A new $700m casino project has opened in the southern US gambling enclave of Lake Charles, Louisiana. But will it turn out to be a Golden Nugget? James Walker reports.
Tilman Fertitta: ‘Lake Charles is our first ground-up development’
he Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino has opened in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Located just two hours from Houston, Texas, the $700m (E570m) property features 740 luxury hotel rooms, an 18-hole golf course, a spa, extensive retail options, restaurants and a casino floor featuring 70 table games, poker room and 1,600 of the world’s newest slot machines. Tilman Fertitta, chairman, CEO and sole shareholder of operator Fertitta Entertainment, cut the ribbon on the south-west Louisiana venue on December 8. The 1.3m-square-foot property has become Feritta’s fifth casino since he took over Golden Nugget casino and hotel properties in Las Vegas and Laughlin, Nevada, nine years ago. He later bought and rebranded a Trump facility in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and he recently opened a casino in Biloxi, Mississippi. “Golden Nugget Lake Charles is like no other gaming resort offering a first-class, Las Vegasstyle atmosphere right here in the South,” said Fertitta. “We know our strong Texas and Louisiana customer base will enjoy having these unbeatable, luxury amenities closer to home. “Our Vegas, Laughlin, Atlantic City and Biloxi properties each required a dramatic renovation and rebranding, whereas Lake Charles is our first ground-up development and articulates our style through and through.” A popular spot for Texas gamblers and the closest in proximity, Lake Charles is located hours away from three of the largest, top-tier Texas markets - Houston, San Antonio and Austin which generate almost 65 per cent of the gaming revenue in Lake Charles.
Golden Nugget opens as the jewel in Lake Charles crown
Golden Nugget joins L’Auberge and Isle of Capri in Lake Charles. Less than 30 miles in either direction, gamblers can also visit the Coushatta Casino Resort in Kinder and the Delta Downs racetrack in Vinton. Together, they draw millions of visitors each year. Fertitta and L’Auberge operator Pinnacle Entertainment said that while they are competitors, their proximity to one another will help both businesses. A boardwalk and walkway connecting the two casinos are under construction. Louisiana now has 16 authorised casinos and four horse racing tracks with casino games. The Harrah’s venue in New Orleans is the only casino not
required to be on an approved body of water - an exception to the 1992 legislation that allowed so-called ‘riverboat casinos’ and led in short order to their opening on designated waterways, including the Calcasieu River, which runs through Lake Charles. Because of that law, the L’Auberge and Golden Nugget each maintain a steering wheel and propellers even though neither building can float. “It’s the closest place you can have a casino in Texas,” he said. “You have so many Texans that want to gamble. And we have built a property that is so beautiful. This property is Vegas. You walk into it and you could be on any property on the strip.”
ANALYSIS ver the last two decades, gamblers from Texas have helped transform Lake Charles, a blue-collar petrochemical town in south-western Louisiana, into a vibrant tourist destination anchored by waterfront casinos. While some industry analysts have questioned the need for a new gaming venue in Lake Charles, the opening of Golden Nugget comes as the Louisiana gaming market begins to recuperate from the economic collapse of 2008. In fiscal 2014, the Louisiana Gaming Control Board (LGCB) said the industry generated revenues of $675m (E546m), up $4m (E3.2m) on the previous year. More recently, in October 2014, all but three of Louisiana’s casino venues reported a year-on-year increase in monthly revenues, with the total reaching $137m (E110m), up 3.5 per cent on the same period in 2013.
