GTB AT THE MEETINGS SHOW The Gibraltar Tourist Board exhibited at the Meetings Show, London at the start of the month. The show welcomes exhibitors from around the world including hotels, destinations, destination management companies, conference venues and technology suppliers, allowing them to come face to face with global buyers of event, meetings and incentive locations.
Marketing Director of Sunborn Gibraltar said, “We have joined the Tourist Board at this show in the last few years and are able to equate the relationship building with conversion to business in Gibraltar. There are many shows targeting the meetings industry and the Meetings Show is an important element in that mix, particularly for business traffic starting in the UK.”
This year it was co-located with the Business Travel Show Europe and the TravelTech Show allowing full integration with the industry’s corporate community. Lord Sebastian Coe delivered the joint keynote with TEAMS Europe, a newly launched platform for sport-event organisers seeking destinations and suppliers that want more sport related conferencing and event business.
Minister for Business and Tourism, The Hon. Vijay Daryanani MP added, “Returning to this show Gibraltar continues to build on its relationships with suppliers. There is much scope for development and growth in this sector for our destination."
Tracey Poggio from the Gibraltar Tourist Board, joined by Britta Weiser, Sales and
RECOGNITION FOR ISOLAS Isolas was recognised by voters at the 2022 Hedgeweek Europe Digital Assets Awards as the top law firm to support and guide businesses in the funds domiciliation process. The firm, located in Gibraltar – which has recently been named in a PwC and Elwood report as a jurisdiction of choice for the domiciliation of hedge funds, was up against some of the best international law firms. Commenting on the award win, Jonathan Garcia, Partner at Isolas said, “We are both proud and honoured to receive this award. It is another milestone for our Funds Practice and wider Isolas team as it reflects the dedi-
cation, expertise, and commitment we have for our clients." Peter Isola, Senior Partner at ISOLAS commented, “Gibraltar is a preferred jurisdiction for the domiciliation of digital funds, as its innovative, vibrant and robust financial services system gives businesses the confidence and security they need to invest and grow. This award is a testament to the work and contribution the team has made toward positioning Gibraltar as a forward-thinking jurisdiction for the fund’s sector. As Gibraltar and Isolas both continue to grow their respective international influence, I look forward to welcoming more clients from
across the world to the jurisdiction and our firm.” The Hedgeweek European Digital Assets awards aim to recognise excellence among fund managers and service providers in the digital asset space.
Chamber budget response
MGAA 2022 CONFERENCE
Gibraltar's Chamber of Commerce was combative in its response to the recent Budget. While it expected a rebalancing of finances after the COVID-19 pandemic, the measures announced fell short of what it had expected.
Gibraltar Finance attended and sponsored the annual insurance conference of the Managing General Agents Association (MGAA) in the City of London last month.
A spokesperson said, "The Government has sought to lumber the taxpayer and local business with additional costs with very little attempt to return Government to a balanced budget whilst its recurrent spending continues unabated. The deficit is forecast to be £55.29 million this year and £45.3 million next year. It will borrow to meet this deficit instead of seeking greater efficiencies and reducing spending which would be the more prudent and sensible approach." "If the Government’s finances are in such a dire state then more drastic measures such as means testing and inflationary rent increases for Government housing should have been considered." The Chief Minister has repeatedly taken to social media to defend the Government's Budget this year, and conceded the flat-rate business COVID levy would be rethought. The Chief Minister has repeatedly taken to social media to defend the Government's Budget this year, and conceded the flat-rate business COVID levy would be rethought.
GIBRALTARINSIGHT.COM
Gibraltar Finance was represented by Senior Executive, Michael Ashton, who was joined by a number of insurance professionals from Gibraltar. The conference was very well attended with over 850 delegates and the Gibraltar Finance Stand was busy all day. Albert Isola MP, Minister for Digital and Financial Services stated, “The growth in the UK MGA sector over the last 10 years has been substantial with MGAs securing a growing share of premium and partnering with a larger number of insurers. This trajectory is likely to continue. MGAs have become increasing important to the insurance distribution chain because the sector has shown strong innovation in terms of product development, the adoption of new technologies and the introduction of new business models. The MGA structure continues to be the preferred model for insurtechs. We are looking at a number of ways to enhance Gibraltar’s appeal for new MGAs.” The MGAA was founded in 2011 by a group of individuals who saw the need for an association to represent MGAs; lobbying on their behalf, communicating their considerable benefits and maintaining high standards within the industry. Today the MGAA has evolved into a trade association for MGAs in the UK and Ireland with over 180 MGA members. Collectively these MGAs write in excess of £6.5 billion gross written premium per annum.

Nine artists have been selected to form part of the initiative, exploring Gibraltar under the title a ‘Sense of Place/ A Sacred Place’. The nine are a mixture of established and up and coming artists, providing a varied exhibition which includes paintings, photographs, sculpture, and video installations. The exhibition will run for three weeks putting Gibraltar on the map in the capital. Whilst in London, the Minister will also visit art studios in Greenwich to see first-hand how this idea has been developed in the UK. He will be accompanied by GCS CEO Seamus Byrne. MOTORING INSIGHT
Multivan
SHUTTLE WORDS BY MARTIN WARD 18
JULY 2022
GIBRALTARINSIGHT.COM
MOTORING INSIGHT IN MY HUMBLE OPINION, PEOPLE CAN BUY CARS FOR SOME OF THE ODDEST REASONS. PERHAPS THEY BUY IT BECAUSE IT LOOKS GOOD AND STANDS OUT IN A CROWD, BECAUSE IT’S FAST, OR THEY’VE ALWAYS LIKED THE MANUFACTURER, OR BECAUSE THEY LIKE THE COLOUR OR QUITE SIMPLY, IT FITS WITHIN THEIR BUDGET. But I see so often, probably too often that the vehicle they bought just doesn’t suit their life, or lifestyle, or, more probably, the kids. People buy a “people carrier” because as the name suggests, it carries people, large, and small. But these people carriers usually can’t carry much else, such as prams, luggage, get the dog in the back, picnics, chairs and everything else you need for a day out with the family. I see so often neighbours setting off for the weekend with a drive full of stuff to go in the car, but nowhere to put it, and mum & dad arguing over what goes, and what stays. So what is the best thing a parent can buy, for safety, comfort, practicality and space, well Volkswagen have a lot to offer, as do Ford, Peugeot, Citroen, Toyota and others, but let’s look at what VW currently have in the way a practical solution, and to help stop the driveway disagreements.
I recently drove the much anticipated Multivan, the latest people carrier from Volkswagen and many regard this as the T7 Volkswagen started with the ‘T’ Series back in 1949, and based on the Beetle, with a water-cooled rear engine. You will remember it had a flat front and a split windshield, and today they are making a fortune, because they're very collectible. Through the years VW introduced the T2, T3 and so on, until today we have an updated version of the T6 called the T6.1. It is available as many guises including a standard van, pick-up, crew-van and the ever popular Shuttle with either 8 or 9 seats and short or long wheelbase. Then the Multivan came along and replaced the Caravelle 7-seater bus. Many thought the Shuttle would be discontinued in favour of the Multivan, but VW in their wisdom, correctly decided to carrying on building the Shuttle. The Multivan is just so luxurious with seven individual seats with a 2-2-3 configuration, with the two centre seats able to turn around and slide back and forth. It is jam-packed full of technology and it just oozes opulence and quality. It is available with a choice of petrol, diesel or a plug-in Petrol to help save fuel, and reduce
GIBRALTARINSIGHT.COM
emissions, and VW only offer it with a DSG automatic gearbox. The Multivan is offered with either short, or long body, with the wheelbase remaining the same on both versions. The T6.1 Shuttle is only available with diesel power, but does have the choice of manual or automatic gearboxes. The Shuttle is available with long or short wheelbase and either 8 or 9 seats, the 8-seater has a double front passenger seat, whereas the 8-seat version has two individual ‘Captains’ front seats, the middle row has three individual seat and the third row a 3-seater bench. So which is the best, or the one to choose? This all depends on your personal requirements. The Multivan is so luxurious and everything is high quality, full of tech-
nology and looks brilliant ... but does lack a bit of space, especially in the luggage area, nowhere near as much as the T6.1. The Shuttle is more like a van with windows, and seats, which is exactly what it is. But VW have been very clever in disguising the fact it is a van with windows, by making the interior look and feel very special, comfortable by using quality materials. The Shuttle is much more practical than the Multivan, you can get more people in it, and in the boot you can get dogs, bikes, trikes, proms, go to the tip, and so on. Whereas the Multivan is so good, and so precious you’d be frightened to put anything in it, it is... just too nice. It is great though that Volkswagen actually offer you the choice, with these two very competent people carriers. My choice, if you're asking, would be the T6.1, just better for my lifestyle, four grandkids, dogs, always going to the tip, and the coast with buckets, spades, folding chairs, cool-box, all the usual rigmarole. So for me, the Shuttle suits me best, but I wouldn’t say no to a more expensive Multivan, but would have to restrict what I put in it.

