he Gaming Machine Technical Standards, published on the Gambling Commission website, incorporate all the revisions made to gaming machine technical standards from September 2007 onward. These standards are the Gambling Commission’s up to date requirements with respect to game features, display

notices and general machine operation, including metering. A Commission spokesperson stated: “Operators or end users should not rely upon these standards as a measure of reliability, quality or minimal security standards.” These standards permit equivalence between different types of technology and do not specify

proprietary products or technologies. Testing regimes for these standards will permit equivalent international standards (ISO). The Commission concluded: “The technical standards are not intended to limit game content or the use of new technological development provided that the objectives of the standards are met.”

Funding row erupts over Skegness tourist attraction plan SEASIDE RESORTS

Major UK seaside resort Skegness is missing out when it comes to funding to support tourism projects, according to a local councillor. ouncillor Mark Anderson said Lincolnshire County Council C needed to invest more along the coast. Skegness attracts more than four million visitors each year, generating £480m for the local economy, yet calls to help the town to become a yearround resort have fallen on deaf ears. Anderson’s comments came after funding for a £1.2m attraction in Skegness was turned down by the European Regional Development Fund. The county

council said it was up to private business to lead investment. The bid was for funding to create a covered walkway between Skegness Pier and Botton’s Pleasure Beach, with stages at either end. Anderson, a Labour member of East Lindsey District Council and Skegness Town Council, said although the bid made it to the final stages, the contribution needed from local businesses was too much in the short term. He believes the county coun-

Commission issues transparency reminder TECHNICAL STANDARDS

The Gambling Commission has issued a game transparency reminder for operators of coin-op machines which offer casino gaming content. ith the current trend for emulating casino-style games firmly in mind, the Gambling Commission has despatched a reminder to licensed operators that gaming machines offering games presented as recognised games of chance, such as roulette or blackjack, must be transparent in informing players where those games differ from their ‘real’ equivalents. This follows a recent case in which a category B3 game which was presented and described as a random roulette game when that was not the case. The game was found to be operating under game rules that were different to the equivalent real game of roulette. This was not made clear to players. The Commission considered this to be a potential breach of the gaming machine technical standards and contrary to ensuring gambling is conducted in a fair and open way. Following intervention by the Commission, the licensed operator concerned, to his credit, quickly made amendments to the game. The Commission’s national compliance manager for gaming machines, Stuart McPhee said:“If a game plays differently on a machine when compared to the recognised real game it is designed to look like, then any game rules must make that clear.” He added:“Manufacturers, suppliers and retailers should assure themselves that the rules of any casino variant style games are transparent, to ensure customers understand them. Failure to do so

W

cil, which is run by a coalition of Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and Independents, should now step in and help fund the scheme.Anderson said:“We are not getting our fair share - the county council only invested £300,000 last year.To put that in perspective, East Lindsey (the local authority) invested about £500,000. We have got some of the most severely deprived wards in the UK along the coast and our young people are crying out for jobs and training.” “We cannot be a 12-week economy any more,” he added. Conservative county councillor Colin Davie said Mr Anderson’s comments were ‘hugely

unfair’. He responded: “We are investing massively in the coastline, which is not just Skegness.” Regarding the covered walkway, he said:“I don’t think it is a dead project - I think it can come back but it is going to need to see a greater level of contribution from the private sector. I expect all businesses to start putting some of the profits they make every year back into their businesses so the tourism industry can grow. “Quite honestly, the county council does not own Skegness and it does not own the foreshore - most of it is owned by the town and district councils and businesses.”

could lead to formal regulatory action for breaching the Gambling Commission’s technical standards.” The Commission’s Gaming machine technical standards require that “if a gaming machine offers a game that is recognisable (for example poker, blackjack and roulette) and is described as such by title or visual presentation and the chances of winning differ from an equivalent real game, this must be made plain to the player either via the artwork or help menus. In any event the rules of the simulated game must be clear and transparent to the player”.

Additionally, if a game is misrepresented, or its rules or functioning are not transparent to the player, the Commission considers this to be a breach of the second licensing objective -‘ensuring that gambling is conducted in a fair and open way’. With coin-op game developers constantly looking at ways to hang on to the coat-tails of the B2 (fixed odds betting terminal) sector, whose success has been helped by being able to offer the likes of blackjack and roulette, the message coming from the Gambling Commission is very much ‘proceed with extreme caution’.

Felixstowe arcade owner looks to expand

Report exposes poverty in coin-op strongholds

harlie Manning, owner of Manning’s Amusements in C Felixstowe, has submitted

SOCIAL STUDY

Better housing and transport links are vital if seaside towns like Rhyl, Margate, Clacton-on-Sea, Great Yarmouth and Blackpool are to overcome deep-rooted levels of poverty, according to a new report. study by the Centre for Social Justice, entitled Turning The Tide, has singled out a number of traditional seaside resorts as facing levels of poverty similar to some of the country’s most deprived inner city areas. The report examined five coastal towns - Rhyl in North Wales, Margate, Clacton-on-Sea, Great Yarmouth and Blackpool. It found that on key measures of poverty school failure, teenage pregnancy, fatherlessness and lone parenting, and worklessness - they have problems as severe as deprived inner-city areas. Christian Guy, the CSJ’s director, said: “Some of these areas have been left behind. We must ramp up efforts to revive Britain’s coastal towns, not just for visitors but for the people who live there.” In one part of Rhyl, twothirds of working-age people were dependent on out-of-work benefits.

