cassette for £199. Reflecting on the breakthrough initiative for the industry, Project managing director Tony Boulton said: “First of all, a lot of credit has to be paid to the Gambling Business Group for succeeding where so many before them were unable to and that’s in developing and agreeing a common protocol. This has been a long and complex process which has required both patience and determination. Wherever TITO has been introduced on the global gaming stage it has been a resounding success and in 2015 I believe the majority of industry wide B3 sales will be on TITO with adult gaming centres fully going over to ticket in ticket out
through the course of 2015.” He added: “The benefits to both operators and players are significant. For operators we are looking at significant reductions in the level of fraud, machine downtime and reduced collection times. However, I think the biggest benefits will impact players, measured in convenience, privacy of payout, portability of winnings and generally delivering a positive, hassle-free customer experience.” Boulton summed up: “Players will be aware of TITO through exposure in LBOs and in the majority of casinos which, I believe, suggests there will be a high degree of acceptance when it’s rolled out on the UK high street.”
ham concurred: “Town and County have been operating over four decades and have always been at the forefront of innovation in coin-op in the Midlands. We have been looking for a new jukebox supplier for some time now. NSM’s Icon Lite ticks all the boxes: attractive design, great choice of music, with a wide variety of genres such as bhangra and rock. Our new deal
with Marston’s has made this deal with NSM Music even more of a win-win deal for both parties. We look forward to many more years of co-operation with our partners.” The deal marks yet another high-profile single site business venture in the jukebox sector, proving that pay-to-play music still has a massive role to play in pubs and bars across the UK.
enior Liberal Democrat John Leech MP has called on the government to go much further with their proposals to curtail fixed odds betting terminals - or FOBTs - the machines in betting shops capable of taking bets of up to £100 a spin. The controversial machines now number 34,000 in the UK and account for over half of bookmakers’ profits. John Leech, the Liberal Democrat culture spokesperson, who also serves on the influential DCMS Select committee, condemned the government’s inaction on FOBTs at his party’s conference in Glasgow, and called for an end to high stakes casino gambling on the high street. With the clear intention of defining his party’s policy on FOBTs from the Conservatives, MP for Manchester Withington Leech said: “So far we have not done enough. The measures announced in April are just not enough. There is no place for high stakes, high risk and addictive casino gambling in betting shops on the high street.” He added: “All other easily accessible machines are already capped at £2 per spin because that is what is considered a safe level, so why are betting shops allowed machines that facilitate losses of £300 a minute? It is time we dealt with this once and for all and cut the stakes on FOBTs to £2.” The FOBT debate has dominated many of the conversations BACTA chief executive John White has had lately. He told Coinslot:“Our demands (for parity across all adult-only premises) were borne of the frustration caused by the government’s failure to listen to the calls for a parity of treatment in respect of machines for adult, age-controlled, environments.” This is an argument that White will be taking to politicians and civil servants over the coming weeks in advance of the expected

The Liberal Democrats have broken ranks with coalition partners the Conservatives over FOBTs and have called for the stake to be reduced to £2 a spin. announcement by the government of the action they propose to take in respect of Cat B2 machines. Leech echoed comments by Lib Dem whip Don Foster, who at Party Conference in 2012 called for the maximum bet per spin to be capped:“For too long, this problem has been swept under the carpet. There’s no doubt this is ruining people’s lives.” The government’s key proposal is set to go before Parliament by the end of this year requiring customers who want to place bets of more than £50 a spin either request permission from staff or sign up for account-based play. White concluded:“The media debate tends to become simplisti-
cally focused on the stake and prize and not on the principle. From my perspective,it is the principle that is important and unarguable. “BACTA welcomes any measures that help high street businesses such as adult gaming centres compete on a level commercial playing field. Following years of discrimination we support calls to further address one of the factors that have impacted our members so negatively; namely the law that says that age controlled adult gaming premises such as AGCs can't operate the same machines as other age controlled adult gaming premises, for instance licensed betting offices.”

head of the inauguralAutumn Coin-Op show,Swan Events’ Karen Cooke has noted a lot of positivity permeating the coin-op industry because of the state of the UK economy. To this end, she believes next week is perfect timing for the sector’s newest trade event. Cooke told Coinslot:“Stakeholders believe that the time is right to put on a show in the autumn. There’s a need for an event in October, driven by the UK market for the UK market. We organised the Autumn Coin-Op show because several industry stakeholders, led notably by Harry Levy, specifically came to us and requested that we do so.” She added:“In many ways,we’re going back to the roots of the industry and because of this one of the criteria for exhibiting is that the firm must be UK-based or have a UK office. We aren’t marketing the show outside the UK as it is aimed squarely at the UK sector - in contrast to the EAG, which is a successful international event.” Cooke revealed that the industry stakeholders who approached Swan about the possibility of an autumn event all said the same things.“They wanted the venue to be in west London and for it to have a bar and hotel on site. We’ll be offering discounted hotel rooms and tours of Chelsea FC.” With the exhibition floor totally sold out, the opening night recenption has had to be moved to a larger venue to accommodate the number of exhibitors and visitors expected to attend. Cooke explained:“Due to an increase in expected attendance, the Networking Drinks Reception will be moved from Frankie’s to ‘Under the Bridge’. Networking will be an incredibly important aspect of ACOS and the larger venue will ensure that visitors, exhibitors and other show-goers will have more space to relax and socialise at the end of the first day.” Against a backdrop of the general public actually beginning to spend more and UK inbound tourism looking good, Cooke believes the time is right. She concluded: “The bottom line is that we would never put on events that the industry didn’t want.We always work with the industry and this will be an event that is held with that firmly in mind.”

