until August 13th
photos by Martin Girard / shootstudio.ca Costumes: Philippe Guillotel © 2014 Cirque du Soleil
By Jason Clevett Since debuting in Montreal in 2014, Cirque Du Soleil’s KURIOS – The Cabinet of Curiosities has taken the world by storm. Written and directed by Michel Laprise, KURIOS runs until August 13th at Northlands. “Creating KURIOS was a great process. The planets had aligned and we assembled a great team. It was Cirque’s 30th anniversary so we wanted to reinvent ourselves. There are a lot of new things but at the same time we wanted to go back to the soul of Cirque Du Soleil which is something very human and magical,” Laprise told GayCalgary. “The process started with total freedom. I took a few days and started to do research. I started to do research into electricity which lead me to the second half of the 19th century. A lot of things like gramophones, telegraph and the railway system were invented to connect people. We decided to go steampunk for the esthetic of the show. We wanted to do a feel-good show that also spoke about inclusion. There is a big net act that I love, it speaks to the philosophy of Kurious. We have a circle of people around a guy in the middle and they project him into the air to do tricks. This element of together we can combine our energy to bring each other to the highest level possible which he could not reach
by himself. The collective aspect is very present. It’s a very joyful show with a lot of humor in it. The music is great and it makes people feel good. We’re breaking sales records everywhere.” In addition to the big top tours, Cirque has residency shows in Las Vegas, Orlando and New York and also does arena tours similar to concerts. Laprise talked about the difference in being the big top for KURIOS. “The shape of the stage is great because it is 270 degrees. You feel the audience and the audience is never further than 50 feet from the stage. The eye level of the artist is closer to the audience. Usually we have turntables and traps on stage. I removed that. I put together a list of things we always do with the touring shows and asked for each of them if we do it out of necessity or out of habit and being in our comfort zone? Whatever was habit I pulled it out and it challenged us to reinvent. The money we used for the turntables we put to other things. In the big top show compared to the residence shows is that intimacy. You are 2500 people but feel like you are in someone’s living room which is why I love doing big top shows.” While it is awe inspiring the first time to see acrobats, contortionists and other talents on stage, if you’ve seen Cirque before the novelty expires and the challenge lies in keeping things fresh. “It is all about the way you stage it. People know the disciplines and that is a better thing because we can play with them. For example, we can put a contortion act on a giant hand and it changes everything. One of peoples’ favorite acts in Kurious is the contortion and that is a big surprise for me. Right now, I am creating 2 new shows for Cirque and I am using some disciplines like juggling and reinventing it. Just the fact that we have the juggler juggling hands in this show or juggling in the air, that is really difficult. It was a lot of training to
12
GayCalgary Magazine #161, June/July 2017
www.gaycalgary.com
reach the level that we wanted in this show. It’s a collection of details that make it possible to reinvent the discipline.” Circus artistry has become mainstream and is often part of large pop music tours, especially from female artists. Concerts from the likes of Britney Spears, Cher, Pink and Katy Perry often feature thrilling acrobatics that can be tied back to Cirque’s influences. “I feel very proud of that. Before Cirque circus artists were not really trendy. Now we have brought back the novelness to the art and respect for the craft. To see it populating nightclubs and pop shows is great for us because we are connected to everyone that does circus on the planet. I am glad to see it in other contexts. When the company was created it was clear that we were an artistic company. We never do marketing studies about what we should do with shows. To see that we have an influence I am really happy for the audience and the artist.” Arguably one of the first to incorporate that style and one of the biggest performers on earth is Madonna. Laprise worked with the icon on both her Super Bowl halftime show and her MDNA tour. “I worked with her on the Super Bowl and then she asked me to do her show. She is a hardworking person and a very committed artist and we share that. When we had a meeting at her place with the top executives of the NFL and found out there were 3 days between the stadium rehearsal and the show. She refused to take three days off, we built a second set to keep rehearsing. She is super smart and one of the funniest girls to interact with. She is committed to her craft and I love that. Many pop artists are about themselves, she is about the art. She goes to avant garde shows and watches international shows. She is a very curious artist and that is why it is so much fun to work with her. I think we will work again in the future, it’s just a question of scheduling.”
www.gaycalgary.com
KURIOS has received rave reviews (including our review of the show in Calgary in 2015 - http://gaycalgary.com/a4614) Laprise shared why he feels the show has connected with audiences and why you should go see it. “Because I get a royalty on every ticket sold?” he said, laughing. “I believe in what the show does to people. In today’s world, it is good to be reminded that humans have the possibility to go beyond their limitations. I buy my own ticket to see the show in each city because it gives me great joy and recharges my batteries. The planets were aligned with this show and we really worked hard to make a show that was different and make people feel good. I am sensitive to what is going on the planet right now, and if I can remind people that when we are together and inclusive everybody is moving forward. I am glad to say it is the first show that has the rainbow featured in it, with the hand puppetry. When we go to Russia we will have that rainbow. Come see it because it is a fun show and it is a show where inclusion is important and because it’s damn good. We work every single day and I give notes. You have to work work work. This is a living thing so you need to input energy into it. We love this show.”

