Deacon Hurley Jones Jr., 74, joined his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Wednesday, January 25, 2023. At Riverside Regional Medical Center.
He was born March 26, 1948, to the late Cora and Bishop Hurley Jones, Sr. in Newport News, Va. He attended Huntington High School, later enlisted into the United States Armed Services. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps in Camp Pendleton, California, also the United States Marine Corps Reserves, and San Diego Gas and Electric Company at the Carlsbad Operations Department in Carlsbad, California from March 30, 1970, to June 6, 1980. He was also employed by the Newport News International Longshoremen Association (Local 846), and Newport News Shipbuilding.
Deacon Jones was a godly man who loved spending time with his family and talking about God with anyone he encountered whether it was in Walmart, doctor’s office or at a restaurant. When you asked him how he was doing, you could count on him to respond, “I’m still looking up.” If he wasn’t talking about the word of God, he was talking about his family and how much he loved them. He was also a true die-hard Pittsburg Steelers and L.A. Lakers Fan. He was an awesome master griller during the summertime and loved cooking his famous Golden Corral Buffet style breakfast early Saturday mornings. He loved to have a good laugh and have fun with his family. He was always confessing, speaking, preaching and teaching the word of God. He was committed to helping others from volunteering at his children and grandchildren’s school over the years, to numerous activities at church.
He was previously a dedicated member of Gethsemane Baptist Church for 18 years where he graduated from GBC bible institute, served as President of the Male Chorus, and Missionary Ministry, serving as Missionary Ministry Secretary. Deacon Jones joined
Family Light Baptist Church where his father Bishop Hurley Jones, Sr. was the pastor. While a member, he was ordained as a deacon and served on several ministries.
Deacon Jones was currently a member of Ivy Farms Community of Faith where the Reverend Dr. Alexander Jamison is the Pastor where he served as a faithful Sunday School Teacher until he was called home. He was dedicated to the “Tidewater Peninsula Baptist Association, Laymen’s LEague Unity Community Chorus. He also completed the Netcaster’s Pastors and Leaders Tarining in Hampton, VA.
Deacon Jones was a wise kind, and loving man of God, who had a genuine passion and love for others. He was a very humble man who talked and walked in the fear of God, who was not ashamed of speaking the word of God. A man full of integrity, compassion, humility, trustworthiness and a faithful servant of God’s word. He was a great husband, father, brother, uncle and grandfather who always put others before himself. We will forever cherish his laughs, life stories, memories of his Big Mama, and the love for his family.
He leaves to cherish his fond memories and the apple of his eye of 38 years, Cynthia Jones of Newport News, Va. his children Eric Steele (Karen) of Hampton, Va., Sasheen Jones (Jermaine) of Newport News, Va., Casandra Williams of Hemet, California and Angela Lenz of San Antonio, Texas.; 2 grandchildren Eryka Steele of Jacksonville, NC and Jazlyn Jones of Newport News, VA. I’m Free
Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free, I’m following the path God laid for me. I took his hand when I heard his call, I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day, To laugh, to love, to work, to play. Tasks left undone must stay that way, I’ve found that peace at the end of the day. If my parting has left a void, Then fi ll it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, Ah, yes, these things too I will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My Life’s been full, I savoured much, Good friends, good times, a loved one’ touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me, God wanted me now, He set me free.