A

Meanwhile, 41 per cent of adults in Clacton-on-Sea had no qualifications almost double the average for England and Wales. Blackpool local authority had the highest rate of children in care in the whole of England - 150 per 10,000 population - far exceeding the English average of 59, it said. The CSJ said much of the accommodation in the five towns had been acquired by private landlords and converted into ‘extremely cheap’ housing, attracting people living on low incomes and welfare claimants, as well as less economicallyactive people such as single-parent families and pensioners. In Blackpool, the local council believe an abundance of cheap accommodation is a magnet, as old faded guest houses are turned into bedsits. They are trying to contain the situation by forcing landlords to get licences. But councils in London and

the Midlands have approached Blackpool landlords looking to find cheap accommodation for some of their residents - a poor town, attracting poor people. It also found councils in high-cost areas were taking advantage of cheap accommodation in seaside towns by using them to house vulnerable people. As a result, coastal towns were becoming “veritable dumping grounds for groups such as care leavers, people with substance abuse problems, those with mental health issues and ex-offenders”, it said. CSJ director Christian Guy said living standards in some of the UK’s bestknown coastal towns had declined ‘beyond recognition’ and locals were‘bearing the brunt of severe levels of social breakdown’. “We have found inspiring local people, services and charities working

hard to turn things around, but they are struggling to do this alone. Some of these areas have been left behind. We must ramp up efforts to revive Britain’s coastal towns, not just for visitors but for the people who live there,” he said. The report said of Margate: “The road to Margate’s regeneration is long and there is no quick fix for the malaise of social and economic issues plaguing the area.” On the plus side, however, it recognised the work being done by organisations like the Margate Task Force - which brings together 14 differ-

ent agencies to tackle housing and regeneration - and praised the impact of the Turner Centre. The CSJ’s report added: “The road to Margate’s regeneration is long and there is no quick fix for the malaise of social and economic issues plaguing the area.” Cllr Iris Johnston, Thanet council’s cabinet member for community services, said a lot was already being done, concluded on a positive note. She stated:“We are getting there... the issues are changing day by day. There are good bits and bad bits but there is more optimism now.”

proposals to the borough council for a licensed bowling and amusements venue in Ipswich, which has been earmarked for a former factory on the town’s Star Lane. If the project is given the green light, it would include five bowling lanes, gaming machines, a bar and an American-style burger diner. Manning said:“It is going to be just off the waterfront so it is a good link between the waterfront and the town centre. With UCS and student accommodation just opposite us as well, it is going to be a great spot for students.A lot of the feedback we have had is from people saying Ipswich needs something new and different. We will serve alcohol and food but it will be good quality and the ten pin bowling and entertainment will make a well-rounded evening.” A decision is not due to be reached on the proposals until the end of September but Manning is confident they will go through. As well as offering people a place to enjoy games and food, there will also be rooms where people will be able to hold different functions, with live entertainment also planned. Manning added:“The first floor is the private rooms for functions and the ground floor is the main use of restaurant and bowling. It won’t be fine dining but it will be good quality and with a couple of fun challenges as well.” It is thought the building will take about three months to refurbish and it is hoped it will be open by the end of October.

CASUAL GAMING

he website Research and Markets has announced the addition of the Video TGaming Market Report 2013 report to its offering and casual gaming, which has inspired the likes of recent coin-op redemption pieces Doodle Jump and Temple Run, has seen a huge upsurge. A major growth segment in the video gaming industry in recent years has been casual gaming. These relatively simple and cost-effective games are mainly aimed at mobile devices, and have been driven by the proliferation of smartphone ownership in the UK, and via the significant growth in the tablet computing sector. Such games, while cheap to play, are able to be sold to the mass market and have proven extremely popular among demographics not traditionally associated with the video gaming market. Over the next five years, the home video gaming industry is expected to experience a period of strong and prolonged growth. As software releases accelerate, and demand for the new consoles rise, growth in the market is expected to become increasingly significant from 2014. However, as the console market reaches saturation, growth could be become increasingly subdued by 2016 or 2017. In 2012, the authors estimate that the value of the UK home video gaming industry exhibited a decline of 6.3 per cent in

comparison with the previous year. This fall is attributable to the maturity of the current generation of home video gaming consoles, released in 2005 and 2006. However,in 2012,Nintendo was the first of the major console manufacturers to release a new, eighth generation console, with the launch of the Wii U. Despite this, with no new gaming platforms from Sony or Xbox, the market for gaming hardware, software and accessories remained depressed. In 2013, however, Sony and Xbox announced plans to release their entries into the eighth generation of console gaming, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, both of which are expected to be launched in the final quarter of 2012.This, alongside full-year sales and an increasing number of software releases for the Wii U, is expected to boost demand in the market in 2013 and beyond.

