EAG 2014 PREVIEW

firstword A time and place to do business

It’s innovation that holds the key PERSPECTIVE Alex Lee ime and tide wait for no man, according to St Marher in 1225.While St Marher pre-dates the EAG International by several centuries, his wise words are eminently applicable to the annual trade show kicking off any day now. The coin-op sector has been forced into a dramatic re-think and a marked change of direction since the Gambling Act, the Smoke Ban, the rise of the FOBT and the global economic slowdown all combined in the space of a few short years to put some pretty intense pressure on our industry. EAG International is living testament to the fact that coinop’s survivors have got this far by accepting that the noughties have brought with them a dramatically different trading landscape to the one which was enjoyed, seemingly by all, before the turn of the century. That acceptance has driven more professional business practises, more efficient manufacturing processes and, hopefully, created a new platform upon which to build for the future. Obviously, further change has to happen with regard to single site operation and B2 machines and much of this will have to be driven ‘from the top’ but no-one can deny that without innovative, exciting new products the coin-op sector cannot thrive. I could go on for hours listing compelling reasons to visit or exhibit at EAG, but I’m sure you’re more than wise enough to have noted them by now. Let’s face it, it’s the only coin-op trade show I’m aware of that’s accessible via cable car. If that’s not reason enough to come down, regardless of the state of the Thames’ tide, I don’t know what is.

T

t’s almost hard to believe that EAG International is now in its fifth year of operation. Looking back, however, it is clear that a great deal has changed in the European gaming and amusement industry during that fleeting half decade, as those within the business find new and innovative ways to attract consumers amid the worst economic period since the end of the Second World War. To say the least, the UK’s coin-op industry has had the rough end of the stick over recent years. Moderate stake and prize increases in certain gaming sectors - coupled with a few piecemeal government business initiatives - can only really be considered small victories, as the industry continues to face unfavourable legislation and continually cautious spending habits. While it is unclear exactly how long it will be until consumers begin to ramp up their leisure spend to pre-recession levels, the coin-op community has been quick to adapt, not only driving R&D forward to bring the most exciting products to the gaming floor, but also behind the scenes - be it through increas-

ing back-office efficiencies to implementing innovative loyalty schemes and player-friendly cashless systems. Those within the UK’s gaming and amusement industry made it clear that they would not be circling the wagons, and it is encouraging to note that the organisers of EAG have taken the same tack. Karen Cooke and her team have been looking overseas in an effort to enlist a new wave of global manufacturers and suppliers for the greater good of the industry. “With four EAG Internationals behind us, and taking into account pre-registration numbers, we anticipate that the 2014 show will attract around 5,500 industry professionals,” Cooke said in the run-up to the show. Although it is impossible to get out the proverbial crystal ball and offer any solid predictions for 2014, the pages of this year’s Coinslot Review are packed with the latest innovations - from the hotly tipped plush and redemption pieces of the year to the new £100-ready Category C machines. So here’s to an invigorating EAG and another five years...

sectoroverview INTERVIEW

EAG International organiser Martin Burlin spoke to Alex Lee about the prospects for this year’s ever-growing annual coin-op event.

An event to underline the industry’s resilience 2B: Do you believe the industry is on the way up and that the days of consolidation and contraction has come to an end? Martin Burlin:The last few years have been some of the toughest endured by our industry in living memory. The problems suffered by European economies are well-documented and put simply; our customers have less to spend.Within the UK, delays to the Triennial Review, the decline of many seaside resorts, pub closures and the smoking ban have all taken their toll. Despite these factors, EAG International has consolidated its position as the opening event for the New Year and continues to attract new exhibitors. It would be a brave man who would say that the industry is ‘on the way up’ but many operators had a good summer in 2013, primarily due to the weather and increasing popularity of ‘staycations’. EAG International 2014 exhibitors will be showing new Cat C AWPs with the £100 jackpot and manufacturers continue to invest and innovate in other amusement categories. On balance, there are reasons to be optimistic. What never fails to surprise me is the resilience of our industry.

B

B2B: Do you feel that the UK coin-op industry has supported the show sufficiently in the runup to the event? MB:EAG International is the industry’s own show so its very existence is a testament to the industry’s support. We appreciate that attendance represents a significant financial commitment. We’re heartened by the increasing number of companies using EAG International’s media contacts to promote new products and generally inform the press about what visitors can expect.Having said this, I think we can do more in this area and we’re encouraging everyone to feed in information which we can distribute to the press and social media, via EAGLive. B2B: What size will the show be when it opens in January? MB:EAG International attracts all of the UK industry’s leading distributors so it’s difficult to be precise about the number of represented manufacturers, but it was over 180 at the last count. The 2013 show occupied 10,500 square feet and attracted 5,411 visitors. B2B: What are the EAG show’s unique selling points this time around and as a show per se? MB: EAG International is the largest UK show in its sector. Because many associations and groups hold their meetings at the show, it’s a very efficient use of time. On a wider note, the timing at the start of the year is perfect and it’s a show

which participants have the ability to influence directly. B2B: What are your expectations for the show and what message are you hoping to put out? MB:I guess we’d like to put out a message of innovation and optimism and the fact that no other three days in the calendar can have such a profound impact on the participants business. B2B: How relevant are shows such as EAG for discussing issues such as the Triennial Review & the FOBT debate? MB:The show is hugely relevant for these debates, both in a structured way at the various meetings around the show, and informally on the show floor and at networking events. B2B: How important is it to have a decent overseas contingent or is the focus solely on serving the UK market? MB:The overseas contingent is extremely important to the show. This year 28 per cent of visitors travelled from overseas. I think it’s fair to say that for some exhibitors the home market is very much a known quantity but they have a desire to expand into overseas markets. B2B: Som sum up: why should people visit the show this time around? MB: Simply, there is no other way for the majority of operators to see so many world class companies demonstrating so much equipment in one place at one time. For example, there are 180 represented manufacturers and 14 new exhibitors for 2014. There are exhibitors from UK, Italy, Poland, China, Spain,Taiwan, Belgium, Germany, Northern Ireland, Sam Marino,Turkey and the UAE all under one roof in a world-class venue, so that networking with trade associations and colleagues is easy.

sectoroverview ‘Our industry is built on an entrepreneurial spirit’

We have always worked very closely with EAG and continue to do so.The BACTA/EAG Advisory Board continues to work with Karen Cooke and Martin Burlin to ensure that we are optimising our opportunities. Martin continues to provide outstanding leadership for the show and he liaises closely with National Council who provide him with their full support. Last year our members had to deal with a major change with Machine Games Duty (MGD) and also anticipating the changes in stakes and prizes, but our industry is built on an entrepreneurial spirit and change means opportunity. At the same time we have an unprecedented growth in remote gambling which makes Britain’s traditional limits on machine numbers based on premises licences look increasingly obsolete. We need to understand more about how the modern consumer is going to play games and use their leisure time, whether on our premises or playing on remote devices. Looking ahead to EAG 2014, the Triennial changes will dominate the show,so we can expect to see innovations around Category C, B4s and B3A. The SWP market remains a challenge but it will be interesting to observe the way in which the indus-

try is responding to the pub market, including the use of tablet technologies. The big issues remain the same: lack of parity regarding B2 machines and inconsistent regulation and taxation of remote gambling. On top of this there will be developments with the Rank case and exploring where we go next with Category D product. We feel very let down by the Gambling Commission and DCMS in not providing a modest increase for reel based Category D and we need to develop a strategy to take this forward which will be discussed at the next round of BACTA’s divisional meetings in February. BACTA will again have a stand at EAG, and the BACTA team will be out in force to meet current members and new members. Our external experts will also be present, including Peter Bingle, who covers what happens in Westminster, and Richard Holm from PwC, who will be presenting a seminar regarding Linewebber and the Rank Case. We will also be offering new members a special discount if they join at the show. It is a great opportunity for us to see our members from all over Britain and our compliance team will also be on hand to answer any questions.”

