Closer home GAZ scours the market for some good vehicles to look at. The Lincoln Continental 2017 proved to be a statesman’s car with its more than average wheelbase and a medium price tag. The Porsche Cayman, the car for the speedster is not a beast that growls, but a gentle feline that can give its driver a good time with some speed.

GAZ caught up with Ahmed Shaikh, the master motorcycle modifier for want of another word. He shared his views on many issues and how he came about in this profession. In this November edition we bring to our readers the vintage car Pontiac Grand Am. Yes indeed vintage classics are more than a fad or even the deeper craze. One needs the bug to bite a little too hard to be in this section. In our end of magazine pages we discuss the nitty gritties of buying tyres as also helmets. It is important for any motorcyclist of motorist to know the basics on what factors to consider when making a purchase. In our sports news we look at the local events unfolding at the Bahrain International Circuit. It is that time of the year when people are beginning to move out.

DIMS’ 17 NEWS

Watch the supercars at the Boulevard of Dreams

Dubai: The Boulevard of Dreams - a dedicated supercars zone is expected to be a rendezvous for some of the world’s fastest and most expensive models at this year’s Dubai International Motor Show, which runs from November 14-18 November at Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC). Tens of thousands of car enthusiasts are expected to descend on the mega event. The supercars zone, one of the five specialised sectors at this edition of the auto show, is guaranteed to draw huge crowds, from serious car buyers to aspiring owners, petrolheads and carmad kids. “The Dubai International Motor Show has become the only destination for serious car buyers and general car enthusiasts. Here they see all the latest models and concepts that will be making noise and turning heads on roads around the world in the future,” said Trixie LohMirmand, Senior Vice President, Exhibitions & Events Management, DWTC. The MENA region is home to an ever-increasing number of high networth (HNWI)and ultra high net-worth individuals (UHNWI). A recent Knight Frank report says the number of UHNWIs in the region grew by 48 per cent from 2006 to 2016, with some 7,370 UHNWIs sharing a combined wealth of USD810 billion now calling the region home. The same report says that Dubai attracted 2,000 new-to-the-city HNWIs in 2015 and so it is little surprise that the emirate’s supercar segment continues

8

to move at a rapid pace, as evidenced by industry luminaries such as McLaren opening new showrooms in Dubai and across the region. The Middle East makes up 12 per cent of McLaren’s global sales. Andreas Bareis, Managing Director Middle East, Africa & Latin America for McLaren Automotive, said: “McLaren has been going from strength-tostrength in the Middle East. We opened a new showroom in Dubai earlier this year and in Beirut recently. Therefore, it makes sense for us to be present at the biggest motor show in the region. Our clients still enjoy visiting the motor show to see what’s new and the general public also enjoy getting a closer look at our supercars.” Bareis added, “New at Dubai International Motor Show this year will be our 570S Spider, with all the performance of the Coupé plus the extra exhilaration of open-air driving. We also have another two surprises, but more will be revealed at the show,” added Bareis. Eager to muscle in and court maximum attention at the Dubai International Motor Show is Italian automaker ICONA, which will unveil the world’s first handmade titanium supercar – the Vulcano Titanium, inspired by and made with the same materials as the world’s fastest aeroplane – the Blackbird SR-

71. The Vulcano Titanium is valued at a whopping $2.9 million. Teresio G. Gaudio, Chairman and CEO of ICONA, said: “The Dubai International Motor Show is an excellent opportunity to showcase our unique Vulcano Titanium supercar. We think that the style of this unique masterpiece will capture the discerning taste of a selected public. We are also ready to discuss personalised, unique one-offs with keen car collectors.” Other exhibitors in the sector eager to show that the Middle East is on track to producing its own eye-catching supercars include Rimac, which will showcase its Rimac Concept One – an

electric supercar - Prato and Shaali Motorsport, which will bring its UAEmade Shaali N360. The 2017 Dubai International Motor Show is open from 6.00 pm to 10.00 pm on Tuesday, November 14, 11.00 am to 10.00 pm on November 15; 11.00 am to 11.00 pm on November 16 and November 17 and from 11.00 am to 10.00 pm on November 18. Tickets for the 2017 Dubai International Motor Show are available online starting from AED 50, a 25 per cent saving. On-site tickets start from AED 65 for single-day entry or AED 100 for a two-day ticket, with children under 12 entering free. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by adults.

UAE: Cadillac’s Escala concept, to debut, at the 2017 Dubai International Motor Show (DIMS), amplifies the new design DNA of the New York car brand. The concept was introduced with the new CT6 and XT5 models, expected to be on display on the stand. The marque has also announced that its 2018 XTS Platinum will enjoy its regional debut at the DIMS (14-18 November). Fastest Rover to debut at DIMS ‘17

Bahrain: A new Range Rover Sport is expected to debut at the Dubai International Motor Show on November 14, 2017. The SVR delivers 575PS, making it the fastest to date. The 2018, British-designed, engineered and built Range Rover Sport, has an exterior that evolved to harmonise and modernise the design, making the Range Rover Sport look more dynamic without changing its character. At the front, the striking new design is enabled by intelligent Pixel-laser LED headlights, sitting alongside a redesigned grille and complemented by a new bumper with a more aggressive profile. Inside the cabin the new Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, named ‘Blade’ by its developers, is the most advanced ever created by Jaguar Land Rover and is truly state-of-the-art. Two highdefinition 10-inch touchscreens form the centrepiece of the minimalist cabin, blending a futuristic, elegant feel with an intuitive, engaging interface and unrivalled functionality. In-car connectivity is enhanced with up to 14 power points, including a domestic plug socket to keep laptops and other devices topped up. The introduction of the Jaguar Land Rover activity key also brings new levels of convenience to the Range Rover Sport, allowing customers

12

to lock and unlock their vehicle without the need to carry a key fob – ideal for outdoor pursuits. The new model has been enhanced with further technologies for greater comfort and convenience, with the addition of a gesture sunblind -- opened and closed by an advanced gesture control system that senses an occupant’s hand movement. Opening the blind is achieved by a rearward swipe in front of the rear view mirror, and forwards to close. An advanced tow assist takes care of the counter-steering required to position trailers accurately when reversing. The driver can guide the trailer into the

desired space using the rotary controller for the Terrain Response 2 system The pixel-laser LED headlights advanced technology provides greater luminance and intelligently blanks sections of LEDs to avoid dazzling oncoming drivers Customers looking for the ultimate performance SUV will relish the potent new SVR derivative, which takes the Range Rover Sport into new territory. The model boasts 575PS power, delivering the 0-100km/h sprint only in 4.5 seconds (0-60mph in 4.3 seconds), while bold design revisions and the increased use of carbon fibre construction make the new Range Rover Sport SVR more dramatic, faster and more agile than before.