Consumers Guidance regarding Hiring a Builder launched by the OFT. The Office of Fair Trading has issued a consumer guidance note highlighting some of the important considerations one should keep in mind when hiring a builder to carry out small building works or refurbishments. This is part of their 2022 Consumer Awareness Programme aimed at assisting local consumers when dealing with businesses. This guidance document specifically focuses on dealings with builders (local or foreign) in relation to small works or refurbishments which are often negotiated and agreed informally without the formation of properly written contracts. It is often the case that issues arise in works of this nature. The Office of Fair Trading has reportedly received many complaints of unlicenced and unregistered non-Gibraltarian businesses providing a sub-standard level of service (often whilst undercutting local businesses). In such situations there is often very little that can be done to rectify the issue or recover any losses you may have suffered. Read the guidance note to find some tips on how to help prevent any potential issues when hiring a builder for your next home renovation!
Consumer Guidance Hiring a Builder As part of its 2022 Consumer Awareness Programme, the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is issuing guidance with practical information to assist local consumers when contracting with a builder for small building works or refurbishments. These works often run into the many thousands of pounds and can cause severe stress and financial loss for consumers. The small building works and refurbishments sector locally is generally informal and this culture can give rise to issues during or after works are carried out. Without the formation of proper written contracts, it is hard to establish what was agreed with builders and this leads to discrepancies with expectations. The OFT also receives complaints in relation to unlicensed and unregistered non-Gibraltarian workers carrying out sub-standard works locally. They can often undercut prices from well-established and trustworthy businesses, however when things go wrong there is often little that can be done to rectify the issues or recover consumers’ losses.
For any concern relating to contracting builders or dispute in relation to your property, please do contact us on +350 20079000.
Common complaints received by the OFT relating to home improvement contracts, concerning, but not limited to, breach of contracts and bad workmanship have been used to compile this guidance.

• Finding the Right Builder
This guidance will focus on: • Getting Quotes from Builders • Contracts and Payments • Check list before going ahead with the works Finding the Right Builder When looking for a builder, some background research will help you make the right choice. Note that good builders are often in demand and there is a lot of work for them in Gibraltar. It may therefore take some time before they can make themselves available to you. It may nevertheless be worth waiting rather than rushing into a contract with a business who may not have good credentials. You may therefore wish to take the following points into consideration:
22
JULY 2022
GIBRALTARINSIGHT.COM
Summer • Ask friends and family for recommendations. Speak to those who have had similar works done and ask them about any problems they experienced;
wise these can be disputed as not included in the price in the future and may lead to further unexpected expenses. Query any expenses that you do not understand;
• Ask to see the works carried out by a builder for other clients and scrutinise these to see if you would be happy with the same quality workmanship;
• Whatever the size or nature of the job, obtain more than 1 quote or estimate (preferably 3) from different businesses;
• Check the business is well established in Gibraltar. Ideally it should have a physical local address and has been trading in Gibraltar for some time. Be wary if the business just gives you a mobile number; • Check that the business holds an up to date Business Licence that covers the area of work they will be conducting for you. This applies to any foreign businesses that will be carrying out works for you locally. (Ask them for a copy of their Business Licence or conduct a search at the OFT for £5.00). This will go some way to ensure you are contracting with a properly formed and accountable businesses in case things go wrong; • Check the builders have appropriate qualifications or experience for the works to be carried out. They should be able to show you a portfolio of previous works they have conducted to ensure competency with the works they will be undertaking for you; • If the builder will be conducting electrical works for you, check that they have the necessary certification from the Gibraltar Electricity Authority. An unqualified electrician is not only dangerous, but it may require you to engage with a qualified electrician in the future to get the works approved; • Check the business has appropriate insurance for the works to be conducted. If a business is not properly established it may invalidate any insurance, including your own household insurance; • A good builder should be able to give you options, solutions and advice on your proposed works.
Getting Quotes from Builders
As Gibraltar is a small community we often have a level of personal relationship with the businesses we engage with. As a consequence, we may at times compromise the fundamentals of forming a solid contract that offers appropriate protections to both parties. It is therefore important that your contract with the builder is based on an appropriate and accurate quote or estimate irrespective of the level of relationship you have with them. This will help reduce problems in the future. The OFT has dealt with numerous disputes where WhatsApp has been the only means of written communication between the parties. As a result, it is hard to establish what exactly was agreed between them. We therefore recommend that you consider the following: • Ask your chosen builder to give you a written quotation itemising all of the work which they are going to carry out. It is preferable to have a firm price rather than an estimate as it will give you certainty. • Ensure that the full scope of works you require, including cost of materials, scaffolding, disposal of rubble, ‘making good’ etc. (no matter how small), are set out in writing otherGIBRALTARINSIGHT.COM
• An accurate quote or estimate can usually only be provided with a visit to your property, so be wary of any pricing provided without an organised visit first. Use the visit to know more about the people who’ll be spending days, weeks or even months in your property; • Take time to carefully consider your options. A reputable business would never pressurise you into a contract; • Be wary of requests to pay for the works in Euros. You will be susceptible to changes in exchange rate and such requests could indicate that the builder is not adequately established, licensed and/or registered in Gibraltar; • You may need permission from the Department of Town Planning & Building Control for the works you want to carry out. Be clear as to who will deal with any permissions required. If you already have plans or drawings with town planning and/or building control approval, supply these to the builders so they can prepare the quotes accurately. For more information about the Department of Town Planning & Building Control’s requirements visit their website. (https://www.gibraltar.gov. gi/town-planning) • The cheapest estimate/quote may not necessarily be the best. If an estimate/quote from one builder is considerably cheaper than others provided, ask about the disparity in pricing. Think about whether there is a misunderstanding about the nature of the works to be carried out or if the quality of works is being compromised as a result of the low price; • Make sure that estimates/quotes indicate the time for completion of works. This information should also be included in the contract. If completion by a certain date is of the essence, make sure this is included in the contract;
Contracts and Payments
When you appoint the services of a building contractor you are entering into a legally binding contract with them, even when there is no signed written contract. The OFT would nevertheless strongly recommend that any contracts are provided in writing (even if it’s by e-mail) so there is no room for ambiguity and as such mitigate any potential problems. Do however note that you will be legally bound by whatever is stipulated in the contract. The OFT has noted that many communications between businesses and consumers are now conducted by WhatsApp and other social media platforms. It is therefore important that these messages are not deleted inadvertently and that the final agreement / contract is sent by email or other written form. The OFT recommends that the following points are taken into consideration before entering into a contract with a builder: • It is automatically implied in all contracts that the business owes you, the client, a duty of care and that works done will be free from defects or hindrance for a reasonable period of
time. This does not need to be in writing as it is a right afforded to you in law; • Any guarantees offered by the builder should be offered to you in writing as part of the contract; • Make sure the contract clearly sets out who is responsible for the management and c payment of any materials and any subcontractors that may be required; • Agree on the payment arrangements before the works start and make sure these are stipulated in the contract. It is common for a builder to ask you for interim payments as the job progresses. If this is the case, you may want to negotiate and introduce some form of retention of monies to safeguard your position in the event that works are not completed adequately. This could be a certain percentage of interim payments, that is paid upon completion if the works have been effected as per contract. The OFT recommends that you never pay the whole amount up front; • Insist on a receipt for every payment you make and/or avoid paying in cash; • Although it is expected within any contract that the job is to be completed within a reasonable amount of time, it is important that a completion date is agreed and stipulated in the contract. When time is of the essence, consider introducing penalties for every week that the works being carried out are delayed without reasonable cause.
Check list before going ahead with the works • Is the business well established locally and does the business hold an appropriate business licence? • Can they be reached in case of a problem? • Have you checked their competency for the works they are to conduct? • Do they have appropriate insurance? • Do you have a written contract with them that includes a breakdown of works and costs, payment schedule and completion date? • Do you need approval for the works from the Department of Town Planning & Building Control?