SWOT ANALYSIS

Throughout Europe, EAG International’s exhibitors have been preparing their largest ever selection of new products, and the event’s organisers are predicting a strong show.

10

CoinslotReview JANUARY 17 - JANUARY 23, 2014

Opportunities abound at EAG 2014 reparations for EAG International are in the final stages, with manufacturers from Europe and beyond putting the final touches to their product presentations. When the organisers of EAG first unveiled ExCel as the home of their UK amusement and gaming show, certain industry representatives voiced their opinion that the east London venue was located simply too far away from the centre of the capital, and that people would not venture to the event. How wrong they were. On so many different stages, ExCel has proved itself to be a truly worldclass destination venue. Similar events in Europe - notably the dual Enada shows in Rimini and Rome and FERInterazar in Madrid - also take place on the outskirts of their host cities, and the trade-off between a centrally located venue with antiquated facilities and one slightly further afield with improved set-up/strip-down capabilities and better delegate services really is a no-brainer. For the visitor, ExCel London, EAG International’s home, is the most accessible and impressive venue in the UK, benefiting, as it should, from a wide choice of hotels and easy access via road, rail and air. The sheer breadth and number of product launches planned for EAG International is impressive.A small sample of what visitors will see reveals the latest 4D immersive video theatres, amusements, vending, redemption games and systems, prize merchandise, kiddie rides and a wide range of the

P

latest licensed and generic plush. UK operators expecting to see the first £100 AWPs will not be disappointed, with several manufacturers planning to reveal their new games releases. Such is the focus of EAG International that virtually all exhibitors plan to show something new, with several strong global brands promising European releases. Exhibitors will have travelled from Belgium, China, Germany, Italy, Northern Ireland, Poland, San Marino, Spain,Taiwan,Turkey and the UAE. Indeed, despite tough trading conditions, EAG International 2014 has attracted 14 completely new exhibitors. EAG’s prominence and timing have encouraged a number of associations and other industry groups to hold meetings and special events at the show, achieving remarkably efficient use of time for attendees. Organiser Karen Cooke has been particularly impressed by the amount of new products debuting at the show: “Most key exhibitors are planning to reveal a staggering array of exciting new products, many of which will be European launches,” she said.“EAG International has firmly established its position as the place to see and try new products for the coming season.” With many operators feeling cautiously optimistic about prospects for 2014, increased investment in equipment and ancillary products will inevitably follow. EAG International will gather the latest and best products under one roof, enabling purchasers to make informed choices and secure the best possible return on their investments.

SWOT ANALYSIS EAG INTERNATIONAL 2014 STRENGTHS •Now in its fifth year, EAG International is firmly established as a must-attend event on the coin-op trade show calendar •Support from those serving a wide range of gaming and amusement sectors, including AGCs, bingo, FECs, piers and coastal venues, inland arcades, pubs, clubs and theme parks •Growing domestic and international exhibitor base WEAKNESSES •Prolonged economic downturn affecting both operator and consumer spend •Industry growth hampered by legislative disparity across AGC, LBO and casino sectors OPPORTUNITIES • New £100 prize presents new opportunities for the Category C gaming sector • Plenty of networking opportunities both on and off the trade show floor • EAG continues to attract a growing number of exhibitors from Europe and even further afield THREATS • Unpredictable economy could hinder growth in 2014 • The industry continues to be a victim of unfavourable legislation and government whims

The weather is less challenging than the market for Weston’s Grand Pier. Coinslot Review spoke to owner Michelle Michael.

MICHELLE MICHAEL, DIRECTOR OF WESTON GRAND PIER

PIERS

With the nation slowly emerging from the recession, the operators of Teignmouth’s Grand Pier have found success in offering their customers good value while keeping a tight watch on their own spending.

12

CoinslotReview JANUARY 17 - JANUARY 23, 2014

The long walk back from the end of the pier ell and high water came to Weston super Mare with the storms and tidal surges that have ravaged the UK’s coast in the last month or so. But British stoicism has been much in evidence on the Grand Pier at Weston. “We opened every day,” co-owner and director Michelle Michael told Coinslot Review.“Water came up to the pier deck but never over it.The council shuts the seafront floodgates on very high tides but by luck, the tide times meant we weren’t too badly affected. I think we opened about 20 minutes later than normal one day - and anyway people were climbing over to get on to the pier. The waves were quite a spectacle and there have been some great photos taken from the pier.” So a dramatic start to 2014, then. That came after a modestly improved 2013 compared to the year earlier. “Having the hot weather last year was great for the coast,” said Michael,“but it wasn’t the perfect weather for us: there weren’t those afternoon showers that drive customers in.We were a few per cent up on 2012. I think the inland arcades suffered a lot more as people were going to the coast on days out.We at least would get waves of visitors coming in out of the heat.” The continuing economic pressure being felt by a lot of people also helped

H

SUNNY DAYS ON THE GRAND PIER

keep the market from truly flourishing last year, she added, as well as the stay-lengths of visitors. Michael said:“About 90 per cent of visitors to Weston last year were day-trippers - and that means quite short days. People generally get here by about 11am and then they’re starting to leave about 4pm. Our footfall really starts dropping off about then and even more after 6pm. We are working with others to encourage more people to stay overnight, and we are also looking at promotional partnership schemes with other attractions.” EAG is a major event for Michael in preparation for the new season. She said: “We’ll be looking for innovation at the

show, something that’s new and exciting. We’re looking forward to seeing our suppliers, with whom we have a great relationship - because of our high footfall, they’ll often place games on test with us, which we like very much.” She continued: “We seeing more and more interest in redemption games, which appeal across our really wide demographic. Grandparents who are often looking after kids for their parents are happy to give them a bag of 2p’s to play at pushers and redemption games. The tickets encourage people to come back and save for the big prizes but also cater to the impulsive ones, who want to exchange them for sweets straight away.”

Teignmouth Pier builds success by blending old and new machines ooking back on 2013, Nik Brenner, director at Teignmouth’s Grand Pier, recalled that tough economic conditions encouraged operators to walk a careful balance between new and second hand machines, with a focus on games that afford players long-lasting enjoyment. With many visitors still feeling the effects of the credit crunch, Brenner believes that his patrons are looking to get good value for their money. “Tuppeny pushers have been phenomenal,” he said. “We purchased a couple of second hand machines this season and they’ve done particularly well.”

L

He recalled that young children were the most valuable visitors to their arcade, with machines that provided a lengthy experience proving the most popular. “We put sweets on the beds of our pushers,” he said. “The kids get their pound of twos and they walk away with a handful of sweets having had half an hour’s fun.” When scouting for new machines the pier looks primarily for opportunities to purchase second hand games, but there are situations in which they will spend large amounts for a new machine. “We bought a new Pan Amusements shooting gallery at the start of

the season and that’s done very well,” said Brenner, “but that was a brand new piece of us, which was a big investment.” Representatives from Teignmouth will be visiting EAG this year. His father, Anthony Brenner, has been attending the event and its predecessors for almost fifty years. They keep on returning in an attempt to identify “the next big thing” and also to meet suppliers they otherwise deal with remotely. “It’s always worth having a good relationship with your suppliers,” said Brenner. “Especially with credit terms, it never hurts to meet them face-to-face.”

EAG 2014 PREVIEW

marketperspectives DISTRIBUTOR’S PERSPECTIVE

Whatever the difficulties for the industry in the last year, there are new products coming to EAG that has one of the arcade sector’s leading distributors genuinely excited for the year ahead. Coinslot Review spoke to Dean Harding of Crown Direct.

PUB OPERATIONS

With the pub sector passing through a period of radical change, gaming machines look to occupy an increasingly focussed portion of a large operator’s business plan. Bill Epsley of Young’s explains.