Dubai: Jaguar XE SV Project 8, the most extreme performance Jaguar ever and the second collector’s edition vehicle from SVO will be displayed during the five day Dubai International Motor Show 2017, which begins on November 14. It is the latest high performance creation from Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division. The model will feature eight body colour choices – three eye-catching standard colours -- Fuji White, Narvik Black and Caldera Red – in addition to five enhanced SVO design options incorporating colours and finishes from the SVO premium palette: Valencia Orange, Velocity Blue, Meribel White, Verbier Silver and Corris Grey (satin matte). Personalisation of the car is permitted on a wide range of colours and finishes from the SVO premium palette range. Race-inspired decal packs, accentuating Project 8’s high-performance attributes are also available. It features the most highly tuned version of Jaguar Land Rover’s 5.0-litre Supercharged V8 petrol powertrain. The 600PS power unit, with Titanium Variable Active Exhaust, is complemented by Jaguar’s All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system. The motorsport-derived aerodynamics is expected to deliver a 322kph top speed and 0-100kph in 3.7sec, making it the fastest accelerating Jaguar yet. Project 8 will be the lightest V8 sedan

in the Jaguar range. The carbon fibre bumper with enhanced cooling ducts, vented carbon fibre bonnet, flared bodywork covering 20-inch forged aluminium alloy wheels, adjustable front splitter, flat underbody, rear carbon fibre bumper, rear diffuser and adjustable rear aerodynamic wing form modifications fundamental to the performance of this model. To ensure optimum performance on road or track, project 8 endows the XE’s double-wishbone front and integral link rear suspension with stiffer springs. It also boasts manually adjustable continuously variable dampers (giving a 15mm lower ride height for track use) and debuts a new carbon ceramic braking system. The model also has an industry-first use of Formula 1-style silicon nitride

ceramic wheel bearings on a road car, and incorporates a rear electronic active differential (EAD) with oil cooler – a first for XE. The high-performance theme continues inside, with subtle applications of gloss carbon fibre trim as well as Alcantara, on the rim of the Project 8 sport steering wheel, instrument binnacle and door cards. The eight-speed quickshift transmission can either be operated by aluminium paddle shifters behind the steering wheel or by a central pistolshift lever – another first for XE. Project 8 is also the first Jaguar to feature a dedicated track mode, which tailors driveline and stability control systems for circuit use, and sharpens both throttle and steering responses for ultimate precision and driver feedback.

New GMC offerings at Dubai show

Middle East – GMC has announced that it will showcase all-new 2018 Terrain and 2018 Yukon Denali at this year’s Dubai International Motor Show (14-18 November 2017). Visitors to the show will also be able to view a new special edition concept model, on display for the first time anywhere in the world. It is fitting that the Middle East’s leading motor show will host the global reveal of the new special edition. GMC can point to a long and rich heritage in the Middle East, the only region outside North America where it is marketed. The brand, affectionately known across the region as ‘Jims’, entered the market in the 1930s with 4x4 and 6x6 vehicles that were specifically developed for desert use. Its range of pick-up trucks, SUVs and crossover vehicles are renowned for their capability, innovation and engineering excellence. Sajed Sbeih, Head of Brand for GMC Middle East, said: “With GMC’s longstanding presence in the region, it was a logical step for us to choose to unveil this special edition concept at the Dubai International Motor Show. We’re pleased to be able to give visitors to the show a real ‘world first’, as well as ‘regional firsts’ including the all-new 2018 GMC Terrain and newly designed 2018 Yukon Denali.” A redesigned, second-generation version of GMC’s premium compact SUV, the all-new 2018 Terrain offers greater refinement and versatility and is packed with more standard and optional features and advanced safety technologies than ever before. The new styling signals the next chapter of the brand’s design language, evolving its

14

signature cues with stronger, sharper and more sculpted elements. The new turbocharged engines include a 2.0L unit offering stronger acceleration and a higher degree of performance. Also debuting at the show will be the 2018 Yukon Denali, featuring styling and trim enhancements, as well as a new, advanced 10-speed automatic transmission. Paired with the premium SUV’s 6.2L V-8 engine, this new gearbox enhances refinement with world-class shift smoothness, responsiveness and quietness, enabling a lower numerical top gear ratio and contributing to greater efficiency. “GMC’s rise as a premium brand is very much reflected by the striking design and confident stance of the all-new Terrain, and this new design language is set to

elevate the whole brand as it is applied across other models in the future,” added Sbeih. “At the same time, the Denali sub-brand continues to set the bar for GMC performance, technology and luxury, so the 2018 Yukon Denali is ideally placed to appeal to customers around the Middle East.” The Acadia range will complete the GMC line-up at the show, represented on the stand by the premium 2018 Acadia Denali. Also available as an AllTerrain model with enhanced off-road capabilities, the GMC Acadia crossover is aimed at the heart of the midsize segment and designed to offer great versatility and refinement with more advanced safety technology and a more efficient powertrain, along with a legacy of functionality and spaciou

Infiniti to unveil QX 50, QX30 at Dubai show

Dubai: Infiniti unveiled two vehicles that will premiere at the Dubai International Motor Show. The Infiniti Q50 and the Infiniti QX30, help the premium brand continue its product expansion story here in the region. Also awaiting unveiling is the executive sedan and the all-new premium active crossover. At Infiniti we seek to empower our customers on their journey and experience with us through our product offering as well as our forward looking technologies. The introductions of the Q50 as well as the QX30 will continue to deliver on this promise to our customers,î said Juergen Schmitz, Managing Director, INFINITI Middle East. The enhanced sports sedan retains its sleek proportions and athletic stance, while establishing greater visual differentiation between model versions, including the performance-inspired ëRed Sport 400í. Through the Red Sport 400 grade, Infinitiís designers have brought the model in line with its ëdesigned to performí ethos. Changes to the interior blend artistry with innovation, with stitching and the use of authentic materials further elevating the level of craftsmanship inside the Q50. The Infiniti InTouch Services bring the future of in-car connectivity to the interior, while the inclusion of the brandís ëspinal supportí seats ensures a comfortable space in which to spend time. Innovative technologies empower and support the driver, while giving a glimpse into the automotive future. The new Q50 is the first Infiniti vehicle to use the Driver Assist Technologies upon which all future autonomous drive support technologies

of the company will be based. Coinciding with the refreshed look of the new Q50 is the introduction of a new grade structure ñ Luxe, Sport, Blue Sport and Red Sport 400 ñ which sees differentiation in the look of the rangetopping sports grades. This has allowed the marque’s designers the opportunity to tailor different designs according to the attributes and character of the models within the range. The ëSportí grade adds performance-focused exterior design, while further enhancements and the most powerful engine appear exclusively in the ëRed Sport 400í grade. The Q50 delivers an empowering and rewarding drive thanks to innovative powertrains, including the awardwinning 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo engine from the new and exclusive ëVRí powertrain family in two states of tune; a range topping 400HP or 300HP. These engines were also recently named on the prestigious 2017 Wardís ë10 Best Enginesí list. As an entry to the segment Infinitiís 2.0 Litre Turbo Direct Injection engine is also available, delivering 208HP at 5,500 rpm. Created for a new generation of premium buyers appreciating category-defying design inside and out, the QX30 boasts a purposeful appearance that makes a bold visual statement ñ and joins the Q30 as part ofthe marque’s premium compact model line-up. Remaining true to the powerful and elegant design cues that guided the original QX30 concept, the carís highly sculpted exterior, unique crossover stance and asymmetric cabin design exemplify the car maker’s design-led

approach to product development. The model will hold a unique position in the segment, bridging the gap between premium compact rivals and larger crossover models. Its crossover-style versatility extends from unique design appeal and a wide range of comfort, convenience, safety and dynamic features, including intelligent all-wheel drive. Its elevated ride height over the Q30 and high-stability drivetrain will give confidence to drivers. The new model comes equipped with an intelligent all-wheel drive system. The drivetrain is able to send up to 50 per cent of the engineís power and torque to the rear axle to maintain traction on slippery surfaces and in inclement weather, enhancing a feeling of control and confidence when driving. For example, if a wheel slip is detected by sensors, braking is applied to the slipping wheel, while torque is sent to the gripping wheel for additional stability. Combined with the elevated ground clearance, the QX30ís drivetrain is engineered to deal with all conditions. The elevated dimensions make for a confident and relaxing drive, while ascribing to the carís versatile character. An overall height of 1,530mm (with standard roof rails) helps improve forward visibility over its rivals, aided by a slim A-pillar design, while the elevated ride allows for a higher hip point (1,324mm), improving ease of ingress and egress. The QX30 will be available with the 2.0L Turbo variants in an AWD configuration. The 2.0L Turbo engine delivers 208hp and 350Nm torque.