Fat One’s All For it!
Joey Fatone at Calgary Expo on his career in both hot dogs and entertainment photo by Gary Gershoff via Getty Images
By Achiru Best known as a member of the boyband NSYNC, ItalianAmerican singer, dancer, actor and television personality Joseph Anthony Fatone Jr. launched a hot dog franchise called Fat One’s Hot Dogs and Italian Ice just last summer. He jokes about how “No one can ever pronounce [his surname] properly.” Joey: Usually yeah. It’s either Fatone, Fatoni, Fat-one, Fay-tone, Tonno… They get it all messed up.
Jason: So, what is it for the record? Joey: Well in America of course it’s Fa-tone. *nods* But when I was
younger I used to be called Fat One. I accepted it and I had fun with it.
Jason: And now you’re making a hot dog franchise out of it. Joey: Isn’t that great? I know. It’s hilarious. Yeah I started doing this
thing called “Fat One’s.” Who knew?! Yeah I started this hot dog franchise; let’s see what’s going to happen. I started in Florida, two different places, one over by Orlando [Mall], one more down south, and we’ll see what happens.
Jason: So, as you’re doing events like the different comic expos and events around the country, because your career has changed so much, what are you finding? Are you finding a lot of people are coming to you because of the zombie movie or … I imagine most of them are [because] of NSYNC, or various other projects that you’ve done too? Joey: Yeah I think it’s a mixture of everything. You know it all depends on in what light people have seen me in; whether it be hosting or … doing Dead 7 or Fat Greek Wedding. It’s actually kind of nice that it’s been across the board like that—just well rounded of different things. And it’s nice to be able to explore stuff like that and hopefully I don’t suck at any of them.
14
GayCalgary Magazine #161, June/July 2017
We don’t think you suck at any of those things Joey. We really don’t.
Jason: It’s got to feel nice with such a demand of people saying, “So is there going to be another concert and are you going to do a tour?” Joey: It’s crazy people still talk about it! You know it’s actually pretty exciting... It’s cool we’re still in the eye of the public and that’s why… Myself and Justin do a lot of stuff out there… and it’s still in that realm so people are still questioning “Hey is it ever going to happen? Hey, is it ever going to happen?” You know what; you never say never, but as of right now… “Probably not.” It is very nice and very warming to know that a lot of parents out there, because they are now parents—they’re adults and have kids, are handing down the legacy and listening to NSYNC and so now these kids are like, “Hey I listen to you because of my mom.” It’s awesome! Jason: You guys had epic choreography. So is that part of what the stumbling block is? Just the thought of having to do all that choreography you did in your twenties now? ‘Cause they’d be expecting everything. Joey: Oh man! When we did the MTV award with Justin we thought we were just singing and he said “You’re going to be dancing” and I was like, “I’m sorry, what?” Jason: Ha ha ha! Joey: I was sweating profusely! When we did the rehearsals, it was
hilarious. Me and Chris were like “Okay we’re getting too old for this stuff man, I can’t keep up,” and we weren’t even dancing that much but you know, it’s all about conditioning! If I did it longer then it might be okay. But trying to get back into stuff like that, it’s like “Uhhhhhggghh… Tired.”
Jason: You guys were obviously aware you had a massive gay fan base. What did that mean to you guys? Joey: Well it sucks that Lance didn’t come out until after the fact that… I mean we probably would’ve had a lot more fans… so thanks a lot Lance!
www.gaycalgary.com
Jason: Ha ha! Joey: I think it’s amazing because we would do these different concerts
in different places and different cities and it’s amazing to see how the gay community has definitely… they’re a lot more accepted over the years. You know the funny thing is you’ll see one concert where it’s all just kids, then you’ll see a concert where it’s all college kids, then we’ll see kids with their parents and stuff like that and we’ll see a whole bunch of gay community [members] and we embrace all of it! That’s the beauty of it. Music is music no matter what and everybody is a person no matter what gender they like. I mean let’s be honest who gives a crap, that’s your personal preference and what you do and that’s great! So for me it’s anybody that comes out and enjoys music and has a good time—I’m all for it!
Jason: Was there any discussion from management or various people that were involved in running the juggernaut that was NSYNC about “if any of you guys are [gay] we don’t want to hear about it.” Joey: No! Nobody said anything! It was really Lance’s mentality… he didn’t want to say anything because he didn’t know if it was going to jeopardize the group. He wanted to, I believe. I was actually the first one to find out—out of the other guys. … I said “Dude I’m not saying anything; it’s your decision.” You know I’m not going to be the one to tell the [other] guys, “Hey did you know Lance is gay?” *shakes head* “It’s your decision man! I love you I support you in whatever you want to do.” It’s that kind of thing. No one has ever said, “Well if you are, don’t say.” It was not like that, which was great. We all relied on each other and supported each other. The minute he did come out it was the same thing. “Hey dude, we’re here for you; whatever you need.” Jason: I think the story that was making the rounds was you caught him. Is that accurate? Joey: Uh no, it is kind of accurate. I really didn’t catch him in the act. So let’s not get there. What really happened was we were at a club one night and we all went out drinking. We came back to his house. We all hung out with a bunch of friends of ours, the ones we all hung out with in Orlando. I went to his guest bedroom and I passed out. I woke up at 4:00 in the morning and *pretends to check watch* “I gotta go home!” So I
Joey Fatone in Inkubus went to go say goodbye to him! I went and knocked, I went to his room; he wasn’t in his room. I went outside, he wasn’t outside. I went to his other guest room. He wasn’t there. I opened up his office door and one of our friends, I know him, was sitting on his lap in the chair. I was like *points index finger* “Let me know when you’re done!” I just closed the door and he was like, “No come in! Nothing’s going on.” So I went, okay, I walked in and he went, “Surprise!” I’m like, “Hey what’s up?” and he was like, “Now you know.” I said, “Dude, I don’t care, I love ya, but your mom is probably gonna kill ya.” *laughs* That’s all I said. “Let’s just figure this out.” He said, “Don’t tell the guys. I wanna tell them later on my own time.” *puts up hands* “Dude that’s your business; that’s your thing” so…
Jason: Ha ha! The one from Mississippi had to be gay. So what’s next for you after the Expo? What’s on the agenda? Joey: Just been taking it easy a little bit. Right now dealing with the Fat One’s Place and spending more time with my kids and a couple more of these *gestures at convention.* Just taking a little more chill pill; I just finished up My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 and then I also did Dead 7 so doing that whole press thing now like—Kinda like chill daddy mode, if you will. So… *nods* Jason: That has a whole other connotation… *shakes head* Joey: *laughs* Jason: *laughs* Joey: Ha ha ha! Jason: Joey is now a daddy. Joey: Well usually I’m a bear. In the community I’m called a bear. Or
I’m a cub! I’m not as old I guess? Is older more of a bear?
Jason: It’s more build. Joey: It’s more build? Okay. Like a build-a-bear? Jason: Yeah just like that. Joey: I said it! That’s a new one! You have a new one now! Jason: Steve? I know you’re behind the camera but cub? Or bear? Steve: Or build? Joey: It’s not very hairy, it’s just a little. Steve: You’re still a little bit young. Joey: I’m still young. That’s what I’m saying. I’m 39. Jason: All right so you’re a bear. Joey: All right! *Everyone laughs* Keep on being an entertainer Joey. We love you.

Holdoring On to Our Love of Kristian Nairn Game of Thrones Actor on beloved character and being a “celebrity bear”
Kristian Nairn as Hodor on Game of Thrones, photo by HBO
by Jason Clevett Warning – This Article Contains Spoilers. It was May 22nd, 2016, the long weekend in Canada. I’d spent the weekend in Edmonton and the friend I was staying with had friends over to watch the latest episode of Game of Thrones. The tone of the room changed over the course of the episode, and by the time it ended with Hodor “holding the door” to his death, you could hear a pin drop. The character, played by Irish actor Kristian Nairn, was a man of one word, and had become a beloved part of the series. Considering the shows habit of killing off characters left, right and center, Hodor’s death was remarkable in the profound grief that hit fans of the show. “When I read the script I realized it was well written and a cool thing. I didn’t expect the effect that it had on everybody. I certainly never expected President Obama to mention it in an interview! I didn’t think it would be so far reaching. I am glad for the character. I loved Hodor and it’s nice to see the quiet guy getting recognized,” Nairn told GayCalgary during an interview at the 2017 Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo. “With Game of Thrones everyone seems to be dying. With things like the Red Wedding we lost three principal cast members at once. Not only were we losing big characters we were losing friends as well. When the bell tolled for me it was around the time of my 40th birthday. It was a whole big emotional mess.” An accomplished DJ as well as an actor, Nairn made headlines in 2014 when he was asked in an interview about being popular in the bear community and replied “that’s my community.” Nairn acknowledged the support of his gay fanbase and agreed
www.gaycalgary.com
that being a bearish man himself, representation outside of the Hollywood stereotype is important. “The funny thing is to say I came out was a bit of a stretch, I was never actually in. I had the joy of two comings out. There was coming out to my friends and family and everyone who knew me in Belfast. All of a sudden, I was surprised to see that people didn’t know how to use google. I had definitely talked about it in interviews before so I was surprised by the big reaction. It is important for people to be visible and for people to see that we aren’t all 18-year-old twinks with a size 20 waist. Also for actors as well you have a Hollywood image and I think Game of Thrones has been very good to bring all different shapes and sizes of characters forward. I never really considered myself a bear because I only grew a beard for game of thrones. I have had a lot of support from the bear community and its meant a lot to me.” At 6’11 with a boatload of charm, it’s a surprise that Nairn is single. With Game of Thrones being so popular, undoubtedly some have tried some unique pickup lines. “The obvious one is “was that your real dick?” They cut straight to the core. That’s obviously a very interesting conversation for over dinner to announce it’s a prosthetic. You should probably just go home if that’s what you’re after.”