14

CoinslotReview JANUARY 17 - JANUARY 23, 2014

Product will offer firm foundation for 2014 I think 2013 was a challenging year for operators,” Crown Direct’s Dean Harding has told Coinslot Review.“It was a great start from EAG all the way through to the end of September with good levels of business, but then last quarter was very poor.”The seasonality of the business was at play, he said, but there were a multitude of other reasons. “The inland AGC and bingo sectors were lagging, especially in the autumn/winter period. I got the impression that income was quite poor. In fairness to them, however, while there was plenty of good product to be had, there was no must-play game, no world-beating machine last year. And I think there was lack of willingness to invest with the Triennial Review on the horizon. I think it’s just a pause.” Harding is excited about the products Crown Direct will be showing at EAG. He said: “If 2014 isn’t a good year, it won’t be because of a lack of product.”

OPERATING THE NEW SYSTEM We are now approaching the one-year anniversary of the introduction of MGD, which saw operators including Crown, having to divert their gaze from the main business for a while as they got to grips with the new system. “I think it was difficult, especially for some operators like FECs dealing with VATable machines and MGD ,” said Harding. “One good thing about is it that operators are now only paying the duty when they’re earning it but it’s hard to say what it’s done to the business. It does offer more flexibility and there have been operators fitting in extra machines if they can without having to worry about fixed fees.” He continued: “In our operations we’ve definitely seen the benefit of five per cent on pushers and it means we’ve been able to test some good stuff since the summer, including Sweet Falls from Harry Levy and the Wizard of Oz two-player from Elaut. We’ve also had great results with Party Time Classic from Astra.”

In the B3 sector, there are two machine ranges to watch out for in particular, Amatic’s Performer (“international casino appeal, very stylish and exciting”) and King of Slots from Blueprint. “There are some great games on the platform, such as Worms,Winstar and jackpot games,” said Harding.“What’s really exciting though is a new feature that will allow AGCs to offer in-house slot tournaments: it’s a great tool for operators.” The Cat C machines on display will offer a wide range of new £100 games. “One to watch in particularly is from Project Coin - what they’ve got is not just a scaled down B3 machine but almost a return to the good old AWP. I’m really excited about it, and I imagine operators will be really excited about it too.” Harding continued:“Cat D belongs to Astra. They’re way ahead in terms of quality and it shows on every machine. We’ll also be showing two new pushers from Harry Levy. “I’m really impressed with the range of products we’ll be bringing to the show.”

Tempered Cat C optimism from Young’s pubs ver the past ten years the pub sector has undergone a period of transformation, as a growing emphasis on boutique culinary experiences has edged out traditional liqueur led outlets. “Customer expectations in terms of quality, service and ambience are now greater than they have ever been,” says Bill Epsley, commercial manager for Young’s. And while there are likely to be more closures, the market still contains plenty of potential for success in venues with and without gaming machines. “Whilst I would expect further casualties,” said Epsley, “the future is bright for professional and

O

talented operators who understand their market and give the customers what they want.” In terms of gaming machines, the Bell Fruit Group remains the most popular with customers, thanks to its many titles based around the Deal or No Deal licence. However, with more companies than ever before entering the market, Epsley notes that, “it is nice to see some competition emerging, which has to be healthy for all.” There’s certainly hope for improved cashbox performance in the Category C sector, thanks the maximum jackpot increase to £100. “Performance during 2013

has not been particularly great overall and is likely reflective of players generally becoming tired or bored of £70 machines,” said Epsley. “From past experience a jackpot increase stimulates interest from both current and lapsed players.” Overall, however, leisure machines are becoming less of a fixture in the pub sector, with Young’s looking to focus on specific venues rather than aiming for a wider install base. “We have been repositioning many of our venues over recent years to reflect the needs and demands of our customers in the geographic areas they serve,” said Epsley. “This has resulted in a

decreasing number of machines as they don’t often fit with the style of operation or ambience we wish to create, so growth will be very limited so we will concentrate on maximising revenue from where machines remain.” On Epsley’s wish list for the coming year is increased clarity from regulators on jackpot limits. “I think we’d all like to see a simpler process for reviewing stakes and prizes,” he said, but was keen that, “the public do not confuse the relative ‘soft’ gaming machines in pubs with the controversial Fixed Odds Betting Terminals which seem rarely out of the news these days.”

EAG 2014 PREVIEW COASTAL OPERATOR Although the previous year may have seen a mix of positives and negatives, in 2014 coastal operator Stade Developments is once again making expansion a part of its plans o say that the last half decade has been a challenging one for the coastal amusements sector might be somewhat of an understatement, but chinks of light are starting to break through once stormy skies. One of those rays of sunshine comes in the shape of arcade operator Stade Developments, which after a couple of years of consolidation and cutbacks is now ready to expand again. Speaking to Coinslot Review, Adrian Moore, director of operations at Stade, said he was entering 2014 with a renewed sense of optimism about market conditions. He commented:“We haven’t bought any new sites for a couple of years, but we now find ourselves in a position where we can go out and look to expand the business. “As long as the business is viable, Stade is interested in acquiring a coastal FEC in any part of the UK.” Elements of this new-found confidence may in part be due to the impact of Machine Games Duty not being as deep as many

T

All geared up to expand

thought it might have been. Moore said: “The implementation of MGD legislation was not as bad as we feared, which means that projections going forward can be more positive.” Stade also scored a hit with the Despicable Me 2 Minions plush. Thanks to the box office success of the animated family film, and in particular the fan-favourite Minion characters, the firm’s cranes saw a welcome boost in players as families queued up to try and win them. However, the good news was offset somewhat by the outcome of HMRC’s appeal in Rank’s VAT case, which Moore said had resulted in his company having to think even more carefully when investing its money, as well as the cold and wet weather that put in a dent in trade for the first six months of 2013. Moore said the forthcoming £100 prize for Category C machines was welcome, but thought it was unlikely to make any significant impact on their performance at coastal locations.

He commented:“I’m not sure if we can justify the investment in upgrading Category C machines, because all of our gaming customers will still play the Category B3 machines to win £500 instead of £100. “£100 just isn’t enough of an uplift something in the region of £250 might make an impact.” One of the major challenges the industry faces in 2014 is the effort required to try and halt the decrease in footfall, Moore stated. To tempt more holidaymakers back to the UK’s traditional resorts, he believes the government would need to spend more promoting tourism in the UK and consider giving tax breaks to seaside industries. Moore also called on the entire coin-op industry to support research and development that would ensure constant supply of new machinery able to compete with mobile gaming technology, and to continue to lobby government to gain AGCs parity with bookmakers/casinos.

marketanalysis AGC SECTOR

With the AGC sector still experiencing tough trading conditions, the year will see operator Players Amusements branch out into other areas of the industry.

16

CoinslotReview JANUARY 17 - JANUARY 23, 2014

Aiming to diversify aced with stiff competition from the increasingly controversial Category B2 machines found in every high street bookmakers, in 2014 AGC operator Players Amusements is making diversification a priority. It shut four arcades in 2013, leaving it with two still open today, and despite a slight improvement in performance since, the business is looking at other areas of the coin-op sector with interest. Director Kevin Birch admitted that although it was something the business had never done before, Players is currently looking at acquiring an FEC where it can offer other types of products, such as coffee and refreshments. He commented:“We want to diversify into other revenue streams, which we are currently slightly restricted with as obviously only over-18s can enter an AGC premises, and many AGC customers expect free refreshments. “We are looking at a few locations that are inland but are still the sort of tourist destinations that will attract high footfall during the summer season.” Birch also revealed that the firm is looking to gain a variation of its Gambling Commission licence that will enable it to operate single sites. “It is where I started in the industry, and it does seem to be an area that is seeing some growth,” he explained. 2013 had been a year of consolidation, Birch said:“I think in itself that was an achievement for us, to see some positivity in improving week on week figures compared to previous years. That was a glimmer of hope that we have turned a corner and things have started to improve.” “We have actually sold a lot of our sites simply because we lacked confidence in the industry. We do love it and we love what we do, but we fell out of love a little bit because conditions have been so tough.” The biggest thorn in the AGC sector’s side has been the Category B2 machine, Birch stated: “Over a long period of time I think every AGC operator has seen that is where its higher stake customer base has gone, because they are not interested in a £2 stake.

