The stage is set for a seminal show EAG EXPO
Earlier than ever, but no less current, EAG once again sets out to establish the tone of the year in coin-op, with a cautious optimism pervading it’s early hours. Joe Ewens reports. AG 2015 has roared into life, with the expansive ExCel arena humming to the noise of thousands of machines and redemption games, as the latest video titles compete bombastically for the wise roving eyes of the show’s many visitors. Stalking the halls deep in conversation are groups of operators on the prowl for the next big thing, while the combined expertise of the coin-op industry gathers to promote its latest and greatest products. Held earlier than any EAG before it, this year’s event is a true curtain raiser for the industry and as the show progresses through its three-day run,may well prove a litmus test for the trends of the coming year. Along these lines, the potential of redemption continues to blossom, with a number of the most well known suppliers, including the likes of RLMS and UDC,choosing to dedicate their most valuable stand real estate to the latest innovations in ticket-based entertainment. There’s more of a leisure-centric flair to the hall in general this year, with the debut of the Visitor Attraction Expo seamlessly adjoining its larger cousin. The line is further blurred by the strategic positioning of kiddie ride stalwarts, such as World of Rides, on the invisible border between the two shows. The programme of seminars also takes place under VAE’s aegis, marking another sign of integration between new and old. That’s a theme that BATCA are
E
hoping grows from their work at this year’s event. Infusing the storied coin-op sector with the vibrancy of new ideas. Also to make the show in many ways a celebration of British industry. Machines designed and built here in the UK are the mainstay of the show, with the likes of JNC and many others exporting these highly sought after creations to countries around the world. The reverse is also true and there’s plenty of the world’s best imports on show this year, clambering to make an impact in the UK market. In many ways EAG is an international event, with names like Elaut and Team Play making regular appearances across supplier’s stands. A renewed sense of optimism
from the entire coin-op industry, which has grown from an improving economy and was provided a catalyst in the form of theAutumn Coin-op Show, is being reflected at this EAG.Not only on the stands, but in the spaces between them. Sales people are taking a moment out from their work to pose with the life-size Despicable Me minions that Whitehouse Leisure has unleashed on the show floor, while a inflatable Frankenstein’s monster leaps playfully at unsuspecting visitors. The mood, all told, is that of cautious positivity. This will be a big year for the industry and the potential for EAG to catch fire and abandon that note of caution may yet again demonstrate the show's power as a trend setter for the 12 months that follow it.

Mecca Bingo has chosen SG Gaming as the primary provider of its server based content, in a major deal that links the two companies for the next five years. G Gaming has inked a landmark five-year deal with Mecca Bingo to provide the nationwide operator with a comprehensive serverbased gaming package. The deal sees Mecca unite with SG to blanket the company’s UK bingo clubs with digital B3 and Cat C content pulled from a central server. As part of the agreement SG will supply a range of Clarity, T8 and T7 cabinets, which will run a set of the company’s exclusive games, along with a selection of titles from Playtech subsidiary Videobet. “We are delighted that Mecca has chosen SG Gaming to be their supplier of choice for server-based gaming,” said SG Gaming UK group managing director, Phil Horne. “This is a groundbreaking deal that represents a major step for-

These will include Rainbow Riches, as well as the continuation of key licensed titles, such as Monopoly Hot Properties, and WMS titles The Wizard of Oz Over the Rainbow, Zeus II and Black Knight. “Mecca and SG Gaming have already demonstrated a strong working partnership in delivering a competitive gaming offer, and we are excited to continue this in the years ahead,”said Horne. “This fully integrated gaming solution will
provide Mecca with a range of hardware solutions and operational efficiencies that are designed to drive cash box growth. We have invested heavily into our platform solution over the past few years and we are delighted to see the implementation of this solution into the bingo sector on such a large scale.” The newly opened UK TITO market also forms an important part of the deal. Each individual server-based installation will include a fully networked terminal, which, among other operational benefits, will make the provision of a full TITO system a p o s s i b i l i t y. Mecca staff will also be able to use data collected
by this central terminal to perform data analysis, track free play awards and organise tournaments. Roll-out of the new system is expected to being during early 2015, with plans upgrades to terminals, venue infrastructure and new terminal instillations all required to get the programme fully up and running. Staff will also be brought up to date with t h e
new hardware and software through comprehensive training. “This deal goes a long way in meeting our slots strategy and, more importantly, our customer needs,” noted Mohammed Zabed, head of slots at Mecca.“This deal provides Mecca with a digital server-based gaming solution for our clubs. The trials we jointly undertook demonstrated that the content provision, yield analytics and enhanced platform tools drive improvements in cash box revenue and customer participation. This was instrumental in making our decision. The range of hardware, platform and diversity of content will provide a comprehensive solution that will cater to all customer types and support our multi-channel convergence strategy.”

Astra Gaming Group becomes Novomatic UK CORPORATE IDENDITY
Novomatic have made their presence felt in the UK marketplace, and not just with their product portfolio. The company has made the sensible and obvious step of changing its identity - the Astra Gaming Group is now Novomatic UK.
T
he Astra Gaming Group is no more following the announcement that it is to change its name to Novomatic UK.The move brings it in line with Austrian gaming giant, Novomatic, who wholly own the successful UK company. The change takes place with immediate effect and is expected to have no immediate impact on the operation of the business. Novomatic UK replaces the Astra Gaming Group in all of its functions, including its role as the holding group for UK gaming companies Astra Games, BellFruit Games,Empire Games,Extreme Live Gaming, Gamestec, Greentube, Luxury Leisure, Mazooma Interactive Gaming and RLMS Sales. “The rationale behind the name change is to adopt a more logical approach to the group’s activities and reinforce the inherent values and core strengths of the Novomatic brand within the UK marketplace,” said an official statement.
ZANE MERSICH
Change is on the horizon for the newly minted Novomatic UK, however, with confirmation that they will open a new headquarters in Brentford, London during the first quarter of 2015. Deliberately positioned in the nation’s capital and commercial hub, the new location will also include a new studio space for Novomatic’s live casino dealer provider, Extreme Live Gaming. “The Astra Gaming Group brand has served its purpose well as a means of integrating the Novomatic Group into the UK gaming space,” said group CEO Zane Mersich.“With that integration now complete, we are able to focus our efforts more effectively on taking the Group business forward under the auspices of the globally renowned Novomatic brand.”
POLITICS BACTA TO CHAMPION COIN-OP CONTRIBUTION This year, by its own admission, BACTA finds itself in tough competition to have its voice heard. “We need to recognise that support of the sector will by nature take a back-seat to wider reaching national concerns,” concedes Simon Storer, BACTA’s new head of communications. That said, the organisation is clear on how best to raise awareness of industry concerns. “It’s in stressing the contributions the industry makes to the wider UK economy,” says Storer. “This is a sector which manufactures domestically, it creates software domestically: it exports, it creates high-end technical, IT, manufacture and engineering jobs - these are aspects that shouldn’t be ignored.” Image Ref: SimonStorer.jpg
Advanced sales for Vortex whips up EAG confidence REDEMPTION
one side of the vibrant RLMS Sales stand at EAG 2015 is Fthelanking bright orange Vortex machine, accompanied by creator Marcus Sheehan (pictured). He has high hopes for his creation at the show, and with good reason.A number of his test units in the field have been garnering high praise. So much so that in recent weeks, Sheehan revealed that a major arcade operator has opted to purchase two of its test units outright. Vortex has been whipping up a storm across the country in many different sectors.“It went to the Trafford Centre, Bognor Regis, Butlins, PrimroseValley and two coastal operators,” said Sheehan. The game is a unique take on redemption, challenging players to step inside a wind-filled capsule to snatch at tickets as they whirl
around them. The machine also shares a feature with the slots titles that occupied the EAG hall.Tickets that are not selected are stored for a special jackpot round, unleashed when the back box is full.“All the tickets that haven’t been caught get put back into the machine,” said Sheehan, “and that’s four or five hundred.” Vortex plays a part in a growing focus on redemption for RLMS, that sees a major portion of its sizeable EAG presence given over this rapidly growing FEC sector.“We’ve definitely got more redemption than previous years,” said the company’s Martyn Allsop.“It certainly seems to be the way to go. For many arcades it’s been a major growth area over the last two or three years and we’re responding to that marketplace.”