Fans of the artist have flocked to Palace Amusements to see the piece, entitled ‘Art Buff’, which depicts a pensioner staring at an empty plinth while wearing headphones and clasping her hands behind her back. The anonymous artist confirmed the work was his via his website, banksy.co.uk, where visitors are greeted with a slideshow of the wall before and after the mural was painted.
Clear plastic sheeting has been placed over the artwork, after a number of his murals at other locations were removed by third parties and sold at auction. The local authority, Shepway District Council, said it was working with Dreamland Leisure, the owner of Palace Amusements, to ensure it remains undamaged. Dreamland Leisure is also reported to have employed security staff to oversee the artwork. Shepway councillor Jenny Hollingsbee said: “This is a tremendous opportunity for the people of Folkestone to see a Banksy original. It is another reason to be proud of Folkestone.”
Bingo hall and church agree to swap premises BINGO
Newcastle-based bingo hall in a former EdwarA dian cinema has swapped premises with a local church. Operators of Heaton Bingo on Heaton Road in Newcastle no longer required such a large building. Elim Pentecostal Church, situated on the same road, needed a new site to accommodate its growing congregation and projects like food and clothing banks. Pastor Simon Lawton (pictured), whose congregation was outgrowing its old building, told the BBC that his new home “looks big from the outside but when you actually walk round it’s like a Tardis”. The bingo hall’s owner
suggested the swap, with Elim Pentecostal paying the difference, after the church showed interest in buying the hall, according to Lawton. Some members of the congregation have been unhappy their church has been turned over to bingo. “I think change is always difficult for people but I think we’ve helped them, or God has helped them, to see the bigger picture, which is far more impor-
tant,” added Lawton. The church’s new home is currently equipped with bingo hall, restaurants, a former dance hall and several bars. Lawton hopes to install a ‘several hundred seat’ auditorium to reflect the building’s history as a cinema. Heaton Bingo manager Gary Annan said most of his customers had made the move to their new building and “the majority of them love it”.
years, according to Dr William Fung, chairman of the Honk Kong-based global sourcing company Li & Fung. Speaking at the 8th annual World Retail Congress in Paris on September 29, Fung predicted that China will overtake the US as the world’s largest consumer society within 30 years. Of concern to UK-based companies that import Chinese merchandise is Fung’s prediction that China’s minimum wage may rise by as much as 80 per cent in the next five years. Labour cost increases of that magnitude could affect the prices of everything from bulk vending toys to redemption prizes, such as plush, jewellery and electronics. Labelling China’s strategy as both “an opportunity and a threat,” Fung pointed out that the transformation has been taking place since 2009. That was the year China began seeking to strengthen its economy by stimulating greater domestic consumption as a second engine of growth. “For 30 years, China kept consumer prices low, and people like us enjoyed very good margins. When China starts consuming - and with India right behind it - I predict a round of price increases and margin squeezes,” envisioned Fung. The World Retail Congress is one of the world’s largest conferences for the retail industry’s senior-level decision-makers. This year’s event drew more than 1,500 registrants from 60 countries.

INTERNET
Growth in the UK’s online gambling industry is expected to remain robust, with turnover set to break £3bn in the next two years, despite the government’s point of consumption tax.
new report estimates that the net gaming revenue of Europe’s largest online market rose by 12.2 per cent to £2.31bn last year. From December 1, operators will be subject to a 15 per cent tax hike on all bets placed online in the UK, in a move which is expected to raise around £400m for the Treasury in its first full year. Yet authors, GamblingCompliance Research Services, estimate that online gambling revenues will climb 11.4 per cent to £2.58bn in 2014, before rising by a further 10 per

Online gambling set to continue growth cent to £2.83bn in 2015 and 13.6 per cent to £3.22bn in 2016. Daniel Stone, head of data content at Gambling Compliance, told SBC News:“Britain’s online gambling market has enjoyed an uninterrupted run of double-digit annual growth since the turn of the century - and this looks likely to continue into the first two years of the PoC regime.” The report reveals that William Hill retained its status as Britain’s leading online operator in 2013, capturing 14.5 per cent of the total market. The company’s number one status is
under increasing threat from Bet365 however, after the Stoke-based firm boosted its overall share by 2.4 per cent to 13.7 per cent last year. William Hill is second in the sports betting rankings, ahead of Betfair. Yet the most recent data suggests that the betting exchange pioneer is now fighting back, having enjoyed a stellar World Cup on the back of growth of its sports book. In other sectors, the continued decline in the popularity of online poker and slower gains in bingo-led gaming mean that UK gaming growth is set to be
sustained by the online casino segment. UKderived online casino NGR is forecast to rise at 13-15 percent year-on-year from £621m in 2013 to £927m in 2016. JackpotJoy operator Gamesys, with an estimated 13 per cent share, was top of the UK online gaming segment in 2013, after pushing William Hill (11.9 per cent) into second place. Gala Coral also earns a share of the plaudits after its share of UK gaming grew to roughly 8 per cent in the first half of 2014 from an estimated 5 per cent in 2012.
Bowling complex causes job application frenzy TEN PIN
hundred people have applied for just 30 jobs at the soon-to-beEopenight Hollywood Bowl in The Brewery, Cheltenham.A sign boldly proclaiming “Welcome to Hollywood” will greet thousands of bowling fans in Cheltenham as Hollywood Bowl gets ready for its grand opening. The ten-pin centre with its accompanying FEC will occupy a 23,000sq.ft unit above restaurants in Cheltenham’s the Brewery, and this morning announced it will welcome its first customers on November 10.As well as 16 bowling lanes, it will feature coin-op machines, a licensed bar and four pool tables. JamesWalsh, centre manager for Hollywood Bowl, told local press:“We had been looking at Cheltenham for some time before we decided it was the place for us.We should be open soon, and we aim to have a real family environment here. The best thing about bowling is that it is for everyone,of all ages.”
Customers will be greeted to a starlined walkway, similar to Hollywood. Set to a retro America theme, there will be a restaurant called Harry’s Kitchen with seats and booths in front of the lanes. An actual Cadillac luxury car, split into two, will serve as a special eating booth. It has been more than four years since Cheltenham had a bowling alley. Walsh explained:“We want to be part of the community here.We have already invited several schools to come along and we hope to cater for all ages. One of those projects is working with charities and working with disabled children and those with learning difficulties. It is one of those things we are very passionate about. We have had a great response.” Cheltenham will also be one of the first places the company is setting up a town-centre location. Traditionally located in retail parks on the outskirts of town,Walsh is hoping it will pull in
customers from around the area. He concluded:“As well as being in out-of-town leisure parks, being in town centres also provide lots of opportunities to reach a real diverse range of customers. We want to be more than just a bowling centre. We want to attract people on dates, or groups going out for the night. The reason we chose Cheltenham is because I believe the area needs something for families. The demographics of this area and our research tell us it will go really well, and we hope it does. It is a completely different concept, being in the town centre, and what we didn’t want was a big centre with no atmosphere. We want it compact, and for people to mingle and enjoy themselves.”

