Panther baseball returns experience BY JIM MISUNAS jmisunas@gbtribune.com

Although Great Bend’s baseball team features no varsity veterans from 2019, the Panthers have developed a solid summer baseball program that will key their success. No one played spring baseball in 2020 because the Kansas State High School Activities Association canceled the season. The key players played baseball for the Great Bend Chiefs, who compiled a 17-15 record last summer competing against older baseball teams. Pitching records last summer were Layton Holden (3-1), Joseph Moeder (3-1), Stefan Spray (2-1), Sage Koelsch (1-0), Chayse Gruber (3-3), Paco Hernandez (1-2) and Jade Poe (0-2). SS-2B Sage Koelsch, 3B-C Brad Beck, CF3B Joseph Moeder, RF Mathew Moeder, CF Gavin Haberman, 1B Stefan Spray, 1B Chayse Gruber, LF-C Jade Poe and RF Einar Vargas gained valuable summer experience. Others projected to contribute are P/3B Layton Holden, C Matt Neiman, 2B Miguel Martinez and utility player Edwin Chavez. Beck said his “veterans,” lack high school varsity experience, but have played baseball at a high level.

GREAT BEND BASEBALL Coach Randy Beck 1—Sage Koelsch, SS/P, 11 2—Paco Hernandez, OF/P, 11 3—Layton Holden, P/3B, 12 4—Salv Garcia OF, 11 5—Matt Neiman, IF/OF/C, 12 6—Brad Beck, C/3B, 11 7—Bradley Hopkins, OF, 10 9—Colton Brack, IF/P, 9 10—Maddox Spray, IF/P, 9 12—Joesph Moeder, CF/3B, 11 13—Mathew Moeder, RF/P, 10 14—Miguel Martinez, 2B, 12 15—Edwin Chavez, utility/P, 10 16—Gavin Haberman, CF/P, 11 17—Matthew Johnson, IF/P, 9 18—Javen Stoney, IF/P, 9 21—Stefan Spray, IB/P, 11 23—Jonathan Randall, IF/OF, 11 24—Drexler Gardner, IF, 10 27—Chayse Gruber, IB/SS/P, 11 33—Jade Poe, P/LF/C, 11 35—Blaine Ramos, IF, 10 39—Einar Vargas, RF, 11 FRESHMAN TEAM 2—Connor DeLong, IF/P, 9 3—Jack Sanford, IF/P, 9 4—Alex Galindo, OF, 9 8—Coda Swanson, OF/P, 9 12—Andrew McQuade, IF, 9 13—Riley Polly, OF/P, 9 14—Xavier Ehster, IF, 9 16—Brayden Crowe, OF, 9 18—Ethan Hammeke, IF/P, 9 20—Javen Stoney, IF/P, 9 21—Andrew Neiman, IF, 9 27—Kasey Kennedy, IF/P, 9 31—Diego Sanchez, IF, 9 34—Joshua Sharpe, OF, 9

Paco Hernandez “I feel that a lot of them could be game-changers,” said Great Bend coach Randy Beck. “On the mound, Chayse Gruber and Layton Holden will log a lot of innings. We also have several other players that will give us significant mound time — Stefan Spray, Sage Koelsch, Gavin Haberman, Jade Poe, Paco Hernandez and Edwin Chavez.” The team lacks high school varsity experience, but the team will be filled with quality multi-sport

athletes. “The junior class will make up the majority of the team. We have several seniors and juniors who will contribute,” Beck said. “Although we did not get to play last spring, the summer schedule allowed us to gain valuable experience for the upcoming spring season.” Two injured players Paco Hernandez and CF3B Joseph Moeder will return during the season after recovering from basketball injuries.

Beck’s other dilemma is rainy spring weather has prevented the Panthers from working outdoors consistently to maximize their practice time. “We’re definitely tired of being stuck indoors,” Beck said. Hays High (19-2, 7-1 WAC) captured the 2019 WAC baseball title. But the Panthers handed the Indians both of their losses. Great Bend (10-11) shocked No. 1 ranked Hays High 6-2 to qualify for 5A state baseball and

spoil the Indians’ best baseball season in school history. The Panthers surprised Wichita Northwest 7-3 in the regional opener. St. Thomas Aquinas downed the Panthers 6-2 at Wichita State’s Eck Stadium. In 2018, Great Bend shut out Salina Central 3-0 and Liberal 2-0 to qualify for the 5A state baseball tournament. Shawnee Heights beat the Panthers 10-2 in their first 5A state appearance sine 2009.

Panthers’ softball must rebuild lineup BY JIM MISUNAS jmisunas@gbtribune.com

The last time the Great Bend softball team played in 2019, the Panthers lost a heartbreaking 11-10 decision to Wichita Northwest to qualify for the 5A state softball tournament. The Panthers led 10-2 and were six outs away from upsetting the topseeded Grizzlies. But the Grizzlies scored nine runs in their final two at-bats to steal a walk-off victory. Hannah Joynt delivered the game-winner with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Sparkplug Sydney Unruh is the lone vet-

eran returning from 2019, although catcher Brenna Bownes and infielder Grace Rowland gained some varsity action two years ago. Bownes drove in two runs in the regional softball championship. Pamela Bujanda also saw varsity playing time two years ago. *Not having a season last year has given this group a more unique opportunity to step up and compete for varsity playing time,” said Great Bend softball coach Carrie Minton. “We’re looking forward to having a large group of new faces on the field.” Many of the Panthers played summer softball

after they missed the 2020 spring season. “The majority of our players had the opportunity to play softball last summer,” Minton said. “This extra time on the field is always important, but even more so that we didn’t compete last season.” Jordan Turner and Breanna Ridgeway will headline the pitching staff. “We have several young ladies who are experienced pitchers, but only two have experience at the high school level,” Minton said. “We’ll look for several of them to step up and accept that leadership role in the circle.”

