The hustle and bustle of EAG has a way of crystallising coin-op’s m to EAG chairman and BACTA veteran, Martin Burlin, to touch o

C

oinslot: There’s a definite amusement focus at this year’s EAG, why do you think that is? Martin Berlin: In the last few years the industry has not been on a level playing field with the FOBTs and everything else that’s going on. Now, you can gripe about it being unfair, but to be honest, life is never fair, and people are realising that you need other things in your business. You need other products that make money. In the pub industry, for example, they’re now having children there, so you need more products so parents can have their children entertained when they go to a pub. That’s why you see here now [at EAG] so many more stands with more non-gaming product. CS: With this in mind, coupled with the debut of the VAE this year, do you expect EAG’s relationship with BALPPA to grow? MB:We’ve always had a great relationship with BALPPA.With the arrival of Paul Kelly they were looking for extra funding,so I said ‘let me go away and I’ll put something together.’ So Karen Cooke and I put together this package which we presented to BALPPA. Basically it is their show, their name, though we as EAG own the rights. They get a certain percentage of the profit up front and after we split it on a 50/50 basis. I’d be more than happy for BALPPA to earn one to two hundred thousand from this show, because it means the show is a great success. And I honestly believe that the visitor attractions side of the industry is a market that is desperate to grow and have a voice with somewhere that represents their products

and their business. That’s why we’re hoping that next year will be better and the year after that better still. Once we can create momentum, it will grow. CS: Moving on to issues affecting the gaming sector, what changes are you seeking at the next triennial review? MB: I think it’s important that the triennial review stays as a triennial review and it’s not the start of another three years towards a solution, so you end up with six years. It should be every three years, so everyone knows where they are. The other thing is Cat D.That has stayed stagnant now for many many years and we have to find a method of developing Cat D so we can grow Cat D. Otherwise we will finish up in ten years time with a product for which the stakes and prizes were set 30 years ago.No one’s going to want to play it. CS: So is now the time to start planning of what BACTA will present? MB: I think if you see the BACTA plan for this year, we’re sitting down to discuss how we go forward so we can present in time for the next triennial review. Within BACTA that’s something that will begin this year. And with other associations:what’s important is that we’re all singing from the same hymn sheet. CS: How can manufacturers and operators make machines more compelling? MB: Provided people are enjoying the game, they will continue to play. People have a finite amount of money, if it takes a bit longer does it really matter. As long as when they leave the

EAG establishes its amusements credentials TRADE SHOW

sing coin-op’s most potent concerns. During the show Coinslot spoke rlin, to touch on some of the themes raised by this year’s event.

As ever, EAG provided the coin-op industry with a new perspective. Giving clues to the way that the 2015 will unfold and penning the deals that will shape its course. Joe Ewens reports. t’s the week after the show before,as the coin-op industry collects itself after a whirlwind period of hotels, hauling, networking and selling. As 2015 stretches ahead, companies around the country will now build on the lessons learned and connections made during three days of trade show activity. The takeaway from this year appeared to be that even some stalwarts of the gaming machine are taking a long look at amusements. Many of the busiest stands were those which were packed with redemption and video machines. WhileAWPs and the like continued to attract attention, it was the increase in the ratio of amusements which caught the eye. Numerous major suppliers were firm in their belief that redemption was set to extend its growth throughout 2015 and that there are no signs yet its popularity has peaked. On the gaming side, Cat C continued to provide some of the most attractive new developments, with machines still being developed to capitalise on the £100 jackpot. At many stands the story was that new machines were out on test and performing well. The verdict on what could be a golden generation of £100 Cat C games will become apparent in the early part of the year, with Easter likely to provide a litmus test of where this sector goes next. Although no official figures have been released, reports are that visitor numbers were slightly down during the first day of the show and, whileWednesday saw the hall swell, Thursday was characteristically slow. There were the perennial calls

I

game, whether they’ve won or lost, they’ve enjoyed the activity. My father used to have a saying for this: ‘When it comes to gaming machines, you are selling time.’ So the person who plays the machine, he or she may be playing the machine, but he’s buying time. He doesn’t know he’s buying time, but that’s what he’s doing. Which is why when a machine’s broken, if it can’t be serviced you cannot get that time back. If you’re out of a bottle of JohnnyWalker Red and you’ve got a bottle of Bell’s,you can pour the Bell’s and you won’t lose a sale. But once a machine’s down that’s it. When you look at the percentage of people that actually play a machine,it’s about 4-5 percent of the market.I say,if we can develop products with new features, that BACTA are trying to achieve in negotiations with the commission, that encourage more people to play the game, because they’re enjoying playing the game, you will make more money without increasing your stake or prize. You actually increase your market. If you can get your market up to 25 percent you’ll take a load more money. It’s been my experience that since the 1968 act every time a government changes the act,

apart from the bookmakers with their machines, every other sector’s suffered. The next act’s never as good as the last act. So consequently I think it’s important that we can try and achieve something with sensible negotiation. I think the good thing about BACTA is that they are now in a good place. All the bridges that were burned. All the damage that was done,we’ve now rebuilt those bridges, we’ve replanted and things are beginning to grow. So I’m hopeful that in the future, that we will be able to make a strong commitment for the industry as a whole. That’s what this exhibition is here for. CS: How important is it that the show reflects social responsibility MB:Social responsibility is something the industry always had. Now you’re having to put it in black and white, to make sure that everyone is actually doing it. Because there’s no point in all of us saying we’re going to be doing this and we’re going to be doing that and the odd members says, well I’m not bothering.Everyone has to have social responsibility and people not prepared to be responsible, they will lose their license and I’m sorry to say, quite rightly too.

for a reduction to two days from a small number of visitors and exhibitors - which reinforced the case that EAG, no matter when where or how,may always be done differently. While the show certainly ran as smoothly as ever, there were the expected mixed reactions to moving the event forward, which meant that preparations were largely completed before the Christmas break. Supporters for both sides of the debate could be heard across the show floor, but there was no evidence that it impacted the high quality of the stands on show. Perhaps the most valuable aspect of EAG will, and always has been, facilitating conversation. The chance to meet face to face with

customers and competitors is highly prized and was eagerly capitalised on throughout the show. BACTA resurrected its yearly networking lunch and expressed an intent to run it again in the years to come, while the trade body’s lounge also provided a vital stopping point for members and non-members to touch base on the group’s plans for the new year. The neighbouring VisitorAttraction Expo added some flair to proceedings and co-organisers BALPPA came away with a positive feeling and ideas to improve the show after its debut outing. With a full year to prepare, theVAE is expected to truly explode during its second show and both the coin-op and leisure industries eagerly anticipating a mutually beneficial future.

Crown Direct and SG Gaming have announced a deal that will see Crown distribute T7 and T8 machines, in the hope of introducing server-based gaming to independent operators.

as a top tier UK supplier they have established contacts around the country with a large number of operators. This made them an ideal fit for SG, which was on the lookout for a company who could help the T7 and T8 reach a new audience. “It’s a fantastic partnership and a special deal, said Crown’s Dean Harding, speaking on the company’s stand at EAG. This deal could be worth more to smaller operators than to either Crown or SG, if the take-up of serverbased gaming continues to ramp up during 2015. Bingo sites, in particular, have already embraced the concept, with SG themselves singing on to provide a large number of connected machines to Mecca just last week. Meanwhile independent sites are missing out on the technological bandwagon and are in danger of being outmatched by sites that can offer machines which host new games every week. “This will help smaller operators keep up with the corporate competition, confirmed Harding. In the field, the machines are receiving rave reviews, said Horne.“The T7 and T8 are performing very well already on site,he said,“and we’ve had a fantastic customer reaction so far. Horne also confirmed that that a new content pipeline for the internet capable machines was in the works, meaning that those operators who take advantage of Crown’s new offering will be purchasing a machine with a roadmap of new games already in place.

