Lamborghini is coming of age in the Kingdom of Bahrain with the introduction of Aventador S and the Huracan Performante and the induction of a new operations director who will oversee operations here. The plan, obviously, to see more young at heart drive this speedster. Another speed ace, Ferrari, announces its insatiable thirst for newer and faster products with the launch of the Portofina, named after a tourist centre in Italy. This follows hot on the heels of the 812 Superfast.

From the speed machines, we look at the fantastic with the Rolls Royce Dawn in Fuxia, proving that the bespoke world knows no limits. Austin Martin with only 15 cars in the Pearl Edition and targeting the Middle East connoisseur is not too far in the distance.

Editor Arrackal Alexander M.

Closer home, we see a war of the SUV clan with Subaru launcing its acclaimed SUV the XV, a car that has gained much fame on the rally front. Into this same market comes the first Jaguar SUV the F Pace, another global award winner, which we test drive for our readers. The Land Rover Velar is not behind in heating up this market. The price war and the facilities spoil the prospective customer for choice.

Graphic Designer & Online Editor Hassan Aldoy Marketing & Sales

On a more sober note, Sonata launched its new version. Volvo through its agency has gone ahead with its second edition of XC 60. GAZ looks at the Gulf Air Aegean Airways codesharing agreement that is to go a long way in bringing Bahrain closer to Greece – two ancient routes to trade and culture. To this we add the profile of Yamaha Waverunner GP1800, a speedster on the waters. The sports pages are filled with action for the autosport lover. Wishing our readers a wonderful spring season.

Welcome the Range Rover Velar

Manama: Land Rover introduced the fourth member of the Range Rover family, the new Velar. Elegant simplicity, a visually reductive approach and pioneering consumer technology mark the new car. Velar models on display will also feature the most exclusive, the First Edition -available worldwide for one model year only. Even more luxurious than the HSE specification, this model is powered solely by the 3.0-litre V6 petrol and diesel engines and features a wealth of extra features as standard, including full extended leather interior trim to complement the perforated Windsor leather seats in Light Oyster or Ebony, 1,600W Meridian Signature Sound System, Matrix-Laser LED headlights and 22-inch split-spoke wheels with diamond-turned finish. Exterior paint colours for the First Edition are Corris Grey, Silicon Silver, and Flux Silver – a unique satin finish exclusive to the First Edition for the first model year only – which will be meticulously handsprayed at Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations’ Oxford Road Technical Centre in the UK. The Range Rover Velar, the manufacturer

14

expects, will fill the white space between its two predecessor models the Evoque and Sport. It offers levels of luxury, refinement and all-terrain capability never before seen in the mid-size SUV segment. Created using Jaguar Land Rover’s lightweight aluminium architecture, the Velar represents the next chapter of the Range Rover success story. The large alloy wheels – in particular the range of 22-inch designs – optimise the vehicle’s stunning silhouette, while further enhancing Velar’s dramatic presence. Advanced technology is pivotal to the contemporary design: the full-LED headlights are the most slender ever to appear on a production Land Rover vehicle. The flush deployable door handles emphasise Velar’s reductive, sculptured form, and contribute to the low drag coefficient of only 0.32. The interior of this new Rover shows elegant simplicity, sophistication and refinement. An unwavering belief in reductionism has been fully employed, with switches being kept to an absolute minimum to help create a calm sanctuary. Design enabling technology has been

engaged fully to create the new Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, the centrepiece of Velar’s interior. The system features two 10-inch high-definition touchscreens integrated seamlessly behind secret-until-lit surfaces. These slim, intuitive displays work in harmony with the cabin architecture while adding an overall sense of modernity congruent with the vehicle’s exterior design. All of this is equalled by the Velar’s practicality: luggage compartment volume is an impressive 673-litres. Unique in the segment, the Velar offers a sustainable, premium textile seat material as an alternative to leather. The Dapple Grey material was developed together with Kvadrat, Europe’s leading manufacturer of high-quality design textiles, and is complemented with Suedecloth inserts in Ebony or Light Oyster. The light, stiff, aluminium-intensive body, together with double-wishbone front- and Integral Link rear suspension provides the perfect basis for agile handling, superior ride comfort and outstanding refinement. It also delivers exceptional levels of crash protection, and the Velar has been developed to

meet the most demanding crash test regulations worldwide. Combined with a comprehensive restraints system that includes six airbags, and a suite of advanced driver assistance systems including, adaptive cruise control with queue assist and an adaptive speed limiter, the Velar integrates the latest safety technology. The new model features a sophisticated all-wheel drive system, four-corner air suspension, class-leading ground clearance of 251mm (213mm with coil springs), class-leading wading depth of 650mm (600mm with coil springs) and Land Rover’s unmatched suite of traction technologies including Terrain Response 2 and All Terrain Progress Control. The Velar – like all Range Rovers – offers world-class all-terrain capability. Exceptional performance and efficiency

comes from the range of six petrol and diesel powertrains, all matched to smooth-shifting ZF eight-speed automatic transmissions and all-wheel drive with Intelligent Driveline Dynamics. Clean, refined four-cylinder Ingenium diesels are offered in 180PS and 240PS variants, noted for their low 142g/km Carbon dioxide emissions and high 500Nm torque output respectively. These engines are joined by the new, highly-advanced four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine which delivers 250PS. Acceleration from 0-100 kilometres per hour (kmph) takes 6.7 seconds (060mph in 6.4 seconds) as well as a more powerful 300PS version which powers Velar from 0-100kmph in just 6.0 seconds (0-60mph in 5.6 seconds). The V6 diesel combines an extraordinary 700Nm of torque for effortless

acceleration and off-road capability with Carbon dioxide emissions of only 167g/km. The 380PS supercharged V6 petrol engine combines exhilarating performance with a unique soundtrack and enables the Velar to reach 100kmph in only 5.7 seconds (060mph in 5.3 seconds) before reaching an electronically-limited top speed of 250kmph (155mph). The Velar and Velar R-Dynamic core range comprises Standard, S, SE and HSE specifications. Customers can also specify Black and Luxury Exterior Packs for an even more distinguished appearance. Designed and engineered at Jaguar Land Rover’s development centres in the UK, Velar will be produced at the company’s Solihull production facility, UK. It goes on sale from Summer 2017 in the UK and Europe and will be sold in over 100 markets worldwide.

Jaguar Project 8 rocks Goodwood

Jaguar XE SV Project 8, four days after the car was officially launched, claimed the Michelin Supercar Paddock Showstopper Trophy, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. As the only four-door car in the Michelin Supercar Run, the car faced formidable competition in the 50-car paddock. However, voters in an online poll hosted by Michelin UK singled out Project 8 as one of the six most popular cars of the weekend. This shortlist of six was judged live on stage by a panel of motoring experts, headed by Michelin Supercar Paddock presenter and former BTCC Champion Tim Harvey. Joining him were British automotive journalist and broadcaster Jon Quirk, American drift racer Vaughn Gittin Jr, Supercars of London channel star Paul Wallace, Seen Thru Glass channel star Sam Fane and Londonbased custom car aficionado Jason Pelosi. Tim Harvey, Chief Judge, said: “Jaguar’s Project 8 really took everyone by surprise at the Festival this weekend. Not only was it the car’s world debut – but the sheer extremes of the car, and the way it’s pushed the boundaries in every single way, made it an absolute standout in the Michelin Supercar Paddock. Congratulations Jaguar.” The car second Collector’s Edition by SVO, following the successful F-TYPE Project 7 of 2014, Project 8 is a roadlegal hand-built four-door sedan with an extraordinary combination of V8 power, dynamic agility and All-Wheel Drive traction. The car exclusively features the most highly tuned version of Jaguar Land

