Shaping a cooperative future

Pawnee County, Kansas was created in 1867 and named for the Pawnee Indians, who inhabited the area. Pawnee County currently includes the cities of Garfield, Burdett, Rozel and Larned.

Pawnee County’s most recognized citizen is Clyde W. Tombaugh (1906-1997), who discovered the planet Pluto in February 1930. Tombaugh graduated from Burdett High School in 1925. He discovered Pluto while working at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Other notable Pawnee County natives include Hall of Fame coach Gene Keady, former Purdue basketball coach; Ralph Terry, former New York Yankees pitcher; Gary Patterson, Texas Christian University head football coach; John Zook, All-Pro NFL player and All Big 8 player at the University of Kansas; Mitch Webster, major league baseball outfielder; Hal Patterson, Canadian football player; and Belle Jennings Benchley, past director of the San Diego Zoo.

Interesting sites in the county include the nine original buildings at Fort Larned, the Pawnee County Courthouse (former), the Eagle Optic Building, the Masonic Building, the Campbell House (1886) and the Patterson House (circa 1876). The Larned Presbyterian Church was organized on July 15, 1873. The first county fair was held in 1876. Currently it is a 4-H fair. The first school district was Pawnee Number 1, formed in Larned on June 24, 1873.

Opportunities to grow, care, and explore are key components of the Pawnee County experience. Each town celebrates its history and uses it to shape the

future. When someone needs help, the community helps. When someone has a big idea, local area people help them to act on it. The people make the community special. But it is the thoughtful leadership of the community that allows these wonderful things to happen.

The Health Services sector of Pawnee County, Kansas, plays a large role in the area’s economy. It represents one of the largest employers in the area and serves as one of the largest contributors to income. Additionally, the health sector has indirect impacts on the local economy, creating additional jobs and income in other sectors. The health sector also contributes substantially to retail sales in the region.

The population of Pawnee County is 6,554, the median age is 44, there are approximately 3,152 housing units, 1,659 are owner occupied and 849 are renter occupied.

Burdett remains a bustling community

Situated on K-156 23 miles west of Larned, Burdett began its life as “Brown’s Grove”, named for Dr. Gallatin Brown who staked out the townsite in 1876. In 1879, Wright and Johnson built a flour mill with a dam on the Pawnee River furnishing power for the machinery. It was the first in Kansas west of Hutchinson and was in operation for eight years.

The railroad was surveyed from Larned in 1885 and the first train arrived in 1886. The tracks came in a half mile south of “Brown’s Grove” so business moved to the railroad and the town was re-named “Burdett” by the railroad officials for a famous writer and humorist Robert Jones Burdette.

At one time there was a grade school and a high school with the 64th and last class graduating from Burdett High School in 1966. Burdett and Rozel unified to become Pawnee Heights High School the next year.

Today, together with nearby Rozel, the town still boasts an active 4-H club, and an active senior center, Burdett Seniors Inc., which meets the second and fourth Mondays of each month, as well as having a coffee hour and summer farmer’s market.

There are also several businesses in the community, from the 156 Stop N Go convenience store to Norris Propane to Golden Valley Co-op.

The famous astronomer Clyde Tombaugh and discoverer of the planet Pluto graduated from Burdett Rural High School in 1925. The town’s City Park features a space inspired miniature golf course, as well as a playground, tennis courts, pickleball courts, a walking path and four-hole disc golf course.

As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 228.

Larned has roots in Trail

During the active days of the Santa Fe Trail in the late 1800s, Larned was built on the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad at the confluence of the Pawnee and the Arkansas Rivers. Named for nearby Fort Larned, it was laid out in December 1873 on land granted by Jerry Toles and John W. and Mary Adams. John Adams became the president of the Larned Town Company. Soon, his wife’s parents, Reverend and Mrs. Charles Sturdevant joined them. The pastor would later become one of the first ministers of Larned’s Presbyterian Church.

The first home in Larned was constructed by Captain Henry Booth who had been serving as the postmaster at Fort Larned since 1869. When Larned was formed, he resigned his position as postmaster and with several other people, was instrumental in establishing the new settlement.

In its early years, Larned was growing both in population and commerce. By the 1880s, the community had established several hotels, grocery strores, businesses and banks. Industries included the Larned Broom Factory and the Larned Pottery Company.

