The Gambling Commiss DATA
The Gambling Commission’s industry statistics are published twice a year (usually June and November). This document provides the latest information on each industry sector arcades, betting, bingo, casinos, gaming machine manufacturers, lotteries (other than the National Lottery) and remote gambling. According to the Commission: “Up to March 2012, premises figures reported in this document were based on licensing authority notifications. Data from this source tended to be somewhat incomplete.” As a result, from March 2013 onwards, premises figures are based on operators’ most recent regulatory return. This approach relies solely on operators for information on their premises and provides the most robust premises information to date.
It added: “Because the source of the data has changed, the figures from 31 March 2013 onwards should be seen as the first points in a new series and not compared to the previous data.” Despite some predictable further industry contraction, however, there are plenty of signs that at least certain sectors of the UK coinop market are beginning to fight back and prove that where there is a coin mech there can be brass. Although the Commission has been collecting data on
Software solution c boost TabBOXX pe OPERATORS
K national machine operator U Gamestec is planning to offer an improved experience for customers of its TabBOXX pull-tab lottery terminals. Operated exclusively by the company in the pub sector, the units will incorporate an all-new software solution created by FatSpanner. The aim, according to the operator, is to enhance functionality from a customer perspective and as a generator of money for good causes. Gamestec and TabBOXX have raised more than £1m for charities including the Roy Castle Lung Foundation and The Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust through the sale of pull-tab tickets. Both firms, however, seek to build on that success and see FatSpanner’s software solution
as a key driver in taking the terminals to the next level. Explaining more, Gamestec product manager Stefan Podolanski noted:“We wanted to reposition the way in whichTabBOXX is perceived from merely being a pull tab lottery vending machine to a terminal with much more functionality. The new software being incorporated into the machine will allow connectivity, real time advertising space, SMS marketing and, should we wish, the ability to ‘regionalise’ some of our activities. However, the intrinsic appeal of TabBOXX remains - it still vends a paper ticket offering the chance to win a range of prizes worth up to £2,000 in the pub environment.” Edward Nation, UK operations manager for TabBOXX,

Commission figures reveal industry ups and downs REPORT
The most recently-published Gambling Commission Industry Statistics document show that Category B1, B2, B3 and D machine numbers have increased between October 2012-September 2013. But, as usual, there is devil in some of the detail. hile certain sectors of the UK coin-op industry have seen an uplift since 2012, others haven’t been quite so fortunate, according to the latest Gambling Commission Industry Statistics. Numbers of Cat B1,B2,B3 and D machine numbers have increased in recent years, according to the Gambling Commission, but Category B4 and C machines have declined during the same period. Whilst Category D machines have seen large growth since April 2011March 2012, the increase can in part be accounted for by the reporting of electronic bingo terminals by a small number of operators. The total GGY for Category B1, B2, B3 and D machines across all gambling sectors showed growth in each of the reporting periods.B2 Category machines generated 67 per cent of the total machines GGY in the period October 2012-September 2013. As the Commission does not license pubs, clubs, working men’s clubs or family entertainment centres operating under a local authority permit, it does not collect regulatory returns for those businesses. The number of people working in the industry has declined slightly overall between March 2013 and September 2013,continuing the trend seen in previous publications. The lotteries (ELM external lottery managers) and remote sectors experienced an increase in the number of employees between March 2013 and September 2013. All other sectors reported a decrease. In previous publications, headcount figures were averaged dependent upon the number of returns submitted within the reporting period. This publication, however, uses the figures detailed on the latest regulatory return submitted before the reporting date,in

order to provide the most accurate and up to date figures possible. As at 31 March 2014, there were 508 adult gaming centre licences and 179 family entertainment centre licences held by 554 operators. FEC employee numbers have been in steady decline since 2009. For AGCs,employee numbers have fallen across the five-year period (in part driven by the recording of staff not directly involved in the AGC). The average number of gaming machines in AGCs has declined year-on-year across the five-year period. In the period October 2012September 2013, the number of gaming machines in AGCs
accounted for 30 per cent (31 per cent in April 2012-March 2013) of the total number of machines across all regulated gambling sectors. Gaming machine GGY in AGCs accounted for 12 per cent (12 per cent in April 2012-March 2013) of gaming machine GGY across all sectors. B3 GGY has grown 31 per cent since April 2009-March 2010. In the period October 2012-September 2013,the number of gaming machines in FECs accounted for 18 per cent (18 per cent in April 2012March 2013) of the total number of machines across all regulated gambling sectors. Gaming machine GGY in FECs accounted for 3 per cent (3 per cent inApril 2012-March 2013) of gaming machine GGY across all sectors. Unsurprisingly, the number of employees in the gaming machine technical sector (the Commission’s parlance for manufacturers, suppliers and software manufacturers) has dwindled from 7,528 on 31 March 2010 to 6,648 on 30 September 2013.

cillor Brian Cloke attended the event as a resident. He told local press: “Among the ideas included extending the toilet facilities to add showers to encourage water sports. People also want to see the seafront and town to feel more close together.” Councillor Kevan Hough, chair of the regeneration partnership’s Seafront Improvement Group, said: “It is important as many people as possible have their say and tell us what they want to see. There was
a lot of support for the beach huts. The architect has taken the ideas and will work towards a draft plan.” The plans to improve the town’s promenade are one of many projects taking place to improve Withernsea, which has a number of arcades and FECs including Teddy’s Amusements’ Fantasy Island, Game King, Smiles For Miles and W & J Shaws Pastimes. Work is nearing completion on a new £960,000 fishing compound in the town
and more than £400,000 is being spent to create the Meridian Centre, a multifunctional community hall. Cllr Hough added: “All these projects show the town is moving forward. If people see this kind of investment, there is more chance they will invest in the town. It also increases confidence in Withernsea.” It is hoped a plan could be in place by the end of August. Once the plan is complete, the group will look at possible funding and grants.
he effectiveness of gambling legislation has been attacked by a Dundee councillor after the Tlicensing board allowed Tesco staff to install two slot machines in their canteen. Councillor Lesley Brennan (pictured) bemoaned the fact that restricted legal grounds made it impossible for the council’s licensing board to block the move. The supermarket’s staff social committee club sought the machines for the Tesco Extra store on Kingsway West, with a representative explaining the cash raised from employees playing the machines would boost charity fundraising efforts. Councillor Brennan asked if the council could block the move, but was told the measures at their disposal were too limited. “The grounds for objection relate to whether children have access to the machines and whether the applicant has had a previous gaming licence revoked,” she told local press. “Obviously in this case none of these things apply as the venue is a supermarket staff canteen.” She continued:“A big issue with problem gambling is access to gambling opportunities, and I am concerned about this aspect with Tesco. Will there be any regulation or control over employees’ use of the machines? When I asked about what protection there would be for people who have a problem with their gambling, the Tesco representative said this would be a human resources issue for the company.” Brennan concluded:“I don’t really think this is the point, but the case sums up the inadequacy of gambling legislation and how the hands of the council are tied.” The licensing board endorsed the previous decision of the policy and resources committee in calling for legal changes to allow gambling to be more tightly controlled. The council want power over the location and number of betting offices to be devolved back to local councils and to regulate and restrict advertising of gambling establishments and sites.Their constitution submitted with their application said the committee’s role is to use revenue from the pool table and slot machines to organise staff events, through a social fund. There is no reference to controls for slot machine use, although there is a paragraph stating that all members shall be treated with respect.