F

A 20p/£10 rise for Category D would give the AGC sector a much better lift and more scope to do things with the machines than the £100 Category C jackpot. If the stake isn’t increasing, where is the increase in revenue going to come from?

“We must have three or four people walking through the door every week asking us if we have roulette machines, and despite the bad press they are getting in the media, the younger generation still want to play them.” “I think something will happen, whether it’s 12 months or two years away. There are so many people campaigning against B2 that AGCs operators can all but hope changes are now on the horizon. “I wouldn’t want them in an AGC. In the current climate a £2 stake is enough. We are struggling to get people to play a dedicated 50p stake machine right now - you have to give them a choice.” Birch believes the incoming £100 prize for Category C machines will do little to boost this particular product in AGCs. He commented:“I think £100 will benefit single sites more because hi tech pub machines already have a 25p/50p/£1 or 30p/50p/£1 stake options for the £70 jackpot, so all they are doing is giving the punter a £100 jackpot without increasing the stake. “Besides a few community games that offer a 10p/25p/50p/£1 multistake, there aren’t really that many lo tech machines out there that can do the same. “A 20p/£10 rise for Category D would give the AGC sector a much better lift and more scope to do things with the machines than the £100 Category C jackpot. If the stake isn’t increasing, where is the increase in revenue going to come from? With the availability of credit a big factor for people that spend money in a gambling environment, Moore said that 2014 would be another challenging year for AGCs. He commented: “For 15 to 20 years, the three months before Christmas and the three months after it were the best six months of the year for an inland AGC. “With the problems getting credit, people that may have used surplus cash to gamble and frequent AGCs now use that cash for everyday necessities and for Christmas. “Until that situation improves, I don’t think we are going to see much of an improvement in the short term.”

EAG 2014 PREVIEW

MANUFACTURING

With the overall economy showing signs of recovery, Reflex is heading into EAG looking to build on the first full year since their machines made the transition to pubs in 2012.

Reflex Gaming sees green shoots in pub sector ince bringing its reel-based products into pubs across the UK, Reflex has positioned itself as a major player in the market. They head into EAG with a range of new games and cabinets, many of which have been tailored to fit the new Category C £100 jackpot increase. “We have worked extremely hard and have been very focused on making sure that we have compelling new products to take to EAG that are on the £100 prize level,” said managing director, Quentin Stott. The team at Reflex have also worked hard to update

S

many of their existing products to fit the new standard. “Equally, we have been through the back catalogue of our Category C products from our first major release Alice’s Wonderland - to make sure that our customers’ demand for updating existing purchases can be met in good time.” Stott is positive about what this jackpot change means for the pub sector. “The main impact of the uplift in jackpot will be that we have a nice three-digit headline figure to advertise on the machines for Category C,” he said. Stott hopes that this boost will play a part in bolstering the confidence of pub operators as they emerge from a difficult economic period. He notes that, “rising costs across the board and a very competitive marketplace,” are making life difficult for suppliers, but as consumer spending increases pubs are beginning to battle the downturn. Looking at the market overall, Stott believes that attendees will visit this year’s EAG with renewed belief. “I think

it’s fair to say that there is a returning level of confidence in much of the wider economy and that is starting to show signs of penetrating through to the gaming machine sector. This, coupled with the new stake and prize opportunity, means that everyone can go to the show with a view of things having progressed.” Reflex is a long term provider of machines to AGC and bingo operators, with new products for this market also scheduled for display at EAG this year. “Our strategy for the arcade and bingo sector has traditionally been to appeal to the lower end of the stakes and prizes offering in order to maximise the amount of time that customers spend on the machines for a modest outlay,” said Stott. “We have enjoyed significant success with our mini cabinet featuring reelbased games in this sector and we have now complimented this with the release of our Starlight Digital Category C compendium featuring 4 games, also housed in the mini cabinet, which we anticipate will be warmly received by the market.”

CHILDREN’S OPERATIONS Seeing a TV show featuring classic coin-op videos has reminded Joyland MD Michael Cole of the powerful potential that brand recognition brings with it.

‘We will strive to seek out new income opportunities’ MUSIC SECTOR Music makes the world go around, so that terrible song goes. So it’s no surprise then that Soundnet and Sound Leisure are heading off to EAG confident in their range of new music new solutions. James Luck, commercial director for Soundnet, explains why it is vital that companies in the sector continue to push the envelope of innovation throughout 2014.

oinslot: How would you summarise the UK’s pub sector as of the end of 2013? James Luck:I think there is a nervousness in the market, which is based on changing site dynamics concerning machines, increasing costs, operator consolidation and the pressures of legal changes ensures traditional operators are being squeezed.

C

CS: How would you gauge response to your re-launched Music Milestones jukebox? JL:The new price point for MIM has been really well received. Its pricing shows similarities with the current market pricing of quality flatscreen televisions compared to their initial Plasma versions of 10 years ago.You get an awful lot for your money now.It also adds a differential to the PremiumVHub,which since the introduction of Music Milestones has seen an increase in orders over the autumn/winter.It is a natural trade up for established MIM publicans. We are seeing multiple operators investing in this way.We now completely cover the bases and all derivatives will benefit from our continued developments in online tech. CS: The mobile-commerce statistics in your recent Soundjack press release are staggering. Is mobile control/payment set to be a game-changer in the UK’s jukebox sector? JL:We truly hope so - and if you look at where more established eCommerce has come since its inception in the early 2000s,we must anticipate a similar take-up in‘mCommerce’ over the next three to five years. We will strive to seek out new income opportuni-

ties and functionality so we can aid the cash generation of our products. It is imperative we look to evolve the music offer to actual end users. The public plays music so differently now from even three years ago.We have to develop services alongside the public perception of technology and music consumption. CS: How did your relationship with PayForIt come about? JL:We were one of the first mobile apps to integrate PayForIt (PFI) back in 2007 when we trialled our first mobile appTrackDial.PFI had only just been formed by four mobile phone networks, Ofcom and the micropayment industry.Rate deals with each network are different but a licensed integrator and aggregator of the service interfaces into our software to ensure we get the simplest and most effective tech solution along with a competitive transaction rate. CS: Do mobile forms of jukebox control/payments pose any challenges in terms of music licensing? JL:There is no real issue regarding music licensing and the mobile payments. We pay all royalties at the site level. There is no consumer mobile music service as such - it’s a remote jukebox - with plays tagged at each venue. CS: It is now half a decade since EAG’s inception. How would you assess the show’s evolution, and how important is EAG in Soundnet’s trade show calendar? JL:With the demise of the annual Preview show each November,EAG is the only proper UK exhibition for ourselves and our machine operators. It is therefore essential to preview our developments and sell our wares.