A major addition to the community, the region and the State of Kansas occurred in 1914, when Larned was chosen out of several Western Kansas contenders for the establishment of a state mental hospital.

The award was originally granted due to the area’s proximity to water and arable farmland and owing to farm work being considered an early therapy for mental illness.

Presently, Larned State Hospital campus houses patients from its 66-county catchment area, as well as functioning as a State Security Hospital and Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility as a facility for younger male correctional inmates.

For those interested in history, nearby Santa Fe Trail Center and Fort Larned National Historic Site remain “must-sees” while visiting the area.

The city is governed by the mayor and city council. The city manager is hired by the city council and provides administrative services. City elections are held every year. The mayor is elected from the city at large for a two-year term. Council members are elected for two years from their respective wards and serve staggered terms with an election of one position in each ward annually. There is no limit on the number of terms that may be served.

Cemetery

The city owns and maintains the cemetery located one mile west of Larned on 8th Street. Records and maps are located at City Hall.

The Larned-Pawnee County Airport is located one mile north and one mile east of Larned. A 4,200 ft. paved and lighted runway is featured. Rental hangars and a selfservice credit card fueling facility is available.

A town honoring a president

The first settlers of Garfield came from Ohio. In January 1873, two months after Pawnee County was organized by proclamation of Gov. James Harvey, members of the Ohio colony filed on about 30 pieces of land near the present site of Garfield, then known as Camp Criley.

Camp Criley was established in the late summer of 1872 as a supply station for workmen building the Santa Fe Railroad. It was named for Capt. J.D. Criley, superintendent of the construction. In March 1873, the advance guard of the Ohio colony arrived.

During the summer of 1873, others joined the growing settlement on the Arkansas River. The first religious services were held in the town that summer, the Methodists forming a

Sunday school class and the Congregationalists organizing a church. Later a Union Sabbath school was established. The Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church was organized in 1879.

But, the founders changed the name of the town from Criley to Garfield in honor of James A. Garfield, the congressman from their old district in Ohio, and later president of the United States. Mr. Garfield presented a bell to the first church erected in the town. The bell hung in the Congregational Church from 1875 to 1959 and is now part of a monument in the City Park. The park also features a bandstand-style gazebo.

According to the 2020 census, the population of the city was 151. It is located on U.S. 56 about 11 miles southwest of Larned.

A resilient and vibrant town

Resiliency and civic pride are hallmarks of Rozel, an active town of 128 residents, 17 miles west of Larned. Rozel mayor Erin Josefiak noted the town has several active civic organizations, making Rozel a very vibrant and proud small community.

The Rozel PRIDE organization, for example, has undertaken several projects, including updating the town fitness center, adding a library and public computer stations in City Hall. The Lions Club holds several scholarship fundraisers each year, including a soup supper and pancake breakfasts. They also partner with the town’s volunteer fire department to host a Christmas parade and celebration each year.

The town is also home to an active 4-H club, which has consolidated with the nearby town of Burdett. The group participates in several community service projects each year. Beyond the civic organizations, Josefiak

The original townsite was deeded to the Arkansas Valley Town and Land Company by the railroad on July 19, 1886. The name Rozel was selected in honor of a daughter of one of the founders of the Land Company, whose name was Rozella. Since it was incorporated, the town has persevered through multiple natural disasters, including a fire and a tornado.

Rozel is the hometown of K-State alumnus and Texas Christian University head football coach Gary Patterson. It was incorporated Nov. 29, 1929, and has a mayor-council form of city government with water and gas systems municipally owned. It is home to the consolidated Pawnee Heights USD 496.

Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, along with the Christmas Parade is a spectacular event. Numerous town locations have drive-through Christmas lights and Christmas light shows with music.

The community, which was named after the great bend of the Arkansas River, celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2022. Great Bend started out with deep agricultural roots and as a regional trade and service center. That role grew stronger with the oil boom, later it served as a major World War II Army Air Corps training base for B-29 bomber crews, a base that evolved into the Great Bend Municipal Airport.

From loft apartments to new boutique shops, historic downtown Great Bend is blooming. By promoting local businesses, improving its popular parks and expanding housing options, the community is poised for the future. At the crossroads of both Kansas and the nation as a whole, it has much to offer residents and visitors alike in terms of commerce, dining and recreation.