Property Insight The reasons we choose particular properties are varied, usually practical and frequently based on an emotional feeling about the property. A privately positioned garden, central location or a garage are all essential requirements for some people. For others, the vibe a potential home emits is incredibly important. A house may be aesthetically appealing but if it does not feel welcoming or you cannot envisage living in that space - no amount of bedrooms or south facing garden will persuade you to live there. Do our preferences and priorities change over time? Almost certainly but at the moment of viewing a possible home, we have to be led by the life we are leading and those we are sharing it with at that particular time. Honesty is also crucial when choosing a home. Your friends maybe avid gardeners but if you have little interest in gardening and no younger children to consider, perhaps it doesn’t need to be a high on your must-have list. A sizeable property with several rooms may seem the height of prosperity but if you are living alone or just two of you, are multiple rooms really necessary? More cleaning and maintenance involved as well as heating them during the colder months. At the moment, that is an increasing cost we can certainly do without. Here are a few areas of consideration when choosing your new home:
routes, which has more than one entry point. Commuting to and from work is a big part of many people's days, so a house with easy access to roads and public transportation will be more desirable than one tucked away and can only be accessed by one route. Shady trees, quality landscaping, and nearby parks or community spaces tend to be desirable. You can also judge the neighbourhood’s popularity based on how long homes in that area stay on the market; if turnover is quick, you're not the only one who thinks this is a desirable place to live.3 A great neighbourhood should also include essential amenities such as grocery stores, shops, and restaurants. Most people like to frequent places that are convenient. Research the local public schools even if you don't have kids or plan to have them. A reputable public school district
Also, you'll want to attract the greatest number of potential buyers. Many buyers target neighborhoods with strong public schools.
Garden or Outside space The majority of us desire a garden or at least an den is preferable but simply having any amount of outside area brings a feeling of wellbeing and calm. We are not all gardeners and for some, maintaining a garden is extremely challenging. However, a small patio with a chair and table can provide hours of outdoor tranquility, not
maybe even a mini gym. Whatever your choice of use, it gives a home a sense of space when other uses and activities can be part of your life. Windows in bathrooms are not a necessity but provide the ventilation and fresh air that even the best extractor fan cannot offer. After a steamy bath or hot shower, throwing open a window immediately freshens up the room whilst preventing condensation.
Public Transport links However beautiful, spacious and inviting your home is, without the ability to travel and visit other locations, an individual may feel isolated. A to a car but there are those who don’t drive and perhaps members of the family who may need to use public transport to attend school or have to travel by bus or train for various reasons. Living in a gorgeous home in a quaint village can be idyllic but being in a geographical position where you cannot get to anywhere else can soon make this particular dream feel a tad tarnished. both inside and outside the property.
Storage The wonders of extra storage cannot be underestimated. Whether you have inbuilt units in your bedrooms or particularly generous cupboard space in the kitchen, having plentiful space is a must-have for many of us. If a property can offer a shed, loft or external storage space, it can considerably increase the desirability of a property. No matter how much decluttering we do, there

Neighbourhood
The neighbourhoods that appeal to you will essentially be a matter of personal choice. However, a truly great neighborhood will have a few critical factors in common: accessibility, appearance, and amenities. Your neighborhood may also dictate the size of the lot on which your house is built. In terms of accessibility, you should look for a neighbourhood near a city's major transit

will always be a necessity for storing everyday items as well as accumulated bits and bobs we cannot bear to get rid of.
Number of Bedrooms
Choosing a new home is an exciting time in our lives but not without it’s challenges. Each of us have our practical, geographical and emotional must-haves when deciding. It is a positive and logistical move to prioritise what is truly important to you and then you will experience

Property Insight Home insurance lets you protect your most valuable asset – your home – and what’s inside. Without it, there’s nothing to shield you and your family from serious financial losses in the event of a fire, flood, theft, or another destructive event. But, to have the peace of mind that comes with knowing all your valued possessions are insured, you need to know what home insurance covers. When you understand the benefits and what to look for, you can ensure you have the right coverage. Read on to learn about the benefits of different types of home insurance and what to look for in your coverage.
• You can qualify for a mortgage – you’ll need adequate building insurance before you can get a loan for a new home or investment property.
What to Look for When Choosing Coverage
• You don’t have to worry about accidents – if your policy includes accidental damage, then spills, breaks, and other reasonable accidents are covered, whether caused by you or a tenant.
A standard building insurance policy will cover the structure, as well as fittings and fixtures that are attached to the structure like showerheads, bathtubs, and lighting fixtures.
• If a disaster makes your home unlivable, you’ll have somewhere to stay – with alternative accommodation cover, you’ll have a place to stay until your home is repaired or rebuilt. This feature is usually included in building insurance, but not every policy includes it as standard.
Every policy is different, so it’s important to make sure yours includes coverage for the things you want to protect.
But there are other types of cover that may or may not be included. Look for these features in your coverage. If they're not included but you need them, ask your home insurance company about adding them to your policy. • Cover for physical improvements
What Home Insurance Covers and What to Look for in Your Policy What Does Home Insurance Cover? There are typically two main sections on a home insurance policy – buildings cover and home contents cover. Building insurance protects the structure of your property, including the floors, walls, and roof, while contents insurance covers your belongings that aren’t attached to the building, such as furniture, clothing, and art. When buying home insurance, you can choose a building insurance policy, a content insurance policy, or a packaged policy that includes both.
• Your items are safe even when travelling – home contents insurance will protect your belongings in the house if you’re away for less than 30 days. You can also opt for 'all risks' cover, which protects personal possessions you’d typically carry on your person – like your iPad, watch, glasses, or handbag. What Type of Home Insurance Do I Need? Different people will need different types of home insurance – to help you decide what’s best for you, here are examples of who might need a certain type of coverage.
You don’t legally have to purchase home insurance, but good coverage comes with benefits you probably don't want to go without.
• A landlord might get a policy with building insurance to cover the structure only. If they have furniture and other items in the property, they might opt for a policy with building and home contents insurance.
Critically, you don’t have to worry about what you would do if something terrible happened. If a fire burns down your house or a burglar steals your valuable possessions, your home insurance will cover some of the costs of rebuilding or recouping your lost items.
• A homeowner with a mortgage may have to purchase building insurance to satisfy their lender’s home insurance requirement. The homeowner will also want contents insurance for their clothing, jewellery, and other belongings in the house.
Here's a more detailed look at the benefits of home insurance:
• A renter doesn’t need building insurance – that’s the landlord’s responsibility. But they might decide to get home contents insurance to protect their belongings. The average home has contents worth over £35,000, so, even as a tenant, it’s a good idea to have coverage in case of a fire, flood, or theft.
The Benefits of Home Insurance
• You get financial protection for covered events – these usually include storms and flooding, fires, smoke, lightning, theft, falling trees and branches, frost damage to internal pipes, and water or oil leaking from pipes or HVAC systems.
26
JULY 2022
• Cover for loss of rent • Cover for the structures outside of the home like a shed or pool Home contents insurance covers personal belongings in your home, but you should find out if there is a limit on individual items to see if you need to purchase extra protection for your high-value possessions. For example, if there’s a £1,000 limit, your £10,000 painting isn’t covered. How to Get the Best Home Insurance for You Home insurance is an important investment because it can turn some of life’s most challenging events into manageable experiences. But the reality is that everyone has unique needs when it comes to protecting their home and belongings. To ensure you’re getting the best policy for you, know what coverage you need and choose a policy that has the features you want. At Masbro Insurance, we can tailor your coverage to your individual requirements. Learn more about our home insurance and request a quote today.