16

Rover’s 5.0-litre Supercharged V8 petrol powertrain. The 600PS power unit, which has a Titanium Variable Active Exhaust, is complemented by Jaguar’s all-wheel drive (AWD) system and motorsport-derived aerodynamics and carbon fibre panels to deliver a 200mph top speed and 0-60mph in 3.3sec* (322km/hr, capable of 0-100km/hr within 3.7 seconds only*) making Project 8 the fastest accelerating Jaguar yet. To ensure exclusivity, no more than 300 examples of Project 8 will be hand-built at SVO’s Technical Centre in Coventry. Building on the award-winning lightweight aluminium Jaguar XE compact sedan, Project 8 features a number of purposeful modifications that are fundamental to the performance of the most track-focused car SVO has ever produced, including height-adjustable

suspension, the first application of Jaguar’s ultimate new Carbon Ceramic Braking system, and an industry-first use of F1-style silicon nitride ceramic wheel bearings on a road car. The high-performance theme continues inside, with subtle applications of Gloss Carbon Fibre trim as well as Alcantara, on the rim of the Project 8 Sport Steering Wheel, instrument binnacle and door cards. The eight-speed Quickshift transmission can either be operated by aluminium paddle shifters behind the steering wheel or by a central Pistolshift lever. Project 8 is available with four seats or an optional two-seat Track Pack. It’s also the first Jaguar to feature a dedicated Track Mode, which tailors driveline and stability control systems for circuit use, and sharpens both throttle and steering responses for ultimate precision and driver feedback.

BX7 is European quality certified

Dubai: The BX7, one of the first new models of the Borgward Group AG to be launched in the GCC, is granted the European Whole Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA) certificate. The SUV was rigorously checked on parameters such as sound levels, emissions, diesel smoke, fuel consumption, engine power, diesel emissions and air conditioning. The EU’s latest WVTA certification is based on the European Economic Commission Regulations and European Union Directives and Regulations. Considered the strictest certification system, WVTA testing is part of a well thought out strategy by Borgward ahead of their expansion plans into the Middle East. Deeply rooted in German technology and craftsmanship, the heritage of Borgward serves as an assurance for BX7’s high quality to meet various strict standards, that is also conducive to the Middle East market. Other prominent features of the utility vehicle includes a powerful turbo engine with low fuel consumption. The 2.0T TGDI (Turbo Gasoline Direct Injection) has been developed jointly by Borgward and top global partners including Bosch, FEV and IHI with an advanced direct injection system and sophisticated

cylinder processing technology. The BX7 has multi-layered safety features, is made by 1500Mpa ultra-high strength steel that meets the Euro NCAP 5-Star Standards, and includes remote monitoring and complete protection. During the certification process, the BX7 also successfully passed the Euro 6 Real Driving Emissions (RDE) test, a mandatory requirement in the E.U. The Euro 6 emission standard, the toughest standard yet, tightens emissions limits

and has been implemented in the EU to eliminate most exhaust pollutants. Middle East drivers will also benefit from several additional safety features later this year in the BX7 including 6 SRS airbags, stability control, electric differential lock, tire pressure monitoring system, fatigue detection and blind spot detection; all of which have been developed using the stringent standards originating from this German brand.

Cayenne under stress before release

Dubai: The third generation Porsche Cayenne has been brought onto the blocks, with a complex and challenging series of examinations. Conducted across the globe and under extreme conditions, these tests ensure that the SUV meets the highest quality requirements set by Porsche. The prototypes and pre-series vehicles complete around 4.4 million test kilometres in temperatures ranging from minus 45 degrees to plus 50 degrees. The main objective of the extensive testing process is to achieve a perfect balance between the many components, some of which were developed especially for the Cayenne. Testing under real-life conditions, in addition to increasingly accurate virtual simulations, is still highly valued at Porsche and represents the final examination for every new model produced by the Stuttgart-based sports

18

car manufacturer. Materials, sensors and electronics have to prove their quality and durability in different climate conditions. These include temperatures rising to plus 50 degrees Celsius in the sand dunes of Dubai (UAE) and on dusty slopes in Death Valley (USA), as well as sinking to minus 45 degrees Celsius on ice and snow in Alaska (USA). The third generation of the Cayenne also had to endure the stop-start traffic in the hot and humid conditions of Chinese cities, master test tracks in Sweden, Finland, Spain. It was transported to South Africa, Japan and New Zealand to complete an extensive on and off road testing programme. The drive, chassis, display and control concepts of the new model have been redesigned to further increase the spread between sportiness and comfort.

The assessment process began as far back as 2014 with the unit carriers and has continued to this day with prototypes and pre-series vehicles. The full vehicle test is implemented to harmonise the interaction of all individual components, as also analysing operational stability and functionality in customer usage scenarios. The process includes tough endurance tests on Hydropuls units – a hydraulic testing facility that applies artificial vibrations to both the chassis and body. The range of assessments also cover on and off road operational stability, which take place at the Porsche Weissach development centre, inside and around the facility. A vehicle’s life span is simulated under very trying conditions during the programme that they are unlikely to ever occur once the car is owned. Under everyday conditions in urban traffic, on country roads and on the motorways, the test models cover up to 240,000 km within a few months in shifts. To simulate extreme stresses, prototypes of the new Cayenne were tested around the world, including on race tracks traditionally used by Porsche to assess all its models. In Germany, the Hockenheimring and the especially challenging NürburgringNordschleife are used. In Italy, the vehicles are put through their paces in continuous operation on the 12.6-km high-speed track at Nardò. Porsche is celebrating the world première of the completely redeveloped Cayenne on August 29, 2017.

Juke ‘Kicks’ Nissan crossover dominance Dubai: Nissan dominated the global crossover market on the strength of X-Trail, Qashqai and Juke before setting the trail ablaze with Murano in 2003. In the Mideast market this supremacy has been underlined with the car maker taking 60 per cent of small urban crossover sales. The marque’s Juke and Kicks models remain contenders for the top spot in different markets. Year to date sales figures show Nissan capturing 59.7 per cent of the B-segment (small car) urban crossover market, with the Juke accounting for 44.2 per cent and the recently introduced Kicks taking a healthy 15.5 per cent (figures exclude KSA). The Kicks, aimed squarely at urban driving environments, has proved an instant hit in Gulf markets. Kicks’ rapid success is in many ways reminiscent of Juke and going on sale to the public in 2010. Juke’s bold, dynamic styling instantly captured the imagination of the motoring press and public alike, ensuring the order books began to fill up well before the car began to appear, initially on the roads of Japan, Europe and North America before being launched globally.

Grand combine planned for autonomous driving platform

MUNICH: BMW Group, Intel and Mobileye and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) signed a memorandum of understanding in developing a world leading, state-of-the-art autonomous driving platform for global deployment. The development partners intend to leverage each other’s individual strengths, capabilities and resources to enhance the platform’s technology, increase development efficiency and reduce time to market. One enabler to achieve this will be the co-location of engineers in Germany as well as other locations. FCA will bring engineering and other technical resources and expertise to the cooperation, as well as its significant sales volumes, geographic reach and long-time experience in North America. BMW Group, Intel, Mobileye and FCA, together with the recently announced development partners and system integrators, invite and welcome additional automakers and technology suppliers to join them in adopting this autonomous driving platform in an effort to create an industry-wide solution. “In order to advance autonomous driving technology, it is vital to form partnerships among automakers, technology providers and suppliers,” said FCA Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne. “Joining this cooperation will enable FCA to directly benefit from the synergies and economies of scale that are possible when companies come together with a common vision and objective.” BMW Group, Intel, and Mobileye announced in July 2016 that they were joining forces to make self-driving vehicles a reality, by collaborating to bring