There are many parks and recreational areas, featuring activities from the water park, zoo, playgrounds, bicycle and walking trails, and disc golf to fishing. There is also the Great Bend Sports Complex with baseball and softball fields that are the envy of many communities.

Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. There is no charge for any of the park’s activities. An authentic army post from the 1860s -1870s on the Santa Fe Trail. Nine restored buildings make it the best preserved Indian Wars military post on the trail.

One mile west of Larned on K-156, then 1/2 mile south. Memorial to fallen Larned firefighters. According to Kansassampler.org, “‘The Last Alarm’ is one of the standout memorials dedicated to fallen Larned firefighters.”

PAWNEE COUNTY AREA ALL VETERANS MEMORIAL

Located in Doerr-Vernon Park at the intersection of Fort Larned Avenue and College Street.

Dedicated to the servicemen and women of Pawnee County and the surrounding area. The engraved memorial includes Veteran Honor Rolls from the Indian Wars to the Modern Era, memorial benches, stones and pavers.

ZEBULON PIKE PLAZA

The Plaza is located on the south edge of Larned on US Highway 56 next to Schnack Park. It commemorates Pike’s nearby crossing of the Pawnee River in October 1806 on his mission to conduct an exploratory expedition of the southwest portion of the Louisiana Purchase.

It provides a reference to Pike and other explorers who traveled the Santa Fe Trail and has a picnic area.

Pawnee County Fair

The Pawnee County Fair is usually held the last weekend of July. The county fair is a celebration that brings everyone together to socialize, learn and enjoy good local food and entertainment. Like other fairs they want it to be both fun and educational.

The fair helps to showcase the accomplishments of people from all the communities in the county. Entries from 4-H youth and open class are welcome. It’s a chance for everyone from youth to seniors to put their best foot forward and demonstrate a year’s worth of learning in the areas of raising and handling pets and livestock, agricultural and marksmanship skills, and hobbies and crafts including photography, needlework, painting, sculpting, woodworking, rocketry, and more.

While historically the roots of the 4-H program are deep in the world of agriculture, the modern era has seen the variety of projects expand to include many designed to appeal to kids growing up in rural and urban environments.

Livestock shows still drive the action, but many of today’s kids are just as apt to display the results of their tech

skills as their ability to lead a sheep, pig or cow around the ring. Visitors to the fair can take in all types of displays throughout the days-long event.

Past kid-centered feature events have included rodeos, frog and turtle races, bicycle safety rodeos, pie cooking

and eating contests and pedal tractor pulls. For adults, there are 4-H alumni events and concerts.

The 2023 Fair included an open class family trap shooting event, the traditional Style Revue and an ATV fun event on Saturday’s closing day.

In recent years, the Pawnee County Fair Board has recruited the Steak Cookoff Association (SCA) to compete during the Fair’s busy weekend.

In addition to local participants trying out their backyard grilling skills, SCA events draw contestants from outside the state to compete for a chance to attend their own World Championship in Texas.

4-H kids love the fair. They look forward to spending the week hanging out on the grounds, discovering new things and making new friends from other 4-H clubs.

Pawnee County has five active 4-H clubs. The clubs’ meeting places, times and current adult leaders are:

Youth that participate in the county fair learn independence, and receive feedback on their projects, while also learning sportsmanship. Most importantly they are learning life skills that will be of benefit to them for life.

SANTA FE TRAIL CENTER & FORT LARNED

Trail Center tells the story of area’s western heritage

The Santa Fe Trail Center Museum & Research Library’s mission is to provide visitors with fun and engaging educational opportunities to learn about the historic commerce route known as the Santa Fe Trail and the effect of Westward Expansion on what is now known as central Kansas.

The facility, located at 1349 K-156 two miles west of Larned, is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Paid admission includes all of the main museum galleries and four historic structures, and ranges from $6 for adults to free for those five and under. Group and school tours are available, as is rental of the facilities.

The museum has an extensive collection of authentic objects in its collections, including prehistoric American Indian artifacts, trade items from the trail, antique furniture, agricultural equipment, vintage automobiles, tools, toys, paintings, rugs, clothing, medical equipment and more. These items help interpret and share the history that has shaped the country and the community.

Fort Larned

Fort Larned is located at 1767 K-156 six miles west of Larned and is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There is no admission charge.

