Rev. Brite, affectionately known as “O Buddy”, was born in Princess Anne County on February 1, 1924 to the late Haywood Brite Sr. and the late Pearl Brite. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Haywood, Jr., Edward L., Sr., Charlie and Curley Brite; sisters, Margaret Dorsey, Maude Fletcher, Myrtle Stith, Beaulah and Edith Brite.
He was educated at Blackwater school, located in what was then called Princess Anne County, VA. He confessed faith in Jesus Christ at an early age and was baptized and became a member of New Oak Grove Baptist Church, Virginia Beach, VA. He later accepted the call to ministry and was licensed and ordained by New Oak Grove Baptist Church. He was full of the spirit and loved to preach. He didn’t wait for an invitation to preach at any church, he would preach to whoever would listen. He had a way of coming up with unique sermon titles such as, Walking Garbage Can, Hanging Curtains and Spiritual Automobile.
“O Buddy” was also soft spoken and easy going. He was one you would never hear complain. Rev. Brite will be missed, but his spirit of love and friendliness will linger in our hearts. He leaves to cherish his memory two sisters, Carolyn Brite of Chesapeake, VA and Nancy Bell of Irvington, NJ; Nancy Stancil of Chesapeake, VA and Benny Brite of Virginia Beach, VA for whom Rev. Brite served as legal guardians. He had three special nephews, Edward L. Brite, Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA, Alfonzo Bailey, and Colby A. Brite both of Chesapeake, VA; three special nieces, Lisa White of Fredericksburg, VA, Carol Brite of Virginia Beach, VA, and Madeline Dupree of Irvington, NJ; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and friends.
Rev. Joseph “O Buddy” Brite entered his eternal rest on Sunday, October 16, 2022 at Chesapeake General Hospital, Chesapeake, VA.