32

solutions for highly automated driving (Level 3) and fully automated driving (Level 4/5) into production by 2021. Since then, they have been designing and developing a scalable architecture that can be used by multiple automakers around the world, while at the same time maintaining each automaker’s unique brand identities. The cooperation remains on-track to deploy 40 autonomous test vehicles on the road by 2017 year-end. It also expects to benefit from leveraging data and learnings from the recently announced 100 Level 4 test vehicle fleet of Mobileye, an Intel Company, demonstrating the scale effect of this collaborative approach. “The two factors that remain key to the success of the cooperation are uncompromising excellence in development, and the scalability of our autonomous driving platform,” said Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. “With FCA as our new partner, we reinforce our path

to successfully create the most relevant state-of-the-art, cross-OEM Level 3-5 solution on a global scale.” “The future of transportation relies on auto and tech industry leaders working together to develop a scalable architecture that automakers around the globe can adopt and customise,” said Brian Krzanich, Intel CEO. “We’re thrilled to welcome FCA’s contribution, bringing us a step closer to delivering the world’s safest autonomous vehicles.” “We welcome FCA’s contributions and use of the platform, which has made substantial progress over the last year and is rapidly entering the testing and execution phase,” stated Professor Amnon Shashua, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Technology Officer of Mobileye, an Intel Company. “The combination of vision-intense perception and mapping, differentiated sensor fusion, and driving policy solutions offers the highest levels of safety and versatility, in a costefficient package that will scale across all geographies and road settings.”

Emirati wins Italian karting race Abu Dhabi: Rashid Al Dhaheri, the nineyear-old Emirati, followed up his victories at the Trofeo Adria Raceway and the ROK Finale in Castelletto di Branduzzo, with a victory in Campionato Triveneto Aci Karting ROK Challenge Italy at Adria Raceway Karting. He outrivalled drivers from numerous different countries in the Mini class (8-12 years) to claim the victory. Rashid managed the qualifying intelligently and topped the timing sheets in pole position for the pre-final. Up against drivers as old as 12 years, he finished the race as runner up in a photo finish, coming in close to the winner by 0.035 seconds. After an exciting pre-final, the Abu Dhabi schoolboy started off the grid from P2, a difficult starting position in the outside line of the track. Rashid dropped back to fourth after the start but fought hard to regain the lead. The battle for the lead was tough with many overtakes but the young Emirati talent remained calm and focused to cross the line in first position overall, setting the best lap overall in the Mini ROK category along the way. Taking the podium, the youngster was delighted with his third victory in Italy in as many weeks. With this he is close to

the Mini 60 top drivers. Babyrace Driver Academy’s team manager Sandro Lorandi said: “Rashid is always taking a step forward. He is among the youngest on the team yet he continues to impress with his professionality, maturity and his pace. We are convinced he will steadily progress through the various karting categories and achieve important success in his future.”

Al Dhaheri said: “I am very happy and proud of my victory today. It gives me goose bumps listening to the UAE’s national anthem standing on the podium. Both races were tough because there are many top drivers able to keep a very high pace. I was very focused on the last laps of the final to win. Thanks so much to all the Babyrace crew and to everybody who is supporting me.”

Hamilton to test Pirelli tyres Mercedes driver, Lewis Hamilton, will undertake a 2018 Pirelli tyre test at Paul Ricard, and the championship leader says that he volunteered to do it. Many paddock insiders believe that even with careful restrictions imposed by Pirelli tyre, testing can be of huge benefit the drivers involved. It is believed that both Vettel and Ferrari gained from their focus on last year’s running. The week’s test will also give Hamilton a useful chance to sample the 2018 French GP venue in a current car. “I’ll be doing a test later this week, which is very rare for me, I’m not a tester,” said Hamilton. “I’m looking forward to it, I offered to do it, so I’m looking forward to that – kind of.” Pirelli conducted a strictly organised test programme for 2018, with all the teams taking part with their current cars. Mercedes has already run one day with Bottas, a test that was combined with the general on in Budapest after the Hungarian GP. Having already signed off on the future constructions, which had an FIA deadline of September 1, Pirelli is now focussing on compounds, which have to be defined by December 1.

Look inside the Portofino

Ferrari Portofino, the new V8 GT will make its world debut at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September, said the company. Portofino -- according to the company a particularly evocative name – a renowned, charming tourist port over the years has become internationally synonymous with elegance, sportiness and understated luxury. Rosso Portofino, the launch colour of the new Ferrari, is also dedicated to this town. The drop-top is set to dominate its segment with a combination of sportiness, elegance and on board comfort, said Ferrari. It replaces the California T. Capable of unleashing 600 cv and sprinting from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in just 3.5 seconds, the Portofino combines the advantages of a retractable hard top, a roomy boot and generous cockpit space plus two rear seats suitable for short trips. Its all-new chassis features a significant weight saving over its predecessor. The extensive use of modern production technologies has meant all the chassis and bodyin-white components have been redesigned. Thus reduction in weight

34

despite an increase in torsional rigidity has been effected. The Ferrari V8 turbo is part of the engine family nominated international engine of the year both in 2016 and 2017. In its new avatar, with the adoption of new components and specific calibration of the engine management software it punches out 40 cv more. The characteristic Ferrari V8 soundtrack has also been further enhanced and can be fully appreciated, particularly in top-down driving. All aspects of the eight-cylinder’s efficiency have been honed with the adoption of new pistons and con-rods, and a new intake system design. The geometries throughout the exhaust system have also been revolutionised. The new one-piece-cast exhaust header reduces losses, important in ensuring Ferrari’s characteristic throttle response with zero turbo lag. These improvements and the variable boost management which adjusts torque delivery to suit the gear selected, enable the Portofino to offer even higher levels of acceleration in all gears and lower fuel consumption compared to the outgoing model. The new model’s vehicle dynamic

characteristics have been completely revised. It benefits from the introduction of new technological solutions. In a path-breaker, the third generation electronic rear differential (E-Diff3) has been adopted and integrated with the F1-Trac, improving both mechanical grip and the control of the car on the limit. The Portofino is also the first GT in the range to be fitted with EPS (Electric Power Steering). The integration with the E-Diff3 helped engineers reduce the steering ratio by seven per cent for even more responsive steering without a tradeoff in stability. The magnetorheological damping system (SCM-E) has been uprated with dual-coil technology. This helps reduce roll while simultaneously improving absorption of road surface unevenness. The result is more dynamic, responsive car that also delivers superior ride comfort. The Portofino, an aggressivelystyled car with a two-box fastback configuration – unprecedented in a coupé-convertible with a retractable hard top - adds extra sleekness to its silhouette, lending it a sportier character without impinging on its elegance and dynamism.

Close collaboration between the Aerodynamics department and Ferrari Design has ensured maximum efficiency in the development of the surface treatment. In the front, the large radiator grille opening that stretches from edge to edge of the carefully contoured nose, is underscored by a new full-LED headlight assembly with a more horizontal shape. The outside edge of the headlight hides an innovative air intake which vents into the front wheelarch and exits along the flank to reduce drag. The tail underlines the car’s sporty stance, further enhanced by placing the tail lights futher apart. This cleverly conceals the rear volume housing the all-new RHT, featuring a more lightweight design and can be raised or lowered at low speeds. Focus on the on board comfort has guaranteed a slew of new features -- an infotainment system with 10.2 touchscreen display, a new airconditioning system that improves occupant comfort both with the top up or down, a new steering wheel, 18way electrically adjustable seats with a new backrest design that boosts legroom for rear seat passengers, and the passenger display. All occupants will particularly appreciate the new wind deflector which, when the top is dropped, cuts air flow inside the cabin by 30 per cent and also reduces aerodynamic noise.