NX Turbo comes into Bahrain

Bahrain: The entire front fascia of the new Lexus 2018 NX Turbo, unveiled at the Lexus Showroom in Sitra, has been refreshed, with the upper portion of the grille and the front bumpers redesigned to more fluidly blend into the hood and front doors. The result is a sleeker overall shape and excellent aerodynamics. The rear end has also been refreshed, with the bumper cover now involving elements of the grille’s spindle motif, and broadened to enhance the vehicle’s wide stance and low-centre-of-gravity look. In addition, the NX’s revised taillights have been elongated, and the black garnish revised to better emphasize the L-shaped lenses. The NX 2.0-liter Turbo engine produces 235 hp and is powered by a D4-S injection system, which uses a combination of direct fuel injection and additional port fuel injectors, to ensure ample power and crisp responsiveness at all engine speeds. The sequential six-speed automatic transmission uses torque-demand control logic to calculate required engine torque to deliver quick response and exhilarating acceleration feel. The G-force artificial intelligence (G-AI) system enables more spirited driving by selecting the optimum gear and downshift p pattern in response to g force. The interior of the new NX has been reworked to exude a sportier nature and a more luxurious feel, with enhanced

26

control interfaces. Immediately noticeable is the larger available display on the centre dashboard, which has grown from 7 inches to 10.3 inches. Nearly all the controls and switches inside the NX, including the drive mode selector, shift knob and door handles, now have a metallic satin finish, enhancing the premium look and feel of the cabin. As in other Lexus models, the driver can choose preferred driving responses using the drive mode select dial on the center console. The system adjusts parameters for multiple systems, including throttle response and the power steering assist curve. The default setting is normal. Sport mode sharpens responses, and

ECO mode helps enhance more fuelefficient driving. Other features include reduced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), thanks to a combination of suspension tuning and the addition of strategically placed sound deadening within the vehicle’s body. The new NX also includes the brand’s innovative Lexus safety system + as standard, which integrates active safety technologies, such as the precollision system (PCS), dynamic radar cruise control system, lane departure alert (LDA) and automatic high beam (AHB). The new models are at the Ebrahim K. Kanoo showroom.

Italian yard Rossinavi has taken an order for a 52 metre yacht called Project Florentia, which will be built from a steel hull and aluminium superstructure.Hull number FR039, this new-build yacht will be launched in 2020 sporting exterior design by Giorgio & Stefano Vafiadis, while Carlo Colombo and the A++ Design studio will create the interior styling. The yard estimates a cruising speed of 13.5 knots. Federico Rossi, chief operating officer at Rossinavi, said: “Florentia is positioned in a market for people who appreciate yachts with balanced lines and traditional boating.”

Details of Project Florentia are few and far between at this stage, however the yard revealed that the superyacht staircase will be a key part of the interior design, bringing together warm colours, leather and light wood. What’s more, the owner’s suite will include a mirrored ring in the centre of the room to reflect light in all directions. Project Florentia has a 10.35 metre beam Accommodation is for up to 12 guests spread out across a spacious 700GT interior, while the crew quarters allows for a staff of up to 13 people. The engine installation

is undisclosed, but the hull has been designed around a cruising speed of 13.5 knots. Rossi adds that Project Florentia is part of a new wave of yachts over 50 metres and 500GT from Rossinavi - the first since the 70 metre flagship yacht High Power III (ex-Numptia) hit the water back in 2011. Other examples include the 70 metre King Shark, which is also due for completion in 2020. his news comes less than a month after the yard announced the sale of the 49.7 metre Project FR038, which is being designed by Luca Dini.

All aluminium superyacht Zephyr soon Italian yard Rossinavi has joined forced with Federico Fiorentino once again for a new 55 metre all-aluminium superyacht concept called Zephyr. The Milanese naval architect has drawn on his experience in racing and powerboat design to create an exterior that evokes the muscular bodywork of 1950s and 1960s sportscars. Zephyr would ride on the fast displacement XL500 platform developed by Van Oossanen Naval Architects, which stretches a 500GT interior over the maximum length possible for a smoother cruising experience. Accommodation is for up to ten guests split across five staterooms, while the crew quarters allow for a staff of up to nine people. The interior décor comes courtesy of Pisa-based interior design firm Pulina DNA, with an emphasis on transparency and reflective surfaces for a light and spacious atmosphere. Key features include a fold-

Hyundai gaining on global brands

Hyundai maintains its position among the top 40 valuable brands globally, for the third consecutive year, according to the latest best global brands report from Interbrand. It retained its place as the world’s 35th most valuable brand and sixth most valuable automotive brand, despite challenging conditions in many global markets. Interbrand ranks companies based on the financial balance sheets combined with marketing activities, while also reflecting each brand’s potential profit. The analysis assessed Hyundai’s brand value as growing to $13.2 billion for 2017 - a 5.1 per cent increase over the previous year. The ranking follows Hyundai sale of 4.86 million units annually worldwide. The report said the ranking follows a period of exponential growth for South Korea’s leading automotive manufacturer, with a fourfold increase in brand value since 2005 -- when its value in real terms was $3.5 billion. “Hyundai Motor aims to be a lifestyle brand rather than simply an automotive brand. We are thus building on our ‘Modern Premium’ brand direction and moving into new spaces that allow people to experience our brand value at every touchpoint,” said Wonhong Cho, Chief Marketing Officer at Hyundai Motor Company. The ranking is based on a combination of attributes. Each of these contribute to a brand’s cumulative value -- including

34

financial performance of branded products and services, the role the brand plays in influencing customer choice, and the strength of the brand in commanding a premium price or securing earnings for the company. The annual Interbrand Best Global Brands report identifies the 100 most valuable global brands, analysing the ways in which the strength of a brand benefits organizations, from delivering on customer expectations to driving greater economic value. “A key element of Hyundai’s sustainable growth in brand value was its ongoing commitment to the development of its vision for ‘future mobility’, in spite of tough market conditions,” said

Mike Rocha, Global Director of Brand Valuation for Interbrand. “Hyundai Motor is working incredibly hard to realize its vision for Future Mobility by developing affordable autonomous driving technology and connectivity for everyone, under its brand direction, ‘Modern Premium’.” In addition to maintaining its reputation for the highest quality, Hyundai also strengthened its global product portfolio, including the new-generation Azera and significant upgrades to the Sonata, both available in Africa and the Middle East and featuring the latest evolution of Hyundai’s unified design language. Internationally, the company

unveiled the Kona premium compact SUV and the i30N, the first model of the company’s high-performance N lineup. The i30N draws on Hyundai’s involvement in motorsport, in addition to demonstrating its desire to put thrilling driver experiences at the heart of new car development. In outlining its future direction, during the past year Hyundai also set out its blueprint to move into new automotive spaces, which incorporates the launch of 15 eco-friendly vehicles by 2020. The company is also advancing its research into affordable autonomous driving and connectivity technologies, through its future-focused Project IONIQ and openinnovation collaborations with external parties.

an interactive brand experience at the Hyundai Motorstudio in Goyang, South Korea. Other initiatives included ‘Shackleton’s Return’, a campaign following the grandson of legendary polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, as he explored Antarctica with a standard 2.2-litre diesel Santa Fe. Within two months of launching, the campaign exceeded 140

million views on YouTube, the highest number of views for an automotive campaign. In the United States, a promotion for the American football Super Bowl showed military personnel stationed in Poland experiencing the match with their families at home, using satellite technology and 360-degree immersive pods to transport them to the stadium. A video of the initiative attracted more than 41 million views.