The fort was established to protect travelers, trail commerce, and mail delivery utilizing the Santa Fe Trail. Fort Larned National Historic Site preserves the buildings, stories and historical themes associated it.

The United States Army built the military post to protect and maintain peaceful relations with everyone on the trail. They named it Fort Larned for Col. Benjamin R. Larned, the U.S. Army paymaster, and itt served as one of the most important defense posts along the Santa Fe Trail.

Between 1866 and 1868, the Army replaced the original sod and adobe buildings with more durable stone and timber ones. Visitors can see these buildings today at the site. The fort complex of nine buildings arranged around a 400’ square parade ground includes barracks, a post hospital, two company officer’s quarters, commanding officer’s quarters, quartermaster storehouse, the old commissary, the new commissary and a shop building. Visitors may walk around and explore seven of the nine buildings at the fort to get a glimpse of what it was like to live at a western fort during the 19th century.

Festival celebrates history, the start of summer

Larned’s Santa Fe Trail Days has been an event for people of all ages that signals the start of summer since 1992.

Hosted by the Larned Area Chamber of Commerce, it celebrates Larned’s heritage. It also features inflatables for the kids, live music, beer garden, hamburger/hot dog feed, concession and craft vendors, parade, car show, ice cream social, community talent show and pig races. More fun can be enjoyed at the rodeo and riding the mechanical bull, watching the duck races, the outside movie on the Courthouse lawn, and other activities.

The Chamber strives to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Pawnee County, making it a better place to live, work and play.

State Theatre remains an iconic community centerpiece

The State Theatre opened its doors at 617 Broadway St. in Larned on April 6, 1949, and remains an iconic community centerpiece seven decades later.

While much has changed about the technology and furnishings in the historical movie house, the theater is staying true to its historical roots, and its core mission, which is to provide an affordable, family-friendly movie watching experience for the community it serves. As a not-for-profit organization, the theater is completely volunteer-run, with no one receiving a salary. Volunteers come from local churches and civic organizations who do everything from operating concessions to running the box office. Even the projectionists are volunteer positions.

That volunteer-centered operation allows the theater to keep the movie-going experience affordable for the entire family, with ticket prices ranging from $4 for children and $5 for adults for 2D movies, to $5 for children and $7 for adults for 3D movies. Most of their concessions range from $1-$2. One promotion unique to the State Theatre is their Date Night package, which for one price covers two tickets, two medium soft drinks, and one medium popcorn.

Preserving history, preparing for the future

Nearly everything on the interior has been upgraded or renovated including the digital projection system with the capability to show 3D movies. Beyond that, everything from the seats, screens, concession stands, restrooms, to the draperies that hang in the theater have been upgraded, updated or renovated to meet the needs of both the modern moviegoers and volunteers that help run it each weekend.

The theater also obtained equipment to be able to host drive-in movies, which they try to do in the community three to four times each summer. The technology allows outdoor moviegoers to receive audio through their vehicle’s FM radio.

For all the amenities that were upgraded, there are things the theater prefers not to upgrade, in order to maintain the historical integrity of the theater. For starters, White noted the State Theatre is one of few theaters still in existence that still has a cry room.

The board also decided to preserve the building’s iconic hand-operated marquee, and original front doors as long as possible, to maintain the theater’s original exterior ambiance.

The Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo is dedicated to the conservation, preservation and rescue of animals and to the education and entertainment of children and adults. The zoo staff also treats wounded birds of prey, known as raptors.

Enter through the main building, known as the Raptor Center, which includes a gift shop, restrooms, and small animal exhibits. There are wagons and other accessories available to rent.

Outdoors, find the Bill McKown Memorial Pavilion, a gazebo located next to a freshwater pond. Visitors can enjoy this shaded area and feed the fish and waterfowl when food is available from the Raptor Center. There is also a playground area. Zoo Supervisor and Curator Ashley Burdick noted these areas are easily accessible for those in wheelchairs and strollers; there’s even a wheelchair friendly swing in the playground.

Some of the newer animal exhibits outdoors are the bobcats and the capybaras.

Open year-round (except Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Thanksgiving) from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the zoo is fun and educational — and admission is free! A membership to the Great Bend Zoological Society is $25 for an entire family and provides special benefits while supporting zoo projects.

RECREATION

Pawnee County communities provide recreational opportunities

Every town in Pawnee County has something to offer in terms of recreational activities for their residents and visitors.