Promising a comfortable and smooth journey Jaguar f pace

36

37

TEST DRIVE

Jaguar Land Rover introduces the F Pace, perhaps the first sports utility vehicle (SUV) from its factory. In Bahrain it shies a little since its bigger brothers the Land Rovers are very much a part of the same house. The SUV is also up against the Porsche Macan and the Audi Q5. We look at the test drive of the 3 litre petrol version, although we are aware of a diesel version as well. For a start, the F Pace compares with the recently launched Land Rover Discovery Sport. However, comparison to a certain extent stops dead there. Jaguar in its releases has said that the F-Pace is about performance. Look at the bonnet and the lights and let the eyes go to the haunches, the SUV is not very bulky but has a sleekness associated with a sporty look. The sight of the Jaguar makes people turn because it is not often one sees a Jaguar SUV. Inside the bonnet is a vertical six cylinder and hence the V6. Push the ignition and the Jaguar comes alive with a light growl hardly audible. The car feels very light, thanks to the aluminium and magnesium used extensively alongside the tough plastic, not to mention the steel to keep the vehicle grounded. What caught my attention is the colour itself – Caesium blue, hardly seen on any other. Before the drive began I glimpsed through the interior and the features of the F Pace. The smooth ride, I must say was

38

39

TEST DRIVE

also because of the comfortable seats. At the bends it looked I was sinking into it. The front passenger seat is height adjustable as standard, with full electric adjustment available as an option. The F-Pace is easily big enough to accommodate most families. The room at the back is, I must confess, enough and more like a Porsche Macan. Add a third rear passenger and life becomes less comfortable for everyone, while the relatively small rear windows don’t exactly flood the cabin with light. All models have a rear armrest as standard that houses a couple of cupholders. The F-Pace is a road-focused vehicle. It’s a good performer. For the high revvs, the car seems not to make too much noise. The V6 mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox it proved a good ride. The gear-shift, did we ever do it? Yes and it was much more smoother than we expected it to be. What is great about the F Pace is the weave. Turn around the bends and one feels the effortless move. Even rather sharp turns seemed to be taken with ease that one hardly finds in the bigger vehicles. The agility of the beast is very evident in the car. This is the feeling one got from driving the Porsche Macan. Another key factor for the Bahrain market is the visibility. The front and the rear parking sensors leave no space for any inconvenience. A reverse camera, one learns, is optional. The 8.0 inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard and Jaguar calls it InControl Touch. It has all the normal features one sees in a car these days. The boot capacity of 650 litres, measures fairly good for a car that is not a weekend

40

getaway. One surely is not going to be carrying the bicycles and other paraphernalia associated with a weekender. Fold down the rear seats and you’re left with a virtually flat extended load bay to slide in longer loads. A powered tailgate is standard across the range. Lane keep assist, which can actively apply steering inputs to keep you in your lane on the motorway, and a driver tiredness monitor, are available as an option. The F Pace ride is even more comfortable on the purse, considering that the fuel efficiency is almost nine kilometres to a litre. The engine did pull pretty heavy what with the strength of 340 horses. Push the pedal and one finds the rev counter ticking and the bite moving out, with the 450 Nm

coming to life. The F Pace is capable of moving from standstill to 100 in about 6 seconds. A good buy indeed if you are a Jaguar fan.

Zagatos ready for production

CA, USA: Vanquish Zagato Speedster is all set to enter production and it will be joined by Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brake. The ‘family’ of four Vanquish Zagato models will yield a total of 325 cars. Shooting Brake will enter production in 2018, with a total build run of 99 cars. Vanquish Zagato Speedster, the rarest, had a production run of only 28 cars. The entire production of Zagato Speedsters sold off, with deliveries scheduled for 2018. The first member of the family, to enter production was Vanquish Zagato Coupes in late 2016. Next was the Vanquish Zagato Volante. Once again strictly limited to 99 cars (all of which have been sold), production has commenced and deliveries will be completed through 2018. All the body panels are made from carbon fibre (like the other cars in the Vanquish Zagato family). With all four cars based upon the Vanquish S, each Zagato enjoys the combination of 600PS naturallyaspirated V12 mated to the smooth, slick-shifting Touchtronic III transmission. Together with adaptive damping – fine-tuned for each model - the Vanquish Zagato family promises exceptional driving pleasure. The Speedster and Shooting Brake represent the two extremes of the family. The Speedster is an

44

uncompromising roofless design. It expresses the raw excitement of an open-top ultra-high performance sports car. The boldest aspect of its design is the Speed Humps that rise up to form streamlined cowls that flow back from the seats, representing Zagato’s signature ‘double-bubble’ roof. Shared details, such as the Aston Martin Vulcan-inspired ‘Blade’ tail lights and repeated 3D Zagato ‘Z’ motifs in the front grille and rear vent meshes, create an unbroken stylistic thread that connects these otherwise individual creations.

The Shooting Brake, however, is still a strict two-seater, but one conceived as an individual and exceptionally practical GT. The extended roof on the concept sketch bears the iconic Zagato ‘double-bubble’ surfacing complete with glass inlays to let light flood into the cockpit. The sculptural roof culminates in a powered tailgate that opens onto a luxuriously trimmed rear cabin area, complete with a tailored luggage set. With dramatic herringbone carbon fibre facia with anodised bronze rotary controls, extensive ‘Z’ motif quilting and the option of a fully aniline leather

upholstery, the Shooting Brake is a fitting complement to the Coupe, Volante and Speedster.

want Zagato to remain something very special. We’re creating collectibles, future concours cars.”

Aston Martin Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman, said of the Vanquish Zagato family: “We haven’t released Zagato models as a family before, at least not in this way. Why create a family of Zagatos? Well, many of our customers want different things. Some prefer the purity of a Coupe, but others love the idea of something more extreme, like the Speedster. We

Andrea Zagato, CEO of Zagato said of the enduring creative partnership: “Zagato’s relationship with Aston Martin began with my grandfather and the DB4 GT Zagato, almost sixty years ago. To have a creative ‘marriage‘ thrive for three generations is something as unique as the cars themselves. My family name is associated with all kinds of wonderful

designs, but for many enthusiasts and collectors around the world those that combine the Z of Zagato with the wings of Aston Martin are the most special. Collaborating closely on the design of four complimentary, yet completely different Vanquish Zagatos has been an incredibly exciting challenge. I’m proud to continue the story my grandfather started and thrilled that our partnership with Aston Martin continues to realise such exciting cars.”

JAGUAR F TYPE: FASTER, AGILE, SPORTY

REVIEW

Jaguar is introducing state-of-the-art four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine to broaden the appeal of the new F-TYPE , The family now spans the entry-level fourcylinder model to Jaguar’s 200mph allweather supercar – the F-TYPE SVR. The pairing of Jaguar’s all-aluminium twoseat sports car with the advanced 300PS 2.0-litre turbocharged power plant delivers Jaguar sports car DNA with enhanced agility and improved efficiency and affordability. The new model retains the performance expected from the F-TYPE. It can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in only 5.7 seconds and touch achieve a top speed of 250 km/h. The turbocharged engine’s high maximum torque of 400Nm, generated from just 1,500rpm, together with the eight-speed quickshift transmission, delivers exceptional response throughout the rev range. The exhaust manifold is integrated into the cylinder head casting. Coolant flowing through ducts in the manifold reduces warm-up times and therefore reduces fuel consumption and emissions. The manifold is carefully matched to a twin-scroll turbocharger. The 300PS Ingenium engine is perhaps the most powerful four-cylinder unit ever offered in a production Jaguar. It can also generate the highest specific power out-