Both of these trends continued in the past year, with food sales up a percentage point to around 25 per cent of average total pub sales, and wet sales down four percentage points to around 68 per cent of average total pub sales. For the first time, food sales have come to represent “well in excess of half of total

this information, Featurespace is able to build up a picture of what is normal for any given individual, and what would constitute erratic or uncharacteristically risky behaviour.

Record-breaking year for RGT SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

It says much about an industry that no matter how deep the recession strikes, it continues to pay its dues on social responsibilty - and how. The RGT has this week confirmed that the gambling industry donated 10 per cent more to its activities than the previous year.

he Responsible Gambling Trust’s Neil TGoulden has reported 2012/13 to be a recordbreaker for the charity. He stated:“I am delighted to report that 2012/13 proved to be a recordbreaking fundraising year for the Responsible Gambling Trust with the gambling industry donating £5.7m last year - 10 per cent more than in 2011/12.” The charity has also continued to reduce its overhead and fundraising costs, which now represent 9.6p for every £1 raised. As a charity wholly and voluntarily funded from

the gambling industry, the Responsible Gambling Trust remains particularly conscious of the need to maintain its independence and integrity. As such, it has in place robust governance arrangements to oversee all its work including the establishment of a research committee chaired by Liz Barclay, the charity’s senior independent trustee. The Responsible Gambling Trust has also appointed Bell Pottinger (David Hill and Stephen Lotinga) as communications advisers to help build and secure the organisation’s reputation. The Responsible Gam-

COMMENTARY So, 10 per cent more donated to the RGT than last year and that’s in the midst of a relentless recession and a legislative backdrop that just makes a sensible, sane person despair. It’s this kind of data that will undoubtedly slip under the anti-gambling lobby radar - much to their shame. And that’s because, gambling remains a massively over-regulated industry, and an unfairly, inconsistently regulated one at that. Yet, these donations from the industry continue to roll in; at what price, well, everyone outside of the industry isn’t really interested as long as that particular tap stays on. But the question will always remain - at what stage can the industry continue to give without receiving? Until this very real crisis of consistency - or lack of starts to seep into the regulatory consciousness, all we can do is take solace - and pride - on a somewhat remarkable achievement for a much maligned sector of the business world. Gambling, whether you like the fact or not, is paying its way. Maybe it’s time that some people start to respect that?

bling Trust recently published its 2013/14 commissioning plan, setting out how donations will be spent on research, education/harm prevention and treatment services. This year, the proposed distribution of funds is planned to be 16 per cent more than in 2012/13. Goulden concluded: “On behalf of my fellow trustees, the staff at the Responsible Gambling Trust and our beneficiaries, I thank you for your support and very much hope that you will help us achieve our 2013/14 fundraising target of £6m.”

Tesco No campaign to meet MP

Clacton Pier celebrates with a bang

Broadband boost for Fantasy Island

Cleethorpes Pier reopened in a week

Campaigners against a proposed Tesco Express store on the site of Westward Ho!’s Sunshine Leisure amusement arcade will meet with local MP Geoffrey Cox next week. The meeting takes place at 7.30pm on August 14 at the resort’s Village Inn.

Clacton Pier has marked its 142nd anniversary and the start of the summer holidays with a spectacular fireworks display. Pier owner Billy Ball said he hoped to make the show, which also featured a choir, DJ and dance displays, an annual event.

Ingoldmells’ Fantasy Island amusement park has unveiled its latest high speed attraction: wireless broadband. Operations manager James Parker said: “We will be rolling out exciting new social media platforms over the next few years that would not have been possible without this.”

Cleethorpes Pier’s new leaseholder Bryan Huxford has celebrated reopening the iconic landmark just a week after collecting the keys. He commented: “I can’t believe we have got it open already but I feel very, very optimistic about the future.”

Council parking profit millions revealed PARKING CHARGES

New figures show that councils are making millions of pounds in profit from parking charges - the bane of many seaside operators’ lives. nglish councils whose boundaries include seaside resorts have been found to be amongst those making the highest profit from parking charges. According to a report by the RAC Foundation, England’s 359 councils had a total current account surplus of £565m from on and off-street parking schemes in 2011-12, a rise of 10 per cent on the previous year. Although eight of the councils with the 10 biggest cash surpluses were Londonbased, Brighton and Hove was sixth, while Cornwall was eighth. The figures were made public just days after a judge declared that Barnet Council in north London had acted

E

illegally in setting parking charges to raise revenue. Professor Stephen Glaister, director of the RAC Foundation, said:“For many local authorities, parking charges are a nice little earner. Not all authorities make big sums. Several run a current account deficit and indeed of those with surpluses many will see the money vanish when capital expenditure is taken into account. “But the bottom line is that hundreds of millions of pounds are being contributed annually to council coffers through parking charges and the drivers who are paying them have a reasonable expectation to see the cash spent on improving the roads. In fact it is enshrined in law - as under-

lined by the Barnet case last week - that profits gained from on street charges and penalties must be ploughed back into a very limited number of things including maintaining the roads.” In recent years, parking charges have become the bane of many an amusement arcade operator, as increases have discouraged visitors from parking in pricier seafront areas or caused them to spend less time parked at a resort in order to avoid paying more.