BACTA sets out industry game plan for new pound coin ACTA will be pushing for Machine Gaming Duty (MGD) to be halved temporarily to off-set the cost of the new pound coin in 2017. Following the Chancellor's announcement last Spring that a new twelve-edged coin would be introduced to combat counterfeiting, the organisation has been developing plans to buffer the industry against the oncoming expense. BACTA chief executive John White said:“The thing that we have to keep pointing out is that we can’t pass on any cost in the amusements industry. We’re constrained not only by the coinage itself, but also by having a maximum stake. So any time there’s a cost increase, it just comes straight off the bottom line.” Although the final figures are yet to be calculated, BACTA estimates that the cost to the amusements industry to convert all the coin mechanisms will amount to approximately £100 million. “In principle,we’re saying to the government, you really need to

ning to ask for a temporary reduction on the tax for other machines while the industry is in transition. “We anticipate the entire thing taking around three to six months and there’s a whole logistical exercise to be undertaken beforehand to pre-load,” said White. “People have to make decisions about when and what machines they’re going to convert and that all depends on where the new pound coins are in the country.” Full details of the proposals, including the exact period of time MGD would be reduced for,are still being formulated by BACTA.After developing firmer cost estimates, however, the organisation will soon be meeting with the treasury. “There’s a new person who’s just joined the treasury on the civil service side and once we’ve spoken to him then we can start to escalate the campaign,” said White. At the moment, however, White and his colleagues are still establishing the minutiae of the proposition. “We’ve said we would do it and we will,” said White,“But we’ve got to put the case together in a lot more detail than its current form. We have to get some serious numbers behind us.”

Finding a way for Cat C to compete on the leisure stage BUSINESS FORECAST
With the recently-established Gambling Business Group adding another string to the industry’s bow and BACTA revving up for a fight over FOBTs, 2015 could be a year of positive change for Cat C games manufacturers. Bell-Fruit’s John McLoughlin explains how the company aims to get ahead in the coming year.

hen £100 jackpot machines were introduced in January 2014, the change gave a welcome break to a struggling sector, but for games manufacturer Bell-Fruit, it also served as a reminder of the challenges facing the industry. “I think it is fair to say that the new £100 prize helped to stem the decline in Cat C performance,” says management and sales director John McLoughlin,“But Cat C will struggle to compete so long as there is such a disparity as we still see between pubs/AGCs and the B2 machines in LBOs.” With this in mind, BellFruit is planning to work closely with the Gambling Business Group (GBG) and BACTA to lobby key policy makers for change in 2015. This will include a campaign for the Gambling Commission and DCMS to approve changes to Technical Standards. In addition, Bell-Fruit will push for the government to formalize a timetable for reviews of stakes and prizes in an amendment to the 2005 Gambling Act. “This may allow the introduction of features that enable Cat C machines to compete with other leisure spend opportunities,” explains McLoughlin. In addition to these legislative campaigns, the key challenge for 2015 is to ensure that Bell-Fruit continues to produce innovative games. The company responded to the prizemoney increase last year with a wave of popular £100 AWPs including improved versions of classic Deal or No Deal and Monopoly games, and it still www.suzohapp.co.uk attests to the crucial importance of its products.

“As always the greatest challenge is to continue to produce the best games in both analogue and digital formats,” McLoughlin commented. “Since last year we have learned a lot about developing ever better games and we are constantly honing our statistical profile to ensure that we give the player the best possible experience.” One of the company’s biggest success stories, the Deal or No Deal licence, will continue to feature prominently in Bell-Fruit’s range this year. McLoughlin comments: “Deal or No Deal has been extremely popular ever since we launched our first game back in 2006, and I have every confidence that it will maintain its appeal through 2015 and beyond.” However, with the continued issues faced by the Cat C sector, the company is committed to releasing brand new products to maintain its competitive edge. “We, like our competitors, are only as good as our latest game, but I believe that we have the best team of games designers in the business who will continue to focus on bringing innovative and exciting concepts to market,” says McLoughlin.
Miller Amusements in Whitby is concentrating on its successful family rides offering while pushing for new legislation that would help arcade operators better balance their offerings. Mark Miller, director for the family-owned business,
stated that adult-oriented cash area growth will only further diminish without a serious redress of market imbalances. “With current systems of tax and licensing, it’s difficult to make new investment in cash areas economical,” says Miller. “Until we get parity with the bookies, cash areas will continue to suffer.” PIERS ON THE BRINK The adverse weather over the weekend has left WestonSuper-Mare’s now derelict Birnbeck Pier close to collapse, after 40mph winds damaged an already unstable boardwalk.