48

put of any engine in the F-TYPE range: 150PS per litre. The result – the new model becomes the most efficient F-TYPE in the range, with a 16 per cent improvement in fuel economy over the 340PS V6, together with Carbon dioxide emissions of just 163g/km on the European combined cycle. The Ingenium engine contributes to an overall vehicle weight reduction of 52kg – most of which is over the front axle – and this is key to the four-cylinder F-TYPE’s enhanced agility. Meticulous tuning of the chassis to complement the new engine delivers even greater steering response, body control and ride comfort. The introduction of the four-cylinder does not mean that drivers lose out on aural feedback or reward and have not been compromised. A meticulously-tuned active exhaust is standard on entry-level FTYPE models, while the R-Dynamic variants feature a switchable active exhaust for an even more involving driving experience. Most of the weight reduction is over the front axle, making the car beautifully balanced and really agile to drive. Couple that with a four-cylinder exhaust note and this particular F-TYPE has a character all of its own. The entry-level four-cylinder models are

equipped as standard with new, lightweight 18-inch wheels fitted with 245/45/ R18 tyres at the front axle and 275/40/ R18 tyres at the rear: these help to reduce unsprung mass, further improving responsiveness and control. Further support for the driver comes from the Adaptive Speed Limiter (ASL). This intelligent system uses TSR system data to adjust the set point and can automatically increase or decrease the vehicle’s maximum speed while the accelerator pedal is pressed. If the TSR system recognises a higher speed limit ahead, ASL notifies the

driver and can smoothly accelerate the vehicle up to the new limit. If the speed limit is lower, the vehicle can coast down accordingly. Driver fatigue is a common cause of vehicles drifting out of lane. The F-TYPE’s Driver Condition Monitor system can recognise patterns typical of driving when tired, including periods of little or no steering activity followed by sudden or excessive inputs, and can show a multi-stage warning in the instrument cluster and give audible warnings to prompt the driver to take a break.

The GP 1800 a buyer’s delight

Yamaha introduced the GP 1800 Waverunner, considered an epitome of speed, by all who own it. Not just speed, it is also as playful as a kitty on the Gulf waters. The runner is considered the best out-of-the-box WaveRunner that one can ever buy. Of the array of 12 WaveRunners set for 2017, GP1800 enjoys pole position. Reinstating the GP strengths, Yamaha introduced it on GP 1200 in 1997. However, the one that befits the name the most though for now is the 1800 – a lively machine. The heart of the 1800 is Yamaha’s Super Vortex High Output (SVHO) 1812cc supercharged engine. The relatively new VX hull, its agility and turning ability leave all other older platforms in their wake. The GP 1800 is the only supercharged WaveRunner with a hull constructed from the NanoXcel 2 hull material. GAZ learns from combing the net that the high-compression moulded material, NanoXcel 2 is light but strong, giving a 11-13kg weigh saving over the FZS and FZR, and the same weight as the VXR eben with all the ‘bolt-ons’ for the supercharging and, additional 80 horsepower. Any doubts of the new Waverunner’s capabilities may be put to rest. Looking at the specs and a talk with the owners reveals that it has bloodline of the GP1300R. The SVHO engine introduced in 2014, has serious preferences among those who know it and now own it. Tested on the Australian circuit soon after being built, it won 19 of 21 wins in 2014, again

Users in Bahrain claim that this 348kg three-seater race-inspired WaveRunner offered exciting acceleration. It is also great on and nimble on agility, and fun on accessibility. Professional WaveRunner rider Mitch Wayt in a comment said that the GP1800 is a highly competitive new performance watercraft in 2017. The big difference with another super craft, the FZs is that they are fast on acceleration, but they do not prefer in the chop. The GP1800 makes a real difference here with the liking for the hard bank. On performance, its waves ahead of any competition from peers. That said, The 1800 is a sociable beast. This Waverunner features some super features including RiDE — the twintrigger or dual-throttle reverse and deceleration system that’s as intuitive as the brakes on a pushbike — plus electric trim which let you carve a deeper path. The 1800 wears an upgraded appearance. Yamaha has used colourmatched grips and fork details, a very comfortable two-piece cut-and-stitched race seat, a custom Hydroturf mats and the race blue and red hulls that pop in the sun. As though all this is not enough, the GP1800 wears the common WaveRunner remote-controlled security system with Low RPM mode. Touch the button and the easy control springs alive in the Low RPM mode and Security mode in which it declines any unauthorised use. New riders just getting to the surf will find

much help from the low RPM. It also benefits the fuel economy. The 70 litre fuel capacity is just another important feature that, coupled with the economical four-stroke engine in the light but strong VX hull, gives an impressive range. Official factory figures say 143km at 57kmh and 129km at 67kmh. The GP1800 looks great with its decals and two-tone styling, but it’s also got some real ride comfort and design intelligence. Consider storage, another key aspect that is often forgotten, and the 800 has an impressive 93 litre of space thanks to a deep bow bonnet, a removable watertight rear bucket under the seat, and glove box with twin drink holders. The Waverunner, yes it is, skimming effortlessly over the chop and the surf of the Gulf water, it is a beauty while set to cruise. The wide window on the multifunction LCD screen lets one access the trim levels, speed and revs at-a-glance while on the throttle. Similarly the revision mirrors and forward cowl add the aerodynamic looks and help cut the wind. The effortless ease of towing, the folddown rear-boarding step and stern hook assist this role and clambering back aboard should one come a cropper. The bolstered three-person sports racing seat feels comfortable and reassuring during one-up rides. How does one see the GP1800, it’s a sheer engineering marvel on the wave. The ergonomics of the GP1800 also mean one just fuses and blends into the WaveRunner and find you’re not fighting the machine so much as working with it.

Quoting a user, the SVHO uses a 1.8L supercharged four-cylinder engine with the high volume 160mm pump using a eight-vane impeller, forged pistons for added strength, and open-loop cooling, which Yamaha reminds is the industry standard and time proven. It can be flushed out after use and everything is back to normal. The engine power in the hull material, considered the lightest material available in the WaveRunner range, gives an impressive power-to-weight ratio and 28 per cent better numbers that the threeseater competition. The use of NanoXcel2 hull has shaved 20kg over NanoXcel in the VXR. This saving is then offset by the extra weight of the supercharger, drive gears, cooler piping, larger oil cooler, bigger pump and intercooler to arrive at the same weight as the VXR. Despite it all there is an additional 80hp, giving it an overall

260-265hp on the GP1800 v 180-185hp on the VXR. The VX hull has been designed so can do everything, but in this role it offers true tacking thanks to the strakes, good lift and buoyancy in the bow, a fine entry that you can trim-in to slice the waves, but soft bow chines to reduce pounding. We have now ridden this VX hull right across the line-up and like it. Once on the throttle, the acceleration comes alive and kicking, the G Forces in the turns, and respond to that power one sees fit. Coupled with the sportier looks, the performance is streets ahead of the FZs that weren’t big on hooking into aggressive turns. The VXR was known to do 0-50 km/h in 1.8 seconds. Only this is the supercharged not high-output version of that four-cylinder 1812cc engine, with plenty more acceleration.

Lambos give Bahrain a fresh look

The new Aventador S, expected to roar through the Bahrain streets in September Al Ghassab’s pointer to the change in its policy to the Kingdom of Bahrain. contain all the usual stuff about new four-wheel steering systems, a 130 per cent improvement of front axle downforce and a whole new control unit to marshall inputs from all the active systems, but none of it, no matter how high-tech, overshadows the drama.

54

Aventador S uses the central carbon tub with aluminium sub-frames fore and aft. It drives all four wheels through a central Haldex clutch. The engine is 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12, but the valve timing and variable intakes have been altered, yielding another 40bhp (and exactly 1lb ft more torque). The power gain is also aided by a raised rev limiter (from 8,350rpm to 8,500rpm), according to reports available.

Aventador looks It’s a jaw-dropper alright. The proportions haven’t changed much, but the nose, taking cues from the SV, is more open and aggressive, channeling cooling air past fangs and splitters to vast standard-fit 400mm ceramic brakes. Air is also swept down the flanks to the intakes – extra ducts on the roof give the S a more hunkered down stance, and together with the rear arch shape gives something of the

flavour of the old Countach – and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. The kerbweight is the same – the rear steer mechanism added 6kg (and necessitated a wholesale redesign of the rear suspension), but a new exhaust system, rounded off by three pipes exiting in a triangle, saved 6kg, so we’re all square. There’s an active rear wing and vortex generator underneath to maximise air flow and aid brake cooling.