Brighton and Hove boosted its parking profits from £12.8m in 2010-11 to £14.4m in 2011-12, while Cornwall’s actually fell slightly, from £8.2m to £7.9m. Blackpool, the 36th highest parking charges earner, saw its surplus rise from 3m in 2010-11 to £3.6m in 201112, while Bournemouth, in 39th,dropped from £3.8m to £3.4m. The news also came just a day after the government claimed that councils will increase the amount of

Ministers said that income from “parking services” is forecast to rise by 5.6 per cent from £601m to £634.5m in 2013-14. Local government secretary Eric Pickles accused councils of using motorists as a “cash cow” for income lost in other areas and said the figures showed that parking charges needed to be “reined in”. He commented: “This

East Devon District Council said that part of the sale price would be spent on the Queens Drive ‘Splash’ project, which will include an amusement arcade, as well as a play and recreation area, a water sports hub and retail areas. At a meeting of its cabinet,

the council said an outline planning application for the project would be submitted within “the

Andrew Moulding, chairman of the Exmouth Regeneration Programme Board, said: “The people of Exmouth would not think it right if we did not invest the receipt from Elizabeth Hall into other projects in Exmouth.” The council’s deputy chief executive, Richard Cohen, said that contracts for the transfer

of the Elizabeth Hall site would be completed by next week, with building work beginning ‘soon.’ However, he admitted that there would still be a cash shortfall for the Queen’s Drive ‘Splash’ project and said the council will need to seek funding from other sources, including the European Union.

After sales & service REGIONAL OPERATORS

‘You’re only as good as your last service call’ Service is, perhaps, the most important aspect of any gaming operation, according to Jason Jarrett, director of Automatic Machine Services in the South East. Automatic Machine Services (AMS) has had a good first six months of the year. We have picked up a lot of new business, and various products are performing very well for us. We are constantly reviewing our products to ensure we are maximising income across all our sites. We have picked up a lot of new business through doing the right things the right way, and on good terms. In July and August so far, we have noticed a slight dip in takings, but this tends to happen at this time of the year. We have noted an uplift in a small number of Paragon machines in specific sites, due to the Category C option being integrated, while AWPs are continually performing particularly well. In my opinion, after-sales and servicing is paramount. My Granddad started our business, and his philosophy was: ‘You’re only as good as your last service call’. If you are late, or you don’t turn up or you can’t fix the machine then this is what the customer will remember. Service is probably the most important aspect of the business. You can supply the best machine in the world that’s number-one in the charts and is supposed to take the most money every week, but if it’s out of order it’s going to be the worst machine in the world. As such, our servicing tasks are reviewed daily. We have a team of service technicians who are on the road seven days a week. Service calls are all monitored as they come in from the customers, logged onto the system and numbered so that nothing is missed whatsoever. Our ruling on it is that anything which is logged before 9 o’clock at night is attended to that evening, and within two hours. So, if someone puts a call in at quarter to nine they will have someone there that night - and 95 per cent of the time an engineer will be there within the hour. We also stock a range of accessories and components. For example, with regard to pool tables we have a dedicated technician who visits every site every six weeks, and the table will be brushed and remarked. He will check the cue tips, clean the lights, ensure the table is level and check the chalk stocks. Of course, it doesn’t take long for a well-used pool table to start looking a bit tired, and this will affect

the income. This service is free of charge to our customers. More generally, all our service technicians have a full range of spares in their

vehicles, so that if they get a problem they have the parts they need to be able to fix it straight away and not have to head back to the depot. We ensure all of our engineers are kept up to speed in terms of new technologies and new products. For example, we recently conducted a training exercise with Sound Leisure for jukeboxes. We try and get as much information on any new product or new technology as we take delivery and conduct training sessions with our technicians. It’s important for everybody to know how all the machines work and learn all the little tricks of the trade that help you overcome problems. This is obviously an ongoing process, but communication is key - and manufacturers are always there to pass on information.”

Essential Guide to ... After sales & service Sector Overview SWOT ANALYSIS

After-sales - the ‘solutions not problems’ sector The quality of service, particularly what is provided beyond a machine’s initial deployment in the arcade, bingo hall, pub or club, can be a vital factor underpinning an operator’s future purchasing decisions. In the uber-competitive arena of amusements and gaming, where products are many, but profit margins are slim, a professional after-sales service can make all the difference. t’s impossible to deny that the industry has contracted over the last decade or two, therefore as demand for new products has slowed and product margins have fallen, after-sales service which ultimately safeguards returns on investment - has become less of an afterthought and more an integral part of any supplier or distributor’s armoury. As a natural by-product, spares and components

