EAG confirms its dates for 2015 SHOWS
fter an EAG International widely considered the most positive and successful in the show’s five year history, the dates have now been confirmed for the 2015 edition. The show will take place on January 13-15 2015 at ExCel London, following the signing of a new agreement with the venue’s owners. EAG International chairman Martin Burlin commented: “We have worked hard with ExCel London to find dates that we have been able to fix for a number of years and as EAG International will be the only event occupying ExCel during this period there will be a number of benefits including the ability to negotiate much better prices with the campus hotels.” Having just closed the doors on its fifth show, EAG International is firmly established as the ‘must-attend’ event for those seeking the very latest products and services for the amusements and attractions sectors. EAG 2014 showcased over 180 manufacturers, attracting a record number of industry buyers and other professionals from 63 countries.

Pub tie continue POLITICS
Greg Mulholland MP, chairman of the parliamentary Save The Pub Group, was unequivocal in his views on the Punch Taverns debt situation. He stated: “It is deeply worrying that the chief executive of Punch Taverns is simply refusing to answer vital questions about the £22.6m of their tenants’ deposits that they wrongly don’t hold separately and securely. I asked Stephen Billingham if he would act to rectify this, and to separate the deposits to ensure they would be safe, but in typical Punch style he has simply ignored the question.” He added: “Whatever Punch does now to restructure its problems the astonishing level of debt remains, gained through the reckless over acquisition and securitisation model that made a few City boys filthy rich. We must now see a decisive end to the discredited, unsustainable and

ontinues to cause controversy
Future uncertain for major pub company SINGLE SITE
Pubco Punch Taverns has failed to convince lenders to back a plan for tackling its £2.3bn debt mountain, a development which will be closely followed by operators in the single site sector. ajor pub company Punch Taverns has admitted defeat over its debt plan, with the prospect of the company falling into administration putting pub landlords’deposits at risk and asking questions about the future for the single site operators who currently supply machines to the pubco’s 4,000-strong estate. Punch’s attempt to convince lenders to back a plan for tackling its £2.3bn debt mountain failed despite a strong case put forward. Britain’s second-biggest pubco, which has over 4,000 leased and tenanted pubs, bowed to bondholder pressure by agreeing to cancel a vote on the proposals due to take place last week. It will now reopen talks with lenders in a bid to achieve a ‘consensual restructuring’ in the best interests of all stakeholders by mid-April. In a plea to bondholders last week, executive chairman Stephen Billingham (pictured) warned the company faced uncertainty unless the restructuring proposals were accepted. He said the company had spent 14 months trying to find a solution ‘to accommodate all of the conflicting views’. There are 16 different classes of debt within Punch’s two property company subsidiaries. Some bondholder groups expressed concern that the existing proposals were skewed in favour of shareholders and would still leave the company heavily in debt. Billingham said in an interview with the Daily Telegraph that there would be a ‘mess’ if the vote was not passed, adding:“I have real concerns that nobody has an alternative out there that is realistic or sensible.” Thousands of pub landlords could lose up to £22.6m were Punch Taverns to fall into adminis-

unjustifiable pubco tied business model which has also destroyed and closed thousands of valued British pubs.” The debate about the pub tie, especially with regard to the related business model of single site operation within, has rumbled on for years now, with CAMRA being vocal in
their efforts to have the tie reformed and a Parliamentary debate using evidence from BAPTO occurring in 2009. The outcome of the Punch Taverns case could potentially see major changes in how the pub tie works going forward and indeed the single site operating landscape.
ation ‘Storms’ into ome Break offering even further.” Storm terminals operate on Inspired Gaming’s Open SBG Core platform which provides access to content from leading providers such as Inspired, Blueprint, and SG Gaming. The state of the art machines have high definition screens and TITO operation with a single cash out position, offering greater security for operators. Established in 2013 following an MBO from Inspired Gaming, Playnation is the UK market Playnation, said:“It’s great to be leader for FECs. It currently operable to push Storm, one of our ates machines in over 1,000 locamost advanced terminals, to a tions, within holiday parks, wider audience. We’ve had a great bowling alleys, airports, and relationship withWelcome Break motorway service stations, for over 20 years now, so we’re including Butlins, Haven, Park pleased to be building on that and Resorts, Parkdean, Moto, Roadto be increasing their customer chef and Tenpin.
tration. Tenants had to pay on average £6,279 in deposits to rent their pubs from Punch, which has an estate of around 4,300 pub and bars. The money is used to cover any damage during the tenancy. But Punch has not ring-fenced the deposits and it is likely they will be lost if the firm calls in administrators. With the firm’s ‘final proposals’ for a financial restructuring rejected by the pension funds the business could be pushed into defaulting on its loans. If this happens, the £22.6m in deposits,
which are effectively on loan to Punch, would be at risk. Any administration process would take 44 days. A Punch statement read: “As previously announced, both securitisations will default without a consensual restructuring. The board remains of the view that a consensual restructuring is in the best interests of all stakeholders and can be agreed ahead of the next covenant reporting date of 15 April 2014. It is not possible to ring-fence deposits because the terms of the securitisations established more than a decade ago prevent this.Tenants should not be concerned. It is extremely unlikely they will lose their deposits.” Single site operators across the UK will be watching developments with bated breath, as the last thing the sector needs right now is uncertainty concerning approximately 4,000 sites, even of a temporary nature.