Minton said her biggest dilemma is fitting everyone into their best spots. “At the beginning of the season, we’ll spend time trying to fit together the pieces that will best suit us as the season progresses,” she said. “We have a lot of young ladies who are very talented. They have a great deal of potential. But it will take time and game experience.” Minton said the junior class has competed at the junior varsity level and competed in summer softball. The sophomore and freshmen classes will compete at the varsity level for the first time. Without a 2020 season,

it’s hard to gauge the Western Athletic Conference. Great Bend (13-7, 5-3 WAC) split a doubleheader against WAC champion Garden City (14-4, 7-1 WAC). “There are a lot of unknowns. Panther golf program on the rise BY JIM MISUNAS jmisunas@gbtribune.com

Two-time state qualifiers Cole Streck and Brantley Baldwin headline an experienced Great Bend golf team that returns five players who competed in the 2019 state golf tournament at Dodge City’s Mariah Hills Golf Course. All-WAC Streck (75) earned 19th medalist honors and competed with Baldwin (78), Scott Heilman (96), Cal Dunekac (97), Jayson Effertz (98) and Cayden Boese (110). The 2020 golf season was canceled by the KSHSAA due to concerns about the coronavirus. “After losing our 2020 season, we are especially excited to get the 2021 season underway. The five players returning are dedicated to improve their games and are especially motivated after not getting to play last spring,” said Great Bend coach Travis McAtee. “This year’s team has a chance to be one of the better golf teams that GBHS has had.” The Panthers will miss Jason Effertz. “We return everyone from our 2019 state team, with the exception of Jason Effertz, who is unable to play due to his injuries sustained from an accident last summer,” McAtee said. “Losing Jason hurts our overall depth, and we miss having him on our team. We think the world of Jason and wish him the best as he continues to progress through his injuries.” McAtee commented on his top varsity golfers. “Cole Streck is coming off a good summer of junior golf, where he placed second in the KGA Tour Championship. After being an All-WAC player and a state medalist, Cole will look to be a leading player in the WAC and contend at state.” “Brantley Baldwin had

Brantley Baldwin

Cole Streck a solid summer, placing well in junior tournaments. After being AllWAC honorable mention as a sophomore, he’ll move up in the WAC standings. He should shoot very good scores.” “Cal Dunekack has continued to improve his game after making some swing changes. His confidence just keeps growing. I’ve been impressed, especially with his iron play.”

“Scott Heilman is the most improved player from two years ago. Scott is a strong, athletic player who has improved his swing. He’s looking to make a name for himself. Scott’s confidence is growing, and he’ll be a huge asset.” “Cayden Bouse will provide depth and we’ll see him making great strides in his game.” McAtee’s ultimate goal

is to shoot a competitive team score May 17 at the Salina 5A regional. The top three teams qualify for the 5A state tournament May 24-25 at Newton. “After a solid summer, this group is anxious to get tournaments going,” McAtee said. “The veterans are getting a measure of what aspects of their game need work. The newcomers are building

their skills with more drillwork and repetition. We’re looking forward to a very good season at GBHS for the Panther golf team.” Newcomers feature sophomores Cameron Harbaugh, Ty Boone, Levi Stevenson, and Kamron Stude, and freshmen Bradon Suppes and Carter Young. “Our newcomers will gain valuable junior varsity experience as they continue to learn the game for the years ahead,” McAtee said. In 2018, Streck and Baldwin qualified for the 5A state tournament. Streck (85) placed 35th and Baldwin (98) finished 80th at Kansas City’s Dub’s Dread course.

Panther tennis faces rebuilding year BY JIM MISUNAS jmisunas@gbtribune.com

With no experienced varsity players, Great Bend’s tennis team will undergo a classic “rebuilding season,” after a missed 2020 spring season. All the varsity players from 2019 have graduated. Great Bend tennis coach Chris Manning is assisted by Ryan Clark.

“We’re finalizing our lineup,” Manning said. “Our roster will change as we will grow and find doubles players who complement each other.” Manning said the lack of varsity experience doesn’t change how the early season progresses. “I start off every year going over the basics, so we have a strong foundation to build from,” Manning said.

Panther swimmers seek 18th WAC title BY JIM MISUNAS jmisunas@gbtribune.com

The Great Bend girls (442 points) kept their tradition rolling with an unprecedented 17th consecutive Western Athletic Conference girls swimming championship at Great Bend in 2019. The Panthers, like everyone else, missed the 2020 season because the Kansas State High School Activities Association canceled the season. “The girls are extremely excited to be back in the pool and we are anxious to see what this season holds,” said Great Bend coach Kari Carper. “For these girls there is definitely a renewed love for the sport. Not having a season last year due to COVID hurt us, but we have talked extensively about putting it behind us and focusing on this season.” Two-time WAC champion Aubrey Snapp won the 100 freestyle (57.98) and she also won the 200 WAC freestyle (2:10.69) after a runner-up WAC finish. Ruth Williams won the WAC 100 butterfly (1:08.8). Returning from firstplace WAC relays are th 200 freestyle (1:51.78) with Zoe Jerke, Ruth Williams and Aubrey Snapp; the first-place medley relay (2:34.27) with Anna Popp and Grace Dougherty returning; and the winning 400 relay (4:12.35) with Jerke, Williams and Aubrey Snapp returning. “We’ll have a very strong team this season between our returning swimmers and the new freshmen class,” Carper said. “Typically, we’re really strong in a few events. However, we should have strong competitors in every event. We’ll have a very hungry freshmen and sophomore group.” The returning veterans who keyed a 17th consec-