Bingo’s recovery is more frail than most would care to believe. Latest Gambling Commission statistics reveal that the sector - pre Budget changes it should be said - are worringly down with £170m+ lost from the sector in the year to September 2013. But, the sector remains a crucial player in the gaming machines sector, although land based operations were conceding to the downward trends. Not a happy picture, true, but changes in tax rates may offer some respite in the current accounting term?
Mechanised bingo continues to dominate land-based sector
BINGO
ccording to the Gambling Commission’s latest Industry StatisA tics document, the overall turnover figures for bingo have decreased by 13 per cent between the reporting periods (October 2012-September 2013). Main stage bingo saw turnover decline by more than £104m (15 per cent), Prize bingo turnover has declined nearly £44m (8 per cent) and mechanised bingo turnover has declined by £31.5m (60 per cent) between the reporting periods. The overall turnover figures for bingo indicate that mechanised bingo continues to be the most profitable bingo game, reporting GGY of over £260m from October 2012-
September 2013. Main stage bingo and prize bingo GGY have declined by over £25m and £18m respectively across the reporting periods. The make-up of gaming machines in bingo clubs has changed in recent years. The introduction and widespread use of electronic bingo terminals (EBTs) by a number of providers accounts for much of the increase in Category C and Category D machines since April 2010-March 2011. Originally introduced to the market as Category D machines, the evidence suggests that a number of the handheld bingo terminals now operate with Category C content. In the period October 2012-September 2013, the number of gaming
machines in bingo licensed premises accounted for 29 per cent (12 per cent in April 2009-March 2010) of the total number of machines across all gambling sectors. Gaming machine GGY in bingo licensed premises accounted for 12 per cent (11 per cent in April 2009-March 2010) of gaming machine GGY across all sectors. The increases in GGY for Category B3 and C machines is in part due to a number of operators putting in place better systems to record GGY by category of machine, having previously recorded this detail as a total of GGY for all machines on site, and captured as ‘aggregated categories’.

usinesses at coin-op stronghold Skegness B have suffered flood damage following heavy rain. Flash floods in Skegness affected hotels, a bingo hall, shops and homes after rain fell at about 1pm on June 24. One eyewitness said the seafront looked ‘like a river’ during the heavy rain in the afternoon. Lincolnshire County Council said there was only ‘minor damage’, but
fire crews had to be called to pump out water from properties. Brenda Hunter, manager of the Grosvenor Hotel in the town’s North Parade, told local press: “I had a panicked phone
call from staff members saying we were flooding downstairs. There was about 2in in our ladies’ toilets, it had come in through the wall.” Hunter added that the hotel’s wooden parquet ballroom floor was still soaking wet and might need to be replaced. She said: “We’re coming into (our) busy season so if we starting pulling stuff up now we’re going to lose business. I’ve never seen anything like that.” Skegness Town coun-
cillor Sue Binch said she saw some of the damage caused by the heavy rain. She stated: “Somebody showed me some pictures of the seafront and it was just like a river.” Binch saw a bingo hall in North Parade where flood water had come through the back door and soaked half the carpet. A Met Office spokeswoman said it was likely the flash flooding was caused by intense downpours of about 30mm of rain an hour.

Photo booth specialist Photo-Me has announced strong profit growth, a confident outlook and dividends up by 25 per cent in its latest annual results. hoto-Me International plc, the instant service equipment group, has announced its results for the year to 30 April 2014. Among the highlights are EBITDA up by 6.4 per cent from £44.9m to £47.8m and pre-tax profits of £30.1m from £24.3m - a 23.8 per cent increase. John Lewis, the company’s non-executive chairman, said: “It has been another excellent year for the Group and an
P
important one in terms of our future development. Our operations division grew revenue by 1.5 per cent and operating profits by 12.6 per cent and considerable progress was made in our laundry product Revolution, where we successfully relocated manufacturing to Hungary and where the average takings on the units deployed fully justify our confidence in this product for the future.” He added: “Sales and
servicing revenue declined substantially as we expected but lower costs plus profits of £1.3m from sales of Revolution units meant a return to healthy profits. Going forward, because of the much smaller size of sales and servicing and its effective absorption into the operations in France, we will no longer be reporting it separately and the Group will report purely along geographic lines.” Cash generation
RESORTS
remained strong for Photo-Me and the group further increased its net cash balance to £63.1m. Lewis concluded: “Photo booth numbers rose by a healthy 5.1 per cent over the year and we expect to be able to continue to expand this estate which is benefiting from the introduction of the Starck booths and the relocation of production to China. The manufacturing capacity for Revolution is steadily increasing
in line with our plans and excellent returns are being generated. We remain on track to have 2,000 units in the field by the end of December 2015. Thus the group’s two core products are both in excellent shape and well positioned for further growth. Subject to the risks and uncertainties detailed in the business and financial review, the Board anticipates further significant progress over the coming year.”