“Hyundai is adding excitement to our brand, both for the products we have now and for those we will be bringing to the market in the future,” said Hyundai’s Head of Operations for Africa and the Middle East, Mike Song. “We are wellestablished as a dependable brand, and the increasing value of our name shows that we are also transformed into a desirable brand.” Beyond its innovations in new products, Hyundai continues to grow its brand identity through high-profile marketing campaigns. These include long-term sponsorships of major art installations at the Tate Modern in London, and at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and also the opening of

Try for an enriched road feel Porsche Cayman S

36

37

COVER STORY

The hunched rat, the Porsche Cayman wore an eye-catching turquoise colour, making it look more a collector’s item than one to be driven on the road. What is particular about the new model? Porsche has given a new lease of life to the 718 range extending it to the Cayman with retaining the moniker. The engines have been enriched -- from naturally-aspirated flat sixes to smalldisplacement flat-four turbocharged units. Just the first look and the wheelbase makes one feel confident of riding it, though it is a Porsche. The 2,475 mm wheelbase was quite a comfort turning around the slalom with an absolute g-force giving the comfort that the car is almost crouched on the ground and in no mood to misbehave unless pushed to deliberately. The 4,379 mm height on a vehicle with 1,801mm width to the discerning eye is the first sight of a safe journey. Slide into the front seat and push the key into the ignition slot, the engine purr at the start of the ignition is very Porsche, but never be put off by the oft-heard sound. The price mentioned without any customization is BHD 25,920. Push the engine to life and the four cylinders quietly come alive with a mild growl. The hand brake is at the left hand side at the bottom. Release it and the smooth-curve turns at the beginning of the journey are a deception for anyone

38

with a faint-heart. It is a gentle thunder coming out on the roads. Capable of making a displacement of 2.5 cubic centimeter, this mid-engine rat is quite an object of revere hitting the streets, what with the other motorists giving way. The power of this Cayman is 350 horses – quite a stunner for this pint-sized dreamer.

On a quiet road with absolutely no distraction, the car was true to its form producing all of 420 Nm at 1,900 revolutions per minute. And that is quiet a start. However, as we always keep saying the often seen traffic lights, the presence of the hunched bumps, the high-density traffic and other obstructions rarely offer one the chance to break free into the freedom one desires.

39

COVER STORY The car pushes zero to 100 kilometres per hour in about 4.4 seconds and Porsche counts it as ordinary since even the base models of Cayman get there. In the Sport mode of driving it was a tard faster at 4.2 seconds. In gear acceleration on the Cayman from 80 to a 120 kilometres was a quickie 2.8 seconds and yes it did show the results. The engine mated to a seven speed, rear wheel drive and the pleasures make one want to go on. Although the car has a top speed of 300 kilometres a good drive could not scale those highs, least of all using the pads for the manual gear change. It is an urge to use but not one of practical purpose, for as I found, that thrill lasts only a very few minutes. The chassis delivered abundant grip on all the drives that I undertook. The cornering when attempted at 100 miles per hour did not yield any alarming signals. On the contrary, it felt easy. The manual gearbox gives the engine a better chance to demonstrate the breadth of its midrange prowess. But I doubt if anybody is going to enjoy it till one crosses the Bahrain border and moves into Saudi Arabia’s eastern coast. When making a buy it is important to decide between the six-speed manual and the optional seven-speed automatic. The luggage compartment for this sports car was roomy enough to say since it takes 150 in the front and 275 in the rear. The fuel tank has a capacity for 641 litres. There is a linearity to the engine’s response. Thus it is worthy of considering

40

an S model with fewer options versus loading a base Cayman. In the S version the 2.5-liter’s torque curve makes a straight line to its higher but similarly broad peak output. The ideal power curve rises on a constant upward slope, with each additional 100 rpm, more so when accompanied by exactly the same portion of added power. The Cayman S responds to throttle inputs superbly, delivering that justright sensation. Modern electronics is the one factor that can help manage this feeling much better than in the old

days of cables and levers. That said, it is important to say that it requires finetuning to make the controls, the engine, and the transmission programming all come together, and Porsche clearly has been painstakingly attentive here. The Cayman, in terms of the ride is one car that stays and obeys the driver’s move. The car, though, is a good contender for bespoke enhancement. Although the turquoise blue is a rarity, there is no stopping the owner on what he or she would prefer.

Safe and stately in appearance Lincoln Continental

TEST DRIVE

The Lincoln Continental –I must say is a much loved brand in the US since the name is that of one of the most loved and respected of American presidents. The urge to get behind the wheels itself was an excitement. But first things first, the car has the looks of a statesman, what with the 201.4 inches of exterior from the headlamp to the tail lamp making one feel a little elated. The name Lincoln Conti – a slang for the Continental – conjures up the American glamour. The BD22,500 front wheel boasts 117.9 inch wheelbase and the fact that one is riding on 19 tyres gives both the driver and the passenger the confidence and the comfort that the car is indeed balanced and safe. The front sports the traditional Lincoln grille. The dynamic adaptive HID headlamps that swivel with the movement of the steering, are standard with the Lincoln. Turning of the steering and the speed of the car as the turn is taken lets the beam pattern sweep the road as also its direction. The impact is that the driver gets a wider view. Drive in the thickness of the night and the adaptive full LED headlamps as also the LED reflector elements are activated or deactivated depending solely on the vehicle speed and steering wheel position. When the driving speed is in the cruise position the reflectors are marginally activated or deactivated to widen the

TEST DRIVE low-beam pattern and help find the pdestrians as also other objects on the road. Open the doors using the high-mounted handle and one is treated to the roomy interior, a genuine touch of American class. The bucket seats are ample enough to take a driver and a passenger with a well endowed posterior. The same is the feeling at the rear – with enough space for three well-endowed passengers. By allowing drivers to stay on the road with the Head-up Display, especially in Bahrain where humps are all too soon and placed in positions least expected the driver is able to respond to the road ahead easier. The large and convenient display gives the driver ample time to choose what menu to bring up -- from standard driving information to adaptive cruise control settings, lane keeping information and more. The Plus digital light projection, according to the manufacturer (another industry first for Lincoln), allows for the display to be visible even in ambient lighting conditions). Open the hood and one is treated to transversely mounted V-6 Lincoln engines, and a front wheel drive. The engine in the Bahrain version is a 3.7-litre. The engine is a 305 horses puller and capable of 400 lb-ft of torque (quite comfortable by Bahrain standards).

The car had luxurious rear-seat climate controls, self-cinching doors, twin sunroofs, and blind-spot and lane-departure warning systems, standard features on most cars of the day. What did I like about the seating as I pushed the engine to life? The seat adjustments were on the door panel. A vertical seat height and level adjuster and a horizontal lumbar supporter, activation of which made one feel like heaven when driving. The back seats though are straight stretch. Despite the tall figure of the driver and the long legs there was plenty of leg room at the back, unlike in other cars. I must confess the engine sound once the ignition switch was depressed was not very welcoming. For a car that had the looks to kill I was expecting an almost silent start. The dashtop of the Continental feels good and different from the sea of plastic one is so accustomed to seeing on the cars. Here is one with a good decent cover that ensures the eyes have something soothing to look at. For the price that it is offered at, the interior seemed swathe and grand. Once the engine got moving the Continental came into its own. Driving on the streets of Bahrain is nothing much to boast about because high speeds and

sweeping take-offs are impossible with the 120 kilometres per hour speed limit and cameras all around waiting to catch an offender. In addition, the traffic lights and the presence of humps every 50 meters didn’t leave me with much to drive out on, except on the main highway. Unless the owner is one making his way to Saudi Arabia every day, the super power and speeds are just dampers to one’s soul. The urge to push the gas could indeed result in too many dinars going to the traffic department. Along the smooth and medium drive that I had, the engine behaved and sounded great. The agility and flexibility of the abrupt turns was indeed wonderful. The 3.7 litre was pretty smart from the start and stayed very much under control. The six speed gear box mated to the engine helped push the torque to decent levels. The boot of the Continental was very spacious enough indeed – voluminous enough to carry a family’s large boxes off to the airport. It can take off from 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds, and climbed from start to 100 in 12.8 seconds. The standing quarter mile is 13.8 seconds. The cruise adjuster and the three levels of driving were nothing new since they come standard in all cars.