oinslot: Are there any new business challenges you anticipate for the coming year? Peter Harvey: An ongoing pipeline of new products and games is crucial in this industry, and we work closely in partnership with the manufacturers to encourage this. In the longer term, the introduction of the new polymer banknotes and £1 coins in 2016 and 2017 respectively will have a significant impact across the whole coin-operated sector. Our machines will need to be upgraded so they accept the new currency, and there will be a large cost associated with this. However, we are working with a number of cross industry bodies to find ways to limit the damage caused, particularly to family and single site operators who could be put out of business by the extra investment. CS: How does Talarius anticipate FOBT machines to affect trade in 2015? PH: The AGC industry is doing all it can to compete within its regulatory framework, but the existence of the far higher stake FOBT machines on the high street in betting shops means customers have far more choice when they look beyond our venues. We continue to respond to this as a business by focusing on our staff, customer service and venue infrastructure, but regulatory imbalance is ultimately a hindrance on our success. CS: What other action is Talarius taking in response to the challenge of FOBT providers? PH: We are working with political parties and the rest of our sector to press for this issue to be looked at, and propose a solution whereby the maximum stake on B2 machines is reduced significantly to a level that the next government and responsible gaming bodies are more comfortable with, at which pointAGCs should also have access to those new machine limits. The call for AWP overhaul PUB OPERATIONS
British pubs are changing. For IOA vice chairman Paul Langham, so too should the traditional AWP offering.
he end of 2014 saw some frank language being spoken by key industry figures regarding AWP. “As an industry we need a root and branch overhaul of the AWP offering and a clear and honest appraisal of what the modern consumer is looking for and if we are delivering it,” stated Paul Langham, vice chairman of the Independent Operators Association (IOA). “Is there something else we can do differently?” asked BACTA president Steve Hawkins. “How can we reinvent this industry to make sure that we’re set well for the next 20 to 30 years?” Pub closure rates have
T
levelled considerably since their nadir of the 20092010 fallout period from the financial crisis. However, leisure is an area dependent on a customerbase comfortable with its degree of expendable income, and here - there’s a problem. Whilst the UK economy has stabilised and even enjoyed limited growth since the first quarter of 2013, the spending habits of the public remain in the recession mindset. In Langham’s words: “The spending public is far more discerning and far more ‘canny’ about what they spend their hard earned cash on.” The decline of the UK pub sector is much lamented within coin-op
circles, for concurrent with pub closures comes a diminishment of the traditional market forAWP trade. That said, there are those who still thrive within this industry: Greene King and Wetherspoons are but two multi-million pound operators who continue to expand. The character of the pubs which have closed is also of note. In 2009, when pubs were going out of business at the frightening rate of 52 per week, research from the BBPA showed that on average, 51 of these establishments were ‘wetled’, in that they predominately sold beer.At the same time, branded pubs and cafe-style bars were opening at the rate of two a week.
It was figures such as these which prompted the BBC’s home editor Mark Easton to claim: “The pubs that are closing, overwhelmingly, are those that existed to serve customers who came to drink and to smoke:without the beguiling fug of tobacco smoke and the draw of cheap beer, such places find it much harder to survive.” That’s not to say that
increased government understanding of the economic contribution of both the UK pub and amusement industries would aid the plight of AWP, but it should be recognised that a transition is occurring in what was once a stable and recognisable marketplace. The question posed, the industry as a whole now needs to establish how best to adapt.

For its executive director Elliot Ball, it will revolutionise the way that Clacton - and ultimately the industry at large - does business. lacton Pier has taken the plunge and gone cashless. Installation of Semnox’s Parfait solution in the coming weeks will see the deployment of self service kiosks at the pier for customers to purchase and topup access cards, whilst waterproof wireless readers for exterior rides will allow them to enjoy the full

spectrum of Clacton’s offering without the constant requirement for currency. It’s a significant investment, and one that wasn’t taken lightly. “It’s a huge step for us:it’s a leap of faith of sorts,” claims Elliot Ball, executive director of the Clacton Pier Company. It’s true that the technology involved may initially be unfamiliar to
both customers and staff alike, and it’s that line of thinking which underlies a healthy skepticism on Ball’s behalf regarding short-term sales impact:“Whether or not it’ll benefit us in terms of straight-off-the-bat increase of income, we’ll have to wait and see,” he concedes. Long-term, however, the benefits of the new system

seem manifold. “First of all, it’s going to tighten all the controls here at the pier - which is the main reason to put it in,” he says. “But there are also tremendous implications on a number of others fronts as well.” It’s no exaggeration. With digitalisation, comes data: the kind of data that will show Ball uptake levels and footfall. “Those sort of reports will enable us to make more informed decision in the future,” he adds. Then, there are the marketing implications to consider. The system allows the offer of package deals to pier-goers that can be easily FURNISHINGS ANTRIM BRINGS VEGAS STYLE TO LONDON SHOW Floorers to the great and good of the coin-op industry, Antrim

tracked and accounted for. As Ball puts it:“That’s marketing directly into our customer-base.” Finally, freed from cashier duties, a shift of focus can take place regarding the responsibilities of staff.“Essentially, our team can be more outward-looking and maximise their customer service provision,” says Ball. In a seasonal industry, timing is everything, and it’s no coincidence that the system is being fitted during this quieter winter period.“It should be up-andrunning by the February half-term,”Ball tells us.“That way, we’ll have five or six
weeks grace for our staff to fully converse with the system before we hit the ground running for the Easter holidays.” Whilst Clacton Pier isn’t the first leisure operation to opt for a catch-all cashless solution, it is perhaps the first of its scale and scope at least within the UK. For Ball, its indicative of what he believes to be an upcoming snow-ball effect in which operators nationally make the switch.“Our feeling is that once it’s installed, it’s going to revolutionise everything that we’re doing here,”he concludes.“It’s the future - it’s the way the industry’s going.”

THIEVES TARGET FRUIT MACHINES AT DERBYSHIRE PUB
GOGO PONY SECURES EARLY EAG SUCCESS
Burglars have raided pub fruit machines, stealing an undisclosed sum of cash. The intruders broke into the prem-
ises, smashed into the fruit machines and stole cash from inside them. The incident took place at Eaton Farm, in Wilsthorpe Road, Long Eaton, between 12.30am and 8.20am on the 9 January. Police reported that the building was entered via a window and through the pub lounge. The report stated: "They smashed fruit machines to get to the money. It is not known if anything else has been taken." The general public have been urged to call 101 to report any suspicious activity.
Whilst ACOS saw a pre-sale test version of GoGo Pony, EAG 2015 has seen JNC Sales’s first outing with the company’s latest family ride now fully approved for the UK market. The title’s initial outing back in October performed extremely well in terms of pre-orders, a trend which has continued in the form of secured orders on the first day of EAG. “It appeals to a wide range of children,” explained the company’s technical director Tom Clarke. “Children can play GoGo Pony from the age of two upwards - and there aren’t many machines suitable for kids that young.”

