Carrie Mae Patterson was called to her heavenly home on Saturday, June 8, 2023 peacefully at home with family at her side. She was born to the late William Douglas and Letha Mae Williams on July 16, 1946 in Robinson County, NC. She was raised by her grandmother, the late Artis Douglas, with her Aunt Helen, Aunt Sarah, Uncle Nank , Uncle Booker T. and close cousins to assist.

Carrie attended R.B Dean High School, Maxton, NC. She was very active in school. She participated in the band and played on the basketball team. She later relocated to Newport News, VA. She found this to be a home for herself and her children. She was employed at the Holiday Inn in Newport News for over 15 years.

“Carrie love”, as she affectionately called, was loving and kind. She was bold and spoke her mind. She was very witty and loved to laugh and make others laugh. She was very outgoing and determined to prove that she was able to do what others thought she could not. She enjoyed watching soap operas and game shows. She was the neighborhood hair stylist, always leaving everyone looking in tip top shape. She enjoyed cooking, baking cakes and entertaining everyone who stopped by.

She loved the Lord and was baptized at an early age at Piney Grove in Maxton, NC. It was there she grew in her knowledge of Christ. She later joined Gethsemane Baptist Church, Newport News, VA, where she served faithfully as an usher and greeter. She encouraged her family in the faith, also bringing her grandchildren to worship and various the activities offered. She was a true testament to her family of the faithfulness of God. Even as her health declined, she trusted God all the way.

This matriarch loved her family. She instilled in them to be kind to one another and to always get along. She raised and cared for two of her granddaughters and a greatgranddaughter. She loved her life long companion of 26 years, Nathan Cole. They enjoyed life together and would rarely be apart from one another. Her children and grandchildren adored her and will miss her greatly.

She was predeceased by her parents, grandmother; sister, Alice Carter; and brother, Ronnie Douglas.

Left to cherish her memory are life long companion, Nathan Cole, Children, Carrie Vonnette Patterson (Curtis Wells), Christie Patterson, Charles Patterson (Angela Davis); eight grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; god daughter, Teresa Frink; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family members and friends.

Miss Me But Let Me Go

When I come to the end of the road and the sun has set on me, I want no rites in a gloom filled room, why cry for a soul set free.

Miss me a little--but not too long, and not with your head bowed low, Remember the love that we once shared, miss me--but let me go.

For this is a journey that we all must take, and each must go alone.

It’s all a part of the Master’s plan, a step on the road to home. When you are lonely and sick of heart, go to the friends we know. And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds, miss me--but let me go.

The family of the late Carrie M. Patterson would like to extend their gratitude for all acts of kindness shown during their time of bereavement. Please keep them in prayer in the days to come as God mends their broken hearts. My God continue to bless each of you.

A special thanks to Megan Pollard for all of your care and concern for our mom.
