Alleged pub AWP thieves ROBBERY
Two men are up in front of the jury at Croydon Crown Court facing charges of grievous bodily harm after an attempted fruit machine robbery went wrong. A London-based landlord has described the moment he stood up to two burglars after they broke into his pub to steal money from the AWPs within. Jurors in the trial at Croydon Crown Court heard Danny Foley’s pub had been broken into about six weeks before they allegedly struck at the White Horse in Selhurst Road. On that occasion he had stayed upstairs and called the police who arrived just seconds too late, and £687 was taken. So on the morning of November 13, 2013 when he heard people breaking into the premises by smashing the glass in a back door of the pub, he grabbed a lightweight baseball bat from his kitchen and headed downstairs. Two men were trying to force open the fruit machines, one using a sledgehammer and the other with a spade. Giving evidence, Foley said: “My
thought was to get there to stop them stealing the money and to contain them. It wasn’t going to be a case of ‘Come on lads, pack it in’. There was a sledgehammer on the floor and I thought if one of them is going to pick it up then I’m going to pre-empt the strike. If I had shouted it would have been a two-on-one situation and so this was a pre-emptive strike to immobilise one of them. I struck him and he let out a breathless scream. Foley added: “He came away from the machine and I struck him again and he went down onto the floor onto his knees and I struck him again. He was holding on to me and I swore at him and that’s when he shouted out ‘John, John, help me, he’s doing me’.” The man in question, Michael Ryan, is visible on the CCTV footage which was shown to jurors at the court last week. He has pleaded guilty to this burglary. His accomplice, however, was wearing a balaclava and John Ryan denies this was him. Foley backed away from hitting Michael Ryan when he saw the second burglar coming

The deal will allow Funhouse Leisure to capitalise on Playnation’s scale, size and wide UK support network, whilst enabling the company to continue to operate as a single business. Adam Hodges, chief executive officer at Playnation (pictured), said:“2014 has been a great year for us and we have worked hard to find the right company for our first acquisition. FHL has a great team and is a well-established operator with a customer base that is complementary to our own. We are confident it will expand our reach in the family focused leisure sector.” Nasser Ghanchi, chief execu-

The court heard the other man passed the spade to Michael who allegedly hit Foley. The two defendants have been charged with GBH, which has a maximum sentence of 25 years, with the jury given the option of considering a lesser GBH charge, which has a maximum
sentence of five years. Prosecutor Richard Mandel told the court that when police arrived a black glove was found near the fruit machine allegedly smashed by John Ryan. He said: “John Ryan’s DNA was on it because he was wearing it at this burglary.” The men are also accused of burgling the Bird in Hand pub, Sydenham Road, Croydon, on November 29 last year. The trial continues.

It’s yet another indication of the quality and playability of our products and our consistent approach to designing great titles from the ground up. Sustained success at this level is a true mark of Bell-Fruit’s pedigree as a bona fide manufacturer - and this is reflected in these latest approvals.”
tive officer at Funhouse Leisure, said: “We’ve known the Playnation management team for a long time and believe that the FHL business will flourish under its new ownership. Playnation’s national service support operation and its central commercial functions can only build a n d improve on the great service that we currently provide to our customers in the hospitality and leisure sector. FHL complements and enhances Playnation’s offering in the family entertainment sector and will also enable us to tap into the family pub market. We look forward to working with the team at FHL to develop this new opportunity.” The move sees Hodges carry out his pledge of looking to expand Playnation’s activities in areas which enjoy high levels of footfall, while maximising dwell time and creating value for money experiences for families.

Local authorities handed greater control over prospective LBOs PLANNING PERMISSION
Gambling operators in England and Wales will have to obtain local planning permission to convert old banks, estate agencies and restaurants into LBOs in the future under plans announced by the government.
Majestic looks to increase portfolio BINGO
he government has announced that greater power will be given to local authorities to control the number of high street LBOs in their area. The Department for Communities and Local Government is to formally consult on the plans as part of a wider consultation on planning law issues this summer. A smaller planning use class containing betting shops will mean that where it is proposed to convert a bank, building society or estate agent into
T
an LBO, a planning application will be required. In addition, the government will remove the ability for other premises such as restaurants and pubs to change use to a betting shop without planning permission. All changes of use to a betting shop will therefore require planning permission in the future. Craig Connal QC, a litigation and compliance expert at law firm Pinsent Masons, said on the outlaw.com website:“Existing planning legislation in England and Wales, and
separately in Scotland, lays out different classifications on the use of property. Traditionally betting shops have fallen within the same ‘use class’ as banks which has meant that gambling operators have been attracted towards converting old banks or building society branches into betting shops because doing so did not constitute a change of use of the property and so did not require fresh planning consent from local authorities.” He added: “Gambling
operators will have to jump through the planning permission hoops in every case where they intend to open a new shop. The approach could potentially see the number of betting shops curbed in areas where there is a lot of local hostility towards them. However, at a time when banks are increasing shutting branches and moving business online local authorities face a challenge in balancing views that oppose the proliferation of betting shops with the need to ensure
that retail units on the high street do not lie empty.” In its policy paper, the government also said that it would promote new guidance being developed by the Gambling Commission on how local authorities can hold gambling operators to “their social responsibility commitments”. Operators wishing to open a betting shop still also need to obtain both an operating licence from the Commission and a premises licence from the relevant local authority.
ndependent bingo operator Majestic Bingo is Irumoured to be increasing its portfolio by eight clubs to a total of 15 within the next four weeks. The chain, which has industry veteran Mark Jepp on its board of directors, currently operates seven bingo halls in the UK. Jepp previously held senior titles with Gala Coral and the Rank Group. As announced in March’s Budget, the bingo duty cut from 20 per cent to 10 per cent looks to be making a positive impact on the sector already.
Bingo industry celebrates Budget boost with free nationwide games BINGO
undreds of thousands of bingo players who backed a campaign to boost their H favourite game will be celebrating the Chancellor’s reduction in bingo duty with free games of bingo in clubs across Britain. In the recent Budget, George Osborne reduced the duty on bingo clubs from 20 per cent to 10 per cent. It means bingo clubs across the UK can now invest in new premises, modernisation and jobs, and have been given an extra boost. To herald this win, the bingo industry is holding a nationwide “Bingo is Boosted!” celebration on 16 May. Bingo players and supportive MPs in nearly 400 communities across the UK will be treated to free games of bingo to say thank-you for supporting the campaign that resulted in this fabulous outcome.
The Boost Bingo campaign, run by The Bingo Association, gathered more than 330,000 petition signatures from bingo players across Britain. Nearly 50 MPs supported the launch of the campaign in their constituencies by visiting their local bingo club, with some trying their hand at calling numbers. The campaign reached a climax when the petition was delivered to the Chancellor’s residence at Number 11 Downing Street, on 26 February. Nearly 200 bingo players joined MPs for a celebratory procession past the Houses of Parliament.Rob Halfon MP, Brian Binley MP,Therese Coffey MP, Peter Aldous MP, Philip Davies MP and Meg Hillier MP came out to meet their constituents who had come to support the Boost Bingo campaign. Ed Timpson MP was also a supporter of the campaign. Chancellor of the Exchequer George
Osborne recognised the value of bingo clubs in communities across the UK, and said in the Budget:“They want the rate cut to 15 per cent. I can go further. It will be halved to 10 per cent.” Miles Baron, chief executive ofThe Bingo Association, said:“On behalf of The Bingo Association,I would like to say an enormous thank you to the 330,000 people who backed the Boost Bingo campaign by signing our petition, to the dozens of MPs who visited their local club and asked questions in the House, and to the Chancellor for recognising the importance of bingo clubs in nearly 400 communities across Britain. I’m sure the hundreds of thousands of people who enjoy a visit to their local bingo club every week will be delighted to hear the game they love has received this substantial boost. We would love to invite them all to celebrate with us on 16 May.”