The new 4 wheel system, though now common in the market, has been pushed much to the north by Lamborghini. At a low speed the rear wheel of the S can turn to three degrees, we learn. The driver feels that the the S has a much shorter -- 500 mm - wheel. However, at higher speeds that wheel base sets to have gone up to 700 mm, with the rear and the fronts looking to turn the same way. This pushes driver confidence

upwards. The wheel are 255/30 ZR20 front tyres and colossal 355/25 ZR21 rears. Due to the rear steering Lambo teamed up with Pirelli to develop a brand new P Zero compound for the car. The S’s steering rack is variable. Put on track one can ignore the street drive (Strada), what with the gearshifts a little too slow. However, with Sport, it is sport on for wet circuit driving, with 90 per

55

cent of torque sent rearwards, In Corsa, focused on fast laps, one can direct 80 per cent aft. Ego, allowing selection of settings for the steering, suspension and drivetrain is very new. The Aventador S retains the sequential manual ISR sevenspeed gearbox. Lamborghini still claims the same 2.9sec sprint to 62mph, and although it’ll hit 124mph in 8.8secs and 186mph in 24.2secs the difference in tyre widths, 255 vs 355, is abnormally large) and allowed the engine to really lean on the chassis and show both off to full effect. But sitting in the Aventador S is an event in itself and, seat aside, the driving position is great. The wheel pulls way out of the dash, you pull the door down to close it, stare out through the slot, flick up the cover on the start button, feel and hear this mighty beast fire up behind and well, life feels pretty good at that moment. On corners the rear wheels can turn themselves and shorten the distance to the front wheels, which effectively creates a shorter wheelbase, said a media source. Conversely, on a straightaway at high speeds with all four wheels pointed forward, the car is at its longest (188.86 inches), which lends to greater stability for the carbon-fiber monocoque in a straight line. The result is that you get the benefits of having two cars in one—a shorter Aventador S for cornering and a longer one for straight shots.

56

This will mean that the drive feel is of being with a very experienced driver than (may be) currently driving it. With the all-wheel-steering, one can get away with far more around tight turns and twists than ever before. Those handling improvements will come in handy for Lambo’s newest customers considering what’s now under the hood. The 2018 Aventador S’s V12 engine is a massive upgrade on the same boundarybreaking, naturally aspirated mid-rear

V12s that went on to catapult the Muira, Countach, Diablo, and Murciélago to legendary status. It produces 40 more horsepower on top of the 2017 Aventador’s already hefty 700. It also produces higher torque (690 newton metres) and higher revs in general than last year’s model. The car goes zero to 62 mph in 2.9 seconds (down a fraction of a second from its predecessor and faster than the 3.2-second Huracán). Hit 124 mph faster

than you can count to 10 and 186 mph in fewer than 25 seconds. Top speed is 217 mph. In short, when compared with the Aventador, driving the 2018 Aventador S feels like a slap in the face. Everything is louder, more abrupt, and far, far faster. And it sounds like sheet metal hitting the ground as it accelerates. The new damper controls and Aventador S’s new damper controls and updated suspension kinematics are known as “Lamborghini Magnetorheological Suspension 2.0 Hi-Fi. They use the electromagnetic fluid to adapt continually to road conditions. That seems impossible to imagine, but did you see Fate of the Furious? Active, push-rod suspension with magna-ride really works. And if on the street, new Pirelli p Zero tires enable enhanced grip as well. As long as you have adequate clearance above the surface of the street, the car should be able to handle the rest. A new seven-speed gearbox with independent shifting rods allows for quicker, smoother transitions, giving the S a sportier feel when using the manual paddle shifters because each gear change is more precise. It also feels more comfortable (though less exciting) to drive in automatic because each gear change is ironed out like a sail. The “Automatic” gear-change function is not available in the Corsa drive mode— that’s the one best reserved for track

settings, since it’s the rawest of the now four modes available. Sport, Strata, and the new Ego mode—are the other drive settings available, and they work with either manual or automatic shifting, permitting switch between the drive settings at will, at whatever speed you want. The S is personalised in that it allows the adjustable four-wheel drive to calibrate into one of 24 different personalised combinations of the other three modes,

depending on the driver’s style and sensibility. Monitoring the gearbox, the suspension, the all-wheel steering—is another green technology -- Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo Attiva (LDVA). LDVA controls how the vehicle moves laterally, vertically, and longitudinally. It maintains the ideal combination of traction control, thrust, power, and other systems for a given driving surface. Nowhere have cars ever controlled the

57

COVER STORY drive, but it is said the LDVA pushes them closer to that goal. The difference between the Aventador and the Avendator S over a slalom-style course is palpable. New vents in the sides and underneath the car improve air cooling, which is the single most important thing to manage in performance cars—the cooler you can keep the engine bay, the faster and longer you can go (and the less chance you have of blowing up). A rear-end restructured to be squarer and larger overall also allows for better aerodynamics, which translates into faster speeds and better efficiency. The car also feels faster when it strikes. An increased front splitter and the new aero diffuser with three new active rearwing positions increase downforce by 130 percent, with 50 percent better efficiency at the highest points of downforce. Lamborghini has not yet released efficiency numbers of city and highway driving, though it’s safe to assume they’re slightly better than the 11 mpg city/18 mpg highway offered on Aventador primo. The Aventador S is not just a track car, it also fits into the feel of a city bred. According to information available, it is capable of taking pot holes. The seagull doors in the S have a handle at the lower end, say the media. The low floor seat helps to gently pop open the doors A very noticeable change inside the S, says the media is the instrument cluster.

The digital screen scrolls through the varying configurations displaying speed, RPM, engine status, fuel levels, gears, and other safety and traction systems depending on which drive is chosen. The display for Corsa—one full RPM arch— feels extra race-ready. Another big introduction to the street of the Kingdom of Bahrain is the Huracán Performante. True to its name the Performate has reworked the concept of super sports cars. The standards set by this Huracan is undeniably performance never seen before. The re-engineered vehicle in its weight, engine power, chassis and above all by introducing an innovative system of active aerodynamics: ALA, took the Huracán Performante to complete a lap at Nürburgring in 00:06:52:01 setting a new record for best lap and becoming the fastest standard production car at the Shrine of Speed. Hop in and test drive to understand how the Performante – designed to be the fastest -- differs from all the other Huracán models. It has been completely updated with an improved engine, increased performance of the steering and suspension, using ultra-lightweight materials, in addition to introducing an innovative active aerodynamic system in order to improve the performance level and driving experience. The exteriors of the new Huracan breed express performance, with the front and rear spoilers made entirely of Forged Composites. They enable the aerodynamics to be actively exploited

to achieve maximum performance by increasing or decreasing the downforce as required. The new, even lighter wheel rims hold the new Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres, providing incredible grip. The interior fully reflects the character of the Huracán Performante. The interior fittings are made from the highest quality materials: the seats are of carbon fibre, the interior parts of Forged Composites, and the upholstery is from Alcantara --extremely light materials that contribute to and increase performance. The powerful V10 engine, massive use of forged composites makes it even lighter in weight, the LDF 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and the new ALA active aerodynamic system that controls air and directs it in its favor. It has ruled the circuit. Now it will rule your road. Totally renovated and redesigned with fluid dynamics optimised at both intake and exhaust, the engine is the aspirated V10 with the highest specific power. The new intake ducts come directly from Lamborghini Motorsport’s experience and improve response at all speeds. The double clutch transmission (LDF) has been further perfected and now is able to support even the highest performance. All this wrapped up in the even more vibrant and thrilling sound of the new lightened exhaust system. Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva (ALA), a smart and innovative system that manages active aerodynamics. ALA adapts to the driving style and type of route. When necessary, it increases vertical load to assist stability and