Now in its fourth year, the 2014 Barry Island Alcohol Prevention Poster competition encouraged local children to send out a message to anyone thinking of drinking on the beach. To encourage entries, Barry Island Promenade Amusements donated a Smuggler’s Cove golf game and ice-cream and Barry Island Pleasure Park gave £25 in tokens for the first prize. The winner, local primary school pupil Georgia Jones, will have her poster displayed at businesses in Barry Island, and at train stations to re-enforce the message that alcohol is an unwelcome visitor to the Welsh seaside resort. Run by the Barry Neighbourhood Policing Team, the competition forms part of Operation Blue Sea, which will see police crackdown on offenders by deploying extra patrols until the end of August.

Trio of operators face regulatory sanctions LICENSING
perators Future Machines,Light Gaming O and Venue Gaming have all landed themselves in hot water with the Gambling Commission in 2014. For Future Machines, the Commission decided to warn the Licensee under section 117(1)(a) of the Gambling Act 2005 (the Act) and attach a condition to the operating licence for the company which requires the licensee to conduct routine diligence checks to ensure that the gaming machines they supply are only sited on premises which are appropriately licensed. Venue Gaming Limited, meanwhile, had its licence revoked. Following a
change of control to Raminder Singh Sidhu in March 2012,Venue Gaming made an application to the Commission under section 102 (2) (b) of the Act for a determination that its operating licence should continue to have effect. Commission officials were not satisfied that the Commission would have granted the operating
licence had Sidhu been a controller at the relevant time and in December 2012 the Commission notified Venue Gaming that it was minded to revoke the licence. On 31 July 2013 the matter came before a Regulatory Panel which on 8 August 2013 issued its determination confirming the decision to refuse the continuation of the operat-
ing licence. On 2 September 2013 Venue appealed to the First Tier Tribunal (Gambling) but subsequently withdrew the appeal on 5 March 2014 whereupon the revocation of the operating licence of Venue Gaming Limited took effect. And finally,The Commission decided to issue a formal warning to Light Gaming Limited (trading as Red 9 Gaming) and to attach additional conditions to their operating licence. The reason for this being that Light Gaming failed to submit regulatory returns and was operating without suitable accounting procedures. Furthermore, Light Gaming demonstrated poor financial record keep-
ing in respect of investments received and general business arrangements. The Commission stated: “The lack of a paper trail is a serious omission and falls far short of the standard of accounting and transparency we would expect of the holder of an operating licence.” The Commission accepts, however, that Light Gaming Limited has acted to bring themselves into compliance by addressing the concerns and in the circumstances a warning and additional conditions being placed on the operating licence, requiring the licensee to notify the Commission of certain occurrences, were considered appropriate sanctions.
ing and Advertising) Act 2014 (Transitional Provisions) Order 2014 (SI) has been laid before Parliament and is subject to negative resolution. The transitional arrangements set out in the SI enable operators who are currently able to provide facilities for gambling in Great Britain (because they hold a licence in an EEA or white listed jurisdiction) to continue to do so if their advance application for a Gambling Commission licence or licence variation has not been determined by 1 October 2014. Operators who meet this requirement must have submitted an advance application with the relevant application fee by midnight on 16 September 2014 to be eligible for a continuation licence. If the application has not been determined by 1 October 2014, the applicant will be issued with a continuation licence that will enable them to continue to operate until completion of the application process. Licence applications must be made through the online application service on the Commission’s website.

Spanish City to be restored to former glory - but will there be room for amusements? RESTORATION

Details of the restoration plan for Spanish City have been backed by North Tyneside councillors and will return the listed building to how it looked when it opened in 1910. The plans represent a significant step towards the conclusion of the saga which has surrounded the future of the Dome and will see the reinstatement of previ-

A marketing brochure for the building to attract potential users is due out this week. This follows approval for proposed uses, which include community and/or leisure uses on the ground and first floors and retail units and cafe on the promenade level. A conservation plan for Spanish City by the North of England Civic Trust says the complex has “high architectural significance” as a high quality piece of Edwar-

When opened in 1910, Spanish City was a collection of seaside pleasure buildings and grounds, including a theatre, shops, leisure and amusement and ride attractions. It is estimated that the scheme could attract around 150,000 extra visitors to Whitley Bay seafront each year and bring £3m into the local economy.

New rules to make school holidays easier for tourism workers
REGENERATION
esorts including Paignton and Torbay could be set to R benefit after tourism projects in
The problem of when to take school holidays for operators and staff at amusement attractions could soon be solved thanks to a new government bill.
T
schools choose to change their holiday dates, following discussion locally with parents and local businesses, there may well be a positive impact on seaside economies. “In areas of high-seasonal employment, for example, small variations to term-dates agreed locally may help parents to holiday outside of peak periods.” The new rules are part of the Deregulation Bill, which has been passed by the House of Commons and is currently being scrutinised in the House of Lords. The government said it
wanted to enable communication between local councils and schools to ensure widely different term dates are not set across neighbouring areas. It has identified a particular problem in areas that have high levels of employment in the tourism sector. Last year a third of primary school children in Cornwall went absent for a term-time holiday, compared to the national average of 20 per cent. Parents that work in tourism jobs are thought to be too busy to be able to take time off during normal school holidays, so choose
to take their children out of classes at other times of the year. Truss added: “The government is giving more schools greater flexibility to adapt the shape of the school year in the interests of their pupils’ education. “Whilst this will extend an existing flexibility to a greater number of schools, our advice will continue to include a clear expectation of schools working with each other and the local authority to coordinate dates to avoid unnecessary disruption to parents and their employers.” A Department for Edu-
cation spokesman told the Daily Mail:“We recognise the challenges facing parents to fit holidays around their jobs and that’s why we are giving all schools the flexibility to set their own term times so they can change term dates to ones that work for their pupils and families. “The most recent fullyear figures show we are making progress, with 130,000 fewer pupils regularly missing school under this government. We have also increased fines for truancy and encouraged schools to address the problem earlier.”

