POST-SHOW ANALYSIS
While a big proportion of operators are still at the mercy of the weather up to a point, the UK coin-op industry looks to have enjoyed one of the most successful trade shows in recent years, with some tangible signs of recovery in terms of deals being signed, products being sold and new partnerships being made. While the Triennial timing wasn’t totally perfect, several major manufacturers managed to
display new £100 AWP machines which illustrated that the coin-op sector is able to grasp any opportunity it may be given. Seaside operator Chris Oldland’s appraisal from a buyer’s standpoint summed up the mood of the show neatly. He told Coinslot: “I invested heavily at EAG as I think most people have realised that in order to succeed they must first invest in new products. You simply can’t afford to stand still.” While some of the more imposing products

EAG signals bullish attitude permeating coin-op EAG 2014
BACTA stalwart and show chairman Martin Burlin believes that last week’s annual coin-op trade show at ExCeL was about as upbeat and positive as pretty much anyone could have hoped for. ife member of BACTA Martin Burlin, who is chairman of the EAG International, was brimming with positivity on the ExCeL show floor last week.“The people I’ve spoken to have been very positive about the show. One manufacturer, for example, said that in three hours on the first day they surpassed their sales figures for the whole of last year’s event. A plush and redemption gift supplier ran out of iPads to take orders on at one point! The bottom line is that if the product’s right, it will sell,” he stated. Burlin added: “EAG is here to stay and obviously the fact that the stakes and prizes have been changed will encourage more people come down and have a look - it’s certainly an interesting scenario. There are a lot of original products coming through at present. Namco and Sega for example are both very bullish about their products and their prospects, having already debuted a lot of their new machines at IAAPA.” The show chairman revealed that he has had some interesting conversations with single site operators. Many told him that machine sales are holding up, despite the on-going FOBT situation, which is highly encouraging and testament both to their efforts and the quality of the games on offer. He added:“The coin-op sector has got to the stage where it simply has to offer value for money to its customers. From our perspective as show organisers, it’s very pleasing that we’ve got more exhibitors and it’s looking likely that visitor levels are going to rise too.The range of products on display is incredible, from soft toys upwards, and all the products
L
on display cost upwards of £20,000, which is no drop in the ocean for any operator, early feedback would suggest that stakeholders on both sides of the buy/sell fence feel as if EAG International afforded them the best chance to kick-start 2014 in a positive fashion. The show transcended straightforward buying, selling and networking, with the Gambling Commission also reporting a useful three days. The Commission’s machines sector specialist,
Nigel Owen, stated: “We spoke to more than 100 people at our stand, so EAG remains a very efficient way of listening to views from the arcade and manufacturing sectors.” He concluded: “We answered a number of questions on the new stakes and prizes, licensing issues and redemption machines. Some valuable information on allegedly illegal activity was also received and that’s being followed up by our intelligence team.”
a thriving FEC needs are here. Our relationship with BALPPA has certainly helped the show become more diverse.” Burlin accepts that the industry has changed a lot, even in the five years that EAG has been at ExCeL. He disclosed:“People are developing a mindset that their first consideration should be what they can give to the player and that winning money isn’t necessarily all-important.” EAG’s organiser praised industry stakeholders in terms of the way products are promoted, declaring that they are becoming more creative.“Because of this I believe that UK coin-op can have a good future. If a product comes with a good marketing tool that the operator can use then it will do better. Of course, the nature of legislation puts certain restraints on innovation, but both the EAG and the industry is changing inasmuch as we’re all looking at more leisure-based products, such as
soft play and vending for example.” What BACTA is trying to build is effectively a one-stop-shop for all coin-op concerns, revealed Burlin.“This will inevitably bring in more foreign visitors and other more peripheral interests. This will see the show grow even further in terms of exhibitor and visitor numbers. In the same way we as show organisers must know how to treat our customers, industry stakeholders must also know to treat theirs. We are a service industry, after all.” He concluded: “So long as stakeholders can keep on providing products that appeal to players the industry can grow - and be sustainable.”

Baron looks to boost bingo’s fortunes across UK CAMPAIGN
Bingo Association chief executive Miles Baron spoke to Coinslot about the on-going Boost Bingo campaign, which has picked up momentum in recent weeks. iles Baron,CEO,Bingo Association, has revealed that his organisation is “delighted” with the press and media coverage it has had for its Boost Bingo campaign. He told Coinslot:“Both the Coventry Gala and Oldbury Mecca bingo clubs were featured live on Sky and 53 MPs showed up at their local bingo halls to lend their cross-party support. Radio 2 and Radio 5 Live also covered the campaign so in all it was broadcast to around 18 million listeners and viewers.” He added:“We’ll be delivering our petition to the Treasury on 26 February, wait for the Budget and then see what happens.” Baron disclosed that the campaign has had some tremendous empathy from the press and customers. He explained:“I was brought in by the Bingo Association to put some energy and life into it all, as well as promoting membership benefits and the new National Bingo Game, which begins on February 6. Further new products will launch at the end of
M
March. We’ve also agreed the definition of bingo with the Gambling Commission. The bingo industry has really got behind our campaign, from major bingo chains to independent clubs, and I’m currently looking to boost Bingo Association membership levels from last year’s figure of 474, which is going to be a challenge as 17 closed last year.” Baron believes that the ‘blue rinse brigade’ image of bingo is a total misnomer. “While the over-60s tend to play on a lunch time, the evening sessions’ demo-
graphic is at least 15 years younger. The reason why the above myth is perpetuated is that outside observers generally visit bingo on a lunch time.We need to drive those observers to the evening sessions to show them how universal bingo’s appeal is.Bingo has a high social value, but a low social risk. We want to reinforce that. Bingo is at the bottom of the problem gambling league table.” He is also of the view that machine income is vital to all commercial bingo income. “Machine type and mix is as relevant to bingo as any other
machine premises. Bingo has no desire for B2 machines we wouldn’t want them. Machine play dovetails nicely with bingo sessions, but because people can’t play the machines while the bingo is on, there are peaks and troughs in visits. Design, therefore, must be thought through to cope with the fact that there’ll always be high volume periods immediately followed by low volume.” Baron concluded: “On average, one in five bingo customers will play on the machines, so they’re an important part of the retail offer. The emphasis has to be on fun and to this end community gaming has worked superbly as it adds an incredible atmosphere and is attractive to bingo customers. Our ‘new concept’ clubs are working well with their ‘shush-free’ social zones. Our belief is that a fairer VAT regime will drive investment, estate modernisation and brand new clubs. There’ll be a wholesale modernisation. We’re positive campaigners we don’t play the blame game.”