WELCOME TO
THE JUNGALOW House plants are must-haves for the new generation of proud plant parents - fact! It’s a game of wordplay – jungle meets bungalow – ta-dah! You don’t have to actually live in a bungalow to enjoy the benefits of this virtuous style – it works in ‘cozy’ apartments and palatial spaces alike! (Ironically) a popular style in ‘concrete jungles’ where it’s all about bringing some natural goodness in, create an ‘indoor jungle’ with an abundance – as in, you literally can’t have too many, of easy house plants in different sizes, shapes, and textures. And just so you know, it’s absolutely okay to talk to your plants, and even give them names – we’re all guilty as charged! But don’t stop there! Jungalow style has a bohemian spirit, so wanderlust away with travel-inspired brights and patterns woven through natural textures, wood grains, and baskets. Pop your leafy lovelies onto a colorful array of DIY plant stands for a carnival riot of personality in any space. So if you’ve been waiting for a sign to turn your home into a magic treehouse, this might just be it. Keep reading for all the details on the jungalow trend, and how you can re-create the look in your home.
‘Jungalow’ style defined One of the reasons we love jungalow style is how exotic it seems, with designs that overflow in lush greenery and colorful bohemian textures. So it might come as a surprise that the trend was actually started in the U.S. by Los Angeles–based designer Justina Blakeney.
Use plants liberally We don’t need to be experts in interior design to know that the Jungalow trend isn’t complete without plants – and lots of them, at that. But before you dash out to your neighbourhood nursery and bring home a haul of 20 plants only to have 3/4 of them die on you in the first three weeks, you’ll want to shop smart. The key to the jungalow aesthetic is to create an urban sanctuary – meaning you’ll want to have a variety of big leafy plants such as the Monstera Deliciousa or the Fiddle Leaf Figs to give you that lush rainforest feel. But to nail the aesthetic game, you’ll want to layer and stagger your indoor plants to give you a more natural feel of being surrounded by flora. Parents of furbabies and little ones with itchy hands can opt for hanging plants such as English Ivy, Boston Fern, or Spider Plants. But besides giving you a cosy interior, plants such as Fuchsias or Gardenias can fit just nicely on the balcony and provide you with added privacy from outside views. Aside from their bountiful air purifying properties, you don’t necessarily need to build your green oasis with just real plants. Consider placing a few faux plants in the mix around your home to create a more cohesive look. Not to mention, you can add an element by dressing up your plants with colourful ceramic pots or rattan baskets.
Use rattan and woven furniture for the relaxed look
How to make your home a jungalow dream
No longer are rattan, woven, and bamboo furniture confined to outdoor porches and gardens as these nifty pieces have hit the trend and are popping inside homes too. While the jungalow aesthetic is packed with eclectic elements, the beauty of rattan furniture is their warm and earthy tones which add a touch of calmness and cosiness to your home.
Before you rush out to buy every last plant from your local nursery, hear this: Jungalow isn’t just about the greenery; it’s also about the new bohemian aesthetic.
Those with tropical envy don’t have to limit themselves to Bali-esque chairs. You can instead pick up other rattan furnishings such as coffee tables and sideboard cabinets.
Ever since Blakeney first started her Jungalow blog over 10 years ago, there has been a steady stream of design accounts popping up on social media with their take on this whimsical trend.
Get the Look! In Gibraltar we're unquely placed to latch on to some of the elements of this white hot trend. Our proximity to Morroco and Spain gies us access to stunning pots, rugs, and fabrics that will have the Instagram trendsetters green with envy.
But if you want to start small then kick it off with mirrors and woven baskets to store your knick-knacks. The natural tones of rattan furnishings alone can do a number in making your home look flat so it’s important to pair it with colourful textiles and eclectic patterns to create a cohesive look.
Add interest with colourful statement rugs and cushions More is more when it comes to nailing the Jungalow trend and when it comes to soft furnishings, you’ll want to opt for vibrant hues and intricate patterns. Persian-style rugs, embroidered tapestries, kilim cushion covers, and even colourful pieces of furniture are surefire ways to nail the Bohemian side of the Jungalow aesthetic. A general rule of thumb is to compliment your earthy tones with pops of colour. Think of a bright yellow couch paired with a terracotta rug.
Opt for bold botanical wallpaper Whether it’s an L-shaped dining nook or an entire section of your living room wall, an accent wall can work wonders to create a certain vibe and instantly transform your space. You can even get creative with wallpaper and choose to incorporate them in smaller spaces such as powder rooms or corridors to give your home some vibrancy.
Use intricate tiles for extra colour and texture Jungalow isn’t just about styling. You don’t need to cover every inch of your home in botanical prints to achieve the look. Sometimes, it’s as easy as incorporating dimension, colour and texture in your tile choice. If you’re at the starting line of your home reno journey, consider using browns, oranges, yellows and greens in your choice of tiles to draw that earthy feel in. You don’t have to stop at solid colours either. Pair your greens with patterned tiles for a splash of character.
Use trinkets, antiques and global accents for decor On the surface, the Jungalow aesthetic can come across as chaotic but part of its appeal is the creative freedom to mix and match things that you love to achieve a quirky aesthetic that reflects your personality. Start by styling – a.k.a. personalising – your home with knick-knacks, posters, and tapestries that you’ve sourced from your overseas holidays or cross boarder jaunts. And if you’re running out of ideas, you can turn to wicker items such as trinkets and paintings as well as statement ornate mirrors and throws to jazz up your space.
The Jungalow aesthetic is worth experimenting with whether you’re hoping to revamp your existing home or settle on a theme for your new abode. With these six tips in mind, you can easily transform your house into a bohemian oasis that will have others filled with house envy! GIBRALTARINSIGHT.COM

FAREWELL TO CBFG
Taff, who joins from Navy Command Headquarters, has taken over from WO1 Mac McKenna, following a handover outside the HQBF Gibraltar Tower. As the SWO, Taff will act as the conduit between the non-commissioned ratings and ranks of all three services based in Gibraltar as well as conducting important ceremonial roles as the Parade Commander of the Battle of Trafalgar ceremony; he will attend public and private events alongside CBF. Outgoing SWO, Mac McKenna said, "The past two years serving as the SWO have been demanding but extremely rewarding in many ways. It has been an absolute privilege to be part of and work alongside some fantastic people “Serving as SWO in Gibraltar has been one of my career highlights and I leave with some fond memories of occasions such as the Armed Forces Day in 2021 and most recently, the Royal Visit and Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.” Mac leaves Gibraltar to start a new chapter in his Royal Naval career. He joins the Britannia Royal Naval Collage in July to undertake his officer training as part of the Warrant Officer Commissioning Programme. Speaking of his new role, Taff added, “I am both excited and honoured to be returning to Gibraltar in the position of SWO and look forward to supporting Commander British Force’s Command plan. “I am looking forward to further progressing the work that has been ongoing throughout Mac’s tenure and look forward to meeting people and their families from across the Command”
At the start of the month, Commodore Steve Dainton bid farewell to The Tower and Her Majesty’s Naval Base after two years as Commander British Forces Gibraltar. Commodore Dainton arrived in Gibraltar in 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. He will now head back to the United Kingdom and take up his promotion to Rear Admiral. He left The Tower aboard patrol boat HMS Cutlass with his wife, Caroline, waved off by staff. During his time in Gibraltar, Commodore Dainton was instrumental in the implementation and development of plans in support of the Integrated Review, he has led British Forces Gibraltar during the COVID-19 pandemic, supporting resilience plans to help protect Gibraltar against the virus, as well as being committed to contingency plans surrounding ongoing EU exit negotiations.