MANUFACTURERS
Reflex Gaming, one of the pre-eminent manufacturers of gaming machines for the UK pub retail, arcade and bingo sectors, has secured a new entree into Europe with a partnership with Elam in the Netherlands. n a move that extends its reach into Europe, UK manufacturer Reflex Gaming will supply system software and manufacturing to Dutch company Elam. The arrangement will see Elam add its own games to the offering with the first machine for the Netherlands currently under development. “We used ICE to formally announce our partnership with Elam and they used our stand to demonstrate the wide range of Reflex skill sets to their customers, including the new cabinet,” said managing director Quentin Stott.“Both companies are excited about our first game which we are developing together which will be released in the second half of 2014,” he added. Reflex Gaming exhibited for the second time at the ICE show with its most comprehensive range of products to date. The Atom cabinet, which has a die-cast aluminium

frame, is new this year for the Category C sector. The slimline frame offers maximum artwork space, allowing Reflex greater flexibility in games design.Atom is the result of a year’s worth of research and development. “The Atom cabinet will enable Reflex to continue to make progress in the Category C pub retails sector, added Stott.“We’re making a significant level of investment in the people, technology and hardware to serve the sector,” he added. Reflex Gaming revealed a range of new Category C machines designed especially for the £100 jackpot as well as three new B4 machines, with the new £2 stake, £400 jackpot club machines. Starlight, is also new this year, it is a videobased, four-game compendium targeted squarely at the AGC and bingo sectors with Category C content. The development of Starlight follows on from the success of Reflex’s range of
reel-based games for the low stake, low prize sector, also housed in the eye-catching Mini Cabinet. The ICE show was an important shop window for the Newark-based company which also showed its unique social gaming App at the show, which offers a compendium of 14 UK specific games, which are variants of successful land-based titles, including Alice’s Wonderland and Lady Luck Double Take. The games come from the pub, club, easy play (arcade and bingo) and casino sectors. This is the first compendium App from Reflex and the combination of proven landbased games and Facebook and Twitter integration to increase credits, has gone down extremely well with players. “Our reach has grown significantly week on week since we launched this App in October last year,” concluded Stott.
The Return of Pharaoh’s Gold DISTRIBUTORS
R
LMS Sales is all set to add to its portfolio of Super Nova Games’ successful products, with the launch of Pharaoh’s Gold SWP. The firm has high expectations for this model. Phil Boulton, MD, explained why. “We’ve had two tremendous
years with Skill Ball Zingy which was an example of Supernova Games breathing new life into an iconic game. With Pharaoh’s Gold, we believe this pattern will be repeated. It’s very much a ‘Return to Pharaoh’s Gold’, as this was a highly successful video/SWP over 10 years ago. However, Dave
Jones and his team have worked their magic with a brand new Cabinet, Stunning new graphics and video content. It really is captivating to play and will be an asset to any high footfall area, whether that be leisure or retail.” Based on £1 play, players have to use their skill in shooting coins to
drop them into a Pot of Gold, as well as other symbols which can either award added time or cash. As Gold coins are collected in the Pot, other symbols have to be avoided which could empty the Pot of Gold. At the end of the allotted time, there is a further game of skill, whereby the player has to shoot a
swinging pendulum target in order to release the winnings. Success increases with practice. Kevin Bottrill, sales executive, added: “I had a lot of interest in this from a variety of operators who had either operated them in the past and were blown away by this new version or many who were
seeing it for the first time. FECs, bowling alleys, holiday parks, cinemas, motorway services or even shopping centres would all make excellent venues for Pharaoh’s Gold. We took a number of orders at the show for the first production run, which we’re due to deliver just prior to Easter.”