he Ultimate Fan, suppliers of Virtual Racing cabinets, are excited by the prize uplift Tincrease to £100 on Cat C units. “As a company, we feel very positive about the change,” explained Ultimate Fan’s south-west area sales manager, Rex Sargent. “£100 is a much better level than £70. In time, we’ll have the statistics to get the games right and the manufacturers will get there soon enough. They’re significantly happier with the higher jackpot. Sales of Cat C will improve, but slowly at first, and we hope to see a marked difference by the summer.”
PW Sales sees stable pub market DISTRIBUTION
he market for pub gaming machines has remained stable for the past eighteen months, Taccording to the founder of distribution company PW Sales. Although sales have not returned to their pre-recession highs, Paul Wilson believes the sector has entered a period of stabilisation. “I think the closures bottomed out about 12-18 months ago,” he said. “I’ve not seen any decline in machine numbers during the last 12 months,” adding that his last two major products were considered successes for having sold 700 units.
Shake-up at top of Talarius AGCS
igh street operator Talarius has announced two new H appointments.Andy Whitworth takes up the position of head of gaming strategy, and Liam DolanBarr joins as human resources director. Having previously been head of gaming at Talarius,Whitworth returns to the company after four years working across the globe, most recently as head of content strategy at SG Gaming. He will work with Talarius’ machines team to develop a long term gaming strategy. Dolan-Barr, meanwhile, joins the company from Homeserve,
where he spent over three years as group HR and talent director. He has worked across the leisure, retail and financial services sectors. Dolan-Barr will be tasked with implementing and evolving Talarius’ ‘People Agenda’. The appointments follow the launch of a number of staff engagement initiatives, including an employee reward scheme recognising Talarius’ top performing members of staff, a forum entitled ‘Ask Peter’ through which employees can have their opinions heard, and a system geared to rewarding
employees whose ideas and business development suggestions are adopted by the company. In addition, the company recently announced its Venue Development Training Programme, giving all venue staff the skills and knowledge they need to be the best in the industry and enhance the overall operations of the business. The initiatives form part of Talarius’ wider growth strategy to increase its market share by ensuring Quicksilver, Silvers and Winners venues welcome more customers through their doors. Peter Harvey, CEO of Talarius,
said:“Andy has been recruited to build on the strength of the existing machines team and I trust he will ensure that we consistently have great products at the very core of our customer proposition. However, customer experience is defined not only by the products available, but also by the quality of service in our venues. Our team members play a crucial role in ensuring the customers enjoy our facilities, keeping them coming back again and again, and Liam is the right person to make sure that they are equipped with the right skills to meet this challenge.”

Commission confirms changes to stake and prize limits TRIENNIAL
Following the recent DCMS Triennial announcement, the Gambling Commission has confirmed that following a three month government consultation that ended last October, the maximum stake and prize limits of some gaming machines in Great Britain have officially changed. n its latest fortnightly regulatory bulletin, the Gambling Commission has confirmed that following a three month government consultation that ended last October, the maximum stake and prize limits of some gaming machines in Great Britain have changed. Confirming the DMCS statement earlier this month, the bulletin stated: “No objections were received from European Member States to the Categories of Gaming Machine (Amendment) Regulations 2014 within the Department for Culture Media and Sport Triennial Review of Gaming Machine Stake and Prize Limits.” Interestingly, in a footnote regarding the stake
I
and prize levels for fixed odds betting terminals (also known as Category B2 machines), the Commission stated: “Government considers the future of these machines to be unresolved pending further work which is already underway.” The Commission also took the opportunity to remind operators that in submitting regulatory return information for a machine or a terminal that offers games that equate to different machine categories, they are required to submit information based on the highest category of game available. For example, if a terminal offers category B2 and B3 games, operators are advised by the Commission
to count this as a category B2 terminal. For this reason, the B2 figures recently published by the Commission should be viewed with caution as the split between B2
and B3 game play is not clear (and therefore a portion of the GGY attributed to B2 machines will have been generated through B3 game play).
Industry stalwart moves on to pastures new DISTRIBUTORS
s Terry Farr’s current contract with AMG A Leisure draws to a close, he confirmed at EAG International last week that he is leaving to explore new projects. “I was initially only on a year-long consultancy contract with AMG but things went well and we extended it to two,” explained Farr. “Now the time has come for me to spread my wings again and I intend to expand my other business interests including my consultancy company. I would like to thank the team at AMG for a great experience. Together, we have
achieved a lot. The AMG sales team are without doubt one of the best in our industry and are well placed to maximise the new opportunities that came about last year when the company secured major distribution lines, notably Scientific Gaming and Blueprint Gaming.” Farr will use his consid-
erable industry experience gained in the operation, distribution and manufacturing fields He is looking forward to working directly with companies within the coin-op and gaming sectors, as well as brokering agreements with companies looking for strategic partnerships. “This is a very exciting time for me, both personally and professionally,” added Farr. “I’m excited about the new opportunities arising from the industry which has a new air of optimism, as seen at last week’s EAG.” AMG’s joint managing director Mark Sowray stated: “Terry is a wellrespected and long-serv-
ing member of our industry with a great eye for detail and having him on board through these two years has been very helpful.” Alex Auckland, joint MD, added: “Terry’s experience and wealth of knowledge have helped AMG immensely. His boundless energy, enthusiasm and passion for the business have never ceased to amaze us. We have enjoyed working with him.” Terry concluded: “I hold AMG in high esteem, and share their passion for the industry. I would welcome working together again on future projects should the opportunity arise.”