Amusements Redemption key to seaside performance

Now in its 48th year, the 2015 edition is expected to be the biggest draw ever and will feature 448 performances and 147 events at 37 sites while award-winning author Ali Smith is serving as guest director.

he owner of Mumbles Pier has made a new attempt to proceed with its plans to transform the foreshore and headland areas of the attraction. Ameco has applied for planning permission to bring the foreshore, seawall and boardwalk elements of its scheme seaward after an argument over the quarry rock face behind it, as well as a two-year extension to get the project underway. The company already secured planning consent to build 27 flats on the foreshore between the pier’s

amusement arcade and the inshore lifeboat house, as well as a hotel or apartments - or a combination of the two - on the headland. It is hoped third party developers will purchase both sites, enabling Ameco to refurbish the pier and build a new boardwalk and sea wall. AnAmeco spokesperson told the South Wales Evening Post:“The consequence of the delays mean a redesign of the scheme, especially the coastal strip site, and a renegotiation with third party developers.”

Minions franchises were his front-runners for 2014. “I think cranes will continue to perform very strongly in the coming year,” Moyle proffers. “There’s a new Minions film due for release in May and a Jurassic Park film with plush to go with that, so I expect that to drive sales.”
After being cancelled last year, the Southend Air Show is returning from September 12-13 after volunteers helped to raise over £220,000. Being held on the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, the event is expected to attract in excess of 300,000 visitors of all ages to the area.

To get the foreshore plans back on track,Ameco has adjusted its plans to take the pier road behind the foreshore flats instead of in front, and for the boardwalk to run in a line from the pier to Mumbles Amateur Rowing Club.
The company has spent nearly £1m on the plans to date, without starting the pier or foreshore work, and does not expect to make a profit on the scheme. The spokesperson added that it was still in discussions with developers, and that it had seen a resurgence in interest in a headland hotel.
Sale secures bright future for Welsh holiday park HOLIDAY PARKS
he future of a major North Wales seaside Tholiday park that was put up for sale for £8.5m has been secured after it was sold to a local rival. Estate agent Savills confirmed that a deal had gone through for the Whitehouse Leisure Park, which features its own amusement arcade and
snooker room and is located in the resort of Towyn. Savills revealed that the new owner of the site was the Seldon family, who own the adjacent Golden Gate Holiday Park. Robert Gale-Hasleham, director of leisure and trading services at the agent, said the sale highlighted a growing confidence in the seaside
holiday park market. He commented: “Whitehouse Leisure Park offered a superb opportunity to purchase a wellestablished caravan park, which is situated on the north coast of Wales, a well-known holiday park destination. “This was a major transaction and demonstrates the rising confidence in the holiday park
market.” Whitehouse was sold through a shares transaction for the operating company, having been offered at a guide price of £8.5m. The site is spread across almost 19 acres, comprises 315 developed pitches and has planning permission and a site licence for a total of 348 static caravans and lodges.

come and that we appreciate their custom because they are keeping us in business. With this firm customer service focus at the centre of the management strategy, the company has no plans to follow the lead of Clacton Pier and invest in a cash free ticketing system. Whyte explained: “We have put the digital cashless system on the back burner because this is very much a hands-on, meet and greet business. Time will tell whether it is the future of seaside amusements. At the core of this is a push for consistent standards in order to offset the feast and famine patterns
that can characterise this seasonal sector of the industry. Whyte believes that friendly service has contributed to a loyal base of customers who return to the arcade regardless of weather conditions. “We need to hit our target turnover whether it’s hot, raining or snowing, she said. “It’s very important that the business is clean and the staff are pleasant - we take what we are given with the weather. The second focus for the business is on products such as licensed redemption and new products that provide entertainment for different generations without being too technical.
“Some of our customers need guidance on how to use basic machines like the ticket stations, Whyte added. This is reflected in the investments Pavilion Amusements are looking to make at the big trade shows this year, with a focus on skill and family fun games as well as prizes based on current films. However, Whyte concedes that keeping up with trends is important, in addition to a maintaining family-friendly atmosphere. “In this difficult climate it is very important to invest in new products to keep the interest of the public, she said.

Kenwick Park rebuild gets underway
Worker freed following coin machine mishap
Lisburn bowling by Easter
Work to rebuild Kenwick Park leisure centre near Stroud will begin in the next two weeks. The venue burned down in a major fire in October. If the site’s latest plans are approved by the local council, the centre could be trading once more by the end of the year.
Fire crews were called to the Gala Bingo club in Chorley earlier this week after a female employee got her thumb crushed in an automated coin machine. The 24-year-old woman was quickly freed by firefighters disassembling the machine and was subsequently taken to hospital by ambulance.
Construction has commenced on a new eighteen-lane bowling alley at the Leisureplex in Lisburn, County Antrim. The £2.5m new venue is expected to open by the Easter holidays.

New research has suggested that the UK may soon have more coffee shops than it does pubs - a claim the BBPA has cast doubt on. offee shops could outnumber pubs in the UK in just over a decade’s time according to new research by the Daily Mirror’s data journalism website ampp3d. By combining studies from research consultancy Allegra Strategies and the British Beer and Pub Association that show a sharp decline in pubs and rapid rise in coffee shops, the data team concluded that there could be more coffee shops than pub as soon as 2026. A spokesperson for the association told industry magazine Eat Out:“It is impossible to predict that far ahead. Our own research shows that pub closures have slowed and are now lower than previously thought - we estimate at around 13 per week. There is increasing confidence in the sector, not least due to government action in cutting punitive rates of beer duty, which hit pubs hard. “A third duty cut in the March Budget would help to stabilise beer sales, keeping more pubs open, as beer sales still account for