CLASSIC

The glistening golden hue of the evening sun, pouring its radiance on the gliding wings of the sea gulls coming to roost on the wooden fishing dhows moored at Bu Hala fisherman’s cove in Muharraq, find a new object of interest to flash on -- a shining patch of red almost on the edge of absorbing all the rays. The sun seems interested in looking at his new visitor. Who is this new visitor? A 1973 6.5 litre Pontiac Grand Am -- a worthy successor to the Pontiac blazer Trans Am. The name Grand Am itself is derived from two other earlier traditions in this line up, Grand signifying Grand Prix luxury and Am for Trans Am performance. The 1973 model, a midsize coupe, was introduced in 1972. A brief look into the history of this car points to the Grand Am at some point of time being a best seller for General Motors. The 1973 model was perhaps the front runner in its lineage, since the company history points to other versions being produced in 1975, and from 1978 to 1980. The Grand Am, based on the GM A platform, was built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac’s main assembly plant. The conceptualisation of Grand Am resulted in major design change on the platform, resulting in the elimination

50

of pillarless hardtops due to proposed Federal rollover standards, but with frameless windows similar to that of a hardtop. No convertibles were produced due to the rollover standards (that never were enacted). In addition to Federal emissions regulations, new safety standards required a 5 mph (8.0 km/h) impact-resistant front bumper and a 2.5 mph (4.0 km/h) impactresistant rear bumper, which increased to 5 mph (8.0 km/h) for 1974. The car was designed as America’s answer to the sport and luxury models produced in Europe. The red coloured sun baiter, we found was

a 2-door Colonnade coupe. GAZ learns that there is also a four-door colonnade present. The Grand Am when introduced, could be had with a standard 2-bbl 400 cu in (6.6 Litre) V8 engine with a single exhaust producing 170 hp (127 kW; 172 PS) -- hence the badge at the rear proclaiming 6.5 litre. An optional four bbl version of the same engine with a single exhaust producing 200 horses (149 kW; 203 PS) was available mated to a four speed manual transmission. All engines on the different versions were available with a turbohydramatic 400 automatic transmission as standard

equipment. The 1973 version had a four-speed manual transmission with the 400/4-bbl engine. However, this was not popular. Among the specialities of the 1973 Grand Am style we cover here are a unique flexible urethane front fascia center nose, also called the Endura nose. In the event of minor collisions, the Endura nose could be squeezed and could return to its original shape. This has to be factored in with the new energy-absorbing bumpers, six grille openings all with vertical bars, round front turn signals with a cross-hair design, horizontal rear tail lights, and chrome rear bumper. The ‘73 Grand Am featured a radial tuned suspension (RTS) as standard equipment. Standard equipment on this red sunshine baiter also included radial-ply tyres. The tyres on this red Grand Am came from Saudi Arabia and the company he uses is radial Cooper Cobra. The shock absorbers came from Pliacell. The front and rear sway bars also came as standard. At the time of creating this red beauty, the Grand Am was one of only three GM cars to have standard radial tires and appropriate suspension tuning.

INTERVIEW

‘No bike is superlative if there is no buyer’

Ahmed Shaikh, the star motorcycle modifying entrepreneur, came into this field more out of passion. He was a banker for 15 years and a strategic manager for a medical equipment company. In an exlusive interview given to Gulf Auto Zone (GAZ) Shaikh said that his love for motorcycle repairing began when at the age of eight he had a 70 cc Honda and it broke down. Left with no way to get it going, he used his pocket money to buy the tools and then he tinkered with the parts and managed to get it going. From the modest beginnings he went to modify other motorcycles like the Harley Davidsons. Today he owns the Chrome World, perhaps the first company to do chrome spraying in the Middle East. He said the urge to learn took him to the US where he mastered the art of modifying motor cycles. Today he has his own foundry and turns out his own tools and sheet metal to motor cycle parts. The man, his passion and the purpose of being in this hobby turned industry, he shared with GAZ. Reasons for looking at modifying motorcycles: As a young eight year old I was fortunate to own a motorcycle. That was way back in 1984. Even from then my desire was to learn the nitty gritties of how the engine functioned and how the machine thumped. I was driven by the desire to learn, because I was in love with it all. At times when my motorcycle developed some trouble I would think of how to rectify the trouble myself. As a young lad I did not have the money to take the machine to a garage. It was like a fire burning inside of me as my machine sat there idle. It was at these times that I resolved to know every single part in my motorcycle by heart. My urge for the functioning and the parts initiated me to learn the modification using the simplest hand tools ever. Initiation into this highly glamourous and dangerous business of motorcycle modification: The business of motorcycle modification is both highly glamorous and equally if not even more dangerous. It is not something very easy. This is a task that calls for a lot of experience, skills, continuous development of knowledge and skills, precision and unending thirst for knowledge. After I got involved in this activity I wanted to build a strong solid name. I dreamt of becoming strong in this field. I joined Penn Foster College in USA to study motorcycles – the engineering of manufacturing. This became my fourth scientific specialisation degree

54

and I finished with a bachelors in this.

Your modifications – do they go into changing the engine and its parts without affecting the working or are you able to change the overall functioning of the engine so it leaves the rider feeling proud and elevated? I am of course not just into changing the skin and grafting it to make it look beautiful. I look at the overall mechanics involved in creating a product that makes the customer happy. That also means

that the upgrade and all changes have to be in line with the rules of international roads and safety inspections. Satisfaction from this line of activity. Some examples of the high points and below low points you have seen as a bike modification expert: The art and science of motorcycle modification and upgrade are very fulfilling and also prone to many errors. Even when I was happy with what I created, there were instances when I saw many faulty and unsafe modifications being carried out. I have seen many motorcycles both here in the Middle East as also overseas too, where entire processes were wrong, leading to dangerous and fatal results. Each assignment is filled with risks. A certain level of certification is required to avoid the dangerous errors. Garage personnel need to be certified and authorized to carry out any modification. To trust a garage mechanic who claims to be able