Commodore Steve Dainton commented, “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and I am very sad to leave. I was very fortunate when I found out that I was coming to Gibraltar. I have been coming back to Gibraltar since I was 18, so it has become my second home. “I have had the privilege of working with some fantastic people whilst being here.”
Everyone at Insight wishes you all the very best!
Jubilee MEDALS
British Forces Gibraltar personnel were recently awarded their Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal in a recent ceremony held in the Tower Courtyard, in the Naval Base, and on the parade square in Devil’s Tower Camp. To mark The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, a special commemorative medal has awarded to all serving frontline members of the police, fire, emergency services, prison services and the Armed Forces. The Platinum Jubilee Medal is just one part of the year-long Platinum Jubilee celebrations that will take place throughout the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and across the world in 2022, as The Queen becomes the first British Monarch to celebrate this incredible milestone.

A few weeks back I recharged my emotional and musical batteries at the excellent show put on by the GAMPA kids at the John Mac Hall, our youth is always a joy to watch and listen to. They sung and they danced their hearts out to songs from the musical ‘The Greatest Showman’ but the extra treat was that the first half of the show was led by Christian Santos and Andrea Simpson doing what they do best, belting out great tunes from other great musicals of their choice.
Sometimes they sang solo and other times in duets with each other or with GAMPA star pupils Ella Vinet and Sean Jeffries. A substantial chorus line from the school sang behind them when it fitted the songs and a reduced chorus line was there for the more intimate ballads. Even a better treat for me and a significant step up, was that the musical accompaniment throughout the first half, was performed ‘live’ by an ensemble of GAMPA musicians who excelled in their roles and always complemented the singers under the baton of their musical director pianist Mr. Monjes. He led an ensemble which featured two strings, a flute and a sax, drums and bass. They were really good and provided the ‘light and shade’ that great songs need to breathe and weave their magic spell on us.
What an absolute joy to be able to witness and enjoy such a rich programme of stage music which barely a few years ago would have been unthinkable, not to say unachievable. I was so proud to have been there to soak up the magic that was conjured up in a music spectacle that raises the bar even higher for GAMPA academy. I do not exaggerate when I say that it was indeed ‘the greatest show’ ever put on by the academy and a fitting finale to this year’s summer term where they
have finally been released from the woes of the Covid restrictions after two years. The sell out audience, upstairs swelled sometimes by the non-performing juniors and infants, were loud and generous in their applause and there is no greater reward for a performing artist than their home public’s acclaim. Christian Santos, never usually lost for words was right to have felt rightly proud of what our children and youth are constantly achieving in music and performing. However we must not overlook the fact that he is an artist himself and he delivered great vocals in spades last Friday, flanked by the talented and charming Andrea Simpson. In part two the seniors were in their element singing and performing with great conviction. The programme also saw the upcoming acting and performing ‘little
ones’ go through their paces and shine in the spotlight, later giving way to the seniors in their resplendent ‘Show’ costumes which added flair to the busy dance routines and with the clever triangular formation choreography that we have now come to expect from this group, they always kept up the momentum and helped to highlight the soloists’ efforts at stage front. Let’s not take this significant achieve-
ment lightly or God forbid, for granted. We can become blasé about too much of a good thing, but in one of his always warm and admiring comments about Andrea Simpson, Christian said it ‘was easy to take her for granted because she made it look easy’. That’s where the nub is, these GAMPA kids are such seasoned performers that we have come to expect very high standards. It’s not easy to impress an audience- you have to be good and deliver on all fronts. These are very high standard young performers and long may the GAMPA academy rule the boards of our theatres. Our music culture is dripping wet with young talent and it enriches our community. Well done all for putting your hearts and soul into this great evening of entertainment. I salute you.

BUSY TIMES FOR ALL GIBRALTAR SQUADS JUNE 2022 SAW ONE OF THE BUSIEST EVER INTERNATIONAL WINDOWS FOR GIBRALTAR’S MEN’S NATIONAL TEAMS WITH SEVEN INTERNATIONAL FIXTURES JAMMED INTO A 14 DAY PERIOD, FOUR OF WHICH WERE AWAY FROM HOME. The Men’s National Team were scheduled to play in four UEFA Nations League matches, in what was to be their debut in League C of the competition, having won promotion from League D in the 2020 edition of the Nations League. Four internationals in one window was also somewhat of a unique situation, owing to the changes made due to the winter world cup, as outside of major tournament finals, no European international window will usually feature four competitive matches. Georgia Away, North Macedonia at home, Bulgaria at home and then North Macedonia away was to be Gibraltar’s gruelling schedule of League C Group 4 fixtures for June, and despite two difficult away days in Tbilisi and Skopje, losing 4-0 respectively in both matches, the home games against North Macedonia and Bulgaria were huge positives. Unlucky not to win both, a 2-0 defeat to North Macedonia somewhat flattered the Macedonians with Gibraltar squandering the better chances. The second home game of the week was even better for Gibraltar as they dominated against the pre-tournament group favourites – Bulgaria. Despite conceding a soft goal just on half time a second half Liam walker penalty secured a 1-1 draw with Gibraltar once again having plenty of chances to go on and win the game. Gibraltar’s Under 21s also has two of their three matches this June away from home and difficult away trips in the Netherlands and Wales saw them lose 6-0 and 2-0 respectively. However, like the Gibraltar’s National Team, 2 three days before them, they were to have their moment against Bulgaria U21s when they held them to a 1-1 draw at the Victoria Stadium. Ironically and identical-

ly, it was a second half penalty that sealed the draw which could have been so different if they had taken their chances. Nevertheless, the result was a tremendous one. For many nations, for many national football teams of any age group, for many football associations and federations, two home 1-1 draws in the space of three days may not be much to shout about. For Gibraltar and Gibraltarians all around the world it is the complete opposite. Two 1-1 draws, one in a senior men’s international and another at men’s U21 level are two results to treasure. Bulgaria are the nation that produced Hristo Stoichkov, and his band of brothers who reached the semi finals of USA ’94. In more recent times they have been spearheaded by Dimitar Berbatov alongside Stilyan and Martin Petrov. Bulgaira are the team that were in League B of the previous edition of the UEFA Nations League. Gibraltar is a team, that in their eyes, should not be a problem for them.
Gibraltar’s goal scorers, two offensive midfielders at different ends of their careers, Liam Walker and Dylan Peacock both clinically slotted away their spot kicks under the iconic gaze of the Rock of Gibraltar, however in these two ‘David versus Goliath’ fixtures the performances were team efforts with not one player in the Gibraltar shirt shirking responsibility, hard work, grit, determination or an ounce of passion in playing for their shirt, their fans and their country. Both results masterminded by Head Coaches Julio Ribas and David Ochello and their sensational backroom team and support staff. Two draws. Yes, two draws, but for Gibraltar they mean more. In terms of the size of our nation, our population, our footballing infrastructure, the number of pitches available to us, these results simply should not happen. But football simply isn’t played on paper. It is played with heart, passion, desire and a willingness to pull on your nations jersey and simply give every ounce of energy, putting your body on the line, being first into the tackle, first to make that all important block. It’s blood, sweat and tears, and when this is combined with Gibraltarian grit and sheer determination to punch above our weight, anything is possible!