Seaside resorts debate highlights north-south divide
Seaside resorts A number of seaside MPs took part in last week’s Westminster Hall debate on the future of coastal resorts. Here’s what they had to say: ALAN CAMPBELL, TYNEMOUTH (LAB): “If we get back to a 1930s level of public spending, we will end up with a deteriorated public realm; we saw that as recently as the 1980s, and seaside towns bore the brunt of that. “In the north-east we have problems with a relatively low-wage economy, zero hours and underemployment. If seaside towns depend on the spending power of residents as well as visitors, and we end up with a lowwage economy, seaside towns will continue to struggle.”
SEASIDE RESORTS
MPs have heard how seaside resorts in the south have prospered while those in the north struggled, as highlighted in a report funded by BACTA. debate by MPs on the issues facing seaside resorts has identified a north/south divide in the coastal town leisure economy. Liberal Democrat John Pugh, who scheduled the ‘Economic growth and coastal towns’ debate held at Westminster Hall last week, revealed that the divide largely favoured those resorts in the south. Pugh said the finding had been made in a recent report by Sheffield Hallam University’s Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research that was commissioned by British Destinations and partly funded by BACTA. He told fellow seaside MPs: “Hallam says that at the moment the towns doing best off the back of tourism are largely, but not invariably, in the south, and those doing
A
worst are largely in the north. “I note that the hon. Member for Blackpool South is here today and Blackpool is an example that Hallam cited as one of the resorts that has been most hit by change in leisure trends. “So there appears to be some sort of north-south divide - not exclusively, because obviously some areas along the Essex coast have taken a hit too.” Pugh, MP for Southport, said that while the ambition to rebalance the national economy had been one of the best, too much focus on cities has had a detrimental effect on seaside resorts in the north. He explained:“There is a logic in that, as cities are obviously crucial, but it can mean that resorts are overlooked. That is because cities in the north, as they develop, can compete in new ways against resorts.” “We have certainly seen that in my area. Manchester and Liverpool are now very active in the conference sector; in a sense, they have stolen business from places such as Blackpool.” Pugh said constantly developing city centres are now sold not as hubs of industry but as leisure destinations in their own right, giving them a tourism advantage as they remain better connected than most other areas. This problem was compounded
in many parts on the north by key local decision makers who do not focus on the coast at all, he added. He said:“The new money - if there is new money at all - tends to come in via the cities and not through other routes. “Although there is the coastal communities fund, and we are glad to have it, the per capita spend of that fund is a drop in the ocean compared with city deals.” Addressing Penny Mordant, under-secretary of state for communities and local government and MP for Portsmouth North, Pugh called on the coalition to consider coastal policy in the context of wider government policy. He commented: “Personally, I would like the minister to have more power: to fight our corner on transport; to oblige the local enterprise partnerships to take more notice of their coastal towns; to protect and support marketing strategies in a time of council cuts; and perhaps even to lobby the Treasury for VAT cuts for in-bound tourism, as happens in some competitor countries. “We are not a basket case. All we really need is a fair deal that is bolted properly into government policy in all departments. We are necessarily on the margins of Britain, but we do not want to be a marginal afterthought when it comes to Government policy.”
MARTIN VICKERS, CLEETHORPES (CON): “Having come through the years of decline, the resort has reinvented itself. The investments from Pleasure Island and Bourne Leisure have played a major part in developing the resort for the twentyfirst century. Cleethorpes has seen many new business grow and the unemployment rate continues to fall. This government have done a great deal to support that, particularly through the regional growth fund and the coastal communities fund, which have helped various resorts.” ADRIAN SANDERS, TORBAY (LIB DEM): “My main request to the government is not on VAT but to increase the amount of money in the coastal communities fund by a significant amount by raiding a tiny percentage of the regional growth fund. As small coastal communities are full of small businesses, they cannot lever in the kind of private sector money that they need to compete fairly for regional growth funding. The coastal communities fund, which is tailor-made for coastal communities, is the obvious way forward.” GORDON MARSDEN, BLACKPOOL SOUTH (LAB): “We must have decent economic drivers in seaside towns such as Blackpool. Small businesses need

We need the government to recognise the big issue of houses in multiple occupation and the unfairness of local government settlements, which has been spelled out since 2010, with skewed demography and pepper-pot deprivation not being recognised in funding.” DAMIAN COLLINS, FOLKESTONE AND HYTHE (CON): “We will never regenerate our coastal towns if we feel sorry for them. We should feel proud of them, and we should make being a 180-degree town on the coast a virtue. The coast in east Kent has a bright future. We are on the edge of a genuine
coastal regeneration, but the government’s role in providing infrastructure investment through the growth funds and local enterprise partnerships to support that growth will be vital.” CHRIS RUANE, VALE OF CLWYD (LAB): “What is central government doing for investment in my constituency’s coastal towns? In Rhyl it is closing the office of HMRC and the family courts, and will either close or relocate the Crown post office. The 50-year decline, especially of seaside bucket and spade communities, has not been addressed properly. In Wales it is now being addressed and I urge the minister to take a look at the best practice in Wales.”
ERIC OLLERENSHAW, LANCASTER AND FLEETWOOD (CON): “I welcome what the Government have done in the past five years through significant investment. A great deal more is needed I suggest that whichever party next has power, we may need a minister for coastal communities to bring all the disparate parts of government together and build on the achievements of the present government.” PENNY MORDAUNT, PORTSMOUTH NORTH (CON. AND UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR COMMUNITIES AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT): “The government are at one with the honourable members in wanting to see our coastal towns thrive
and we are committed to making them better places to live, work and visit. We have done that through a variety of tools and incentives, freedoms and flexibilities to help drive growth and create jobs, including the coastal communities fund; tax breaks; local enterprise partnerships; enterprise zones; city deals; the regional growth fund; transport spending, with £9bn to date and £15bn to come; investment in broadband infrastructure; the better care fund; sea defences; community rights through neighbourhood planning; and community asset transfer.”

Argyll and Bute to vote on FOBT measures
Sega lends support to tax cut campaigns
Gambling Commission takes key role at WrB
Lotteries under review
Councillors in Argyll and Bute are to vote next month on whether to lobby the Scottish and UK governments to pass measures to tackle ‘addictive’ FOBTs. There are approximately eleven licensed betting premises in Argyll and Bute offering around 40 FOBTs and some councillors want to reduce the impact of these machines’ impact on communities.
Commercial businesses in the UK are getting behind the campaign to reduce VAT on the tourism sector with Sega Amusements the most recent to lend its support. Sega’s general manager Justin Burke said the firm will ‘continue to support’ BACTA and BALPPA for a reduction on Machine Games Duty and ‘more general issues such as VAT on tourism’.
The Gambling Commission is taking a key role at the World Regulatory Briefing (WrB) during ICE 2015 with chief executive Jenny Williams appearing alongside key regulatory figures from markets as diverse as The Netherlands and California. To be held on February 3, WrB will highlight significant changes to the UK regulatory act and newly elected European Commission.
The government has launched its long-awaited consultation on society lotteries. Due to close on March 4, the review will look at the governance of lottery profit direction towards charitable causes, umbrella society schemes and competition protection of the National Lottery.
GBG: May’s general election is just one of 2015’s seismic shifts TRADE BODY
With May’s general election holding the promise of a new government, and continued uncertainty surrounding the role and remit of the Gambing Commission, the Gambling Business Group sets out the issues that could affect the gambling industry most, and explains which developments are going to feature as a key priority in 2015. Peter Hannibal, the trade body’s chief executive, talks to Coinslot. NEW MARKETS BALPPA HIGHLIGHTS FOOD AND BEVERAGE OFFERINGS Is food and beverage the next big thing for the parks and leisure sector? Trade association BALPPA are hoping so with this week’s co-located EAG/VAE 2015 trade shows providing vis-
The UK gambling industry and our members have a number of key issues facing them in 2015 which are to a great extent prioritised chronologically. We have a new team at the DCMS and there will be a new government elected in May. We are working with and supporting the new DCMS team to help with their understanding of the wider industry and its issues in order that they are able to be effective in the shortest possible time and that they do not inadvertently cause unnecessary problems for our members and their businesses as a result of any misunderstanding. We are going to see a new government elected on May 7th and we will be focusing on making that transition as trouble free and progressive for the industry and our members as possible. There will be a host of new names in key positions through-