Kirby calls for renewed London shows debate MANUFACTURERS
SM’s Alex Kirby has called for the organisers of ICE and EAG to get together to N discuss the opportunity of the two shows
BILL
ast week, Hippodrome owner L Simon Thomas deliv-
ered a “bill” to transport union leader Bob Crow at the RMT headquarters for the sum of £200,000,000. This was on behalf of businesses throughout the West End who had lost revenue due to the tube strike, which also coincided with the timing of the ICE Totally Gaming Show. Thomas stated that Crow might think again about endangering jobs and causing chaos throughout London if he had to pay for the consequences out of his own pocket.
running side-by-side in order for exhibitors to benefit from a footfall-heavy three days without the expense of exhibiting twice in the space of a couple of weeks. The Leeds-based jukebox specialist told Coinslot:“While we don’t necessarily fit perfectly into either show, as in my view the EAG is more seaside operator-facing, while the ICE show is more for the international market and casinos, I believe that a joint event would be the ideal solution for the industry, or failing that a return to the centre of London in Olympia.” Kirby believes that the timing of the current EAG is too close to Christmas and that having exhibited at both EAG and ICE this year he noticed that there was enough available space at ExCel during ICE to “comfortably accommodate both shows”. While the timing and location of 2015’s incarnation of EAG International has already been confirmed for 13-15 January at ExCel, Kirby believes that unless EAG and ICE combine, or the former relocates to central London in years to come, EAG could “fall flat, like the Norbreck Castle event in Blackpool”. He explained:“I’m not saying EAG is a bad show as such, and I get on well with Swan Events’ Karen Cooke, but I think the industry would benefit from the organisers of ICE and EAG getting together and running a joint event. It would have much more of a ‘Wow’ factor.” Kirby also believes that, at the very least, some sort of promotional event or spectacle that would attract additional footfall on the EAG show’s traditionally quiet final day should be considered. In marked contrast to the general wave of optimism in the immediate aftermath of EAG, Kirby concluded:“I strongly believe that other people feel the same way as I do and that this really needs to be said, even if it means stirring up a bit of a hornet’s nest.”
COMMENTARY
I
t’s a very interesting view. But a tough ask given the highly politicised background to the separation and subsequent divorce between the coin-op and traditional casino shows way back when. The war, in the Noughties, revolved around one partition wall and an escalator on the Earls Court floor - backed up, one has to say, by some extremely embarrasing and naive arguments on both sides. It wasn’t the UK industry’s finest moment - for a whole host of reasons, not least of all because it showed itself as a weak, divisive, antiquated and negative sector. But the ultimate irony out of all of that acrimony is that both shows have flourished in their separation. Whilst EAG is not - and never will be - the ATEI of ten or twenty years ago, the industry is simply so very different to that now. However, it is a well run, well serviced and energetic forum for the UK amusements industry. And ICE - well, it has quite literally become a gaming and gambling giant on the world stage. It has kept London at the top table in the gaming world, and that’s good for everyone in the industry. Whether the two shows are now as compatible as Alex Kirby and many others would like them to be, that’s for the tens of thousands of visitors and hundreds of exhibitors to determine. Suffice to say that there is a great deal of sense in what messrs Kirby and one assumes many others suggest. But this is business, and a huge dollop of politics. And in truth, neither have mixed very well in the past. Having said that, one would like to think that this is also a new dawn of a new era. There’s more confidence in the marketplace, more confidence in the cross-over of sectors between the shows, and more confidence in the ability to deliver better business prospects. And, more importantly, there is more confidence among a wave of younger faces and fresh voices in the industry. But, as usual, there are also the hurdles - and in this sector, the hurdles always seem to be big. Which is why, most probably, it’ll need even bigger balls to tackle this thorny issue.

hether homegrown products or distributor products, there has never been so many innovations introduced at one time ever by Suzo-Happ before, according to the parts and peripherals specialist. Cash handling is a major focus for the industry’s largest supplier of components and spare parts. The Bill-to-Bill banknote recycler is now a Suzo-Happ product having been purchased from Crane in December 2013. With already 6,000 such units in daily use worldwide, the Bill-to-Bill banknote recyclers have long-term proven success. Suzo-Happ acts as master distributor for both Innovative Technology and MEI, and also offers Comestero’s RM5 HD coin acceptor. Suzo-Happ had its wide range of coin payout hoppers on display, including the Cube, Evolution and Flow. The Flow is also available for the new high security requirements for the Italian AWP market. In addition, the firm presented the Transact Ithaca print-