In a joint statement issued by Tracy Damestani, CEO of NCF, and Andrew Love, chairman of the COA, the trade body leaders said: “For some time now we have recognised that NCF and the COA have been promoting very similar agendas. In dialogue with DCMS and the Treasury on issues like taxation, antimoney laundering and stakes and prizes there has been nothing between us and, similarly, at sector meetings with the Commission we have been in agreement . “However, the immediate catalyst for joining the two organisations has been the very strong agreement between us around pursuing the Playing Safe agenda. All our members have expressed support for Playing Safe and developing the industry in line with its principles. Both organisations believe there is much to be gained, both for the industry and for our customers, through Playing Safe and we have concluded that its success is best achieved through a unified trade association speaking with a single determined voice.”
Soundjack music app to hit the high notes at ICE MUSIC
oundnet is gearing-up for next Sweek’s ICE exhibition keen to build on the highly positive momentum achieved following the launch of its soundjack music app and the jukebox deal agreed with operator Gamestec.
Soundnet director James Luck explained: “It has been an upbeat and positive start to 2014 following the conclusion of the landmark agreement with Gamestec which is one of the most significant affecting the market in recent history, and the launch of the soundjack music app which will change the way in which cus-
tomers access music.” He continued: “All of the latest data on mobile commerce shows that the environment is perfect for the introduction of soundjack which enables consumers to select and pay for their music choices using a mobile device. Mobile spending doubled in 2013, up by 138 per cent year-on-year. Of the £11bn spent online in December, 27 per cent of sales
were mobile, worth £3bn, twice as much as in 2012. We are looking forward to taking the soundjack story to ICE, to speak to key customers and pub retailers, to demo the app and show how it will work commercially.” Luck concluded: “We also want to outline the extensive marketing support programme that we will be launching including our social media campaign
which is a central component of what is an aggressive on and off line end-user promotion. ICE is widely regarded as being an event which provides a window on the very latest technology and I am certain that soundjack will sit comfortably at the top table of technology launches at show.” Soundnet will be with Sound Leisure on stand S4-131 at ICE Totally Gaming.

CAMPAIGN
Devon amusement arcade operator has helped the effort to secure emergency funding to repair sea defences at his resort after it was hit by storms in early January. John Martin, managing director of Martin’s Amusements in Westward Ho!, met with his local MP Geoffrey Cox last week to survey the damage and discuss the urgent need for repairs. After the meeting, Cox announced that he had secured an offer of emer-

Government heeds operator’s appeal after storm damage gency funding from the EnvironmentAgency for repairs to the resort’s pebble ridge and sea wall. Martin had been left to pick up the pieces after a tidal surge covered the adventure golf and go-kart track his business operates in stones. Although his amusement arcade escaped any serious flood damage, the serious disruption caused had buoyed
him to spearhead the campaign to address the sea defences. He commented:“If nothing is done I fear not only for my business but for the residents behind it as well.” Martin explained that as well as seeing the stones that form Westward Ho!’s unique pebble ridge shifted over the top of the adventure golf course and go-kart track, resi-
dents had almost been flooded out of their homes. The storm had been unusually strong, he said:“We have high tides and winds before, but this time there was such a swell that the storm seemed to go on for hours. “What can you do? You can’t stand in front of it and push it back, you just have to get up in the morning and pick up the pieces, and that’s basi-
cally what we had to do. “There’s a serious problem with the ridge,in that over the last 10 or 15 years, due to cuts, the local council has not been replenishing it.” Martin revealed he had also concerned about cracks that had developed in the sea wall at the back of the arcade He said:“The last time that happened, in 1990, the next big storm took the sea wall out, so I’m lobbying the council now to replenish the barrier of rocks in front of it. “It’s very hard to get the council down here to get diggers down here to pick them up and replace them – it’s been aware of it for ten years and it hasn’t done it – so we really need intervention from the government to make it happen.” Martin’s business was the first stop on Cox’s tour ofWestward Ho!, and Martin took the opportunity to show Cox the ailing sea wall. He said Cox had previously
been very helpful with efforts to lobby in favour of the amusements industry, and before the meeting Martin had hoped it would be the start of a process that saw Defra or the Environment Agency intervene over the sea defences. Cox said he had spoken to the local council and the Environment Agency and had been assured the village was a priority for action. He commented:“I am also made aware by the Environment Agency that money is available to Torridge District Council to make the needed repairs, and I am therefore urging them to apply immediately for the emergency Environment Agency FCERM Capital Grant. “I will of course do whatever I can to assist them to obtain the necessary finance to protect this valuable stretch of coastline, and will continue to apply pressure on this matter at both a local and national level.”
Positivity prompts an upbeat forecast from Project MARKET PERSPECTIVE
After tidal surges wreaked havoc at his resort, Westward Ho!-based operator John Martin has successfully lobbied Westminster for intervention.