Sceptre introduces further initiatives

OPERATORS
Large single site operator Sceptre Leisure has launched a further set of new initiatives, with a focus on providing first class customer service. reston-based Sceptre Leisure has introduced additional initiatives in order to improve its level of customer service to supplement other recently-announced business practises. Moving forward, every site will be presented with a unique Income Maximisation Pack. The company’s marketing executive Jessica Hollings-Tennant explained: “This includes a machine booklet,an income plotter to track machine revenue at house level, hints and tips for driving machine income and a number of feedback cards which can be filled in and mailed back free of charge. The pack is designed to emphasise the importance of machines and to help both customers and players to get the most out of them.In addition to the income maximisation pack, sites will be given window stickers which are displayed in the front of the pub to promote
P
amusement equipment to their customers.” Also included in the Income Maximisation Pack is the Sceptre Customer Charter - a guarantee of standards promised to every customer. Hollings-Tennant continued:“We understand the importance of consistently good quality service which is outlined in this commitment to all of our customers.” Sceptre now provides product briefs to customers following all AWP machine changes and installations. There are product briefs for everyAWP operated by Sceptre, informing the licensee and the pub personnel how the machine is played.“This creates an excellent opportunity for the staff on site to better understand their machine and to educate players on its game features. We believe that we are the only operator currently sending out product briefs to our customers through the post,”
added HollingsTennant. In July, the single site operator created a dedicated team of customer liaison managers responsible for driving standards on site and increasing customer support. Hollings-Tennant explained:“Machine operating is a dynamic business that is moving all the time so it is important that our CLMs are based locally in depots enabling them to respond quickly to customers’ needs. CLMs will visit all customers giving them constructive guidelines to maximise their machine income and to resolve any issues they may have. We are investing in employees as a long term personal development role envisioning CLMs as the account managers and regional directors of the future.” She added:“At Sceptre we work hard to ensure that our customers receive the best possible service in the indus-
try. Initial feedback has been positive with customers believing the product briefs are an excellent idea and should have a positive impact going forward. The new initiatives have been well-received by both sites and customers.By introducing these new initiatives and enhancing our customer support we are able to maintain the high standards expected from customers today.” Hollings-Tennant concluded: “In today’s environment businesses need to do more to delight sophisticated customers, which includes providing better support services. It is also essential for machine operators to recognise the importance of both the customer and the player. All our initiatives are aimed at improving the experience for both the customer and the machine player, enhancing the overall service quality.”
Minimum wage rises to £6.50 per hour WAGE INCREASE
National Minimum Wage rose per hour on October 1, a Trisehetoof£6.50 3 per cent. The news was well-received by a UK-based intern recruitment agency, but coin-op trade body BACTA was less than enthused. Ben Rosen, CEO of Inspiring Interns, said: “Whilst we back the news of the NMW increase, it is key that employers are not put-off taking on new staff, particularly in the graduate space. We would like to see a new minimum wage for interns, much like that applicable to apprentices. If the NMW continues to rise employers will limit the opportunities available.” He added: “To minimise the risk associated with hiring a new
employee, many companies elect to pay graduates NMW for the internship period before moving them onto higher-paid positions that carry additional responsibilities. Hundreds of SMEs across the country with extremely limited budgets offer graduates invaluable internships
that give graduates a firm grounding in their chosen industry with the real possibility of a job at the end of the internship. Coupled with rising wages, employers hiring graduates have every reason to be cautious in the current economic climate.” John White, BACTA CEO, however, countered: “The minimum wage is now an embedded feature of our employment landscape, but it is important to recognise that for many businesses each increase is an increase in costs. For the amusement machine industry each increase is an additional tax on the bottom line because we can’t pass on increases to the consumer, as in other business sectors, due to stake and coinage constraints.”
COLLABORATION
and Park Resorts have partnered Pwithlaynation Zappar, a leader in augmented realityenabled products and entertainment experiences, to launch an interactive treasure hunt for young visitors to Camber Sands Holiday Park. Sparky Adventure Hunt lets children explore Camber Sands Holiday Park in a new AR experience. By using Zappar’s free smartphone and tablet app, children and parents can ‘zap’ a series of posters located around the park to unlock AR content. A 3D animation of Park Resorts’ mascot Sparky accompanies children through the hints and tips provided on each poster, to encourage them to explore the park, find the next checkpoint and successfully win one of many prizes including Playnation arcade tickets. Each checkpoint also unlocks a new and interactive experience, from mini-games to “selfie challenges” which allow adventurers to pose with pom poms and confetti or even Sparky himself. With activity spanning the entirety of the Park,
and checkpoints located in popular spots such as the swimming pool and adventure playground, the Zappar app will turn the site into an immersive AR experience - a first for Park Resorts. Max Dawes, partnerships director at Zappar, said: “Working with Playnation and Park Resorts has been enormous fun. Bringing to life an iconic mascot such as Sparky is a great example of how our tech can be used to add an extra layer of excitement to holiday activities and create lasting memories for children.” Eric Doherty, retail director at Playnation, concluded:“In a competitive market it’s important that we keep our attractions as appealing and exciting to children as possible. We’re really pleased with the interactive element that Zappar and AR have allowed us to bring to the children’s treasure hunt. Not only does it encourage kids to explore the world around them, but also helps bring them closer to characters such as Sparky, making their visit to the Park Resort one to remember.”

Chessington to appear in court over health and safety charges AMUSEMENT PARK
In a warning to all amusement attractions, the Health and Safety Executive has ordered Chessington World of Adventures to appear in court over injuries sustained by one of its visitors. n amusement park has been summonsed to court over injuries suffered by a four-year-old girl while queuing for a ride in 2012. Jessica Blake fractured her skull and broke ribs after falling approximately 14ft while in line for the Tomb Blaster attraction at Chessington World of Adventures. An investigation was carried out by the Health and Safety Executive into the circumstances that led to the fall and it has now launched a criminal prosecution against the attraction.