As strong as it is for cash handling solutions, SuzoHapp has the same credentials in the field of toppers. The company introduced the Celebration Event topper at ICE, which links directly into the SAS line, detecting a hand-pay signal from the slot machine and turning this into a celebration event on the topper. Also on disaplay at ICE was the new Pro brand; the own-label brand of SuzoHapp which encompasses Vision Pro - their own-brand monitors, Printer Pro - their own-brand printers and Billiard Pro - not surprisingly,
their own brand billiards. Another new Pro innovation is the Interactive Pro Table - a 42ins screen which works as multi-touchwith the screenable to split into four sections. Now developers can make new Marcel Oelen, managing director of Suzo-Happ EMEA,enthused:“There was a real buzz on the stand. We have grown our own products and team dramatically since the past year. Furthermore, our partners have been very active in creating new solutions.Never before have we had so many innovations at one time on our stand. I wish to thank the whole Suzo-Happ team for their great contribution and all our visitors.”
Leisure prepared to unveil their mobile app soundjack - little did they know that Mobile Commerce would be the buzzwords of the ICE show. “The most influential pub retailers were present at ICE, primarily thinking about gaming, but also very aware of mobile technology and what it could do to grow their business if harnessed correctly and presented to the consumer in a function-rich experience,” said Soundnet’s James Luck. He explained: “Soundjack does that - it provides unique access to a wealth of music memories - but also hones the brand experience while freeing degrees of consumer choice along the way. Our demos were met with wholesale understanding about the concept - our challenge was to inspire and some new and old contacts were really excited about the opportunity mobile could give to generate cash – and more importantly brand loyalty.”
As well as soundjack, the Sound Leisure and Soundnet stand displayed a range of both digital and classic jukeboxes. The very latest Generation 2 Vhub software was demonstrated and ‘was extremely well received’. In addition to the digital machines, Sound Leisure also had a good selection of machines on display from their Classic range, which never ceases to draw a crowd. “The quality of these works of art is what really attracts people to our machines,” commented Chris Black. “Not only do many remember the original machines but more and more people are hearing about the quality of these amazing hand-built reproductions and they want to learn more about them. We were delighted with the response to both the digital machines and the Classics and took some nice export orders whilst at the show,” concluded Black.
RGT announces stage two of machines research FOBTS
he Responsible Gambling Trust has announced further Tdetails of the next stage of the independent research it is commissioning into gambling machines with the highest stakes and prizes in Britain.Following discussions with government, the RGT has made the decision to expand its research programme and increase the available budget by 50 per cent to £750,000 to pro-
vide the focused research needed to inform policy decisions in relation to g a m bl i n g machines in licensed betting offices. The second stage of
the programme will include: • Ground breaking research into both industry data and players to explore the way that people use machines in LBOs to identify behaviour that is potentially harmful • Cognitive and physiological studies to explore the impact of higher stakes and prizes and information provision on players' behaviour in LBOs • Geographical modelling to understand how‘clustering’or the locations of LBOs and the populations they serve may influence behaviour
• Surveys of machine players to understand more about who plays machines in LBOs and to inform effective harm minimisation measures • Evaluation of the Association of British Bookmakers’ new 'code of practice' to asses impacts on behaviour Commenting, Marc Etches, CEO, said:“The Responsible Gambling Trust understands that there is growing concern about gaming machines in LBOs and that is why we are expanding our research programme to ensure that policy makers have access to the best pos-
sible research to inform decisions. “The research the RGT is commissioning is ground-breaking and will involve a number of internationally recognised experts who will seek to consider all aspects of this issue from the way people play machines to where they are located. “We believe this independent research has the potential to significantly advance our knowledge and understanding of harmful gaming machine play and help to identify the most effective means of protecting all those who choose to gamble.”

Last month’s EAG saw the culmination of many years of investment in the sector by Bandai Namco, as the latest range of machines and the Pac-Man Zone concept were unveiled to appreciative customers.

I think customers understood just how significant this brand is going to be and appreciated how much investment the company has made to ensure that we have a winning range of machines to help them remain profitable.” In addition to the range of products from Namco, the stand also played host to a number of new titles from partner manufacturers including Raw Thrills, Jennison and Apple Industries. Batman from Raw Thrills, made
its European debut at the show and is available exclusively in the region through Brent/Namco. Also from Raw Thrills was Aliens Armageddon, based on the movie franchise and Barrel of Monkeys, a video redemption title based on the classic game by Hasbro, where players must link the monkeys together. “We had some super hero licences on the stand this year with our own and our partners’ games,” concluded Brennan. “It was the perfect way to start 2014.”
Taking advantage of higher stakes STAKES AND PRIZES
hris Haley, managing director of familyC owned UK operator
Dransfields, said he remains “excited” by the opportunities surrounding the new stakes and prizes for Category B4 machines and the increase in maximum ticket price on Category B3a machines. “It’s been a long time coming - this is the first increase in the top prize on a club machine for over 20
years,” Haley said. “We’re excited by this development, which will enable manufacturers to come up with some long overdue innovations in gaming machine designs. In fact, we’re already working on some exciting developments in our own portfolio of gaming machines, and saw some really interesting new ideas at EAG International and ICE, recently.” Haley said he believes there will be a “marked
shift” towards digital gaming machines over the coming months, driven by the innovations in games designs that have taken place in licensed bookmakers over recent years. “Whilst more traditional reel-based machines will continue to be available, the new style digital gaming machines allow more flexibility,” he said.