In March news emerged that the pier had been sold to a new consortium, but Fred Nash said nothing had been finalised and blamed Portsmouth City Council for holding up any sale. It wants to tackle the number of term time absences, which can be up to 50 per cent higher in traditional tourism hotspot. Ministers said the rules, which should come into force later this year and give schools greater freedom in setting term dates, could benefit seaside resorts. and just think about the road out of it. I don’t want to come to Portsmouth any more. “Portsmouth City Council has given us no help, and the issue is the prospective new owners can’t get any reasonable discussions out of the council about what is going on.” The South Parade Trust has warned that if the stalemate isn’t broken and repairs aren’t carried out the pier is in danger of collapsing into the sea. It has launched an online petition through online campaign site 38 Degrees that calls on the
council to order Nash and fellow owner Dawn Randall to carry out the repairs and prevent any further damage to the Grade IIlisted pier. Leon Reis, chairman of The South Parade Trust, said: “Fred Nash has never changed his tune, he hasn’t spent any money on the pier since they bought it in 2010. “I have been saying consistently since 2010 that unless money is spent on the pier, it will fall down, and there will be a £4m bill for demolition, or a blighted seafront.”
South Devon were awarded a share of £450,000 by the government’s Coastal Communities Fund. As a result of the grant, around 441 full time jobs could be saved, and up to 38 direct full time jobs and 52 part time jobs created. The additional money will also help 100 businesses to innovate, reduce costs, develop supply chain networks and secure future employment in the region’s shellfish and tourism industries. The funding follows the £1.4m Torbay received from the Coastal Communities Fund last year to help support job creation. A spokesperson for South Hams District Council said:“This is welcome news to our coastal communities and will deliver a major boost to the region’s fishing and tourism industries. “The project will retain and create jobs and apprenticeship schemes as well as supporting local businesses and innovators. These exciting plans will assist the region’s economy for years to come.” The Coastal Communities Fund aims to encourage the economic development of coastal communities by awarding funding to create sustainable economic growth and jobs. Since its launch in 2012 it has awarded grants to 104 organisations across the UK to the value of £53.6m.This funding is forecast to deliver 7,655 jobs and help attract around £90m of additional funds to coastal areas.

Coin pushers: a prize attraction The addition of prizes to the enduringly popular field of coin pushers has helped establish this class of machines as one of the most exciting prospects in the amusement and leisure industry. Alan Potter of Whitehouse Leisure explains.

Essential Guide to Cranes & Prizes Next Week Coinslot JULY 4 - JULY 10, 2014
oin pushers have long been one of the most popular attractions in amusement arcades around the country, with kids and adults alike delighting in risking their pennies for the chance to win big. However, their historical pedigree does not mean that these games are unresponsive to innovation. As machines and operators look at ways to shake things up, the addition of prizes has provided a boost to this already burgeoning sector. “Adding prizes to the pusher machines is basically an extension of the redemption area,” explains senior buyer for Whitehouse Leisure,Alan Potter.“Customers can play and win small prizes, such as key chains or resins, or if they win enough of the smaller prizes these can be exchanged for the larger prizes that normally are on display in the pusher. The main advantage is that the customer keeps playing the machine for a longer time trying to win the prizes on offer - they rarely walk away with coins anymore.” These additions help increase dwell time and drive players to fire more coins in the machine.
C
Whitehouse carefully selects prizes that are the most suitable for pushers, utilising both licensed products and perennially popular toys and keychains.“Small prizes for the actual beds, such as collectable resin figurines, keychains and jewellery are the most suitable for coin pushers,” said Potter. “Our most popular items at the moment are our collection of Despicable Me 2 keychains and stationery products, as well as the Disney resin figures, but other generic items such as pool ball and dice keychains have been popular for many years.” Even in 2014, the status of pushers is unassailed.“Pushers have been the mainstay of arcades for many years and without them the industry would not be the same,” said Potter. “When other machines and new innovations have come and gone the faithful pusher is always there.” However, Potter believes that operators have the power to boost pusher fortunes even further. “Manufacturers have been ‘theming’ their pushers with better graphics, lighting and music which has certainly helped make the pushers more attractive,” he said.
“But it is the operator who makes the real difference as they need to be operated correctly with the right merchandise - you can really see a difference if a machine has the right product in it or not.” It’s not only the addition of prizes that has seen pushers performing well in recent years, manufacturers have taken the time to bring new ideas into machine design that have benefitted their performance in the field. “Pusher manufacturers have made a number of improvements over the years all of which have benefitted them,” noted Potter.“Other than the obvious design and lighting improvements, they have added faster coin slots, made the winning chutes much bigger to the let the prizes come out much easier and created larger areas within the pusher to display additional product. The area above a pusher is normal quite a ‘dead’ area and some manufacturers have started to use this space for display cabinets and TV displays showing other attractions within the amusement centre.”

Essential Guide to ... Coin Pushers Sector Overview SWOT ANALYSIS While modernity, gadgetry and the latest in high-tech equipment underpin most operations worth their salt these days, the country’s leading amusement arcades inevitably feature a dozen or more pushers, proving without doubt that no modern FEC can do without coin-op’s most imposing and frill-free products.
Pushers offer more than meets the eye rom a customer perspective, there are several obvious attractions of playing pushers. They are generally considered fun and simple to play.Furthermore, they are the type of machine the whole family can play together, at a small cost. From an operator’s perspective, meanwhile, they provide reliable and steady revenue. They are usually easy to maintain. And more importantly they attract the casual gamer who might not spend money on other, more complex, machines. A quality of pushers which is often overlooked is their versatility. Nowadays pushers come in several different shapes and sizes, including hexagonal units and rectangular eight-players designed to be positioned in the centre of the arcade floor through to single-player pushers which can be placed against the wall. The fact that pushers now come in so many formats naturally means that they are also available at plenty of different price points. Coin pushers are the lifeblood of the coastal amusement arcade and, to some extent, inland FECs, and have provided entertainment for generations of families, while creating a profitable revenue stream for all links of the coin-op supply chain.
F
Coinslot JULY 4 - JULY 10, 2014
While things have changed somewhat since pushers’ formative days in the 1960s, the way they play and are operated remains pretty similar. While a noticeable shift towards redemption has occurred in recent years, the simplicity of entering a coin and watching how its journey affects the rest of the coins behind the glass retains its fascination for all generations. While other segments of coin-op obsess over innovation, technology and brand awareness, the pusher sector has remained largely unchanged for decades certainly in terms of the end user’s experience. The phrase ‘Why fix it when it’s not broken’ could have been invented specifically for pushers. On one hand, noone is going to become a millionaire on the proceeds of their 2p pusher takings, but on the other which other coin-op sector could legitimately claim to consistently attract the time, attention and money of the whole family demographic for decade after decade? Behind the simplistic facade, however, are a host of new features which have emerged in the last few years, such as coin flipping, fast feeds, interactive videobased features, closed loop systems and, of course, instant ticket and prize payout.
A new pusher is an expensive piece of equipment, as everyone involved will testify, but its appeal is timeless. If they’re looked after, pushers last many years, and provide a steady ROI to operators with an eye on the long game. If a child is given a five pound note rather than a tenner to spend, the obvious way of making that money go further is to change it into two pence pieces and play the pushers, rather than have to shove a pound coin into a video game, air hockey or pool table for example. Even if 2p and 10p coins went out of circulation, it seems that the coin pusher will continue to be a fixture in FECs, bowling alleys and cineplexes up and down the country as the de-commissioned coins would simply be used as tokens. The cream of the UK’s pusher manufacturers and distributors as featured in the coming pages have consistently delivered the goods since pushers first emerged in 1963 and that heritage, expertise, creativity and determination should see the sector survive and thrive for plenty of years to come. The bottom line is, like it or not, without pushers, it is unlikely that some of the UK’s seaside FECs could not operate viably.
SWOT ANALYSIS PUSHERS STRENGTHS • Little maintenance is required • Very easy to update in terms of branding, gifts and coins within • Steady earners WEAKNESSES • A maximum coin-in of 2p or 10p will never be enough to retire on • Time consuming and costly cash handling issues OPPORTUNITIES • Latest modular designs allow for experimentation and expansion • Gifts, swag and ticket bundles can be added to reinvigorate machine • Thriving second hand market because of machine longevity THREATS • Gradual move towards ‘cashless society’ • Arcade and FEC closures