he UK’s low stake gaming sector may well have redisTcovered its Mojo, if the conversations on the Project stand at EAG are anything to go by. Speaking to Coinslot the day after EAG closed, Project managing director Tony Boulton enthused: “Talking with the machine buyers and company principals on our stand at EAG, I was genuinely encouraged by the prevailing mood of optimism This industry has a proud record of speaking its mind and I definitely felt both at the time and on reflection that the glass is half full as far as the prospects for 2014 are concerned.” He added: “I would say that at least 70 per cent of the people that we had conversations with are much more confident than they were 12 months ago and believe that the economy is beginning to turn around with a positive impact on
their businesses. This is a very different position than at the start of 2013 when I think we struggled to find more than a handful of optimists. Clearly the introduction of £100 is an important factor but I think there's more to it than just a change in regulation; it's more fundamental and more real than that.” Boulton concluded: “Last year product conversations were quite difficult, however this year the industry wanted to talk, was keen to explore possibilities and to look to the future. Value for money was at the top of the business agenda both in terms of their capital investment decisions but also the delivery of a positive, affordable gaming experience to players. The industry is a much happier place when it can look forward with some energy and optimism and I'm confident that the momentum of EAG will dovetail into ICE and that we can help to reinvigorate the Category C sector which, when all is said and done, is the driver of low stake gaming in this country.”

It was the first time a pay and display machine had been installed in the grounds of the bingo hall since it opened in 1996. than £5,000 in just two weeks. Three men drilled into slot machines in Plymouth and across the South West in a systematic scam, Plymouth Crown Court was told. Ashley Wise, Joseph Lambert and Tony Bailey also used soldering irons to insert a device into the machines to increase the odds of the machines paying out. Wise admitted six offences of theft and two of attempted theft in August and September 2009. The court heard the trio walked away with £5,571 from arcades in Plymouth, Exeter,Torquay,Bodmin and Newquay. One of their victims was Winners Amusements in Plymouth, which they targeted three times. Alistair Verheijen, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said an expert who viewed CCTV footage believed that the gang inserted a device in the machines which interfered with their internal mechanisms. He said: “It allowed them to obtain an unusually high proportion of winnings.” He said they escaped with between £300 and £1,600 from each arcade. The court heard that Wise had eventually handed himself in after failing to turn up at court. He was held in custody for four days before being granted bail. Judge Paul Darlow stated that he was bound to pass a sentence similar to that imposed on Bailey and Lambert and that the offence was “premeditated and sophisticated”. He handed Wise a 12 month community order with 300 hours unpaid work and ordered him to pay £890 towards prosecution costs

2014 marks Playnation’s first birthday having completed its management buyout on February 8, 2013, backed by Palatine Private Equity. The firm’s Adam Hodges spoke to Alex Lee at the EAG.
t’s been a very exciting and challenging 12 months for Playnation, during which it has shown encouraging business growth - and moved head office from Warrington to Runcorn. Since last February, the firm has taken on over 30 new members of staff, many of which in senior management positions, added a new finance team and brought in new financial management systems. The operator now employs over 300 people and has evolved as a busi-

ness in that time. Managing director Adam Hodges explained: “This year, we’re planning to expand into more UK markets. 2013 was all about foundation setting. We now have a presence in over 120 holiday parks, 80 bowling complexes and every motorway service station apart from the Extra chain. When you consider that each UK motorway effectively has two venues - one either side of the carriageway - that amounts to approximately 140 venues. We’re also in over 800 pet stores in the UK. We arranged a distribution deal with the US firm Hillman, which manufactures pet tag engraving machines. We’ve also got one in Harrods.” Furthermore, Playnation recently opened five new Gamedecks in Birmingham International Airport - these range from standalone FECs to hybrid AGC/FECs or simply as showcase areas for new machines. Hodges added: “We’re always looking to position ourselves in areas which enjoy high levels of footfall. Last year, ninety million people went through the UK airports that we operate in,50 million visited the holiday parks that we serve and 17 million people enjoyed themselves in the bowling alleys we provide machines for. It’s all about the footfall and exposure.” Playnation’s business is all about partnerships, which Hodges believes is better than a more straight-
forward customer/supplier relationship. He continued: “We’ve evolved and set a good foundation upon which to build in 2014. We’ve strengthened the management team and we strongly believe that there are plenty of opportunities in the UK market for us. The novelty side of the coin-op business is exciting, especially prizeorientated machines. We’ll be looking at all sorts of venues, including cinemas and shopping malls - basically any location that has dwell time but hasn’t perhaps maximised its floor space. We’ll put products there and create value for money experiences for families.” Playnation tries to take more of a retail approach to family entertainment by investing in space.“We identify who the audience is first and then create hotspots which will increase dwell time.We believe in presenting a fun, value for money experience to families and help make their leisure time a more attractive, viable option.” Hodges concluded:“We measure our success in terms of turnover - that tells us how healthy our business is. Over the last 6-8 months we’ve seen some very encouraging signs. The green shoots of recovery seem to be staying. The UK marketplace is a healthy one, but to succeed you have to go out there and compete in order to provide value for money to families.”
project began in October 2013, less than ninety days before its official release. “To turn this around in two and half months is incredible,” said Chris Black, managing director of Sound Leisure. “I don’t think there’s anyone else in Europe that could have done this.” The jukebox features a number of innovative fea-
tures, including Music Spider, a recommendation service that pulls in data from partner Last.fm. Users can also select tracks from any singles chart since the Top 40s inception in 1969. Each device will also be hooked up to the Soundjack app, which allows customers to select songs using their smartphone.