speed through curves, or it reduces aerodynamic resistance to assist acceleration and reaching the top speed. The double wishbone suspension architecture system guarantees perfect balance between usability of the vehicle and sports performance. The standard suspension is also teamed up with an optional system of magnetorheological shock absorbers that instantaneously respond to driving style and adapt to the road conditions and driving dynamics, improving control over the vehicle, especially on the circuit. The Performante is equipped with Electronic Power Steering (EPS) -- a system that perfectly adapts to all driving styles and always ensures the right power assistance on both track and road, following all ANIMA driving modes. The innovative Lamborghini Dynamic Steering (LDS) system is also available as an option. It lets you dynamically change the steering ratio, especially in CORSA mode, to get a more direct response on the circuit. The impact of two gearboxes in the same unit -- while one gear is engaged, the next is already selected to reduce shifting time and be sure the shift occurs instantaneously and in the smoothest way possible, by opening one clutch and closing the other. This is what the Huracán Performante is able to offer you, thanks to its seven-speed Lamborghini Doppia Frizione (LDF) dualclutch transmission. The main instrument panel graphics of the Huracán Performante also convey

a sense of performance and speed. In CORSA mode, the tachometer and gear indicator are clearly visible in the center, just like on a race car. CarPlay and the Lamborghini Telemetry System are available as options. With Car Play, one can pair the iPhone to the car to get the main personal apps available to be displayed directly on the instrument panel. The Lamborghini Telemetry System, on the other hand, helps record performance in real time and analyze it afterwards to improve your driving skills. The all-wheel-drive system is controlled electronically and guarantees greater speed and precision in transferring torque between the axles. All this turns into improved control in all driving conditions. The system continuously varies the division of torque on the basis of the selected driving mode and the road conditions. The result is

exhilarating: improved power transfer on bends and when accelerating during demanding stretches of driving, and at the same time better grip and safety during day-to-day driving. Forged Composites is one of the secrets of the new Huracán Performante’s performance. It is the lightest and most resistant and innovative material that Automobili Lamborghini uses today, and allows components with complex geometries at the heart of the front and rear structures of the ALA to be made. Discover all the options available to personalize the Huracán Performante. Choose the car of one’s dreams. That’s why there is a range of colors for the vehicle’s exterior, interior, stitching, cockpit materials and brake calipers; the combinations are practically infinite, and allow you to create a unique car, always with pure Italian style.

INTERVIEW

Lamborghini poised for double digit growth The importance of the Bahrain market to Lamborghini and its dealer in Saudi Arabia, Al Ghassan Motors, has resulted in the appointment of a Martin Andrews as Operations Director, to head the Bahrain growth strategy. In an exclusive chat with the Gulf Auto Zone (GAZ) magazine, he shared his views on the market, the plans to grow Lamborghini share and the new products with their pricing. Excerpts: Congratulations on the Bahrain posting. It is with pleasure that I meet you here in the Lamborghini premises. Let us start with your reading of this market in terms of growth for Lamborghini. The growth right now is more in terms of our actions, rather than the market. Bahrain as an economy is pretty well developed and stable compared to other markets around the Middle East. Traditionally the market for new cars has been a single digit annually but we are increasing already, however we expect that to increase dramatically with the introduction of the SUV in July 2018. We try to give many facilities. Two of the main changes we have already made are in terms of funding and the availability of preowned cars. Both of these we believe can bring people into the brand that may not previously have considered it. However the standards should always be high. We do not just sell cars; we sell cars that one can aspire to. New products into this market for the rest of this year: Very soon in Bahrain we will receive the Aventador S. The S is the latest generation of the Aventador, but it is very different. It is more powerful and

60

in terms of technology for example with four-wheel steering which dramatically improves the handling. For me the aesthetics of the car have made a beautiful car just stunning! Then there is the Performante, the ultimate generation of Huracan. The Performante is the most powerful

Huracan with outstanding handling and is a true driver’s car. We hope to have this in the showroom by the end of September. For the next year, the factory has just announced that the Aventador will be joined by an Aventador Roadster, and I personally hope that the Performante will be joined by a Performante Spyder. Of course in addition we will see the Urus SSUV hopefully from July.

The classification of the Lamborghini owner and the price tag on new products: I don’t! I have been working with Lamborghini for over 12 years now. I have been involved in Lamborghini in the Middle East since 2009. I remember selling a Lamborghini, the most expensive one at that period of time to a customer who bought it for their 15 year old to use within the grounds of their property! There is no one profile for our customers. The only common ground is their love of the brand. It has a very loyal following. Potentials of this car to grow among the youth of this nation has not been fully realised. Yes. In our seven years as a dealer we have learned about this market and most importantly we have listened to our customers. As a result we have developed into a new showroom in a much better location as well as development of our aftersales into a brand new workshop facility. We are also developing our pre-owned showroom next to the workshop. About the Bahrain potential, we have been always giving Bahrain the focus it deserves. However, with all the new investments and the increased potential in Bahrain we as Al Ghassan Motors feel this market deserves even more attention and this is the main reason for shifting my base here. The exclusive high-end car dealers talking about clientele growth, look to a niche segment. Are you looking at this niche market and thus looking to cutting from the same pie, or are you looking to grow the pie and reap from that growth? I see that we will lead the segment. However, we are a very exclusive brand and thus it is not always a matter of who

can have these cars. Quite often it’s down to the availability. Lamborghini in my opinion will never seek the high volume markets. The expansion, will be the introduction of the SUV, which will bring a whole new clientele to the brand – clients who could not make a choice of a two-seater sports car but want to enjoy the power and drive of a sports car whilst having the flexibility of an SUV. I don’t believe we have a competitor for this car and it will therefore open up a new segment completely. Returning to the SUV that is to be introduced into this market – profile the SUV and the potential customer. I have very limited details of the car. However, what I can say is that the SUV is not classified just as an SUV, it is a super sports utility vehicle (SSUV). Considering that the car will have the handling, acceleration and general feel of the Lamborghini, despite the fact that it is going to be in the form of a utility vehicle which will be at least a four-seat car. I would like to think it will bring in more daily drivers into our market – especially those who may not have considered the previous products. This is the opportunity to have a Lamborghini

that will meet all their requirements without losing any of the core values. It’s been 24 years since Lamborghini last made a utility vehicle, which was the LM002, and this is a very different concept. It’s a very exciting time for us. Service for Lamborghini customers in Bahrain: The Lamborghini service is built around the needs of the customers and in my time since coming to Bahrain I have listened to a number of them. As a result of this already we have tripled our technicians, taken on an addition

Service Advisor to enhance the larger facilities that we moved into at the end of last year. We are investing heavily in sales and product training as well as technical training both regionally and at the factory. We now have excellent facilities for both Sales and Aftersales which should serve our customers even with the increase in sales that we will see. For the future of the business I have a personal wish to build a strong business that is passionately run by people from the local community. I feel this is important for the long term future.

...Focus on existing potential Lamborghini is waking up to the Bahrain market and realizing the potential. The strengths have to be tapped, said Nasser Juma the Brand Manager. He talks to GAZ on the strengths and his plans. You have been in the market even prior to Lamborghini and know how to grow this. Look at beyond today. Your comments: The potential exists for the Lamborghini brand to grow to double digit. We need to focus more and yes we are doing that now. The appointment of the operations manager is a step in the right direction. From the five and seven cars to about 14 to 16 cars is indeed going to be an uphill task, but we intend achieving it. How do you plan to help the new operations manager in this growth? Together with him and the rest of the team, the brand will grow. As one who has been in this market earlier I am aware of the segments that need to be tapped into to ensure the growth. We are looking at implementing new strategies that the operations manager brings to the table and with the help of all sections, including the media, we will make it bear fruit. The service centre is one key area that is going to lift this market. The upgrade in service is sure to bring in more people looking at this brand because they realise they have their problems solved locally.