Following what it described as a ‘very positive’ EAG, RLMS Sales was quick to praise the performance of Bell-Fruit’s new Deal Or No Deal Win Fall and Queen We Are The Champions games at the East London show. The two ‘elite’ cabinet machines were described by RLMS and marketing co-ordinator Martyn Allsop as ‘stand-out performers’ and ‘very popular’. "Both took good orders and helped bring a lot of visitors to the RLMS stand, so we were very pleased overall. And the feedback from customers has been very, very positive so far, he added. Whilst contracting some of its fibre-glass work to another UK provider, the company does most of its manufacturing activity inhouse, and ships its products all over the world. “I’d say approximately twenty per cent of our sales are in exports, said sales manager Wendy Townsend. “Most of our international sales are in second-hand products, but there’s a contingent of new machines that do very well also, both generic and branded alike.

B2B COMMENT NEWSWEEK REPORT This year’s EAG in all its glory. 16

Paul Langham voted in as IOA chairman INDEPENDENT OPERATORS

It’s a new dawn at the IOA as longtime chairman John Powell hands the baton of leadership to coin-op veteran Paul Langham.

Respected industry figure Paul Langham has been named the new chairman of the IOA Group, succeeding John Powell who has stepped down after 15years at the helm of the UK’s largest independent machine operator. Langham, who has 40 years’ experience in the industry and is managing director of leading operating company Town and County Leisure, was confirmed in his post at the IOA AGM, held at last week’s EAG. In other developments Nick Rudd, managing director of Bob Rudd Leisure, was appointed IOA vice chairman with Chris Harrison,of Alan Davis Automatics, joining the five strong executive team of Paul Langham, Nick Rudd, John Powell and Steve Hawkins. Commenting on the outcome of the AGM,Paul Langham said: “I’m honoured to be leading the IOA, an organisation which continues to raise

the bar in machine operating and is a standard bearer for professionalism and dedication. Having worked alongside John Powell for more years than we both probably care to remember I know only too well the amount of time and the insight he has dedicated to the IOA. It is fair to say that the vast majority of the success we have enjoyed over the last decade and a half can be traced back to what he has brought to the table. John’s gift to the IOA is that he has introduced a raft of systems, structures and procedures which underpin the organisation and enable us to respond and adapt to the demands of operating in what is a dynamic business environment.” Looking to the future. Paul Langham added: “Every organisation needs to have an influx of fresh thinking and I’m delighted to welcome Nick Rudd as vice chairman and Chris Harrison who joins the IOA executive. Both Nick and Chris have accumulated a great level of industry experience and will contribute significantly to the thinking of the IOA as we approach our 25th anniversary next year.”

C available on Scorpion 5 commented: “Operating costs have come under constant pressure over recent years so it is clear that anything we can do to help to manage the impact,of what has become the norm rather than a blip in trading conditions, can only be good news. This move will allow operators to be able to provide the best of games from Blueprint, in a cost effective manner in what operators are telling

us are almost toxic trading conditions. “We are making the hugely successful Paddy’s Payday available as the first Scorpion 5 door kit in mid to the end of February. We will then look to make selected newly released games from March onwards available to purchase, post test, in either new Sunlight Cabinet Pluto 6 or Scorpion 5 rebuild or door kit format.”

Cat C £100 upgrades: good business with a hint of caution CAT C

year’s triennial review proved bountiful Lforast Concept Games. “We had an amazing year on our £100 Cat C conversions and rebuilding service,” remarks Diana Garforth. Based in Leeds, the small family-run company designs, manufactures and supplies games primary to the lo-tech AGC sector. But the desire to upgrade to the new jackpot was not as clamorous as some would at first believe. “What we’ve noticed is the transition up to the £100 jackpot growing quite slowly and organically,” says Garforth. “We didn’t see quite the rush of orders that we saw for when £35 jackpot was set.” For Concept, this has been a recurring trend. “The same was true with the £75 jackpot,” Garforth concludes. “The rate of uptake seems to slow incrementally with each decision.”

BACTA to champion coin-op contribution POLITICS

t may be cynical but it’s true. With an election around the corner, both sitting and prospective politicians do their utmost to heed the various causes of their electorate. After all, a receptive ear and promises for action gain traction with voters. This year, by its own admission,BACTA finds itself in tough competition to have its voice heard. “We need to recognise that support of the sector will by nature take a back-seat to wider reaching national concerns,” concedes Simon Storer, BACTA’s new head of communications. It’s not difficult to infer his meaning. NHS cutbacks, pension reform, educational standards and immigration

I

With bigger issues threatening to drown out the sector’s political voice in 2015, BACTA plans to stress the manufacturing and technical achievements of an industry still very much on the cutting edge. will no doubt form the lion’s share of the rhetoric bandied about by electoral front-runners. How best, then, to make the case for increased political sway? “It’s in stressing the contributions the industry makes to the wider UK economy,” responds Storer.“This

is a sector which manufactures domestically, it creates software domestically: it exports, it creates high-end technical, IT, manufacture and engineering jobs - these are aspects that shouldn’t be ignored.” You don’t have to look far to find supporting evidence. The partner company of

V-Hub manufacturers SoundLeisure, SoundNet develop the advanced software underlying the V-Hub’s interface. Truly on the cutting edge within the field, the company’s 2014 launch of its SoundJack application allows remote track selection from smart-phone devices, combined with integrated social media functionality. Sound advanced? It is - what’s more,it’s designed entirely in-house. “We’ve had our own IT team for about nine years now,” Luck remarked. “We did all the development for SoundJack ourselves, and we’ve upcoming tabletbased variant of SoundJack which we’re also developing at the moment.” This remote access design extends to website provision.“We have a range of sites

that provide operators with track selection data and playlist building tools which enables them to make sweeping alterations across an entire estate quickly and efficiently.” This kind of work places Luck and his team squarely within a vibrant and rapidly evolving field, which is reflected in the make-up of his development team. “They’re all young, ” says Luck.“They’re smart: we like to welcome people with a range of new skills.” SoundNet serve as a worthy example of innovation and high-quality job creation, not just within the sector, but on a truly national level. In championing these kind of achievements, BACTA shine a spotlight on a pioneering industry worthy of support.

Building controversy denies Deal seaside facilities RESORTS

Deal amusement arcade operator has expressed A his disappointment that the resort’s former angling club headquarters has been leased without going up for public tender. Mark Woolls, who runs Pier View Amusements, had wanted to turn the building into toilets and changing facilities for holidaymakers.

Instead, it will now be turned into a cafe aimed primarily at cyclists who pass through the resort on National Cycle Route 1. Woolls told the Kent Messenger: “What we wanted to do was turn it

back into toilets and changing rooms, lockers and showers, and we would be happy to pay a rent to the council and maintain it ourselves. “The seafront is getting busier in summer and there’s nowhere for them to change. Most seaside places have these facilities.” “I can’t understand why it hasn’t been put up for tender like the cafe at the end of the pier and the Regent.” The building is owned by Dover District Council, which went ahead unilaterally and leased it to the Platform 1 consortium. A spokesman for the council said:“This did not have to be put out to tender as we are not procuring a service, but are leasing a building. The decision to lease to the Platform 1 consortium was made by cabinet.”