£1.2m ride set for summer launch at Drayton Manor
Worthing FEC calls on critics to support roof plans FEC
Management at The Lido Family Entertainment Centre have called on Facebook critics to remove negative comments about plans for a retractable roof.
he Lido Family Entertainment Centre in Worthing has hit back in the face of criticism of its plans for a new a £1.25m retractable roof. Some residents of the seaside resort took to social media site Facebook to demand that the FEC instead reinstate the swimming pool that was built over in 1990. Manager Martin Barrett took to Worthing Lido’s own Facebook page to call on those making negative comments to retract them. He wrote:“We appreciate people have opinions, but it has proved impossible to tolerate the level of blatant negative propaganda. Therefore we kindly ask for false statements to be removed from certain Facebook group pages. “This will avoid endangering all possible funding and the need for us to pursue legal action and compensa-

tion. Comments like these are damaging to The Lido and for Worthing as a tourist destination to gain additional visitors.” It is hoped the retractable roof would help turn the FEC into a yearround attraction that would double the number of visitors,as well as create 30 to 50 part-time and full-time jobs. With funding coming from the government’s Coastal Communities Fund, it would be built by the same company that designed structures for The O2, London Zoo, Lord’s cricket ground and London 2012 venues. Plans for the roof have been submitted to Worthing Borough Council and if permission is granted, work is scheduled to start in the autumn and be completed in two weeks. Joe Skilton, manager of Worthing Lido’s amusement arcade, told local press that a swimming pool would not be as popular as the rides cur-
rently housed on the site. He commented:“The rides do draw in a lot of people during the winter. If there was a pool there would be noone here at all.” Able to withstand winds of up to 90 miles per hour, the roof would operate via weather sensors and be capable of closing in minutes. Once in place, the area within the lido could also be used for Christmas fares and even a temporary ice rink during the off season. Philippa Bradbury, the FEC’s PR and marketing manager, urged people to support it:“The pool closed down in the first place because it was making a big loss.As a business model it doesn’t work. “If we don’t get the money for the roof, which we won’t without public support, it will go to another town. It won’t go to somewhere else in Worthing.”

Three days of the best coin-op has to offer From 21-23 January, EAG International 2014 enjoyed some brisk business at ExCeL London, with visitors from all over the world flocking to experience the latest innovations from over 180 manufacturers and service providers. JANUARY 31 - FEBRUARY 6, 2014
ccording to exhibition chairman Martin Burlin, EAG International was born in 2010 because there was a desire from within our industry for a focused show which gave the industry its own identity. He added: “In today’s fast-moving business environment it’s possible to be pulled in a variety of directions as new opportunities arise. Sometimes it’s good to stop, reflect, and remember what we set out to do.” The show, organised by the industry for the industry, featured a number of brand new product launches in several sectors, including the latest 4D immersive video theatres, amusements, vending, redemption games and systems, prize merchandize, kiddie rides and a wide range of the latest licensed and generic plush. Furthermore, many UK single site, AGC and seaside operators with adult-only areas made a beeline to the show with the intention of seeing

which manufacturers had reacted quickest to the new opportunity offered by the Triennial announcement. Amazingly, several UK-based manufacturers revealed site-ready £100 prize AWP equipment in a bid to prove that the sector can still innovate and deliver at the drop of a hat. Triennial notwithstanding, virtually every exhibitor on the show floor managed to bring something new to the event, including several strong global brands which debuted European releases. In addition to the UK-based majority, exhibitors travelled from Belgium, China, Germany, Italy, Northern Ireland, Poland, San Marino, Spain, Taiwan, Turkey and the UAE. EAG International’s prominence and timing encouraged a number of associations and other industry groups to hold meetings and special events at the show, achieving remarkably efficient use
of time for attendees. BACTA’s stand, for example, right at the entrance of the show, proved to be a busy meeting point for industry stakeholders seeking advice and collaboration. Proving that coin-op can move with the times as much as any other creative industry, the show’s website kept visitors up to speed with the latest product news and there were up-to-the minute bulletins from exhibitors on Twitter using the EAG hashtag. With many operators feeling cautiously optimistic about prospects for 2014, early indications show increased investment in equipment and ancillary products. Overall, EAG International’s pre-show aim of gathering the latest and best products under one roof, enabling purchasers to make informed choices and secure the best possible return on their investments looks to have borne fruit.