Burdett offers a fun Solar System themed miniature golf course. The Burdett Community Pride club maintains the course, with balls and clubs available at the city office. New playground equipment was installed at the park next to the golf course.

The Rozel Community center includes meeting space and an indoor fitness center. The Rozel park includes a playground, basketball courts, and a picnic shelter. A ballpark is also available through the community center.

Garfield is home to two parks located right on the U.S. 56, Downey Memorial Park on the east end of town, and Camp Criley park on the north.

Larned is home to the only public pool and splash pad in the county, drawing many from around the area each summer.

The large 92-year-old pool and bathhouse is located at Schnack/Lowery Park. Each year, the season opens Memorial Day weekend, and ends the weekend before back-to-school. During that time, the pool is staffed by local high school and college students, providing meaningful summer employment and patron safety.

Other Schnack/Lowery Park features include a duck pond and a 75-year-old mechanical train, the Schnack Express. Local civic groups partnered with Larned Community Pride and the city recently to add lights, sound and renovate its mechanical function to keep it running for years to come.

The splash pad located at Doerr Vernon Park, provides an

option for water-based recreation. Typically, it remains open after the pool shuts down, for as long as temperatures remain warm enough.

The Larned Recreation Commission can be found at the Larned Community Center. A variety of team sports are organized through the rec, and play is coordinated at playing fields throughout the city. Located next to the Pawnee County Fairgrounds, there is also an outdoor fitness walking track available for the public.

The Larned Municipal Golf Course, located on the far east side of city with access from the highway, provides ample opportunity for golf lovers around the area, and is also a frequent stop for college golf teams around the state. Together, the county and the cities work hard to provide a wide variety of recreational opportunities for residents and visitors.

Pawnee County, has multiple options for hunting and fishing.

The Larned Fishing Pond is open to the public daily. It is stocked regularly with species such as black crappie, bluegill, carp, channel catfish and large mouth bass. There are shaded picnic areas and restrooms.

If you plan to hunt or fish in Pawnee County though, you must have a valid Kansas Hunting or Fishing License. Purchase your state fishing and hunting license online at www. ksoutdoors.com/License-Permits.

The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism has secured leases from various Pawnee County landowners to ensure Walk In Hunting Areas (WIHAs) are available to the general public. Walk In Hunting Areas provide access to

WETLANDS WATERPARK

When summer arrives, there’s one local attraction that’s guaranteed to make a splash: the Great Bend aquatic center – Wetlands Waterpark.

Weather permitting, the pool is open from 12:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. daily from Memorial Day weekend in May to mid-August. Once things heat up, the pool is also open for Family Nights from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It’s located in Brit Spaugh Park at 2303 Main St., next to the Brit Spaugh Zoo.

More than just a municipal swimming pool, the water park’s fun wetlands artwork and big play features make it a unique, regional attraction.

The pool features seven water slides, zero-depth entry for small children, spray features, floatables that separate the deep end from the shallow end, a climbing wall and a 300 gallon tipping bucket that periodically spills onto those who dare to stand under it.

For those taking a break in the shaded areas, there are brightly colored umbrellas and a concession stand. Visitors can also find green grass and a bathhouse for changing.

Admission to the Wetlands is $3 for youths 3-17 years old, $4 for adults 18 and older, and free for children under 3. Admission on Family Nights is $2, and discount passes good for 15 visits are available for $40. The aquatic center is also available for private parties and special events. Wetlands Waterpark

GREAT BEND CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU

The Great Bend Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) is located inside the front of the Great Bend Events Center at 3111 10th Street. The CVB staff books and bids on big events and conventions for the Events Center and for Great Bend in general. The Events Center is designated as a Kansas Travel Information Center which partners with State Travel & Tourism, a resource for the State of Kansas tourism opportunities.

Each year the City works on making the Great Bend Events Center better for patrons and visitors. This includes the newly renovated back area with breakout rooms, the front bathrooms were remodeled, a new security system was put in place and next steps for the Events Center include new lighting for the ballroom, landscaping for out front, new seminar tables for the breakout rooms and paving the parking lot is also on the list.