bEING gRACEFUL iN aGELESSNESS I have always asserted that I would never age gracefully but now I realise that what I really meant was that I would be graceful in agelessness.
I believe in agelessness and what could possibly be more graceful than that. What do I mean by this? Well, as I mention regularly, given that we are spirit living in the body it follows that while the body chalks up the linear years, the spirit goes on forever. The spirit does not die. The body dies and the spirit moves on. So, the spirit is ageless. Forever young. Linear years are a manufactured concept ……. Apparently, we can expect to live three score years and ten (70 linear years) and be grateful for what we are granted beyond that. My 97-year-old aunt is testament to the fact that this idea is open to interpretation. She is fully functioning mind and body and still teaching yoga! She doesn’t miss a trick and has a happy healthy and loving inner child who makes sure that she stays that way! There are others who heave a sigh of relief and take this message at face value and seize upon it as a grand excuse to give up on life and age anything but gracefully! Too many people become old before their time and wear it as a badge of importance! Of course, older people deserve respect. But not just for being alive or even half alive. That respect needs to be earned and it starts with self-love and self-respect, and the diligent caretaking of the body which has undertaken the onerous task of being a physical home for the soul. Too many of us realise this too late! Though it is never too late to start if the heart is centred, willing to forgive and willing to love. I have undertaken and taught Inner Child work for many years. It has been found to be a hugely loving and healing path for healing the traumas and wounds of our childhoods. We can learn to re parent ourselves and to understand the difference between
living from our worth rather than from our wounds. More recently, I have started to work directly with the soul which may actually be the same process as working with the Inner Child. Certainly, they hang out together, loving and caring for each other and helping the body/mind to understand the true processes involved in navigating this increasingly scary world that we are living in. And to lighten up! In order for the current global transition to evolve from a depersonalised ego centred energy to a gentler heart centred one it is essential that we learn to follow the wisdom of our souls. This is a dimensional transition, commonly referred to as moving from the 3rd Dimension to the 5th. Or, from ego to heart. This must happen first on an individual level in order to expand out from the heart and resonate with the hearts of others. Firstly, there is a season of aloneness ….. for preparation and for learning. And this season can take years or even decades of being apart from the crowd, being the odd one out, not fitting in and being aware of things going on around us that others are simply not picking up on. And so very often they find us comical, dippy or downright stupid. Never before in history has this been so clearly the case. But the tide is now turning and, as more and more people become conscious of the agelessness of their soul, then life becomes lighter and fear diminishes. Fear of the future, fear of aging and fear of what other people think. How often do we hear people express that they cannot believe what ‘age’ they are? Or, that the years have flown by so quickly and yet they still feel the same inside? I think we have all heard the saying, ‘the spirit is willing but the body is weak’? Of course, the spirit is willing but if the body hasn’t been loved and looked after it cannot possibly be anything other than weak.
Deepak Chopra articulates the mind body spirit link beautifully. He explains that people think they are bodies that have learned how to think when, in fact, they are spirit that has created the physical machine. The mind (thoughts) produces the molecules (the body) and spirit resides in the spaces in between the thoughts. This is why meditation is such an important practice and has incredible results when it comes to physical and mental youthfulness. Those spaces are where decisions are made and futures are decided. It is not genetic or ‘in the lap of the gods’, it is in our minds and is what we choose to create. So, eat well and speak to yourself with loving kindness. Tell your body how wonderful and unique it is and give it the confidence and the honour of being the beautiful and perfect temple it was designed to be. We must take good care of ourselves Physically, Intellectually, Emotionally and Spiritually. If we do not do this then we will age way ahead of our time. Your spirit cannot decay or die but it can be held back by an uncared-for body temple. You are ageless. You are spirit and you have been living in your body for a certain length of time but you are not that body. So, defy your linear age. You are a timeless, ageless being – be graceful in your agelessness. Kate Mchardy MA(Hons) PGCE MSPH Spiritual coach, teacher and healer. katemch@ gmail.com / Tel: +44 7712889534. 1/16 - A pint is not a pint Visiting Brits might finally feel confident about ordering a flat white, but all nonchalance is annihilated when it comes to buying a beer. Would that be a schooner, middy, pony or pot? And even if they find themselves in a part of the country that does sells pints – THEY ARE NOT THE SAME SIZE in different states. What the?

3/16 …and nobody knows how to dress when it is cold If there’s one thing Brits are good at, it’s dressing for inclement weather. After all, they have a coat wardrobe for every variant of temperature, from light rain jackets for summer, through to puffy jackets for winter. UK visitors are, therefore, generally confused to see Aussies in beanies, scarves, puffy jackets and… shorts and flip-flips. How can your head be cold, but your feet hot? This makes zero sense.
4/16 - But there’s no heating… But once they discover it does get cold in Australia – heck, people even ski - the next question from anyone from the UK is why, why, why, don’t houses have central-heating? TO FESTIVALS
TRAVELLING
ATTENDING FESTIVALS FOR MANY PEOPLE IS PURE UNADULTERATED JOY. WHETHER IT IS AMAZING LIVE THEATRE IN EDINBURGH, ENJOYING THE DELICIOUS BEER AT OKTOBERFEST IN GERMANY OR OBSERVING THE DELICATE BEAUTY OF CHERRY BLOSSOM IN JAPAN. Every festival provides us with sights, sounds and smells to excite us, create thought provoking feelings or simply enchant us with inspirational visions. Festivals have both social and economic angles. In the chaotic and stressful planet we inhabit, happiness is overshadowed by negativity and insecurity and so the need for something that could bring positivity has been felt time and again. Thus, festivals that give us the opportunity to forget all our worries and celebrate the positive side of life, even if it is for a few days, came into existence. Festivals act like stress relievers and help us balance our emotions. More positivity naturally lowers negativity. It also provides an opportunity to reduce stress and brings estranged friends and relatives together in a positive and life affirming way.
EVENTS Think of a festival like a giant themed party. It's a place where thousands of like-minded travellers get together to celebrate the thing they love most, from electronic music to classical theatre, contemporary art and even films. The exhilarating, shared experience of a festival helps travellers connect to new people, new sights, and revelatory sounds, familiarising them with the place. Festivals are one of the biggest reasons for visiting a destination during peak season. It’s inspirational when a town or city is in full bloom with a heady mix of locals, visiting performers, high-brow art and excitable tourists.
Festivals are a one-stop destination for full immersion in a particular genre or field of interest. For days at a time, travellers can immerse themselves in a variety of activities, performances, demonstrations, and exhibits related to a topic they love. A gathering of likeminded souls is a particularly unique emotional experience. Naturally, celebration is the ultimate goal but international festivals serve as educational functions as well. These events are curated by experts and carefully coordinated months in advance. An international festival can be a springboard for learning about regional cuisine (oysters in Ireland or white truffles in Italy) or discovering local music and theatre. Whilst visiting a festival location, there is an opportunity to also visit prominent architectural landmarks or public parks and gardens. Whatever your particular interest is, undoubtedly it will be a memorable experience so plan your trip around a visit to a summer festival. Everyone wants to have a fun, unique experience while they are on holiday. One of the easiest ways to ensure that you will have an interesting trip is to plan around a local festival. Festivals offer a huge insight into the area's culture and are a great way to try something unique and memorable. There are many exciting reasons why you should plan a trip around a festival. If you are planning a holiday, consider these insights.
FESTIVALS ARE FUN One of the biggest reasons why people travel is to have fun and to enjoy experiences. A local festival can be the perfect reason to travel with friends. It does not matter if you are driving, using public transport or flying overseas - you know you will discover something exciting to do at a festival.
VISIT A NEW LOCATION If you are planning around an event, you may be surprised by where your journey takes you. Many festivals are in cities you might not usually consider traveling to. You will learn and appreciate a lot about the local culture and leave with a new understanding of the area. Festivals provide significant insight into the people, history and dynamics of a city. There are numerous festival locations closer to home that can be easily overlooked. They equally can offer an amazing, thought provoking experience.
EXPERIENCE SOMETHING UNIQUE It is no secret that every city has something different to offer travellers. A trip to the La Tomatina festival in Spain is going to be nothing like the Burning Man gathering in the USA. It is not essential to travel far to get a unique experience. Before selecting a festival, think about the things you like to do for entertainment. Then, look for festivals that offer these elements with a unique angle. This will allow you to create a truly unforgettable experience that you will really appreciate.

