In 2013 stond Finse zangeres Krista Siegfrids met haar nummer Marry Me in de finale van het Eurovisiesongfestival. Dit leidde Krista uiteindelijk naar het supersterdom dat ze nu in haar thuisland heeft bereikt. Met haar Nederlandse vriend Rutger en dochtertje is Krista in Amsterdam gesetteld. Hoewel Krista’s Eurovisiedebuut inmiddels acht jaar geleden plaatsvond, is haar fascinatie voor het muziekspektakel nog altijd aanwezig. Zo was Krista vorig jaar te zien in de OUTtv-miniserie: Krista’s Road to Eurovision! In meerdere afleveringen onderzocht ze de diverse invalshoeken van het Songfestival die het evenement zo bijzonder maken.
Dag Krista! Hoe gaat het met je?
Het gaat goed! Ik kom net terug uit Finland voor ‘The Masked Singer’ waar ik tweede ben geworden. Het was hard werken maar zo leuk!
Hoe kwam je bij het Eurovisiesongfestival in 2013?
In Finland kan iedereen zichzelf opgeven en een nummer inzenden voor de nationale competitie. Met Marry Me werd ik uitgekozen om mee te doen aan het programma. Toen de Finnen op me stemden, mocht ik naar Zweden voor het Eurovisie. Finland vertegenwoordigen was altijd mijn droom. Mijn moeder heeft nog een schoolboekje van toen ik twaalf was. Hierin zweerde ik dat ik ooit mee zou doen aan het Songfestival. Het is geweldig dat het daadwerkelijk gebeurd is.
Hoe heeft die deelname je veranderd?
Vóór mijn deelname was ik vrijwel onbekend. Hierna stond heel Finland op zijn kop van Marry Me. Sindsdien ben ik zo druk geweest; muziek maken, optreden in Finland en de rest van Europa. Ik heb veel televisie gedaan. Het Eurovisiesongfestival was mijn grote droom, maar uiteindelijk pas het begin.
Tijdens ESF 2013 zoende je een achtergrondzangeres, wat voor betekenis had dat?
Destijds was er veel discussie in Finland over het mogelijk openstellen van het huwelijk.
Interview Krista Siegfrids: From Eurovision to OUTtv
In 2013, Finnish singer Krista Siegfrids was in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest with her song Marry Me. This eventually led Krista to the superstardom she has now achieved in her home country. Krista has settled in Amsterdam with her Dutch boyfriend Rutger and daughter. Although Krista’s Eurovision debut took place eight years ago, her fascination for the musical spectacle is still present. Last year, Krista was featured in the OUTtv miniseries: Krista’s Road to Eurovision! In several episodes she examined the various angles of the Song Contest that make the event so special.
Hi Krista! How are you?
It goes well! I just came back from Finland for ‘The Masked Singer’ where I came second. It was hard work but so much fun! Song Contest in 2013?
In Finland, anyone can sign up and submit a song for the national competition. With Marry Me, I was chosen to participate in the program. When the Finns voted for me, I was allowed to go to Sweden for the Eurovision. Representing Finland has always been my dream. My mother still has a school book from when I was twelve. in the Eurovision Song Contest. It’s great that it actually happened.
How has that participation changed you?
Before my participation, I was virtually unknown. After this, all of Finland was turned upside down by Marry Me. Since then I’ve been so busy; making music, performing in Finland and the rest of Europe. I’ve done a lot of television. The Eurovision Song Contest was my big dream, but ultimately only the beginning.
During ESF 2013, you kissed a backing singer, what was the meaning of that?
With Marry Me we saw the opportunity to show what we thought. We wanted to do this in a positive and festive way. I think it had a big impact both in Finland and the rest of Europe. I was inundated with responses. Many were outraged that a lesbian kiss was shown on live television and in their living room. I got hate, but also love. I mainly received letters from Ukraine and Russia. These writers sat in the closet and told me about how grateful they were. Similar content was blocked. Visibility is very important to these people.
What does the LGBT+ community mean to you?
Europa. Ik werd overspoeld met reacties. Velen waren woedend dat een lesbische kus op live televisie en in hun woonkamer te zien was. Ik kreeg haat, maar ook liefde. Ik kreeg voornamelijk brieven uit Oekraïne en Rusland. Deze schrijvers zaten in de kast en vertelden me over hoe dankbaar ze waren. Vergelijkbare content werd geblokkeerd. Zichtbaarheid is hartstikke belangrijk voor deze mensen.
Wat betekent de LGBT+-community voor jou?
Veel van mijn vrienden zijn homo. Ik steun en houd van ze. Liefde is voor iedereen. Het was zo leuk dat toen de kus plaatsvond, dat de LGBT+-gemeenschap me opnam en waardeerde. Ik werd overal geboekt en ben nog steeds heel close met ze. Ik voel zoveel liefde van de regenbooggemeenschap. Als je optreedt bij Amsterdam Pride voel je geen veroordeling, alleen maar plezier. Het is altijd gezellig. Ik houd van dit publiek en deze gemeenschap.
In Finland ben je een superster, je zit in de jury van grote tv-shows, deed mee met The Masked Singer etc. hoe voelt dat?
Na het Eurovisiesongfestival in 2013 werd het crazy. Fans wachtten me op tot ik naar buiten kwam voor een handtekening en een foto. Ik werd overal herkend en dat was best schokkend in het begin. Nu ben ik al zo lang in de industrie dat ik er gewend aan ben geraakt. Ik heb zoveel televisie gedaan in Finland dat het niet meer dan normaal is. Ik heb gejureerd in ‘The Voice Kids’ en ben al jaren gastvrouw van de nationale selectie voor het Eurovisiesongfestival. Ik voel me heerlijk bij televisie en heb het idee dat mijn persoonlijkheid zo beter doorkomt dan bij
Conchita Unstoppable muziek. Het combineren van werk en privé gaat so far so good. Rutger en ik doen ons best en zijn elkaars grote steun. We geven elkaar de ruimte om te doen waar we gelukkig van worden.

When you perform at Amsterdam Pride you don’t feel condemnation, just fun. It is always cozy. I love this audience and this community. sit on the jury of big TV shows, participated in The Masked Singer etc. how does that feel?
After the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, it got crazy. Fans were waiting for me to come out for an autograph and a photo. I was recognized everywhere and that was quite shocking in the beginning. Now I’ve been in the industry for so long that I’ve gotten used to it. I’ve done so much television in Finland that it’s only normal. I have judged in ‘The Voice Kids’ and have been hostess of the national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest for years. I feel great with television and have the idea that my personality comes through better than with music. Combining work and private life goes so far so well. Rutger and I do our best and are each other’s great support. We give each other space to do what makes us happy.
How much did you know about the Dutch Song Contest history?
Hoeveel wist je over de Nederlandse Songfestival geschiedenis?
Ik wist vrijwel niets over de Nederlandse geschiedenis van het festival. Hier ben ik ingedoken. Natuurlijk kende ik Ding-a-Dong en een aantal andere bekende nummers. In de show praat ik over luchtige onderwerpen zoals de mode, maar ook politieke statements tijdens het festival. Ik ontmoette vorig jaar al Nederlandse artiesten en Eurovisie legendes. Getty Kaspers bijvoorbeeld, dat was een enorme eer. Ik leerde Mark Harbers (VVD), de huidige minister van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat kennen, hij is net een soort Google als het gaat om Eurovisie!