biquitous video game character Pac-Man took centre stage for Bandai Namco at EAG, with several branded U games on show, including the new spin on air hockey Pac-Man Smash. It was well supported by a number of high-impact, high-octane redemption, amusement, novelty and video games, many of which were being shown to a UK audience for the first time. In the video game sector, some of the more eye-catching pieces were a fourplayer Batman game, a four-player Mario Kart, the imposing Mach Storm and the latest incarnation of the Alpine Racer series. Bandai Namco has made a major shift to redemption and prize vending in the 2000s and this was exemplified by the striking ‘blizzard collector’ Snow Down, which comes from Jennison and was voted machine of the year at IAAPA, and Jelly Bean Factory, which according to Bandai Namco’s John Brennan is the only prize dispenser than can cope with 8kg buckets.

People want it on immediate test. We understand this because £100 is a brand new concept. All we know is that we’re heading in the right direction with all our in-house productions. This one in particular illustrates that we believe we can breathe new life into mechanical Cat C product. We see Ten or Ton as an affordable three-player.”

There’s a lot to follow up on,” he continued.“The coastal guys are wellserved by us, with Elaut’s Wizard of Oz coin pusher being one of our more recent acquisitions. We’ve got pretty much everything for the family arena - pushers, cranes, redemption and Cat D.We do of course also have plenty for the gaming side in Cats C and B3. FUTURELOGIC PUSHING FOR A TITO REVOLUTION perators visiting the FutureLogic stand got a taste of how to convert their entire venue to a ticket-out O system, simply by adding new components to their existing machines. The company’sTicket to Go product comes in a variety of forms, capable of being built directly into newer machines or fitted to older devices as a bolt-on box.Operators can also reduce staffing costs by installing a redemption machine which pays out to customers as they input winning tickets. FutureLogic’s developers have been hard at work adapting Ticket to Go to fit with the various different protocols active throughout the UK market, with the product having already in venues across the country.
ALL SYSTEMS GO avid Stenning from Embed enthused about a“cracking” EAG show for the machine management and redempD tion system specialist.“We took a lot of orders - we’re taking significant numbers - actually on the stand on Tuesday and Wednesday which is very unusual.” Stenning put Embed’s success down to the quality of its products.“Even our prototypes have been very well received. We’ve seen quite a few new faces. The Quantum machine management system is always a good attraction, but our RedemptionPro, which brings order and accountability to redemption operations, has seen a lot of interest from holiday parks.” Embed has made a concerted effort to expand its product range to service the broader entertainment market and to this end the firm has picked up several customers which had shown an interest in the last two years but hadn’t previously committed to placing orders.

Essential Guide to ... ICE 2014 Perspective
ICE is like having the Vegas show on your doorstep - but bigger! With members of the UK’s low stake gaming industry making the journey to Vegas in search of inspiration, Kate Chambers, Portfolio Director responsible for ICE tells Coinslot that a trip to ExCeL London next week will provide a potentially year-changing, inspirational window on the entire world of gaming. hat type of visitor chooses to come to ICE? ICE attracts all types of visitors from all sectors of gaming and from all parts of the world. However, if I had to categorise the typical ICE visitor it’s someone who wants to take their business forward, who is receptive to new ideas, who wants to gain first mover advantage and be ahead of the game. They are hands-on entrepreneurs.
W
How does ICE 2014 measure up? Taking account of the companies sharing stands and our friends in the international media we will have in excess of 500 exhibiting companies drawn from some 57 countries at ExCeL next week: this figure compares to 481 from 55 countries in 2013. The stand space comprises 55,000 sqm, a 12% increase on last year, making ICE 2014 the biggest gaming event in the world. Quoting statistics in isolation can be somewhat random, but in practical terms it means that when visitors come to ICE they see the entire world of gaming,in three days all under one roof. No industry operates in isolation and if exhibitions are about being inspired then there’s no better place to

spend two or three days than ICE. The marketing theme for 2014 is SENSATIONAL how does ICE live up to this billing? I am often asked what makes ICE such an important and valued event in the gaming industry calendar. One of the fascinating characteristics is there’s always a gamechanging piece of genius that appears at the event without any prior knowledge or fan fares of publicity — that’s certainly part of the intrigue. The thousands of people who make the journey to ICE also experience the entire world of gaming covering betting, bingo, casino, lottery, mobile, online, street and social gaming in what is the world’s biggest gaming space. There’s no doubt that ICE delivers a really comprehensive take on gaming from a global perspective and with that, the ability to identify trends and products from every corner of the world in a way that no other gaming event can. One of the aspects of our Totally Gaming week which sometimes gets overlooked, is the ICE Conferences programme which has become widely recognised as the best in gaming. It is an opportunity to

The Vivid Interface research showed that exhibitors held on average 52 business meetings at ICE,a figure, which when applied across all 2013 exhibitors, totals some 25,012 commercial gatherings. Vivid’s Geoffrey Dixon said:“From my experience gained researching across the exhibition industry, such a level of commercial activity is near the very top of the spectrum, with the aggregate value of the deals agreed at ICE being worth many hundreds of millions of dollars. ICE is unique in that it is both a business and an information exchange event which results in a very senior tranche of chief executives, thought leaders and buyers with absolute authority. The exhibitors told us in interviews that this is a very potent audience profile and one that sets ICE apart from other events in the gaming space”. “ ICE is the meeting place of choice for the international gaming community and the challenge for visitors is to ensure that they are able to meet with the exhibitors they want to do business with and clearly the best way to achieve that is to arrange meetings in advance of the exhibition opening rather than simply leaving it to chance on arrival.ICE is simply too popular an event to risk missing out.”