Gauke rejects call for tourism VAT cut TAXATION
Treasury minister David Gauke has rejected a call for tourism and hospitality VAT to be cut to 5 per cent, despite cross-party support from 28 Members of Parliament. ast week saw the first ever Parliamentary debate on tourism and hospitality VAT, but despite considerable cross-party support, the motion to cut VAT on the key leisure sectors from 20 per cent to just five per cent fell on deaf ears. MP for South Downs Margaret Ritchie pointed out that the UK’s tourism industry - which provides 10 per cent of GDP and supports more than two million jobs - had been hard-hit by the higher rate of VAT. While other EU member states had introduced sector-specific cuts for the tourism industry, she said the UK hospitality industry faced “one of the worst policy regimes possible” and that the UK had been placed 138th out of 140 countries for price competitiveness for tourism by the World Economic Forum, accusing the government of “lethargy when it comes to supporting the tourism industry”. Ritchie asked the Minister to consider reducingVAT on hotel accommodation
L
and visitor attractions from 20 per cent to 5 per cent and consider broadening that out in the future to the wider hospitality sector, including to food served in pubs and restaurants. “That would encourage many more foreign visitors and provide an incentive for staycations in the domestic market. It would boost coastal resorts, rural retreats and cities and towns that have been hit hard by the economic downturn since 2008.” The proposal attracted cross-party support from MPs acknowledging the positive impact it would have on hospitality businesses in their constituencies, as well as employment and the wider economy. Green MP and co-signatory to the debate, Caroline Lucas, described the VAT cut as a“win-win-win”measure. “It is good for jobs and for the economy, because over time it is likely to raise revenue for the Exchequer, and it addresses the competitive disadvantage that the UK suffers by comparison with other parts of the
European Union.” Lucas stated that 44 per cent of those employed in hospitality are under the age of 30, and said a cut inVAT tourism would encourage the creation of employment opportunities for young people, which was “incredibly important”. Conservative MP Nick de Bois said the UK’s VAT position put the country at a competitive disadvantage for attracting business tourism and international events, stating: “Whether the industry thrives or survives is not just down toVAT, but VAT influences decisions on where to hold events.” Liberal Democrat MP Alan Reid told the House that the Isle of Man cut VAT on tourism to 5 per cent 20 years ago, and the policy had been a huge success. Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury David Gauke, however, said the government had no plans to introduce aVAT cut for the sector. He stressed that the government appreciated the value and importance of the
ge on way “We never set out for this to be a goal and it certainly didn’t factor into anything around determining the creative,” said Metro general manager corporate relations Leah Waymark. “But countless people asked,‘Where can I get the t-shirt?’We
had a lot of people who produce items approach us, from t-shirt makers to toy makers, to people who wanted to produce TV shows. But we narrowed it to what we thought would be most important, and that’s the brand integrity. This was not about finding another revenue stream. tourism sector, but claimed it was yet to find “any evidence of a causal link between VAT rates and tourism activity”. Gauke claimed Office for National Statistics data suggested that cutting VAT for food in restaurants, pubs and cafes would cost the Exchequer between
£9bn and £10bn a year, while cutting VAT to 5 per cent for accommodation would cost a further £2bn. He explained that these costs would have to be met by increasing other taxes or increasing borrowing, which is contrary to the government’s economic plan.
Shadow Exchequer Secretary Shabana Mahmood MP, meanwhile, sat on the fence, explaining that an incoming Labour government would “inherit a difficult financial situation” and would need to make sure that “the sums add up” before cutting any taxes. After the debate, Graham Wason, chairman of the Cut Tourism VAT campaign stated: “We are delighted at the all-party support shown for reduction in this first debate on Tourism VAT. It was a fantastic turnout of 28 MPs.All except the Minister responding were convinced of the need for a cut on VAT for visitor accommodation and attractions and many references were made to evidence, using a Treasury approved financial modelling system, the positive impact for the UK economy this would have.”