Playnation secures major fouryear deal with Betdigital SERVER BASED GAMES

arket leading FEC and server based game M provider Playnation has finalised a deal with Betdigital which will allow the company to extend its gaming repertoire. The four-year deal will see Playnation broaden its selection of server-based games across the 1,500 locations where the business currently operates. Ryan Collinge, sales director at Playnation, said: “We’re looking forward to building a strong relationship with Betdigital, and are really exited to be able to offer its top performing content to our customers.” Playnation has been a steadily expanding business in the UK since 2013, and currently operates machines in high-profile venues such for brands like Butlins, Haven, Park Resorts, Parkdean, Welcome Break, Moto, Roadchef, Talarius and MFA Bowls. Cummins Allison pledge support for GMD campaign NEW £1 COIN

The Royal Mint’s new pound design may be a necessary protection against fraud, says Cummins Allison UK managing director Andy Crowson, but it will still be a difficult transition for the company’s customer-base. ummins Allison is in close talks with BACTA and the Royal Mint about incorporating the new pound coin, in the hopes of transforming an industry blow into an industry positive. Andy Crowson, the company’s managing director, admitted that while government plans to rework the design could result in more sales for Cummins, it wasn’t such good news for those on the ground. “It is going to be a painful experience for some people, because it’s a neces-

C

sity that they don’t want to fork out for,” said Crowson. “They’d rather spend money on new video games that are going to make them money as opposed to coin sorting mechanisms that are not going to make money but are a vital cog in the machine.” However, with counterfeit features on the pound that remain a closely guarded secret, the coin could save vendors money in the long term by acting as a defence against fraud. “It’s not something that

we exactly welcome,” Crowson explained. “But there’s an on-going problem with the fake pound coins that are out there, and

this is the Royal Mint’s way of dealing with it.” This year, Cummins will be premiering a product - a new version of the Jet Sort machine - and Crowson hopes that customers will see the new coin as an opportunity to invest in some of the latest technology available. “There are probably a lot of people out there who will look to take advantage of a new machine that’s future proofed, rather than relying on a 15-20 year old machine that could be upgraded, but is not going to have a lot of life left in it,” he said. Cummins’ engineering team are already looking at solutions for new coin mechanisms, but until the FEC HARBOUR ARCADE FOR SALE

Royal Mint decide on the pound’s exact dimensions, the company can’t provide details of the process or cost to vendors. “The Royal Mint held a public consultation on the dimensions, which ended in November,” said Crowson. “At the end of the public consultation, they were going to make their decision and then the announcement would follow - so I don’t think we have long to wait.” Until that time, the company is in close talks with AVEX and BACTA, and is backing a temporary reduction of Gaming Machine Duty to ease the financial stress of the transition. “BACTA’s idea sounds like a good one,”said Crowson. “We would wholeheartedly support that because it counterbalances the fact that people are being forced into a situation where they have to spend money they wouldn’t otherwise choose to spend. “Whether the government are going to do that or not, we don’t know, but BACTA can certainly count on our support,” he added. presenting a business opportunity for keen amusements industry entrepreneurs. A family entertainment centre in Scarborough’s well-known harbour is currently up for sale as a going concern. It’s director David Robinson attributes this success to a wider industry trend of arcades shifting to an FEC focus.“What we’ve encountered a great deal is arcade operators who originally approached us looking to our rides as a means towards a secondary income saying,‘You’re balancing the books for us,we’d like another, newer set.” Robinson attributes underlying legislative and economic challenges behind this trend. “Obviously its been difficult for some time now for arcades to compete in cash markets,” he comments. But then Robinson also attributes the continuing success of the family sector to a cultureshift borne out of the recession. “In people having to tighten their belts in other areas,I think that’s driven the creation of greater family unity,” he says. “People are looking for a lowcost source of enjoyment which can last all afternoon and not break the bank.” refill key allows operators to automatically recharge the machine, see the accounting and disable the banknote recycler if necessary. The Smart Easy change machine is designed to reload with different coin denominations by simply emptying the hopper case, reducing the time of interventions in the field. All programming operations can be made directly on the machine, using its display and two practical external buttons.

What Moyle did come away with, however, were two of the show’s most impressive video offerings: Jurassic Park and Mario Kart. “We didn’t go to EAG to buy video, but when we saw what was on offer we thought it was rude not to,”Moyles explains, citing the appeal of both product franchises.“As there’s a new Jurassic Park film due out this summer the timing will work out well - past experience with the Lost World rides bears this out - as for Mario Kart, the brand is gaming royalty and instantly recognisable to players.” Moyle believes that this

licensed ‘hook-in’ will particularly strike a chord with younger users.“From the video perspective, branded material like Mario Kart gets that instant recognition from a generation of kids who’ve grown up with console gaming at home,” he said. Whilst the growth of console gaming has nodoubt contributed to the demise of video-arcading since its heyday in the 1970’s and 80’s, Moyle sees both as distinctly different mediums. “The niche of the arcade is the atmosphere,” he commented. “It’s the size of the machine, the fact that you can sit in that creates a wow-factor unlike any other gaming experience.”

After a strong showing at EAG last week, change machine solutions provider GeWeTe is now looking to further cement its place in the British coin-op market at ICE. he opening of the new Dreamland amusement park in Margate will be just one factor in the creation of over a half a million new tourism jobs over the next decade according to VisitEngland. The tourism association said much of this growth would come from people continuing to take more trips and holidays at home, with domestic tourism currently accounting for over 70 per cent of all spending. During the recession tourism has been an engine of growth, with holiday spending at home by Brits jumping by 24 per cent between 2008 and 2013,and overseas visitor spend growing by 29 per cent over the same period. The forecast follows hot on the heels on research from VisitBritain that anticipates a 4.5 per cent increase in inbound tourism spend to £22.2bn in 2015. There is a cornucopia of stunning events and anniversaries falling this year which we’d expect to drive up visitor numbers right across the country. “All this with a tailwind of growing consumer confi-

dence and a falling oil price, which cuts the cost of leisure travel, makes us optimistic for a busy year of welcoming more visitors from home and abroad.” The Dreamland heritage amusement park is due to provide Margate with a lift when it opens in its latest incarnation in Easter this year. One of 2015’s biggest tourism events will be the Rugby World Cup in September, which is expected to contribute almost £1bn to the economy during six weeks of games across 10 cities. Other notable occasions include the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta, the 50th anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill’s death, the bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo, 150 years since the

publication of Alice in Wonderland and the 125th anniversary of Agatha Christie’s birth. In order to capitalise on the many tourism events, VisitEngland will run a number of campaigns to make the most of what is expected to be a vintage year for English tourism. Helen Grant, minister for tourism, welcomed the predictions for 2015:“The continued success of UK tourism is fantastic news, driving growth and supporting 2.6m jobs in England alone. “Our tourism strategy is working and is a vital part of the government’s long term economic plan.We are committed to keeping up this momentum and doing all we can to help an industry that is predicted to double in size over the next decade.”

AMUSEMENT PARKS

lackpool Pleasure Beach is anticipating a B big 2015 ahead after its results for the last financial year showed a significant improvement in the amusement park’s performance. Parent company Blackpool Pleasure Beach Holdings said the attraction had “seen improvement”, with turnover rising from £25.3m to £25.89m and a reduction in pre-tax losses from £2.55m to £1.87m. Although footfall remained static, the firm attributed the upturn for the year ending March 2014 to better weather during the 2013 season. A spokesman for the firm explained: “The period saw an improvement in turnover and expenditure levels plus a reduction in the level of losses compared with the financial year ending

March 2012. “Attendance levels remained at a similar level to the previous year, a reflection of the economic climate and individual disposable income of our visitors. “This year we are confident that a new strategy focused on pricing and marketing will address the economic factors affecting the business which, combined with our investment programme, gives us confident optimism for the future”. Overall company results, which include the Big Blue Hotel and South Shore Mutual Insurance Company, as well as the amusement park, saw its losses narrow to £397,000 compared with £1.5m for the year before, when Blackpool had been plagued by unfavourable weather.