A New Beer for a New Frontier
Feel the Burns at Village Brewery
by Janine Eva Trotta Heart of the new ‘barley district’, or so it’s shaping up to be, Village Brewery launched The Senator ale his month in celebration of Alberta’s 112th birthday. A hearty beverage, weighing in at 6.0 per cent, the limited-edition Belgian White IPA won’t affront the lager drinker, but doesn’t puss out on hops either. It’s bitter and robust; it craves a partner of beef brisket or cowboy caviar. This is the bottle you bring to a buddy when his ride needs work, or to the ladies’ post trail blaze.
The Senator was brewed in a single batch: with tropical, mosaic, Amarillo and Waimea hops; Ardennes yeast; and an Alberta barley malt. Village launched the drink at their taproom on July 20th. Senator Patrick Burns, from whom the ale receives its namesake, came to Calgary in 1890 and lead a successful career as a cattle rancher. In 1902, he acquired Bow Valley Ranche from William Roper Hull – the inspiration for the beer launched last summer by Village. In 2008, Burns’s long life of public service and philanthropy was recognized with the Greatest Alberta Citizen prize, as voted by a poll through the Calgary Herald. Though Alberta’s actual birthday doesn’t take place until September, Village decided to release The Senator on the anniversary of the day The Alberta Act was granted Royal Assent in mother England. Don’t miss your opportunity to try it out while quantities last.

Music Bear Cuts The Static
photos by Maxwell Ander
By Casey Arasa Rapper Music Bear Tony Banks describes himself as a gay, black man with the fun of Missy Elliot, the swag of LL Cool J and the dance moves of Heavy D. Born in Brooklyn in the early 80’s, he grew up during the golden era of hip-hop. Early on in his musical journey, Music Bear dreamed of being a vocalist. He sang in church and wrote R&B songs and poetry. As he matured, he found himself gravitating towards hip-hop. Despite the misogyny and homophobia that exists in hiphop, he believes that at its core, hip-hop is love. He calls it soulful, empowering, fun, beautiful and caring. It’s the music industry that prizes money and cars and labels women as hoes that he blames. “Hate is a learned behavior. No one is born homophobic but when hip-hop artists spread that message to millions of people, it catches on and after being around for a few decades, it’s hard to break away from.” “However, not impossible,” he adds. Music Bear is hoping to inspire change in the culture by staying true to who he is as a gay man and an artist. In his upcoming album, “Yes Homo,” he tackles issues like love, lust, partying, the state of hip-hop and police brutality. It’s meant to be a full depiction of what it means to be a black, gay, male, hip-hop artist in 2017. His first single, “Static,” is out now. We spoke to him from his New York home. GC: What is like to be gay and black today? TB: To be black and gay in hip-hop today is as hard as it was in the 80’s, but things are changing. The next generation won’t care so much about who you sleep with. The young kids in the hip-hop community today are making superstars out of genderbending artists and it’s very exciting. Everyone has a story to tell. I’m telling mine and I’m just so glad someone is listening. 20
GayCalgary Magazine #161, June/July 2017
GC: Have you experienced racism in the gay community? TB: You can’t escape racism in 2017. It’s just easier to be more bold about it hiding behind a keyboard like in the gay apps. I’ve been called the N-word, Monkey, and more, and I’ve seen screen grabs of others conversations. It still occurs in the bars too. We have to continue to bring these issues and discussions to light in order to grow as a community of minorities. GC: Why is it important for you to address topics like police brutality in your music? TB: I talk about police brutality in my song, ‘Run’, featuring LGBT artists EarthTone and JwlB. I wrote that song at a time when there were many cases pending and lots of cops getting off. Black Lives Matter marches were in progress and I had to get my feelings out. It’s a really powerful house track that is getting great buzz in the UK. Coming soon to the US. GC: The first song from your upcoming Yes Homo is “Static”. What inspired the track? TB: I know too many people who stay in relationships that aren’t healthy. I was one of them a few years ago, but my ex and I are good now. When it comes to ‘Static,’ the writing of this track started, oddly enough, as a freestyle one very early morning while I was still half sleep. And I just kept writing as if someone I loved was doing me and themselves wrong and enough was enough. It was time to break free. It touches a lot of people and I am proud of that. Hopefully it helps someone. GC: Why did you decide to make it the first track off Yes Homo? TB: When I recorded the track, it felt right. It sat well with me and I felt that it was something people needed to hear as a national introduction to me finding myself as an artist. So far, so good. GC: Why did you name the album Yes Homo? Is it because people are surprised to learn you are, in fact, gay?
www.gaycalgary.com
TB: In hip-hop culture, it’s become normal to say, “No Homo” after saying something that may seem of a homosexual nature. Almost as a cover to boost ones masculinity. “Damn that test was hard…No Homo”. “I like that shirt…No Homo”. As if being gay is a bad thing. So I’m saying, “Yes Homo”. “Yes” to all things perceived as gay. “Yes” to loving who the hell you want. “Yes” to living your life. “Yes” to being free.
GC: You’re not a stereotypical homo in that you don’t drink and you’re not into drama. Has that made it difficult for you to ingratiate yourself within the community? TB: I don’t believe that there is a stereotypical homo. That’s an image pushed by media that we know to be very one sided. We are all different and that’s what makes us a rich community of diverse people. But no, I don’t drink often and I’m not into drama. That would be me if I were straight too, but because the gay media often likes to push a certain image of what’s acceptable in the gay community, I do have to work harder to be accepted for my talents. You don’t see a lot of people like me in magazines and on TV. In those times I remind myself that my music is for everyone so I bring it to everyone from all walks of life. That’s the joy of being an artist. GC: You advise gay men to try something different every once in a while. Break from monotony. Cut the static. What new things are you trying this summer? TB: I’m working on becoming a DJ as well as a recording artist. Why not, right? The reason I say to try something different every once in a while is I want people who listen to my music and watch my videos to not be afraid to shake things up. You might just enjoy it! In fact, I know you will. Follow on Facebook @ MusicBearTonyBanks/, Instagram @ musicbeartonyb/ and Twitter @ musicbeartonyb.