Looking backward to move forward ith redemption taking children’s fun park Joyland by storm over the past few years, it was no surprise to see its hit status maintained in 2013. As Michael Cole, managing director of Joyland operator Coles Amusements Enterprises, told Coinslot Review, redemption was joined on the list of positives by 2p pushers and, most encouragingly, signs of growth from the park’s coin-operated kiddie rides. He explained that behind the results lay some astute strategy: “Joyland’s target audience is families who are looking to get something back for their leisure spend. “We offer a lot of brand merchandise through the redemption operation and swag the pushers up quite heavily cost-effectively, which can keep players with £3 or £4 worth of 2p pieces active for up to half an hour.” Not surprisingly, when Cole heads to EAG 2014 he intends to look out for further redemption pieces and coin-operated rides, but is keeping an open mind should a new “Holy Grail of machines” pop up at the ExCel. Conversely, seeing a programme on video games hosted by popular presenter Charlie Brooker has also cast Cole’s mind back to a more retro amusements era. He explained: “I watched Channel 4’s How Video Games Changed The World before Christmas, which featured a lot of classic coin-op videos like PAC-MAN and Space Invaders and made me wonder if manufacturers could benefit from looking back to these simpler retro-style games. “They were such huge brands with their own merchandise lines, which is actually a trend we are starting to see in redemption with games like Doodle Jump and Fruit Ninja. Millions of people have them as

W

apps on their smartphones and tablets, and the fact that they already have that brand recognition might be advantageous for operators.” Another big positive has been the success of Joyland’s social media presence. The park doesn’t advertise directly in print media or on the radio, but Cole has seen its Facebook page, grow to become an important promotional medium. He commented: “We have old school friends who grew up together, moved to different parts of the country and now have children of their own, who use the Facebook page to communicate with each other. “I looked at it last year and saw that there was a family in Carlisle in touch with a family in Wales and a family in Kent, who had arranged to meet up at a specific time in August for the first time in around ten years to come to Joyland to ride the Snails.” Looking ahead, Cole said that 2014 would be about hanging on to the market share already secured, revealing that he was already developing new strategies to do so. He said: “The slight light at the end of the tunnel in Great Yarmouth is that the local authority is putting more and more events on, and the area between Joyland and our American diner has been earmarked as a site for them. “We work in conjunction with the tourist authority to look for new events to bring to this area These events bring people and tend to attract customers that we wouldn’t otherwise get.” While the performance of the economy will remain the biggest influence, Cole believes the next 12 months can continue to be profitable: “There’s no way of getting around it - it’s going to be a tough year for a lot of people, but if you offer value for money and have the right product you have a good chance of succeeding.”

EAG 2014 PREVIEW

Taking a scientific approach to the product process PRODUCT & TECHNOLOGY Bandai-Namco head into EAG with a tried and tested approach that will see them boldly launch a selection of new titles. But what are the lessons and procedures to follow for those in the heartlands of product and technological development?

head of EAG, Bandai-Namco has been running their new releases through a series of comprehensive on-site trials, with the company reporting promising results. “We test all of our games extensively before we offer them to sale,” said John Brennan, the commercial director of Brent Sales - Namco’s exclusive distributer in the UK and Ireland. “We need to know that when we recommend them to our customers they will perform well on site.” A number of products have scored well in recent tests and are expected to be popular with EAG visitors. Among them the new Mach Storm game, which stands out thanks to its realistic cockpit and dome screen, and the latest Batman title from Raw Thrills. “Feedback for those two games and the others we will show, such as Alpine Racer, has been incredible. That’s why we know we are going to have an

A

excellent EAG this year.” The same is true of Namco’s Prize Division, which has been seeking feedback from the market to discover the most desirable prizes for their redemption machines. Its latest set of acquisitions include mini tablets, bluetooth smart watches and wireless headphones. With two major releases occurring in the home video game market, Bandai-Namco faces a challenge to draw players away from theTV screens and into the arcade. The company, however, are confident that their machine’s unique design elements provide something different.“When you consider a game like Mach Storm, which is a full-blown flying simulator and shooting game with a massive domed screen,” said Brennan,“or Alpine Racer, which is a ski simulator with a 55 inch screen, then you can understand that this kind of player experience cannot be replicated at home.”

Looking further ahead,Brennan revealed some licences that Bandai-Namco will be focussing on during the next twelve months. “This year, Pac-Man is being rebranded thanks to a new TV series called Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures and so we expect global demand for the character, prizes, machines and other related merchandise to be at an all-time high.” These include a range of Pac Man plush toys from Namco Prize, which will feature in both Namco’s redemption games and a global Burger King promotion. A number of other famous characters have also been secured.“Licences are undeniably important,” says James Anderson, the general manager of Namco’s Prize Division.“As well as our own Pac-Man brand, we feature Shaun the Sheep and Timmy Time from Aardman Animations,Trash Pack and Canimals characters. These are proven brands that have proven to be winners in UK arcades.”

viewpoint OPERATORS

Following a challenging 2013, the industry is off to a much better start to the year, according to Nick Harding of Praesepe.

SEASIDE AMUSEMENTS As representatives from every corner of the leisure and gaming industry gather in London, the Independent Operators Association are hoping to foster debate over rising costs for their members.

20

CoinslotReview JANUARY 17 - JANUARY 23, 2014

Looking ahead to a year of growth ick Harding is CEO of Praesepe, one of the UK’s fastest growing low-stake gaming operators. The group comprises 121 adult gaming centres, including the Crystal Rooms in London’s Leicester Square, four family entertainment centres, six bingo clubs including the UK’s largest capacity club in Cricklewood,north-west London,38 Micro Bingo venues and Beacon Bingo Online. “Last year is probably best described as ‘Unlucky 13’- from the wintry blasts in January to the heat waves in July and August and underpinned by an interminable delay in getting £100 maximum payout on Category C,”Harding said.“It wasn’t an easy year and I do feel that, with the economy improving, £100 on Category C finally giving us some new games based on a good stake/prize ratio we are off to a much better start to the year.” When asked which product sectors he feels are set to stand out at the 2014 edition of EAG International, Harding immediately drew attention to the new batch of Category C games that will take centre stage at the ExCel show, but he also said operators need to be confident that the major manufacturers are able to provide regular new B3 products for their most successful platform

N

terminals. “I am also very keen to see some really innovative pushers,”he stated.“I do feel that pusher design has of late tended to be‘same old, same old’,with not much new and with old ideas simply being given new graphics and ‘go- faster’ stripes. I am eager to try anything that demonstrates that the manufacturer is thinking outside the box. “It is fundamental for AC and bingo operators to continually refresh their product portfolio. You have to continually give your

customers new products and new choices, fail to do that and you might as well fix the date when you close your doors and close your business.” Discussing his thoughts on the forthcoming Category C prize uplift,Harding said the new legislation is positive news for the industry.“My machines team, led by Nigel Davis has been in constant dialogue with manufacturers and game designers and we are enthusiastic about what we hear. Can they deliver? I hope so!”

IOA to challenge manufacturers at EAG The IOA is a nationwide group of 14 operators who have joined forces to boost machine income for their customers. They head into EAG with not only a display of new machines, but a package of divisive issues they are keen to debate with leading industry figures. “The challenge we all face as operators is the rising cost of purchasing machines,” said Peter Weir, chief executive of the group. “Manufacturers cite the costs of development and innovation, but these can only be borne by the industry as a whole, including the pub companies, and not just by the operating

T

sector.” As pressures mounts on pub owners to shift towards food and ambiance, the allure of the gaming machine for a typical pub customer has lapsed. Weir notes that, in this environment, it would be illogical to expect takings not to take a hit. Manufacturers, he adds, must lower their costs if they want the industry to flourish. “Equally,” adds Weir, “if we need to reduce costs we also need to review the capital investment and the service levels we provide.” Away from this debate, the IOA will use EAG as an opportunity to identify profitable new machines for their cus-

tomers. “As an operator we are always looking for new ideas, new products and new ways of using the latest technology,” said Weir. “The EAG provides that platform.” In particular, the changing rules surrounding stakes and prizes for Category C machines has put this class of machine in the limelight. “From our perspective the key focus will be the new Category C products,” said Weir of his group’s EAG presentation. This includes not only new games, but those that performed particularly well during 2013. Weir singled out The Big One from BFG as a title which brought the col-

lected IOA members high sales during the past 12 months. Looking beyond this year’s expo, the IOA has been working in concert with games developers to monitor Cat C titles that will be coming to market in the new year. “We have been in close dialogue with the manufacturing community for many months,” said Weir. Putting a challenge to game creators, he added that, “manufacturers need to provide a quality experience for existing players and a compelling proposition for new and lapsed players,” when the new machines launch later this year.

