CATCHING

Sockeye salmon is commonly known as red salmon. Sockeye get this color from a carotenoid called astaxanthin, an antioxidant found in abundance in their wild diet of shrimp, krill, and zooplankton. It is a wild-caught species with habitats in and around Alaska, and as far south as the Pacific Northwest.

SUSTAINABILITY

Sockeye salmon comes from fisheries that are sustainably managed and have responsible fishing practices. This helps protect fish stocks and the marine ecosystem for future generations.

IN-HOUSE PRODUCTION

All products have been produced in-house by Neerlandia-Urk since inception of the business. It has been one of the leading fish processing companies in Urk for almost half a century. Over 200 employees are dedicated to the processing and supply of fish.

In 2000, Neerlandia-Urk moved to new premises with an ultramodern fish processing facility with its own deepfreeze installation and storage of deep-frozen products. Much fish is filleted by hand by competent professionals who have grown up with fish. Besides North Sea fish, Neerlandia-Urk also processes a large volume of salmon, as well as fish caught in the North Atlantic Ocean around Greenland and Canada and the Bering Sea of Alaska. Neerlandia-Urk has direct contacts with the producers there. Most products are transported to our clients all over the world, like the United States, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Scandinavia, within 48 hours.

Thanks to in-house production, we are able to produce in accordance with the most stringent criteria and we guarantee top quality.

Further processing also takes place in-house.

Plaice products are sent to our clients fresh and deepfrozen, with Italy and England being the biggest markets.

Neerlandia-Urk is located in the European flatfish centre with a weekly supply of plaice.

Fish is transported across the whole of Europe by road.

Neerlandia-Urk is situated close to Schiphol Airport and the Port of Rotterdam for export to the United States and the rest of the world.

FLYSHOOT FISH

Neerlandia-Urk has partnered with the Z-300 ‘Sola Gratia’ fishing vessel. This ship is used for various forms of sustainable fishing, fly shooting in winter and twin-rigging in the summer period.

Neerlandia-Urk has a selected assortment of flyshoot fishing. This sustainable fishing method guarantees fish of the best quality because the fish only stays in the net for a very short time. This fishing is practiced in parts of the North Sea and The English Channel.

Treating our natural resources responsibly so future generations can benefit from the food sources that nature offers us. This is Neerlandia-Urk’s point of departure for production.

SUSTAINABILITY

Red gurnard and whiting comes from fisheries that are sustainably managed and have responsible fishing practices. This helps protect fish stocks and the marine ecosystem for future generations. Both stocks are managed at European level.

FISHING TECHNIQUES

BEAMTRAWL/SUMWING

An iron tube holds the nets in place. Chains are attached to this to frighten the flatfish and draw them into the nets.

FLYSHOOT

A shot is set with two lines and a net. It is sailed a round and hauled back in at the end of the round.

TWINRIG/QUADRIG

2 (twin) or 4 (quad) nets are used at the stern of the vessel. And 2 or 4 shearboards that create clouds of dust to scare the fish and bring them into the nets.

ALASKA

FLATFISH

Neerlandia-Urk has started to import flatfish directly from the United States since December 2021. Currently, there are major stock shortages due to the stagnation in traditional seafood supplies. Therefore, the processing of rock sole, yellowfin sole, Alaska plaice etc., will be started. There is already great interest and a large number of applications.

Neerlandia’s product range will initially consist of American flatfish species caught in the Pacific Ocean. The catch area FAO 67 near Alaska.

The freezing of Pacific flatfish takes place directly on board the American trawlers. After the catch, the fish is immediately frozen and packed in transport boxes, so that it retains the highest possible quality.

The big advantage is that the ship can continue fishing until the hold is full. With greater distances and stormy weather conditions in Alaska, this is economically advantageous and above all sustainable.

The product range consists of:

YELLOWFIN SOLE (Limanda aspera)

This Pacific species of dab is comparable to Dutch dab from the North Sea in terms of flavour and structure. The quality, however, is slightly lower than that of North Sea fish. All Yellowfin sole is MSC certified.

ALASKA PLAICE (Pleuronectes quadrituberculatus)

This Pacific plaice species is comparable to Dutch plaice from the North Sea in terms of structure. However, the quality and taste is slightly lower compared to the variety from the North Sea. All Alaske plaice is MSC certified.

ROCKSOLE (Lepidopsetta bilineata)

It has a mild flavour and a firm texture. The name sole is somewhat confusing as it is a type of plaice. In Germany it is known as Pacific plaice and in Italy as Pacific flounder. All rocksole is MSC certified.