providers have become more organised, professional and altogether quicker to react to the market’s needs. Even if a company’s main business is in the production or distribution of amusement, gaming, video and novelty machines, the provision of after-sales service has now become an integral consideration of any firm with something to sell. quality of customer service is the key to achieving a competitive advantage. In other words, a good product remains necessary in the first instance, but it is no longer sufficient to compete in today’s UK coinop trading environment. Equally, shoddy after sales service can have an adverse affect on a company’s fortunes. If service requirements such as replacement parts or technical updates aren’t provided efficiently - and in double quick time - the obvious conclusion is customer frustration and loss of further sales. Making extra money from after-sales is desirable, but in many cases providing an efficient and reliable after-sales service can be used as a highly competitive tool for promoting the products in question and creating a better image for the company that manufactured or distributed it. It has long become clear that after sales adds value to the product that was originally bought. A solid after-sales service allows operators to gain maximum value from their purchase and, ideally, lets them ensure that it is available to their customers for many years of trouble-free use. Furthermore, it is no longer enough to provide operators with ‘just’well-designed and professionally manufactured machines, but also to give them the peace of mind that a thorough aftersales service provides.After-sales has therefore evolved into an integral part of any distributor’s armoury. An operator’s satisfaction is therefore not only decided by the ROI and overall performance of the equipment purchased, but by the total value received and by the quality of the interaction and relationship experience throughout the product’s lifespan. In a sector that has shrunk as dramatically as UK coin-op,after-sales have become more important than ever before. It is no coincidence that an unhappy customer, dissatisfied with the level, speed and efficiency of a distributor’s after-sales support will soon look elsewhere when it comes to updating his machine stock. Customer loyalty, therefore, is ultimately ‘bought’ by a consistent level of after-sales service from the first moment something goes awry - a fact that is certainly not lost on today’s providers.

SWOT ANALYSIS AFTER-SALES STRENGTHS • Important additional revenue source • Customer satisfaction breeds long-term distributor/operator relationships • Operators can no longer afford to buy from a company that doesn’t have an established and competent after-sales service WEAKNESSES • An element of machine downtime is, unfortunately, inevitable • Too much emphasis and investment on after-sales can eat into overall profits OPPORTUNITIES • Greater customer retention, therefore freezing out competitors • Operators will buy more often and/or in greater quantities if they’ve benefited from a good after-sales service • Advantage can be gained over competition as many products are similar THREATS • New legislation can render machines onsite obsolete or less profitable • Parts are harder to source for older machines or those manufactured abroad

Essential Guide to ... After sales & service Market Perspectives SERVICE NETWORKS Customers across the UK have found they can make significant cost savings using van run and advance replacement services such as those offered by E-Service. Paul Smith, sales director for the company, explains.

Saving the customer time and money With today’s challenging economic times, the successful operator continually adapts their service to attract new customers and sell more to those they already have. Fundamental to this is making sure machines are well presented and kept in good working order. Therefore, it is imperative that any faulty machines are up and running as soon as possible. This is where a good service provider, offering excellent advance replacement service and a wide range of post maintenance spares, comes to the forefront. The E-Service van run operates throughout the UK, from South Wales to central Scotland. Our six professional, reliable and efficient drivers travel in excess of half a million miles per year, collecting and delivering repairs and spares to designated customers every week. There is no minimum order value and the driver is fully equipped with relevant paperwork and packaging. Importantly, no matter how well the operator plans ahead, there will always be times when a machine breaks down, potentially resulting in a significant loss in takings. To get the machine back up and running urgently, you simply order an advance replacement part and we will deliver it the next day. The van driver will then collect your faulty return. The main benefit is that both lost revenue and the operator’s stock levels are kept to a minimum, giving maximum returns with minimal investment - a win/win solution. The main benefit of the van run is simple: it saves the customer time and money. There are no carriage charges, no invoice queries, no packaging costs and no time stuffing boxes. Customers all over the UK have found they can make significant cost savings using our services and appreciate the fact there is no minimum collection or order value. Tristan Wormell, our operations manager, heads up the workshop, working closely with the department supervisors, ensuring that regular communication is kept between E-Service and the suppliers, so that any updated firmware, currency changes and fraud issues are brought to the forefront as soon as possible. All repairs come complete with latest firmware installed and a three-month warranty, giving our customers the peace of mind they require. As a team we believe that communication is imperative both internally and to our customers. Communication, whether by telephone, email or face-to-face, is key to offering the best service possible. In addition, E-Service encourages customers to contact us for technical support, so that information can be shared, assisting all within the industry.

able, capable and helpful team of sales and technical staff here in the UK, as we do in all of our offices across the world. We are available to our customers by phone, in person, by email or through our website and can often be contacted outside of normal working hours, if necessary. We have two external sales managers who are both office and field based, along with a team of internal sales representatives and a newly formed customer service department in addition to our workshop and technical support staff. All of the above allows us to deal with our customers more quickly and efficiently. We provide two van run collection and delivery services per week for spares and repairs, and for those customers we cannot reach personally we offer free collection and free delivery of repaired items, which has proved to be extremely popular with our customers as this provides them with a simple, cost-effective, quality repair service. Being part of a global organisation is great for us, and of course great for our customers, particularly as there are many video and amusement games which are brought into the UK from the US and China. Our OEM business in both the amusement and gaming sectors across the world gives us access to technical knowledge and, of course, parts we will have supplied to the original equipment manufacturers - the end result being a broad range of products and knowledge for our customers. We talk to our customers on a regular basis to see how their businesses are changing and what issues they are currently facing. We are very proactive when it comes to creating solutions to some of our customers’ issues. Most recent examples of this is the creation of an LCD retro-fit kit for Golden Tee Golf and also Portrait Studio where the original CRT monitors are no longer available, but the products are still relatively popular and operators can justify spending a bit of money on them to keep them going. At Suzo-Happ, we try to keep ahead of the pace when it comes to gaining technical and spare parts knowledge for the latest equipment in the market. We have excellent relationships with all of the manufacturers and brands that we represent. This helps to keep us up to speed with what’s going on in the industry, and our global presence in both the amusement and gaming sectors means that there is a great wealth of knowledge and expertise within easy reach for our customers and us.”