Essential Guide to ... Coin Pushers Market Perspectives REDEMPTION
VIEWPOINT
The building blocks of a great pusher
When push comes to shove
Harry Levy’s Chris Clifton breaks down the elements of a successful pusher and looks ahead to a future filled with redemption. any people, including those in the industry, fondly recollect hours spent on coin pushers during their younger years.“I think there is a lot more in terms of an experience from playing a coin pusher than simply the gameplay,” said Harry Levy’s Chris Clifton. “Coin pushers reflected a fond part of my childhood memory; they represented family outings, going to the beach, and trying to get that big stack of coins to fall down the coin shoot. I feel the whole experience of playing a coin pusher, no matter your age, can’t be matched by more modernised machines and that’s why I feel they are still popular.” What attracted kids and adults to pushers in years gone by was most often its eye-catching appearance. That attract factor remains vitally important today, explains Clifton:“Inevitably looks play a big part in the success of a pusher and is probably the biggest contributing factor. Trying to make a machine different so it feels unique is also quite a large part of making a successful pusher.” Game designers can use an array of tools to make their machines more appealing, including animated top signs, multi-coloured LEDs and much more besides.“We feel quality is a major contributor,” added Clifton.“Making sure our pushers are made to the highest standards ensures we get repeat orders.” Operators also tend to find that, in spite of inflation, traditional low-value currency games are still the overall favourite. “Whilst we have experimented with various currency denominations in many sites, we have found that the tried and tested classic 2p play is by far the most popular and rewarding,” said Clifton. “Not only are 2 pence pushers more recognisa ble and popular, they allow the player a lot of time on the machine to truly enjoy themselves. That’s not to say 10 pence pushers don’t work; we just find they do better in more suited

or specific sites, such as bowling alleys.” Placing multiplayer machines in a venue, rather than just a freestanding pusher, is also a surefire way to increase revenue.“The typical family or group of friends would want to play a coin pusher together as and this is where multiplayer coin pushers are great,”said Clifton.“Technically, it allows us to add things like shared features, extravagant top signs and is a lot more cost effective in general.” As the landscape of arcades continues to evolve, Harry Levy are working to ensure that pushers are not left behind. The growth of redemption in recent years has made the idea of a pusher that dispenses tickets an attractive proposition for many operators. “More recently we have implemented ticket on feature to a lot of our pushers, with great success,” said Clifton.“This not only enables the player to play for money from the machine, but also to work towards a prize; a great incentive we find. It also enables us to be extremely creative with the features on our machines and add another level of gameplay to the classic pusher concept.”
Besides being the quintessential seaside arcade piece, dominating more floor space than most, the pusher serves as a literal test bed for swag while virtually guaranteeing a long term, hassle free return on investment.
alex lee foreword nce your average visitor to a seaside arcade is through the door it’s the pusher that dominates the space and attracts O punters like fluff to belly buttons. In other words, the pusher provides the familiarity and ambience of the seaside arcade floor. Technology-wise, the pusher has of course evolved big time, with video footage, fast coin feed, multiplier features and so on, but it has done so while keeping its core appeal. The idea of pushing a coin in and watching its erratic journey onto the ever-moving beds stays as simple and uncomplicated as it always did. How many forms of coin-op entertainment can legitimately claim to have lived through the process of decimalisation? This survival has been helped, big time, by the 2p coin, which would largely lurk down the back of the settee, in giant cider bottles or in buskers’ guitar cases were it not for pushers. How a product that recycles vast amounts of dirty old copper coinage can be as popular now as it was four decades ago is anyone’s guess. Whisper this, but even the 10p pusher looks like it is finally becoming a standard FEC piece too - as is the coin and ticket-out pusher. The outstanding attraction of the pusher, however, is the ritualistic behaviour it encourages. People of all ages will happily feed the pushers with a view to bagging that swag prize positioned tantalisingly on the end of the pusher bed until their coins run out. With greater percentages of pushers being ticket-out nowadays, their importance to a seaside operator’s bottom line is perhaps just as vital as it ever was. In summary, one could easily remove a video game, novelty piece or prize vendor from a coastal arcade and it would still be seen as a coastal arcade. To a large extent, you could perform a similar experiment with many of the gaming and amusement machines in contemporary operations and the arcade would remain eminently recognisable for what it is. If you made the bold move, however, of removing all pushers from the seaside operation equation, you could virtually guarantee that the arcade would become just another seaside building in need of a lick of paint. It will be recognisable by its location, facade and lighting, but that’s where the similarity to a busy seaside arcade would end. Pulling the pusher from a FEC would be like removing the make-up from Kiss - unthinkable and slightly grotesque. But let’s give credit where it’s due. The pusher has survived the test of time - and all the major distributors will testify to the robust nature of UK-manufactured models.