London, New York and Sydney host major festivals, it is surprising what smaller cities have to offer in terms of an incredible experience. Local festivals may be smaller in size, but they can provide some amazing, unforgettable moments. Anna Wilton, 38 from London has attended festivals since her teens. ‘I love going to festivals. The feel good energy they produce is unbelievable. Music festivals in particular generate a vibe that runs through everyone there but other gatherings can produce a calmer, collective environment. There is a particular feeling you can
only experience when a group of people who all love the same thing, are enjoying it together. That only makes a festival a unique experience. The memories I have made often keep me going when I feel a bit jaded so from a personal perspective, I have found visiting festivals a really positive part of my life.’ If you are starting to plan your next getaway, consider looking for a festival that appeals to you. WHAT INSPIRES US TO
TRAVEL TRAVEL TAKES US OUT OF OUR COMFORT ZONE AND INSPIRES US TO SEE, TASTE AND TRY NEW THINGS. IT CONSTANTLY CHALLENGES US, NOT ONLY TO ADAPT TO AND EXPLORE NEW SURROUNDINGS BUT ALSO TO ENGAGE WITH DIFFERENT PEOPLE, TO EMBRACE ADVENTURES AS THEY COME AND TO SHARE NEW AND MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCES WITH FRIENDS AND LOVED ONES.
Challenging yourself
You might feel like you are stuck in a rut in your daily life or perhaps craving new experiences and challenges. Travel is the ideal place to test yourself. It pushes people to their limits and pushes them outside their comfort zone. A person discovers how resourceful they are when exposed to new places, people and experiences. Perhaps it is navigating your way around a busy city or ordering food when you don’t speak the language. You will feel pride when you finish your trip successfully. Overcoming challenges will bring you joy and energy for future tests. You will understand how capable you are and build your confidence.
Learning
Learning is a significant reason why people love to travel. We want to experience something unfamiliar and leave with new skills or knowledge. Travel is a masterclass in discovering how the rest of the world actually lives, in all senses.
44
Every destination has something unique to teach visitors. Immersing ourselves in a completely different world is a potent learning experience. Individuals often travel to learn something specific: a new language, a different cuisine, aspects of a different culture or a deeper appreciation of spirituality. By actually experiencing this learning in real life, not reading it in a textbook, it will remains with you for a long time.
Expanding your perspective
Meeting people from other places will show you that your world view is not the same as everyone else’s. You cannot imagine how different life is in another place until you personally experience it. A different environment will help you discover and consider fresh ideas you have not previously thought of. We can return home with different notions and possibilities. By being exposed to new places, people and cultures, you will develop a wider world view. This will create a well rounded, global citizen. This is a wonderful reward and pivotal reason why people love to travel.

Building and strengthening relationships
The shared experience of travel brings people together. A family getaway, a romantic trip or long weekend with friends can strengthen important bonds. With the demands of today’s lifestyle, and relatives spread across the country and world, families have precious little time together. Whatever your travel experience looks like, it is an opportunity to connect with each other. It may even smooth over any family niggles and create happier relationships. Couples, too, need to bond with each other away from home and work demands. Sharing travel experiences can ignite fresh sparks that last long after the couple returns home. Travel is a special way to deepen friendships as well. Whether it is a ski break with friends or a week-long beach getaway with your family, travel will remind you why you became friends in the first place and how rewarding it is to spend focused time together. Travel is also a great opportunity to make new friends – either fellow travellers or locals.
Escaping
Whether it is a demanding job, a bad breakup or a bereavement, travel can be a huge relief from the stress and unhappiness that come along with those situations. People desire from their travels what they don’t have back home: fabulous weather, breathtaking scenery and the freedom to do exactly what they want. Experiences they cannot normally have, at a slower, relaxing pace. Stepping away from the workplace is good for you both mentally and physically. When you return, you will have had the mental space to look at issues with a fresh perspective. Travel has the power to let you not only escape but also heal. A new location with fun distractions can work wonders. You will return home more at peace and restored, prepared for future challenging situations.

Relaxing and rejuvenating
Even if not escaping problems, everyone can benefit from a break from our usual regime of all work and no play. You may not realise how much you need to disconnect from the ever-present pressure of being available by phone, email or social media. Travel is exactly what you need to rejuvenate yourself. A relaxing natural setting and good weather are common ingredients for the R&R-focused trip. But everyone’s idea of the perfect rejuvenating vacation is different. One person might want to trek through a rainforest. Another may want to lie poolside at a Mexican resort. What should you do when you’re there? Nothing, really. Relax and be present in the moment. Let sensations like the lapping water and the warmth of the sun, along with the sound of waves, recharge your batteries.
Celebrating
There is always a wonderful reason to take a trip. A special occasion is made even more special by celebrating away from the hectic pace of life at home. It’s also a good way to gather family and friends from distant corners to mark the milestone. Celebration holidays provide a lasting benefit as well - shared memories for a lifetime.
Value your life
When you feel somewhat stuck in your daily life, it is easy to lose sight of what you have and forget or not recognise what is special about our own homes. Travelling, exploring and creating experiences in other locations can highlight what is positive and meaningful about our own homes. Absorbing other cultures can create a deeper appreciation for our everyday lives.

Visit the Anne Frank house This is definitely a moving experience and it actually feels quite surreal to be standing in the house and rooms where Anne Frank, her family and other jewish people were living in hiding for two years. Be sure to buy your tickets online, as they don’t sell tickets at the door and allow people in based on half hour time slots. This did however mean that we weren’t queuing for long to get in.
‘Delftware’ handcrafts. Your guide will also take you to the lively market square of Delft, where you can stroll through the cobblestoned streets.
Amsterdam is the perfect choice for a weekend break, or for a hen or stag-do from the looks of things when we arrived at Schiphol airport! A lot of tourists travel to the dutch city for their ‘coffee shops’ and relaxed laws. However if that is not your scene, there are still plenty of things to experience in the dutch capital. Here are my 10 recommendations.
Visit the Van Gogh Museum This museum houses over 1000 paintings, drawings and letters by Van Gogh. Including his famous ‘sunflowers’ and ‘self portrait’ paintings. A friend recommended that in order to feel fully immersed in this experience, visit the Bulldog ‘coffee’ shop first and watch the colours and textures come to life!
Experience the MOCO museum This museum features a range of modern and contemporary art including the likes of Banksy and Andy Warhol. There was also a range of immersive rooms that make for a great backdrop for your photos for the gram. If you’re into the recent NFT hype, they also had a whole gallery dedicated to this.
Fill your belly at Foodhallen
If you’re travelling on your own or with a small group, a good way to meet people from different countries is by joining a city pub crawl. ‘Ultimate Party Amsterdam’ host a pub crawl every Friday and Saturday, and for 25 euros you will get shots in a number of bars, and entry into Amsterdam’s biggest club ‘AIR’. When you arrive at the meeting point they will give you a Whatsapp message with the pub crawl route and timings, so if you want to stay somewhere a bit longer you’ll know where to end up!
Get a rush of adrenaline at the A’DAM Lookout Swing
We liked this place so much that we came back twice. Foodhallen is an indoor food court with over 20 different food stalls that offer everything from japanese to mexican cuisine. They also of course have a dutch stand where you can try a variety of ‘bitterballen’. Which are a cross between meatballs and croquettes.
If you’re a bit of a thrill seeker, head to the ‘Over the Edge’ swing in Amsterdam where you will dangle 100 metres over the ground. This is actually the highest swing in Europe so that’s something you’ll be able to tick off your bucket list. In order to get here you’ll have to catch a free F3 ferry (to Buiksloterweg) and then take a short walk along the IJ waters.
Scream at the Amsterdam dungeons
Visit the Tulip Fields
The weather in Amsterdam can be quite unpredictable, so if you happen to be there on a rainy day I’d suggest visiting the Amsterdam dungeons. If you’re travelling with a group, this most likely will be a good laugh because the chances of a member of your group getting picked in one of the rooms is high!
You can do this the sophisticated way by purchasing a tour in a cheese shop, where your guide will let you sample several cheeses paired with mustard, dips and red wine. Or you can visit all the cheese shops in the centre of town and try all of the cheese samples. Just make sure you actually buy something so the shop attendants don’t look at you strangely when you leave! My favourites were the smoked gouda, the pesto gouda and the truffle gouda.
Go on a Red Light Pub Crawl
Cruise through the canals with with wine and cheese I’ve done river cruises in cities before that have been quite underwhelming, but this one I’d choose to do again. There are different types of packages you can get for these, and you can choose either a private tour or a group one. The canal cruise takes you through some parts of Amsterdam that you can only access via the canals, and it was very picturesque. Make sure to make the most of the ‘bottomless’ wine on the boat too.
Go on a cheese crawl
The best time to visit Amsterdam is between April - May, for light jacket weather and tulip season. We visited in June and the weather contrasted from 30 degree sun on the Friday to light rain and jeans weather on the Sunday! To get around Amsterdam you can rent a bicycle, purchase a 24/48/72 hour tram ticket, or walking is doable too. If you do rent a bicycle, don’t expect this to be a leisurely ride as there are more bikes than cars in the city!
If you’d like to see the iconic endless rows of colourful tulips, then plan a day to Keukenhof which is known as the ‘garden of Europe’. You can find a variety of tours available on GetYourGuide. You will get photo opportunities, as well as the chance to visit a typical Dutch town which is famous for its iconic