Turnover rose marginally to £30.3m from £30.2m for the same period the year before, while gross profit also increased from £11.5m to £12.6m. The company made no significant capital expenditure in 2013/14 and will not recommend paying out a dividend to shareholders. What was described as a “challenging year” for the Big Blue Hotel saw its turnover fall to £3.8m, down from £4m the year before, and its pre-tax profit decline from £744,000 to £690,000. The group said since that since March 2014 attendances had gone up 11 per cent - a rate it hoped to boost further with the opening of a new ride in Spring this year. The £2m Red Arrows Sky Force ride is a collaboration between Blackpool Pleasure Beach and the famous aerobatic display team, the first of its kind at any amusement park around the world. Complete in Red Arrows livery, the 72ft high, 12seat white-knuckle ride will take guests on a 360degree tour of the skies, all within the shadow of the world famous Big One rollercoaster.

Bowling alley a success

Mecca Bingo has registered its objection to the proposed regeneration of Croydon town centre by developer Westfield/Hammerson. Not surprising, given that a restrictive covenant prevents the land targeted for the £1.5bn scheme from being used for playing bingo.

The owner of a new 14-lane bowling alley in Aylesbury has declared its first month in business as an ‘amazing success’. Aidan Kirwin, of Rogue Bowling, which opened on December 6, said: “We’ve had a really great start to trading and a great start to the business.”

Cinema complex work underway

Greene King has said it expects to complete its £760m acquisition of rival pubco Spirit in the first half of this year. Greene King CEO Rooney Anand said it was working with the Competition and Markets Authority to ensure a smooth transition.

Work to build a multimillion pound cinema, hotel and restaurant development in Darlington has begun. This week ground was finally broken for the £30m development, which is hoped will help regenerate the North-East town when it opens next March.

BEER DUTY

Brigid Simmonds of the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) argues that a third cut in beer duty would bolster the economy and create a brighter future for both pub goers and landlords. he BBPA’s Brigid Simmonds has pressed MPs to support a Parliamentary motion urging a lowering of beer duty in the forthcoming March Budget to support struggling pubs and breweries. Early Day Motion (EDM) 625 - the bill calling for further reductions in beer duty - was drafted by MP Andrew Griffiths and has already secured the support of 44 MPs across six different parties. Following two successive tax cuts in the 2013 and 2014 Budgets, Early Day Motion 625“urges the Government to consider a further cut in beer duty in the 2015 Budget which

T

would secure pub jobs, help keep pub pints affordable and support Britain’s much-loved pubs.” As the largest representative body for pub owners and brewers in the UK, the BBPA is one of the major campaigning forces in the industry. Chief executive Simmonds has called for BPPA members, and those in favour of an unprecedented third cut in beer duty,to write to their MPs asking them to support the motion. In her letter to MPs, Simmonds wrote:“Beer duty is now 13 per cent lower than under the tax rises previously planned, directly resulting in millions of pounds of new invest-

ment in Britain’s pubs and breweries and boosting jobs in the sector by over 16,000.” Despite consuming just 12% of beer sold in the EU, beer drinkers in the UK pay around 40% of all beer duty across the continent, reflecting Britain’s higher rates of taxation on the product. The letter to MPs argued that, as well as boosting the economy and the pub industry, a reduction in beer duty would benefit hard working customers with competitive drinks prices. Brigid Simmonds commented: “Andrew Griffiths campaigns tire-

lessly for Britain’s beer and pubs, and we should all urge our MPs to support his Early Day Motion.” Although EDM’s are unlikely to be debated in Parliament, creating such a motion will often help to rally support for a specific campaign. In this case, Simmonds hopes that backbenchers will write to the Chancellor ahead of the March Budget. “I hope as many MPs as possible will join calls for a third beer duty cut in this year’s Budget,” she said.“We can create new jobs and boost the economy, as well as keeping a pint in the pub as affordable as we can.”

Plans unveiled for £450m leisure resort THEME PARK

disused theme park in Scotland could soon be transA formed into a £450m leisure complex and holiday destination spanning 610-acres. Plans for the two-phase Loudoun Castle Project, which were submitted to East Ayrshire Council by private investment firm EIF, contain proposals for 450 holiday lodges and a 6,500sqm

leisure complex with an indoor water park. The 19th century castle on the site would be converted into a hotel, with additional indoor sports buildings, a distillery and a spa are also included in the plans. Subject to council approval, work would go ahead in 2016 with an aim of finishing the project for 2018. In addition to creat-

ing 1,000 during construction, there would also be approximately 1,500 permanent leisure and retail jobs after completion. Project chairman David Mace told the BBC:“A development of this size and scale will provide Scotland and Ayrshire with significant long-term economic benefits both in terms of jobs and tourism.”

of its i360 tower get underway. Eleanor Harris, chief executive of the Brighton i360 project, this week told The Argus newspaper that work on the 530ft (162m) observation tower would begin later in the year, with the ‘cans’ that build up the tower scheduled to arrive on Brighton beach in June. “If 2014 was all about moving from concept to reality, 2015 is about moving from the ground up into the sky - our tower will become a very real presence on the Brighton seafront this year,” she explained. Brighton Council has called the £46.2m project the ‘cornerstone to funding the regeneration of Brighton’s seafront’. Discussing the impact of the development on Brighton, the Council said in a statement that it expects the i360 to attract more than 700,000 additional tourists to the south coast city, and add up to £25m in additional revenue annually. The i360 is expected to open in 2016.

EAG 2015: A familyfriendly show

EAG EXPO 2015

ExCeL London was replete with family and amusement titles last week, with a noticeable focus upon the social elements of adult gaming. EAG continued to make its mark, more robustly with the new VAE at its side. Chris Webster explains the new directions and opportunities on offer in the Docklands affair. s the biggest UK trade show coin-op has to offer, EAG provides as good a crosssection of both the health and character of the industry as one could wish for. Pertaining the former, EAG 2015 seemed to hint towards cautious but nevertheless tangible optimism. For some, footfall was noted as a cause of slight disappointment but then, give us a show where footfall has never been an issue.Though figures from the organisers are yet to be released, several exhibitors intimidated that visitor numbers were down on last year. But EAG is trading itself less on numbers and more on quality of late - it’s about buyers and business. Which explains why there seemed to be little to

dampen the level of business actually being conducted on the trade-floor. Indeed, the pedigree of the clientele was remarked upon universally across all three show days. Regarding the latter - the apparent course of the industry - few could fail to notice the predominately family and amusement-orientated character of the show. Kids rides fared particularly well - a development partly explained by way of clement weather in 2014, providing seaside and outdoor operators with greater means to invest. Video was also extremely well represented on both manufacturer and supplier stands, hinting at an uplift in a sector which in the past decade has been regarded

with a certain degree of pessimism. The growth of videoredemption - a growing market domestically but one already firmly established in the United States - was also evident: the logical evolution of the cashbox-friendly redemption experience with a videogaming element unlike anything players are able to receive at home. But then what of the cash gaming sector? It is true that the continued diminishment of adult gaming floorspace has been an observable trend at EAG in recent years. With the ongoing tribulations of the UK pub industry as well as challenging (and, some might add, unjust) competition from alternative gambling markets, it’s a tough

market to succeed in. To this end,the nature of the gaming machines that did display at EAG is noteworthy. Community games were core products on several stands - from large-scale manufacturers to family businesses. Cat C titles outnumbered higher stake and prize B3 machines. The creation of amusement, rather than the lure of the hefty jackpot, seemed to be central to all exhibitors involved. With a plethora of parties, some competitors, some allies, it’s difficult to attribute one overarching theme to EAG 2015. But perhaps if the show could speak for itself with one cohesive mouthpiece, it would surmise itself thus: “Leave the hard-gambling to others, let’s help people have fun.”

a throwback to Astra’s initial outset. “We instigated community gaming with things like Bullion Bars years ago and were the market-leaders in that sector,” he explained. “In the intervening years, we’ve moved away from that and allowed competitors to pull ahead of us in the field.” But that, it seems, will soon change: with their latest title, Rogers is confident in regaining the community mantle for Astra. “Space Kings represents us getting back to our roots,” he said. “It’s the community-style kind of game that people love playing.”