Harding optimistic about coin-op market going forward DISTRIBUTORS
Despite the expected deluge of £1/£100 Category C machines to market being more of a steady trickle at present, Crown Direct’s managing director Dean Harding believes that the arcade, FEC and coastal sectors can all look forward to a positive 2014. ean Harding, managing director of Crown Direct, is optimistic for the future of UK coin-op, based on what he perceives to be a much more positive attitude pervading operators this year.He told Coinslot: “All the FEC and coastal operators want is a decent summer. This will be our strongest market sector in 2014.Operators came to the EAG show in January with a positive state of mind. This was followed up by a strong Easter. The staycation phenomenon is great for us,with so many people choosing to take domestic daybreaks and weekend trips rather than save up and shell out for an expensive trip to Spain for example.” Harding revealed that his firm’s portfolio - and customer base - for the FEC and seaside sectors is definitely its strongest. He added:“Adult gaming centres, while great places once cus-
D
tomers actually get inside them, are still battling against LBOs overall because it’s not a level playing field. Investment is naturally slower in the AGC sector, because operators can’t justify massive spending at present.” Currently, Crown’s balance of product is largely Category D FEC and amusement arcade-led, rather than gaming. Harding revealed:“Since the last Northern Showcase this time last year, we’ve taken on Concept Games, JPM and Amatic products, the latter being through Genesis. I think better economic conditions generally and the impact of MGD on the coastal
guys has helped create a more positive outlook.” Crown’s MD believes that his company is now in a position where it can guide operators in the right direction when it comes to picking and rotating the best products. “Having a number of our own arcade operations certainly helps as we can test products there and tweak them before they go out en masse. We told Whitehouse Leisure about how popular the Minions plush range was, for example, which precipitated a major roll-out on their part. Our role isn’t just simply sales, as we’ve definitely seen more people come to us for advice recently.” The straight-talking distributor continued:“The bottom line is that the best stuff sells the quickest! It’s no secret. We do extend terms, however, for equipment that might be a little slower at filling up the cashbox.” Speaking on the show floor at the recent Northern Showcase, Harding concluded:“We don’t charge people to showcase their machines here. It’s a free networking opportunity and still attracts operators from up and down the country. Plenty come down from Scotland, while Jeremy Godden has promised he’s going to make the trip from Margate - while doing a reconnaissance mission in Blackpool first! We can’t fault our customers’ commitment and we’re very appreciative of them.”7

stakeholder on the manufacturor sales side of the business Nwilloingdeny that the B3 market has been an uphill struggle over this past year. The amount of carpet space is limited as B3 quantities are capped, while operators who invested large sums of money in the digital compendiums over 2012 and 2013, are not in a hurry to replace the hardware. However, players are always hungry for new games and content and every so often, a manufacturer will come along with a proposition that makes operators sit up and take notice. Astra has done just
that, claims Phil Boulton, as his team at RLMS prepare to market the latest offering from the Bridgend manufacturer. “Slotto £500 compendium really has to be a serious contender for any operator’s B3 mix,” said Boulton. “Astra have really gone to town on this one, as the attractive A-Serve cabinet, comes complete with a bank of 22 fantastic B3 games on the MCU, including six classic Reel King Titles, a dip into the Novomatic range, as well as new games, Totally Bonkers, 500 to 1 and Fruit Farm. In addition, the operator can tailor the menu to suit their customer base, disabling games if they so wish and introducing new ones at any time,
thus lengthening the shelf life of this compendium. At a price tag of £3,995, including note recycler, if this doesn’t add some spark to the B3 market, I don’t know what will” Key account manager, Chris Widdowson showed off this compendium at the recent South West Show in Exeter. He commented: “Customers couldn’t believe the value in this overall B3 package and it was a delight to be able to take a string of orders on a B3 product. Not an everyday occurrence!” The firm added that this kind of offer isn’t the new benchmark price for B3, as it’s a case of when it’s gone it’s gone in respect to the AServe Cab.