Hamilton tops in colourful Spa Grand Prix

The Belgium Formula One saw the British Lewis Hamilton in his Mercedes take the chequered flag. However, that was not without its tense moments. Hamilton admits that Ferrari had a very fast car. The grid looked very picturesque with Hamilton on pole, followed by Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari and then came Valterri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen in that order. At the end of the race, Hamilton who completed his 200th Grand Prix was happy to have it close. The win was his 58th success. It also added another plume to his hat, that of equaling Michael Schumacher’s 68 pole positions. On the points grid, he close the deficit to Vettel, bringing it to seven points. Did the winner at any point of time look to falling behind? He had to fight Vettel, who enjoyed the benefit of a tow following the safety car restart. Hamilton had a good start. He rushed into the lead as the lights went off and all through maintained it, though the Red Ferrari did close in on many occasions looking for that one element of error. Hamilton managed to keep the lead and ensured that he did not make any mistakes.

62

The runner up at the Spa was Vettel. He said the car was very good and the team had not brought in many changes since Silverstone. The other person to have enjoyed the Spa was Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo taking full advantage of all he had and racing to the second runner up. The safety car restart gave him an unexpected chance to attack, coming up from behind Bottas to be the third on the lap. The Australian now has six podiums and one victory - to his credit in 2017. Ricciardo has proved to be the one that

given even half a sniff rarely mises the chance to maximise his performances. Team Renault was happy at the form of Nico Hulkenberg, delivering a strong result that helped them close on Williams, Toro Rosso and Haas ahead. Force India and fourth remain some way up the road, but Hulk’s second sixth-place in three races gives Renault great cause for optimism. He expressed optimism going into Monza. A record 265,000 fans flooded SpaFrancorchamps over the weekend.

The unlucky one though was Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, who had a great beginning but soon ran into problems with a power loss. He could be seen shaking his head and had to be retired early in the race. One could hear him say, “Unbelievable, I cannot believe this. The extra event at the race was the Force India team Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez colliding even on the opening lap. A five-second penalty had left Perez playing catch up, but he used the undercut to leapfrog Ocon - something the Frenchman was determined to put right. On lap 29 Ocon launched his attack coming out of La Source - only for Perez to move across and defend the line. In an almost carbon copy of lap one, the pair made contact on the run to Eau Rouge - only this time Ocon suffered a broken front wing, and Perez a punctured rear.

Maintain Maintenance Free batteries Most all automobiles today run on maintenance-free batteries. The irony here is that while the advertisement says Maintenance free, are these batteries really maintenance free. What does it mean and what is the difference between these and the batteries of yester years? GAZMAN takes a look at the difference and how one needs to care for these maintenance free batteries so they last much longer. The more love and care one gives plants and animals, the more they will love and produce. Similarly, the more care one gives these batteries, the more they will last and serve one. Modern batteries usually come with sealed vent caps. Vent caps are the plastic caps seen on the top of the electrodes. This sealing means there is not a need to pour any more water into the battery. This is a far cry from the batteries of yester year, where the caps on the top would be removed and distilled water would be poured into them till the required level so the acid and water levels can be maintained. , which means you no longer should check water levels — a requirement of some earlier batteries. Here’s how to provide the right maintenance to your maintenance-free battery to keep it in tip-top shape, and ensure it has the longest life. Automotive Batteries What’s the difference between today’s automotive batteries and those popular in the 1970s and earlier? The first rechargeable batteries for commercial use were composed of lead-acid, and those components are still used to this day. But earlier car batteries were not as evolved as those used today, which now come with a more durable construction and contain a highly sophisticated blend of alloys that helps reduce water loss and self-discharge. Computerized equipment and robotic processes have also evolved batteries to store and deliver power with peak efficiency lasting much longer than traditional designs. With proper use, water loss is generally not an issue with today’s lead-calcium

66

alloy batteries as it was with the earlier batteries. Most batteries feature vent caps that do not allow you to open and add water, and the warranty often becomes void if you do. Battery Care Although the inside of a maintenancefree battery cannot be physically cared for, the outside certainly can be. The steps to be followed towards keeping the battery running longer are: Before opening the bonnet keep a pair of gloves and eyewear protection ready. Wear a protect apron and then disconnect the cables connecting the battery. Al batteries do contain acid. Should it spill it can cause uneasiness to the body parts that it comes in touch with. Disconnect the battery from the cables. Unhook the negative (black) cable followed by the positive (red) cable. After removing the connecting cables, always lift the battery vertically upwards and keep it on a flat and smooth floor. The first thing to do is to check the shell of the battery and the electrodes -- the two capped points to which the wires are connected. It is important to ensure that

the body of the battery is not cracked or swollen or eroded at any point. If there is any crack or swollen surface it is important to check the warranty of the product. Should the battery be in warranty period, it is important to inform the dealer and have the battery replaced. However, should the battery warranty have expired, it is important not to tamper with the shell. Inform a battery mechanic. Some dealers do take such batteries and replace them with new ones. After ensuring the shell is in good condition, use a clean and soft cloth to clean the terminals. Then use a Zero sandpaper -- available with all construction shops -- to very gently clean the terminals. Clean terminals without any dirt build up is an essential part of ensuring that the charge flows from and through the batteries. Thereafter, gently tap the cables with the tip of a screw driver to clean the cable edges that connect to the battery. Thereafter using the sand paper gently clean the insides of the cable ring connecting to the battery. Another method for removing residue is to add a tablespoon of baking soda to a cup of water and stir. Next, pour

the solution directly on the corrosion to dissolve it. There are also terminal cleaner sprays that do a fantastic job with less of a mess. After cleaning the battery and the cables, check the charge in the battery using a voltage meter. Any store or shop (places like Lulu, Geant and such other mega stores) and outlets selling electrical equipment generally have the latest voltmeter. Keep a multi meter handy to ensure that the charge in the battery is sufficient. Use a battery charger to connect the terminals of the battery to the charging source, preferably another battery. Should the multimeter show that the battery charge is not sufficient, then it is important to have the battery charged at an auto electrician’s shop or have a battery charger at home. A battery charger at home is an essential must. The charger can help charge the battery once every three to five days. This keeps the charge in the battery full and ensure a safe journey free from battery hassles. The battery is fully charged with the multimeter reads 12.6 volts and above.

car or at least the bonnet of the car in the shade. For best results in the hot and arid areas of the Middle East it is important to check the water level every morning before starting the engine. Check at every six hour intervals to ensure that the water level is sufficient, if the car has been parked under direct sunlight. Average battery life has become shorter as energy requirements have increased. Life span depends on usage; 6 months to 48 months, yet only 30% of all batteries actually reach the 48-month mark. There are still those who prefer the older batteries where the charge and life of the battery is extended with proper care and the water has to be refilled. In such batteries, called the lead acid battery (made of plates, lead and lead oxide various other elements are used to change density, hardness, porosity, etc. with a 35 per cent sulphuric acid and 65 per cent water solution. This solution

is called electrolyte which causes a chemical reaction that produce electrons) the water level can be kept constant with use of distilled water. Always ensure the water level in such batteries maintains the required level. Even with such batteries, once the distilled water is filled and the level maintained. it is important to use an electric charger to recharge the battery. Safety measures batteries:

handling

Remove all jewellery from hands, wear safety glasses that can be bought from any shop, and plastic gloves. Work away from open flames and no smoking, hydrogen gas that batteries make when charging is very explosive. Sulphuric acid, if it spills, can eat into any substance it comes in contact with, including human skin. However, it will not react with polyester or wool.

After ensuring the battery is fully charged, return it to the battery tray of the car. Use appropriate spanners to tighten the screw and then spray a thin layer of battery-terminal protectant. The protectant needs to be used once every eight to 10-days. This prevent flak or filth build up on the terminals. In hotter climates like the Middle East battery life is often shorter. The water inside the battery evaporates because of the external heat. Try always to keep the