Great Bend soccer rebuilds program BY JIM MISUNAS jmisunas@gbtribune.com

It’s a challenge for the Great Bend girls soccer team after missing the 2020 spring season. None of the current freshmen or sophomores have played high school soccer. Third-year Great Bend girls soccer coach Margarita Ayala features a 32 player-roster, creating competition for varsity positions. The Panthers had a 6-11 season last year in the competitive Western Athletic Conference. “It’s tough missing last season, because outside of our juniors and seniors, we’re still getting to see what the players are capable of doing,” Ayala said. “Many of the players are new. We’re figuring out what they can do and the best spot on the field for the players.” The Panthers’ starting unit featured forwards Arely Reyes, Evelyn Luna and Yulisa Valdez; center midfielders Joselin Pando, Quetali Garcia and Jazmin Calzada; goalie Casandra Enriguez and defenders MaKenna Tin-

better conditioning from the players,” Ayala said. “We can work with that. It’s a matter of putting together out defense, our midfield and our forwards so they can work together as a team. It’ll take time.” Ayala played soccer

at Barton Community College and has coached recreational, Great Bend Middle School and Great Bend High School soccer. Ayala works as a personal trainer at a gym. She also owns a certification on sports nutrition. She is assisted by Kino Adame

State hurdler headlines Cardinal track BY JIM MISUNAS jmisunas@gbtribune.com

HOISINGTON – Twotime state qualifier Samantha Colson headlines the Hoisington Cardinal track program after placing ninth and 11th (100m hurdles) and 10th (300m hurdles) the past two years. “Samantha has great potential in the 3A hurdles,” said Hoisington coach Dan Schmidt. “She’ll be very competitive. She just missed the medal stand in 2019.” Schmidt believes the Cardinal girls will be competitive in the Central Kansas League and has an opportunity to push for a top five 3A team finish. Other talented athletes are Suzanna Schneider (sprints, relays, javelin), Jaci Guthrie (1,600m, relays), and Alyx Lamatsch (400m, relays). “These girls all competed very well at regionals and scored team points,” Schmidt said. “We have very solid girls coming back. Samantha Coulson (center) Miller should all score points. Macy Hanzlick should be a huge plus. She ran sprints at the 1A state meet in 2019 for Wilson. With 30 girls out, our depth should lead to a great deal of success in meets.” Ian Doss, (long distance, relays); Dylan

Richards (long distance, relays); Cade Mason (sprints, relays); Chase Robinson (sprints, relays); and Gabriel Hipp (long distance, relays) competed at the 2019 state meet in relays. “Our long distance runners could be special,” said Schmidt. “Our relays

look like they could be very solid. We’ll enjoy great numbers with 29 athletes out. But many of our talented athletes have not run a single high school track meet. Our goal is to score as a top 15 team at the 3A state meet.” Schmidt is thankful the

Cardinals are back on the track after seeing last year canceled by the Kansas State High School Activities Association. “It’s great we get a chance to compete again,” he said. “COVID was not kind to some really good athletes last year.”

Newman signee headlines HHS tennis BY JIM MISUNAS jmisunas@gbtribune.com

HOISINGTON — Hoisington High’s tennis team features Kansas Newman signee Braden Mooney, who will embark on a high-profile senior season. Mooney teamed with Keaton Klug for a fifthplace Central Kansas League finish with a 9-6 victory over Hillsboro’s Noah Bartels/Aidan Unruh in 2019. At regionals, Ellsworth’s Caden

Whetzel-Dalton Zelenka downed Mooney/Klug 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Ellsworth’s Adam Vehring/David Wesseler edged Mooney/Klug 6-4, 6-2 in another hard-fought match. In 2018, Mooney (1810) placed sixth at No. 2 singles in the Central Kansas League, losing to Pratt’s Jacob Brucks. Central Plains’ J.J. Heredia defeated Mooney 6-1, 6-2 in the 3-1A tennis regional. WaKeeney Trego’s

Andrew Mejia downed Hoisington’s Evan Foltz 9-3 at 2019 regionals. Foltz placed sixth in the Central Kansas League meet with a 9-1 loss to Haven’s Nathan Wells. Mooney and Foltz will play Hoisington’s singles spots. “Braden Mooney has committed to Newman University to play tennis next year so we’re looking to push him this season,” said Hoisington coach Kerry Mooney. “He and

Foltz are the top two. They are helping the others play better. We are working on the basics right now. We’ll start working into strategies and match play.” Playing doubles will be Mason Haxton, Hunter Morris, Ryan Woydziak and Chase Maier. “I believe we’ll be competitive,” Mooney said. “At this point Mooney and Foltz will play singles. Haxton, Morris, Woydziak and Maier will play doubles. That could change as

we get into the season.” Coach Mooney is pleased to be competing after the 2020 season was canceled. “My outlook is just the fact we’re able to be out competing,” he said. “I hated losing last year for the boys. Being competitive and constantly improving will be our goals the entire year.” HOISINGTON TENNIS SENIORS—Mason Haxton, Hunter Morris, Braden Mooney, Ryan Woydziak