Survey data combined New owners to keep to provide overall view amusements on South Parade Pier on problem gambling REPORTS
The data contained in the Scottish Health Survey and the Health Survey for England (2012) has been combined to provide a view of gambling participation and problem gambling that is representative of England and Scotland together. The data shows that 65 per cent of adults (around 31m people) in England and Scotland gambled in the past year. Excluding those who gamble only on the National Lottery draw, the figure is 43 per cent. The rate of problem gambling in the adult population is estimated to be 0.5 per cent on one measure and 0.4 per cent on the other measure used. Patterns of gambling participation indicate that the most popular forms of gambling are still the National Lottery, scratch cards, other lotteries and betting on horse racing. This is in line with the British Gambling Prevalence Surveys, which provided similar data up until 2010. In terms of problem gambling; prevalence appears to be higher amongst younger men and amongst those who had participated in seven or more activities in the past year. While firm trend figures will

ditional amusement arcade will be kept in place when the structure reopens next year. A consortium of six businessmen, headed by Southsea entrepreneur Lawrence Mendel, unveiled ambitious new plans to revive the troubled seaside attraction, which include the arcade and a new music venue. They also feature new bars and restaurants,as well as a ferry service to transport visitors to and from Portsmouth’s Gunwharf Quays shopping centre. Bernie Cooper, a property consultant working for the new owners, commented:“The consortium says it now has a fantastic opportunity to renovate a Southsea asset which has been neglected for some period of time. “We are not a charity. The purpose is to make money, but in a way that is beneficial to the
people of Portsmouth and Southsea. It’s a new era moving forward.” Visitors are currently barred from walking on or underneath the pier, as Portsmouth City Council has ruled the structure too dangerous after it was damaged by storms earlier in the year. The consortium is now looking to raise money to complete the necessary repair work, which is thought could cost as much as £5m. Cooper said:“The owners are people with substantial funds, but don’t have all the money that is needed yet because of the nature of the work.” A team of engineers is due assess the council’s report ordering the closure and then present it with a report detailing a full plan of works to be done over the next eight months. Blackpool secures £1m to fund ambitious tourism plans TOURISM
Blackpool’s top leisure firms have secured government backing for their bid to make the resort a leading international destination.
consortium of Blackpool leisure businesses has been awarded £1m to create a new tourism academy that it hopes will give it status as a leading international destination. The funding comes from the government’s Employer Ownership of Skills Pilot scheme and will co-fund £2m investment in skills training planned by the resort’s tourism employers over the next three years. The consortium is led by Blackpool Pleasure Beach and includes Merlin Entertainments, Cuerden Leisure, Blackpool Transport Services, Sandcastle Waterpark and Blackpool Zoo. John Child, managing director of Sandcastle Waterpark, said:“Our starting point will be to embrace the international customer service standard known as WorldHost, best known for training up thousands of volunteers at the London Olympics. “Our ambition is for Blackpool to be the first UK seaside resort to gain WorldHost destination status. “In doing so we will be training up our own frontline staff as well as offering highly subsidised training places to any tourism or retail business in the
A
resort.” Nigel Kilgallon, chairman of the BlackpoolTourism Academy Board and a director at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, commented:“Blackpool Tourism Academy is a consortium of key leisure attractions within the UK’s premier seaside resort, dedicated to boosting the skills of its seasonal and year round workforce. “With the assistance of this funding we can significantly expand the range of customer service, supervisory and management programmes on offer to our employees, and pioneer a new tourism practice apprenticeship.” The training available will range from gaming awareness, customer service, supervisory and management programmes, to spectator management, selling techniques and passenger carrying. At more the 19,000, the Fylde coast has the largest single concentration of seaside tourism jobs in the country. Bev Robinson, principal and chief executive of Blackpool and The Fylde College, which supported the consortium through the bidding process alongside Blackpool Council, said:“The Blackpool Tourism Academy will pioneer the design of a new apprenticeship framework to meet the needs of a modern tourism industry. “Each employer will have slightly different requirements so the apprenticeship framework will have bespoke modules such as spectator management or selling skills. Once designed, the aim is to create over 100 new apprentice opportunities for people in Blackpool.” Councillor Fred Jackson, cabinet member for regeneration, added:“This skills investment is fantastic boost for the many thousands of people who work so hard in our resort to achieve a first class visitor experience. “Not only will the Tourism Academy help our businesses to train up staff to be more welcoming but also it will also bring a large amount of money into the town, creating apprenticeships and improving our tourism offer as a whole.”
Hello Kitty attraction set to open THEME PARKS
fter a year in preparation, Drusillas Park in Alfriston A will open the UK’s first Hello Kitty attraction on May 18. Drusillas Park is a family business, acquired by Laurence and Christine Smith in 1997. Since then, the husband and wife team have invested heavily in the park and seen a footfall uplift. The introduction of Hello Kitty Secret Garden follows a recent trend within several UK visitor attractions to open areas dedicated to popular animated characters. The move is good news for the likes of Whitehouse Leisure, which supplies the plush toys, and SB Machines, which distributes the rides in the UK. Christine Smith told theme park trade press: “We
noticed the Hello Kitty brand about three years ago when we spotted lots of children coming to the park wearing Hello Kitty t-shirts and hats. After investigating the brand, we decided to approach owners Sanrio directly to suggest a venture to bring Hello Kitty to Drusillas. We completed the deal in July 2013.” The new attraction will include three specially designed Hello Kitty children’s rides: a teacup ride, a hopper ride and a car ride. There is also a Hello Kitty House and Parlour, as well as regular meet-and-greet opportunities with Hello Kitty herself. Hello Kitty Secret Garden is Drusillas Park’s biggest investment to date, estimated at around £1m.