TUF Developments continues to build worldwide profile New products and a new director has seen TUF Developments cultivating an increasingly prominent international presence. UF Developments, a sister company of distributor The Ultimate Fan, has seen rapid growth in its coin-op manufacturing and export business since the addition of Dave Wright as operations director. During 2013, the company created new products both alone and by joining forces with other companies owned by Ultimate Fan founders, Dean Gourlay and Ian Walters. “Dave Wright joining TUF Developments as operations director brought a huge amount of experience in many different territories and many different products,” said Gourlay. Wright’s international expertise has paid off in the form of a major order to build kiosks for the US market and the company are hopeful that this initial export will lead to even greater things. Dave Wright highlighted the differences between operating in the UK and US, noting that one of the biggest differentiators is “scale, because what can seem small initially becomes massive numbers very quickly if successful.” “TUF developments was born as a way for The TUF Group to not only have more control of its own destiny,” said

Wright, “but also to enable us to respond to customer’s requests and current and future market trends in the coin op industry. We have had a great start in manufacturing,” he said, “winning the contract to build Cat C analogue machines for Crown Direct, our own adept cabinet and kiosks manufactured for Inspired Gaming.” The Inspired Gaming machines will be launched at ICE 2014, two weeks after the successful debut of their Adept cabinet at EAG. The device was created in partnership with Walters and Gourlay’s UK-centric manufacturer Syco Gaming and was the centre of attention for many attendees. “EAG was very productive with incredibly good feedback,” said Wright. The company has received enquiries about the Adept from as far away as Central America, with plans afoot to export the machine to this growing market. This forms part of TUF Developments’ focus on introducing their gaming products to markets around the world. During 2014 the company will be attending the Irish and Australasian Gaming Shows, as well making a debut appearance

Comment Dare to dream
“
alex lee comment ery positive atmosphere within the hall”; “Positive feeling about the future”;“ The people that were here because they wanted to be and were interested in what people had, rather than just being at another show”; “Genuinely it’s been fantastic”- all of these are actual quotes from EAG International exhibitors. I could have filled the whole of this column with similar sentiments, but even I’m not that lazy. Despite, literally, one or two minor grumbles about a preference for central London, the overwhelming response to last week’s EAG International was positive, bright and optimistic. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve listed the challenges the coin-op industry has faced in recent years in my short time as editor of Coinslot International, so I’m delighted that I can report something genuinely positive - an industry that is, for once, looking on the bright side and blinking enthusiastically at some seriously strong light at the end of the tunnel. Obviously, the hard work is only just beginning, not just from a sales perspective, not just from an optimal positioning on arcade floor view and not just from maximising the new opportunities that
V
the recent stake and prize uplifts have brought. I’m talking about underlining the importance of coin-op entertainment as a vital pastime in the UK and something that is of high cultural value and importance. We’ve all heard about seaside (and high street) regeneration, and UK coinop stakeholders have placed themselves among the most powerful voices with regard to the above, helped in no small part to the consistent and persistent lobbying done by BACTA. The next step for UK coin-op, as far as I’m concerned, is in retaining its relevance in the digital age. Obviously, several high-profile deals have been done at EAG and all of those augur well for the long-term future of the sector. The bottom line is that if stakeholders stop believing in their ability to create, innovate and present coin-op in a way that is relevant to today’s target demographics - and fail to identify exactly what those demographics are, that is when the wider industry will suffer some serious setbacks. Having walked the EAG show f loor for the duration last week, however, none of the above looks remotely likely - and that is testament to the tenacity and determination of our sector.
“Positive vibes for the UK coin-op sector right here”

alex lee media watch he owner of one of Burnham’s most iconic landTmarks is hoping to celebrate its 100th anniversary with a £100,000 revamp, according to the Burnham & Highbridge Weekly News. Pavilion manager Louise Parkin is hoping to install a £60,000 high-tech folding roof and other improvements to the tune of £40,000 to ensure Burnham’s pavilion attracts crowds for another 100 years. She told the paper: “The idea has been in the pipeline for a while but we decided this was the year to do it. We get no grant funding whatsoever and we’ve invested the money ourselves to ensure the business continues to be sustainable. We’ve tried to maintain the traditional character of the pavilion within the design but we’ve also had to move with the times. If planning permission is
granted in February then we will soon have a wet weather facility in Burnham which can accommodate a coach load of visitors. In the summer we open until 10pm, meaning people can dine at the pier in the evening.” The 35ft rood is split into two halves that meet in the middle and can be easily retracted at the push of a button. The extra cover will allow the business to invest more in children’s rides and family entertainment. The revamp is hoped to complement ‘Project Coach’ which aims to encourage more visitors to Burnham. Parkin also wants to employ another four full-time and four part-time staff next year if the project gets the green light. It is hoped the new system can be installed around Easter for the new holiday season. A celebration event will be
held in June to mark the centenaries of local Brownie packs and Parkin wants to hear from pensioners in Burnham who would like to celebrate their 100th birthday at the pavilion. Elsewhere, numbers may not be up for former bingo hall in Flint, according to The Leader. Flint councillor Alex Aldridge said he was confident the town’s former Palace Bingo and Social Club would be bought and used as a commercial property again. The hall, which closed suddenly in November 2010 and has been empty ever since, is located by the A5119, a major junction into the town. Cllr Aldridge said bringing the hall back into use would form “the last piece in the jigsaw” in the redevelopment of Flint. He said: “The [bingo] hall can have an important