EAG 2014 PREVIEW

EAG ORGANISER

‘Attracting international buyers is crucial’ oinslot: Do you have any preliminary data in terms of expected visitors to EAG 2014? Karen Cooke:With four EAG Internationals behind us, and taking into account pre-registration numbers, we anticipate that the 2014 show will attract around 5,500 industry professionals. Registration data has not been validated at this stage so we will not release statistics. In line with past shows we can expect a broad spectrum of attendees covering all industry sectors.

C

Karen Cooke reflects on half a decade of the UK’s premier coin-op show and discusses it’s growing international perspective.

CS: EAG continues to grow its international audience. Has this been a natural evolution, or have you been ramping up your overseas marketing efforts? KC: It’s been a combination of both. Many UK exhibitors operate in the international arena and others have a desire to expand into new markets. Conversely, we attract many overseas exhibitors who are interested in the

UK. From a visitor perspective, they want to see the latest and most innovative products to drive their businesses forward, wherever those products may come from. Many of our exhibitors tell us that attracting new international buyers is crucial for their businesses and our marketing activity reflects this. Our direct mail and email campaigns are driven by qualified visitors, and so are truly international. For 2014, our advertising and press releases were targeted at 13 UK-based publications and 25 from overseas. I would stress, however, that the vast majority of the UKbased publications have a totally international perspective.

ers will be showing £100 AWPs for the first time, in line with the triennial review. CS: Does the Bett show, which runs parallel with EAG at ExCel this year, pose any problems for EAG or its delegates? KC: ExCel is a truly world-class venue and will have no difficulty in coping with the increased number of visitors. On the plus side, visitors will have a much wider choice of food and beverage outlets at ExCel. There is no doubt, however, that hotel accommodation on the ExCel campus will be under pressure. In anticipation of this, many visitors have opted to stay at hotels which are slightly further afield, but readily accessible via the Docklands Light Railway.

broadening, with new additions from the attractions and indoor play sectors. Increasingly, trade associations and other industry groups are choosing to hold their own events around the show, for the convenience of their members.Another very important trend is the increase in entirely new products being shown, with manufacturers choosing EAG International as their European launch platform.

CS: What is the biggest thing you have learned in the time you have been driving EAG forward? POOL

Britain’s pool association is looking to help operators through difficult market conditions unveiling fresh ideas at EAG.

he British Association of Pool Table Operators (BAPTO) are making their annual trip to EAG this year, joining 6,000 members of the amusement and leisure industry as they gather at the ExCel arena. The group, which represents the game of pool and the operators who provide it, have been attending the expo for a number of years since first being invited by organisers BACTA. “The main reasons we keep going is

to be there for our existing members and also to attract prospective new members,” said treasurer Bob Blakeborough. The association values the chance to keep its current members updated with rules and regulatory changes and to canvas for additions to its ranks. BAPTO’s research indicates that there are 2,000,000 regular pool players in the UK, with 64% of them playing three times a week.Yet despite these numbers, the pool sector has suffered in recent years.“In addition to pub closures, the trend toward foodled operations and the smoking ban have hit the game hard,” said Blakeborough. “Our members’ tables suffered a 30% revenue decline after the introduction of the smoking ban alone.” BAPTO was created back in 1975 to promote the game of pool in pubs and to negotiate favourable trading terms for its members. With so many UK pool operators still without membership there remains great potential for BAPTO to add to their numbers at EAG. Hundreds of operators will pass through the exhibition hall during the show and the association will be look-

ing to attract many of them in with lucrative members-only offers. “We’ve got a series of discounts set up for members,” said Bob,“and there will be very few, if any, that won’t enjoy more discounts than their membership fee.” Both new and prospective members can gain an insight into these deals at a 2pm drinks reception at the BAPTO stand on the second day of the show. With many pubs still suffering the after effects of the smoking ban, Bob believes that pool can play a vital role in driving profits.“We believe that promotions will drive revenues, especially where licensees are engaged. In addition to delivering valuable incremental revenues, pool can increase both footfall and dwell time, translating to increased bar takings.” In addition to membership offers, BAPTO are hoping to attract visitors to their stand with a selection of new products. Bob Blakeborough told Coinslot that the display will feature a “uniquely designed cue that is totally different and very difficult to describe,” which has been created as an teaching tool for new players.

Keeping the UK entertained in 2014 ith the apparent economic recovery underway following a reasonably good 2013, the attractions operators represented by BALPPA can expect an interesting year ahead, according to chief executive Paul Kelly. He said: “Most of our members reported a good season last year with plenty of good weather. But there’s a lot of catching up to do in terms of refurbishment and investment in new equipment. A number of operators have been holding back over the last five years because of the economic situation and there’s quite a lot of old product out there. That’s why I think there’s going to be quite a lot of business from attractions operators at EAG this year.”

W

A trend that is definitely rolling back in is the VFM - value for money - proposition. “Operators want to use their attractions, including their equipment, to give more to the customer in return for a slightly higher price,” said Kelly. “That can be anything from a ‘behind the scenes’ look at the petting zoo or visits to maintenance areas; there are lots of possibilities and the public really like it.” It’s value for money for the operator too, squeezing just a bit more revenue out without having to put any more in. Another trend is traditionally indoor operators finding ways to exploit outdoor space - giving the customer more options when dealing with our sometimes unpredictable, often less than glorious weather. BALPPA itself will have a lot on its

plate this year. “We are not pleased with the triennial review,” said Kelly. “We will be working a lot more closely with officials at DCMS to help them understand the industry and the pressures that are on it. We will be spending a lot of time with them. But there are also other things on the horizon, such as the consultation on zero hours contracts, which the leisure sector relies on significantly, and the deregulation bill that could see summer holidays reduced to just four weeks.” He added: “Attractions have done a great job in keeping people in the UK spending in the UK over the last four or five years, and that’s to do with quality of product and value for money. We now need to make sure they can do the same when the economic pressure is not so high.”

Emboldened Bingo Association presses the boost button

BINGO

The Bingo Association’s ducks are all in a row for a highimpact 2014. Now, it’s time to start shooting.

he Bingo Association is kicking off 2014 with a bang, launching a huge petition-based campaign to “Boost Bingo”. Bingo operators want the government to reduce their tax rate from 20 per cent to 15 per cent and be able to claim back VAT on investment and refurbishment. “Bingo is a social activity at the heart of our communities,” association chief executive Miles Baron told Coinslot

Review.“Even before the launch of the campaign at clubs across the country on January 17, we’ve been getting hundreds of people signing up.A lot of people play bingo in this country: we want one million signatures on our petition.” He added:“We’ve also been getting big support from MPs, I’m pleased to say. 50 MPs have pledged to attend the launch events at clubs in their own constituencies.” The last year has been a busy one for the Bingo Association, which more than doubled its membership in the early part of last year when it allowed any operator offering licensed bingo to join. “It’s a lot more complex than before,” said Baron,“but it also means that we have a more influence and a greater fund of experience to draw on.The highlights of the last year have been getting agreement on how to run the national game and move it on, and also bringing everyone together to agree a common message on the tax situation.” The Boost Bingo campaign and its crystal clear message is the tangible result of that agreement. With EAG starting just a few days after the launch, the association will have a golden opportunity to gather support from other sectors of the gaming, leisure and entertainment industry. Baron added:“We’ve also got a great deal else to look forward in 2014 with the launch in March of the National Live Bingo Game, which will be the first time that the industry will be linked together for a mechanised cash bingo game.”