Great British Pub Awards issues final call for nominations, with two new categories up for entry this year.
WORKING MEN’S CLUBS
he Trefelin Working Men’s Club in Port Talbot has shut its doors, four years after residents formed a committee to take over the club after it was forced to close due to crippling debts. Since then it has been used by scores of residents for groups and gatherings. Doug Rees, a former secretary for 20 years, told local press:“Whether it will re-open as a club I don’t know. It is such a blow. The amazing thing is over the last 12 months other clubs have been closing so pool teams have been coming to the club. The numbers have swelled. There is an 80th birthday coming up, but sadly it is not likely to take place.” Rees said when taking over the club four years ago the committee inherited a debt, which they have been paying off to brewer Heineken. “They have struggled to keep up.They did find

that the debt had been reduced.A public meeting was held on Monday to tell the locals about it.The next morning, the brewer shut the club. They have the legal charge because of the debt.” Port Talbot councillor Dennis Keogh added:“It is a loss to the community. It is the nearest thing the residents have got to a community centre.” Heineken UK spokesman David Jones concluded: “The new company that has been operating from the club premises (Trefelin Club Ltd) recently went into liquidation and the licence lapsed. It was therefore necessary for the appointed Receivers to secure the premises and they have temporarily closed the club whilst they seek a buyer for the property in order that the club can be re-opened at the earliest opportunity.”
he deadline for entries into the 2014 edition of the Great TBritish Pub Awards is rapidly approaching. Pubs have until the 22 May to be entered into the competition, which will select winners in 17 different categories. Entrants for best Community Pub, Best Freehouse, Best Partnership Pub and Best Managed Pub will all be scrutinised over the coming months, with gongs to be handed out on Thursday 11 September, 2014 at The Hilton, Park Lane, London. Two new categories have been added to this
years competition, with winners to be chosen for Best Cider Pub and Best Pub Loos. “Nothing can make you feel better than winning the award,” said Tom Gee, winner of Best Freehouse and overall title of Great British Pub of the Year 2013. “From a personal point of view and a team point of view it is amazing. In this business you have to take your boosts as much as you can and it is fantastic to have your progress recognised when you and your team work extremely hard.”

Recent developments in spares and parts include an increasing use of LED lighting over traditional bulbs and neon. LED lights can undergo 11 years of continuous use and are four times more power efficient than their predecessors. Also unlike old fashioned lighting, LEDs can operate at much higher, and lower, temperatures.

Meeting spares standards The Gambling Commission publishes exacting machine technical standards for every category of gaming machine in the UK. This high benchmark means that manufacturers must ensure that they secure a reliable and trustworthy parts supplier to ensure that they comply with government regulations.
Upping your game Post-manufacturing parts are not always about repairing faults. As technology advances, new parts can be added to improve existing machines. Examples include more reliable power supplies, note readers that can handle new currency and advanced crane systems that adjust difficulty on the fly.

ltimately, Suzo-Happ understands that providing the gaming and amusement world with a huge variety of spares and parts doesn’t count of much unless your products are fit for purpose and built to last.“We believe that using a reliable spares supplier is a key part of any operation,”said UK sales director,JohnVallis, “both industry and product knowledge coupled with vast stock holding and next day availability of parts, accessories and components are themselves vital components of any good spares company.” A high level of product knowledge underpins this strategy, helping operators faced with many choices when it comes to finding one product that will solve a particular problem.“At Suzo-Happ UK alone we have over 250 years of combined industry knowledge and experience,” said Vallis. “This enables us to best advise our customers on which products would best suit their needs.” This expertise also comes into play internally, as the company decides which new products to promote.“Our catalogue is an extension of our warehouse and is very much our shop window,” said Vallis,“and so, to this extent, we aim to have as many parts and accessories that we stock and sell as possible in the catalogue.Every year we produce a new condensed version of our Amusement Product Catalogue in time for EAG and this runs alongside our General Catalogue.” Among the key factors for choosing a product to promote is quality.“High quality parts being fitted to machines when they are being manufactured not only give the OEMS a good reputation for providing good quality and reliable product but they also provide piece of mind for the operator,”said

