Brisbane casino war heating up lthough there can be only one winner, the Brisbane skyline is set to experience an ultra-modern transformation, as leisure operators Echo Entertainment and Crown Resorts reveal their designs for a new integrated resort development in the east Australian city. The rival companies are heading up two consortiums that are bidding for the coveted casino licence at Queen’s Wharf in Brisbane’s city centre. Crown Resorts, which has formed a partnership with Greenland Group, outlined its vision for a “landmark entertainment and tourism destination” that includes three hotels, a gaming area and a worldclass precinct boasting sig-

nature restaurants and bars. “With Greenland and our world-class architects, I am committed to building something truly spectacular - a landmark precinct for the people of Queensland,” said Crown chairman, James Packer. “There will be active waterfront and new public places for the community to enjoy live sports broadcasts, fashion, arts, music, markets and public celebrations.” For its part, Echo Entertainment, which is based in Brisbane and already owns the Treasury Brisbane Casino and Hotel, has partnered with Hong Kong organisations Chow Tai Fook Enterprises (CTF) and Far East Consortium International (FEC) to create its

Located just north of Cairns, the A$8bn (E5.4bn) Aquis Great Barrier Reef resort would include 7,500 hotel rooms, a convention and exhibition centre, two casinos, a golf course and an artificial lake and lagoon. Developers hope to begin construction as early as next year and the first stage of the resort will open in 2019 if approved. Headed up by Hong Kong businessman Tony Fung Wing Cheung, Aquis Group is developing a foothold in Australia. own vision for the Queen’s Wharf Brisbane Project. Their plans include a publicly accessible sky deck with restaurants and bars, five hotels, a “river arena”, a riverfront moonlight cinema, 12 football fields of public event space and an underground shopping mall. Echo’s managing director and CEO Matt Bekier said: “We have conducted extensive community engagement in Queensland over the last two years to deliver what will be both a globally relevant and leading Integrated Resort, but also one that is built specifically for Brisbane. I am extremely proud of what the team has been able to put together and am confident the precinct will have signifi-

cant tourism, economic and associated benefits for the State of Queensland.” At this stage in the process, both Crown and Echo are barred from disclosing the size of their casinos, the number of machines and table games and the number of residential apartments versus hotel rooms. However, Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney reiterated the importance of the gaming aspect of the development. “The point was very strongly made to us by international tourist operators that this sort of integrated resort development is the emerging product in the tourism market,” Seeney said. “Tourism is one of four pillars of the Queensland

economy.” “We have a great many natural wonders which are great tourism attractions for Queensland, but if we are going to remain competitive in that international tourism market, then we have to offer a product that fills this segment of the market as well.” Crown will be hoping for a similar result it snared in Sydney, where it gained approval in 2013 to build a A$1.5bn (E1bn) luxury hotel and casino at the Barangaroo development, and wrested Echo’s monopoly control on the city’s casino market. When Crown Sydney opens in 2019 it will come up against Echo’s flagship casino, The Star.