“Last November we took our national finals back to Blackpool, and it was a tremendous success,”commented the Association’s Ken Hussey.“We had thirty-five pool tables in the Norbreck Hotel, and we’ll certainly be returning there this coming November.” Whilst the current business environment is challenging, Hussey seemed confident that long-term,pool would remain an important feature within the British pub. “As an association we’re still going strong,” he remarked.“I think pool still very much has a place within the pub sector:it appeals to all demographics, and as such I think it’s future is secure.”

COMMISSION THERAPY iven the role of the Gambling CommisG sion as a regulator, shows

THE EARLY BIRD GETS THE WORM Dean Harding, managing director of Crown Leisure, repositioning to an earlier period in the calenFdarorEAG’s proved beneficial.

such as EAG are important to create a human connection, explained machines sector specialist Nigel Owens: “We have a stand which is there whenever people want to speak to us. It’s there just for the point of contact and it’s not so much the exhibitors, although they may pop over to talk to us, it’s the visitors. Because they’ll often be

our licence holders.” In fact, said Owens, there are things operators have to get off their chests that they may not wish to do over the phone. “Although they’ve always got a contact via phone or email. They’ll save up their questions and come up, and pour their hearts out and we take note of what they’ve saying, jot their numbers down and take note of any themes that are cropping up.”

“EAG kick-starts the year for us in a big way,” he declared.“We speak to our customers at the beginning of the year, and they want to see our new products right away, so for me an early start in the year is a good thing.” For Harding, the make-up of the Crown Leisure stand indicated wider sector trends. “If you look at our stand, it’s about 25 per cent gambling-gaming related and 75 per cent family orientated,” he said.“Whilst we’ve had some great reaction to all our adult-gaming product irrespective of manufacturer or designer, I think this is a fair-reflection of the outlook for our business activity in the coming year.”

FUTURE LOGIC

WITH EYES ON FOREIGN SHORES ne of the centre-pieces of the EAG show floor was the Harry Levy stand, which bustled throughout the O three days of exhibition.“We’ve been very busy,” said commercial director Matthew Deith.“We’re very pleased with how things have gone.” He was clear as to the areas of the company’s future expansion. “Redemption’s a growing business and cranes are performing very well, and that’s reflected in our showing this year.” Meanwhile, Harry Levy’s manufacturing and design reputation also permits for a growing export trade.“As pushers are prohibited in many foreign territories,”Deith explained,“going forward we’ll be looking to grow into both the US and UAE markets with a variety of different product types.”

GEWETE

INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY

A GROWING DEMAND FOR TITO auselmann cash-handling solution subsidiary GeWeTe saw a bustling trade at this year’s event. G“We’ve been non-stop morning to evening, with a good deal of interest from new customers,” said Mark Edmundson, the company’s UK sales manager. Edmundson identified a particular area of increased demand within his growing client-base.“We’re seeing more and more interest in TITO provision,” he said.“Our TITO based core-product is particularly popular because of its versatility: it brings all the cash elements seen in what were once single-standing units into one, easy-touse machine.”

SUCCESSFUL START FOR INNOVATIVE THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT his year was Future Logic’s first EAG showing since its September 2014 takeover by US competitor JCM TGlobal. “There’s a great deal of consolidation going on across the global sector as a whole,” commented Rob Wheeler, director of project management for Future Logic Europe. “Whilst Future Logic is the de facto leader in the thermal printing business which drives TITO products: JCM are the market leaders in bill and ticket validators,” he explained.“Bringing the two together creates a natural synergy and allows both to be better fit for business going forwards.”

nnovative Technology got 2015 underway in style at EAG. The company took out its largest ever stand to Idisplay a wide range of products and launched its subsidiary InnoPrint to the industry. InnoPrint’s development director, Chris Robinson said: “After nearly two years of robust development, it is great to finally introduce our products to the amusement Industry. EAG was the perfect platform for our first official outing. It was fantastic to receive such a profound interest in the products that we have worked so hard to develop. As a group ITL is now able to provide a comprehensive range of cash handling solutions; including validators, recyclers and printing products.”

n the run up to the show, there’s been no mistaking that JNC Sales was very confident in the potential of its new kidcentric arcade ride, Go Go Pony. And just a few hours into the first day of the show, that confidence had been clearly vindicated. “We’ve done some great deals here today,” said technical director, Tom Clarke, who believed

that its success may be down to the unique spot it occupies in the amusement sector. “In most of the amusement arcades with a lot of the equipment customers want to buy for soft play centres, there’s nothing for the kids 4 or below,” he said. “I think you can play this from probably two upwards and there’s not a lot of machines that children that young can play.”

he quality of attendee at this year’s EAG impressed Alex Kirby, sales manager at NSM Music. T“We’ve been very busy,”he said.“The customers we’ve been seeing have been of exceptional calibre.” The company’s tablet-based Icon: Background Music system continues to prove popular with customers. “Icon: BGM has performed fantastically for us,” said Kirby.“We’ve just launched a new multi-zone feature, allowing one tablet to control music across four different areas in a venue at the same time.” For Kirby, the application of this kind of product is multi-faceted.“The appeal of this sort of Icon:BGM isn’t limited to bars, pubs or clubs,”he remarked.“We’ve been enjoying real interest from the retail sector: beauty salons, hair dressers: anywhere where music selection enriches the customer experience.”

BRITISH RIDES AT THEIR BEST Kiddy Rides’Wendy Townsend, helping to bolster reputation of British manufacturing is an imporFtantorthepart of her philosophy.“Our rides are all manufactured in the UK,”she confirmed.“I think it’s important to get trade and industry and manufacturing back into the UK. Not just in this industry but in every industry. Everything’s just been shipped out.” The company has enjoyed a successful licensed ride tie-up with kids TV show Peppa Pig, but still understands the benefits of generic rides.“I think generic rides are important because you’ve got more freedom,” said Townsend.“Like with the Big Red Bus, you’ve got freedom to add things, to take them away. Where with a licence you’ve got to do what they want you to do. it’s got to look like they want it to look.”

ing a priority of new and retro pinball machines as a way of attracting customers young and old. “Barcades have come over from the states,” said Pinball Heaven director, Phil Palmer, “which have retro games, because it appeals to a whole new market. It talks to people more my age and to the 20 years olds that want to play retro games. We had someone at the stand yesterday who’s opening a coffee shop and he’s putting six pinball machines in.” Also on the horizon is the possibility to redemptioninfused pinball machines and Pinball Heaven’s latest offering, The Wizard of Oz, was an example of just that at EAG.

Born out of an alliance between Pontypool director Shane Myers and Daniel Villa of Mexico’s Advanced Technology Research, the Arion Brie jukebox made a successful showing at EAG. “Since it’s launch it’s been going from strength to strength,” Myers explained. The box allows for sector differential play: allowing end users to stream different music to specific parts of a venue, a feature his customers find particularly appealing. “It’s also priced right,” adds Villa. “The next six months will see us launch a whole new rethink of the concept of the jukebox - and in terms of pricing, I don’t think anyone will be able to match us.”