Vallis.“Knowing that the quality of the parts fitted are of a high standard and are readily available if they need to be replaced provides a great deal of reassurance for both manufacturers and operators alike.” He advises that operators follow the principle that “cheap certainly isn’t always cheerful.” OEMs can build their reputation by not only taking parts from Suzo-Happ, but also customising them to fit their own needs. “Suzo-Happ boasts a wide range of distribution and own manufactured products,” said Vallis.“We work very closely with all of our OEM customers to ensure that our products are suitable for their application and work with our development teams to produce bespoke parts and assemblies for our customers to use.” So long as there are machines there will be a need for spares, so it remains in the best interests of Suzo-Happ to funnel as much quality into the market as possible. “The machines spares sector is only really as stable as the market it is serving,” said Vallis.“We at don’t take anything for granted and, as such, are always looking for new ways to support our customers with parts and value added solutions. JFS anticipates a flock of summer cranes
Downtime must be kept to a minimum
John Ferguson Spares (JFS) expects cranes to be a top performer this summer, providing the company a chance to build on its reputation for fast, efficient service. perators on the hunt for a spares and parts supplier value swift service from a supplier they can trust. John Ferguson Spares (JFS) are acutely aware of this and work tirelessly to ensure that orders are fulfilled on time. “This is the most important part our business,”said John Ferguson, “keeping a healthy supply of parts and keeping a good relationship with our suppliers. Our customers expect a high level of service, normally next days on all parts so maintaining stock levels is so important to us.” Ferguson’s company has established a relationship with a manufacturer globally recognised as one of the finest crane machine creators in the world.“Luckily enough we are distributors of Elaut, who are recognised as the leader in innovation and quality,” he said. This keeps demand for JFS high and ensures that they can build lasting relationships with operators who depend on these products. This level of dependence means that when the machines break, operators want fast access to the pricing for the parts they need. JFS are soon to launch a re-designed website, which will provide customers with a quick and easy way to
O
alex lee foreword browse the company’s catalogue.“We are just finishing of our exciting new website where customers can download pdfs of spare parts for nearly all the Elaut range or find there spare parts by searching,” said Ferguson.“Our catalogue tends to show the more popular parts that break more often and will keep a machine out of order.” Having analysed sales over the last six months, Ferguson expects that an increasing interest in crane games will create a strong demand for replacement parts this summer.“Due to a very wet winter and spring,we sold a lot of electrical equipment,” he said,“and I think crane spares will be our best line. They were very popular last year with the Despicable Me Toys range and we are currently working on some new projects which will be released in the summer.” However, as financial pressure continues to be excerpted on amusement operators around the country, some venues are turning to cheaper alternatives.“I do feel now though, that companies are looking for inferior quality at cheaper prices,” said Ferguson,“but in the long run this is not always prudent as quality always shine through in the end.”
OPERATORS
Reliable spares ‘a must’ for Kossway Regional operators Kossway is responsible for machines spread all across London and the South West, with a responsibility to its customers to keep them running at all times. s a leading independent gaming and amusements machine supplier to members’ clubs, pubs, regional A breweries, bookmakers, casinos and motorway service stations throughout London and the South of England, Kossway operates a number of machines spread across a wide area. For them, ensuring that they have a reliable supplier of parts and spares to keep their machines’ uptime at its highest possible rate is an absolute necessity. “It’s a must on all counts,” said Terry Smith, the company’s machine movements manager. Kossway’s offering includes everything from AWPs and pool tables to jukeboxes and security systems. Being able to swiftly secure parts for this diverse range of products forms an important part of the business. With spares being such an important component, it would be tempting to suggest that companies such as Kossway would factor in the cost of replacement parts when choosing which machines to purchase. However, the company’s first responsibility is the profit of its customers and the Coinslot MAY 16 - MAY 22, 2014
operator is happy to bear the burden of expensive parts if the machine is profitable.“We purchase on test performance,” said Smith,“in order to aid our customers’ cash box revenue.” That strategy has continued to pay dividends, with Kossway’s machines performing well through the first part of 2014.The recent increase in jackpots for Cat C machines to £100 is likely to have played a factor in this and the company are aware that increased takings may not be due to a large uptick in player numbers.“Our machines are performing very well,” said Smith,“but this may have something to do with the larger jackpots.” These newer machines, however, are also likely to cost Kossway less in the long run, as the unstoppable progress of parts development makes them stronger and longer lasting.“We have found the machines get more and more reliable as technology advances,” said Smith. Products that maintain optimum performance for longer means decreased costs, bothi in purchasing parts and dispatching engineers to conduct repairs on site.
Make no bones about it, the UK coin-op industry would simply grind to a jarring halt were it not for the sterling efforts of the companies that offer a comprehensive spares, repairs, parts and peripherals service. othing is certain but death, taxes and machine downtime. While the average operator can do little N or nothing about the first two certainties, the spares and component sector is always right on hand to ensure the third is kept to an absolute minimum. The limelight is inevitably reserved for the latest machine innovations coming to market, and rightly so, but it is the spares, peripherals and repairs sector which provides the backbone of the coin-op industry. Sometimes overlooked and often taken for granted, this sector, known for the timely provision of spares, repairs and components, may not be the most glamorous but without it an industry that prides itself on speed, product knowledge and efficiency would soon cease to function. The oft-reported, yet still devastating, effects of a double-dip recession, the smoke ban, the global economic slowdown and the unforeseen consequences of the Gambling Act have dictated that increasing numbers of products are staying longer on the arcade floor - or reappearing as refurbs - thus the need for reliable components and swift, efficient technical back-up has never been greater. The spares and repairs sector of the UK coin-op industry will always play a vital role. Regardless of the trends, technology and legislation applicable to all machines - from hi-tech, LED-laden, twin screen slots to arcade staples such as kickers, pushers, cranes and pool tables - they will inevitably require spare parts, replacement components and a service at some stage of their lifespan. Despite the rise of digital gaming content which can be updated online - or via a dongle - spares, peripherals and, most importantly, skilled engineers capable of getting the job done quickly, simply cannot be sent via email or text message. It may not be the most obvious nor lauded facet of the coin-op industry, but the spares and repairs sector is one of the most vital, with machine downtime being the bane of operators’ lives. While the consistent and reliable supply of parts and peripherals may not stand up to the most probing analysis, it would be true to say that this very specialist sector has become an expected part of the extended product package and for that reason deserves recognition and coverage.

1. THE GAME The game shall be known as 8 Ball Pool and referred to in these rules as ‘the game’. It is intended that players and teams should play 8 Ball Pool in the true spirit of the game and in a sportsmanlike manner. No penalty will be incurred. the balls to be re-racked. This applies even if other balls, including the cue ball are ocketed as well.

7. LOSS OF GAME a) If a player pockets the 8 ball (black) before he/she pockets all balls in his/her own group, except as allowed under rule 4g, he/she loses the game. b) A player going in off the 8 ball(black) when the 8 ball (black) is potted, loses the game. c) A player who clearly fails to make any attempt to play a ball of his/her own group will lose the game. d) If a player seeks to gain advantage by deliberately touching a moving ball or retrieving a ball dropping into the pocket he/she shall lose the game.