Hoisington features solid baseball trio BY JIM MISUNAS jmisunas@gbtribune.com

HOISINGTON — The Hoisington Cardinal baseball team was six outs away from a postseason victory when it all unraveled in 2019. The Cardinals led Minneapolis 3-0 when the Lions scored 11 runs in a hard-fought 11-3 setback at Concordia. The Cardinals (13-7, 10-6 CKL) were competitive in the 2019 Central Kansas League. The Cardinals feature 3B/C/P Holt Hanzlick, SS/C/P Cole Steinert and IB/P Quentin Boxberger as veteran players. “We’re returning a good

group of seniors who will be a big part of our team’s success,” said Hoisington coach Eric Steiner. “Holt Hanzlick and Quentin Boxberger along with Cole Steinert will lead the way. Boxberger and Hanzlick will give a good one/two punch; one from the right side and one from the left side off the mound. Cole Steinert will do some of the catching for us as well. They will be followed by a core of young guys. There are about eight pitchers who will be in the rotation.” Outside of his senior trio, the Cardinals will rely on younger varsity players who missed last season. “We’ll have a good

mix of old and young baseball players. Overall, our team is going to be fairly young,” Steiner said. “We’ll play some ‘small ball’ on the offensive side and play fundamentally sound on defense. There will be a learning curve that we’ll go through with our young team. We’re looking to be competitive in all our games. The boys are excited about the opportunity to play baseball this year after missing last year.” Steiner said the Cardinals missed valuable experience. “The loss of the 2020 season hurt Hoisington because we had good se-

niors that we lost,” Steiner said. “Just losing that year of experience for all the underclassmen hurt as well.” Coach Steiner played baseball at Hoisington from 1997-2001. He served an assistant baseball coach at Hugoton from 2006-2008. Steiner coached high school baseball at Liberal from 2008-2015. He worked as head junior varsity coach and coached 14U Babe Ruth baseball.

Cardinal softball a CKL contender BY JIM MISUNAS jmisunas@gbtribune.com

HOISINGTON — Hoisington’s softball program was poised for its best season in school history when the 2020 pandemic canceled the season. The Cardinals (174, 14-2 CKL) lost to Beloit 6-5 in extra innings for a 3A state berth in 2019. “We came so close to advancing to the 3A state tournament, losing on a walk-off in extra innings. It was heartbreaking, especially for seniors knowing their careers were over,” said Hoisington coach Tim Boxberger.

“There were sad emojis texted once the news spread there wouldn’t be a 2020 season. It could’ve been the best season ever for HHS softball. “We have a great group of returning starters and we’re excited for the season,” Boxberger said. “We feature a solid group of sophomores and freshmen who will be a big part of our success. We want to reach our team goals for 2021.” OF-IB Gracie Aylward (.439) delivered 14 extrabase hits in 2019. Pitcher/ utility Kadence Urban (.415) drilled two homers with 23 RBIs. Pitcher/util-

ity Kassidy Nixon (.627) ripped four homers and 26 RBIs and compiled a 6-0 record and 3.24 earned run average. Keeley Wolf (.406) had 15 steals and Shaylah Kempke batted .300 in 2019. “Our seniors and juniors put up impressive offensive numbers the last time we had a season,” Boxberger said. “Kadence Urban, Gracie Aylward and Kassidy Nixon earned all league honors as freshmen. Nixon received all state honors. This year’s senior class Keeley Wolf, Addy Smith, Chandra Ehler and Rylie Bailey contributed as well.”

The pitching staff is juniors Kadence Urban and Kassidy Nixon, sophomore Emma Willesden and freshmen Jordyn Boxberger and Addy Ogle. “We should have solid pitching going four/five deep,” he said. “We’ll lean on upperclassman, but I’m expecting contributions up-and-down the roster. There’s talent out there, which will make competition a lot of fun for the coaches.” Boxberger said just missing state in 2019 and no 2020 season provides extra incentive. “The girls on the 2021

team remembers what happened on the last game that was played,” he said. “We were close to advancing to state, so there’s motivation to finish the job. It should take care of itself. We can compete with anyone.” Boxberger said many of the returning players competed during the summer. “A high school summer league was formed,” he said. “It softened the blow, but I’m not sure the pain has gone away, or if it will ever go away.” The Cardinals are a co-op softball program with Central Plains and Hoisington.

Nicholson has shot 84 and 87 at regionals the past two times. Nicholson’s father Mike played golf for Hoisington coach Bruce Cooper in the 1980s. “Drew has impressed

me. The Larned Indians celebrate.

Indian baseball expects to contend BY JIM MISUNAS jmisunas@gbtribune.com

LARNED — The Larned Indians are loaded for a rebound season after the 2020 spring season was canceled. Veteran pitchers Aidan Smyth (44), and Dillan Smith (1-3) bolster a pitching staff that features a pair of quality starters from 2019. Concordia beat Larned 6-1 in 2019 regional play despite brilliant defense by the Indians. Pitcher Smyth picked off three baserunners. Catcher Jack Stelter threw out a baseunner. First baseman Logan Erway turned a double play. The Indians (10-9, 8-8 CKL) were swept by CKL champion Nickerson, but split doubleheaders with Pratt, Hillsboro and Hoisington in 2019. The Indians return Aidan Smyth, Jack Stelter, Logan Erway and Dillan Smith from a young squad two years ago. The Indians return eight seniors and three juniors who gained experience last summer. “If we get quality starts from our rotation and timely hitting while playing solid defense, we’ll compete,” said Larned coach Chad Erway. “We have a good corp of nine seniors providing experience and a deep bullpen. We feel good about having

compete in CKL. We’re looking forward to getting back on the field and having fun.” Erway said the loss of 2020 has forced teams to start at square one. “The loss of the season had a detrimental effect physically and psychologically that is hard to measure,” he said. “But you can see the negative aspects through the loss of practice and games, but also affected summer baseball programs.”