Chessington World of Adventures Operations Ltd, part of the Merlin Entertainments, will appear at Redhill Magistrates’ Court on November 4. The charges were brought under section three of the Health and Safety at Work Act which covers a company’s responsibility to look after people or visitors not in their employment. It is alleged that the amusement park failed to inspect the fences in the queue and did not have an adequate maintenance system in place for them. A spokesman for Chess-

wo consecutive beer duty cuts have had a big impact on sales, employment and Tinvestment in the pub industry, according to data from the British Beer and Pub Association’s Cheers 2014 report, published last week. According to the report, which was produced by Oxford Economics, the government’s decision to freeze the beer duty escalator and cut a penny from the cost of a pint in 2013 and 2014 has given the pub industry a huge boost, with very little cost to theTreasury. The report estimated that by the end of next year, 500m more pints will have been sold and 16,000 more jobs will be created than if the escalator had been left in place. It found that investment by brewers and pub operators has already increased by £44m as a direct result of the cuts. SINGLE SITE
AGE VERIFICATION
The AWP, SWP and jukebox strands of the single site sector could be in for a much-needed boost as the government has announced grants to help pubs install fast broadband internet connections. ub trade magazine Morning Advertiser has reported that the government has launched a new business grant for small businesses to cover the cost of installing faster broadband and better connectivity. The voucher worth up to £3,000 is available across 23 UK cities, and the deadline for applications is March 2015. This grant is part of the government’s Broadband Transformation Scheme
P
and the Department of Culture, Media & Sport said that it wants to:“Make sure that small businesses have the help and support that they need to grow and prosper in our digital age.” Operators of Paragon terminals and other digital coin-op equipment should encourage their selfemployed customers such as public house owners, tenants and lessees to find out more about this scheme and then apply. The operational efficien-
cies and financial benefits that connectivity provides to AWPs, SWPs and jukeboxes are clear to see and simple to measure. If the government wants to help single site business owners to install free or even very inexpensive broadband, then operators should make their customers aware of this exciting opportunity. Places that are eligible for the grant include the following towns and cities Aberdeen, Birmingham, Bradford, Brighton, Bristol,

Newly appointed CEO John White and compliance chief Phil Silver attended the meeting which was prompted by the wide differentiation in results between the Commission/Local Authority testing programmes compared to BACTA’s own. White explained: “The GC/Local Authority testing gave a much lower pass rate for AGCs/FECs than our own test results. I have looked in detail at both ours and the Commission’s testing protocols and they are not that different, so it is hard to understand the difference in results.” He added: “We didn’t get concrete answers to that question during our discussions but what we were able to do was think about how the inevitable perception of bias in an industry scheme was going to be removed - principally by making age verification testing mandatory for BACTA members - something that will be voted on at the Convention.”

Leisure UK’s £2bn Paramount park ‘needs transport infrastructure investment’ THEME PARKS
new report on Paramount’s £2bn theme park development in Kent, UK, states that more investment in public transport, with greater use of the Thames, is required.A yearlong public consultation begins this month before the planning application for the London Paramount Entertainment Resort is submitted. The theme park resort, which gained fast-track development approval earlier this year, is to be built on the Swanscombe Peninsula, near Dartford. The report by local authority Gravesham Borough Council - which sent nine district council bosses to the US in May to research Florida’s theme parks - said: “Conditions here differ significantly from those in Florida and a multi-modal

transport solution, with the operation of the theme park, in particular, designed to control the volume of the peak hour car-based trips on the local and trunk road network, will be essential. “Investment in public transport and making use of the river Thames to encourage alternatives to the private car and service the development will be important. It is important to ensure that the riverThames is itself considered a key asset that has a role to play not only in terms of trans-
port, but also as a complementary leisure resource.” Opening in 2018,the Paramount-branded theme park and resort will be built on an 872 acre site, making it one of the largest regeneration projects in Europe. When built, it will become one of the four largest theme parks in the world. Plans include an indoor waterpark, theatres, music venues, attractions, restaurants, and hotel developments. London Resort Company Holdings - the company behind the development - has also signed an agreement with Paramount Pictures for exclusive UK licensing. It is currently in negotiations with a range of major British brands to sign further licensing agreements.

Threshold already has experience in such matters, having released the films Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, in 1995 and 1997 respectively, both based on the Midway Games coin-op franchise. The announcement came as Tetris celebrated its 30th anniversary. Boasting one of the stranger stories in gaming,Tetris remains both a popular video game and

Rhyl hopes high for real regeneration boost

RESORT REPORT
A landmark sky tower on a seaside promenade in Rhyl, north Wales, could offer rides again as part of an ambitious regeneration of the town.
ne of north Wales’ major coinop strongholds is set to receive a boost in the shape of a cash injection which will see its sky tower back in permanent use. The 240ft tower was last used at the end of the 2010 summer season and needs an estimated £400,000 of repairs. Denbighshire council, however, has revealed that it could form part of an improved promenade, along with a new aquatic centre. Two potential developers have been asked to submit plans. The council intends to deliver “first class leisure coastal facilities” in the coin-op stronghold and recently advertised to find a developer to come up with proposals for the promenade from the Marine Lake area to Splash Point. Councillor Huw Jones, cabinet member for leisure, said the winning scheme would provide ‘excellent’ new leisure facilities and could make

use of existing facilities, like the skytower, which has a rotating observation tower and previously cost £2 for a ride. Marine Lake, Pavilion Theatre,The Sun Centre and bowling greens could also be included in any proposals, he added. The council told the BBC that any developer would be expected to secure private finance for the revamp, but the authority would work with them to explore funding from other sources. Rhyl was designated as a regeneration area a few years ago and both the Welsh government and Denbighshire council have spent money on tackling problems in the town, including poverty, and improving housing. Like many traditional seaside resorts around the UK, it looks like Rhyl could now be on the receiving end of a welcome cash injection.

