SATURDAY,
FELLOW CATTLEMEN
As I sit to write this just weeks following the passing of our beloved father and grandfather, Richard Biella, we are filled with a mix of emotions. For those who knew him intimately, they understood his profound passion for people, his deep-seated love for Angus cattle, and his unwavering dedication to raising cattle in the rugged beautiful mountains. Richard cherished every moment spent acquainting himself with each visitor who graced the ranch, whether they came to admire or acquire Lazy JB cattle. His absence leaves a void that cannot be easily filled, yet we find solace in the enduring legacy he has left behind.
It is with heartfelt determination that we pledge to carry forward Richard’s vision and honor his memory as we proudly carry the Lazy JB brand into the future. Indeed, this juncture finds us amidst an exhilarating period within the cattle industry! Finally, after weathering fluctuations of the market, we are witnessing a resurgence-, one that promises to bestow longawaited rewards for those who have remained steadfast throughout the challenges of the cattle business. Fall 2023 served as a beacon of hope, proving that the world needs ranchers and that the demand for beef and high-quality protein remains strong. As feeder cattle prices soar to unprecedented heights, we stand at a pivotal crossroads. It is a moment ripe with opportunity whereas ranchers we can look at trading in our old herd bulls for fresh, innovative genetics that hold the promise of adding even more pounds to your calves at weaning time.
Although the industry in constantly changing and chasing different trends one thing remains true here at Lazy JB, and that is that we believe balance is key in building a profitable cattle operation. There is no substitute for fertility, health and vigor. And when you add structural soundness, performance and fleshing ability, you are guaranteed a sound investment. The Lazy JB brand is known for putting real muscle in these cattle and we proudly offer several generations of power and balance! This year’s sale offers new sire groups and cattle with generations of High Altitude PAP data. Not only are all the bulls and females in this offering PAP tested, but they spend 6 months out of the year grazing at 9,500 feet, are tested at 6,500 feet elevation and are backed by generations of dams and granddams that have all been PAP tested.
We are committed to raising high altitude genetics and have taken that commitment a step further as we have teamed up with Dr. Tim Holt and CSU as well as Simplot to conduct research tracking PAP data all the way to the rail. We have incorporated Simplots new BCHF (heart failure) test as well as the actual PAP scores from Dr. Holt to better assure you that these cattle are fit for high altitude and success in the feedyards. We believe this new data & our commitment to navigating heart failure even in the feedlot sector will be influential in providing higher demand for our customer’s cattle in the very near future.
The optimism that the year ahead offers should excite all of us. As we look ahead, we can’t help but notice that with the number of cattle that unfortunately had to disperse within the last 3 years, the demand for heifers and bred females in the years to come will allow for even greater profitability for those that have been able to withstand the hardships of the previous years. The decrease in number of calves being born in the U.S. in 2024 will increase the demand for your calves in the fall and months to come. Fall of 2023 & the beginning months of 2024 opened the gate with promising markets on feeder cattle and the grit of our industry continues to shine through as each rancher prepares for another year of calving.
The bulls are ready for your inspection anytime you are in the area. Videos are available for viewing on our website www. lazyjbangus.com or on our new online auction platform DV Auctions. We would love to help guide you through the offering and assist you in finding the right bull for the right budget. As we navigate the intricacies of an ever-changing market landscape, let us draw inspiration from the spirit of Richard- a man whose unwavering commitment to excellence serves as guiding light in our collective journey. With God as our guide, let us forge ahead with courage and conviction, enduring legacy we have inherited and the boundless possibilities that the beef industry has to offer.
To all of our customers, new and old, we sincerely appreciate your trust in our brand, your friendship and your business and look forward to seeing you on our March 23rd at the ranch! We invite you to call us if you have questions and hope you’ll take the time to come see our offering for yourself.
The Creamers
JEFF, KATHI, BRANDON AND BRITNEY CREAMERThis business is saturated with great people. People that represent multi-generational farming and ranching operations; the weekend warriors that have agricultural backgrounds with town jobs, to the entrepreneurs and business owners that decide to invest in the business because the industry interests them. We are here to tell you that if you find yourself reading this letter, you are engaged with some of the best that the purebred seedstock business has to offer. The Creamer family has deep roots within agriculture and all have chosen pathways to continue furthering the quality of the beef business, an endeavor that is fueled by both tradition and passion. You can trust that an investment in Lazy JB genetics places you at the forefront of their years of meticulous selection, endeavoring toils and dedication to success.