aking up the largest stand at this year’s show, the company will exhibit a range of exciting new titles plus 11 current hit games. In addition to an impressive line-up of amusements games, visitors can expect to see the latest licenced and proprietary plush, consumer electronics for prize games and redemption counters, spare parts, as well as Sega’s new Turn Key Division. Welcoming visitors to the Sega’s stand 360 will be a 16-foot tall statue of ‘Bumblebee’ - one of three stars in Sega’s brand-new action adventure game,Transformers Human Alliance; which sees players saving the world from the evil Decepticons! With the instantly recognisable bright yellow cabinets complete with Bumblebee 3D top flash on the 55”theatre and chrome finish guns on the 42” Deluxe, combined with exciting gameplay, intriguing story line and HD graphics,Transformers is set to be one of the biggest launches in video amusement games for a long time. “We are really proud to be working with Hasbro on this iconic franchise and to bring this high quality, high energy entertainment brand to the amusements market,”said Justin Burke, general manager at Sega.“As the release date for the next film draws closer the buzz, energy and excitement to play Transformers Human Alliance will be even greater.” Another major launch title will be Sega’s Plants vs. Zombies™ The Last Stand; a video redemption game based on the multi-award winning video game Plants vs. Zombies. Using the cabinet-mounted Peashooter, players have to fire peas - that’s right, peas - at advancing waves of zombies. Destroy all of the zombie waves to win the jackpot, but let any zombie cross the last line of defence, and its game over. Some of the other major new redemption titles, from leading manufacturer ICE, will be Down the Clown, a follow up from last year’s hit carnival theme game Milk Jug Toss. Keeping with the carnival theme is Whack N’Win where players have to whack the mallet to stop the lights in the bonus zone. Monopoly based on the infamous board game, and Cut The Rope, a famous app game where players slide their finger on the touchscreen to cut the ropes to feed candy to the green monster called Nom Nom. Some of Sega’s own hit redemption games such as Double Spin, Pirates of Monster Island, Snakes and Ladders and Super Monkey ball will also be on display. Following up from the award-winning Key Master, Sega’s new Axe Master will once again raise the bar on prize vending games. PROJECT Project head to EAG with a unique proposition which allows operators to change games after purchase…

n addition to their nine-game Cat C £100 collection,‘Game Swap’ is being introduced to take the risk out of investing in new products, as managing director Tony Boulton explained:“Category C £100 jackpot is the single biggest opportunity that the AGC and Bingo sectors have to differentiate themselves on the high street and we believe that it’s very important the industry hits the ground running rather than waiting and watching. However, we recognise this is new territory for the industry and our Game Swap pledge allows buyers to swap games within what is a large dedicated collection for a nominal charge of £100/swap.The promotion, which runs through to May 1st and is valid for 90 days from purchase, will allow operators to achieve first mover advantage and get their Cat C £100 games working from day one.” Project is describing its nine-strong collection as ‘Amusement With £100 Prize’, with the emphasis on Amusement, and the delivery of what players frequently refer to as ‘a good game’. “The motive for many players is not so much to win money but to have time on a machine and to enjoy the game,” stated Tony Boulton. “Our strategy across all of our six slots and three pokers is to deliver value-for-money gaming for players, many of whom have experienced a decrease in their disposable income and who play to a budget.” He added:“The Project games visitors we’ll see at EAG are not baby B3s but amusement games with a £100 jackpot, and to this end all of our slot games are three reels in order to appeal to the traditional AWP player, and to segregate our Cat C and B3 offers.” The stake/prize point identified by Project is 30p/£100, which has been established to deliver a valuefor-money gaming experience. Tony Boulton concluded: “Our aim is to deliver the best possible offer for the player and 30p offers both affordability and sufficient stake to ensure £100 is a significant part of the game profile. 2014 is a massive year for the industry and with a nine-strong range, coupled with our Game Swap initiative, we are doing everything in our power to make £100 work.”

The star of the show for SB Machines at last year’s EAG was its range of twin kiddie rides, so it’s no surprise to see that more are on the way for 2014.

B Machines is the primary UK and Ireland distributer for kiddie rides from Italian manufacturers such as Cogan, Motoi and Franchini Mauro. This year they are bringing a wide selection of new products to EAG, with a focus on the double rides that proved such a success twelve months ago. A series of new non-licensed rides will be on show, including Double Pony, Twin Motor Bikes and Twin Racing Cars. “Double Disney Cars was the star of our stand at last year’s EAG,” said Paolo Sidoli, managing director of SB Machines. “This year we have three more fantastic double rides to add to our range. They all have a compact footprint but offer operators twice the opportunity to earn from the same ride.” During 2013 the company saw an increasing number of operators replacing their ageing machines with newer designs that are more durable and command a higher fee per play. Those customers who opted for double rides have reported very positive results. “We are very much looking forward to EAG,” said Paolo. “Our site trials for the new rides have yielded spectacular results and many operators who invested in the first models from us are now interested in further investment, thanks to the rising incomes they have encountered.”

Big improvements The future in your hands at Lotelle

Electronics company Lotelle designs and produces a range of products for the amusement industry. And, after an ‘excellent’ 2013, it’s a confident trip to London to EAG for the crane processing specialist.

fter many years of design and research a gap in the market for self-adjusting crane processors was identified. There are many benefits of a self-adjusting crane; increased revenue, reduced setting time, increased reliability and improved payout control. Sales manager, Michelle Andrews, commented; “We saw excellent sales in 2013; building on highly successful test trials, most major operators in the UK are now using TheWon.The stake and prize level increase the Gambling Act changed has boosted crane machine revenue and attracted more customers.Amusement arcades’ ability to vend higher value prizes can really increase their appeal and encourage customers to pay more per play. With higher value prizes, it is now more important than ever that prize payout is accurately controlled, to avoid excessive and expensive payouts by badly adjusted cranes.” “A summer full of holidaymakers will mean an increase in the amount of plush being restocked or changed, with some cranes being attended to more than once a day. With the pressures of busy hot summer’s days, the last thing you want to be doing is worrying about the payout of your cranes, or having to adjust the cranes with a different line of heavier or bulkier toys. Using sophisticated computer control, the payout of the crane is controlled in the same manner as a fruit machine, with just a single setting Plays per Toy to adjust. As the crane is played, the grab strength will be constantly adjusted to ensure the crane maintains its payout target. Not only does this provide the confidence to place any toy in the crane without the need to adjust any settings, it also reduces time spent adjusting. You can also be rest assured that in-experienced staff can now load toys into the crane without a disastrous payout occurring. As the strength of the grab is now so precisely adjusted, the player becomes teasingly close to winning each game, encouraging them to spend that little extra, chasing the win and also reducing customer complaints. Currently, the processor supports all major cranes available in the UK, from the smallest Chinese single player crane to the largest fixed Mammoth cranes.