ACOS 2014 Preview Show guide
The roots of ACOS
Coinslot has produced the official catalogue for next week’s inaugural Autumn Coin-Op Show. The 68-page guide provides information on all the exhibitors, key highlights to their products on offer, tips for eateries and clubs in the chic Chelsea area, the thinking behind the show and all the key industry events taking place at the Stamford Bridge over the two days.
“The Autumn Coin-op Show developed from a number of conversations with manufacturers, suppliers and operators who missed the chance to get together at the end of the season and discuss what had worked well in the market and what the customers were hoping to see in the coming year. The show at Chelsea Village is designed to be just that opportunity.” Karen Cooke.
Meet and greets ACOS wll be playing host to a number of industry meetings which have been tied-in to coincide withe the show. Closed meetings will be staged at Stamford Bridge by the Industry Group for Responsible Gambling, the ALMR, the IOA, Sceptre Leisure, Praesepe and the BACTA Management Coomittee over the course of Wednesday 15- Thursday 16 October.
KEYNOTE
New show, new hope says IOA For Paul Langham, vice chairman of the Independent Operators Association (IOA), the first ever Autumn Coin-op Show is an indicator of real growth. This new event, combined with the growing emergence of second generation AWPs and many other positive factors give the industry cause for genuine optimism. OCTOBER 10 - OCTOBER 16, 2014
The Autumn Coin-Op Show Catalogue This Week
oinslot: How does the addition of the Autumn Coin-Op Show to the calendar of UK trade events benefit the industry? Paul Langham: In our opinion, having a second coin-op show is long overdue for the industry. We’ve only had one event for a few years now and putting a second date in the calendar will be great for meeting customers, seeing new product from UK manufacturers and, at the end of the day, encouraging the industry as a whole to meet, network and discuss ideas. It will be another place for suppliers to engage with the manufacturers, connect and hopefully the show will result in more targeted offerings. It’s also a way to show that the industry as a whole is slowly but surely getting stronger.
C
CS: How would you characterise the current state of the UK
coin-op industry from your perspective? PL:The coin-op industry is still in a difficult position, but it is showing signs of recovery. Things are settling down. We were struggling with the £100 machines, but as the second generation of AWPs are coming through that are bespoke and not conversions we’re seeing an upturn in take. CS: What are the major issues and campaigns you are currently focused on? PL:The IOA is currently focused on maintaining high operating standards, both locally and nationally, and improving rents and shares going forward. We want to keep dialogue with retailers open and positive, and try to help them recognise the importance of working with suppliers. We have lots to do but we are working very hard to achieve it. CS: Moving into 2015, what are your expectations for the industry and what developments are on your wish list? PL:We discussed it a little before, but it is a big issue moving forward - we would like retailers to recognise the value of national operators and to incentivise the partnerships. It’s going to take everyone working together to build a sustainable model that works for both sides. We are hoping and expecting new product for the pub sector, this is the big one. We would like to see a new SWP cabinet with new content that has a mobile linkup. We’d also like to see a lot of new initiatives in the sector from manufacturers to keep up with the current market. RLMS means business RLMS Sales managing director Phil Boulton offers some indepth thoughts on his company’s prospects for the Autumn Coin-op Show and how he views the state of the market heading into 2015.
or a nationwide supplier like RLMS Sales, it’s nigh on impossible to showcase new and exciting machines to a large portion of its customer base without major trade shows.“You would hope that by bringing together suppliers and customers you will create a ‘market place’ and there should be some business to be done,” says managing director, Phil Boulton. “With our customers spread across the UK we don’t always have the opportunity to see them as often as we’d like. The benefit of a trade show is that it brings us all together to do just that under one roof and demo machines, many of which won’t have been seen by some of our customers.”
F
Dedicated to the UK market don’t miss it!
Before the addition of the Autumn Coinop Show, the latter part of the year was sorely lacking a marquee event and Boulton thinks that it may just be the right gathering at the right time: “With key trade shows now reduced to two per annum at the start of the year, I guess it’s indicative of the state of the industry.ButACOS could just be that answer for the latter half of the year. Attendance is key; and whilst it’s stating the obvious, I hope it’s a success for all stakeholders so that it’s something that can be repeated as signs that our industry is on an upward trend.” Ultimately, the success of this new venture will be measured in cold hard cash. “Whilst the cost for exhibitors is a little more reasonable than its predecessor,ACOS still represents a significant investment when travel, hotels, hospitality and time are all factored in,” explains Boulton.“I therefore put a call out to the industry to please come along with an open mind (and cheque book) to see what there is to invest in during the run up to the Christmas season.” Although there’s more to the show than simply driving sales.“Of course,” adds Boulton, “meeting our operating customers is a massive benefit at any time, even if it is to simply discuss their plans for 2015, what they may be looking to invest in, feedback on new product genres and technology advancements such as TITO, which will all feature heavily, I’m sure, in the buzz of Chelsea.A new environment is also good I believe, as it avoids ‘same old same old’ which can sometimes happen.” Some of those future developments may have to involve a shift in mindset, says Boulton. “I think what has been different this year is a seeming willingness to invest in
new equipment. However, for manufacturers and distributors to win that spend and investment, it has still been incredibly tough. Some operators still demand a very short term payback on new equipment, the formulae of which hasn’t possibly changed for 20-plus years, yet the industry and environment has, with far more competition from online and other choices. “Return on investment is obviously a key reason to invest, but does it have to be the only key performance indicator? If footfalls and consumer spend are down, support for new equipment, creativity and technology is still crucial if the games design and manufacturing sector is to survive.Availability of cash is also still challenging and we’re always looking at ways in which we can help our operating partners in this regard.” Despite these tests,Boulton remains positive on the prospects for 2015.“The glass will remain half full. It has to for everybody,” he says.“I’ve been in the sector now for eight years and 2015 won’t be the first year it’s been challenging, but we work at it and find a way. Something always comes along each year that helps and makes a difference. The legislative landscape is all up for debate, regarding the current LCCP consultations on CSR and there will be further changes afoot I’m sure for the harder side of gaming, i.e. B2s.This could be positive for low stake, low prize stakeholders. I would like to see our customers prosper more as this provides the right context for investment in new machines.Whether that’s the perfect combination of improving economy, easier to borrow, good weather, favourable legislation, new technologies, brilliance in design ideas and improving footfalls. I for one would settle for all of these!”