after-sales ‘Holy Trinity’ these days with operators demanding that their machines are kept running to their full potential. Alex Lee explains. roviding a reliable, practical and effective after-sales service should, one would assume, come as second nature to the UK gaming and amusement industry. After all, this is a service-led business which demands that the products supplied function to their optimum levels in often challenging conditions. Furthermore, they’re operated at times when servicing and back-up can be difficult to maintain. Add to this the ongoing issue of machines staying out on site for much longer these days, and it becomes obvious that whether you’re in the business of supplying or operating, any machine downtime that you’re responsible for has to be kept to an absolute minimum. “Speed is the essence” is the oftrepeated mantra of anyone directly involved in the provision of after-sales services, from both an operational and supply perspective. After all, a machine that doesn’t work - for whatever reason is no use to anyone.Speedy response time, therefore, is uppermost in the list of any operator’s selection criteria, from the point of purchase onwards. Of course, however, there’s a lot more to an efficient after-sales service than driving a van quickly and having the biggest toolbox.Another crucial factor that regularly crops up is the need for customers to be able to speak with the industry’s technical experts who can swiftly get to the heart of a problem before it becomes a major issue. While the coin-op industry has developed more in recent years than it is sometimes credited for, operators with malfunctioning machines don’t have to deal with international call centres whose employees don’t know the difference between Bolton and Poulton. Comprehensive product knowledge, immaculate attention to detail and the ability to transfer this to the customer efficiently is at the end of a UK phone line. While today’s coin-op machines are as sophisticated as you like, fixing them isn’t rocket science, but it does require specialist knowledge, qualified engineers and the right parts. And that, quite clearly, is something the UK gaming and amusement sector has in abundance.

SUZO-HAPP GROUP

E-Service: ‘Costeffective services maximise operator returns’

Suzo-Happ: on the Fast Track to spares and repairs

Now in its 10th year of trading, E-Service continues to hone its presence in the UK’s service and support sector.

In an effort to better serve its many operators across the UK, Suzo-Happ has continued to develop its repair service.

-Service was established in January 2004, as a service, spares and support company for the gaming and amusement industry. Now,in its 10th year of trading, the company has seen many changes within the industry, whilst progressing gradually as a company. Nick Holmes, sales manager, who was the sixth ever employee, said:“When I first began, E-Service offered repairs on a range of components. Slowly we expanded our repair offerings, increased our van run service and generated our advance replacement facility, before moving into field service, general spares and more recently pool equipment and cloth.” E-Service has focused its energies on offering a great service at competitive prices. Listening to their customers’ needs and creating cost-effective solutions has been paramount to the company’s growth. “We are all aware of the difficult economic climate,” Holmes added. “This, along with the smoking ban and law changes, most certainly makes for challenging times. However, we believe that with the variety of services we offer, at least one will benefit the customer and save them money.” With E-Service’s Advance Replacement Service, 98 per cent of orders are shipped the same day, keeping operators’ machine estates up and running and thereby optimising returns. The company’s Field Service team of engineers has over 50 years of industry experience. he Suzo-Happ Group continues to grow its service and support business for the UK operators. February 2011 saw the launch of the Fast Track Repair (FTR) service, which started out primarily with the repair and return of CRT and LCD monitors at the company’s facility in Chessington, Surrey. Sales director John Vallis said: “We have continued to evolve and develop our UK repair service over the past couple of years, from the monitor repairs in 2011 right through to today where we now offer two weekly van run Services - one on the M4 Corridor from London to Swansea and one across the Midlands. “We spoke to a large number of single site and arcade operators to find out what we could do to help support these customers to provide more support. It was clear that there was a huge desire for customers not only to have access to over 20,000 spares and accessories but to also be able to get items repaired by the same company, this saves them time, money and the need to hold large stocks of parts themselves.” Vallis added: “Things have really gained momentum for us in the UK. We now offer free collection and return shipping by UPS couriers for goods to be repaired, and we have increased the amounts and types of products we can repair. These include coin acceptors, note validators, power supplies and game boards, to name but a few.” To further enhance its commitment to quality and service, Suzo recently created a dedicated customer service department to provide help and support to our customers, giving them a single point of contact for all aspects of repairs, deliveries and product support, further enhancing the customer experience. “Fast Track Repair really complements our core business of manufacturing and distributing spares, accessories and custom solutions for the amusement and gaming markets, which really enables us to provide as much of a one-stop shop service as possible. We offer a high quality, cost effective repair service to all of our customers, regardless of size or location.”

