angor’s rich and storied history can be seen even today, in the architecture, monuments, parks, and the stories that are still a part of our community. Nestled at the confluence of the Penobscot River and the Kenduskeag Stream, Bangor has not forgotten the Native communities that first settled these lands. The Wabanakis, or People of the Dawn Land, camped along the river’s shore, fished its tributaries, relied on its route for access to the sea, and gave to its beautiful valley a name: Penobscot. Among the many monuments throughout downtown Bangor are two memorials dedicated to the first European chroniclers to land on these shores. Searching for gold in 1525, Portuguese explorer Estevan Gomez found a temperate country, and welcoming Native community, but no gold. In 1604, Samuel de Champlain (more famously known for founding the City of Quebec) first explored Eastern Maine. His journey up the Penobscot River landed him

near the Kenduskeag Stream, where today a memorial to his travels still stands. The community of Kenduskeag Plantation began as a lumbering town when a sawmill was built at the mouth of the Penjajawock Stream in 1772, and within 20 years this small town had grown to 576 souls. Deciding that it was time to petition the Massachusetts legislature for an act of incorporation (Maine was still a part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony until 1820), the town sent Reverend Seth Noble to Boston. This “hard-drinking frontier Calvinist” set off with instructions to change the name of Kenduskeag Plantation to Sunbury. Stories about what subsequently happened are varied and doubtfully authentic, however, whether by accident or design, the plantation’s new name communicated by Rev. Noble at the crucial moment of incorporation was Bangor, a rather mournful Welsh hymn. Bangor played a small role in the Revolutionary War in 1779. Ten American ships were scuttled at the convergence of the Penobscot River and the Kenduskeag

Stream and remained there until the late 1950s when construction of the Penobscot Bridge disturbed the site. Six cannons were removed from the riverbed; five of which remain on display throughout the region (one was thrown back into the river by area residents angered that the archeological site was destroyed for the bridge construction). By the mid-1830s, Bangor had grown into a thriving lumber town, the portal through which the bounty of the inland forests flowed to the rest of the world. Bangor’s lumber barons built impressive mansions, many of which remain today in the city’s historic districts. By 1860, Bangor was the world’s largest lumber port, with 150 sawmills operating along the river. The city shipped over 150 million board-feet of lumber a year, mostly using Bangor-built and Bangor-

Enjoy the Cool Sounds Summer Concert Series in downtown Bangor, the energetic sounds of the Bangor Band, or one of the many music concerts and festivals on the Bangor Waterfront during the summer, such as the American Folk Festival (AFF). Held during the last weekend of August, the AFF features music from Cajun to Irish, Quebecois to blues, and this free festival presents more than 20 different groups over three days on numerous stages. You also won’t want to miss the wide variety and food and craft vendors during this weekend event. Bangor’s waterfront is also home to the Darling’s Waterfront Pavilion, which is an open air amphitheater located in a 58-acre public park on the banks of the historic Penobscot River in the heart of the downtown district. Maine Air Museum

There are educational opportunities. The Bangor Public Library, housed in a historic downtown building, is home to more than 450,000 books and other media material. The library is also host to many free events, such as story hour and interactive exhibits. Another stop to make in your quest for knowledge is the Bangor Historical Society’s Thomas A. Hill House and Civil War Museum, featuring artifacts and guided tours. Or if aviation history is more to your liking, visit the Maine Air Museum near the airport. See the first plane to cross the Atlantic, a Dow Field Crash Fire Truck, and other unique artifacts from Maine’s aviation history. If you have kids in town, the Maine Discovery Museum is the perfect place for you. The largest children’s museum north of Boston, MDM has rotating interactive exhibits and hands-on activities guaranteed to keep them amused for hours. You could also spend the afternoon at the Cole Land Transportation Museum. This museum features an acre of history with countless stories to accompany the displays. Children can check out full-sized trains, carts, and automobiles used throughout Maine’s history, and see how transportation has evolved over the years. The Cole Land Transportation Museum is free for anyone under the age of 19, and is open seven days a week between May 1st and November 11th.

There are also many parks where you can stretch your legs or simply grab a bench to catch up on some reading. Cascade Park, a longtime favorite, features a regal fountain, inviting picnic tables, benches, and even a waterfall. The park is

a pleasant place for outdoor gatherings and an amazing backdrop for a wedding. The Bangor City Forest (the Rolland F. Perry City Forest) is home to hundreds of wild animals, including deer, moose, bears, turkeys, beavers, birds, and rabbits. Walk, hike, or bike the nine miles of groomed trails on over 680 acres of land at the forest, as well as four miles of access roads. There you may find yourself admiring a doe and her fawns or marveling at the vibrant autumn colors of changing leaves. The nearby Orono Bog Boardwalk adds an educational slant to a delightful walk. The University of Maine in Orono also features an educational garden. The Lyle E. Littlefield Garden is filled with plants and trees of many kinds and is a teaching garden for the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s horticulture students. Take a leisurely stroll and learn the names of the beautiful plants around you. Windswept Gardens is another haven for plant-lovers. Located on Broadway in Bangor, take a stroll through the two-acre display gardens, complete

with croquet court and pagoda pavilion. If you’re looking for a little adventure, Hirundo Wildlife Refuge in Old Town is a great trip. You can enjoy a self guided canoe or walking trail. Canoe’s are available free of charge on site! Scour the Greater Bangor area in search for hidden geocaches and travel bugs using your GPS device or smartphone. There are 185 caches within a five-mile radius of Bangor and more than 800 within a 25-mile radius of Bangor.

Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race Save The Date Every 3rd Weekend in April Welcome spring with one of the largest paddling events in the country—the Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race. The race was started by Ed “Sonny” Colburn and Lew Gilman in 1967. Paul Bunyan Local Legend Bangor’s Paul Bunyan Statue is 31' tall, can withstand winds of 110 mph, and is one of the largest statues dedicated to him in the world. Even though Lucette (Paul’s wife) has begun to try to make him eat healthier, poor Paul still weighs in around 3,700 lbs. There is also a time capsule hidden away in his base, which will be opened in 2084. The statue was donated in 1959 on Bangor’s 125th anniversary. Paul was designed by local artist J. Norman Martin and constructed by Messmoor & Damon out of New York. The Paul Bunyan myth was concocted by lumberjacks swapping tall-tales in Maine’s north woods and in the area known as the “Devil’s Half-Acre” in Bangor. The Bangor Museum and History Center hosts a walking tour of our historical red-light district, highlighting the stories of Paul’s friends (lumberjacks), madams, wild Irishman, and the police and reformers that tried to clean up the town. Paul is also friends with famed author and Bangor resident, Stephen King. We aren’t sure if they run in the same social circles but Paul was featured in and brought to life in King’s 1986 novel It. CLAIMS TO FAME

Hannibal Hamlin Local Legend Hannibal Hamlin was the first Republican Vice President of the United States, serving under President Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War. Born in Paris, Maine, he attended Hebron Academy and tried a variety of jobs throughout the years until he moved to Hampden, Maine, to practice law. Hamlin’s political career began in 1836 with a term in the Maine House of Representatives. He later served two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1843 to 1847. In 1848, he was elected to fill a vacancy in the U.S. Senate and served a full term in 1851. In 1861, Hamlin became Vice President under Abraham Lincoln. After years of public service, Hamlin retired to his estate on Fifth Street on the west side of Bangor. It was on the 4th of July that Hamlin was playing cards at the Tarratine Club, a gentleman’s club located in downtown Bangor, when he died on the couch. He was buried at the family plot in Mount Hope Cemetery with honors.

n the first day of every summer on Bangor’s waterfront, you will find Bangor’s Beer Festival: Tap into Summer. This annual festival brings together Maine brewers and beer nerds alike for an afternoon of tasting delicious local brews, discussing new trends in the beer world, eating a local food from a variety of vendors, and listening to local musicians. Joshua Chamberlain Civil War Highlight A highly respected and decorated Union officer, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain started out as a college professor in Brunswick, Maine. Chamberlain, born in Brewer, Maine in 1828, Chamberlain decided to volunteer during the American Civil War to fight with the Union Army. Although he did not have any formal military training, Chamberlain quickly rose to the rank of Brigadier General, leading the 20th Maine Regiment, which led to him being awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in defense of Little Round Top in the Battle of Gettysburg. Chamberlain moved back to his home state of Maine after the war ended. In 1866, he served as Governor with a record setting win for most votes and highest percentage for any Maine governor by that time, breaking that record yet again in another election in 1868. He returned to Bowdoin College and was appointed president of the college in 1871. When in the area, be sure to stop into the Thomas A. Hill House. Operated by the Bangor Museum and Center for History, this museum is home to important Civil War artifacts, including a sword of Joshua Chamberlainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, and several letters written by Union soldiers, Joshua Chamberlain and Hannibal Hamlin.

The 32nd Governor of Maine and Civil War hero, he is memorialized at the Chamberlain Freedom Park, which is a replication of Little Round Top, a battlefield at Gettysburg. The park, complete with split rail fencing, is also a monument for the Underground Railroad. As the sister city to Bangor, Brewer was as famous for its bricks in the 19th century as Bangor was for lumber. With over 12 million bricks being made annually, there

were 1,215 brickyards shipping much of their production to Boston and much of Boston’s Back Bay and South End neighborhoods are built from bricks made in Brewer. ORONO, OLD TOWN, VEAZIE, AND THE UNIVERSITY OF MAINE Located just north of Bangor is the state’s flagship university, the University of Maine in Orono. Orono is one of the youngest towns in Maine, with a vibrant, healthy, and friendly feel, featuring abundant recreation opportunities with all the comforts of home. The community is host to seven parks, including a five-acre riverside park, great for picnics and concerts alike. HERMON, HAMPDEN, WINTERPORT, AND NEWBURGH Home to Bangor’s closest ski area, Hermon Mountain offers a variety of ski terrain, as well as a tubing park. The mountain also features night skiing, both ski and snowboard lessons, 20 trails, and base lodge. Hermon is also home to the

Ecotat Gardens and Arboretum. You can enjoy tours of the over 55 gardens during the growing season, hike through trails during fall foliage season, or snap on some cross-country skis or snowshoes in the winter. Take a drive through Winterport, home to far-ranging sea captains, and visit the Union Meeting House. Built in 1834 it houses a bell cast by Paul Revere, a belfry clock, and a Masons and Hamlin hand-pumped reed organ.

LEVANT, KENDUSKEAG, GLENBURN, AND CARMEL Feeling adventurous? The Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race starts in Kenduskeag and ends in Bangor every third weekend of April. This race is one of the largest paddling events in the country and is the largest in New England. It is a 16.5-mile paddle, where each year the race is different based on water levels. The Kenduskeag Stream has all classes of rapids, including Class IV rapids.