Dean Harding, managing director, explained to Coinslot Review the key products that will be making their mark: “We have been operating the Wizard of Oz game for three seasons now but the introduction of the two-player version in 2013 really had a strong impact. The size of the machine makes it fit perfectly among the other games we offer, with it mirroring the dimensions of a two-player crane. The income has not been as strong as the six-player, purely due to having less play positions, but the utilisation and overall play time per position are up so cash box, in ratio to level of investment, has been fantastic.”

lectrocoin goes into EAG 2014 with a range of new products aimed at all sectors of the amusement and gaming market. “We are looking forward to the 2014 show with great enthusiasm and expectation,” said Electrocoin’s Kevin Weir. “The implementation of the £100 jackpot in the Category C sector is really exciting for us.We produce a range of Cat C products for all markets and believe that the increase in Jackpot presents real opportunities to take games to a new level.”The company recently announced an increased commitment to the development of new models to fit the updated standard. “This process is already under way and will coincide with the roll out of products for the new prize level,” said Weir.“In addition, we will be showing brand new products for the AGC and bingo markets specifically developed for the new jackpot. These will be in multi-player format at EAG, however single games will also be developed in due course.” Electrocoin’s Vegas Strip product continues to evolve and will be presented in a new alternative format at the show.Weir said:“It may well be that the new jackpot presents digital Category C with its biggest opportunity to date. The flexibility that this format offers may well give the player choices that are less obvious than in analogue games.” Electrocoin will also be unveiling a new BAR X tablet system, a totally new project from the Park Avenue team.Whilst this is the first public viewing of the system, site trials have already been completed and orders have already been placed to roll the system out across a large number of locations. On the amusement front,Stern Pinball has produced two new exciting licensed games. Star Trek and AC/DC Luci, will both be making their UK debut at EAG. Electrocoin’s range of Ticket Redemption management systems from Elmac continues to grow, with the development of Galileo EVO, a two sided ticket eater and Winkiddy, a new ticket payout mechanism for kiddie rides. This year’s show will also see the launch of a brand new skill prize game,Target Hunter. The prize capacity of this game is substantial and is therefore ideal for single site operations. Another first for the ParkAvenue company is the tie up with Andamiro, which has appointed Electrocoin as its UK distributor.

The manufacturers have stepped up to the plate and delivered, say RLMS, who are looking forward to delivering their wares on the ExCeL stage.

R “

LMS Sales is bringing an array of gaming machines to this year’s EAG, with a focus on new and improved Category C machines. 2014 will be the year for Cat C,” said Martyn Allsop, sales and marketing representative for RLMS. “With the implementation for new stakes & prizes underway, our manufacturer partners have risen to the challenge and we will be showing no less than 28 new Cat C models across our five core manufacturing brands.” Those brands include the likes of the Bell-Fruit Group, with their Deal or No Deal (DoND) licence. RLMS are reporting that both the Powerplay and Turbo DoND titles have seen a large amount of precommitment heading into the new year. Also in the Cat C sector, a series of lo-tec titles for the bingo and arcade sectors will be on show. The machines cover a wide variety of stake and prize combinations, including single player, multiplayer, arena style and reel-based. Beyond Category C, all of the companies partnered with RLMS will have new products to show during 2014 and a number of these will be on display at EAG, among them the rebooted version of Pharaoh’s Gold from Super Nova Games. oundnet is set to revolutionise the UK jukebox industry with its new soundjack app. Rather than making their way through the crowds to a static terminal, customers will be able to simply download the app to their smartphones and make a selection from their own devices. Visitors to EAG will be able to see how users can turn their phones into mini-jukeboxes, using them to playing songs remotely while keeping an eye on the queue of tracks.“Based on figures released by those operating similar systems in the US, we believe that soundjack will enable operators to see an uplift in music revenue of around 30 per cent,” said commercial director James Luck. Soundnet believes the app will expose them to an entirely new section of the population. “Smartphone penetration is predicted to rise to 75% of the adult population in 2014 according to IAB,” said company director Simon Davis.“We are confident that an app will bring a new demographic to pay-per-play music. Our research shows that more women will use it and a greater number of under-34s.” Following demonstrations at EAG, the app will become available in early 2014. Operators looking to get involved with Soundnet’s digital future can do so at no extra cost, so long as they are already using one of the company’s online Milestones in Music, Starburst or Vhub jukeboxes. Soundnet will simply take a small percentage of the extra mobile income when songs are requested using the app. Customers will pay for the service through a partnership with mobile payment specialists PayForIt and web-based company Paypal. “Based on figures released by those operating similar systems in the US, we believe that soundjack will enable operators to see an uplift in music revenue of around 30 per cent,” said James Luck. The company has been conducting detailed research into the success of similar mobile launches around the world. They cite figures from Juniper Research, which indicate that retailers who have introduced a paid-for mobile service have seen their average transaction value rise by 40 per cent. Soundjack also plan to integrate data gleaned from their exclusive deal with the Official Charts Company to help users choose the songs they want to listen to. “Soundnet is embarking on a extensive marketing campaign via traditional and social media to ensure that consumer awareness and acceptance of soundjack are maximised,” said Davis.“We tried to launch a similar concept back in 2007 as we could see this was the future. However, the idea was too far advanced for the user. Now is the time for soundjack and we will provide the only crossplatform app that is fully supported with both retail promotions and total consumer engagement.”

V-Hub, the most sophisticated digital jukebox currently on the market, will benefit from a turbo boost with its next generation software update, due to be unveiled at EAG by Sound Leisure.

-Hub 2nd gen will completely overhaul the design and look of the user interface of the jukebox, making it much more intuitive for the customer. It is based on a new software platform that speeds up the processes, to create a slicker, quicker experience that also means Sound Leisure can add greater functionality moving forward. The new software update includes two major new apps: Twitter: this allows a pub or club to have their own Twitter feed, with a dedicated hashtag, which can be accessed on the jukebox as a timeline and via a full-screen advert. This is a fantastic way for a site to promote their presence by encouraging customers to tweet their location, and that of their friends, while out having fun. Flickr: another huge social media phenomenon, this time based on images. Customers to the site are encouraged to upload their photos onto the site’s Flickr feed. If they tag their pictures #fs, they will be able to see their pictures full screen in the pub! “People in pubs and clubs are already tweeting and taking pictures with their phones – our apps allow them to display their pictures and messages via the jukebox and

tell the whole world what a great time they are having in the venue. It’s a win/win situation,” says managing director Chris Black. EAG will also see the unveiling of the flagship HD V-Hub.This has got to be seen to be believed – it benefits from the new interface, and a secondary HD screen that shows the news feeds,Twitter timeline and Flickr photos local to the machine. The incredibly popular Dance Me feature will always be on display on the secondary screen as well. This has been further improved in the new V-Hub software update for all V-Hub jukeboxes. “V-Hub has broken records for income in some sites. However, others felt the interface was a little complex. We have addressed these issues with the V-Hub Gen 2 software update, which will be available to all V-Hub customers free of charge following the show,” says Chris.“Few companies in the industry support their existing hardware to this extent.” “In addition to the smoother interface and social media apps, there is soundjack and Opweb compatibility built in, as well as team viewer technical support and a Credit Countdown feature. This software update will take V-Hub customers to a whole new destination.”

layers roll down coins through the swivel coin entry and attempt to guide coins through the mouths of the comic character heads. On both the Skittles and Greedy Gobs games, tickets are paid out from under the top sign, rather than low down, which gives extra play appeal to family members of all ages. These two redemption games can either be operated individually, or grouped together for maximum effect. Placed back-to-back (in groups of two, four or six machines), they can make an attractive arcade centrepiece at a much lower cost than the average centrepiece model. Great sound effects and LED lighting on both games make the models ideal and proven money earners for the family redemption arcade. All The Fun Of The Fair six-player pushers continue to enjoy popularity in the centrepiece

pusher market and are available with all cash payout, or cash payout, with ticket bonus. With its superb lighting and graphics, this model offers excellent value for money in arcade centrepieces and is offered alongside the alternative Surfers Paradise or Big Top Circus pushers. Camptown Races is a compact small-deck redemption eight-player pusher with cash payout and a ticket bonus that can be used in even small narrow arcades. It is a proven money earner with a popular horseracing theme. Whittakers can also supply oneplayer cash payout pushers in Big Top Circus and and Surfers Paradise versions. The company has a range of used multiplayer machines, available from the company at various price levels. Three-seater carousel children’s rides on £1 play continue to be very popular in both seaside arcades, and inland play centres. The latest Horse Carousel features two horses that move up and down as the carousel revolves with a fixed carousel for younger children . The Coffee Cup Carousel has three cups that revolve individually as the whole base revolves and both models are fitted with castors for ease of movement around the arcade. Whittakers always have a selection of nearly new or used rides available to suit all budgets.