Report ... Regional Events NORTHERN SHOWCASE: MANUFACTURING PERSPECTIVE
Rogers upbeat about Astra Games’ prospects On the back of a successful Easter trading period, Astra Games’ Alan Rogers believes the Bridgend-based firm is perfectly poised to maximise further opportunities for growth in the UK coin-op sector. stra Games had seven products on the show floor at the Northern Showcase last week, ranging from Cat C Lite and Cat C through to Cat B3. At the two-day trade event, the firm’s Alan Rogers spoke candidly to Coinslot about his views on the industry. He told Coinslot:“There are a lot of things happening in the industry at present and events such as these bring in operators from all over the country, so it’s interesting to meet up with everyone. It’s very useful, for example, to get a new steer on the £1/£100 stake and prize level for Cat C.You simply can’t beat seeing new products in close proximity – it helps the flow of creativity.” Rogers believes Easter went well for operators in general. He said: “It looks like we’ve cornered the market with our Cat D Classic range. We’ve also received encouraging reports regarding cashbox figures for Streak (£100 jackpot) and Party Slots £100.” Astra recently introduced Slotto 500 in the Cat B3
A
sector. Rogers explained:“It’s an operator-controlled compendium of 22 games. Some of the games had been originally designed for one particular sector but hadn’t migrated onto another. This way, using Game Manager, which is a simple-to-use drag and drop interface, operators can control precisely which games from the suite are best suited to their premises. They can choose all 22 if they so desire, but they’ll have the best view on what they believe will succeed for their operation. We’ve already taken orders for this and it’s only been available for a few days.” In terms of looking ahead to the rest of 2014, Rogers believes that reel-based product shouldn’t be overlooked. He stated: “Reel-based games are still very important to the UK coin-op industry. Operators are being more cautious about what they are spending. We all know that, overall, ROI isn’t what it was in days gone by, but we know that at Astra we have products with proven cashbox returns. This is an entertainment business and sometimes people lose sight of that.”
Rogers continued:“To make sure we intrinsically understand players’ needs, we employ them! That’s one of the many ways in which we can keep in touch. Familiarity is important to players. People don’t necessarily want to have to learn a new game from scratch every single time with money they haven’t got. They want to feel comfortable with the concept in front of them.We work hard at learning how best to maximise player entertainment and spend.” He concluded:“Both January shows were great in terms of quality visitors and sales are a by-product of a successful show. There’s a general feeling of optimism pervading the industry at present, but that fact notwithstanding we make sure we don’t lose sight of our roots, which is the street market. While we’re already strong in the bingo market, the bingo duty cut will help bring more people in, which will be beneficial to us. So long as we look after the street market, innovate and deliver concepts with player appeal we’ll continue to lead the way.”
NORTHERN SHOWCASE: MANUFACTURING PERSPECTIVE
Steady growth in a finite space Reflex Gaming took four products to the recent Northern Showcase in Chorley - Apollo 100 Cat C video compendium, Starlight Cat C Lite video compendium, Best of British hitech Cat C and Fiddle A Fortune Cat C. uentin Stott, managing director of Reflex Gaming, believes his biggest challenge at present is maintaining the rate of growth his firm has experienced in the last few years. He told Coinslot: “When you consider that the market is of a finite size and, in the case of the pub sector, shrinking due to more pubs becoming focussed on food sales, it’s a big ask. Our growth is, however, at a higher and healthier level than you could expect against a backdrop that is still reasonably depressed,
Q
Coinslot MAY 16 - MAY 22, 2014
despite the broader economy looking in a slightly better state than it was. We certainly can’t complain with the position we’ve achieved within the industry.”
Stott is of the opinion that it’s vital to support regional events.“It gives manufacturers another opportunity to get products physically out there and in front of people. Feedback is important too inasmuch as we can fine tune our products based on operators’ comments, which is an obvious benefit to us. Furthermore, we can gain an insight into what’s going on elsewhere and products coming from other manufacturers can give us a creative spark and an opportunity to improve what we’re doing.” Reflex’s MD sees the bingo duty cut as very good news for the sector as eventually additional spend on machines will filter down. He added:“A substantial proportion of our business is Category C focussed and since the Triennial operators have been on the look-out for new concepts in terms of games design and development. For us, on the pub side, Best of British has now got full approval, while Fiddle A Fortune’s early test results have
been very good. Apollo 100, meanwhile, has had a very positive reaction. We reckon this could be down to the fact that we’ve set the maximum stake at 50p.We figured that for a £1 a go, people may as well play a B3 machine. We’re going down to London where a lot of the Apollo 100s are positioned to collect more evidence as to why it’s done so well.” The Newark-based outfit is still putting out smartphone app versions of its games. “It’s an interesting sector for us, despite being a terrestrial business. We’re focussed on growing this side of the business too and for the time being it’s a good thing that our game apps move parallel with the physical products.” Stott concluded:“We’ve noticed that the AGC sector has become more interested in taking on Cat C machines than before the Triennial, but they haven’t exactly had the rub of the green of late in terms of HMRC repayments and of course competition from LBOs.”

BACTA SOUTH WEST OPEN DAY

1 REDEMPTION IS KING FOR HARRY LEVY “The only growth industry is tickets,” said Harry Levy’s Micky Kennedy, “that’s what it’s all about.” The company’s stand at the South West was a testament to that claim, including single player cranes and fruit machines that vend tickets. “Tickets with fruit machines has been going about three years now and comes in single players an multiplayers,” said Kennedy. The largest machine on show was a balloon bursting prize vend designed to support the kinds of high-end electrical prizes that are becoming increasingly popular. “Wherever you are on the seaside I think there’s been a change from people going in and playing coin fruit machines to amusement machines,” said Kennedy. “It’s gone full circle.” 2 NAMCO PRIZES QUALITY ON REDEMPTION Namco Prizes believes that it has played a major role in increasing the profile of redemption games as it works to increase the quality of prizes available in arcades around the country. Particularly, in the balmy south west, stocking desirable rewards for redemption counters and crane machines is key to having a successful summer. “It’s more retail products, and less seaside tat,” said sales office manager, Darrell Simmonds. “If someone’s got a prize shop that’s got good quality stuff, it makes it different. People come in and see stuff that people can’t buy in the shops.” 3 SEGA DESIRES THE PERSONAL TOUCH With customers all across the UK and beyond, it can be tricky for Sega Amuesments’ representatives to develop a personal connection with their customers. Which makes events such as BACTA South West a vital opportunity for them to network.
3
6 “Obviously Sega’s name is out there,” said sales executive, Adam Garrett. “It’s just good to get to know your customers more. Seeing people’s faces, instead of constantly doing business over the phone.” Many of these customers came to take a look at Sega’s products, which were spilling out beyond the confines of its stand. “You might know them,” said Garrett, “but you haven’t got time to have a conversation with them. At the show you can have more of a laugh.” 4 MODERN UPGRADES FROM SUZO-HAPP The new £100 jackpot Cat C machines have changed the landscape of arcades in many areas of the country, including the South West. Among the products that Suzo-Happ supplies, the new NV11 note recycler is likely to be of interest to operators and manufacturers in the region. “There’ll be no coin starvation because you’re paying out in notes,” said UK regional sales manager, Norman Ridall. The SuzoHapp stand also featured an innovative USB port, designed to fit into a wide array of gaming and amusement machines. “While people are playing they can charge their phone up,” said Riddall, “which will keep them on the machine a little bit longer.” 5 HURDLES TO CLEAR FOR ULTIMATE FAN Ultimate Fan’s innovative FVR Virtual Racing game attracted a lot of attention at EAG, but with early 2014 in the books, operators have reported wildly variable results. “If you want an honest reaction, it’s got mixed results at the moment,” said sales manager, Rex Sargent (picture, right). “It’s either very good or very bad.” Referring to the challenges presented by the company’s unusual horse racing game, Sargent said that, “it doesn’t look like the normal fruit machine,
so people are a bit wary of going to it. We’ll tweak it one way or the other to finally get there.” Meanwhile, the Ultimate Fan’s Revolver multi-game has been performing excellently in the company’s new cabinet. 6 WESSEX SHARES INNOVATIONS Wessex Coin came to BACTA South West with the aim of meeting some of its valuable customers and showing off a few machines they may not have had the chance to analyse. “I’ve brought a machine from Storm games and two from Reflex,” said sales executive, Rod Haggett. “The Storm games we’ve been distributing for a little while now and they’re doing very well. A lot of the operators down here haven’t seen that particular machine.” This is particularly important, given the distance between this region and the capital. “There’s quite a few that don’t [travel to EAG],” said Haggett, “because it’s so far for the to go up there. To lose a day or a couple of days; this is much easier and that’s the beauty of it.” 7 WHITEHOUSE SPANS THE SPECTRUM For plush specialists Whitehouse Leisure, the display put on at BACTA South West was about showing the often overlooked depth that soft toy prizes posses. “It’s for teenagers and students well,” said sales executive, Gavin Todd. “It was good last year and is equally good this year, so it’s not all aimed at the kids.” Ranges including those based on Seth MacFarlane’s foul-mouthed movie creative, Ted, are proving popular with an older demographic. Meanwhile, so ranges prove perennially popular across all segments of the public. “The Despicable Me toys go right through the age range,” said Todd, “that’s why they’ve been so popular.” Coinslot MAY 16 - MAY 22, 2014

