Dorothy Valentine, a beloved mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away on November 6, 2023, at the age of 80. She was born on September 8, 1943, in Nash County, North Carolina, to the late William Henry Gray, Sr., and Pearlie Mae Gray.

Dorothy’s journey through life was marked by dedication, love, and unwavering faith. She received her education at Phillips High School in Edgecombe, NC and New York City Technical College, where she began to lay the foundation for her future. She relocated to New York with her family in 1967. On February 10, 1986, she embarked on a long and meaningful career at the New York City Department of Homeless Services, where she served until her retirement on April 6, 2006.

Dorothy’s legacy lives on through her children, Janice Rodgers ( James), Evelyn Chadwick, Christopher Gray, and Cutina Gray; grandchildren: Ebony Chadwick, Quinton Gray, Amber Chadwick, Damien Douglas, Ashley Gray, Malik Chadwick, Brianna Rodgers, Tremayne Stone, Brandon Rodgers, DeAndre Stone, Nasir Lawrence, Kaelani Berthaud, Marielle Carter, and Jasiah Jackson; sibings, Gladys Reed (New York), Lillian Sharpe (North Carolina), Magdalene Smythe (New York), Barbara Dunlap (New York), Gloria Gray (North Carolina), and Cynthia Gray (Georgia).

After her retirement, Dorothy relocated to Newport News, Virginia, where she continued to build her legacy. She was a faithful member of the Gethsemane Baptist Church in Newport News, where her love for God was evident in her devotion and active participation in church activities. Dorothy had a passion for bowling and was an enthusiastic member of a local bowling league. Her competitive spirit and sportsmanship endeared her to her fellow bowlers and made her a cherished member of the community. She was predeceased by her parents, her spouse, McKinley Valentine, and her brothers, William

She was married to the late McKinley Valentine, and their love endured, she embraced and welcome his children and grandchildren as her own.

A burial service will take place on Saturday, Novmeber 18, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. St. Matthews Church Cemetery 813 New Hope Lane, Battleboro, NC