Realestate
Things to Do Before Listing Your Home By GayRealEstate.com Are you preparing to sell your home? If so, you probably have a dollar amount that you need to get in order to pay off your current mortgage or to purchase your next home. Ideally, though, you’ll get more than that. In order to get your asking price or more, you need to make certain your house is in the best condition possible. Before you list your home, here are a few things you can do to improve your chances of getting your asking price. The first thing you can do is paint. That may seem like a very small detail, but it can do a lot to make your home look better. Even if the paint doesn’t have any chips, scratches, or marks on it, chances are that it has faded. By putting down a new coat of paint, even if it’s the same color, you’ll make your home look better. Don’t forget to touch up the exterior, too. Your curb appeal is incredibly important. If the exterior has missing paint and is obviously dirty and dingy, you won’t get as many lookers. Even if you have recently painted, you might think about doing one new topcoat, especially over white or other light colors. Take the time to de-clutter your home. You want a potential buyer to be able to imagine themselves living in your house, and it’s hard for them to do that if you have things spread out all over. Pick up laundry, put away your children’s toys, and straight up any piles of mail you have. Do whatever you can to make your home look as spacious as possible, even if that means putting some things in boxes or taking them out to the garage. If possible, you may even want to rent a storage unit and store a lot of your unused furniture and items there. The less stuff you have crammed in a room, the larger that room is going to look. That, in turn, will make it more attractive to the buyer. If you’re going to continue to live in your house while it’s being shown to potential buyers, you have to keep it as clean as possible. In fact, you’re going to want to go above and beyond your normal level of cleaning. That’s going to be somewhat difficult to maintain, especially if you have children or pets, but do your best. If possible, clean some rooms and stop using them except when you absolutely need to. People will understand if you’re still living in the home, but remember, the cleaner, the better. Pay special attention to the floors. In fact, you will want to have your carpets cleaned by a professional. Make sure the halls, entryway, and any other area with high traffic is given a very thorough cleaning. When someone walks into your home, they should see a pristine, clean area. Your real estate agent may ask that you leave the home when someone comes to view it. Ask them to give you as much notice as possible so you can do some last-minute cleaning and straightening before you go. Don’t be alarmed at this request, either. Agents generally prefer to show an empty house. Potential buyers may get very nervous if you’re still there. They need to have the freedom to really look at the home and ask the agent any questions they might have. Get the Yard in shape. Remember that one of the first things your real estate agent is going to do is take pictures of the property for its online listing. You want those pictures to look amazing. That means get your yard cleaned up, mowed, and looking as good as possible. Trim up the trees, get rid of any dead plants, and make sure there’s nothing overgrown or out of control. Even though the plants may not be a part of the house itself, people will assume you treat the house the same way you treat the yard. If it’s well-kept, they will assume the house is, too. If it shows that you don’t pay attention to it, potential
www.gaycalgary.com
buyers might assume you haven’t paid attention to any of the little details in the house, either. Fix anything that’s broken or even slightly damaged. Light fixtures, windows, mirrors, towel bars, and anything else that is cracked or otherwise in need of repair needs to be fixed. What might seem like a minor thing to you may be a deal breaker to someone else. Finding the right real estate agent is another key component of selling your home for your asking price. For those who are in the LGBT community, finding an agent who identifies as a member of that community can be a good idea. These agents will understand your particular needs and will be able to help you find buyers who will be interested in your home. You can find these real estate agents on www.GayRealEstate.com, a website dedicated to LGBT real estate. Once you’ve found a great agent, as them to do a walkthrough of your home and make notes. Your agent is going to know the market and what people are currently looking for. They will be able to make suggestions about what to change or repair in order to attract the most buyers. They may have a few ideas that aren’t on this list that buyers in your specific area have been asking for. Follow their advice—your agent is your best source of information. With the right real estate agent on your side, you’ll be able to prepare your home to impress potential buyers. Just always do what you can to repair as much as possible and then keep your home clean. While it can be a challenge if you’re still living there, it will pay off in the long run.

Murder for Two Hilariously Brilliant Theatre
Actors create magic in Stage West Production
photos by John Watson
By Jason Clevett Amidst the big Broadway style musical productions and popular musical revues, Stage West will put on shows that may not be well known, but are often quite enjoyable. In the case of the current production Murder for Two what it lacks in recognition it more than makes up for in quality. 90 minutes of nonstop laughs, twists and turns make for an incredibly enjoyable show. This comes down entirely to its two stars. The ridiculously cute Brandon Lambert plays officer Marcus, summoned to the home of a great American author to keep an eye on things until a detective arrives to investigate. John Wascavage plays everyone else. Literally. With just a change in posture and voice and an occasional small prop, he effortlessly transforms between an assortment of characters. From a arguing couple to a group of young kids to a ballet dancer, Wascavage’s performance is a treat to watch unfold. The success of the show entirely depends on its cast, and the further advantage of this production is that Lambert and Wascavage have worked together in the show before. They did a lengthy run in Pittsburgh and worked together on the US National tour before bringing the show to Calgary. Their long built up chemistry shows on stage. There are moments built into the script that are improvised, and seeing the grin on Wascavage’s face as he throws Lambert for a loop trying to crack him up is awesome. If being hilarious and talented actors wasn’t enough, another remarkable aspect of the stars is their incredible piano playing. Murder for Two is a musical, although there are not a lot of 24
GayCalgary Magazine #161, June/July 2017
numbers in the show. It’s pretty jaw dropping watching them work the keys – at some points with their eyes closed – and really makes you appreciate just how good the talents in this show are. It’s part of the whole package that makes Murder for Two a must see. Stage West’s culinary team has outdone themselves with one of the best meals they have offered in recent shows. The charred spicy baby octopus and shrimp, lobster and lemon ravioli and blackened red snapper were highlights. Dessert featured a maple syrup cheesecake that was incredible along with staples like the dipped Florentine cookies and rum balls. Add on some excellent service (on this night we had Miranda, who was a lot of fun) and you have everything you need for a night of theatre away from the summer heat. I haven’t said much about the rest of the plot of Murder for Two because saying too much would take away from the experience. A mix of classic whodunit murder mystery and over the top comedy, it’s a show that should not be missed.

T-Fal ActiFry Express Box of the T-fal ActiFry Express, photo by GayCalgary
by Steve Polyak When the first T-Fal ActiFry came out, my sister decided to talk my family into buying me one as a birthday present. I used is several times in the first year, but not much after that. We don’t often eat French fries at home, since we eat those out, and recipes were still limited on what we could do outside of them and wings. When I received the T-Fal ActiFry Express for review, at least I knew I could to a side-by-side comparison. According to the marketing material, it is supposed to be 20 per cent faster. I wanted to see if that held up. During the unboxing, I commented on video that the T-Fal ActiFry Express looked bigger than the original. When I placed them side by side, it turns out that they are the same size, just the top dome of the new model is round, where the original is flatter with the center of it dropping down a bit. Unlike a deep fryer, in which you use a lot of oil, the ActiFry line is designed to use only a tablespoon or none at all. The ActiFry line is unique looking. It’s like T-Fal took one of their non-stick frying pans, put a hole in it so you can snap in a spindle that stirs the food while cooking, a dome and on the backside, and a convention oven fan. There is no heat coming from below the cooking tray, just the hot air blowing down from above and circulating around the dome. After I did the cooking comparison, I noticed the cooking pan was interchangeable between the original and the Express models, so it can handle a kilo of food. They added a better panel to the Express model, which allows you to select what type of food you’re cooking for preset time. Both models are very easy to clean. The lid, paddle (which
26
GayCalgary Magazine #161, June/July 2017
stirs the food), pan and measuring spoon is all dishwasher safe. A big change is that the original pan is shallow in the center, so you can’t fill the pan with liquid beyond the height of the paddle mount. If you do, it could leak out into the base. The new unit has the pan just about the same height as the outside edge so you can add liquid if the recipe calls for it, like for risotto. On the side by side comparison, I had both the original and the express sitting side by side on the counter. I sliced the potatoes up and made sure both machines received close to half the amount of potatoes. I added a tablespoon of oil in each and turned them on at the same time. Both seem to emit the same volume of sound from the fan running, comparable to that of a microwave oven. As it cooks, the paddle – which is center of the pan – slowly stirs the food for an even cooking of all sides. It also helps to keep food from sticking. Out of curiosity, at the 30-minute mark I checked to see how the fries were coming along, and neither were done yet. In the end, both units take about the same length of time to cook a batch of fries, which is about 40 to 45 minutes. The method of prep on the potatoes included having them soak in ice water, then dried on paper towels. I tried a batch without the ice water bath, just a rinse and pat dry method, and it still took about the same amount of time. However, unlike an oven or deep fryer, the ActiFry does not need to be preheated. In terms of cooking time, it does take longer than deep frying a batch of fries, but the tradeoff is that you use a lot less oil. It is recommended that you put your seasonings on the potatoes before you start cooking them. Because the potatoes are cooked with hot air, spices and salt don’t stick, so tossing them post cooking won’t work. You could also bake fries in less time than the ActiFry takes but, again, you are using more oil to do so, though less than a deep fryer. You can use frozen
www.gaycalgary.com
photos by T-fal fries in the ActiFry too, just don’t add any oil, since they usually come with that already added. Most people who buy the ActiFry will do so to make healthy French fries, but it does cook other things. I have done chicken wings in it. The wings tends to shrink a bit in size – as compared to deep frying – I believe because the fat and juice is cooked out of the wing, but then coats the skin, like when basting a roast. You can also cook dishes like stir-fries, chili and other saucy type meals. The Actifry will do the stirring and cooking for you as you continue working away on other things in the kitchen or home. There is a risotto recipe on the T-Fal website that I tried and it turned out well, though it did take longer to make than the traditional method, but it required very little monitoring and handled the continuous stirring for me. The pan is non-stick, so it can handle sticky desert recipes too, and you still don’t have to add very much oil.
get cooked that would otherwise fall apart in the stirring process. It’s a mesh basket that replaces the paddle and sits just above the pan, so the hot air can cook the food from all sides. It goes for about $20. It may not be a time saver, but it is a great way to cook if you are looking to eat healthy and don’t want to stand at the oven to stir. The T-Fal ActiFry Express goes for about $220 to $300 depending on the retailer.