VIEWPOINT
Relax - and see what everyone else is up to As ACOS organisers succinctly put it: “With the outlook for the UK amusement and coin-op sectors at its most positive for several years, the industry now believes that the time is right to announce an autumn event dedicated to the UK market.”
alex lee foreword
hen news broke of a brand new coinop show this October, hosted by the W organisers of EAG, Swan Events, I have to admit I was very pleased to hear it. With the old adage ‘you don’t miss it until it’s gone’ applying perfectly to an event which used to occupy the October slot about to be taken, the aptly named Autumn Coin-op Show has stepped bravely into the breach of what is a five-year hiatus. My, how time flies when you’re having fun… I’m certainly no fan of Chelsea FC - I’m from the North for goodness sake - but I’m quite looking forward to checking out the all-new Stamford Bridge-based show next week. While I always enjoyed the show that used to be held around this time of year, and felt that the organisers did a grand job in promoting it, the crazy layout of the event (lest we forget, across two floors in the Hammersmith Novotel) was a bit of a headscratcher to say the least. I’m sure, therefore, that this all-new event will prove to be
more ergonomic and navigable, from the perspective of exhibitors and visitors alike. It’s not long since I was extoling the virtues of more ‘intimate’, provincial trade shows and while this one is obviously in the capital it’s another event to add to the diary. Furthermore, it illustrates the fact that the organisers believe it’s high time another meeting of coin-op minds was added to the likes of EAG, the Park Avenue Open Day, the Crown Open Day, the South West Show, the Skegness event and so on. With the above mentioned expos in mind, and the generally positive and upbeat nature of the sector at present, the Autumn Coin-op Show could just as easily become as much of a fixture on the industry calendar as the above mentioned events in times to come. According to the organisers, the Autumn Coin-op Show has been created in order to fulfil a demand from a number of established UK-based manufacturers and distributors. Looking at the exhibitor list it’s
difficult to argue with that assertion. Furthermore, while the organisers have been quick to point out the informal nature of the event and how it’s not going to be a typical trade show, everyone with any interest in the direction of UK coin-op will doubtless be there, either as an exhibitor, an attendee or a named ‘supporter’ such as BACTA, the ALMR, the IOA, Coin-op Community and indeed Coinslot. Like all business interests, a proportion of our industry’s future depends on sympathetic legislation and a government that understands how the sector works, what its challenges are and indeed how prolific an employer it is. With these in mind, and the allure of an all-new location, the Autumn Coin-op Show looks perfectly positioned to reflect where the soft gaming and amusement sector is right now and indeed where it could be heading ahead of the larger and more ‘formal’ trade events in January.

ACOS poised to deliver, says organiser With the build-up to the Autumn Coin-op Show almost complete, we speak to show chief Karen Cooke of Swan Events, about why the event may be coming at just the right moment for the industry. oinslot: How has the industry responded to the announcement of the Autumn Coin-op Show? Karen Cooke: I think the response has been really positive. Meeting is the lifeblood of the business - it’s the opportunity to exchange ideas on products, technology, regulation - everything that keeps the industry moving forward. And we always felt that the industry needed that opportunity ahead of such a busy time coming into the New Year. CS: Timing is clearly everything, so why autumn and why now? KC:The autumn has always been a key period for coinop and I sense that many people have really missed the chance to have their input at such a crucial period. The summer season has drawn to a close and operators are getting geared up for next year. It’s all about product and trends, and people want to know where the industry is going. On-site hotels at capacity for Autumn Coin-op Show With visitor numbers comfortably beating early estimates, nearby hotels are rapidly reaching their limit. Thankfully, show partners Event Express are on the case. ith visitor registration numbers running way beyond expectations, it seems clear that a large portion of W the UK’s coin-op industry will be heading towards Chelsea Football Club for the first ever Autumn Coin-Op Show. As a result, the on-site Millennium and Copthorne Hotels are now completely full. Thankfully, show organisers have released a few suggestions for those visitors who are planning an overnight stay and have yet to make reservations. These have been selected by show’s reservation partner Event Express, which has been scouting around to secure competitive rates at some great alternative hotels. Visitors can view these at the ACOS website buy selecting the ‘Accommodation’ link under the ‘Visit’ tab. For many, accommodation during a show is much more than somewhere to stay the night. Hotels can double-up as a venues for off-site business meetings, and when many show-goers are at the same location, hotel bars and lounges become the setting for some informal and impromptu networking. The Autumn Coin-Op Show’s Stamford Bridge venue is in a lively vibrant area which has no shortage of accommodation at every price point. Some great options have been selected by Event Express, including the Doubletree by Hilton in Chelsea. This hotel is situated amongst the bars, restaurants and shops of Imperial Wharf, in one of the most sought after locations on the Thames. The site is two minutes walk from the Kings Road and approximately 15 minutes walk to the show itself. The Chelsea Harbour Hotel has also been suggested as an up-market alternative. The five star suite-style accommodation in located in a spectacular waterfront location, overlooking the marina and is also around 15 minutes walk to from Stamford Bridge, the location of the Autumn Coin-op Show. The IBIS at Earls Court is a popular three star hotel located next to West Brompton Station. One stop on the London Underground takes you to Fulham Broadway, the closest station to Chelsea Football Club and the Autumn Coin-Op Show. Many more options are available and ACOS organisers are encouraging attendees to contact Event Express to help them find accommodation for show attendees at whatever budget best suits their needs.

