Bobby George Oglesby, Jr. was joyously welcomed into this new life kicking and crying on August 12, 1969 in Hampton VA. He was granted Fifty One Years Eleven months and nineteen days with family and friends. Having completed his full assignment while enduring much pain, Bobby expressed recently that he was just tired and his earthly body was giving notice. Bobby departed this life on July 25, 2021, in the wee hours of Sunday morning “sustained and soothed by an unfaltering trust” in his Heavenly Father. Bobby named for his eartlhyFather, also known as “Pete” was affectionately tagged as “Lil Pete.” Following the model of his Mother, he gave his Heart to Christ under the teachings of Pastor Dwight Riddick. He joined Gethsemane Baptist Church and was baptized in his early teens. Among his service to the Lord he enjoyed singing with the male chorus at Gethsemane. Growing up in Hampton, he attended the public schools and became an avid sports fan. He was always on the neighborhood basketball courts. He was a defensive end with the Mallory football team in the City Recreation League. When he wasn’t working or playing ball he was riding his bicycle with his friends. According to his friends, “he was an all around good spirited person. He loved having fun and he loved people and was always the life of the party as well as a very good dancer.” He was dubbed “ Mr.5 Star” and he was not less than 5 Stars when he graduated from Bethel High School in June of 1988. Lil Pete enrolled in Virginia State University with a major in Sociology. In his junior year while home for a weekend he and his cousin fell prey to unknown attackers at a local food drive in. He was never able to return to Virginia State. Thankfully, his spirit and his personality remained in tact. He was preceded in death by his Paternal grandparents, Mr. James D. Oglesby Sr., Mrs. Georgia Oglesby: Maternal grandparents Mr. Arthur Robinson Sr., Mrs. Maggie Jones Robinson; Father, Bobby George Oglesby, Sr.; Uncles, Aunts, Cousin Lil Pete leaves to cherish his fond memories, his beloved Mother, Brenda Oglesby; a devoted Sister, Tonya Oglesby Stevens (Jeffery); Nephews: Darius Tobin, Jaylen Oglesby; Aunts: Nellie Whitfield (Patrick); Virginia Oglesby, all of Hampton; Katie Oglesby MD; Audrey Lassiter (Joe) Hampton; Renee Robinson, Hampton; Janet Robinson, Colorado; Great Aunts: Willie Eley, Newport News; Constance Hart, Hampton; Uncles: Arthur Robinson ( Barbara) Smithfield VA; John Robinson, Newport News; Great Uncles: Alton Jones (Ruby); Walter Jones; Eldridge Jones (Oknyo) all of Hampton; and a host of Nephews, Cousins, Neighbors and Friends.
A Loving Tribute In Memory of Bobby George “Lil Pete” Oglesby, Jr.
by Doris Mangrum To his loving Mother, Brenda, devoted sister Tonya and other precious members of the Oglesby and Jones Families. We share your love and we share the loss of this beautiful person whom God created to fill the significant rolls of Son, Brother, Exceptional Big Brother/Uncle to Darius and Jaylen (of the household), Cousin, and Friend. Bobby, better known as “Lil Pete,” was a gift to all of us and we all had our little special place on his journey. Some knew him as a bouncing baby boy, bringing special joy to his parents. Some knew him as an early childhood playmate, others as classmate, team mate, coworker, neighbor, special friend or maybe just that easy going respectful young man always with a smile on his face who never hurt a flea. Then above all, there’s that incredible special bond of love for his “Rocks” Mom, and Tonya who knew him best. Lil Pete was a warrior for many years in reference to his health from a fateful mishap during his junior year at Virginia State College. There were frequent hospital and medical interventions. This Mother and Sister kept the vigil each day providing loving care and other services to lift the spirit of their son and brother. On better days he would accompany his Mother to Bible study and was her “Rock” on many days through the years.
Lil Pete was raised in a God Fearing home and put his trust in the Lord. He knew he had a home in Heaven and one day the Lord would dispatch His Angel to escort him there to greet his Dad, grandparents and other relatives. And so it was, at the end of a full day and a dialysis treatment on Saturday; in the wee hours of the morning with some discomfort he called out to his mother and within the twinkling of an eye the Lord had dispatched His Angel.
We search for words to ease the pain and ways to show our love. We stand strong with you and for you whatever your needs. Just know that God sent Lil Pete to you for a little while. You loved him, you held him, you took care of him, you supported him and you walked every mile of the way with him and finally surrendered him to His Father. To God Be The Glory. Thank You Brenda, Tonya and all the Family and Friends, Doctors, Care givers, medical and transport teams who shared whatever part in the Life, Love and Care Of Bobby. Thank you Pastor Riddick, Ministers, Deacons and Gethsemane Church Family. With Fond Memories and Love for our Angel Above The Mangrum Family