Unlike a deep fryer, you cannot cook anything that is battered in the Actifry. With the paddle constantly stirring, it would scrape the coating off the meat. But there is an ActiFry Snacking Grill that allows foods to

In other words, ignoring the high quality filmmaking angle for just a bit and indulging our more basic instincts, there’s going to be a lot of naked dude sex in this movie. Sold yet? Young Justice already has queer characters? Sometimes it’s more than neo-Nazis and their favorite new president on Twitter. Sometimes it’s TV series creators clapping back at anti-gay trolls. We’re talking specifically about Greg Weisman, the co-creator of the animated series Young Justice, who recently tweeted that the show, moving from Cartoon Network to Netflix as we speak, will be revealing the as-yetunspoken queerness of one or more characters. He did so by way of response to people we assume were hiding behind egg avatars, as they hauled out the tired “What about the children?” argument for the inclusion of LGBT characters in a show aimed at kids. What’s odd about this, of course, is that there has been no indication that any of the YJ superheroes are even thinking about their sexual orientation or gender identity. But that’s the beauty of episodic TV, anything can happen in the next episode, even if it’s being done just to rile up the bigots. We’ll be keeping a queer eye on this one to see how it all shakes out. Six Feet Under/True Blood creator Alan Ball is back at HBO

Holly Hunter will star (honestly, this news can begin and end here and we’ll be devoted followers for good, so deep is our love for Ms. Hunter) as a socially conscious Baby Boomer who, along with an as-yet-uncast husband character, adopted children from Vietnam, Somalia, and Colombia a couple decades ago. Now those kids are grown up and one of them is experiencing hallucinations – visions, if you will. Clearly, these visions are not going to respond to medical intervention or they wouldn’t be part of the log line. Let’s just assume they’re destined to involve consequences for everyone. Daniel Zovatto (Fear the Walking Dead) plays the young man who sees beyond, and his siblings include Raymond Lee (most recently seen on Mozart in the Jungle), Jerrika Hinton (Grey’s Anatomy) and daughter of Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick, Sosie Bacon (Scream). When this thing has a name we’ll be on it. Cher takes on Flint’s poison water We haven’t seen much of Cher in film or on TV lately, but her fiery political activism is a constant for anyone who follows her on social media. Now she’s translating that passion into a movie for Lifetime, about the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. In case you’ve been living in a news blackout, corrupt politicians have allowed Flint’s water system to become undrinkable and deadly poisonous, with lead levels at murderous levels, and this situation remains uncorrected since 2014. Now, along with Katie Couric and the gay production team of Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, Cher will co-produce and star in the narrative feature, written by Barbara Stepansky, whose working title is Flint, about this environmental and human disaster. Just don’t expect any Burlesque-style song-and-dance moments. It’s been even longer since we’ve seen Cher in something this topically reminiscent of Silkwood, and it promises to reach for that level of powerful anger. Romeo San Vicente wants Cher’s beat to go on indefinitely.

Philips 2000i Connected Air Purifier
An effective solution for allergens and fire smoke
photos by Philips
by Steve Polyak I do have some allergies from dust and pollen. I tried an ionic type air cleaner, which required constant cleaning, and it did not do very much. I also duct taped a highquality furnace filter to a square fan, which works, but I know it’s not a safe way to air purify. At least the house has a furnace that we can pop those high-quality filters into. It’s great when the furnace is running when it is cold out, but to leave the furnace fan running during the summer is not. The furnace is loud. It’s also pulling in air from outside so, living on a busy road, we sometimes get exhaust fumes or skunk smell. And it’s a waste of electricity if you need it only in one or two rooms. When I received the Philips 2000i Connected Air Purifier to test, I suspected it was going to be an over glorified fan with a high-quality filter. Well it does have a high-quality filter and a fan, but I under estimated what the Philips 2000i Connected Air Purifier can do. The Philips 2000i Connected Air Purifier is designed to do rooms up to 277 square feet, so the machine is a little bit bigger than I thought it would be. It’s Sci-Fi look sees a shiny plastic white body, matte finish black top, and a round opening on the front with a multi-colored LED circle in it. The top has touch sensitive buttons to turn it on, select fan speed, air purification modes, display on and off, timer and filter reset. As you will see in the video, there are three filters in the unit: a coarse one that catches large particles in the air, like cat hair and dust bunnies; an active carbon/charcoal filter to reduce smells and gases; and a HEPA filter that removes dust, allergens some bacteria and viruses as small as .3 microns. According to Philips, the unit captures 99.97 per cent of particles. Turning it on, the unit’s multi-colored lights light up and turn blue if air quality is good. As the air gets poor with particulate, the colour will change to purple, then to red when air quality is poor. It will also display a number from 1 to 12: 1 being clean.

You can manually set the speed of the fan, from sleep mode to turbo speed, which is great when you are doing house cleaning. Within the first hour of use, I started to see big differences in what the Philips 2000i Connected Air Purifier can do compared to a furnace filter or any other air purifier I have used in the past. Built in the side of the unit is an air quality detector. It determines what speed the purifier should run in while in automatic mode. For example, since I am usually working away at the computer in my bedroom, I have it set up close to the foot of the bed. During the day, you don’t realize how much dust settles on your bed sheets. As I get my bed ready, just the movement of the comforter had the Philips 2000i Connected Air Purifier detect poor air quality. The fan sped up to deal with the dust and allergens I had just put into the air. Not only did it do this with me doing up my bed, but it often when I was cooking, cleaning my room, folding clothes, after taking a shower or even having the window open to let in what you assume is fresh air into the house. Having the Philips Air Purifier automatically adjust itself to the conditions is something that a furnace or other low-end air purifiers can’t do. When the air is clean, the unit operates with hardly any sound. When it detects the air quality becoming poor, it will flip through different speeds to one that will deal best with the conditions. The top speed, which you can manually set as turbo mode, is loud and like a furnace fan running. You can also manually change the mode to an extra-sensitive allergen mode, or to the extra-powerful bacteria/virus mode. For the first several weeks, I left it in auto mode, even as I slept. Tossing and turning around in bed while sleeping would send particulates into the air, which would kick it into higher gear. It did make it hard to sleep since. I would then just put it into sleep mode, which also turns off the display lights. With the forest fires that happen in BC and Alberta, the air quality gets to the point where my eyes start to itch. Rob and I had left the windows open in the house to let it cool over night, but in the morning, you could smell the smoke from the forest fires throughout the house. When I put the Philips 2000i www.gaycalgary.com
Connected Air Purifier back into auto mode, it showed how poor the air quality was. I closed all the windows in the house. Within several minutes, it brought the air quality in the room back to good, and the smell of smoke vanished. Maintenance of the filters is easy. The pre-filter that catches things like cat hair can be washed, and you will get the notification once a month to do it. The Active Carbon filter lasts about six months and the HEPA Filter lasts about a year. When you get the notification that the filters need to be replaced, you have 14 days to replace them. After that, the air purifier will stop operating and automatically lock itself. You also need to clean the air quality sensor every two months with a damp cotton swab. This model comes with Wi-Fi support, which uses a thirdparty app, so you can access all the air purifier’s features from your Android or iOS based smartphones or tablets. There is an identical model of the Philips 2000i Connected Air Purifier that does not have the Wi-Fi feature, for a little bit less than the full version. The convenience of being able to control it from anywhere in your house or while in bed is the tradeoff. The Philips AC2885/40 Series 2000 Air Purifier goes for about $450, whereas the Wi-Fi/Connected model Philips AC2889/40 Series 2000I goes for about $480. You can buy a two-pack of Active Carbon Filters with a HEPA filter for about $150. If you are living in a place – like a condo or apartment – where the only air you get is from opened windows, this should be something on your radar. If you have allergies I do recommend it. I have only needed to pop allergy pills once this year so far, and it was because I was outdoors for most of the day. When I am in the area where the air purifier is, I don’t have any issues. There are no ozone smells coming from it like some other units, just clean air.