Hastings Pier closes in on share target REGENERATION
Seemingly doomed after it was all but destroyed by 2010’s fire, the future of Hastings Pier has been brought back from the brink by community members like Keith Sadler.
he community group spearheading the revival of Hastings Pier is stepping up efforts to raise funding ahead of the closing date for its community share scheme. Hastings Pier Charity has already secured £14m from government, lottery and council support, but still needs a further £500,000 to realise its ambitions for the structure. To date the share scheme has raised just under £250,000, with 44 days left until it closes on April 5. Keith Sadler, a business consultant who works with the charity, said he was feeling optimistic as the deadline
T
approached. He told Coinslot: “We are about to start another round of media events and press calls over the next few weeks to generate a bit more enthusiasm before the share offer closes. “I think we will generate some more momentum, as the closing date always focuses the mind, and hopefully it will encourage the people that have been thinking about it but haven’t quite got round to investing in it yet.” Work to restore the pier’s structure began last year and the first stage of the installation of facilities on its deck is due to be completed in late Spring or early summer of 2015.
This will see a café/restaurant open at its landward end and a visitor heritage centre with retail outlet and café halfway down, with the rest of the deck open for multiple use - “a park over the sea”, as Sadler described it. While the charity is hoping to attract a portfolio of activities and events for the pier to host throughout the year, including funfairs, Sadler said it had no plans for any permanent coinop amusement equipment at present. He explained: “We feel the amusement offering is catered for in Hastings by the arcades along its seafront and there isn’t necessarily a hole in the market right now.
Teignmouth holds Easter hopes despite storm damage PIERS
ofTeignmouth Pier expressed hope that it Twillhehasbeowner able to re-open in time for Easter despite suffering severe damage during the recent storms. The pier, one of the Devon coast’s most popular amusement attractions, was badly hit by rough seas, which tore a 10ft hole in its decking and tossed its coin-op equipment around the arcade like apples in a barrel. The waves also caused seri-
ous damage to the pier’s family entertainment centre building and parts of its ceiling, with the penetrating water saturating its electrical systems as well as the amusement machines. Pier owner Anthony Brenner and his family began immediate repair work after assessing the damage last Wednesday and attempting to cover the hole with hardboard and screws. However, as he told local press, the temporary measure
failed to hold in the face of such ferocious weather:“The waves just ripped right through that.” Brenner revealed that at their strongest the storm sent waves crashing over the pier’s building and skimming across the underside of its structure. Even though it is supported by Victorian era steel pillars piled 80ft into the bedrock below, he was still alarmed: “I
“Because our main source of funding is the Heritage Lottery Fund, it is not looking to bring that kind of use back to the pier. It is going to hark back to promenades as they were when piers were first constructed.” Sadler and the charity have fully embraced the digital age, using crowd-funding website Microgenius as a platform through which to sell its shares. Owned by Co-operatives UK, Microgenius was also used by FC United to raise £1.8m when launched in protest at the takeover of Manchester United in 2005. FC United’s general manager delivered what Sadler described as an “inspiring” speech at the charity’s business breakfast event in Hastings last month Sadler said the share scheme was the ideal vehicle to capture imaginations and engage the community in a local project. He added:“When something has been under private ownership for such a long time and it hasn’t been successful then why not give local residents an opportunity to get involved with its running and operation? “If people have some money in the bank that’s not earning very much, they might as well invest it in their own community.”

New guidance ensures pubs will be the real winners of Brazil 2014 PUBS
With only 19 weeks to go until the 2014 World Cup kicks off, the British Beer & Pub Association has produced definitive guidance for pubs, to help ensure that this year’s World Cup screenings are a success.
advice has been develwith the support of the TLocalheopednew Government Association and the Association of Chief Police Officers. The BBPA said that around 4m people headed to their local in 2010 to watch the first England World Cup game, clearly showing preparation for Brazil 2014 is now essential for licensees. This year’s event comes with new considerations compared to previous World Cups. The time difference will mean that fixtures will be screened later in the evening. With the majority of British football fans unable to make it to Brazil to see the matches live, pubs are likely to experience even larger crowds. To help make World Cup screenings a success, pubs will benefit from this clear and helpful guidance. Examples to consider include contacting the police and licensing officers to let them know in advance of
plans for showing World Cup events, and given the late finish of some matches during the tournament, making taxi numbers/late night public transport information readily available to assist customers in leaving the venue safely. The guidance is intended as a template for pubs, local authorities and police to work together to ensure that the World Cup is a successful and enjoyable occasion. Brigid Simmonds, BBPA chief executive, commented: “This new BBPA guidance has been designed to ensure that Brazil 2014 events can be a success. If pubs follow the guidance and work closely with their local authorities, we can ensure that as many people as possible can enjoy this exciting sporting spectacle at their local.” Councillor Tony Page, LGA Licensing Champion, said:“Councils are aware of the importance of the World Cup to residents and
are ready to help people celebrate in a safe and responsible manner. For many people, watching matches in a local pub is a fundamental part of the whole experience and councils will endeavour to support pubs, clubs and other organisations that wish to offer this facility.” He added: “Councils will always seek to say yes to well-run businesses which have proven that they can cater effectively for selling alcohol at events where emotions run high. However, they also have a responsibility to residents who may live in close proximity to popular venues and may be exposed to significant disturbance as a result. Licensees should begin discussions with councils, and their neighbours, at an early stage so that the best solutions can be found. The LGA is pleased to support the BBPA in providing this advice for licensees who wish to hold safe and successful events.”