a quality year. Our juniors and seniors won the Class A Junior Legion state tournament in Topeka a few years ago.” Smith and Smyth will anchor the pitching staff. “Dillan Smith and Aidan Smyth will be our top starters,” Erway said. “Dillan is a command guy with three quality pitches who changes speeds and locates his pitches. Aidan is more of a power pitcher with a quality slider as

an out pitch. We will call upon Christian Murray, Jack Stelter, Gavin Alvarez and others to close games. Our pitching depth should be our best asset for the 2021 season.” The poor spring weather has slowed the hitting momentum. “ We’re not where we should be this time of year due to weather conditions,” Erway said. “Jack Stelter and Logan Erway will provide some power and drive in runs. Our hitters should perform. We’re not a big power team. We’ll have to manufacture runs and continue to be aggressive on the

basepaths.” Larned’s defense should be competitive. “We’ll be solid on the defensive side of the ball,” Erway said. “When our pitchers are consistent throwing strikes, our defense will follow suit.” The 2020 spring season was canceled by the

Kansas State High School Activities Association due to the coronavirus. “We were disappointed that we did not have a season last year,” Erway said. “We would’ve had a quality team and missed out. However, with our senior leadershipm we’ll be successful and

LARNED — No team was hit harder from missing the 2020 softball season than the Larned Indians. The Indians potentially would’ve returned an experienced team. At least seven other experienced players, including five seniors, declined to compete in softball after missing out on the 2020 spring season. Instead, senior catcher/ outfielder Shaylee Martin (.362) and senior first baseman/ pitcher Nikki Taylor (4-5, 1 save) offer the Indians their only experienced players from the 2019 softball season. “Shaylee Martin, our senior catcher and Nikki Taylor, our senior pitcher, are our top returning players,” said Larned coach Amy Wilson. “They are the only returning starters/ letter-winners. We do add Aspyn Whittington to the pitching staff.” Martin led the Indians in hitting, RBIs and extra-base hits in 2019. Taylor pitched the Indians past Hesston, Hillsboro, Ellinwood and Pratt. Taylor’s double singled home Martin with the game-winning run in a 7-6 victory over Hillsboro. Sylvan Grove downed the

LARNED — Larned senior Reed McNett is the Indians’ lone veteran after the 2020 golf season was canceled. McNett has placed 19th at regionals (100) and 45th (125) the past two times. He placed 19th at the Central Kansas League meet (99) in 2018.

McNett is off to a slow start due to a broken hand during the basketball season. “Reed will be a solid player,” said Larned coach Dan Collins, who is assisted by Israel Hagerman. The missed 2020 spring season has set every team back a step. “Players haven’t competed since 2019, so everyone’s in the same

shape,” Collins said. “The last two classes haven’t competed for two years. I imagine scores will be higher starting the spring season.” Easton Fitzpatrick leads a eight first-year golfers. “Fitzpatrick has played junior golf, so he shows promise,” Collins said. “The younger players are learning and getting better each day. We’ve got two

good sophomores.” Collins believes that chipping and putting are way more important than hitting a tee shot. Collins stresses the basic fundamentals of the short game, which takes up the majority of early practice time. “We start with the basics of putting and chipping,” Collins said. “Then, we learn to hit a

Pawnee Heights Tiger track offers promise BY JIM MISUNAS jmisunas@gbtribune.com

ROZEL – Two-time state qualifier Jaden Carlson missed the opportunity for a recordbreaking junior season. She missed her junior year after back-to-back 1A state ap-pearances in the long jump (fifth, seventh) and 800 meters (sixth, ninth). The loss of the 2020 season prevented Carlson from improving her events during the lost season. She holds the high jump school record (17-2). Coach Rick Carlson said Jaden would’ve contended for 1A state track medals in the long jump and 800 meters. “The loss of the 2020 season was very hard for the athletes and coaches,” said Pawnee Heights coach Rick Carlson. “All we can do is continue to build off of the success from two years ago. We’ll continue to work hard during the 2021 season. Both teams have good experience with underclassmen who have potential that should make for a successful season. The upperclassmen will build on their experience and success from the 2019 regional and state meet.”

Distance runners key Eagle track BY JIM MISUNAS jmisunas@gbtribune.com

ELLINWOOD — Ellinwood’s qualify distance runners have keyed backto-back Central Prairie League track championships for the Eagle girls. Ellinwood scored 120 points for first place after scoring 94 points in 2018. Two-time Ellinwood state medal-winner Erin Hammeke has placed fourth (5:37.15) and ninth (5:39.75) in the 1,600 meters and fourth (12:22.29) and seventh (12:07.84) in the 3,200 meters her first two years at state. Ellinwood’s Ashtin Klepper placed fourth in the 800 meters (2:28.86). Klepper won the 800 at the Central Prairie League (2:30.44) and finished third in the 1,600. Hammeke, Klepper and Daphne Doll return from placing 12th and 16th in the 2A state 3,200-meter relays the past two times. “Erin Hammeke and Ashtin Klepper lead the way in the distance events,” Cherry said. “They are great teammates and that will make the other girls step up as well. Their leadership and experience is going to set the bar for all our girls to follow. They will be very strong in events from the 400, 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters. They’ll be asked to compete on several relays.” The Eagles feature high quality athletes. “We have small numbers overall as a girls team, but we have strong athletes in the right place to make an impact,” Cherry said. “Overall, our girls are going to be in the mix for a league title and

