Situated on North Deeside Road near the suburb of Milltimber, the sports and wellness club boasts a whole range of indoor and outdoor activities for all ages to enjoy.

One person who regularly spends her time at the premises is Kippie Lodge client Aimee Smith.

The mum-of-three, who works as a sales and marketing manager in real estate, has been a member of the multi-purpose leisure facility for a couple of years.

And now, she says she treats the leisure centre like her second home.

We caught up with Aimee to find out what makes Kippie Lodge’s services and amenities so attractive to her and her family.

“The atmosphere in Kippie Lodge is really friendly and everyone knows me by my name now,” said Aimee.

“I treat the centre almost like my second home.

“I have hosted my birthday parties there and I often have meetings with my clients in their cafe, too.

“The cafe is kind of like my second living room and I treat the outdoor area as if it was my own garden.

“In summer my family and I use the outdoor play area all the time.”

Boasting a variety of social activities, Aimee also loves taking part in group and family events.

She said: “We went to the Easter egg hunt and my kids also loved the bouncy castle in summer.”

Offering a wide range of fitness classes for its members of all abilities, Aimee goes out of her way to use the facilities five days a week.

She added: “I really like their gym circuit, boot camp, HIIT (high-intensity interval training) and I also do TRX (total resistance exercise) suspension training. But there are many more classes to choose from.”

Kippie Lodge also has classes including barre, which incorporates some movements derived from ballet, pilates, yoga, zumba, aqua circuits and many other fitness classes for its 3,500 members to try out.

The centre’s nine-hole golf course, which is located in a woodland area on-site surrounded by trees, is also very popular, especially with Aimee’s husband Mark who uses the facilites.

But it’s not just her other half who reaps the benefits of Kippie Lodge, but their children too.

She said: “My husband uses the golf course facilities

and my boys – Charlie and Freddie – go to tennis classes and ‘learn to swim’ lessons.

“My son Hugo is too young for normal swimming lessons so he goes to private ones.

“I like to use the swimming pool and sauna, too.

“And during the weekend we go swimming during ‘splash time’ as a family because that’s when my kids don’t have to be quiet and use lanes, but instead they can use floats and have fun.”

Kippie Lodge also has a small physiotherapy team, which helps their members treat sports injuries, muscle and ligament strains and joint problems.

They also offer electrotherapy, acupuncture, soft tissue mobilisation, pilates and postural advice.

Aimee said: “I don’t use their physiotherapist service on a regular basis but I was happy with the service I received in the past.

“What I use more often are their beauty facilities.

“My kids have their hair cut there and I often go for manicures and pedicures.

“I buy my shampoo and hair brushes from their beauty salon as well.”

Kippie Lodge’s hair and beauty salon, which has been operating for more than two decades, offers an array of luxury treatments including facials, massages, waxing, and nail and eyelash treatments for both members and non-members in a relaxed and friendly environment.

After exercising and getting pampered, Aimee also likes to treat herself and her family to a tasty meal.

She said: “We go to the restaurant twice a week for our tea.

“Kippie Lodge’s Crathes Restaurant & Bar offer a tasty carvery on Sundays and their burgers and vegetable dishes are really nice, too.

“I also often get their home-made protein bowls which are my go-to after a gym class.”

Using only the best locally-sourced ingredients, the eatery offers a range of healthy sandwiches, toasties, salads, light bites as well as main dishes.

The centre’s conservatory provides an attractive family dining experience, with indoor and outdoor play areas.

Robin Caldwell, club director at Kippie Lodge, also thinks 2020 will be another exciting year for the leisure centre.

Hypnotherapy and Addictions Addiction is a growing problem, with as many as 1 in 3 people battling some type of addiction.

Hypnotherapy for addictions can be highly effective. Because hypnosis allows access to the unconscious mind, it can be very successful in changing behaviours in the longer term.

Thoughts and habits linked to addictions can be tackled, along with helping to manage the stress of recovering from addiction.