“It’s been very good actually. The first couple of days there were a good number of enquiries and like the last couple of years, the people that were here because they wanted to be and were interested in what people had, rather than just coming in on the back of being at another show.” JOHN VALLIS, UK SALES DIRECTOR, SUZO-HAPP
“Very good. Very busy. It’s been positive for us as well as people coming over to see us especially. Not just walking past. They’ve made a special trip to come and see us, so it’s been great in that respect.”

future if we can encourage the right individual to come there. I’m proud of the way we are driving the regeneration and we would really like to round it off [with the hall]. It’s the last piece in the jigsaw if we can get that refurbished, it’ll be a complete job.” The Grade II-listed venue was originally built in 1951 to house the Plaza cinema, but was used as a bingo hall for more than 30 years. Cllr Aldridge said its listed status may cause some problems for potential bidders. He said: “A challenge for any potential opportunity in there is the fact it is a listed building. The front of it is listed building and part of the inside is also listed so any potential persons coming there would have to take care of that. Some of the seating in there is part of the listing criteria,
so that just slightly complicates any potential bidders.” Rumours have been circulating on the social networking website Facebook about what the building could be converted into, with some hoping it would be converted back to a cinema. But Cllr Aldridge said it was unlikely this would happen, due to a lack of footfall. He added: “We have one or two people interested and we have put them in the direction of the Welsh Government to look into grant funding. If anybody is interested, please step forward - we know the building has huge potential.” Estate agent Gareth Williams Commercial Property Consultants said the building could be used in its current form, converted for alternative leisure use or redeveloped. It confirmed the
building was still on the market, and said there had been some interest in the property. The property, believed to be owned by Rhyl-based Parker’s Leisure Holdings, has been on the market for £250,000 since early in 2011. The sales brochure describes the venue as “a traditional excinema building latterly utilised as a bingo social club with a full inventory of trade fixtures and equipment available if required”.
Irish gaming expert and organiser of the up-coming Dublin show John Purcell spoke to Coinslot at the recent EAG International about a seismic shift about to happen in the Irish gaming industry.
john purcell politics a lot of excitement about the upcoming legislation this year. All Tbeinghere’s well, the new regulations should be in place by September backed by a regulatory body or at worst an interim regulatory body. Operators are wondering what the new licensing conditions are going to be and how their existing operations will be affected. There’ll be a completely new culture pervading Ireland when the new law comes in regarding compliance and licensing - people are going to have to thoroughly adjust the way they work. Nevada-licensed products are already coming through to Ireland’s existing casinos. The first Aristocratmanufactured product, for example, arrived recently. The big opportunity under the new gambling laws, however, will be in the pub and bookmakers sectors. In Ireland, there are approximately 7,500 pubs, so that’s a potential new market for 15,000 machines whereas there are 4,000 bookmakers so there’ll be a potential market for 16,000 machines. The Irish coin-op and gaming market, therefore, has suddenly become very important. Forty new casino licences (will) have been granted too, and each of these will be permitted up to 25 jackpot machines each with unlimited stakes and prizes. There will be a street gaming market the likes of which Ireland has never seen, full of totally new product. The likeliest source of this new influx will of course be the UK, but Central and Eastern European manufacturers are keeping a close eye on developments as we’re in the Euro zone. It is my belief that existing operators will either sell out or expand. There is no pub tie in Ireland - each pub is effectively an individual location - so the rush for sites will be like an Irish gold rush. It’s already happening - there’s a lot of activity. While I’m organiser of the Irish
gaming show on March 4-5, I’m more about selling Ireland as a concept than selling the show, which is now in its 35th year, making it one of the world’s longest-established gaming trade events. We want to make an equal contribution to the needs of operators, distributors and manufacturers and as part of this commitment we’ll be bringing in a leading legal speaker as part of the overall show package. While there has been a huge desire for modern gaming legislation in Ireland, the governmental wheels have turned slowly, but this has always been the case. The positive news is that the regulation has been based on key elements of UK, US and the most wellestablished European gaming jurisdictions. I’m not saying it will be perfect, but it will be based on regulation rather than prohibition, which is very important. It’s been segmented very well, so there will be a number of different gaming licences to suit the various sectors. The new laws will take into account good business practise, public interest and social responsibility with a view to creating a sustainable gaming industry in Ireland. As soon as the regulator came in, it went out of the government’s hands, so there will be no chopping and changing as different governments come and go.This is Primary Enabling Legislation assembled by a totally transparent regulatory environment. I do believe traditional operators, who have been used to self-regulation for 25 years or more, may find it tough adapting to the new regime, but in my view the opportunities far outweigh any downsides. The whole process in drafting the new laws has been very inclusive,100 per cent transparent and accountable. It will see a massive influx of new machines, higher stakes and prizes and lots of new (pub and bookmaker) locations.