Skill Ball Zingy SWP, Skill Ball Deluxe SWP, and more exciting innovations are in the pipeline too and we’ll be testing them soon. Comment Don’t want to talk about the weather
“
alex lee comment looked up at my office skylight this morning to see a confusing sight - some nearcloudless blue sky. After all the storms the UK has been having lately it was most welcome, especially as a sizable chunk of the coin-op industry is readying itself for Easter and the summer season - a period of time where it’s vital to enjoy at least some warm, dry weather. To this end, the issues facing the average coastal operation these days are so many and varied it’s enough to make them want to climb into a crane machine and take a long lie down on top of the generic plush. To be fair, single site operators haven’t exactly been able to chill in a business bed of roses themselves. Add the likes of test inspections, coastal regeneration (or lack thereof), car parking (see ‘coastal regeneration’), rising utility bills, competition for leisure spend and the above mentioned weather, it’s a heady concoction for any operator to handle. Now more than ever before the need to provide a value for money experience - for all the family - is paramount. If the seaside arcade doesn’t take that loose change, there’s a fair chance the pub, the cinema or more likely the big retail complex down the road will happily hoover it up. Something coin-op could never be criticised for is its
I
lack of enthusiasm for rising to a challenge. It’s a given that every operator with their finger on the pulse of their own premises will have noticed which machines took the most money, which failed ingloriously and, overall, which areas of their gaming and amusement floor need a shuffle, a polish or a further injection of new or refurbished kit. New business strategies may need to be implemented and even more attention needs giving to the needs of families, but operators are perfectly capable of that. We’ve all long realised that every single 2p has to be coaxed out of the consumer’s pocket and, wherever possible, rewarding them for their outlay. People want to win something, whether it’s a cuddly toy, a fridge magnet or an iPhone, redeemed in exchange for a few thousand tickets. While wholesale investment in new equipment is certainly not an option for everyone, particularly nowadays where bank loans are as rare as rocking horse excrement, the UK manufacturing and distribution sector is trying its hardest to make equipment purchases - as evidenced by the brisk business done at last month’s EAG International something to embrace rather than shy away from. And when better to buy a new piece of kit than when the sun is shining? Quick, before it goes in again!

alex lee media watch pending hours playing violent video games stunts Steenagers’ emotional growth,
according to a report highlighted in the Daily Mail. Researchers from Brock University in Ontario found that those who spend more than three hours each day in front of the screen are particularly unlikely to have developed the ability to empathise. The Canadians found that regular gaming and lack of exposure to the outside world makes it harder for teens to tell right from wrong. This can delay their emotional development, especially in terms of empathy, and they can also struggle to trust other people. The researchers surveyed 109 boys and girls, aged 13 and 14, about whether they played video games, which games they liked, and how long they spent playing them. Their findings found that 88 per cent of teens said they
played games, and more than half played games every day. Violent games, including games where players have to kill, maim, decapitate or torture another human character, were among the most popular. The teenagers also filled in a questionnaire designed to gauge their moral development. Previous studies have suggested that a person’s moral judgement goes through four phases as they grow from children and enter adulthood. By the age of 13 or 14, scientists claim young people should be entering the third stage, and be able to empathise with others and take their perspective into account. The research found that this stage appeared to be delayed in teenagers who regularly played violent video games. By the age of 14, scientists claim young people should be able to empathise with others. The research found that this
stage appeared to be delayed in teenagers who regularly played violent games such as Grand Theft Auto V. However, other games didn’t have an effect, suggesting that constant exposure to violence was also taking its toll on their development. The researchers concluded that rather than trying to enforce an ‘unrealistic’ ban on the games, parents and teachers should encourage teenagers to do charity work and take up extracurricular activities. Elsewhere, a former betting shop manager has spoken out in disgust at high-stakes gambling machines according to the Hemel Gazette. Sam Hollis spoke out after the government defeated a House of Commons motion by Labour to give councils the power to limit the number of FOBTs. He worked in the industry for five years from 2008, leaving in July last year.

“I like to nitpick and feel very frustrated that I am struggling to find anything to nitpick about with ICE. Adding on ‘Totally Gaming’ is in my view a totally unnecessary piece of marketing-speak, because we all know exactly what ICE is. But I really, really, couldn’t find anything to moan about.”