to fix motorcycles is not just dangerous, but an unwarranted fatality cause as also monetary drain. One needs to be clear about the capacity of that mechanic to modify and also qualified to account on the expenses. A good mechanic will always weigh safety above everything else when carrying out modifications. The process of automobile modification needs skills, creativity, challenge, motivation and a dream. The formal training ground and the person who inspired you: Talk about inspiration and I will look up to God. It is His gift to me. The great God above when He creates a person, puts a hero and the inherent potentials to achieve that heroism. The person has to hunt within and find that gift. That done it is on the person to build on the gift. The need is to focus and sharpen the tools needed to operate that talent. In my case and those like me the gift to design is in our DNA. Those with my skills don’t need to go copying. We can create our own design. Copying does not create. When we create we make our customers different. People love to be treated different and elevated. The more one can create and at that, create what is never seen, then you never stop amazing your clients. Motorcycles that are a modifier’s dream and those that are a challenge even to the expert. Every motorcycle is a modifier’s delight. There is a reason for saying so. The urge is always to study every bit of the machine, do the homework on how to change the exterior and how to create a machine, including its engine, that will take the rider and give that person sublime pleasure in riding under all conditions and in all terrains. It is important to know the terrains on which the motorcycle is meant to be used, prior to even launching on designing it. The nitty gritties to the minutest detail needs to be looked into. Only a designer who can build based on the terrain and the climatic conditions can give a motorcycle that makes the rider comfortable. Living as you do in an Islamic world your thoughts have an Islamic bent of mind. The thought process that drives you to individually re-create each of the motorcycles you get: Yes indeed, living in an Islamic world my thoughts have an Islamic bent of mind. However, no religion wants any person to live a narrow minded person. The Quran has all the sciences I need to read and learn in the creation of newer and fancier designs. Islamic culture is full of arts. That aside, when we pursue a hobby the language of all who speak it is

the same, never mind what the roots are or even the religious bend. Every person with a hobby follows it out of a love and passion. It is important to be able to present a collection that can amaze people. In my hobby the urge is to stand out as unique from the noise. Every motorcycle I get – be it classic or antique or even the most modern, the challenge is to build it into a work of art so high above the normal that even the owner of the motorcycle is numb to his bones on the final product. Challenges faced technologically as a modifier of motorcycles: No challenge is a challenge for those who keep abreast of the latest and look forward. Important is to remain in the loop of professionals engaged in the same activity. There exist plenty of fora and the fraternity is large where one can find advice on any subject. Researching on any and every subject, whether it be valid immediately or later is an essential must. As a motorcycle modifier and one with a rich harvest, tell us the highest levels of modifications you have done, where you have put your creativity to the highest. Also look at the lowest point where you were not at all satisfied and hoped you could have re-created that piece: Every day for sure offers something new to learn. Every challenge opens

more and more thirst for the unknown. Solving these issues opens channels for self improvement. A positive bent of mind and a creative urge ensure that the highest levels of modifications have ever been scaled. In the same tone, every failure and low is a mirror to the yet unknown. I must say with confidence there is not a single part of the engine or the machine that I have yet to touch. Modification of motorcycles can be for Show, Performance enhancement and Everyday Fantasia. The thought process that goes into modification in each of these areas: The process of modifying or enhancing two wheelers is a confluence of all the sciences. An intimate knowledge of each element of science is an essential must to be an adept. The physical sciences relate the chassis, suspensions, and the wheels, as all the motorcycles controls. Metallurgy is the science that deals with the motorcycle body. The importance of mechanical

sciences is in relation to engines and transmissions. Electrical science and electronics is where all the wiring and control panels and the motorcycles ECM come to bear. Into chemistry comes painting and plating and composition of wires. Your personal best in this art and science combined and your satisfaction with the current levels: I pay my respect to every person in this brotherhood – from the oldest and the masters to those who have just walked into this field. I cannot point to any work and say that is my best, because the worth of my work is judged by the person buying the motorcycle. If I have to point to a particular piece that I have done, but that has no takers then my claim has no meaning. The worth and beauty of what we create is decided by that end customer. Their patronage and the feeling they convey is what keeps us all going. That said, every builder has his own flavours, same as every prayer. It depends on the situation and the gravity. Your credibility and proof of it: I am indebted to the Almighty God for all my achievements. I have been a winner since 2004 and the credit for it all goes to the people who bought my motorcycles and put my signature on it. I was able to draw crowds in the GCC, Middle East and the USA to my works and their feedback has been very warm – evident from the sales of every single piece that I have produced. I feel elated that I am invited by Custom Show Emirates next year to represent Middle East in the sector. The task given there is to build a masterpiece that will be judged and appreciated – from scratch to the finished product in only three days. Another is the tour to VS a motorcycle builder from Europe Switzerland.

BMC riding season sets off

The Bahrain Motorcycle Club (BMC) began its 2017 rides, signifying the beginning of season. The club comprises riders and well wishers who have come together for the cause of riding. What began as a collection of friends with moorcycles coming together for riding and creating awareness on safe riding and charities in 2004, is now a 300 member club said a senior member. It is among the few registered riding clubs. “We are registered under Bahrain’s Ministry of Youth and Sport,” he added. “This is not to mean there are only as many in Bahrain. Some of the motorcycle riders who had other plans got those who thought on the same lines together and they have their own clubs. There are many such clubs, he added. “We have started the riding season after lying low due to the summer season,” he said. Bahrain summers are not the best for riding, he added. During this season which comes to an end with the onset of summer ins 2018, the club plans many activities, he added. There is a plan to showcase all aspects of the club and the different categories that make the club. One group is the cruising bikes. A second section of the club is the moto cross. A third is the drag racing section, where those who care to be a part of it take part. It is held at the Bahrain International Circuit, he added. The drag racing event is generally a quarter mile event. BMC, he said, also promotes circuit racing, more like the motoGP in the western world, he added. The super bike riders get together and that becomes another

BMC NEWS event, he added. “In addition we also have the performance riders. They are the ones who perform the stunts on the motorcycles -- including wheelies. These bikers as they are called, perform stunts on normal street motorcycles. Asked about the formalities for new members to join, he said it is important to have a riding licence and a motorcycle, in addition to having the urge to drive safe. The fee is only BD20 per year. The benefits are many, he added. The club, he added, conducts programmes that will foster the spread of safety in motorcycle riding as also the safety rules that govern both motorcyclists and motorists. “When the motorists look at bikers they see us as a nuisance. They have a valid reason for it. There are many riders who do not know much about the safety and

58

laws governing biking. They give this fun activity a bad name. We are trying to inculcate in the motorists the respect for bikers and the need to cooperate with us. When motorists and bikers join hands, the number of accidents will see a steep decline,” he added. In addition to all these, the club also joins the societies in social awareness -- such as promoting breast cancer awareness, the society for the handicap, society for those affected by autism and such others. When the bikers take up these initiatives it makes an impact he added. When many motorcycles descend on a venue it creates an urge among the people of that place. They conglomerate and this helps spread awareness. Looking at the programmes in the pipeline for the year, he enumerated the

plans wit a trip to the UAE being among the top items on the agenda. “We have sought the permission of the Saudi Causeway authorities to permit the movement of our motorcycles across the causeway into Saudi Arabia and then into the UAE. We are waiting for them to sanction. Should it not happen then we will tow the bikes and take it across. The BMC is also organising a ride into Kuwait in January or February. Our ride will be in line with the anniversary of Kuwait’s liberation and national day. Thereafter there will be a ride into Jordan’s Amman -- called the Amman rally,” he said. Asked about the expenses involved, he said, the events find corporate sponsors and the needs are not very large. So it is that there is not much of a hesitation, he added...

Toyota to raise pitch at Bahrain 6-Hours

Toyota Gazoo Racing competing in its home race in Japan, earned a one-two finish in an eventful and rain-affected 6 Hours of Fuji. The team comprising Sebastien Buemi, Anthony Davidson and Kazuki Nakajima, battled the odds at the seventh round of the nine-meeting season to claim the victory. The result earned them their third race win of 2017 in their no. 8 TS050 Hybrid. It was also Toyota’s fifth victory in six events at Fuji Speedway. The 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) inches closer to the season-ending Bapco 6 Hours of Bahrain on November 17 and 18.

Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Jose Maria Lopez in the no. 7 car took second place on a day that the TS050 Hybrid showed its strong performance in wet conditions. Rain intensified and fog descended on the track, causing several interruptions to the race. The heavy wet conditions and differing fuel strategies removed any advantage during safety cars, the final order of the podium was unpredictable throughout. And with the 75 per cent mark approaching, after which full World Championship points would be awarded, more heavy fog came and another safety car was called.

“This a great result for the team and also for our home fans here at Fuji; thanks to them for such great support, especially considering the weather,” said Buemi. Neel Jani, Andre Lotterer and Nick Tandy of Porsche took the final place on the overall podium. All three were also the top three amongst LMP1 cars. The LMP2 class was won by the trio of Julien Cana, Nicolas Prost and Bruno Senna of Vaillante Rebellion driving an Oreca/Gibson. The LMGTE Pro category was claimed by James Calado and Alessandro Pier Guidi of AF Corse driving a Ferrari. Thomas Flohr, Francesco Castellacci and Miguel Molina of Spirit of Race, driving a Ferrari, won the LMGTE Am category. The WEC now heads to the penultimate round of the season, the 6 Hours of Shanghai on November 5. In Bahrain, tickets are available now at BD10 apiece for the twoday extravaganza, which will feature both top-class racing and off-track entertainment. The weekend will also see more racing thrills in addition to the the WEC. The support programmes are the MRF Challenge, the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East and the World Series Formula V8 3.5. New F1 engine plans thrashed out

Formula 1 teams met with the FIA, the commercial rights holder and potential new manufacturers in Paris to discuss the objectives for the new engine rules that will be introduced for the 2021 season. The bosses have revealed details of the 2021 engine plans that were presented to teams. Work will continue for another 12 months on the details of the new engine specification, and the FIA said that the design and development of the new power units will not be possible until that process is complete – ensuring that F1’s existing manufacturers will continue working on their current engines through 2018. The proposal for 2021 includes keeping the current 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid engine, but running it at 3000rpm higher “to improve the sound”. In order to try to simplify the internals of the power unit, the MGU-H will be removed, and several prescriptive design parameters will be introduced to “restrict development costs and discourage extreme designs and running conditions”. These will include internal and external parameters, with the latter allowing for what the FIA described as “a plug-and-play engine/chassis/ transmission swap capability”. A single turbo with dimensional constraints and weight limits will be mandated, while a standard energy store will be introduced alongside control electronics, which have long been standard in F1, said F1 News.

62

The MGU-K will be made more powerful, with a focus on manual driver deployment of the additional power, similar to the way KERS was used when it was first introduced into F1 in 2009.This feature will also give drivers the option to save up energy over several laps to increase the tactical elements involved in racing. There will also be an investigattion into tighter fuel regulations and limits on number of fuels used. An FIA statement added that “during the remaining part of 2017 and 2018, the FIA and F1 will also work with the teams to establish power unit test and development restrictions as well as other cost containment measures”. F1 sporting boss Ross Brawn said: “The 2021 power unit is an example of the future way the FIA as regulators, F1 as commercial right holders, the teams and the manufacturers as stakeholders will

work together for the common good of the sport. “The proposal presented today was the outcome of a series of meetings which took place during 2017 with the current teams and the manufacturers who showed their interest to be part of the pinnacle of motorsport. “Also, we’ve carefully listened to what the fans think about the current power unit and what they would like to see in the near future with the objective to define a set of regulations which will provide a powertrain that is simpler, cheaper and noisier and will create the conditions to facilitate new manufacturers to enter Formula 1 as powertrain suppliers and to reach a more levelled field in the sport.” A series of meetings will now commence with all interested parties to develop the proposal in what the FIA described as “the spirit of the widest possible cooperation”.

Nissan in Formula E racing from 2018-19

Racing championship gives Nissan, the first Japanese brand to join, a platform for its Nissan Intelligent Mobility message Yokohama: Nissan will become the first Japanese automotive brand to compete in the all-electric FIA Formula E racing championship starting in 2018. The move to be a part of the growing Formula E series gives Nissan a highly visible global platform from which to spread the message of Nissan Intelligent Mobility – the company’s three-pillar strategy to redefine how its vehicles are driven, powered and integrated into society. “As the ultimate expression of the thrill of instant acceleration and agile handling that’s at the heart of Nissan zeroemission driving, the company is going to electrify the Formula E championship,” said Daniele Schillaci, executive vice president of global marketing and sales, zero-emission vehicles and battery business, and chairman of Nissan’s management committee for Japan, Asia and Oceania. “It will be the first Japanese brand to enter this growing championship, bringing our long history of motorsports success to the Formula E grid. It will give us a global platform for bringing our pioneering Nissan Intelligent Mobility strategy to a new generation of racing fans.” The company cemented its position as the leading mass-market zero-emission brand with last month’s unveiling of the new Nissan LEAF. The second generation of the fivedoor all-electric vehicle is packed with ingenious technology that embraces the early steps of advanced driver assistance. The new LEAF replaces the firstgeneration model, which pioneered accessible zero-emission mobility with

64

its launch in 2010. Nissan has sold more than 280,000 LEAFs globally, making it the world’s best-selling electric vehicle. LEAF customers have driven more than 3.5 billion zero-emission kilometers combined. “Nissan’s DNA is rich in innovation in electric mobility, not to mention a long history of success in motorsports,” added Schillaci. “It makes sense that we bring these two core elements together by competing in Formula E.” Launched in 2014, the FIA Formula E championship is a global racing series where teams and manufacturers compete with all-electric powertrains on street circuits set up in major urban centers around the world. “To have a name like Nissan coming on board is a momentous day for the series,” said Alejandro Agag, the founder & CEO of Formula E. “Not only is it great to welcome a new manufacturer to the Formula E family – it’s great to see our first Japanese manufacturer entering the frame, showing truly how global the electric revolution is. Japan is a country

at the forefront of new technologies, with one of the biggest followings of Formula E. The shift toward sustainable mobility is in motion, and it’s unstoppable. I look forward to seeing the Nissan logo adorned on the new-look cars for season five.” Nissan will compete from season five, which is expected to begin in late 2018, when the all-electric championship will introduce new chassis and battery specifications. The company will work with its partner Renault to leverage expertise and development already available, in keeping with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi automotive partnership’s focus on collaboration and maximizing synergies to boost competitiveness. Season four of Formula E begins this December and runs until July. The global championship visits key venues including Hong Kong, Berlin, Paris, New York and Montreal. Further information about Nissan’s participation will be available closer to season five.

FFF Racing aims high on Blancpain GT

The FFF Racing by ACM and the Chinese-based team certainly intend to wrap up the Blancpain GT Series Asia in style this coming weekend at the season finale, at Zhejiang Circuit in China. Alberto Di Folco and Aidan Read team up again in the #1 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 in the Silver class, while Zhu Junhan and Lin Yue will again compete in the Am-class in the #2 Lamborghini. With ten straight points finishes, the Silver-pairing are fifth in the standings, while victory last time out at Shanghai saw Junhan and Yue very much move into championship contention with just ten points covering the top three in the title race and 50 points still available. “We have had a good season with both cars at the sharp end of the classes, especially in the last round where we took the Am win and also lead the race outright for a period with the #1 car,” said FFF Racing Team Owner Sean Fu Songyang. “This is a new venue for us and it will be quite a challenge as it has both some long fast straights, but also much of the lap is so tight and twisty. We’ll aim to finish the GT Asia style with a win and perhaps we can even take the Am title...” The team will also field two cars in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia series, the final round of the Asia leg ahead of the World Finals next month at Imola. It’s an unchanged line-up with Carrie Schreiner and Armaan Ebrahim in the #50 Pro-

Am car, while Jack Bartholomew and Richard Goddard will again run in the #5 Pro-entry. Schreiner and Ebrahim got their partnership off to a strong start in Shanghai with a podium position, while Bartholomew and Goddard are also looking to build on their strong form in what was also their first race together as teammates.

