Edwin L. Payne, beloved husband, step-father, brother-in-law, brother, and uncle,
was called home to take his eternal rest on Thursday, January 28, 2021. Edwin was born to the late Cecil H. and Betty Payne on August 31, 1957 in Kansas City, Missouri. On June 25, 1999, Edwin married the love of his life Gail Payne, who loved and cared for him until he was called home. During their union, Edwin became a loving and caring step-father to his step-daughters Bernice Gatewood and Linda Pierce Carter (preceded in death). He also shared a special bond with this step-grandson, Michael Pierce; and son-in-law, Michael Carter. Edwin was employed at Terry’s Automotive for 31 years as a mechanic. He had a passion for working on cars, spending time with his family, listening to music, fishing, and his most favorite was listening and talking on his CB radios. Edwin loved conversing with others and was often seen smiling and laughing. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and loved his family dearly. Edwin leaves to cherish his memories; his wife Gail Payne of Newport News, Virginia; stepdaughter Bernice Gatewood of Concord, North Carolina; step-grandson Michael Pierce of Newport News, Virginia; Son-in-law Michael Carter of Newport News, Virginia; sister Linda Wilson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; brothers Orlando Payne of Texas; Wayne Payne of Kansas City, Missouri; Michael Madison of Kansas City, Missouri; brother-in-laws Thomas A. Pierce, Sr. of Newport News, Virginia; David Walker, Sr. of Virginia Beach, Virginia and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Remember me with smiles not tears, for all the joy through all the years. Recall the closeness that was ours, A love as “sweet” as fragrant flowers.

Family and Friends
Don’t dwell on thoughts that cause you pain, We’ll see each other once again. I am at peace….try to believe, It was my time… I had to leave. But “what a view” I have from here, I see your face, I feel you near. I follow you throughout the day, You’re not alone along the way. And when God calls you…you will be, Right by my side… right here with me. Till then, I’ll wait by heaven’s door, We’ll be united… evermore.
The family would like to thank all of you who have shown special acts of kindness and support during this difficult time. Please continue to keep the family in prayer.