Essential Guide to ... Coin Pushers Market Perspectives LICENSING
INNOVATION
Branded pushers popularity waning With branded machines having been the vogue for pushers for decades, the time has come to move away from licences and towards redemption, says Jingle Games’ Mike Ansell. ushers have long been a profitable component of amusement arcades, encouraging manufactures to try a variety of new approaches to making them even more successful. Along with these new ideas came machines that were heavily branded, featuring successful movie and gaming licenses from the recent past or well known characters from the history of music and cinema. “I’ve been involved in the business for 40 years and I spent 10 years alongside Harry Levy, developing games,” says Mike Ansell of both Jingle Games and Lordsvale. “Lordsvale were probably one of the first companies, if not the first, to have branded pushers.” Mike was key in bringing the Bar X branded pushers to market with Harry Levy, based on the successful Electrocoin fruit machines.“It was very successful in the UK,” he said.“From what I can remember, Bar X was probably the first pusher to have fruit machine reels.” Amongst others, Ansell has produced games featuring the likenesses of Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe. “About 15 years ago we came out with one of the first branded pushers, which was Car Wash, based on the 70s disco movie,” he said.“It was very very successful for us and that led us on to doing a whole range of pushers, all manufactured by Harry Levy. Every

year we came out with a new 8-player, 6player or 10-player.” In 2014, however, although pushers remain a profitable enterprise, Ansell is lukewarm on the benefits of investing in a branded license. “Having a brand on a pusher, I don’t think it significantly increases the income,” he said. “We had Marilyn Monroe license for a couple of years and it didn’t do anything special. Marilyn Monroe is an iconic brand when you’re selling posters and T-Shirts, but it didn’t really work for us on a pusher.” These days, it’s all about redemption, with Jingle offering a special kit that can add ticket vending to a number of wellknow pushers.“I honestly think that it’s come full circle and adding redemption to the pushers is a big plus for those operators who have invested in redemption,” said Ansell. With redemption in place,it then comes down to how well the operator positions the machine in his or her arcade. “The pushers have a very important place, because they give value for money,” said Ansell.“Families will go in there and have a certain amount of money to spend, they’ll cash it all into 2ps and spend it on the pushers. The success of a pusher is down to the operator and how he presents that pusher with the merchandise that can be won.”
Augmenting the classics An influx of modern ideas is helping to transform the already popular coin pusher genre into a hotbed of innovation. he longterm success of coin pushers has embedded them in the British consciousness as a must-have element of the summer Tgetaway. “Coin pushers go hand in hand with a trip to the seaside and although they are successful in other locations, the association is generally with being on holiday and in this environment,” said JNC finance director, John Jennings. “The simple format and the visibility of the money on the beds, means that these games are very tempting, and great fun, for people in the arcades.” That does not mean, however, that these are relics, rehashing the same experience over and over. Modern innovations have been steadily creeping into pusher design, with redemption and prizes two of the most prominent influences. “The most successful feature of a coin pusher, of late, has been the addition of ticket payout, as well as the usual coin payout, when the bonus is won,” said Jennings. “This capitalised on the growth of redemption areas which now make up a significant part of most arcades. The ticket payout creates a buzz around the pusher, which attracts further players to the machine. This has added a further dimension to the game as it means that people can play the pusher for coins, for toys (on the bed), for tickets or for a combination of all three.” These advances are joined by innovations that make coin pushers more accessible and more exciting. “Even pushers have moved with the times,” noted Jennings, “and most recently the very successful machines are the low coin entry ones with fast feeds as these appeal to a wider range of players. The most recent feature, which has been hugely successful on the Clockwork Oranges, is the accumulating jackpot ticket payout, which pays out on a particular bed after a specific amount of time. This attracts players to the machine and more importantly keeps people coming back for more.” All in all, these new ideas are combining to make the games even more appealing. “Coin pushers attract players of all ages and are great games for the whole family to play together. With inviting toys positioned on the beds, as well as the coins, kids (and kids at heart) find the pushers irresistible.”

Licensed product has become an increasingly important part of the offering, with many well-known household brands forming part of the range - all of which have performed beyond expectation explains Alan Potter, senior buyer at Whitehouse: “Initially we developed a number of new licensed resin designs centred around the most popular Disney brands, such as Winnie the Pooh and Friends and Mickey and Minnie Mouse.Their collectability has proved to be a real success and we are already underway with development of other Disney brands such as Monsters Inc,
Toy Story and Doc McStuffins, which are set to launch during 2015.” Larger value products are becoming a significant feature on coin pushers and operators have seen the opportunity to gain additional sales through trade-ups – displaying larger value items on the pusher display shelves, which can be redeemed for smaller prizes at the redemption centre. One example is the Despicable Me 2 keychain range, which can be traded up for other Despicable Me 2 products such as plush, mugs and stationery items, which are proving to be extremely popular.

JINGLE GAMES
Pushers’ redemption With an increasing number of operators turning to redemption to boost profits, Jingle Games is offering a cost effective way of bringing a site’s existing pushers into the fold. n arcades around the country, both pushers and redemption machines are out performing the games that sit alongside them. In an effort to unify these two star genres, Jingle Games has devised a cost-effective kit, which can be applied to a number of popular pushers to convert them into ticket-vending redemption machines. This allows operators to bring their coin pushers in line with the rest of their arcade, increasing the likelihood that patrons will spend time on the machines. “[Adding redemption to pushers] has been a big boost to the operators that have decided to invest in redemption, said Jingle Games’ Mike Ansell.“Pushers have always been the main cash earners in an arcade. Both pushers and redemption are usually at the front end of the arcade. Jingle Games offers a kit that features Strictly Rock n’ Roll imagery which can be fitted to a range of existing games. The Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe pushers from Lordsvale can be upgraded, as can the
I
Harry Levy Magic 7 machine. With Jingle’s kit applied, the machine still features a cash payout, but also vends tickets at configurable intervals. This keeps the games within the 5 percent tax bracket for Machine Games Duty. “We launched it at the show in London this year, explained Ansell.“It’s been very successful as a kit or a rebuild for those three machines. It enhances the income by making it into a cash and redemption machine, rather than just a cash only machine. It’s a very cost effective way of
changing your pushers to redemption. With the kit applied, operators can configure their new machines to dispenses tickets at variable speeds and reward different activities.“It’s percentage based, like a fruit machine, but it’s operator adjustable depending on how generous they want to be, said Ansell.“You can’t really control the amount of coins that come over the edge. You can divert you coins the way that you want to create build up on your pusher or you can divert the coins into the cash box, but you can’t really control what percentage what comes off the edge. The Strictly Rock n’ Roll kits gives pusher operators some payout control, by monitoring how many tickets are dispensed over the course of a single play. “You can actually change the percentage of how generous you want to be by adding redemption into the game, said Ansell. “You can give mercy tickets when a coin is inserted into the machines and you can program how many tickets you give out on a win.