Ripon-based distributor AMG Leisure recently embarked upon a tour of the LAI Games factory in Jakarta. MG Leisure exclusively distributes LAI’s amusement and novelty products in the UK, so it was only natural that co-directors Mark Sowray and Alex Auckland visited the LAI factory premises in Jakarta, where several of its product lines originate, last month. This marked AMG’s first visit to the LAI factory, and the AMG Leisure delegation was treated to a preview of the new games in development and scheduled to be introduced at IAAPA Attractions Expo in November. Also on the itinerary was a first-hand look at the work that goes into game development and production. The LAI factory increased its output capacity a little more than a year ago. “We’re really impressed by the scale and quality of LAI’s manufacturing facility,” said Sowray. “It is a huge operation; great care is taken at every step in the process, and it was very interesting to see just how much work the factory does in-house.” “It was fascinating seeing the whole new game process through R&D, meet-

A

ing the development team and being given a sneak-peek at the new games for IAAPA,” added Auckland. The visit gave two of AMG’s founders the opportunity to run the rule over their next shipment of Balloon Busters in LAI’s production area. The popular prize merchandiser is currently one of AMG’s biggest-selling games. Auckland and Sowray also visited a local Timezone location to view one of LAI’s prototype games on test. Timezone is a chain of over 200 family entertainment centres owned by the LAI Group, the parent company of LAI Games, and often serves as a testing ground for new LAI titles. Erstwhile AMG employee and now LAI’s international sales manager, Steve Bryant, concluded: “It was fantastic to have a distributor of AMG’s calibre take the time to visit our factory. It adds value to our relationship when they can see how our games are produced, and provides a great opportunity to get their invaluable feedback and ideas for improvements.”

Comment Impressed? Yes, I admit it, I was

“Yes please!”

alex lee comment o kill some time the other day I called into a nearby large arcade/FEC/bowling complex which happens to be situated in on the lower floor of one of the UK’s biggest indoor shopping malls. Those of you who know my approximate location will immediately realise precisely which establishment I’m talking about. I was with my son and stepson, both of whom have been to the above mentioned before, yet I could tell immediately how impressed they were by the place. There were a number of reasons for this. From my point of view, I thought the fact that a game of live football was being broadcast in joined-up screens along the length of the bowling alley area was a visual treat and a fantastic idea to encourage ‘just one more game’ of tenpin bowling - and further food and drink purchases. I was also heartened to see that there was a fabulous mix of people in there, from groups of teenagers to fullon extended families. My son and stepson immediately ‘bought into’ the fact that a large percentage of the games in there were redemption-enabled and, already familiar with the concept of the ticket eater and the redemption

T

counter, wanted to work out which machines were most likely to pump out tickets. While we moved from machine to machine in our hunt for more tickets, the focal point of the FEC, the central dodgems area, was being used by some enthusiastic kids whose wails of excitement reflected the overall happy mood of the place. The venue in question does have one serious advantage over many - its position in a massively highfootfall area. Other than that, it faces the same issue as all other similar operations - which machines to position where in order to maximise the ROI. Little touches such as the live football (which I know must cost an awful lot of money) and the fact that there’s an adjacent bar of course elevate it above ‘standard’FECs,but this was a glowing example of what can be achieved in difficult, challenging times for all. Could we all learn something from a quick visit to such an impressive location? As I left the happy hordes, I couldn’t help think that if the coin-op sector is in a state of decline (as people like to tell us), the entertainment centres that have got it right, such as this one, are doing a superb job.

alex lee media watch perators need to be in tune with what’s cool, according O to a recent article on the Intergame website. Taking an overview of the pay-to-play amusements sector, whether that’s pure family amusements or street gaming, there are clear trends emerging across the sector - online connectivity, video touchscreens, appinspired content, automated management systems… Slowly but surely, these new ideas are taking hold and are changing the way games are made available and the way operators manage them. As has been discussed in the pages of Intergame many times in the past, often central to the appeal of pay-to-play amusements is their simplicity. What works for one generation of players seems to work equally well - and as intuitively - for the next. Given the breadth of new technologies available and what these can achieve, the temptation may be to seek to

re-invent the wheel in the quest to find the next big thing. However, game design is a complex equation that has to take into account changing fashions. For example, the widespread use of touchscreen tablet technology has seen the technology applied to a host of amusement games, yet the actual play mechanics replicate traditional styles of fairground and amusements game play. Operators must also be convinced of their benefits. “Operators need to be in tune with what’s cool,” Dietmar Straubinger of TAB Austria said. “They are open to new technologies when they see that it brings enough benefits. Developers have to focus on maximising ROI and to keep players loyal - truly no easy challenge, but there is still enough potential to meet this with innovative and value-added products.” Meanwhile, the manager of two amusement arcades in Withernsea and Carlisle stole