SAM tables chosen for pool tournaments
AM Leisure has been selected as the supplier to the annual Golden 8 Ball tournament and the BAPTO National Finals for the foreseeable future. Organisers or the events have purchased 32 brand new SAM Atlantic tables to mark the return of BAPTO to Blackpool in 2014. “We see this as a resounding vote of confidence in SAM pool tables from major figures in the UK pool industry,” said SAM Leisure managing director Gary Drage. The BAPTO Finals Weekend is the UK’s premier amateur event and been held annually for almost 40 years. The Golden 8 Ball has, in recent years, cemented itself on the pool calendar as the summer tournament for skilled pub players - very much in the same vein as the BAPTO Autumn model. Michael Dicks, BAPTO chairman, commented: “BAPTO has used Sam Tables for 15 years, and we are delighted to confirm that the SAM Atlantic, which we believe to be the best quality table on the
S
market currently available, will be used at our Annual ‘Grand Finals’ weekend as we return to Blackpool with this long established event now in its 38th year. “BAPTO have been very happy with the way SAM tables have performed at their events, while Golden 8 Ball has been held on a variety of models. For these two champions of the sport to now choose SAM tables and commit to them in this major way is testament to the outstanding quality, reliability and consistency SAM tables deliver to the player and tournament organisers.” Drage added: “SAM Leisure is possibly best known for supplying high-earning, fun machines into the bowling and FEC sector. But novelty can wear off. It’s only by building tables to professional standards that foster loyalty and repeat play to acquire skill that table games can endure. It’s no coincidence that SAM tables continue to be used in professional tournaments internationally - in American pool, English pool, and table football.”

Comment Exciting times for Cat C sector
“
Category C still reeling them in
alex lee comment lowly but surely Cat C games which pay out £100 following the Triennial prize uplift back in January are beginning to permeate the market, and from what I’ve seen the UK coin-op industry has once again proved that it can produce entertaining machines that players are prepared to shove their hard-earned into. The Cat C or, for those who prefer acronyms to abbreviations,AWP sector is undoubtedly one of the industry’s staples and an inevitable by-product is that it has become one of the most heavily-debated machine categories in the UK coin-op sector. In fact, you could reasonably argue that it provides the benchmark for the rest of the amusement and soft gaming business. It is with happiness and relief, therefore, that the latest raft of £1/£100 products that have emerged from the UK’s leading manufacturers are - based on both anecdotal and factual evidence - actually pretty good! While reel-based play still remains, familiarity in this particular case hasn’t bred contempt. We all know that this style of gameplay won’t last forever, but the fact of the matter is that this pub staple now serves a dual purpose. It’s still the quintessential pocket-money change entertainment product, but is now imbued
S
with a top prize that is actually worth something. Continued research and development with reference to broadband connections, online updates, the synergy between coin-op and apps and the interconnectivity of products across an entire estate is of course being rigorously carried out behind the scenes, yet the future for Cat C gameplay remains unpredictable. Certainly, the AWP will in some way tread the digital path, which will hopefully lead us all to those full cashboxes we all crave. What can be guaranteed is that when the digitalAWP becomes the norm, there’ll be plenty of nostalgic and respectful mentions of those mechanical reels that have paved the way for future development and creation. Furthermore, there are plenty of respected stakeholders in the industry that believe that to do away with the mech reel altogether would be an act of folly. Finally, what we do know is that the UK manufacturing sector is consistently good at producing games that stand up to both player scrutiny and the test of time - and often this is down to increased discussion with distributors who have built up good relationships with operators. From a player’s perspective - mine that is I’ve never won £100 from a fruit machine but that’s never stopped me trying!