itors with an ideal opportunity to see a number of new food and beverage products. Alongside a number of new play equipment products, BALPPA CEO Paul Kelly believes food and beverage innovations ‘support all kinds of businesses in our
sector’ and it’s this area in particular that could ‘add a great margin to businesses and be part of the customer experience in providing a souvenir of a visit’. TAXATION BACTA CALL FOR LOWER TAX ON SWPS BACTA has proposed a reduction of Game Machine Duty (GMD) on SWPs
out the parliamentary structure and this is an opportunity for us to offer and share knowledgebased learning about the UK gambling industry as opposed to reaching decisions and views derived from the many misrepresentations they may have read in the national press. We are pleased that the general response to the recent research sponsored by RGT has been measured. The thought process regarding the next steps is underway and we are contributing to that dialogue accordingly. However, we are mindful that whatever conclusions are reached and whatever actions are proposed must be thoroughly understood, including the risks and nature of any ‘unintended consequences’. Furthermore, they should not be assumed to apply to other (non B2) products without similar supporting evidence being in place. The importance of this critical piece of work cannot be over-
stated, not just for the Bookies, but for the industry as a whole. The last issue that I would like to highlight is the remit and role of our regulator The Gambling Commission in the light of Greene King’s recently successful First-Tier tribunal appeal. In the narrative, the Judge made some statements regarding the assumed scope of authority of the Commission which, if they remain, will have implications for all of us and potentially our relationship with our regulator. Everyone will be aware that the Gambling Commission disagree with the judgement and are launching an appeal to the Upper Tribunal Court, however, whilst this maybe an uncomfortable position for the Commission to find themselves in, the period of uncertainty is not good for the industry and worse still, we could find ourselves in a protracted state of limbo if it is not dealt with quickly.
from 20% to 5% in a move to aid struggling pub owners. “Pubs are a vital community asset,” said BACTA chief executive John White. “And these machines help keep them going.” There are approximately 15,000 SWPs in the UK with an average weekly taking of around £20, of which a fifth currently goes on tax.
“It's not a lot of money, which is good, because if the Chancellor agrees to cut the current rate to 5% then it won’t cost him much,” White added. “But a few pounds a week can make a huge difference to pub owners who are operating on such small margins.”

Clarion Events in £200m sale
Top female gaming talent recognised
In search of ‘something unique’
Irish Gaming Show dates announced
Conference and expo organiser, Clarion Events, has been purchased by global asset management firm Providence Equity. The company behind ICE Totally Gaming has been purchased for a price thought to be just over £200m. The price was likely raised by stiff competition from a number of potential suitors.
Five female game developers have received matching funding from Creative England as part of the innovative Queen Of Code campaign from Crowdfunder. After receiving over 50 applications, the first five to have reached their funding targets have been given an additional £3,000 from Creative England.
Bourne Leisure is at this week’s EAG in search of products to develop its family offer. Kevin Scott is on the hunt for ‘something a bit unique’ that could include ‘motion-based such as a smaller simulator or something unique in redemption’.
The 36th annual Irish Gaming, Casino and Amusement Show will take place from March 34 at the Morans Red Cow Conference Centre in Dublin. This year’s show will be one of the most important providing the latest information on new legislation for casinos, arcades, bingo, betting and online gaming.
The Bohemia: a new kind of pub
PUBS
One of north London’s latest new openings bears little resemblance to the pubs of yesteryear. Providers fear not: the environment is changing, the desire for gaming and amusement remains.
ere you to travel back twenty years, grab the average pub-goer, and then show them The Bohemia the latest high-street pub in North Finchley, London - there isn’t a great deal they would recognise. Beer is served - that’s true enough - but there’s no sign of the behemoth brands here: none of your Fosters or Carlsberg or Heineken. Instead, handles bearing the names of ales and lagers most have never heard of line the bar. These are so-called ‘craft’ beers, drinks from independent breweries here in the UK, or imported at a premium. The interiors are sleek and trendy. The demographic is young and professional. The gender split is even. Knitting and writing groups take their seats alongside those merely out for a social.Food is served - not your average pub
W
grub, but a classier kind of fare: pork-belly and sirloin, nut-roast for vegetarians.“We’re trying to give people different reasons to visit,” explains manager and coowner Senan Sexton.“That’s very important if you’re not located in a big urban hub.” With pub closures still prominent in the minds of those reliant on the health of the sector,it does well to pay heed to the nature of the pubs actually opening during this troubled time. In this respect, the fact that The Bohemia took over a site in 2013 which had once been an ailing outlet of the Irish pub-chain O’Neill’s - a venue our erstwhile time-travelling punter would have identified with immediately - may well be telling. For Sexton, who also operates The Bull in nearby Highgate through his business The London
Brewing Company,The Bohemia aims to serve a higher purpose than that of a mere drinking-hole. “We’re a community pub, says Sexton.“We’re trying to fill a gap for our particular area and provide people with somewhere to meet - rather than just a place to drink.” It might surprise some to discover that this includes playing amusements machines. A Star Trek pinball machine operates in one corner.A coin-op table-football game is in another. “We had places which we wanted to fill with something other than tables - something that would create a bit of atmosphere,” Sexton explains.“It gives a different vibe to the place.” The fact that in this instance amusement took precedence over tables is a crucial endorsement for amusement stakeholders: as The Bohemia, and venues like it, increasingly look to be the new face of the British pub. And here there’s further good news, because foremost amongst Sexton’s goals is to make The Bohemia a fun place for people to visit. “We’re all about people having a good time and going home and remembering the night out they had,” he tells us.“We’re an entertainment zone for adults - we provide a reason to get out of your house rather than stay at home watching Eastenders.” Amusement providers take note: the British pub is changing, and it wants to have fun.
Right product, right time, state RLMS TECHNOLOGY
right product at exactly the right time,” is how RLMS’s Tony Glanville “choseThe to describe Project’s Fortune Hunter 500 which is one of the three stand out games appearing on the RLMS Sales stand at this week’s EAG. “Fortune Hunter arrives at EAG just days after we received the latest batch of income figures which are amongst the best we’ve seen from any B3 for at least 12 months,” he explained. “The significant point is that the income is spread across the compendium. It’s a very balanced suite and the test data shows that all of the eight games are attracting player activity, which is a very positive sign and indicates the longevity of the investment.” According to Glanville operators are being attracted by the inclusion of TiTO as well as Project’s Mi Games Online initiative which enables businesses to receive a further six new games per year for a charge of just £35/week. He stated: “Fortune Hunter 500 is Project’s first TiTO enabled game and their approach is straightforward and future proof. Customers committing to a Mi Games contract are able to secure six new games for less than £1,820, which is little more than £300 per game. Furthermore, those with existing Casino Kings receive a free upgrade to Fortune Hunter 500 when they take out a Mi Games contract. All in all the Project package is a great kick-start to the year.”