more than £30,000 from gaming machines and safes, according to Coin-op Community. Marc Clarke, 26, of Hull, was trusted to manage Smiles For Miles arcade in Withernsea and a second arcade in Carlisle but he stole money from both premises over a two-year period. While working as a manager at Victoria Amusements in Carlisle, Clarke stole £16,409.26. He had worked at the arcade for 18 months after leaving Hull. Clarke was caught in February last year after a surprise audit revealed cash from the safe was missing and also the float from the roulette table. He was charged with theft in Carlisle, but failed to attend court and, instead, came back to Hull, where he started a new job as a supervisor at Smiles For Miles in Withernsea. Clarke failed to tell his new employers about the previous theft or court appearances and began stealing money from there as well. Over a 12-month

letter to the editor

Bidding a sad farewell Dear Sir, It is with great sadness that I learned of Claremont Automatics’ decision to withdraw from the supply of machines across all the sectors in which it operates. It’s almost 12 months to the day that a manufacturer introduced the dongle, and at the time increased the cost to purchase a reel based AWP by 58 per cent (yes 58 per cent!). This has been well documented, and at the time it was indicated that this machine price increase will have consequences for the industry. Claremont is a well-respected operator, and it’s a sad day for their staff, directors, and in fact for the industry, that it has opted to pull down the shutters three years short of their 50th anniversary. This industry was created and driven by independently-minded entrepreneurs who established companies such as Claremont, although now it would appear that the same industry they helped create is a very different beast indeed. With the seemingly unstoppable march of corporatism, perhaps we should all ask what is the cost of ‘progress’?

period, he stole £15,148.62. His regional supervisor changed the lock to the safe after noticing his behaviour was becoming erratic. Prosecutor Mark Kendall said: “In Carlisle, Clarke was the only person in the shop with the keys to the safe. When his manager carried out an audit, it revealed substantial inaccuracies. “He was spoken to and accepted he began by borrowing money, initially £900 from the safe for a property he wished to occupy. He said he continued borrowing money and it spiralled out of control. “He then came to East Yorkshire and obtained employment at an arcade. He had worked for his employer in the past and was trusted by them. As the person responsible for the arcade, he was the sole keyholder for the safe. Last September, his work pattern became erratic and suspicion arose.

“In March, the safe was locked by the regional manager so Clarke could not gain further access to it until an audit was carried out. There was a shortfall of more than £15,000. When he was challenged by the manager, he said ‘I didn’t realise I had taken that much’. Clarke pleaded guilty to two counts of theft. And finally, Wetherspoons chief Tim Martin has stated that a lot of pubs are still “greatly over-rented” as a legacy of the last financial boom, according to the Publican’s Morning Advertiser’s website. Martin said: “Out of London, in the pub trade there’s still a lot of pubs that are greatly overrented.” Announcing results for the 11 weeks to 14 July, JDW said it intends to provide an update on any impairment and onerous lease provisions at its full-year results. Martin added: “I think there’s quite a hot property market in

London. Out of London, in the pub trade there’s still a lot of pubs that are greatly overrented - and in London, as a matter of fact. The tail end of the last boom is a legacy of overrented pubs. I suppose the effects of this can last for a few decades in some places. There’s probably quite a lot of people seeking to open pubs and restaurants in the southeast but I would guess that demand is subdued in the rest of the country.” Martin suggested consumer confidence may have “turned a corner”. He concluded: “It’s about five years since the credit crunch and we haven’t gone to hell in a handcart, we’ve just had to tighten our belts a bit.”

Boss. After careful consideration,I decided that the programme was an opportunity for Talarius to demonstrate how it runs its Quicksilver brand and show potential customers what they could expect if they were to visit one of our venues. On the day filming began,I was put in a disguise to avoid detection from staff, and I then spent a week travelling around the UK in different Quicksilver venues to see what I would discover.Instead of any major shocks or disappointments, I was hugely relieved to find that our venues were full of fantastic staff with great personalities. My biggest frustration was that too many great stories, business ideas and examples of success stay localised within venues and do not get circulated around the company as examples of best practice. I want to change this and am currently working on a plan that allows venues to communicate better with head office. The programme was also a chance to see a lot about Quicksilver from a customer perspective. Watching the footage back last week, I was glad that it challenged the stereotypical and outdated image of arcades being grotty, dirty and sleazy. Instead bright, clean and transparent venues were on offer to customers with a significant investment plan in recent years having ensured that our venues are welcoming. The complimentary tea and coffee facilities combined

with fresh decoration and friendly staff helped to show why customers would want to spend time in a Quicksilver venue.I hope this has helped the reputation of the AGC sector as a whole. After watching the show, I would also hope that our customers will understand more about the pressures on the industry and appreciate the investment we have made in new machines and venues. We have managed to survive the smoking ban, regulatory reforms, the current lengthy recession and even a period where the maximum stake a customer could bet was temporarily reduced from £2 to £1 (with bookmakers near our venues being able to offer £100 per spin at the same time), but we continue to weather all storms and we have sustained sales growth ever since above average UK growth. I am really proud to have seen the fantastic work that our committed staff are undertaking every day, ensuring customers enjoy coming to our venues. It was a little nerve wracking when I first signed up to do the show and I had some concerns about what I might find, but overall I am delighted with it having finished the process. There are, of course, areas for improvement which we will look to remedy in the near future, but it is great to know that every day so many excellent staff are coming to work for Talarius. We want to make sure those staff feel valued and part of our future as the company continues to grow.”