league to battle in this year. I‘m optimistic they will compete and give us a chance when the league meet comes along.” Cherry said the Eagles are putting 2020 in their rear-view mirror. “We’re looking forward to watching continuous improvement and get back competing. We hope that we have success. But we’re all excited to have a track and field season again. The tough part is going to remember that it’s been two years since we’ve done this. Our athletes want to make sure they improve on those memories, but we have to remind them that it might take a while to get there. Losing that season was tough. But we’re excited about the growth that we’re going to make as we get back into the swing of things.” PAST STATE QUALIFIERS 800m—4—Ashtin Klepper, 2:28.86 1,600m—4—Erin Hammeke, 5:37.15; 9—Hammeke, 5:39.75 3,200m—4—Erin Hammeke, 12:22.29; 7—Hammeke, 12:07.84 3,200m relay—12—Ellinwood, 11:10.5 (Erin Hammeke, Ashtin Klepper, Daphne Doll); 16— Ellinwood, 11:43.06 (Erin Hammeke, Daphne Doll)

We’re excited to see how she fares in the high jump. She’ll compete in several relays and different individual events. She’ll do anything to help the team. Cherry said the Ellinwood boys are young, but will be athletic.

Eagle baseball ready for breakout year BY JIM MISUNAS jmisunas@gbtribune.com

ELLINWOOD – The breakout season for Ellinwood baseball was delayed a year when the coronavirus shut down the 2020 campaign. “We had an opportunity with experienced players who’d been starting since their freshman year to do some damage last year,” said Ellinwood baseball coach Trevor Bieberle. “Those guys missed their final opportunity to make a major impact on the program. We lost experience with our young group. Fortunately, we were able to have a summer season to catch up.” In 2019, Ellinwood (3-14) lost to Little River 18-3 at regionals after back-to-back one-win seasons. In 2018, the Eagles (1-18) upset Lincoln 2-0 on Tyler Knop’s six-hit shutout. In 2017, Ellinwood won one game

— a thrilling 12-8 regional victory over Minneola on Luke Wondra’s goahead base hit. Bieberle is assisted by Mike Niles and Dave Schofield. The Eagles feature a trio of baseball-savvy players — senior Gage Hosman and super sophomores Tyler Stuhlsatz and Parker Scheck. “We have three players who have experience playing at a high baseball level,” Bieberle said. “Gage will step up and replace our outgoing seniors as a leader on-andoff the field. We know exactly what we’re going to get. He works hard in practice and expects others to do the same. His offense will be a huge boost. I’m excited to see him take on the challenge as a pitcher and thrive. Gage will start games and be a deep reliever.” This past summer Hosman hit .440 and earned a 2.73 ERA in brief pitch-

ing appearances. Tyler Stuhlsatz is projected to be a middleof-the-order batter and a starting pitcher. He batted .529 with a 3-0 pitching record and 1.06 ERA. “Tyler is well beyond his years as far as baseball talent goes,” Bieberle said. “He has feel for the game, comfort level and confidence of an upperclassman. Tyler has the potential to be our ace and win a lot of games. He has great command and great pitches that can be used to throw opposing teams off. He will be heavily relied on.” Parker Scheck enjoyed a .438 summer batting average with some brief pitching experience. “Parker enjoys success at every sport he’s played,” Bieberle said. “He has raw talent and I’m excited to see him develop into a dangerous 3-tool player.” Parker is a hardthrowing sophomore with

experience pitching at a high level.” Trey Schofield earned some varsity time as a freshman and Bieberle expects a good season. “Our top of our batting lineup is experienced and talented,” he said. “They have an opportunity to be dangerous. We’ll start somewhere between three-to-five freshmen. It’ll be a challenge trying to produce immediately. The freshmen group is very talented. This will create a fun atmosphere that will benefit our program.” Bieberle believes the starting pitchers will be competitive. “Our top three pitchers have experience pitching in high pressure situations against varsity talent,” he said. “We have the opportunity to win most games we play. We have freshman who will have to learn on the fly. They’ll be ready for the challenge. I’m excited to watch them

take that on and improve from game- to-game.” Bieberle said the Eagles must rely on a team effort with all the players contributing. “We have freshmen who are getting a lot thrown at them. They have potential to be very good, but we will have a learning curve when it comes to understanding the game. They’ve been putting in great work. I want to imagine how good they’ll be by the end of the season.” Other key contributors will be Trey Schofield, Koy Behnke, Mason Moore, Bryan Jaske and Alek Brack. “This is a rebuilding year, but not a total overhaul,” Bieberle said. “We’ll still compete in games and have opportunities to win if we are playing our best ball at the time. We have an opportunity to be very good by the end of the season. By the time, we play regionals with our top

three-to-five pitchers and our improvement offensively, we could be a really tough out. We’ll focus on getting better every day and let the record take care of itself.” ELLINWOOD ROSTER 3—Tyler Stuhlsatz, OF-P—10 5—Logan Panning, SS/ OF/P/C—9 6—Koy Behnke, 1B/OF/P/C—10 8—Chase Gibson, 2B/OF/P—9 9—Alek Brack, SS/3B/OF/P/C—9 10—Cooper Hosman, 1B/OF/P—9 11—Parker Scheck, SS/P/C—10 13—Tony Ortiz, 2B/SS/OF/P—9 14—Bryan Jaske, 1B/SS/3B/ OF/P-C—9 15—Blake Kuhn, OF—10 16—Brayden Williams, ; 2B/SS/ OF/P/C—9 18—Gage Hosman, 3B/P—12 19—Rylan Wirtz, 3B/OF/P—9 22—Mason Moore, 1B/2B/P—9 23—Trey Schofield, 1B/2B/ OF/P—11 24—Morgan Hoeffner, 2B/OF/P—9 33—Alex Ortiz, 1B/OF—12 34—Preston McCord, OF—11 42—Daulton Gowdy, OF—12 Trace Ritterhouse, 2B/OF/P/C—9 ELLINWOOD SCHEDULE 3-26—ELL-SALINE 4-1—at Pratt Skyline 4-13—ELLSWORTH 4-16—at Ellis 4-20—at Hays-TMP 4-27—HOISINGTON 4-30—at Russell 5-3—ELLIS 5-6—at Lincoln 5-11—LITTLE RIVER 5-17/5-20—at 2-1A regional