“The Minister for Sport, Tourism and Equalities has required full co-operation from the betting industry to understand the impact of category B2 gaming machines in high-street betting shops. The Government has made it clear that if the existing knowledge gaps in relation to these machines cannot be closed the case for precautionary measures is significantly stronger.” LORD GARDINER OF KIMBLE, CONSERVATIVE PARTY
“How often do people say ‘it is cheaper to go abroad’? That is what our resort is up against. Tourism is critical to seaside resorts in the UK, so getting this debate in Parliament is a big step forward.” IAIN HAWKINS, HEAD OF BLACKPOOL CLUSTER, MERLIN
“The story of Pickwick’s Cricket Club in Birmingham keeps on rolling. We now have in excess of 10 different operators that were ripped off by the same scam, who have got in touch. Most of them are small independent companies but a few of the larger operators have been affected too.”

it like Groundhog Day today as news breaks of FOBT addiction, teenagers’ minds being bled by video games and bingo players ripped off by excessive car parking charges.
He said: “I saw it change from an enjoyable workplace to an aggressive, immoral arena designed to trap people to the addictive content on FOBTs. Try putting a £100 bet on a dog race and you are subject to strict permission to lay rules. Put £100 in a FOBT, and you are offered a cup of tea.” He added: “There are five betting shops within five minutes of each other in Hemel town centre. They cluster like this on the High Street because they know people will walk from one to the other.” In Dacorum, there are 13 betting shops in Hemel Hempstead, two in Berkhamsted, one in Tring and one in Kings Langley. Dacorum Borough Council licensing team leader Ross Hill said: “Bookmakers are a long-standing part of the High Street, providing jobs and bringing empty units back into use. They bring extra customers into our town.”
He said the authority is actually below the national average in terms of providing licenses for gambling premises, and granted just one in the last financial year. And finally, a disgruntled bingo fan has been in touch with the Burnley Express regarding some over-the-top car park charges. Local resident Michele Binks wrote: “Following a night out at Gala Bingo in Burnley on January 13, when I parked on the car park (where TK Maxx is) as theirs was full at 7.24pm, I received a parking charge for £60. “Having spoken to UKPC, it would also appear I incurred another ticket the week after on January 21, which I have not yet received. £120 in total is a disgraceful amount of money to expect anyone to pay for this type of supposed offence and I’m not a pensioner living on the breadline. “I immediately rang Gala
Bingo and was told there had been a change of ownership of the car park last year and customers were discouraged from using this facility as the new owners were being very awkward.” She concluded: “A great deal of their customers had received more than one of these notices, some several in one week. The operation seems to be immoral. This is obviously having an impact on their business and its customers. Would the local MP wish to be involved in this as it is his community that is suffering?”
Government must act early to support flood-hit businesses The BHA is urging the government to act early in support of hospitality businesses such as bars, pubs, B&Bs and tourist attractions across the UK as they struggle to cope with, and then recover from, the effects of flooding and the winter storms which are now in their third month.
ufi ibrahim british hospitality association ith warnings from the Met Office and Environment W Agency that the adverse weather is set to continue, causing severe flooding to more homes and businesses across the UK, as well as playing havoc with the transport network, the BHA is highly concerned at the potential future impact on hospitality and tourism businesses. We are urging the government to act early to support the industry in two ways: by creating a tourism marketing budget to attract people back to flood hit areas and to give business in affected areas a moratorium on VAT, PAYE and corporation tax payments to help their cash flows. Hospitality businesses in the west, south and south west are worst affected, with many still trying to recover from loss of business over the busy Christmas period. The impact of these storms is potentially catastrophic for hospitality and tourism businesses in the affected areas. The ripple effect is also hitting other businesses as tourists are being put off visiting parts of the UK because of the severe weather. We have to act now to plan for the future and we are keen to ensure that our industry has learned the lessons from the past and is helped by the government to quickly set a path to recovery. The BHA is asking government urgently to help our industry in two ways: by setting up a marketing budget to attract tourists back, and by giving affected businesses a lifeline by offering a moratorium on VAT, PAYE and corporation tax payments. Meanwhile,May 7 2015 may seem a long way off but the reality is this; in campaigning and lobbying terms, the countdown has begun towards the next general election.By the time of our Hospitality &Tourism Summit
in June 2014, each of the key political parties will be making the finishing touches to their manifesto. Hospitality and tourism was not featured in any of the manifestos at the last general election. Now, though,we have a shot at inclusion. Thanks to key BHA-led initiatives like the Big Hospitality Conversation - an initiative which demonstrates our industry’s passion and commitment for helping to tackle youth unemployment across every region of the UK and firmly setting our industry on the UK plc’s agenda for growth - our political capital has never been higher. Our mission is to ensure that the UK hospitality and tourism industry receives recognition as best in the world. To help us achieve this it is vital that we continue to focus on recruiting and growing the best talent, capitalising and building on the successes of the Big Hospitality Conversation. Over the past three years our industry profile has grown thanks to the efforts of the industry. 2014, too,has got off to a fast pace.Despite all this, the hospitality and tourism industry now have just four short months to make a significant impact. First and foremost we need to work as one; pooling our expertise, resources and ideas to future-proof our industry. Embracing and capitalising on innovation and technology will support this mission and the young people who form the backbone of our industry will be key to this process. Over the coming months our mission will and must be to make our goals a reality. We have a unique and unprecedented opportunity to make our voice heard. We must take action now.