The market will decide, says BACTA
Crown and Deith preparing stimulus package
Although the industry continues to face serious challenges, BACTA’s chief executive John White believes that the future of the Autumn Coin-op Show is looking good.
Hoping to provide the market with a shot in the arm at the upcoming Autumn Coin-Op Show, Deith Leisure and Crown Director have planned a new pokerthemed initiative.
he sense that there was a gap in the market for a trade show, threequarters of the way through the year, has been firmly grasped by the organisers of the Autumn Coin-op Show (ACOS). And although the fate of any debut show is never certain, the addition of a new autumnal show does appear to be drawing considerable attention. That’s certainly the perspective of John White, the newly appointed chief executive of BACTA.“Early indications from members do suggest to me that there will be a good turnout of visitors,” he said,“and for some companies it will be a welcome addition.”In the end, those who attend will have the power to shape the event’s future. “Ultimately,” said White, “the market will determine whether this will be a feature of the UK show landscape going forward.” White believes that the general mood of the industry has stabilised recently, but that there are long roads to travel and many battles to fight in order to return the sector to its former glory.“Across our sector it has been OK but that is compared to recent years,” he said,“but over a longer comparison it is still really tough. We continue to be hurt by systemic unfairness in our market place.” White is pushing for the government to recognise what the gaming sector
T
adds to the UK economy and how damaged that input has been following years of negative intervention.“We need the market and government to understand the importance of our sector in terms or jobs, tax and the manufacturing base that our industry supports,” he said. A mounting number of pressures have
contributed to the current state of the sector, many of them emanating directly from Westminster.“They should quickly recognise that the machine market and the venues that house them have suffered hammer blow after hammer blow,” said White.“Whether that has been the smoking ban, the withdrawal of s.16 machines, reduction in permitted features on machines, B2 category machines or the replacement of VAT on machines by MGD,which in effect added 20% to cost of machines,” manufacturers, suppliers and operators have found the going tough. The new BACTA chief exec argues that the sector needs support to emerge from the global downturn and to recover from the battering it has endured in recent times. Especially when other competing industries have not endured anything like the same punitive regulations.“The sector needs help to compete fairly for the leisure pound,” said White. Moving forward, however, there is hope for a positive 2015. uppliers Crown Direct and Deith Leisure are heading to next week’s inaugural SAutumn Coin-Op Show with an ace up their sleeve. The duo are offering a progressive sixmonth interest free credit initiative, designed to inject confidence into the market as the major players gather at the home of Chelsea Football Club. This new offer applies to three of the most exciting products just hitting the market, namely Project’s new poker-based Category C AWPs: Find the Lady Ultimate Gamble (50p £1/£100), Chase the Ace Double Jackpot (50p - £1/£100) and Golden Joker (30p/£100). Detailing the purpose of the initiative, Deith Leisure’s Kevin Temple explained that, “over the years we’ve experienced considerable success with poker-based games and the genre remains one of the few Cat C £100 success stories to date. Whilst poker has national appeal and works across the vast majority of AGC sites, the game style can require a longer time to establish itself as a consistently strong performer on the game floor. Part of this is due to poker’s success in bringing new players, who perhaps don’t perceive themselves as slots players, across the low stake gaming threshold. This interest free initiative is designed to give operators the confidence to invest in poker and benefit from, what in many cases, represents the best return on investment available in the machine sector.” Poker games have become a favourite for many UK players, making them a perfect candidate for the inaugural ACOS show. “Project is a specialist in the design and creation of successful poker games,” said Temple, “and the genre has become something of a staple in Britain’s adult gaming centres and bingo clubs with some customers playing models which are ten years old, a feature which underlines their timeless appeal.”

He said JCM’s management has not yet decided whether to keep FutureLogic as a brand. The same is to say about retaining the company’s executive team. Those decisions will only be made after the G2E show, where the two companies exhibited separately. “The timing on this was lousy. We closed and everyone was focused on G2E. There was no time to sit down and start putting together the near and mid-term strategic plan,” explained Nieman. According to Nieman, there is little product overlap between both companies. Instead, they are very complementary, making integration easier. He concluded: “Obviously gaming is the biggest [business segment for both companies]. It is not the only one, but it is our biggest. Following G2E, the integration teams in both groups will sit down and some of those decisions will begin to be made. We know it is good brand name, it is a market leader.”

he acquisition of printer supplier FutureLogic by JCM has opened new markets for both companies. That is the opinion of Tom Nieman (pictured), JCM’s global vice president of marketing. “When we now talk about JCM’s footprint, we also include the FutureLogic printers,” Nieman told the GGRAsia website. FutureLogic provides printers for a wide range of applications, including the creation of player vouchers for casinos and other gaming operators. JCM, meanwhile, designs and manufactures currency validating equipment and cash registers. FutureLogic had sales of $47.2m (£29.4m) in 2013, up by 9.5 per cent yearon-year. The acquisition deal was worth $70.6m (£43.9m), excluding advisory fees. From the three main printer suppliers to the gaming industry - Transact, FutureLogic and Nanoptix - “we now own one and half of the other,” pointed out Nieman.

It argues that pull tab style lottery should be operated and managed by the small operator to prevent larger fruit machine competitors gaining a foothold in their clubs. Along these lines, Interclub Lotteries are introducing a new flexible range of machines designed to help operators hold on to their sites where a competitor can offer pull tab style lottery and the operator cannot. InterClub can now also help operators to run these pull tab lotteries in Pubs. This scheme centres on the requirement for these lotteries to be run for the benefit of a charity and Interclub can help venues to organise either a local charity to work with or suggest a national charity scheme to join.

