Car, Stuff, Life Bronx, New York Columbia Core Studio III The Bronx waterfront of the Harlem River is characterized by car dealerships, auto repair shops, and large storage warehouses. FlexHousing builds on and reinterprets these vital services. The seven- to eleven-story building follows the shore line. 1,000-square-foot residential modules facing the river are organized to allow for effortless subdivision and expansion, accessed from an open gallery facing the streets. Independently accessible 200-square-foot FlexSpaces, scattered throughout the building, can be rented by residents for work, storage, or as guest rooms as need arises. An automated parking and storage facility serves both residents and non-residents. Raised entirely on columns, FlexHousing responds to potential flooding while creating articulated, publicly accessible open space.

Symbiosis Circus Manhattan, New York Columbia Advanced Studio V Symbiosis Circus is planned on the east bank of Hudson River in Manhattan, next to the new Whitney Museum. The design seeks to further animate circus performance and dramatize the fun of interaction, through multiplication of several focal points for the audience, and creation of circulation to be shared between both performers and audience. The ground level will feature the history and equipments of circus performance, and the concourse level will allow audience to interact with performers of “casual acts. The main performance hall provides pathways and ramps so that the spectators are encouraged to move around to engage in the show they are interested in.

Situated in southwestern China, the Dali Museum aims to recreate the urban experience in primitive villages in the region, through the use of elements such as courtyards, pathways, and plazas that adapt themselves to the existing topography. The museum will not only display conventional art objects, but also celebrate other forms of media, taking the visitors through various lighting experience. The site is next to a Tang Dynasty pagoda and a small temple. The museum serves as a platform to enliven the currently abandoned pagoda park.
Bank of After Life Brooklyn, New York Columbia Advanced Studio VI
Bank of Post-Life aims to help the neighborhood explore the concept of death and after-life condition. The clients of the bank sign up for a “checking-out account, and at the moment of death they will receive full service of funeral rites and deposit their bodies as bone ash, or cryopreserved, or have themselves shipped to the cemetery. The affiliated anti-ageing research center offers them the opportunity to stake on future technology to reanimate themselves. It is an ideal space for people from different religious backgrounds to unify their notions of what post-life would be.

The design of Moire Museum and Studio challenges the current technology of façade structure. The skin will be composed of two layers in order to create the Moire illusion. The inner surface sheet metals will have diagonal patterns, while the outer screen will be made of colored glass panels installed on steel slats. The overlapping of two skins will display dynamic lighting conditions in the daytime, and at night, the effect will be coupled with the artificial lighting from apertures of different sizes. The lower floors of the building are dedicated to exhibition spaces, with large void spaces. And the upper floors are used as studio spaces. w16x26

Upper West Side Natatorium Manhattan, New York Columbia Core Studio I This project intends to bring back the ecosystem which used to dominate Manhattan Penisula. Learning from the purification water process of the wetland with the help of various aquatic plants, the natatorium contains a similar system to remove the pollutants from the used water in the swimming pool. The used water in the pool that needs to be changed will be pumped up to elevated ponds or directed to the ground ponds with reeds, water lilies etc. After sometime, the water will be filtered by the plants and sand, and then will be redirected back to the pool. These treatment ponds provide an opportunity for the visitors to learn more about botany and ecology, and more importantly the historic environment of Manhattan. Formally, the building are composed of hexagon cells that resemble some plant cells seen under microscope. The swimming pool is given a central focus, so that everyone can have a visual response with the pool while they tour around the building.

Hoboken City is located on the western bank of the Hudson River, across Manhattan Island. Due to its geographical location and topography, two thirds of the city is in flood zone, making only the eastern part of the city a safe place away from flooding. Besides, historically Hoboken is surrounded by water and only modern transport construction filled in the waterways to the west of the city. A large train station on the south side serves as a hub between New Jersey and Manhattan. The Weehawken Cove is one of the two entry points of surge storm into Hoboken (the other being the train station itself), and it is located at the northern end of Hoboken. This “Sponge” projects aims to prevent surge while creating series of “water cells” that filter run-off water before it is discharged to Hudson River. Besides its wave barrier, water filter and storage function, the “Sponge” is also an attractive public space with water activities.