Good helmets save lives Motorcycle riding has for decades been a symbol of a rebellious or freespirited lifestyle. While many riders love that aspect of their bikes, safety and responsibility are critical in order to continue to enjoy your time out on the roads. While motor cycle riding is full of excitement, motorcyclists are much more likely to experience a deadly accident while riding than those driving a car. Wearing a helmet is an important aspect of motorcycle riding. GAZ looks at what constitutes a good helmet. Helmets come in several shapes, many sizes, and nearly infinite colors. Choosing the best option can seem like a daunting task, but there are a few ways to break down the process of purchasing the best helmet possible. First look at the protection features. All helmets should include four basic components that make up their protection features. these include the outer shell. The outer-most layer of the helmet is usually made of fiberreinforced composites, which will allow the material to contract during a hard impact. That will help lessen the blow of the force before it reaches your head. Impact-absorbing liner is the second aspect. Usually made of Styrofoam or similar material, this layer continues to absorb shock and deflect

66

the power of a hard hit away from your head. The comfort padding is another aspect. This is the layer that touches your head. It helps for comfort, but also ensures the helmet fits snuggly on your head. The retention system is just another area of importance. Also known as a chin strap, this piece will ensure the helmet stays on the head in the event of a crash. When selecting a helmet, make sure it meets minimum safety standards by looking for a DOT sticker or a Snell sticker, which represent the

seals of approval from the United States Department of Transportation and the Snell Memorial Foundation, respectively. Both organizations will run thorough tests for impact (the helmet’s shock absorbing capacity), penetration (how well the helmet withstands hitting a sharp object), retention (how well the chin strap can stay fastened without breaking) and peripheral vision (a rather tough testing area. To pass, a helmet must allow minimum side vision of 105 degrees on each side.) A helmet is not just protection. Wearing a helmet also has much to do with comfort features. Most helmets full-face cover. This design does what the name suggests, covering the full face and head. It typically includes a movable face shield to protect the eyes, as well as a chin strap. It is worn by riders on sports motorcycles and race drivers. The three-quarter/ open-face helmet, which is similar to the full-face type, but does not include a movable face shield. It’s recommended to buy a snap-on face shield or goggles that can withstand hard impact when purchasing this helmet type. It is generally seen worn

by the police and others who do not take a head long trauma. The shorty half-helmet. Simply protects the top of the head. This type of helmet is not typically recommended for motorcycle riders. To ensure comfort, try your helmet on before buying it. Getting the right fit will not only help with your comfort level, but also with your safety. We also look at the sizes that need to be considered when the selection is being made. Getting a properly sized motorcycle helmet is more involved than guessing “Small,” “Medium,” or “Large.” In general, a brand new helmet should feel slightly tight, coming into contact with most of your head and the sides of your face, but not putting too much pressure on any specific area. Once it is worn for a while, it should be “broken in” and adjust to the specific shape of your head, but it should never become loose. To find the right size for a start, grab a tape measure and get the measurements for the largest circumference of the head, which should be just above your eyebrows and above ears.

face helmet. While wearing the helmet, some simple preliminary tests need to be caried out to ensure helmet will protect the head. These tests include moving your helmet from side to side. Do this while it is securely fastened. The skin should move as the helmet is moved, with an even amount of pressure being placed on your entire head. Try rolling the helmet forward off the head. Do this with the chin strap securely fastened. One should not be able to pull the helmet off. Take the helmet off. See if the head feels sore anywhere and check for red spots on the forehead. These can indicate pressure points on the helmet that

could become problematic after a long ride. The helmet maintenance includes replacing the current helmet if it was involved in a crash or if it was dropped and think it’s damaged. An old helmet needs to be replaced. Always clean it only with mild soap and avoid any petroleum-based cleaning products, which can cause the outer shell to decompose. Keep the face shield clean and replace the face shield if it gets scratched. Store the helmet in a flat, secure area. Never keep the helmet too close to gasoline, cleaning fluids or exhaust fumes.

Consult a sizing chart to see which size helmets should be tried on. Trying on the helmet. To further ensure the helmet is the best fit possible, look for these things after trying it on -- cheek pads which should touch the face without pressing too hard, gaps which make sure there aren’t any between your temples and the brow pads. Neck roll is another area where the helmet has once worn, should not push away from the back of the head. When chin piece is right, the face shield should not touch the nose or chin when pressing on this with full-

Premium VS Budget Tyres

Budget tyres are controversial topic the world over. UK is known to Europe as the “dumping ground” for cheap tyres, said a website, and the country has a higher percentage of budget tyres fitted to their cars than anywhere else in Europe. GAZ looks at the Bahrain scenario. A tyres a tyre... Most people who fit budget tyres do so based on price. Most people ask why spend BD 200 on a set of four premium tyres when you can spend BD150 on a set of budget tyres? To anyone outside the tyre industry, a tyre can be just a black, round thing that holds your car of the road, but with premium brand manufacturers spending hundreds of millions of pounds each year on tyre research and development, budget and premium tyres have vastly different properties. What does it mean in the real world? To highlight the issue, the tyre company Continental recently invited people to MIRA to drive two identical Ford Focus vehicles wearing the same size tyres, with the same tread depth and the same tyre pressures. The only difference was that while one vehicle was fitted with the multiple award winning Continental Premium Contact 2, and the other was a budget tyre.

The wet handling area comprised of a windy track section which demonstrated how the tyres react to high speed direction change, emergency braking and how well balanced the vehicle is. A second test, driven around a constant radius circle designed to simulate a large British roundabout in typical British weather (rain!) allowed those who participated to measure corning speeds and how the car reacted to steering inputs at the limit of grip. The first test comprised of the Continental Premium Contact 2 on the handling circuit. As one would expect from a wet surface, the traction wasn’t as high as it is in the dry, but the car felt like it had plenty of grip, reacting

68

well to our steering and throttle inputs. During the emergence braking the car peaked at 0.82g, and peaked at a similar 0.77G laterally in the corners.

Next up, the constant radius circle, with the Contis providing an average “on the limit grip” speed of 35mph, but offering plenty of feedback as the limit was reached, and subsequently passed. Once passed the limit of grip, the tyres let you know with plenty of feedback and understeer, and while understeer is a dull handling quality, it is is also a very safe quality. Average G on the low grip circle, 0.32g. “Immediately the difference was obvious. The car had much less grip, extremely vague steering and you had very little feedback as to whether the tyre was gripping or sliding.” The Budget Tyre

Next up was the turn of the budget tyre on the wet handling circuit. Immediately the difference was obvious. The car had much less grip, extremely vague steering and there was very little feedback as to whether the tyre was gripping or sliding. Power understeer, something barely noticed with the premium tyre was much more of an issue, with the grip disappearing quickly and taking a long time to regain control once the tyre started sliding. The constantly circle proved even more worrying, with the car seemingly switching between understeer and oversteer with very little steering feel or input. Peak Gs? A meer 0.61G under braking and just 0.55G laterally, some 30 per cent less than the premium tyre. We get a lot of questions asking

whether budget tyres are worth the saving, and we can now say with certianty they are not. Its not just the lack of raw grip, it’s how the car reacts at the limit, and how much control you have once past the limit. A well developed premium tyre has been tested in all situations, where a budget tyre is an unknown quantity.