BACTA CHARITABLE TRUST MAKING A DIFFERENCE BACTA’s laudable charity commitments were on full display at EAG 2015, with both the BACTA Bikers and chosen charity, Rays of Sunshine, on hand to discuss with visitors and exhibitors ways that they can continue to raise money for good causes. The show included the presentation of a motorised wheelchair from the Bikers to a young man with cerebral palsy. Prominent members Mick Clokie and Murray Macdougall (pictured, left and right) were granted the honour of leading the ceremony. A spokeswoman from Rays of Sunshine revealed that the trade body had together raised over £100,000 for the wish granting charity, with the likes of RLMS’s Tony Glanville and BACTA CEO John White both set to raise money through sporting challenges in the coming months. CONCEPT GAMES SMALL IN NUMBER, BIG IN SCOPE Although few in number, the staff of Concept Games develop all of the company’s technology in-house, and have even created a cashless-add on system for the lotech arcade sector. Its EAG 2015 outing comes after massive success in 2014 by way of its £100 Cat C conversion and rebuild service. “What we’re finding is that Cat C’s are giving B3’s a run for their money” said Diana Garforth, one of the company’s directors. “I think it forms an attractive middle-ground,” she explained. “Whilst £100 is a big jackpot, the £1 stake involved isn’t intimidating and doesn’t alienate players.”

REFLEX ON A ROLL

NEW YEAR, NEW TECH

We’ve been very fortunate over 2014,” explained Reflex Gaming’s Quentin Stott. The manufacturer came into this year’s show with an unparalleled level of momentum, having launched a number of new machines in the months preceding its trip to the ExCeL. “I think we’re getting into our stride with what we’re doing with the pub retail sector,” said Stott, “and we feel like we’re

able now to start spreading our wins and varying game styles.” This has been reflected in the company’s most recent releases, many of which are at various stages of retailer testing. Chill Con Carnage, Treble Top, Showtime and a new ten-game video compendium, Royal 100 are all in the preparation stages for a full launch in early 2015 and all were making an impact on the Reflex stand this year.

ames designer and manufacturer Project Design & Technology utilised its stand to showcase two of its G latest products. “We’ve had a great response on our new

REGAL AMUSEMENTS MAKING A SUPERNOVA he Regal Amusements stand was dedicated solely to the vibrant pink machines of Supernova Games. Key Tamong them the newly released Skill Ball Zingy 2, a follow up to the company’s hugely successful 2012 SWP. This new version features twice the number of boards featured on the original, while promising the same popular core gameplay that awards up to a £50 jackpot. Regal also played host to a number of other popular Supernova titles, including the crossbow wielding Return to Pharaoh’s Gold.

CREATING A DIGITAL RESOURCE ith continued strong performance and investment in the redemption sector, the stand of the aptlyW named Redemption Software Company’s found receptive audience at this year’s show. “On its most basic level, the software we provide is a stock management tool,” explained sales executive Kevin McCarthy. “Along with the obvious security benefits this provides, it also gives operators a continuous backlog of data and reports on the kind of products that are proving popular and when they were redeemed - providing an excellent resource of data for future purchasing and planning decisions.”

The star of the show for Electrocoin this year was undoubtedly Bar X. After relaunching the famous gaming brand last year, it was no surprise to discover that the company’s stand featured a range of machines based on the classic original. Some more than most, with a special cabinet design created especially to evoke the legacy style machines in which Bar X made its name. The simply named Bar X provided a combination of classic design with new technology proved to be very popular on the show floor. A range of other machines, including Bar-Xtra, a first venture into the Hi tec arena for the brand, were also attracting attention from visitors across the three-day event.

The ongoing focus on social responsibility within the industry was typified by the EAG presence of GamCare, the UK’s leading provider of support to problem gamblers. “We aim to work closely with the industry, so it’s important for us to have a presence at EAG - and for operators to be fully aware of GamCare and our services,” commented Theresa Tunstall, head consultant of industry services. “Working together we can promote responsible attitudes to gambling, and raise awareness about the help that is available for problem gambling.”

PMS INTERNATIONAL GROUP RENAISSANCE FOR CLASSICS AT PMS PMS International once again attended EAG with a dizzying array of toys and arcade merchandise in tow, with many of the world’s most popular characters represented in the aisles of the company’s 2015 stand. Among the new arrivals for this year was Paddington Bear. “The film has lifted the profile of the brand,” said buyer Steven Beverley. “A lot of youngsters didn’t know Paddington,” he continued, “but now they do and the toys have been really good for us.” PMS has also returned to another old British favourite, in the form of Bagpuss. “It’s a new line for us,” explained Beverley, “but we’re getting interested from both arcades and retail.”

PLATFORM TO SUCCESS mid a market increasingly looking to expand into the family sector, SB Machines put in a strong A showing at this year’s EAG.

BEST OF REDEMPTION ON SHOW a trend that swept across much of EAG, the RLMS Sales stand made redemption pieces a promiFnentollowing addition to its range of leading gaming machines. This was no coincidence, with this popular form of FEC entertainment continuing to grow across the country. Among RLMS’s most impressive showpieces was Fishbowl frenzy, which places a 65 inch display that has had its back removed over a traditional bagatelle style game. “You can have all the animations and the fishbowls on the front to give you a 3D effect,” explained the company’s Martyn Allsop.“I’d say that this year we’ve definitely got more redemption,” he added. The latest wave of fruit machines were still a vital component of RLMS’s offering, however, including the likes of Gold Vault Streak from Astra Games, a new Cat C title launched during late 2014.

“I’ve been really delighted with the results of the show,” said director Paolo Sidoli. “Increasingly, operators are turning their amusement arcades into FEC’s, which require a broader appeal of equipment.” The company’s stand showcased a number of sales front-runners from last year, as well as brand new imports fresh of the production lines in the Modena region of northern Italy. “This is our most important show of the year,” Sidoli continued. “It’s a platform with which we build our business of the forthcoming months.”

SHOW-STEALING SEGA: VIDEO’S NOT DEAD call Sega’s EAG 2015 impressive would Tbe ostand an understatement. Replete with video, redemption and videmption titles, it formed one of the main attractions of the entire event. “We’ve had a busy two days full of trade”said Justin Burke, general manager sales and marketing at Sega Amusements. For Burke, Sega’s latest

video releases Showdown and Transformers: Human Alliance give the lie to belief in the demise of video-arcading.“Video isn’t dead,it’s just evolved,” he commented. “Console and PC gaming is a completely different experience to a good arcade title,” he said.“We’re able to provide a more communal experience along with the kind of specialist hardware you just can’t get at home.”

“It still works for us,” said SAM Leisure’s Liam Barrett of this year’s EAG. “It’s the one time of year that you can get to see all the major guys. So for our product it’s important to have the product here. It’s a good shop window and we always get a few tipples and we always see a few people we’ve never seen. I’m happy.” Of particular interest to visitors this year was Neuron Race, a reaction-testing competitive game with a striking visual style. “A few have been out on test and they’ve worked quite well in the entertainment centres,” said Barrett. “I think now as more people have seen it we’ve sold a few, but also some of the major players are now going to go back and think about what to use it for.”

he focus was on consolidation this year for Sound 015 marked the first EAG at which Suzo-Happ were Leisure, as they prepared to roll out new features to the 2 able to display Comestro Group wares under its own Tthousands of its jukeboxes already on site around the coun- umbrella of products. This having been the first edition try. “We’ve had a good show, but this year’s more of a consolidation because we’ve got HD video in preparation for more sites going on video,”said Sound Leisure’s Chris Black. He noted that the show had been quieter than last year, but attributed that in part to consolidation in the industry. “There’s fewer people to physically come,” he said, “because companies are getting bigger and one customer comes round rather than four because they’ve all been taken over.”

of the show since Suzo acquired the Group during 2014. This development paid immediate financial dividends at the show, as UK sales director, John Vallis explained: “It’s the first year we’ve shown Comestro’s new range of change machines as part of the Suzo-Happ family and it’s been very encouraging. We’ve actually taken orders at the show, which we weren’t expecting to do.” One particular Comestro offering was making playing a important role at the show.“The RM5 Coin Acceptor has gone down very well as well,” explained Vallis.“If you look at the stands, with a lot of the video redemption, there’s a lot of them already out there and the customer feedback has been very good.”