The CVB is part of Community Coordinator/CVB Director Christina Hayes’ department. CVB staff located at the office in the Events Center includes Angie Hicks and Amanda Gaddis, Visitor Services Representatives; and Larami Klein, Administrative Assistant is located at City Hall. The CVB is 100% funded by Transient Guest Tax from hotel stays, 1% of that Transient Guest Tax helps fund the Events Center building along with revenue from events held there. The CVB represents the Great Bend City Council and strives to make the Events Center a premier event location for our area to improve the quality of life for Great Bend residents & vistors!

The staff works to promote Great Bend in various ways. Hayes’ goals include getting Great Bend’s attractions, events, fun things to do and places to stay information out to a bigger audience in the state, recruitment of new conventions, tournaments and more meetings into town. They continue to provide a hospitality program for hotels, gas stations, businesses and doctors’ offices so the front lines of our community know what’s happening in town and they can promote a positive image to those visiting here. The Be Our Guest Academy in Great Bend program is a new customized customer service and attractions training to help front lines explain the great things we have here in Great Bend!

Every two years the CVB produces a new Visitor Guide for Great Bend, this is also distributed across the state to market and promote the Events Center as the premier location in this area, as they work to bring people to visit and move to our wonderful town! Immunization Requirements for the 2023-2024 School Year

K.S.A. 72 - 6261 - Kansas Statutes Related to School Immunizations Requirements and K.A.R. 28-1-20, published July,18, 2019 in the Kansas Register, defines the immunizations required for school and early childhood program attendance.

• Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (DTaP/Tdap): Five doses required. Doses should be given at 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 15-18 months, and 4-6 years (prior to kindergarten entry). The 4th dose may be given as early as 12 months of age, if at least 6 months have elapsed since dose 3. The 5th dose is not necessary if the 4th dose was administered at age 4 years or older. A dose of Tdap is required at entry to 7th grade.

• Hepatitis A (Hep A): Two doses required. Doses should be given at 12 months with a minimum interval of 6 months between the 1st and 2nd dose.

• Hepatitis B (Hep B): Three doses required. Doses should be given at birth, 1-2 months, and 6-18 months. Minimum age for the final dose is 24 weeks.

• Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR): Two doses required. Doses should be given at 12-15 months and 4-6 years (prior to kindergarten entry). Minimum age is 12 months and interval between doses may be as short as 28 days.

• Meningococcal-Serogroup A,C,W,Y (MenACWY): Two doses required. Doses should be given at entry to 7th grade (11-12 years) and 11th grade (16-18 years). For children 16-18 years, with no previous MenACWY, only one dose is required.

• Poliomyelitis(IPV/OPV): Four doses required. Doses should be given at 2 months, 4 months, 6-18 months, and 4- 6 years (prior to kindergarten entry). Three doses are acceptable if 3rd dose was given after 4 years of age and at least 6 months have elapsed since dose 2.

• Varicella (Chickenpox): Two doses are required. Doses should be given at 12-15 months and 4-6 years (prior to kindergarten entry). The 2nd dose may be administered as early as 3 months after the 1st dose, however, a dose administered after a 4-week interval is considered valid. No doses are required when student has history of varicella disease documented by a licensed physician.

Legal alternatives to school vaccination requirements are found in K.S.A. 72-6262. In addition, to the immunizations required for

school entry the following vaccines are recommended to protect students:

• Human Papillomavirus(HPV): Two doses recommended at 11 years of age or three doses if the series is started after 15 years.

• Influenza: Annual vaccination recommended for all ages > 6 months of age. Number of doses is dependent on age and number of doses given in previous years.

• Meningitis B: 2-3 doses recommended depending on type of faccine used.

USD 495 receives Kansas State Department of Education accreditation

All public schools in the state of Kansas are required to participate in the state accreditation process. To gain this official recognition, our schools underwent a comprehensive five-year evaluation that was measured by the accreditation model called Kansas Education Systems Accreditation (KESA). Accreditation status is a reflection of our district’s commitment to meeting high standards of quality and effectiveness. USD 495’s status is effective July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2028.

The Accreditation Review Council shared the areas that we can focus on for continuous improvement, that is chronic absenteeism, increase state assessment scores, and improve graduation and post-secondary effectiveness rates. All of these align with the same goals we have written in the USD 495 strategic plan which was adopted by our Board of Education in the summer of 2022.