ELLINWOOD — The Ellinwood softball team must rebuild with senior CF-IB Anahi Mendez and senior LF Eliana Hernandez the only players returning from the 2019 team. Mendez batted second and Hernandez also started the regional game. Ellinwood’s roster features 12 freshmen and sophomores who have never played high school softball. Ellinwood softball coach Brian Hosfelt is assisted by Shelbi Frees. The Eagles (11-8) lost 2-1 to Ellsworth in a 2-1A regional game in 2019. Ellinwood pitcher Teigan Torres threw six shutout innings when Sara Klein and Sierra Kratz delivered the tying and game-winning RBIs. “None of our girls have pitched, but Anahi Mendez is lights years ahead,” Hosfelt said. “She’s a great softball player. We’re blessed to have our two seniors Mendez and Hernandez provide leadership and help our younger players learn the game.” Ellinwood coach Hosfelt said the pitchers have shown good growth from the first practice. Catchers Caylee Rowan and Mendez are also learning that challenging defensive position. Mendez will share pitching duties with Brittany Simpson, Gabby Jacobs and Hernandez. “We’ve got no one who has pitched or caught, so they’re learning as they go,” Hosfelt said. “It’s a challenge teaching the girls how to pitch. I’m sure they’ll get better. It will take some time to get better. We’re encouraging our pitchers to throw strikes

and make the batter put the ball in play.” The lack of softball experience is the tallest challenge. “We’ve got several players who haven’t played softball and our sophomores and freshmen have never played high school softball,” he said. “It was a blessing when we got our first doubleheader rained out. It gave us some extra days outdoors.” Assistant coach Shelbi Frees has provided valuable coaching. “Shelbi played softball at Ellinwood and she played college softball,” Hosfelt said. “We’ll make strides.” Ellinwood has stressed hitting off a pitching machine to maximize their practice time. “We’ve got four or five girls who are swinging the bat,” he said. “They’ve made good progress. We’ll put the ball in play with bunts when we had to.” ELLINWOOD ROSTER 1—Kadie Bailey, CF, 9 2—Emma Nienke, LF, 9 4—Caylee Rowan, C, 9 7—Lauren Knop, RF, 10 8—Hannah Winget, RF, 9 9—Brooklin Morgan, SS, 10 10—Anahi Mendez, P/C 12 11—Madisyn Schlochtermeier, 1B/2B, 10 12—Morgan Shinliver, LF, 9 13—Kiley Stevenson, RF, 10 14—Brittany Simpson, 2B/P, 10 15—Gabby Jacobs, 1B/P, 10 16—Kiley Troyer, RF, 9 21—Eliana Hernandez, P/3B, 12 ELLINWOOD SOFTBALL Coach Brian Hosfelt 4-1—at Pratt Skyline, 4 4-6—at Wichita Independent, 4:30 4-13—Ness City, 4 4-15—at Ness City/Stanton County 4-16—at Ellis, 4 4-27—Hoisington, 4 4-30—at Russell, 4 5-3—Ellis, 4 5-6—at Sylvan Grove, 4 5-11—Little River, 4 5-17-21—at 2A regional 5-27-28—at 2A state, Pratt

ELLINWOOD — After Ellinwood students and parents expressed interest, the USD 495 school board approved boys/girls golf for the 2021 spring season. Ellinwood coach Greg Maxwell was rehired as the Eagles’ golf coach after previously serving in that capacity. “It’s been an easy transition back into golf ” Maxwell said. “We have a lot of necessary things in place for the sport to be successful.” Two players have golf experience. The others are newcomers, includ-

ing several dual-sport athletes. “Drew Heinz and Mason Moore have summer tournament experience. They potential to earn trips to state,” Maxwell said. “We could potentially make it interesting. But for this year, we want to establish ourselves as a respected program that will maximize our opportunities. Our long-term goal is to return to the state tournament.” Maxwell said his first goal is to encourage players to enjoy the game. “My focus is to generate a passion for the game in the younger players,” he said. “If they develop a love for the sport, they

will develop into strong competitors. They’ve been excellent to work with. There are life lessons to be learned from golf, one of the things I enjoy most. They’ve responded well and are doing whatever it takes to earn respect and develop their game.” Maxwell has started with the basics, emphasizing rules and a mental capacity for the game. “We’ve spent the majority of our time on the mindset and mentality of the game,” Maxwell said. “We spend time on rules and concepts to give them the confidence and ability to interpret the rules and hold themselves accountable. As far as fundamen-

tals, we’re evaluating to see where we are in terms of skills. Then, we break down skills and techniques to develop their potential.”