A pair of new pushers from Harry Levy are taking pride of place among Crown Direct and Deith Leisure’s 2014 amusement offering. rown Direct and Deith Leisure pride themselves on delivering only the best products to their customers. In the pusher C market this is evidenced by the two machine offering for 2014, with the eight-player straight Sweet Falls and the six-player round Merry Go Round machines. Both games are manufactured exclusively for Crown and Deith by Harry Levy Amusements. Sweet Falls was tested at the end of 2013 and launched at EAG 2014. Using the successful formula of previous models, Rainbow Riches and Rock N Reels, this pusher combines a redemption ticket feature delivered by three reels at every play position. “Performance on Sweet Falls has been phenomenal explained David Hurst, sales executive at Crown Direct, “even to the extent where we have had some customers buy a second machine for the same location and site them next to each other. In effect making a 16 position Sweet Falls. The income has been fantastic and this pusher will without doubt be selling in 2015 given its universal appeal and theming. EAG 2014 also saw Crown and Deith preview the new Merry Go Round pusher. Using the theme of a fairground carousel, this six position round pusher went to test in March of this year. Following feedback from some customers, modifications were Coinslot JULY 4 - JULY 10, 2014
made and production started in May 2014. Hurst again commented: “Merry Go Round is the first six-player round pusher we have put into the marketplace. Again combining the proven ticket feature of our other pushers, the wider deck than the usual eight player round gives the operator more space to work with in offering some higher value merchandise as prizes. This has really been a game we have worked at and the end result is fantastic with steady orders coming in all the time.

B2B Change Machines unch Taverns, one of the UK’s largest leased pub companies, said like-for-like net income from its estate was up 1.4 per cent in the third quarter to June 2014. The group, which has a portfolio of over 4,000 pubs across the UK, said it was on track to meet full year profit expectations. The group, which runs community, high street and so-called ‘destination’ pubs, is understood to be on the brink of a £2.3bn restructuring deal after it reached an agreement with its biggest group of bondholders. A deal has been reached between Punch and a special committee set up by the Association of British Insurers, meaning that the group has nearly enough support to go ahead with a restructuring. man of Punch Taverns, said: “We continue to make progress toward a consensual restructuring. These proposals have a high level of support, which reflects the hard work of a large number of stakeholders. “There are still hurdles to be overcome before reaching complete agreement but we view the current situation as very positive and that a successful restructuring can be implemented. Continued constructive dialogue and determination from all involved will be required to achieve this.” Under the group’s proposal, the restructuring will be launched by August 11. Punch said that it expects to generate about £100m in net proceeds from the sale of pubs over the year and a reduction in total net debt of £600m. Coinslot JULY 4 - JULY 10, 2014

Lola’s Underground Casino is purportedly the first venue in the UK to offer entertainment and gambling side by side. “Since we opened two years ago there has been an incremental rise in the number of visitors of 32,000 a week, demonstrating the potential demand there is for the new style of UK casino we offer here in London, said Hippodrome owner, Simon Thomas. “To accommodate future growth we wanted to be well prepared and open a casino that echoes what Vegas does brilliantly - putting the entertainment on the same floor as the gambling, much closer to the tables.

Comment Coin-op’s slow road to recovery
alex lee comment aving seen the latest Gambling Commission facts and figures, published in the body’s most recent Industry Statistics document, some of which are highlighted on this week’s front page, I firmly believe that the UK coinop industry has turned a corner. Admittedly, it would be impossible to put a positive spin on all the figures published, which identify certain areas of the sector that have further contracted. There are definitely plenty of reasons to be upbeat about the prospects for amusements and soft gambling, however, many of which are supplementary to what is down in black and white in the above mentioned tome. The double dip recession is over, for example, and analysts are reporting cases of ‘increased consumer confidence’ on the high street. Meanwhile, on the coast, millions of pounds continue to be pumped into regeneration of seaside resorts up and the staycation trend doesn’t look like tailing off any time soon. Elsewhere, the bingo sector is already showing a number of signs of recovery in the wake of the duty cut from 20 per cent to 10
H
per cent in the Budget. Every trade show which has been hosted thus far this year has shown good attendance and buying levels and of course a new one looms this autumn. Whether England’s ignominious, but not altogether unpredictable, departure from the World Cup will have any effect on cashbox returns, particularly in pubs, won’t be known for a short while, but overall things are looking slightly brighter for coinop as a whole. Everyone has long since manned up and admitted things will never be the same since the halcyon days of a quarter of a century ago or more and there seems to be a greater willingness to share information and ideas, as evidenced by the recent Park Avenue Open Day. While the long-term future of UK coin-op is tough to predict with apps, consoles and the much-reported uneven B2 playing field combining to keep the pressure on, those still active in the industry look like they’re standing on firmer ground than when the Gambling Act and the Smoke Ban first combined to give us all a rather unpleasant one-two across the chops.

