Co-sponsored by the Benjamin Gaither Center and the Asbury Methodist Village, the event includes music and dance performances, turban tying, henna designs, and traditional food tasting. Transportation to and from Asbury is provided for members. The bus leaves the center at 4:25 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. and picks up from Asbury at 6:45 p.m. and 7 p.m. Free. Registration required. Membership:

If a person wants to go on a trip or attend a program and is not a member, they may join the Center for a 30-day period (City residents: $10, nonresidents: $25). During the period they have all the privileges of a member, and if they decide to join for a year during the first 30 days, the cost of their 30-day trial will be applied toward an annual membership. Please note that cumulative one-month membership fees will not apply.

My favorite day of the year is finally here! The Active Aging Expo is on Wednesday, April 24 at Bohrer Park. Please invite your friends and neighbors to one of the best events of the year! We will have food trucks on site for lunch or bring your own. We have spent hours planning out the demos and activities for your enjoyment. Make sure to check out the many informative vendors who have helped to make this event possible and thank them for their sponsorship.

At the Expo this year, the activity rooms are back! We have speakers, games, crafts, and more. Thank you to the BGC’s Nature Club for hosting the Nature Room and making hundreds of native plant seed balls to give away. The Nature Room will have a speaker on Birding in Maryland, information from the Isaac Walton League and Gaithersburg’s Environmental Services team, and much, much more. A huge thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help make this event a success! I’ll BGC-ing you! -

IPAD ESSENTIALS WITH SENIOR PLANET MONTGOMERY

This five-week course will cover the essentials of how to use an Apple iPad, how to navigate the internet, and how to send and receive emails. At the end of the course, you will have a foundation for using an iPad and the internet to enrich your life. This course meets twice per week. Registration required. 5G TECHNOLOGY WITH SENIOR PLANET MONTGOMERY

5G, the fifth generation of wireless technology, is quickly expanding around the world and growing the global “Internet of Things” of connected devices. This lecture will explain what it is, how it works, and compare it to the previous generation known as 4G. We will also cover some of the most exciting applications of 5G and the impact it will have on our daily lives from self-driving cars to smart cities, virtual reality, holograms, and more!

A 3-mile walk with a Local Guide. There will be multiple stops along the way. See the mouth of the Monocacy River, view the mystery stone beneath the first arch at the aqueduct, the Indian Flats

campground, the old canal basin, the Little Monocacy River, the old stone house ruins, the waste weir, lock 27, and lock house 27. You can see the earthworks that remain from the Monocacy Civil War block house. (There is a short steep hill you will need to climb to see the earthworks.) Please wear sturdy shoes and have a walking stick if necessary. Bring a water bottle, and snacks/ lunch with you. This trip is recommended by the Nature Club.

A fun cardio dance workout that tones the entire body. This class offers easy-to-follow, lowimpact aerobic dance moves for all fitness levels. We make sure your workout is safe, intense and gratifying.

HATHA YOGA WITH JANE STELBOUM

Instructor Jane Stelboum is back with even more techniques to share. This class offers instruction on yoga poses, somatic breathing and movement, healthy/happy back therapy, and meditation. Learn proper and safe alignment. Modifications offered to suit your own body and ability. Dress comfortably. Bring your own mat or use one of ours. Yoga mats are recommended. TRAVEL TRAINING WORKSHOP

Travel Training is a free half-day workshop and field trip designed to help 50+ seniors get confident and comfortable taking public transit, including Metro and Ride On. The class learns how to read the Metro map, understand digital schedule signs, load a fare card, and find a station’s emergency and accessibility features. The workshop includes classroom training; a trip on a Ride On bus; a visit to a Metro station and a round-trip train ride. The three-hour workshop is provided by the Jewish Council for the Aging. ACTIVITY RELEASE FOR MEMBERS

When participating in on-site activities at the Benjamin Gaither Center, I agree to the following:

1. I am aware that while participating in a recreation activity or program offered by the City of Gaithersburg Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture, certain risks and dangers may be present, including, but not limited to, the hazards of traveling public highways, of accidents, of injury, of illness and the forces of nature.

2. I attest and verify that I have full knowledge of the risk involved in physical fitness activities and that I have obtained approval from my physician to participate in the same.

3. In consideration of the right to participate in the above referenced activities or programs and in further consideration of the arrangements made for me by the City of Gaithersburg through its Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture, I do hereby, on behalf of myself, my heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns, assume the above mentioned and all other risks, and do further release and hold harmless and indemnify the City of Gaithersburg and the Mayor and City Council of Gaithersburg and all of the City’s agents, officers and employees from any and all claims for injuries or loss to my person or property or to the person or property of third parties which may arise out of or result from my participation in the above referenced program or activity.

4. I further grant permission for a doctor to administer emergency treatment to me in the event that a medical emergency requires such treatment.

5.I consent to the City’s use of photographs taken or videotapes made of program participants.

6. The City reserves the right to rescind the membership of individuals incapable of complying with the Benjamin Gaither Center policies due to medical conditions beyond the individual’s control as observed by the Center staff.

When participating in any off-site activities, I also agree:

1. To obey the rules and regulations for each activity, follow all directives and adhere to the agenda as outlined by the staff.

2. That if I do not clearly understand how an activity is performed or details of a trip, I will ask a staff member prior to the beginning of the program to clarify my questions.

3. To inform staff prior to the activity or trip if I have any problems meeting the physical requirements necessary for participation in the activity.

4. I agree to listen carefully to the details and timing of the trip and be fully prepared to meet and board the bus at the proper designated place and time. I understand that, in the City’s sole discretion, I may be responsible for paying any and all reasonable charges the City may incur as a result of my failure to meet and board the bus at the proper designated place and time.

Furthermore, I understand that as a participant of the program I will be expected to depart the Benjamin Gaither Center and return to the said location with the group. Any deviation from the activity itinerary will preclude me from participating in future trips, activities or other off-site adventures.