ALL THEIR OWN WORK of the software-platform which Phasroviders helped SoundLeisure’s VenueHub digital jukebox achieve wide-spread success, SoundNet’s digital innovation exemplifies the forward-looking face of the industry. “We did all the development for our SoundJack application ourselves,” explained the company’s director James Luck. “We have an upcoming tabletbased variant of SoundJack which we’re also developing at the moment.” This remote access design extends to web-

site provision. “We have a range of sites that provide operators with track selection data and playlist building tools,” he continued, “which enables them to make sweeping alterations across an entire estate quickly and efficiently.” This kind of work places Luck and his team squarely within a vibrant and rapidly evolving field, which is reflected in the make-up of his development team. “They’re all young, ” he said. “They’re smart: we like to welcome people with a range of new skills.”

Sweet Amanda’s, a candy vending monolith recently arrived from the United States, took up the central portion of the UDC display.“It isn’t really traditional coin-op equipment, it’s a vending machine,”said head of IT and creative, Matt Bland. “But,” he added, “it’s an amazing vending machine.” Fresh redemption machines such as Fishbowl Frenzy and the company’s Slim-Line change machines also formed an integral part of the company’s offering for 2015, explained newly appointed sales executive,Gregg Smythe (pictured, right).

Exhibitors at EAG may not be swarmed by the hordes of visitors they experienced in the days of larger cross-industry shows, but for redemption ticket experts Syndicate UK, that’s just the way it should be. “My perspective is that’s it’s a smaller show, but I find this better for us because the products that we manufacture and supply is to the niche market around the leisure industry,” said sales director, Jim Dunne. “It’s less volume of people but it’s must better for us because our penetration of orders is a lot higher.” On the subject of growth in the wider redemption sector, Dunne can only say that Syndicate themselves are going through a purple patch. “Redemption is continuing to grow for us,” he agreed, “but may be taking it off the market share. However, we’re gaining.”

hris Skelly, managing director of Newbury-based suppliersWessex Coin, came to the show with the weight of experience behind him. “This is the company’s fortieth trading year,”he noted. “That goes a long way in explaining how we continue to expand.” Skelly highlighted the addition of a new manufacturer to the Wessex stand.“Recently we expanded our sales team, which has allowed us to sell the latest titles from 24 Seven Gaming,” he remarked.“It’s a big part of what we do - building the right team to keep business going in the right direction.”

around a television screen at Whitehouse Leisure. On the screen, trailers and clips from the upcoming Minions film were showing, with an entire collection of yellow creatures clad in caveman costumes lining the surrounding shelves. But business development director Ian Whitting-

ham said there was more in the range to be excited about, as the company launched its new Anna and Elsa toys from Disney’s Frozen after securing permission from licensors. “What we’ve found with developing all of the plush of late is that customers aren’t just looking for an item in isolation,” said Whittingham. “They’re looking for an entire collection.”

DOING BRISK TRADE urham-based family-ride providers World of Rides fared particularly well at EAG 2015.“I’d most cerD tainly describe this show as the most successful we’ve had since the onset of the recession,” said the company’s general manager David Robinson. Selling over sixty kiddy animal rides on the first day alone, Robinson attributed part of this success to the strength of the 2014 summer season.“The weather last year provided a great boost to family amusement sector,” he remarked.“What I think we’ve seen this year is an operator-base with the means to invest.”

RLMS buoyed by journey into the Vortex Marcus Sheehan of Birthday Blaster, the company behind F5 Vortex, discusses the origins of the party game and what it’s like to work with national distributor RLMS. Q: How did the idea for the original Vortex emerge? A: I first saw the concept at my son’s birthday party in the form of an inflatable ticket booth. I realised from watching lots of children playing and collecting tickets that there was tremendous fun to be had. I saw the concept again in America, this time it was a machine from Chuck E Cheese Entertainment who had created a ticket booth that was used for birthday parties. But in this case it was only the child celebrating the birthday that got to have a go. The other children attending could only watch. So the idea was born to create a fully automated ticket booth that would allow all the children to pay and play.

Q

Q: Can you describe the process involved in making a coin-op version of Vortex? A: I always wanted Vortex to make the transition to coin-op, but we needed to go through a steep learning curve with aspects like the air-flow. It’s easy to assume that it’s just a simple case of blowing some tickets around a booth, but it’s more scientific than that. Primarily, it had to be risk-free for kids to enter and play safely without the need to wear eye protection.Another challenge was what was to be done with the uncollected tickets at the end of each play. We had to work out how to safely remove those waste tickets and what to do with them. And that’s where most of the development time was invested. We came up with a system whereby the booth manages those uncaught tickets to add value to the game. Those that are not caught are retained and at a certain point a number of them are dropped back into what we call a ‘jackpot round’.At that point we don’t take those

Black Hole, one of the newest additions, is a true celebration of skill combined with a thrilling light show. Taking total control, the player must tug the plunger to release the ball and win the jackpot. The gaming experience is enhanced by the dancing LED lights as the ball circles the machine and players wait on tenterhooks for the outcome. Just under 2m tall, with a depth and tickets away, allowing the customer to win those tickets that others have missed. That width of approximately 1m, Black Hole makes a striking impression and adds a development took us around six months. fresh dimension to the arcade setting. Q: What steps have you taken to ensure that F5 Vortex can withstand the rigours of operational life? A: For manufacturing we use polycarbonate for the windows and doors because it’s virtually indestructible. In the event that EVEN SMARTER players are unhappy with the experience VALIDATION they can get out of the booth by simply pressing the exit button which shuts down the machine and opens the exit door. fter a successful run with a range of ‘twin’ products last year, it’s not surA prising that SB Machines are doubling up once more with some of its latest launches for 2015. Twin rides use a clever new format, which allows operators to run two independently functioning figures on the same ride. Over the past twelve months, operators have been drawn to these twin rides for their minimal impact on space and energy costs, as well as the fact that they can double up on revenue. Topping SB Machines’ list of twin rides are favourites such as Twin Motorbikes, Twin Planes and the carousel-themed Twin Ponies, although young film fanatics will undoubtedly opt for the newly released twin version of Disney Cars.

Business is master It’s all about timing - or time in this case. With EAG delivering another slick edition, Joe Ewens asks whether a fully focussed VAE will stop the 2 day talk? eturning to the ExCeL I detected notes of optimism that were lacking in 2014.The industry’s honesty is something to prize very highly, so you have to pay attention when people say they’ve got reasons for cheer. Ultimately, a show lives or dies on whether business is being done and a number of suppliers I spoke to had made surprise sales and number of operators had made purchases they were not expecting. Shows are expensive for exhibitors to attend and there will always be the question of whether reducing costs by cut-

R

ting a day would be of benefit to the industry. The answer rests on whether the deals done on the final day could be compressed into a two-day event. It may well be the fledgling VAE which permanently banishes the naysayers. With a full year to organise its second show, and the prospect of tempting companies away from Leisure Industry Week, a bustling companion show may well make the stream of visitors heading to the ExCeL simply too much to possibly contain in less than the full three-day run time.

The right people, the right place

EAG launched the year in standard fashion, imbuing a sense of confidence among the ranks of the industry. Chris Webster argues that this launch could well be a platform for better results - especially in May wo things hit home from EAG last week;and they may both be crucial assets carrying into 2015. Firstly, the industry remains remarkably tight-knit.Second,and equally important, EAG was a living reminder that we appear to have entered a providential time. After what seems to have been one of the most challenging periods coin-op has yet to face,a distinct positivism was pervasive across most stands.Suppliers, manufacturers and utilities providers alike were all

doing business.Again and again,we were told:“the right people have shown up,” “the decision-makers have come.”And that’s all well and good - but what these statements effectively translate to is -“the people with money came, and they spent.” Now that seems to be the crux of the matter - the calling card for future growth and development across the sector. And an industry combined at election time:now wouldn’t that be nice if we all spoke with one voice?

