angor, the Queen City of Maine, is located on the western bank of the mighty Penobscot River. The proximity of the river made Bangor the “lumber capital of the world” for much of the 19th century. Bangor is the third-largest city in the state and the retail, cultural and service center for central, eastern and northern Maine, as well as Atlantic Canada.

angor’s rich and storied history can be seen even today, in the architecture, monuments, parks, and even the stories that are still a part of our community. Nestled at the confluence of the Penobscot River and the Kenduskeag Stream, Bangor has not forgotten the Native communities that first settled these lands. The Wabanakis, or People of the Dawn Land, camped along the river’s shore, fished its tributaries, relied on its route for access to the sea, and gave to its beautiful valley a name: Penobscot. Among the many monuments throughout downtown Bangor are two memorials dedicated to the first European chroniclers to land on these shores. Searching for gold in 1525, Portuguese explorer Estevan Gomez found a temperate country, and welcoming Native community – but no gold. And in 1604, Samuel de Champlain (more famously known for founding the City of Quebec) first explored Eastern Maine. His journey up the Penobscot River landed him near the Kenduskeag Stream, where today a memorial to his travels still stands. The community of Kenduskeag Plantation began as a lumbering town when a sawmill was built at the mouth of the Penjajawock Stream in 1772, and within 20 years this small town had grown to 576 souls. Deciding that it was time to petition the Massachusetts legislature for an act of incorporation (Maine was still a part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony until 1820), the town sent Reverend Seth Noble to Boston. This “hard-drinking frontier Calvinist”set off with instructions to change the name of Kenduskeag Plantation to Sunbury. Stories about what subsequently
happened are varied and doubtfully authentic; however, whether by accident or design, the plantation’s new name communicated by Rev. Noble at the crucial moment of incorporation was Bangor, a rather mournful Welsh hymn.
Main Street c. 1925
Bangor played a small role in the Revolutionary War in 1779. Ten American ships were scuttled at the convergence of the Penobscot River and the Kenduskeag Stream and remained there until the late 1950s when construction of the Penobscot Bridge disturbed the site. Six cannons were removed from the riverbed; five of which remain on display throughout the region (one was thrown back into the river by area residents angered that the archeological site was destroyed for the bridge construction). By the mid-1830s Bangor had grown into a thriving lumber town, the portal through which the bounty of the inland forests flowed through to the rest of the world. Bangor’s lumber barons built impressive mansions, many of which remain today in the City’s historic districts. By 1860, Bangor was the world’s largest lumber port, with 150 sawmills operating along the river. The city shipped over 150 million board-feet of lumber a year, using Bangorbuilt and Bangor-owned ships most times. In 1860 alone, Bangor’s waterfront saw 3,300 lumbering ships pass by its docks.

was a perfect hiding place to avoid the authorities, Brady and his gang came to Bangor to purchase weapons. However, their stories of purchasing semi-automatic pistols and Tommy guns for hunting didn’t sit with the Maine merchants, who called in the authorities. What followed was the most infamous scene in Bangor’s history, with a shootout between Federal agents and gang members, not ending until the Brady gang members were either dead or in handcuffs. Central Street today features a memorial marker of the community that foiled the FBI’s most wanted.

Though the frenzy of the lumbering industry has shifted to more western states, Bangor maintains its position as the cultural and economic center of Northern, Central and Eastern Maine. Sporting events, cultural activities, education, recreation, and shopping draw visitors from across Maine and beyond to the Bangor that has developed out of its vibrant history.
Potter at Living History Days
The Maine Forest and Logging Museum at Leonard’s Mills in Bradley is preserving, restoring and sharing Maine’s lumbering heritage through events showcasing life at a mill settlement with a waterpowered sawmill, blacksmith shop, log cabin, shingle mill, and many more lumbering related treasures. There are also several self-guided hiking and nature trails. You will find our calendar of events listed at www.LeonardsMills.com or www.livingmaine.org.
Our Heritage
The river not only raised Maine’s lumber trade to the top of the global economy, but also bricks, leather, and even ice (which was cut and stored in winter then shipped to Boston, China, the West Indies, and South America). In 1911, one event changed the face of Bangor forever. On April 30 a fire started in a hay shed and quickly spread to the surrounding downtown buildings and blazed through the night into the next day. When the damage was tallied, Bangor had lost its High School, Post Office & Custom House, Public Library, Norumbega Hall, telephone and telegraph companies, banks, two fire stations, nearly a hundred businesses, six churches, and synagogue and 285 private residences – a total of 55 acres. The community rebuilt itself, and in the process became a showplace for a diverse range of architectural styles, including the Mansard style, Beaux Arts, Greek and Colonial Revival. The historic Bangor House served as one of the nation’s great palace hotels, and hosted luminaries including Jack Benny, John Philip Sousa, Gene Autry, Rudy Vallee, Bette Davis and Duke Ellington. Just as every city’s history must contain its dark side, so, too, does Bangor’s. In 1937, downtown Bangor was the scene of the bloodiest shoot-out in Maine history, complete with big-time gangsters (the FBI’s Most Wanted: Al Brady and his gang) and federal agents. Bangor is a city rich with fascinating history; visit historical and architecturally significant areas to see how Bangor has evolved. For more information, visit our website’s historic districts section at VisitBangorMaine.com. VisitBangorMaine.com