Drugs, alcohol, and smoking may be the first things to spring to mind when you think of addiction but it can also include activities such as gambling, shopping, using the Internet, and sex.

I’ve previously worked as a former Specialist Nurse in addictions and substance misuse and I use this experience to help clients come out the other side.

Any activity or behaviour can potentially become addictive if it’s done to the extent that it is harmful or destructive. Some substances and activities can bring a “high” — often because of increased dopamine production that triggers feelings of pleasure and satisfaction. Once this is experienced, the brain wants more, but over time, the benchmark for this pleasure is raised.

Because you need to do more to get the same effect, addiction becomes much more likely.

How do I get an electric car charging point installed at home?

With the increase in electric car popularity, more people are going to need to charge at home. But how do you go about it?

There’s little way to avoid the wave of popularity that electric cars are experiencing at the moment.

Close to every manufacturer is bringing their own EV to market, and demand is only going to increase as both carmakers and government push to get more people into plug-in cars.

It means that more and more people are going to need to charge their cars at home – but how do you do it? Yes, a three-pin plug can be used to charge up an EV, but it’s slow – a wall box can make the process a lot quicker. Let’s take a look at how you do it.

Why do I need a wallbox charger?

It may seem that just plugging an electric car into your home via a three-point plug, but it’s far

slower – as we’ve mentioned – and not quite as safe as a wallbox, either. A wallbox is capable of delivering a faster rate of charge and, because they tend to be weatherproof, they’re far safer overall.

Many have built-in safety features to ensure that should an error occur, and it won’t overload your house’s electricity supply, too.

How much is it going to cost me?

Fortunately, there’s a grant to help with the costs of installing a charging point at home. As such, it’ll cost from £279 to install a wallbox into your home, inclusive of the government grant. This also covers the installation by a qualified fitter, so there shouldn’t be any additional costs to you after everything’s plugged in – other than the electricity itself, of course.

There could be extra costs associated with the installation if you’re trying to get a wallbox placed in a particularly tricky place, or if more wiring than usual is required to complete it.

How much will it cost to charge my car?

How much you’ll pay in order to charge your car will depend on the size of the car’s batteries, how much charge you’ve got left in it and the rate you pay for electricity. However, as a guide, the typical rate for electricity is 14p per kWh, or 8p per kWh for overnight, economy charging.

For an average electric car, with a 60kWh battery and around 200 miles worth of range, it’ll cost around £8.40 to charge fully. Charge something larger, like a Tesla Model S, will cost around £14 – but, remember, that the Tesla offers a much greater range at around 300 miles.

How long will it take to charge my electric car?

Charging time is an area where having a wallbox really helps out. Having one fitted gives you a charging rate of between 3.7kW and 7kW, which equates to around 15-30 miles of charge added per hour. It’s still not quick, we’ll admit – but it’s better than a three-pin charger, which can only deliver 2.3kW of power, or around eight miles of range per hour.

Where will a wallbox be installed?

When a wallbox is installed, it’ll be placed on an external wall either on the side of your house, or on the side of a garage. Connected to the mains electricity by a secure connection, it’ll be ideally located close to where you park in order to keep things easy.

This will only really work for people with off-street parking though — as you’re not allowed to run cables across the pavement to a car parked on the street.

How long will installation take?

It should only take around three hours for a wallbox to be installed at your home, depending on access and how tricky an area it is to fit.

Where can I buy a wallbox from?

Happily enough, there are plenty of suppliers of electric car charging points. A quick internet search should pull up a multitude of providers local to you. Just a quick note – if you want to take advantage of the government’s grant, then you may have to prove ownership of the car and your home in order to qualify.

Consider coloured varieties such as ‘Purple Haze’ or ‘Purple Dragon’ to ring the changes.

Sow some salad leaves and within a few weeks they’ll be growing strongly enough to harvest. Small sowings made every two weeks or so will give supply of salad throughout the summer and well into autumn.