Gunning for success?
Ladbrokes leaves four more jurisdictions
The Mall of Qatar has revealed plans for a multifaceted, family entertainment centre, scheduled to open late in 2015. In addition to a 19 screen cinema and puzzle room complex, the project includes virtual simulator style attractions Vituosity and Juniverse. The centre will also house the world's first Angry Birds Activity Park.

A new amusement park in Orlando, Florida has caused much debate as to appropriateness of its theme. Machine Gun America allows customers aged 13 or over to fire military-grade automatic weapons in a variety of simulated settings.
Ladbrokes has added Finland, Portugal, Romania and Russia to its list of restricted jurisdictions after last year restricting gaming services to players in Canada, Hungary, Switzerland and Norway. Ladbrokes now forbids players in 68 jurisdictions around the world from accessing its games.

CEO and president international hardTwareheof manufacturers SuzoHapp has been promoted as part of a leadership shake-up within the business. James Brendel, who has been in senior roles at the company since his own business merged with Suzo-Happ Group in 2005, was elevated to chairman of the board of directors with immediate effect. The
new role is the culmination of more than 30 years in the coin-op industry and will see Brendel focussing on overall strategic direction for the company, relinquishing his other duties as CEO and president. Taking selfies has become an international phenomenon and you can barely spend more than ten seconds on your chosen social media platform without catching glimpse of a new self-taken photograph. The craze has never been easier to join with the introduction of Sega’s Bluetooth operated Tokio Selfie
T
stick, featuring a shutter release and zoom for Android devices. The Tokio Power Bank, which makes use of solar charging, is also expected to be a popular addition. Smart devices are becoming more and more power hungry, leaving you risking running out of juice when you need it most. Both of these new items been designed to enhance the upgraded 3G Tokio Smartphone, 7-inch Tokio Tablet 3.0 and Tokio Time Smartwatch. These affordable high quality pieces of lifestyle technology have been carefully developed to compliment Sega Prize’s existing range of cameras, headphones and bluetooth speakers. These include the Tokio Sound Bluetooth Speaker, which wirelessly connects with laptop and portable devices via one touch NFC or Bluetooth technology. The Tokio Time Smartwatch will also be on show and is specifically tailored to work with the latest smartphones. This allows users to answer calls, receive messages and access their music all from the convenience of a minimalist time piece.
CASH HANDLING
Solid as a Rock Suzo Happ’s new cash handling centrepiece offers a simple, reliable, secure and cost effective way to provide extra customer service and cut down on internal cash processing Suzo-Happ Group is to introduce the Rock (Recycling Of Coins Kiosk) from Comestero to the market as part of its CoinPro range of change machines at this year’s EAG. The Rock allows customers to insert coins in bulk, where they are counted, validated and changed into bank notes, before being placed into dispensing hoppers ready to be used for change. This allows customers to change their coins into banknotes and vice versa. Counting and validation speeds of up to four coins per second are possible (depending on coin size), ensuring that customers are not left waiting too long to change their coins into notes and providing a fast and anonymous way for customers to change their money. The simple and intuitive user interface is made up of an LCD graphic display and has four practical selection buttons, to help simplify
S
the user experience. An advanced 32-bit CPU operators at the heart of the machine, controlling all of the peripherals and system operation, allowing staff to easily use all of the accounting and diagnostic functions through an intuitive menu system. The Rock boasts an impressive list of peripherals: including the RM5 HD Coin Acceptor, Evolution Hoppers (with option for ITL SMART Hopper), NV200 Note Acceptor and Puloon Dual Drawer Note Dispenser, all housed in a well designed, secure cabinet. It has a large capacity despite its compact footprint, boasting a coin capacity of approximately 6000 Coins and up to 2000 bank notes. Maintenance of the Rock is also easy, thanks to its practical internal design. Two extendable peripheral shelves ensure that everything is within easy reach for cleaning and general maintenance.

JUKEBOX
Something in the pipeline Cumbrian digital jukebox manufactures JayBox have weathered the financial crisis and are gaining market share, with new technology in development which managing director Graham Bolderson believes will represent a giant leap forward for the sector.
ayBox managing director Graham Bolderson likes the level of trade JayBox currently enjoys just fine. “We continue to grow,” he tells us. “I think that’s probably as good as you can get in this climate.” He has a point. Whilst pubs continue to close across the country, his principal marketplace continues to diminish but JayBox sales figures defy this trend. The conclusion? In Bolderson’s own words: “If we’re growing, someone else is losing share.” That said, breaking sales records isn’t the JayBox style. Employing just nine
nnovative Technologies are to showcase a number of printing products from Isubsidiary Innoprint at this year’s EAG. The printing manufacturer expects the portfolio to attract strong interest, with the emphasis on high quality, low cost printing alternative. The portfolio consists of compact coupon, high capacity flatbed and SMART ticket printers.

members of staff in Penrith, Cumbria, the size of the business prevents mass manufacture and distribution. “We’re quite content with relatively slow growth and building a good reputation,” says Bolderson. He’s quick to acknowledge accompanying budgetary restriction. Marketing, for instance, has taken a back-seat as the company has prioritised product development and manufacture. But here, says Bolderson, the music-seeker wins out. “We’ve paid so much attention to pampering to the actual end users,” he remarks. “We actively invite them to add things onto the jukebox, and virtually anything that anybody asks for - we’ll put it on.” It’s that kind of provision that builds customer loyalty, and may well explain JayBox’s continued success. “The breadth and depth of the music on offer in pubs and clubs is still absolutely critical and builds great loyalty,” he continues. “We have stalwart clients now who, whenever our boxes rotated out for someone else’s, the clientele insisted for our product to be put back in.” The sum total of this brand loyalty equates to growth of market share, and with it, reinvestment in the development of the next product. Bolderson seems cautiously optimistic for its unveiling in the early part of 2016. “I’m fairly convinced that next year we’ll have something fairly significant to offer,” he comments. “We’re keeping it very much under wraps at the moment as the thinking behind it is perhaps as pioneering as our original product was.” JayBox came to the sector over a decade ago as technological pioneers, and Bolderson seems confident that the next generation of JayBox will sustain that reputation. “We’re throwing all our resources at it at the moment,” he says. “Our next leap will be quite a quantum one.”