At the beginning of this process, the state of Kansas required our district to assemble an Outside Visitation Team to monitor and provide feedback. We are thankful for the collaboration with the following individuals: Brian Spencer - Pawnee Heights USD 496 Superintendent, Bill Keeley – Lacrosse USD 395 Superintendent, and OVT leader, Bill Day – Lyons USD 405 Superintendent. Additionally, we owe a tremendous amount of thanks to our KESA lead teachers: Jacque Wasinger, Lucia Hagerman, and Jarod Gingerich, as well as our building leadership teams and building administration.

Since 1954, organized drag racing in Great Bend has brought auto and speed enthusiasts together at the former B-29 air strip west of the city.

The founders called themselves the Gasket Blasters, but soon became a national organization, the Sunflower Rod and Custom Association, or SRCA. In 1955, the drag strip hosted the first-ever National Hot Rod Association National Championship and in 1956 Great Bend hosted the first-ever American Hot Rod Association Championship.

According to SRCA track spokesperson Hank Denning, much of the funds used each year to keep the track operational are invested directly back into the city. As a 501(c) not-for-profit organization, the SRCA Club does not accept

public funding. The staff is volunteer, which allows any money the club takes in to be invested directly back into the facility.

In 1994 the drag strip was placed on the Register of Historic Kansas Places.

The track has been a vital part of both Great Bend’s past and its future, and its positive exposure. Thousands of racers and spectators have traveled to Great Bend each year to compete, test here or just watch the events.

The track was closed for repairs for the 2023 season and they hope to be open and racing again!

The mission

Pawnee County Humane Society’s mission is ongoing, to provide forever homes for sheltered animals and prevent suffering, neglect and abuse to animals through community awareness and education.

However, in any given year, the humane society may reunite approximately 100 lost pets with their owners. Director Andrea Burler-Lartz

recommends microchipping pets. She recalled a recent case when a “stray” cat came to the shelter and, thanks to the chip, it was reunited with its owners. Losing your pet can be a heartbreaking event. According to the American Humane Association, only about 15% of dogs and 2% of cats without an ID tag or microchip are reunited with their owners. That’s why it is so important that your pet has some form of ID to make sure you’re reunited if your pet ever gets lost.

The Pawnee County Humane Society offers microchips from 24 Pet Watch for only $10 per pet. If you’d like to come and get your pet chipped, please call ahead to make sure someone is at the shelter who can place the chip.

About the shelter

In 2005, a group of concerned citizens recognized that Larned, like many communities across the country, had a problem

with pet homelessness. Strays brought to the Larned City Pound were euthanized after three days if not claimed. In many cases, these were healthy, adoptable animals that only needed a safe, caring place to stay until they could be placed in new homes. The Pawnee County Humane Society was established as a steering committee under the City of Larned. As awareness grew, PCHS also began helping with animals from the whole county.

The organization was granted a non-profit 501(c)3 status in August, 2011.

“Our success is due to the countless hours put in by our many volunteers who truly want to make life a little better for the homeless pets in Pawnee County,” Buhler noted. “Also,

thanks to the support of our local veterinary clinics, the homeless pets are spayed, neutered, and living healthier lives.”

Many community interactions are dedicated to keeping the Humane Society running. The annual dog swim at the close of summer, raffles, cash giveaways, community donation/adoption events and interactive social media fundraisers continue to support the society’s aim.

Volunteer support continues to drive campaigns for continuously needed pet items such as food and litter, and for providing operations maintenance such as appliances. Shopto-give programs such as iGive and Dillons Community Rewards also contribute to the facility’s cash flow.

Larned State Hospital (LSH), operated by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS), sits on a 78-acre campus and is the largest psychiatric facility in the state, serving Kansans since 1914. The hospital serves more than 450 patients and residents and employs more than 750 staff members. The hospital has three patient/ resident programs on campus, the Psychiatric Services Program, State Security Program, and the Sexual Predator Program. The hospital employs medical staff, nurses, mental health technicians, social workers, psychologists, a full time chaplain and therapists to address routine medical and psychiatric needs of patients. The eight-passenger bus is funded by the Kansas Department of Transportation through grant money, and volunteer drivers operate the bus. Pawnee County demographics

In 2022. Kansas was ranked as the second leading wheat production state with about 244.2 million bushels produced. Kansas produces nearly 20% of all wheat grown in the United States. It was also tops in grain sorghum (milo), and third in cattle production.

