Greater Buffalo/Niagara Area Summer 2010
The Route Guide map uses the region's street and bikepath network to produce a continuous bicycle route system. Most of the on-road selections are those preferred by local bike clubs for their own rides. Several popular attractions have been indicated on the maps, both as points of interest, and as visual landmarks when traveling throughout the region. This Guide also presents an overview of a bicyclist's legal responsibilities, and some general equipment issues and riding tips to consider before you ride. Please acquaint yourself with the sections covering "On-Street" and "Multi-Use Trails". Make your bicycle trip safe and as enjoyable as possible by knowing your responsibilities and privileges.

Be aware that the GBNRTC and those involved with the production of this Guide do not guarantee the safety of the routes indicated on these maps for use by bicyclists. The on-street routes are part of the region's adopted Bicycle Master Plan and have been color-coded to represent how comfortable a typical bicyclist would feel riding along a particular stretch of roadway. These routes were not ride-tested by the GBNRTC. Bicyclists may very well encounter such problems as drainage grates, potholes, loose gravel, and on some roads, even heavy traffic flows. Like all roads users, bicyclists must remain alert to continued next panel hazardous conditions.

All on-street routings are regular roads used daily by drivers of motor vehicles. Bicyclists must assess their own riding skills to determine if they possess sufficient ability to adapt to changing traffic patterns and road conditions. These are all variables that control the degree of risk associated with bicycling. Bicyclists must assume the responsibility for their own safety when using the routes indicated on these maps.

Metro's
Bikes on Rail Program
ď Ź Whether you are headed for work, school, shopping or just fun, you and your bike can ride Metro Rail for a single fare. The following are rules and safety tips for participating in this program: When boarding a train in an underground station, enter the front door of any car. If you are going downtown you should board the first car in order to take advantage of the elevated platform when exiting.
Bicycling is a viable form of transportation that can be used for commuting to work or school, running errands, and for recreation.
Enter the rail car only after all other passengers have entered or exited the car. Only 2 bikes are permitted per car in the area designated for wheelchairs. If the area is occupied or someone boards in a wheelchair, please move to another car or wait for the next train. In underground stations, use the elevators to and from the train platform. DO NOT carry bikes up or down the stairs or on the escalators. Riders 15 years of age and under must be accompanied by an adult.
Bicycling is economically efficient, saving the commuter bicyclist on an annual basis approximately three-quarters the cost of driving.
Riding of bicycles in Metro Stations is strictly prohibited. Please walk your bike in and around the stations.
Bicycling is a renewable, non-polluting form of transportation. Bicycling reduces the consumption of fossil fuels, alleviates traffic congestion, and improves the region's air quality.
Above all, please be considerate of your fellow passengers.

When boarding a train downtown in Buffalo Place, enter the front door only of the first car using the elevated platform.
Bicycling enhances our ability to experience and interact with the vibrancy of our neighborhoods, villages and towns, something which is very difficult when inside a car.

Always Wear a Properly Fitted Helmet * All bicyclists, scooters and in-line skaters under the age of 14 are required by law to wear an approved bicycle helmet when they are operators or passengers on bicycles and while skating. Any parent or guardian whose child violates this law is subject to a fine of up to $50. It is the duty of every person operating a bicycle within an Erie County Park to wear a protective safety helmet. Regardless of age or ability, everyone should wear a properly fitted helmet certified by the Snell Memorial Foundation or the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) (look for the approval sticker on the inside of the helmet shell). Helmets significantly reduce the risk of sustaining a serious head injury in the event of a crash. A helmet should fit squarely on the top of the head in a level position and cover the top of the forehead extending down to about one inch above the eyebrows. The helmet should not be able to slide back and forth or rock from side to side.
Earphones are Dangerous * Using earphones while bicycling (or skating) on a public right-of-way (street or sidewalk) is illegal. If you use earphones on a trail, keep the volume sufficiently low to hear other pathway users.
* = New York State Bicycle Law From the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee:
716-851-4052 Metro, a subsidiary of the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority www.nfta.com
Multi-Use Trails Share the Trail All trail users should keep to the right except when passing or turning left. Move off the trail to the right when stopping. Never block a trail.

The Greater Buffalo-Niagara Regional Transportation Council (GBNRTC), has prepared this Bicycle Route Guide to assist those bicycling in the BuffaloNiagara Falls area. This Guide contains the basic information all bicyclists need to know in order to properly and safely ride their bikes. The map was developed to encourage more people to bicycle by rating the comfort and quality of many roads in the urban, suburban and rural areas of this region.

New York State law requires motorists to change lanes to pass cyclists and in-line skaters.
Be Careful at Crossings Look both ways. Cyclists: yield to through traffic at intersections, pedestrians have the right of way. Pedestrians: exercise caution. Be aware of stopping limitations of bicyclists and skaters.
Stay on the Trail Keep on designated trails to protect parks, natural areas and yourself. Riding off the trail is dangerous.
Dismount as Posted Stop, dismount and walk across roadways or other posted locations. When crossing perpenticular to the flow of traffic, cross only when it is safe to do so.
Signal to Others Cyclists: when approaching others, sound your bell or call out a warning, then pass safely on the left. Pedestrians: move to the right when someone is overtaking.
Skaters Use Caution In-line skaters: know how to use your equipment safely. Follow travel, passing, and speed rules as per bicyclists. Do not perform trick skating maneuvers on trails.
Be Visible Ensure your visibility at night by wearing light-colored clothing with reflective material. Outfit your bicycle with lights as you would for riding on the roads.