Seaside resorts must see themselves clearly The economy may be seeing sunnier days, but resorts and coastal arcades must have a clear strategy if they are to ride the waves of optimism he year has only just begun, but already we’re seeing some major discussions about the future of Britain’s seaside resorts. On the 6th January, a report on coastal towns was debated in parliament; a development which was, in itself, fantastic news for the leisure industry. If Westminster can inject valuable resources into Britain’s beautiful coastline - and into the businesses that bring tourism there - we may just see things picking up for operators. Throughout the debate, one message rang loud and clear, however: the coast is having an identity crisis, and seaside resorts will need to focus on branding if
T
they are to make the most of the economic upturn. This week, Elliot Ball at Clacton Pier and Lynda Whyte at Pavillion Amusements, Dawlish, gave two very distinct views on the way forward for their brands.Whilst Ball is looking to the future with the installation of a new cashless Semnox system,Whyte maintained that a family feel and good old fashioned handson approach is the best way to earn customer loyalty. Whoever is right - and they may both be right - it’s obvious that vision and leadership will be the ultimate saviour of the seaside.

The EAG mission is to deliver, and on the early showings, the industry is determined to make sure it does here was excited chatter coming from the floor of EAG on its opening day, as a sense of optimism blew across the ExCeL centre. The addition of the complimentary Visitor Attraction Expo and the slowly shifting economic climate all helped to feed a more positive feeling among the visitors and exhibitors. People were certainly keen to talk, not just about the new machines entering the marketplace, but about the future of the coin-op industry as a whole. The general feeling is that there are good times ahead - when and how was not necessar-

ily clear, but the sense was that it would be well deserved. With a little luck, on top of huge endeavour, this year’s EAG will provide a crucial starting point for a more vibrant 12 months to come. An ever growing appetite for redemption and the potential for modernisation were just some of the topics being bandied about the show floor. Fresh ideas and positive thinking are a boon for the industry and evidence of the collective belief that success waits just over the horizon. EAG is always expect to deliver: and on this performance, it seems likely to.
Making its point An important four months ahead, it seems that BACTA has a point to make ne thing is certain from the early showings at EAG this week: BACTA seems to be on a mission. And that can only be a good thing. The executive is talking robustly and the messages are becoming clearer and more potent in their positioning. The listener - well, you can never account for them - but, the arguments in favour of the industry are becoming more potent and more persuasive. This is a major, and welcome, shift in

the personality of the body representing the industry. It appears to have shed the antagonistic approach which, let’s be honest, simply failed to break down the walls for years. Instead, there’s a more measured style which - given that the case for the industry has so much in its favour might well find support. It always helps when you have a stong argument: but boy does it sound better when it’s delivered well.
media watch ew Year, new hopes: well that’s how trade N association BACTA are looking at things - albeit in a slightly more determined and gritty way. Talking to our sister publication, Coinslot Review, BACTA president Steve Hawkins was in extremely strong voice ahead of the EAG Expo. Focusing on the strategy for 2015, he turned his attentions to taxation. Hawkins told the paper: “We’ll also continue to strive for a correction of market imbalances, particularly between bookies and the inland AGC sector. With parity, comes the freedom to innovate: for too long, a scenario has endured whereby the economical has, out of need, taken priority over the inventive. It’s with this in mind that we believe taxation on SWP
machines should be reduced to 5 per cent. As SWP takes significantly less money than other gaming machines, it seems illogical for them to be caught within the same kind of taxation framework.” But it wasn’t just HMRC that were on his radar. The industry per se was also set a challenge: “it can only be of benefit to ask ourselves: do we have our offer right? It’s true that many, many arcades are very similar to the way they were twenty or thirty years ago. The fact of the matter is that today is a very different world. I think it’s for us to challenge ourselves as an industry and ask more of these probing questions. Is there something else we can do differently? And how can we reinvent this industry to make sure that we’re set well for the next

20 to 30 years? That’s a key challenge which we need to get to grips with.” Such circumspection was less in vogue in betting publication Betting Business Interactive where problem gambling, sensitivities et al, were explored against the bacdrop of the latest official research. “Problem gambling is a complicated and, as is frequently shown in studies, is a multi-product issue. The simple solutions that are all too often mooted will not deal with the problem, but shift them, potentially to areas where they are less likely to be identified. If this research could have done something, it is to get all those invested in problem gambling and gaming machines to work together and identify some really effective ways to
prevent harm without having huge implications for the rest of the gambling population. If people can find some room for manoeuvre in their (up until now) ingrained positions, with all crusades, reluctance to threaten the bottom line or political grandstanding put to one side, then perhaps this research and co-operation can benefit the people who really need the help; the problem gamblers.” With ICE just round the corner, and the UK buoyed by its gathering at EAG, there’s always time to explore new horizons - and the Macao Gaming Show has asserted itself to force people to do just that. International Casino Review took stock of the emerging exhibition and more closely at the allure of Macau - and despite
downbeat stats, the run of data remains, well, astounding. The paper reported: “As one exhibitor laid out a simple list of numbers. When you look at Macau, the SAR welcomed 30 million visitors last year, 80 per cent of whom were from Mainland China. Although this figure is high, there are 1.3 billion people in Mainland China, so only a small percentage of people are coming to play at this time.” ‘However, although over recent weeks China has proved itself susceptible to market forces, the country’s long-term growth is all but assured and this will translate into added revenues for Macau.’ Let’s hope EAG and ICE can bring a fraction of that prosperity to the UK.
S: What do you think can be done to change the negaC tive narrative surrounding gaming and how much does this narrative hold the industry back? JP:The supply of our products to pubs really is at the soft end of the gaming market. Remember many of our products are purely entertainment and I would like to see entertainment in our sector pushed up the agenda. Before the 2005 Act our Category C machines were known as AWPs - Amusement With Prizes. We need to get the fun back into pub products and not try to emulate the higher stake and prize products of purely gaming and betting establishments.
there’s no point in whinging we have to get on with it.
CS: In a commercial world seemingly dominated by corporate culture how important is it to have such an important group whose businesses are run by owner/manager entrepreneurs? JP: I could easily say essential but the reality is the pub sector is about competition and performance.