Piers remain resolute under pr
The UK’s piers have had a roug while a bingo worker celebrate ing casinos according to the lates
alex lee media watch he Independent’s Christopher Beanland has taken a Tnostalgic look at UK piers as Ryde’s pier celebrates its 200th anniversary. If piers were about the Victorians demonstrating that they could conquer the elements, the end result never looked quite as thrusting and dominant as it was supposed to. The gaps between the boards, the skimpy ironwork, the knowledge that so many piers have burnt down, all combine to give a sense of impermanence. Which makes it all the more remarkable that the British seaside pier celebrates its 200th birthday this summer, and that 58 of them remain standing in Britain. The first pier opened at Ryde on the Isle of Wight in July 1814. Throughout the 1800s, dozens more followed. Southend’s first pier shot up in 1830 - and the current muchextended incarnation is the
longest in the world. Piers are part of the iconography of the British seaside holiday. In L’Angleterre de Martin Amis, a documentary made for French broadcaster Arte and shown earlier this year on BBC4, Amis meditated on the way the English grimly endure holidays at home. He reckoned we practise Schadenfreude on ourselves, that we derive a weird joy from the rain and the cold; from the seaside suffering and the pier-based boredom. Piers are often called “pleasure piers”, but the pleasures derived from them, especially out of season, can be dubious: arcades, funfairs, ribald postcards and candyfloss. I remember spilling my orange juice on the way to Blackpool’s Central Pier, and being amazed by the lifeboat station and its precipitous rollercoaster ramp at the end of Cromer Pier. Penarth Pier re-opened in
December following a £4.2m restoration; Southwold Pier has a new owner (and will flaunt a boutique hotel if its plans come to fruition). The most encouraging pier restoration of all is just along the coast from Eastbourne at Hastings. When it opens next year, Hastings Pier might become the main reason people go to visit the town. It won’t be a pier trapped in a time warp - it’ll provide real, tangible, modern pleasures. In a way, Brighton’s Palace Pier provides those pleasures, too. Brighton bursts with vitality; it’s the least depressing of Britain’s south-coast seaside towns. The Palace Pier is a reminder of how exciting the concept of a pier must have seemed to our sheltered forbears who didn’t go to summer festivals in Croatia or enjoy gap years in South-east Asia. Of course, Brighton is also home to the saddest pier wreck. Lorded over by the

“I have a journalist’s healthy dislike of PR people. Anyone outside the publishing industry might think that a journalist and a PR person do pretty much the same thing, at least in the trade press - promoting products. In fact there is often an insurmountable gulf of mistrust between the two.”

“As a video games designer and father of three I have an inherent interest in the perceived effects that playing video games can have on my kids. Public interest, and therefore much of the research done in this area, tends to focus on the effects of playing violent video games; on whether one can spend too much time on screens or the idea that playing certain types of games can improve motor skills and brain function. My interest, however, has been in how the video games they love to play are being translated into both their physical play and the way in which they communicate.” PETE LOW, HUFFINGTON POST
“One of the Southport Arts Festival’s key Chapel Street events will be on the weekend of August 23 and 24, when leading cartoonists from publications, such as Punch and Private Eye, will be drawing cartoons on large boards right in the centre of the street. This event will also include musicians and an extraordinary ‘live’ Punch & Judy show. This whole cartoon event will have a seaside theme to fit in with Southport’s resort status.”

uncompromising brutalist bulk of the Holiday Inn, the skeleton of the much older West Pier is intensely morbid, especially during a Brighton spring sunset. The whole scene here is set to get much, much stranger in summer 2016, because Brighton has plans to build a 600ft-high viewing tower at the exact point that the West Pier used to lurch out into the sea. Further afield, Japan’s ruling party will seek to pass a law to legalize casinos in the next session of parliament in autumn, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told Bloomberg in an interview. Japan’s Diet began debate of the bill last week, after weeks of delays, not leaving enough time to pass before the end of the most recent session of parliament on June 22. The delays have left question marks over the timetable for legalizing casinos in a market that may be worth as
much as $40bn a year, according to estimates from CLSA. The world’s biggest casino operators have been lining up to bid for licenses, with both MGM Resorts and Las Vegas Sands saying they may be prepared to invest as much as $10 billion to build a resort in the country. And finally, Paul Harrison, the 63-year-old general manager at Mecca Bingo in St Helens has lived and breathed bingo for the past 40 years, according to the St Helens Star. He has worked throughout the country, from Bournemouth to Blackpool, and even stepped into the caller’s role to keep 200 players happy during a four day QE2 voyage to New York.
He was Mecca’s manager of the year in 1996, opened two clubs in Blackpool and chaperoned Mecca customers in Bermuda. Mecca area manager Mike Sime acknowledged Paul’s long term commitment: “It’s amazing for anyone to work at the same company for 40 years. To be able to have someone with his wealth of knowledge and experience as part of the team is fantastic.” Manchester born Paul has no plans to retire just yet. “It’s different every day, whether you’re working with staff or customers. I love the personable and social side of the business,” said the father-of-four. “As long as you enjoy it, you stay in it.”
he latest Federation of Small Businesses’ Small Business TIndex shows a growing skills shortage in the workplace. Now identified as a significant barrier to growth for small firms, almost one third (29.9 per cent) of those surveyed report skills shortages as hampering growth, with construction and computer services particularly hard hit. To address this increasingly significant issue facing the UK labour market, the FSB wants to see a number of steps taken: The business and education community must work more closely together to ensure young people are ‘work ready’ and understand the demands of the world of work. Employability skills must be embedded from an early age; the labour market has changed dramatically in recent years and businesses are adapting to that change but the education system needs to catch up. Reforms must be completed to create a business-led, high quality apprenticeship system that provides a real choice between vocational and academic routes. This should be for the long term, and aspire to match standards of our leading competitors such as Germany. Traineeships must be used as a credible alternative to a formal apprenticeship. Initiatives such as the TechBac, 14-19 college programmes and the rejuvenation of University Technical Colleges serve to demonstrate that a vocational education is no longer considered the second tier of the UK education system. Despite the challenges around skills, the survey of almost 2,500 businesses shows confidence at a record high with year-on-year gains seen across the whole of the UK, led again
by London and the South East. Confidence remains weaker in other parts of the UK such as the North West. Professional services and technology continue to display the strongest optimism, with significantly good news around the manufacturing sector. The report shows investment intentions remain strong. FSB believes business investment helps to boost productivity, which in turn feeds through into higher wages and living standards. Key findings show: • The Small Business Index rose to 39.7, breaking the previous score of 35.7 in Q1 2014 • Nearly three in 10 small companies (29.9 per cent) report skills shortages as a barrier to growth, up from 25.4 per cent in Q1 2014 • Investment intentions remain strong. This quarter a net balance of more than one in four firms (25.6 per cent) expects to increase capital investment over the next 12 months As the labour market continues to tighten alongside the economic recovery, skills shortages will continue to be an increasing concern for more businesses. While this helps to boost the wage bargaining power of workers with the right skills, it poses a risk to the momentum of economic growth and once again underlines a long standing structural weakness in the UK economy. Despite the emergence of a skills shortage, these results show small firms are still feeling very confident, with every intention to invest and grow. This will provide further momentum to the recovery, especially in terms of jobs growth.