Queen & Adam Lambert Remain Concert Champions Legends return to Alberta at Rogers Place By Jason Clevett When Queen with Adam Lambert came to Alberta in June 2014, they set the bar high as one of the best concerts of that year. The legendary original members Brian May and Roger Taylor along with Adam Lambert and their band returned with a single show July 4th at Rogers Place in Edmonton. Somehow the second time was even better than the first.
legends recently as well as the images of Freddie Mercury on screen were a reminder that our icons won’t be around forever and makes them treasured. On this night with thousands of fans showing their appreciation, Queen remained immortal. Setlist: We Will Rock You Hammer to Fall
In part this is because of Lambert. The previous dates were early in the first world tour. While Lambert’s showmanship has shone since he first auditioned for American Idol, with nearly 5 years working with Queen, he boasts a new confidence and power. There were questions when he first joined up with Queen, something the singer even commented on.
Stone Cold Crazy
“I am not trying to be Freddie. I am a fan, just like you guys. I just get to be up here… in the gayest suit you’ve ever seen,” he said. Those doubters and questions have been thoroughly erased and from the second the band teased the arena with a snippet of We Will Rock You followed by Hammer To Fall and Stone Cold Crazy Lambert owned the stage and had the crowd in the palm of his hand. Starting off clad in leather with bright red hair and gloves and shoes to match, making multiple costume changes, and strutting the stage like he owned it Lambert showed that the days of charismatic frontman are not yet dead.
Two Fux
Lambert may be the new kid on the classic songs, but guitarist Brian May at 69 and drummer Roger Taylor at 67 showed why they are such iconic figures in music. They shone both on their instruments and vocally. May took the spotlight for a beautiful version of Love of My Life that featured a video of Freddie Mercury singing alongside. Taylor sang on I Love My Car and filled the vocals originally done by David Bowie on Under Pressure. There was plenty to view on the guitar shaped stage, including a massive moving video screen, a giant robot head, and even Lambert riding a three-wheel bike while singing Bicycle Race. However underneath the showmanship was the true greatness of the show: Two skilled legends combining with an incredibly talented vocalist to bring some of the greatest songs of our lifetime back to the stage. Brought to life they were in stunning glory from I Want It All to Somebody to Love, Who Wants to Live Forever to Radio Ga Ga. Lambert even performed his new single Two Fux. By the time the main set ended with Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen and Adam Lambert had put on a awe inspiring show that was everything a great concert is and should be. Suitably for a hockey rink, the night concluded with a rousing rendition of We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions. When Queen and Adam Lambert toured 3 years ago, it seemed like a once in a lifetime opportunity to see them. Notable losses of iconic musical

Northern Thailand A Must Visit Temples, Mountains, Jungles and More By Jason Clevett Considered one of the most scenic provinces in the country due to its mountain ranges, valleys, and variety of flora and fauna, Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand has become a top tourist destination for those seeking something different from the hustle and bustle of the south. Filled with temples, forests and the bustling capital of Chang Mai itself. Journeying from the elephants of Anantara or towards Laos, one can easily spend the day stopping and exploring the number of historical sites, temples and sites. The most popular and remarkable are the contrasting black house and white temple. The black house, built by Kositpipat’s former teacher Thawan Duchanee, features multiple buildings that are home to an extensive collection of taxidermy and bones. Buffalo skulls, massive crocodile skins, and a whole elephant skeleton are just a few of the oddities that can be found while wandering the impressive grounds. It is both mysterious and interesting to explore.

7 kms away is the white temple. Built by artist and teacher Ajarn Chalermchai Kositpipat, who has devoted his life to the project, this Buddhist temple is pure white and coated in tiny mirrors Surrounded by fountains and pools of water which are home to dozens of albino koi, the contrast between the black house and white temple is astounding. While the temple itself is beautiful, it is surrounded by creepy faces and a sea of hands reaching to the sky. These hands are believed to signify the trials, tribulations and temptations which can distract you from the true path to Heaven. The faces embedded in the ground are those who have fallen prey to such evils, therefore never making it to paradise. Admission to the temple is free. One of the most spectacular temples in Northern Thailand is Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Visitors can either take a tram up the mountain or brave the 309 steps to get to the top. Spectacular views await visitors both of the city below and the assorted temples and idols within. It is important to note that this is holy ground, and proper attire must be worn and footwear removed. The site is believed to have been founded in 1383 and expanded over the centuries. Buddhas made of gold or green glass, stone snakes and elephants, bells and a museum are there to explore. While it is easy to get “templed out visiting some of the over 40,000 temples in Thailand, you do find yourself in awe of the artistry and peacefulness that comes in these ancient places. Markets abound in the area. You can see how parasols are made and purchase them, buy clothing and even get custom painting done on your clothes. The artistry of people in the

The Anantara Chang Mai (http://chiang-mai.anantara. com/) was our host hotel for our one night in Chang Mai. Located just minutes away from the night bazaar and multiple art, culture and nature experiences the Anantara Chang Mai blends colonial architecture with Thai tradition. A spectacular view of the Mae Ping river awaits you as you rest in your luxurious room. The pool is perfect for a refreshing swim after a long day of exploring, or visit their spa for some extra relaxation. The Colonial House, a 90-yearold British consulate house turned restaurant and bar, features a shady teak wood deck overlooking our courtyard garden and the Mae Ping River. The service 1921 features a hidden door that leads to a private dining room. Our meal there was a mix of Indian and Thai dishes. Combined with a special treat of dancers for one of our parties’ birthdays, the Anatara Chang Mai was our shortest stay of the trip and we all wished we could have spent more time enjoying their kind and generous hospitality.

A Reason to be a Lush
Lush Cosmetics Opens Stores in Calgary and Edmonton with New Look
photos by GayCalgary
by Steve Polyak At the start of April, I was invited to check out the new location of Lush Cosmetics at Chinook Centre in Calgary. Lush has had a store in Chinook for several years, but they have been rolling out a new look in large cities. Their new location is 2500 square feet, six times larger than the old location. You may recall the store used to get packed, especially during holidays and sales, to the point that product could not be seen. The new concept was designed to hopefully give customers enough space to check out all products as well as provide a one-on-one experience with their knowledgeable staff. I hadn’t checked to see where the new location was but, as I was walking through Chinook and was getting close to the old location, I could smell the appealing scent of Lush essential oils, and followed my nose. I felt like that toucan on the Fruit Loops commercials. Approaching the storefront, you can easily see all the changes they have made. The entrance way is just about the full width of the store, making it easier to see what Lush has to offer.