Grow tomatoes in a warm, sunny spot in your garden, or better still in a greenhouse or frame. It’s often better value (and a lot easier) to buy some small garden-ready plants. Greenhouse and outdoor varieties are available so check catalogues or labels to make sure you choose correctly.

Cucumbers are best grown from plants, and in the garden ‘ridge’ cucumbers are best as they perform better outside.

Choose garden-ready mail order plants so you can plant them out straight away, or only have to grow them on in pots for a couple of weeks. Unwrap as soon as they arrive and if you can’t plant them immediately, water the compost if necessary and pot each root ball into some compost.

At this time of year the soil is often really wet, so try covering it with a polythene sheet or a polythene covered pull-out tunnel for a couple of weeks before your plants are due to arrive or you are due to plant out vegetables sown from seed, removing it just before planting out. This keeps off excessive rain and allows the soil to warm up a little beforehand.

Small plants may still be tender, so make sure frosts are past before planting out and

give them a chance to gradually acclimatise to their new surroundings by covering them with cloches or fleece for a few days.

Cheats’ Apple Strudel

A classic strudel with home-made pastry can take a long time to make, but using a convenient pack of ready- rolled pastry means you can have a delicious fruity pudding on the table in less than an hour!

Ready in 55 minutes | Serves 6

Ingredients

2 large dessert apples, peeled, cored and chopped 50g raisins or sultanas 1 tbsp cornflour

50g caster sugar

2 tsp ground mixed spice 320g pack ready-rolled shortcrust or puff pastry Beaten egg, to glaze Icing sugar, to dust

Whipped cream, custard and fresh berries, to serve

Preheat the oven to 200C / 180C fan / gas mark 6.

Line a baking sheet with baking paper.

Place the apples and raisins or sultanas in a bowl. Mix together the cornflour, sugar and spice and add to the apples, tossing to coat.

Unroll the pastry but keep it on the paper. Using a rolling pin, gently roll the pastry a little thinner. With one long side facing you, spoon the apple mixture along the length, leaving a 2cm border at the edges.

Gently roll up the pastry to enclose the filling and fold the pastry in at the ends (see Tip).

Place seam-side down on the baking sheet. Brush all over with beaten egg. Bake for 30-35 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Leave to stand for 10 minutes. Dust with icing sugar and serve sliced with whipped cream, custard and fresh berries.

Pilates for Back Care Some people have back pain while others have no discomfort at all. Which group will benefit more from Pilates for Back Care the most?

Well, both groups, for very different reasons.

Discomfort or not, there is only one thing I am interested in when I speak about back care and that is alignment.

Four years ago I had no issue with my back at all. Then, literally, overnight, I was in hospital.

It started at 10:00pm and by midnight I was screaming, in tears with the pain, and by 2:00am, I had been admitted.

A friend of mine said to me last week she was receiving treatment for shoulder discomfort.

I know she had previously suffered with back discomfort. So I asked her if they were linked.

But they were not, to her knowledge.

Re-alignment will take a MINIMUM of 12 weeks for the body to adapt. You have to establish which muscles are strong for you and which are tight. Some exercises you’ll find really easy, while other exercises will be more challenging, all because of your alignment. Not because the exercises are easy or hard. Everyone is different in their ability to do an exercise. After 12 weeks you will notice your body adapting to perform an exercise because you have focused on your body’s imbalances and corrected them.

Then I asked if she had ever had her posture analysed?

Twelve years ago I had my posture analysed but I carried on as normal. I had received no advice at the time, on how or why I should correct it. This was my mistake as it led to my hospitalisation.

Both my friend and I have issues with lower back and shoulder. We are both women in our 50’s and we have both had children and we are both right handed. Is that co-incidence or a pattern?

So I asked more questions, as I did of myself, over the years too, and found that we both carry ourselves in the same way. We both tilt our pelvis forwards causing a ‘loading’ to go on at the lumbar spine, probably due to pregnancy. We both carried the babies on our left hip, causing the shoulder and hip to lift up, out of alignment. Hence the hip and shoulder discomfort.