ELLINWOOD – It’s been two years, but Ellinwood’s Caleb Robl and Nathan Ringwald will headline the Eagles’ tennis program. Caleb Robl has played No. 1 and No. 2 singles his first two seasons. Robl lost 9-0 to Sterling’s Rhain Isaac 9-0 in the 2019 regional. Ringwald teamed with Shawn Weber in a 9-0 regional loss to Hesston’s Isaac Decker/Jeb Carlson in the 2019 regional. Ellsworth’s Alex Maxwell/Dalton Zelenka downed Ringwald’s doubles team in the 2018 regional. “My goal is to finish in the top three in a few meets,” said Ellinwood coach Tyson Revell. “We’ll see if we can qualify a guy or two from regionals. The Hesston regional will be loaded, but that’s no excuse to not get out

there and try.” Revell said the missed 2020 spring season hurts everyone. “The absence of the 2020 season affected all of our guys one way or another,” Revell said. “The experienced players missed a year of high competition that would drive them to be a better tennis players. The younger players missed out on instruction and confidence to compete after the middle school level.” Revell expects Robl and Ringwald to be the primary top players. “I expect everyone to compete for a varsity spot,” he said. “We’re very young, but we do have upside in the future. I want to help build these guys so they can start gaining confidence at an early stage and get used to high-level matches.” Revell said he wants his players to maximize their

ability and learn to compete. “My overall assessment of the 2021 season is to compete,” he said. “We’re young, but that shouldn’t scare them into not competing every day. I want to see a work ethic in that will help them on and off the court.” ELLINWOOD ROSTER SENIORS—Caleb Robl, Nathan

Tennis state runner-up must rebuild BY JIM MISUNAS jmisunas@gbtribune.com

CLAFLIN – After a missed 2020 tennis season, Central Plains must rebuild its program after three consecutive state runner-up finishes. The Oilers finished as 3-1A state runners-up in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Central Plains tennis coach Gary Bittner celebrated his third

Class 3-1A boys state championship trophy in 2016. Bittner coached Claflin High School to boys state tennis championships in 2003 and 2007. No varsity players return after the 2020 season was canceled by the Kansas State High School Activities Association. The Oilers’ starting lineup will feature

freshman Peyton Ryan at No. 1 singles and Hunter Green at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles Karter Beck/Michael Menges and No. 2 doubles Isiah Jensen/Jacob Togersen. The Oilers will compete at the 3-1a tennis regional May 7-8 at Dodge City. The top four singles and doubles finishers qualify for the state tournament. “We have a hard-

working group that loves to play tennis,” said Bittner, who has coached 38 years. “It will be fun to see the leadership of the older players and see the growth in the newcomers. I hope our players who lost a season hit a lot of tennis ball over the summer.” Bittner said the best aspect about a young and inexperienced team is they are bound to

Each player needs to put in the necessary work and hit the ball with confidence. They must be prepared for the challenges they will face. All of the tournaments we play are important.”

CPHS track features quality relay teams BY JIM MISUNAS jmisunas@gbtribune.com

CLAFLIN — Two-time Central Plains state qualifier Cole Lamatsch headlines an Oiler track squad that will reload with quality young athletes after a missed 2020 season. Lamatsch has placed sixth (10:46.08) and 12th (10:47.96) in two state track appearances. Lamatsch placed fourth in the 1,600 (5:00.43) in the Central Prairie League meet. Relay runners Jennah Jeffrey and Callie Zink ran on the CPL champion 3,200-meter relay (10:42.2) that qualified for 1A state twice. Central Plains track coach Dustin Robison starts his 11th season as head track coach with a young team that will push to improve every day. “As a coaching staff, we expect the athletes to show up ready to go to work and make themselves better every day,” he said. “Medals are great, but we are here to get better. We want to improve every day and get better. We have a very competitive league. Every meet that we attend and see league schools, will be a tough meet. The Oiler girls enjoy a nice mix of athletes from each class. “The group has potential. We look for our three seniors and three juniors to be strong leaders,” Robison said. “We had a young girl’s

team last season, and return all of them, along with gaining freshmen. We’re excited to see them develop.” Seven sophomores headline the boys team. “The boys return a young squad, but we expect big things from them,” Robison said. Robison said he wants to see every athlete getting better every day. “Success in life is about building character and pushing yourself even though you may not see instant gratification,” he said. “You’ve got to work harder for everything even if you see a little improvement. You can’t days off.” PAST OILER STATE QUALFIERS 3,200m—6—Cole Lamatsch, 20:46.08; 12—Lamatsch, 10:47.96 3,200m relay—6—Central Plains, 10:53.98 (Jennah Jeffrey); 9—Central Plains, 10:43.7 (Callie Zink) OILER ROSTER SENIORS— Matthew Donecker, Jennah Jeffrey, Ben Gibson, Tyler Holmes, Jacob Oberle, Cass Stout, Adrianne Togersen, Brian Whiterock, Callie Zink JUNIORS—Kerrick Benavidez, Denver Crenshaw, Cole Lamatsch, Dawson McNeal, Riley Thompson, Nora VanScyoc SOPHOMORES—Brynna Hammeke, Elizeia Knapp-Blehm, Kyla Metro, Joseph Bunch, Michael Laymon, Evan Stratmann, Jake Sturn NINTH-GRADERS—Lauren Oeser, Taylor Sheehy, Conner Freis, Blaine Hickel, Hunter Klima OILER SCHEDULE 3-30—at Larned JV, 3 4-1—at LaCrosse, 3 4-9—at Lyons Wheaton Relays, 3:30 4-13—at Ellsworth, 3:30 4-20—at Russell, 10:30 4-27—at Hoisington, 3:30 5-4—at Tescott, 3 5-7—at Ellinwood, 4 5-13—Central Prairie at LaCrosse, 3 5-21—at 1A regional 5-29—at 1A state, Wichita State