The selection criteria employed by Lazy JB Angus has been developed with a focused and intense goal in place. If you ever take hold of the opportunity to tour the cowherd, it will quickly become evident that superior phenotype blended with cow families of significance is what is driving this program in the right direction. While a visual tour of the cowherd will impress, it’s the genetic and genomic power that is being built on the other side of the hide that is perhaps what is positioning the program at the forefront of the breed. In an effort to bridge the gap between Angus stock that excel from a performance and commercial profitability standpoint and those that garner attention from those that appreciate added maternal and phenotypic value, the quest has been taken very seriously in Montrose. The last thought to be made when it comes to breeding decisions made by the Creamer family pertain to showring acceptance, yet through a consistent search for cattle that upstand to their rigorous phenotype specifications, they have unconsciously developed a cowherd that seeks merit from stockmen nationwide, both in and out of the showring. When it comes to discussing geographical acceptance, this is where you will find the most significant selection pressures at Lazy JB Angus.
The dedication to supplying customers with the most up to date information, research and results when it comes to PAP testing is taken seriously. Every effort is made when it comes to supplying their customers with the most accurate and reliable PAP testing possible. When it comes to bull selection and mating decisions, the first criteria to be checked off before any further thought is made pertains to the suitability for regional environmental stresses. You can trust that Lazy JB Angus continues to be a leader in the business when it comes to supplying their customers with a source of cattle that are backed with reliable, science driven PAP testing and selection.
The offering has been bred and managed with the success of the buyer in mind, and behind each animal stands a family owned and managed ranch that want to be your first call if problems were to arise. There is a desire for everyone that invests in the Lazy JB program to reap the rewards and add profitability to their end product, regardless of whether their marketing plan seeks a value by the pound or by the head. We are proud to join the marketing team of this first-class operation, and truly find privilege in being able to represent such a fine offering of mountain raised, purebred Angus genetics. We look forward to hosting you alongside the Creamer family, March 23th in Montrose, Colorado.

FACTS ABOUT PAP
When running cattle at 6,000 feet or above they are more at risk for “Brisket” or “High Altitude” Disease. At Lazy JB Angus we have been PAP testing for over 30 years. Our bulls are tested at 6,500 feet and are summered for six months in rugged high country of Colorado at altitudes ranging from 7,500 to 9,500 feet. All PAP tests have been done by Dr. Tim Holt from CSU. Dr. Holt has been the leading vet in PAP testing and pulmonary research for decades.
WHAT IS A PAP SCORE AND WHAT DOES IT MEASURE
Pulmonary Arterial Pressure (PAP) testing is used as a predictor of the susceptibility to brisket disease. A PAP test helps determine which animals are most at risk for carrying and passing the disease to their offspring.
Age and elevation at the time the test is taken is important. It is also important, to ensure accuracy, that they are tested above 6,000 feet and have been at that altitude for a minimum of 3-6 weeks prior to the test.
HOW TO READ A PAP SCORE
• 44 AND BELOW LOW RISK
• 45-49 MODERATE RISK
• 50-ABOVE HIGH RISK
Lazy JB is confident that spring bulls that have a PAP score 44 and below are good candidates for use at elevation, however, the purchase and use of any bull solely based upon his PAP score DOES NOT guarantee that the bull or his progeny will not be affected by HMD.
UNDERSTANDING BW
There is a huge misconception when it comes to selecting bulls based on calving ease and birth weight. Yes, the lowest birth weight bulls will yield you small calves but what do you give up in weight at weaning, your one pay day a year?
It’s more than just the bull you need to be evaluating when making your selection sale day. Research shows the following factors affect the weight of the calf:
1. The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65%
2. The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf
3. The bull has 30-40% influence on birth weight of his progeny
4. Pelvic measurements and angle, as well as the shape of the calf, have 35-40% influence on calving ease.
5. Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the last days of gestation.
6. Weather and temperature the last 30 days affect the length of gestation.
7. Size and maturity of the cow influence calving ese.
As a rule of thumb, it takes a calf weighing 85lb at birth to finish at 1,200-1,250lb. A cow should easily give birth to a calf weighing 8% of her own body weight. Thus, a 1,200 lb. cow should give birth to a 96 lb. calf with ease.
HOW TO READ AND SELECT FOR BW EPDS?
Rather than searching for the lowest birth EPD in the sale, you should compare the birth EPDs using the equation demonstrated below. Don’t forget to take into account the average weight and frame of your cow herd. ALSO, WE DON’T RECOMMEND SINGLE TRAIT SELECTION, IT CAN COST YOU PERFORMANCE AND MONEY.
Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. EXAMPLE
There is a 4.0-pound difference between Bull A and Bull B. Therefore, Bull A would be expected to sire calves that average 4.0 pounds heavier at birth when you mate them to a comparable set of cows. Note, EPDs do not predict what the actual birth weight of the calves will be.