The space is bright, colourful, spacious – with sections set up for specific product lines. Right up front are the bright and colourful bath bomb tables, homing quite a selection. Off to the left side is a demonstration counter. This is where they show how things are made or used. For media that came to the grand opening, we were treated to a demonstration of how they make their product “Cup 0’ Coffee”, a face and body mask. I knew that Lush was not like your typical cosmetic company – where product is made in a large-scale factory with ingredients that are questionable – so seeing the product made live was a treat. Lush staff used a hand blender and mixer to create this face-mask. The ingredients were simple: organic coffee beans, agave syrup, vegetable glycerine, vanilla extract, caffeine. They demonstrated that the ingredients were edible too but, depending on what it was, it might taste better than it smells. When they create the products in larger batches, out of either the Vancouver or Toronto offices, they said they it is pretty much done the same way, just with much larger appliances. They walked us through the store showing the different areas dedicated to product categories, each having a theme or purpose. They have an area set up with a hair stylist’s chair and mirror for the area that homes hair products like shampoos, conditioners, styling agents and dyes. Another area is set up for perfumes and colognes. The far back wall looks like it could be a kitchen; with sinks, white ceramic tiles and a wood counter. Face cleansers, hand and body lotions, scrubs, deodorant, products for your feet and other goods are on display there. In front of the back wall is a great new feature. For a moment, I thought they had a salad buffet set up: there were www.gaycalgary.com
Diverse advertising campaigns from LUSH
bowls of colourful creams on ice. It’s their product testing area. Customers looking for face masks or creams can sit down and a consultant will give them a personal demonstration. I decided to try it out. They apply a small sample on an area of your hand, give it a couple minutes to do its thing, then rinse off the product using a wet towel and ask you what you think of the difference. The experience was educational as well as impressive. Lush lets you try out pretty much anything in the store and see if it is right for you, and they will help you decide. I asked if these products on ice were new. They said they have always carried them, just that they could never display them properly. They even have a refrigerator stocked with them. Along the other side of the store, across from the demonstration counter is the display of gift boxes, soaps and body wash. They have a large basin set up to test out the bubbly products and bath bombs, which you know it is a hit for kids. On the tables out front, along with the bath bombs, are the colourful chunks of soap that they cut and wrap up for you, as if in a deli. Lush has always been very progressive in the way they do business, supporting fair trade, community trade and charitable initiatives. Their products are not tested on animals; every product is vegetarian with about 85 per cent being vegan. About 40 per cent is free of preservatives, and over a third are unpackaged. While walking through the store, you can see that they consider diversity when hiring too. A good number of the staff were part of the LGBTQ community, and were proud to show it. It does not matter who you are, the products are for everyone: anyone can try out the make-up or other products in the store and the staff will help if needed. Lush is proud to decorate their
windows for Pride and even advertise on social media with same-gender couples in bathtubs. Their models span a wide spectrum of body types; plus sized men and women are shown using their products. Their location in West Edmonton Mall had opened with the new look and concept prior to the Chinook location in Calgary. There are about 250 Lush Cosmetics locations across North America so, even if you are not able to visit these new concept stores, it is worth checking out their products. There is something there for everyone to use and enjoy.

The Hillywood Show at the Calgary Expo photos by the Hillywood Show
by Evan Kayne The Hillywood Show, created by sisters, super-fans, and comedy duo Hilly & Hannah Hindi have been churning out song and dance parodies of Harry Potter, Sherlock, Doctor Who, and Supernatural for quite some time now. They must be doing something right, because they have over a million subscribers on their YouTube channel, their parodies have been recognized, approved, and even featured some performers from the shows they’ve parodied. We caught up with them this Spring when they were in town for Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo and asked them from where did the inspiration from their parodies arise. “We’ve been always super creative. When we were little we’d always dress up, we’d always be in costume for events, we danced all our life, and then we’d start making movies” said Hilly. Back in their youth, friends wouldn’t come over to play, they’d come over to act or help in any home movies they were making. They just continued to hold on to the passion for film making, and then YouTube came along to provide a platform for a wider audience. We noted how well the sisters do drag in their performances, which is especially inspiring considering how large the drag community is in Calgary, what with Fake Moustache and the Imperial Sovereign Court of the Chinook Arch. We wondered if gender bending was something they did as kids and what kind of reaction the adults gave them. Their Dad was supportive, as Hannah told us: “This was a church competition and they’re www.gaycalgary.com
‘Dress as a Biblical character’ and my Dad fricking dressed me as Samson.” Hilly was dressed as the Prodigal Son, so this was obviously something their family bought into and enjoyed. The cross-dressing was more of a challenge as Hilly saw it. They both do great work dressing up in female roles (as evidenced by Hilly’s costume and performance of Harley Quinn), but some of their male roles forced them to up their game, as she told us. “I liked being someone completely different. And that’s what makes the Hillywood show so fun for us...we don’t have to play the same personality.” They can play a diverse role of characters, which means sometimes they must learn how to walk and talk like a guy. What makes it funny is that they’re both quite petite. So, in some cases they’re mini-versions of characters from shows like Supernatural. “You should see me as Dean...I’m this pocketsized Dean Winchester...you can take me home!” And recently thanks to their own growing fame, the two sisters have filmed productions where the actors from the show they parody have shown up. “We don’t do it to impress them. That’s not our goal. Our goal is to make it for fans and for
GayCalgary Magazine #161, June/July 2017
41
them to go crazy over it.” When the cast of the show follows or recognizes them, that’s just an extra bonus; and if they want
to act in the video parodying their show (as was the case in Supernatural) that’s the cherry on top of the sundae. As to what parody is their favorite, they have a soft spot for the Supernatural video, Hanna said. “That was a huge blessing. We don’t know if that would ever happen again for the Hillywood Show.” It was fun, as was the Sherlock parody as they got to shoot at the actual location, but “...I think the one we like that turned out better than we envisioned is Suicide Squad parody. It really turned out beautifully for us.” This was the parody set to the Lady Gaga song “Judas” (on the video it’s changed to “Joker” from Judas). “I love her” said Hilly. “(Lady Gaga) supports the Hillywood Show, she met us backstage and wanted to talk to us.” They grew to appreciate her on another level, so of course they wanted to do a Gaga parody on one of their productions. That it turned out so well and gotten such positive feedback tells us in the future we may continue to see the two sisters in many more videos.