highly respected and decorated Union officer, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain started out as a college professor in Brunswick, Maine. Chamberlain, born in Brewer, Maine as Lawrence Joshua Chamberlain in 1828, decided to volunteer during the American Civil War to fight with the Union Army. Although he did not have any formal military training, Chamberlain quickly rose to the rank of brigadier general, leading the 20th Maine Regiment, which led to him being awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in defense of Little Round Top in the Battle of Gettysburg. Chamberlain moved back to his home state of Maine after the war ended. In 1866, he served as Governor with a record setting win for most votes and highest percentage for any Maine governor by that time, breaking that record yet again in another election in 1868. He returned to Bowdoin College and was appointed president of the college in 1871. When in the area, be sure to stop into the Thomas A. Hill House. Operated by the Bangor Museum and Center for History, this museum is home to important Civil War artifacts, including a sword of Joshua Chamberlain’s, and several letters written by Union soldiers, Joshua Chamberlain and Hannibal Hamlin.

Towns within the Greater Bangor Region The Greater Bangor Region is home to 21 surrounding communities, each with their own unique attractions and accommodations. Brewer Cross one of the three bridges from Bangor to Brewer and you’ll be in the birthplace of Major General Joshua Chamberlain. The 32nd Governor of Maine and Civil War hero, he is memorialized at the Chamberlain Freedom Park, which is a replication of Little Round Top, a battlefield at Gettysburg. The park, complete with split rail fencing, is also a monument for the Underground Railroad.
As the sister city to Bangor, Brewer was as famous for its bricks in the 19th century as Bangor was for lumber. With over 12 million bricks being made annually, there were 1215 brickyards shipping much of their production to Boston and much of Boston’s Back Bay and South End neighborhoods are built from bricks made in Brewer. Tour this lovely city and be sure to make a stop at the revitalized Penobscot Landing and Children’s Garden for a walk through the half acre park, located right on the Penobscot River.
Veazie, Orono, and University of Maine Located just north of Bangor is the state’s flagship university, the University of Maine in Orono. Orono is one of the youngest towns in Maine, with a vibrant, healthy and friendly feel, featuring abundant recreation opportunities with all the comforts of home. The community is host to seven parks, including a five acre river-
side park, great for picnics and concerts alike. There are over 1,200 acres of walking and bike trails and riverfront parks, complete with takeout sites for canoes and kayaks for the adventurous. While in the area, catch a performance at the Collins Center for the Arts, host to many national touring acts including Broadway shows. If you’re on campus around the holiday season, don’t miss the Page Home and Farm museum’s wreath making classes. Or you can visit the three exhibition areas of the Hudson Museum, featuring a rotating exhibit and two permanent exhibits, which highlight world cultures and rare artifacts in the Maine Indian Gallery. Live sports more your speed? Take in a hockey game or other collegiate sporting event at the University of Maine. A visit to the University of Maine isn’t complete without exploring Downtown Orono’s unique restaurants, brewery, and shopping opportunities.