alex lee media watch he International Center for the History of Electronic TGames, a “play partner” of The Strong, an interactive museum, has acquired an extraordinary part of early video game history, according to the Vending Times. The collection originating from Atari Games’ coin-op division includes the source code of such iconic games as Asteroids, Missile Command and Centipede. ICHEG has also obtained one of two known existing units of the legendary unreleased coin-op game Maze Invaders. The entire collection was hauled on 22 pallets from a collector in California to ICHEG in Rochester, NY, and those artifacts made their way to the museum through a circuitous route. Atari Games was founded 42 years ago - June 27, 1972, in Milpitas, CA. It was sold to Warner Communications in 1984, to Namco the following year and to Midway Games in
1996. The latter shuttered Atari in 2003, but the name has been revived as a consumer video game source. Other classic Atari arcade video titles are Marble Madness, Paperboy and Gauntlet. Atari even had a short-lived pinball machine division. Collector Scott Evans, who worked in electronics recycling, purchased the collection when Atari was liquidated by Midway. While some of the material had been exhibited previously, the vast majority of it has remained in storage. Among the items contained in the collection are internal memos, focus group reports, handwritten memos, production schedules and cost estimates, along with test market reports, original images for ad campaigns, circuit boards and film transfers for cabinet art. The source code for all the games between 1976 and 1983 is stored on antique 8ins floppy
disks from the era. There are also about 3,000 videotapes on Betamax, VHS and other legacy formats that include everything from gameplay to industry events and corporate parties. “It will take years to archive,” said Jeremy Saucier, assistant director of the museum. “On one hand, the artwork can easily be sorted, conserved and archived. Other things, however, like our collection of source code for virtually all the games from 1976 to 1983, are on floppy disks that will take lots of time to examine. When you think of the different kinds of media, and media that are 20 years old, it poses certain challenges to archiving it and making it accessible. But we’re in the right place to do it.” Among the first discoveries were handwritten notes on game controls by Asteroids designer Ed Logg. Saucier believes material like this will uncover the stories behind the

“Gamers have a tendency to look at the early years of gaming through rose-coloured glasses. Not everything about those days was as great as you may remember; we recently ran through several ways that playing games used to suck. However, not everything about those days was worse.”

immensely popular games, and the ones that never made it, like Gremlins. “The data will give us a broader sense of how the industry worked, and how Atari worked within the industry,” he said. Closer to home, members of a working men’s club raised a glass to mark 30 years of Liz Tyrer-Lavelle pulling pints behind the bar, according to the Oxford Mail. Didcot’s Marlborough Club is now the home to three snooker teams, three darts teams, a table tennis club and is the home of Didcot Rugby club. Tyrer-Lavelle manages 16 staff and helps co-ordinate snooker, table tennis and bar billiards and the rugby club’s residency. Parents Cliff and Pat Bradbeer ran the club in the 1970s, and now Tyrer-Lavelle is showing the ropes to daughter Katie. The club opened in 1928 with members paying rent until they bought the building in 1947.
They were mostly railway workers and staff at the Royal Army Ordnance Corps depot at Didcot. Tyrer-Lavelle added: “We are in a prime position and the centre of Didcot, I’ve got good staff and I look after them, and they pay it back.” And finally, it’s a ‘Bull’s Eye’ for Bingo Bob - who’s been calling out the numbers for friends at Coventry Pioneer Hall for 50 years, according to the Coventry Telegraph. The bingo caller, 91, still heads out twice a week to call the numbers for a captive audience of 30 members. Bob McGorman, an Irishman who arrived in Coventry from County Monaghan in 1955, recalled: “It was April 13, 1964 the first time bingo had been called in the Pioneer Hall. As I walked into the club, someone told me bingo was about to start. I didn’t want to play, but I stood on the stage watching the man calling the bingo, and
then halfway through he turned to me and said, ‘Here - you have a go’. I took over, and I’ve been doing it ever since.” Bob’s fellow Pioneer Hall members surprised him with a cake and a card to mark his 50 years of service. But Bob, a widower, has no intention of giving up his longest-standing hobby. He said: “Doing the bingo gets you out of the house for a few hours to meet with your friends. I’ve made a lot of friends through the club and that means a lot to me. I think I must be the oldest bingo caller in the country, and I won’t be stepping down.”
Evolution not revolution for new IAAPA chair Mario Mamon, the new chairman of IAAPA, discusses the current issues facing the trade body which represents the international attraction and theme park sector.
mario mamon politics travel extensively around the world to represent the association in Ievents and meetings, as well as visit as many member attractions and national associations as possible. Throughout these travels I promote the‘OneWorld,One IAAPA’mantra and talk about the benefits I’ve enjoyed as a member of association myself. I’m also helping lead the implementation of IAAPA’s 2013-15 Strategic Plan and the new governance and organisational initiatives that were approved last year by the board. Even though IAAPA is undergoing continuous change and evolution into a truly global association,my plans are simple… nothing drastic and revolutionary. I’m focusing on the existing strategic and business plans and gradual implementation of the governance and organisational initiatives. Current challenges include safety standards development and harmonisation, protection of intellectual property rights, education and training. Safety is our top priority whether it be in rides, facilities, food or merchandise. Safety standards may be different based on which part of the world you are in.We want to encourage the consistent adoption of the existing safety standards, like ASTM International and EN, around the globe. The protection of intellectual property rights refers to various rides and attractions, ideas and innovations, which are sometimes copied by different groups from all geographies of the world. They are insights and hands-on experience that I can share in my role as chairman. Having been part of the IAAPA“officialdom” since I was elected as third vice-chairman in 2010 has helped me prepare for the chairman’s position. Moving through the various leadership roles I’ve developed an understanding that there should be respect for the innovators and inventors and
we need to do what we can to protect and encourage innovation. Quality education and training, in all aspects of the industry, are needed as the industry continues to grow all over the world, especially in the AsiaPacific region. Education and training not only hone and upgrade skill sets to meet or exceed international standards, they also prepare the next generation of workers, managers, and leaders in the industry. Recent successes of IAAPA include the ongoing growth and development of the association’s trade shows and conferences around the world. They showcase the best and newest products and services in the industry, and provide outstanding educational programmes that can enhance the state and standard of the industry. The continuing evolution of IAAPA into a global association through the adoption of its three-year strategic plan and the gradual implementation of governance initiatives are very definitive calls to action that will benefit the industry in the years to come. The main thing that excites me is that this industry transcends all generations and will stand the test of time. I’m also excited because it involves people and family, the latter being very important to me personally. This industry is able to evolve and morph itself based on what guests want, using technology and the like, but always not forgetting superlative guest service as integral to the continued success of the industry. I’m also excited about the continued potential of the industry in its various forms of rides and attractions, entertainment, food and merchandise,to name a few. I see the industry developing based on the needs and wants of its consumer base.Attractions operators will always be on the lookout for “what’s in”and“what’s not”.It’s a continuously evolving process. With thanks to Attractions Management