Comment B2 or not B2? That is the question
“
FOBT or not FOBT?
alex lee comment he Liberal Democrats’ decision to push for a maximum £2 stake on FOBTs at their recent party conference in Glasgow came as no surprise to me, given that their coalition with the Tories has been such an uneasy one since the moment they decided to get into bed with Cameron and co back in 2010.Whatever your personal views are on B2 machines, their stake and prize ratio and their siting regulations, my reckoning is that BACTA’s standpoint is just about right. A level playing field for all regulated adult premises, regardless of what the prevailing price points and pay outs happen to be, has to be the sensible approach. Whether this will ever come to light, however, is anyone’s guess. In other news, I was happy to hear of yet another big jukebox deal being done in the single site sector,on this occasion by NSM and Town and County. As you all know by now I’m a big fan of many forms of music (apart from jazz and pretty much anything that’s been in the top 10 since 1989) and for jukeboxes to continue to be popular, relevant and mainstream is testament to the efforts the UK manufactur-
T
ing and supply chain. When you consider that music is more accessible and cheaper than ever before, it’s even more impressive that digital jukeboxes continue to have such a presence in bars and pubs across the country. Elsewhere, the late eighties coin-op classic Tetris is about to become a movie. Personally, I won’t be queuing up to get in on opening day, but I am pleased that coin-op and video gaming will be in the news when it’s on.I did meet the game’s inventor,Alexei Pazhitnov, at a promotional party in the US approximately 20 years ago and he seemed a sound enough bloke despite having a thick beard and speaking no English. More importantly, the game’s fame, longevity and reputation illustrates how a simple idea can capture the imagination of millions - and make buckets of cash too. Likewise, I’m sure there are plenty of creative ideas bubbling under in the UK at present, not just in video game creation but in all coin-op sectors - some of which will be doubtless on display at the upcoming Autumn Coin-op Show on October 15-16. Best of luck to all concerned - organisers, exhibitors and visitors alike.
Pier pressure group pushes for r
Brighton’s West P Gaming and a fire h coverage.
alex lee media watch West Pier revival is back on the agenda in Brighton, A according to the Brighton Argus. The West Pier Trust has presented ideas to members and is looking to kick-start a public debate in the coming months over replacing the iconic structure. The charitable trust responsible for the site is working towards the derelict pier’s revival and plans to publish a development planning brief in 2015. Initial ideas presented to trust members offer the choice between a traditional promenade pier and a commercial complex. Another option is to “do nothing” which the trust said must be seriously considered “however undesirable”. A new pier could contribute to city housing with possible tourist apartments - but it was considered “unlikely” to make a significant contribution. Members were told the design should reflect the dynamism, creativity and diver-
sity of Brighton and Hove and act as an “alternative village hall for the city”. Any plan would have to be approved by Brighton i360 Ltd and be in harmony with the tower. The plans are not expected to attract any serious interest until after the i360 opens in 2016. Trust chief executive Rachel Clarke said: “If there wasn’t an i360 no-one would be interested in building a new pier because it’s a derelict site with no footfall. But with the i360 it is suddenly a much more attractive prospect. It’s very early days but so far the feedback is the majority would like to see a new pier.” As landlord of the site, the trust will receive rental income and also a cut of gates from the viewing tower. The trust must clear seabed wreckage of the old pier within two years of the tower opening at an expected cost of around £150,000. John Regan, managing director of consortium City Partnerships, which has previously
tried to rebuild the pier, however, said: “The whole purpose of the i360 project was to deliver a new pier, everyone’s forgotten that. I’ve been trying to rebuild the pier for 20 years but I think it’s dead in the water.” Meanwhile, server-based gaming specialist Inspired Gaming has agreed a deal to provide betting operator Gala Coral with a range of multichannel mobile content via its Remote Gaming Server, according to www.igamingbusiness.com. Under the deal, Inspired will integrate Virgo RGS into Gala Coral’s gaming platform across its Coral.co.uk, Galacasino.com and Galabingo.com websites. Games included in the deal include a selection of crosschannel slots titles and a number of exclusive games designed specifically for Gala Coral. Gala Coral players will also have access to selected thirdparty titles via Inspired’s Virgo RGS while the operator’s own

Smoke and flames poured through Holland Park Amusements. Many residents watched on as fire crews from Mansfield, Edwinstone and Worksop put out the flames. Phillippa Bousfield, sales negotiator at Moss & Co Lettings, next to the arcade on Albert Street, said: “A fire officer said if the fire had been left for two more minutes it would have come through into our building.” Staff at the lettings agents said they had smelt smoke earlier in the morning but thought it was coming from an old heater that had been turned on. smoke billowing through their upstairs meeting room. Bousfield added: “It was so chaotic, and I had a baby in my arms as a colleague on maternity leave had come in. We were just concerned with getting the baby away from the fire.” Dame Flogan Street was cordoned off and traffic was diverted. James Barrows, owner of Music Scene next door but one to the arcade said: “The owner just ran outside with his head in his hands. There was a lot of panic. We only took over the business in March so we were lucky we weren’t in the same building or it could have spread.”
politics he economies established inside video games have been laying the Tgroundwork for a revolution in money. For proof, we look no further than Mt. Gox, which, for much of 2013, was the centre of media attention thanks to its involvement with Bitcoin. The hacking, search warrants and scandal of $450m (£281m) worth of Bitcoins that vanished without a trace would come later. Before the boom and bankruptcy of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Mt. Gox, or Magic: The Gathering Online Exchange, was a website where Magic players could buy and sell cards for the game at the going rate. In 2011, Mt. Gox’s founder Jed McCaleb decided to repurpose his by-then defunct trading hub into a Bitcoin exchange. He sold the domain to Mark Karpelès,a French expat who cultivated it into a thriving money market from his computer in Shibuya, Japan - although the physical whereabouts are unimportant, since the virtual currency is largely unregulated and independent of any government. The big ideas underpinning Bitcoin originated in the history of video games.“Virtual currencies in game worlds created the cultural testing place,” said Edward Castronova, the author of several books on synthetic worlds and virtual economies. A number of Bitcoin competitors are vying to become the stable virtual currency everyone uses. This is troublesome for governments that traditionally earn revenue from taxing a single, non-virtual currency, like the dollar. In a sense, the governments have wizards and ogres to blame. Long before the coin rush atop Mt. Gox, Magic:The Gathering, players were among the first to pay money for rare cards that granted them an advantage when playing the game. This instilled the idea that virtual goods could be exchanged for real funds. Sony’s EverQuest, which came next, let players wheel-and-deal their merchandise, hawking it in an
online bazaar. Two parties could now exchange virtual currency for something of value totally independent of a central bank. This is why real-world governments get concerned. Traditional economies are based around the dollar, or the yen or the peso.Today, if you go to the coffee shop and buy an espresso, you’re going to pay in dollars and cents. But in five to 10 years, according to Castronova, you’ll have a digital wallet on your smartphone, similar to the peer-to-peer payment interface in an MMO. “You’ll wave your phone at a cash register and it will say:‘We accept Bitcoin,’” he said. The two computers will do their thing and the transaction will be completed, but it won’t get reported for sales tax because Bitcoin transactions are anonymous. Eventually it could add up to a huge drain on the economy. Unlike credit cards and paper money, cryptocurrencies never tie into the dollar machine that is the Federal Reserve. Bitcoin has its roots in Chinese gold farming, where unskilled labourers would spend all day playing World of Warcraft, mining gold ingame. Then they’d sell the gold for real money to players looking for shortcuts. Likewise, mining is at the rockbottom heart of cryptocurrencies. Essentially, if you log into the Bitcoin network and let your laptop crunch numbers for long enough, you’ll be compensated in Bitcoins. “The whole idea that you create something that has value by making it hard to mine - that comes from games,” said Castronova. And not just any games, but the most time-intensive, online role-playing games, which require a huge level of investment for players to enter. Cryptocurrencies have a reputation as being outlier currencies for those who distrust the government, but their arrival could signal a larger trend: people simply aren’t participating in the economy as much these days.