Think of the Greater Bangor Convention & Visitors Bureau when planning your events, trainings, seminars, receptions, networking sessions, office get togethers, or meetings!
The following tours are offered at various times throughout the year. Please visit VisitBangorMaine.com for times, dates and pricing information.
Guided Tours Lace up your shoes, board your bus, and get ready to be entertained by the unique sights and sounds of Bangor! Best of Bangor Tour - Bus Take the ride of a lifetime with the Best of Bangor bus tour! See the sights and learn about the Queen City in this hour and half tour that will take you through 178 years of trials, tribulation, and triumph; from her incorporation in 1834 to the Great Fire of 1911, through her time as the lumbering capital of the world, and beyond. Visitors will get to see the areas that made the city a link in world economics and hear tales of her famous firsts such as railroads, spruce gum, and brownies as well as see stately architecture created by the grand wealth of lumber barons and kingpins of society.
Devil’s Half-Acre Tour - Walking Explore the wicked side of Bangor on this short walking tour! Discover the area of vice and violence that came to be known as the Devil’s Half-Acre, where despite Maine’s 1851 Prohibitory Law, saloons and drinking establishments thrived in Bangor alongside brothels and overcrowded tenements. Hear the stories of Madams, prostitutes, wild Irishmen, lumbermen and sailors as well as the beleaguered police and reformers who tried to clean up the town. No members of the Bangor Temperance Society or the National Purity Association allowed! Recommended for adults only.
Ghostly Bangor - Walking Prepare for the paranormal! Follow a winding path through haunted Bangor and stop at several sites to hear tales of
reported ghostly activity on this special tour. At each stop a specter will appear to tell his/her tale of tragedy and explain why the haunting still occurs. Whether or not you believe in ghosts, one thing is for certain - some former residents of Bangor are still around attending to unfinished business from their corporeal lives. Trapped here either by their own will or by circumstance, these spirits have something to say to the living. Bring a friend or come alone...if you dare!
Mt. Hope Cemetery Tour - Walking Take a tour of the second oldest Garden Cemetery in the country and meet some of the locals! Walk along the trails through a space created for both the living and the dead and hear tales about some of Bangor’s more famous people. Hear stories about the wealthy lumber barons, Vice President Hannibal Hamlin, and Joseph Junen (the first murder in 1791) among many others.
Mt. Hope Cemetery Twilight Tour - Walking Take an unusual tour of the second oldest Garden Cemetery in the country and meet some of the lesser known residents. See the sights you would not get to see on any given day and hear stories of the lost, forgotten, and murdered in Bangor’s history. Walk among the faint trails of the Public Grounds area, see the gravesite of Bangor’s first murder victim, and listen to tales of the city’s unwanted and unknown found in Stranger’s Row. Recommended for ages 12 and up.
Bringing a motor coach to the area and looking for something to add into your trip? We offer step-on guides for each of our tours. Just call the Greater Bangor CVB at 207.947.5205 or email info@visitbangormaine.com for pricing and to schedule your tour today! VisitBangorMaine.com
The River Drivers Statue
Monument Tour - Bus See the unusual and the memorable in this hour and a half long bus tour, which takes visitors from the heart of the city to the outskirts and back again. Hear the surprising stories of how Bangor’s monuments were created and who they were created for. Monuments will include the River Drivers, Paul Bunyan, a record breaking race horse, military men and women, War commemoration, Hannibal Hamlin, Joshua Chamberlain, and abolitionists as well as the Underground Railroad. Sometimes sad, sometimes patriotic, sometimes outrageous but always enlightening - after hearing these stories, you will never see Bangor’s history and her residents the same way again.
Tommyknockers and More Tour - Bus A Stephen King Literary Tour This tour is the world’s only literary tour focused solely on the famed author’s Bangor. Come explore the sights and sounds that inspired many of King’s works. You’ll see where Ellie saw the “Skinny Santa,” the “Sematary” where Stephen King, himself, presided over the funeral of Missy Dandridge, and if you dare, we even visit “the Barrens.”
Tours are created and delivered by the Bangor Museum and History Center (www.bangormuseum.org). 31

angor’s Paul Bunyan Statue is 31’ tall, can withstand winds of 110 mph and is one of the largest statues dedicated to him in the world. Even though Lucette (Paul’s wife) has begun to try to make him eat healthier, poor Paul still weighs in around 3,700 lbs. There is also a time capsule hidden away in his base, which will be opened in 2084. The statue was donated in 1959 on Bangor’s 125th anniversary, designed by local artist J. Norman Martin, and constructed by Messmoor & Damon out of New York. Paul is also friends with famed author and Bangor resident, Stephen King. We aren’t sure if they run in the same social circles but Paul was featured in and brought to life in King’s 1986 novel “It.” You can find out more about Stephen King’s Bangor and the Paul Bunyan statue by going on one of four public “Tommyknockers and More” tours, that run throughout the summer months. The Paul Bunyan myth was concocted by lumberjacks swapping tall-tales in Maine’s north woods and in the area known as the “Devil’s Half-Acre” in Bangor. The Bangor Museum and History Center hosts a walking tour of our ‘red-light district,’ highlighting the stories of Paul’s friends (lumberjacks), madams, wild Irishman, and the police and reformers that tried to clean up the town.

Then head over to the Bangor Mall area, between Hogan Road and Stillwater Ave-