Drag Race All Stars Katya Zamolodchikova Loves Your Hair
Yekaterina Petrovna Zamolodchikova on keeping spoilers at bay while continuing to perform awesome drag shows photo by Sean M Johnson
By Achiru
GC: This is Jason with Gay Calgary and I’m here with Katya from RuPaul’s Drag Race season one thousand, one hundred and seventy-two? Katya: one thousand, one hundred and seventy-three. GC: Okay. … But the fact it’s at eight seasons and we’re about to have our second All Stars so what does it mean to you to see this grow so much? Katya: Well it’s like you go to the family reunion and you see Drunk on Debbie for the 50th time and you think “How the hell is she still alive?” I’m glad it’s going into its 25th season. But at a point you start to wonder about the mortality of the show. What is its staying power? Are we all gonna die? How painful is it going to be? All these questions swirl in my mind at least 2-3 times a day; often more. But I’m happy to see it—I cannot wait—it feels like forever! We filmed All Stars last year—a full year. That’s a longer waiting period than a normal season so I don’t even remember what happened!!! GC: I know RuPaul will remove a hand if you say much. Is there anything you can tell us about All Stars season 2?
Katya: Just to be clear she’ll remove much more than just a hand. You will be de-armed and de-legged. That’s in the NDA contract. What can I tell you? Other than “It’s gonna be fierce!” … God, the threat of litigation is very real. I know so much but they don’t let me say one damn thing. I’ll give you a hint. I will have a major fashion breakthrough and/or a major fashion disaster! GC: So, since you’ve gone through it once with the original season, going back to it, how is it different? Katya: That I can talk about! I was much less nervous and I was determined to play any cards I could for whatever reason I hadn’t played in the previous time because life doesn’t give you second chances very often, Deb, you gotta take advantage before you’re dead! Splat on the floor! So know what? I’ve done this before; I know RuPaul actually likes me and doesn’t want to kill me or at least she’s a very good actress, so either way it’s a win for me or for her, so I was like you know what? I should be able to do this. Some of the girls, “did [their] best,” and that’s tough because if you had a good edit and had a favorable reception then you risk having an unfavorable one but that’s the chance you take when you go on the show. The benefits far outweigh the risks, I think. You get to show the world your stupid drag! That’s awesome! GC: So, 10 queens, probably like an 8-week season; we’re going into October so almost a year and a half … If someone wants to hear from the recording of the original season... How hard was it for you, with that possibility of losing a hand, to keep your mouth shut for that long?

Stage persona of American drag queen and actor from Boston, Massachusetts, Brian Joseph McCook wants to keep all limbs intact to continue performing. Yekaterina Petrovna Zamolodchikova, or just Katya for short, does her best to tell us about her performance while not really saying anything that might result in heavy crippling blood loss on her end.

Katya: Oh it’s really really hard. So I immediately…. It’s unrealistic too. So this is what you do. This is what I did—what every drag race girl does but doesn’t say. You immediately go home and you tell three people. I mean you just HAVE TO.

GayCalgary Magazine #161, June/July 2017
You have to get it out of your system and then you have to kill them so I spent a month trying to kill them very discreetly— painlessly—you have to get all the drugs from Mexico, there are a lot of hoops to jump through… But yeah so you get it out and put them to rest and then you can move on! GC: Then you eat them, right? Did you mention before you’re going to be talking about the cannibalism? Katya: No, I’m not a monster. GC: Of course. This is happening less in a week after a pretty big happening in the LGBT community so tonight and during the tour a whole bunch of LGBTQ people have been gathering every night and it’s gotta weigh on your mind and certainly it’s on mine and on the audiences’, but we’re also here to have a good time and enjoy ourselves and enjoy the battle of the season so what does it mean to you to be able to come out and entertain for people who still in the back of their mind may still be thinking about the tragedy in Orlando? Katya: Well I mean for me, honestly, it’s actually easy because I can’t think of anything better to be doing. There was an attack in a queer space on a Saturday night where people were either trying to have fun, trying to get laid, trying to party, trying to watch a drag show, any of those or all of those, and I don’t believe it was a declaration of war so there’s no need to feel unsafe, so more than ever it’s good to just do exactly what we set out to do which is do an awesome drag show for queer people and allies, or whoever really. People are affected in different ways. Ginger is from fucking Orlando. That is her community and she knows so many of the people who died. So we’ve been talking about how the grieving process differs. For me it’s not grief; it’s shock. It’s processing feelings of “here’s www.gaycalgary.com
another vivid example of how the world is fucked!” But I’m not grieving because I don’t know anyone [personally]… So yeah I think we’re doing the best thing we can do. I wish the ticket prices weren’t so high though. Sorry David. GC: If hypothetically you were to have won a Drag Race All Stars— Katya: Let me stop you there because you know in the show they don’t do that anymore. It’s open-ended when filming ends. GC: Is this true for All Stars too? Katya: Absolutely! Yeah! I think to say the determination of the winner is an open-ended book with no pages is pretty fair and they won’t sue me. GC: Yeah, I guess a lot has changed since the first one. Katya: The All Stars one came after season 4. GC: Yes. Katya: But they did choose a winner right then and there. GC: I believe they did. Absolutely yeah. Katya: How did that not get leaked? GC: Magic! Katya: Serious magic! People love to chit chat and you know… Jibber-jabber. GC: So, is it a live finale? Katya: I don’t believe so. I’m advocating for a housewifestyle reunion show where there’s no audience, just claws out, paws out and any other aw sounds you want to think about. GC: So, in October you’ll be finding out the same time we do, who won All Stars?
Katya: I will and no matter who wins, I’m sure that she deserves it! Oh and last thing! My favourite pageant thing— apparently this is what you say ironically and sarcastically to someone you don’t like is— “Love your hair, hope you win!” That’s the BEST! GC: Ha ha! Katya: *laughs* That’s the best mean girls pageant thing. I love that. GC: Thank you so much for taking a few minutes to talk to us tonight. Katya: It was my pleasure and I would do it again but maybe for a little money next time? *giggle* Thank you! GC: Thank you!

Daddy’s Back With “Loose Wrists” and Lacey Shorts Cazwell’s Making America Femme Again!
Still from Loose Wrists music video
By Tom Corliss “It’s about time we all embrace femme,” proclaims rapper Cazwell. “Whether we are gay or straight, when men get in touch with their feminine sides, it gives a real sense of empowerment.” Often described as ‘what would have happened if Eminem had grown up on Madonna’s front lawn,’ Cazwell’s hip hop videos — including classics like Ice Cream Truck, I Seen Beyoncé At Burger King, and Rice & Beans — have been viewed over 10 million times on YouTube. His latest track, Loose Wrists, the first single off his new Snow Cone music label, is old-school hip-hop with a beat that is purposely simple and bass driven and lyrics that tackle the new age we live in: Trump’s America. “We have a President that wants to take us off of the census and a Vice President that believes shock therapy will cure gayness,” Cazwell continues. “At the end of last year, I vowed to be as gay as possible with my music and videos. We have to be more visible than ever and I hope I inspire that.” That’s why Cazwell will be wearing the pastel colored Lacey shorts featured in the Loose Wrists music video out in public this summer. “Hell yeah, I’m going to wear them! You’ll find me at the corner deli at four in the morning wearing my pair with a matching speedo underneath.” The Lacey shorts stirred a social media frenzy online last month when Cazwell first posted a photo with him and his male dancers wearing them on Instagram. The same photo soon appeared on PopSugar, Huffington Post, Teen Vogue, Maxim and Allure and now the shorts are the summer’s hottest craze. Even straight men and their girlfriends have reached out to the Hologram City designer who created them to purchase a pair of Lacey shorts for their very own. Cazwell’s not surprised. “I could see Pharrell sporting lace on The Voice,” he says. 48
GayCalgary Magazine #161, June/July 2017
He was more astounded by the initial shock the shorts caused as they are much more conservative than the shirtless guys in Speedo’s and jockstraps he typically has in his videos. But all publicity is good publicity. The uproar has led to the music video being viewed over 200 thousand times already. The irony is that the Lacey shorts were initially intended to be jogging suits. “I wanted five pastel velour jogging suits for the video but we couldn’t get them to look the way we wanted. I was really stressed out about it so I took a nap and when I woke up, I called Hoza (the designer) up and said, ‘Lace. Let’s just use lace and have the guys in white briefs.’” It turns out lace is much easier to work with than velour and Hoza was able to whip up the outfits quickly. Lacey Shorts are not Cazwell’s first foray in fashion. Last year he debuted his Ice Cream Truck underwear with design collaborator Geoffrey Mac. The collection sold out entirely in its first month.