Inspiring ideas and shared solutions: let’s get chatting Trade shows are not just about buying and selling; they’re also about meeting and greeting. Luckily for newcomers, EAG is informal enough get the ball rolling. So what did EAG virgin Imogen Goodman think? he monolithic warehouse that is the ExCel building is hard enough to navigate at the best of times, but it’s even more of a labyrinth for a newcomer to EAG, attempting to navigate the flashing lights, voluptuous plush and fruit machine jingles. For those of us lucky enough to escape our stalls for a wander around, though, it became clear that even for second-timers there was already a warm and familiar atmosphere. Most people eschewed the awkward name-badge glances in favour of a friendly handshake and a quick

T

catch-up. In fact, it was a timely reminder of how important trade shows are for an industry that still has people at its heart. With concern rising about the new pound coin, it was particularly heartening to bump into BACTA chairman John White on the same afternoon that a representative from the Royal Mint stopped by the stall. The informal atmosphere of EAG seemed like the perfect place to stimulate discourse across different sectors of the industry - let’s just hope these productive discussions continue well into the year.

joe ewens media watch erseyside’s first Pound Pub has M opened it’s doors, reports the Liverpool Echo. Half pints are available from £1 and pints from £1.50, as the former Cuffs Bar on High Street, Wavertree becomes the fourth Pound Pub in the country. The Echo spoke to Mike Dring, who has run this venue for the last six years with his wife, Dorothea, as they were preparing for the big switch. Mike stressed: “It’s not a pound a pint as some people seem to think. And it’s not all about cheap beer because we are selling non-alcoholic drinks at £1. It’s a no frills business, that’s the best way to describe it. There will be no Sky Sports, karaoke or DJs which a lot of pubs round here have.” Mike, who is hoping to attract more students to the pub, added: “We are not trying to encourage alcoholism or binge-drink-

ing. It’s about people who might only have £10 being able to have a good night out. We know money is tight and people are on a budget, while this is not a high income area.” Other Pound Pubs – which are run by Here For Your Hospitality of Leigh, Greater Manchester – operate in Atherton, Greater Manchester, Stockton on Tees and Newark in Nottinghamshire. Joe White, operations manager with Here For Your Hospitality, said: “All our other openings have gone well so we are hoping for a busy first day.” Regarding concerns the business could encourage irresponsible drinking, he added: “You can drink at home cheaper than you can in a pub, and you are not monitored. Here there are people to say ‘You’ve had enough’.” Mike Wardell, director of

Here For Your Hospitality, meanwhile, has already described the operation as “a quality product in a well managed, controlled environment”. The pub has three dart boards, a pool table, jukebox, gaming machine and (terrestrial) TV – but for many it will now all be about the price of the ale. Mike Dring added: “We do want to attract new customers, including students, but we also want to keep our existing customers.” Elsewhere, preparations for the incoming ICE Totally Gaming expo are proceeding at full pace, with a record number of countries set to be in attendance. Visitors to ICE Totally Gaming will have access to a host of new companies drawn from across the international gaming landscape, with 67 new exhibitors from 33 jurisdictions confirmed.

I think it’s important that the triennial review stays as a triennial review and it’s not the start of another three years towards a solution, so you end up with six years. It should be every three years, so everyone knows where they are. MARTIN BURLIN, EAG

visited the ICE gaming show previously, but this is the first time for us to exhibit. We are currently looking to expand outside the Australasian and North American regions.” And finally, the world record for legendary coin-op machine ‘Mario Bros!’ one of the first appearance’s of video gaming’s most famous character, has been smashed by an American musician and semi-professional poker player. Retro arcade arbiters Twin Galaxies posted an update announcing its confirmation of Steven Kleisath as the new record holder. On 5 January, 2105, Steven announced that he had accomplished an incredible score of 5,424,920 on the classic arcade version of Mario Bros! The game news world raced forward with the amazing story of a new world record having been set. Conspicuously absent from the media frenzy, was any announcement or statement from Twin Galaxies. This

Leading the way with the most number of new exhibitors is Malta with ten, followed by host nation the United Kingdom (six), Spain (five), Gibraltar (four), the British Virgin Islands and Italy (both three). Stressing the importance of ICE, Anastasia Zencika, marketing and events manager at first time exhibitor, Latvianbased ECommPay commented: “We always try to be up-to-date with the new trends in the industry and ICE is the show where we can do this. Last year we visited ICE to see the event, get all the inside information and get some inspiration. This year as an exhibitor our aim is to get as much from ICE as possible, and gain everything the show has to offer. Echoing the sentiment, fellow first time exhibitor, Raif Oymen, director global engineering of The Bright Group who is making the 17,000 km journey from New South Wales, Australia to be at ICE said: “The Bright Group has

absence was due to the fact that Twin Galaxies must hold to the standard of verifying and confirming a world record officially first, before it can formally declare any score as a Twin Galaxies World Record. Thanks to a tie up with Guinness, any officially ratified Twin Galaxies score also counts as a Guinness World Record, enhancing the need to absolute certainty. Holding its potential celebratory excitement back is definitely frustrating for TG, but that inconvenience is what comes with the responsibility of maintaining the highest standard and practice of video game scorekeeping in the world. At last, Mr. Kleisath’s fantastic performance has been fully adjudicated and accepted. This means that Twin Galaxies is enormously pleased to officially announce that Steven Kleisath is now the all new Twin Galaxies Mario Bros. Arcade World Record holder!

f course, with the election looming so closely, there’s bound to O be speculation on what the outcome is going to mean for us - not to mention some tough conversations at the dinner table. The parties in opposition are generally free to say a little bit more and support us a little bit more, but we’re well aware that they won’t always act upon these promises if they get elected. With that in mind, we don’t focus on a particular party; we just focus on the issues - and there are three of those topping BALPPA’s agenda for the coming months. Firstly: we are making our position clear on zero hour contracts, which the vast majority of our members use very successfully. The rhetoric that initially came out from some of the main parties Labour and the Greens spring to mind - was that they wanted to outlaw these zero-hour contracts completely. We think this hard-line approach misses the point: operated fairly and properly, they can benefit both the employer and the employee. Admittedly, the ‘exclusivity’ clauses that prohibit a zero hour employee working elsewhere are entirely unfair. People should have that flexibility - that’s the whole point of zero hour contracts - so that’s what the politicians need to focus on. But ultimately, zero hour contracts are workable, and operated and regulated properly they’re a benefit to everybody. Second on our list is an amendment to the Deregulation of School Holidays bill, which is going through at the moment. That’s something that our members are very keen on.

With the deregulation of school holidays, some schools could decide to just have August as a summer holiday and spread the rest of the break throughout the year. Of course, if you’re running a business that takes most of its money in the six or seven weeks over summer, cutting that down to four could result in huge financial losses - especially if we have one or two rainy weeks in that time, as we so often do. The really bizarre thing about it is that a large percentage of our employees are 16-24, and a lot of them are in education. If those educational boundaries start becoming blurred, it’s going to be increasingly difficult to get staff in the right place at the right time. Last but not least, of course, there’s the seaside. We’ve been involved with MPs on coastal tourism strategy for quite a while, and both the Conservative Party and the Labour Party have invited us to talk to representatives in regard to their strategy going forward. In our view, any investment is better than no investment, and wise investment is even better still. Coastal towns are made up of more than just tourist attractions, but these attractions are at the heart of the town. If you invest in that and grow it,then it helps the whole town grow. Taking Bournemouth as a case in point, the pier has just reopened after a lot of investment, and it now has a zip wire and indoor climbing, which is a great focal point for that town. For us, the coastal solution is simple: it’s a case of finding something to start with and growing it from there.