Pawnee County had 362 farms with an average size of 1,310 acres in 2022. Total acreage provided by the Kansas Department of Agriculture was 474,275 acres, accounting for 98% of total acreage in the county.

The KDA reports that in 2022, 19 agriculture and agriculture-related sectors directly contributed $235,814,000 in output and 546 jobs to the Pawnee County economy. Direct and indirectly, ag sectors have a total impact of $292 million in output, 869 jobs and 24% of the total Gross Regional Product. The average net farm income per farm was $83,626.

Top two sectors by output and employment are beef cattle ranching and farming, and grain farming, They all contribute to providing food security for the nation and the world. The beef cattle industry contributed $105,818,000 in revenue, while grain farming contributed $89,133,000.

The climate in Pawnee County is sub-humid and is marked by extremes of precipitation and temperature. The average growing season is about 174 days and has ranged from 143 to 220 days.

Oil and gas in Pawnee County

The Kansas Geological Survey (KSGS) at the University of Kansas tells us the earliest oil well in Pawnee County to produce was drilled in July 1936. The operator was Simpson Oil Company and it was located in the northeast corner of the county, northwest of the City of Pawnee Rock.

The KSGS reported that in 2022, 156 oil wells produced 144,227 barrels of oil. In addition, 71 wells produced 366,101 mcf of natural gas (one mcf equals 1,000 cubic feet). As of March 2023, wells had pumped 34,650 barrels, and had extracted 77,634 mcf of natural gas.

Activity demographics for Pawnee County indicates a downward trend for oil and gas production dating back to 1980, although there was a spike in 2015.

Pawnee County currently ranks 46th out of the 105 Kansas counties for oil production. It sits at 511 in the nation based on barrels of oil equivalent production. There are currently 22 active producers in the county.

It also ranks 30th in gas production in Kansas.

Kansas ranks 11th nationally in terms of oil production. It’s total production for 2022 was 28,003,139 barrels.

In addition to fuel, oil is a by-product for many items we use daily in our community, Kansas and the world. It also plays a big part in the local economy through revenue and people employed.

Great Bend Appliance, Furniture & SleepSource celebrates 25 years of business

There are always going to be choices and challenges in life, but when a door opens wide, it’s advisable to walk through it, notes Great Bend’s Dale Pruter.

A quarter-century ago, Pruter and his wife Sherry were faced with a big decision in coming to Great Bend, he said.

“At the time, it was pretty scary,” he said. “It felt like it probably wouldn’t have happened any other place or to any other people in the world, but it happened to us.”

As it turned out, it was the right move.

The long way ‘round

Before getting to Great Bend, Dale and Sherry took the long way round, he said.

Dale and Sherry met and married in Russell. They then traveled to Clay Center, where they purchased the local Sears appliance and catalog store.

In 1993, their store was caught up in Sears’ major corporate refit, closing 113 stores across the country, discontinuing its iconic “big book” catalog, and saying goodbye to 50,000 employees.

“It was a good business and a great learning experience for us,” Pruter said.

Dale landed a job with Jim’s Appliance in Inman, which provided name-brand sales and service in a 45-mile radius en route to becoming the largest independent dealer in the state, Pruter noted. He was with the company for five years, but in 1998, the door opened wide.

“The Whirlpool store in Great Bend was closing, and the company was recruiting me to come to Great Bend and take over the one that they wanted to open up,” Pruter said. At the same time, the job of journalism teacher had opened up at Great Bend High School, which was a perfect fit for Sherry.

“I can say that I was scared to go, because there were other appliance stores already operating in Great Bend at that time,” Pruter said. “But our church pastor called us into the office and said that if the door is open that wide, we should go ahead and walk through.

A small start

Pruter’s Great Bend Appliance “three-stores-in-one” operation with its 20 employees of today began with the appliance floorspace at the front of the building. “It started with just my wife and me,” he said. Their affiliation with BrandSource expanded the nature of the inventory and Pruter acquired the floorspace to accommodate it. “When we started, it was just appliances, which people need,” Pruter said. ““Now we have our beds, which people also need, and also the furniture room, which is what people want.”

Later on, they outfitted the back into appliance repair.

“We just grew into the whole block; it just kept going,” he said.

The expansion celebrated its 19th year in March.

“It’s a challenge for people right now, hard time to start a business, but there is always hope,” Pruter said. “Coming here has been a God thing for us. It has really all worked out.”