FEATURE TIP 1 - If you are travelling to Berlin before the end of 31st August 2022, it’s a good idea to buy Germany’s new budget €9 travel pass available for purchase on the Deutsche Bahn (DB) website or from vending machines. The tickets are valid between 1st June and 31st August 2022 and each ticket entitles you to use the public transport network for one calendar month and even if you are only in Berlin for a few days, this will prove to be excellent value for money.
stag was built between 1884 and 1894 and was the seat of parliament in the German Empire and the Weimar Republic. During the Second World War the building was heavily damaged. After the reunification of Germany in 1990, a drastic reconstruction of the building took place between 1994 and 1999 and it was redesigned as a modern Parliament building which is the home of the German Bundestag.
On our first morning we hopped on the S7 train at Berlin Central Station (Berlin Hbf Hauptbahnhof) to go to beautiful Potsdam, about a half hour ride away. Potsdam plays a crucial part in the history of Germany as it was the place where Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and U.S. President Harry Truman met in1945, to negotiate terms for the end of World War II. Once the residence of Prussian royalty and a military stronghold under King Frederick the Great, the city is home to 14 castles and three historic parks and the entire area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once we arrived at the station we took a bus to Schloss Sanssouci (Sanssouci Palace). Completed in 1747, this was King Frederick’s summer palace, the place that he went to relax, ‘Sans Soucci’ meaning ‘no worries’ in French.
TIP 4 - Admission is free, but don’t take a chance and just turn up because pre-booked tickets are a must and to make sure you get in on the day you want to go it is best to book online at least one week before. Security is very strict and visitors are only allowed in small groups. Something to be aware of is that the Dome is not air-conditioned and it can get very hot and stuffy as you wander up and down the spiral walkways.
TIP 2 - Be aware that entry to the Palace is limited to specific time slots and it is advisable to purchase your ticket online before you head off. The Baroque Palace itself is relatively small but if you don’t manage to get into the building, the impressive terraced formal gardens are worth viewing. What was a surprise though was the incredible Picture Gallery located in Sanssouci Park for which we paid a separate entrance fee on arrival. We stumbled across this by chance and it certainly has the ‘wow’ factor’, with the small building earning its reputation as one of the most majestic 18th century buildings in Europe and housing paintings by some of the great masters, including Peter Paul Rubens, Caravaggio and Anthony van Dyck.
THE BEST OF
Berlin The capital of Germany, Berlin, is an exciting city to explore. This was our first trip and we managed to cram in most of the highlights in three days. There is so much to see and do that it is best to plan your trip first to ensure that you manage to get around all the sights, but it is also worth knowing some of the hints and tips that will make your visit more pleasurable.
Back to Berlin city and apart from the ‘mustdo’ sights such as Checkpoint Charlie (little more than a signpost), the site of the Führerbunker (Hitler’s last bunker) now marked by an information board in a parking lot and the nearby haunting Holocaust Memorial, a place of remembrance featuring 2,711 grey concrete blocks commemorating the murdered Jews of Europe, one of the most informative places we visited was the privately owned Berlin Story Bunker Museum. The 6,500-square-metre WWII bunker near Anhalter Station chillingly details the entire history of the rise and fall of the Third Reich and features a recreation of the room in which Hitler committed suicide on April 30th 1945. TIP 3 - Definitely take the audio guide which is included in the entry fee and allow at least three hours to tour the building - a must for history buffs but prepare for an emotional and harrowing journey and some brutal images. As we walked to the Brandenburg Gate, one of the most important monuments in Germany, there are still places where you can see remnants of the Berlin Wall. We then headed to where the best panoramic views of Berlin can be found from the Norman Foster designed glass Reichstag Dome. The Reich-
If you fancy a bit of art and culture, you have a choice of not just one but five world class museums situated on the UNESCO World Heritage Site Museum Island in the middle of the Spree river: the Altes Museum (Greek, Etruscan, and Roman antiquities); the Neues Museum (home to a 3,300-year-old bust of Egyptian queen Nefertiti); the Alte Nationalgalerie (artwork from the neoclassical through the early modernist periods, including 19th-century French masters, like Monet, Manet and Renoir); the Bode Museum (housing Europe’s greatest collections of sculpture from the Gothic to neoclassical periods) and the popular and largest of them all - the Pergamon Museum (focusing on the ancient world). TIP 5 – Even if you don’t go inside any of the museums, the architecture of each building built under the Prussian rulers is spectacular and worth seeing. If you have time to visit several museums, opt for the Museum Island Pass which gives you entry to a range of different museums across Berlin at an affordable price. There is an abundance of things to do and attractions to see in Berlin, and a city sightseeing River Cruise is a great way to get your bearings of where things are situated and to see some of the city's iconic landmarks from the water.
Food is always an important part of any trip and there are plenty of restaurants offering a taste of German cuisine such as schnitzel and Wiener schnitzel. Weiner is the German word for Vienna and is made with veal, whereas the German schnitzel is usually made with pork. Currywurst, an acquired taste and best eaten with a glass of German beer to help it down, is the most popular street food in Berlin. The dish was invented in 1949 by a fast food stand owner, who added Worcestershire and curry powder, obtained from British Soldiers after WWII, to ketchup. Berlin is a buzzing metropolis and vibrant city that combines its historic heritage with a reputation as a centre for politics, culture, creative arts, media, and science and it is well worth a visit.

TRAVEL COMPANION THE IMPORTANCE WE PLACE ON OUR TRAVEL DESTINATION CANNOT BE UNDERESTIMATED. HOWEVER, WHAT IS EQUALLY CRUCIAL - IF NOT MORE SO - IS WHO WE SHARE THESE EXPERIENCES WITH. SOAKING UP GLORIOUS SUN RAYS OR VIEWING THE NORTHERN LIGHTS ARE MEMORABLE AND ENJOYABLE IN THEIR OWN RIGHT BUT WITHOUT A WONDERFUL TRAVEL COMPANION, THE PLEASURE IS SIGNIFICANTLY DIMINISHED. With travelling increasingly opening up to us, a fascinating aspect of holidays is who we travel with. Be it a partner, family member or friend, the chemistry, balance of personalities and ability to compromise over travel issues is incredibly important.
your buddy wants to lie by the beach – who says you have to be together the whole time? A benefit of a group tour is that you can part ways with your mate and still be with other like-minded travellers on your tour so you’re never alone.
The right travel buddy can really impact the experience you have and even influence your opinion of the destination itself. There are stories of best friends travelling abroad together but to come home and never speak again or relationships really pushed to their limit.
Low-maintenance On an adventure holiday, you have to expect to get sand all over you or wet hair from watersports and even a little sweaty if you’re doing an acitve activity. Evidently, a perfect travel companion needs to be up for anything and not a high-maintenance individual. Sleeping on a felucca in Egypt means there are no loos on board and glamping in the Sahara may not have internet or wi-fi facilities – it is the luxuries in life you need to be happy to life without for a short period.
Here are some qualities to look for in the perfect travel companion:
Sense of humour When trains are delayed 15 hours or you have contracted conjuntivitus and a foreign Doctor has prescribed an eye patch – you need someone who will laugh it off with you. Travelling in a foreign country rarely goes to plan and besides, misshaps make for great stories. Interesting Would you really want to sit on an overnight bus or spend the majority of each day with a dull person? Travelling with someone else means you will be in close confines for long periods of time. You need someone who you’re comfortable chatting to about anything. In saying that, you also need to be comfortable just sitting in silence. While it’s natural to have conflicting opinions about things or places to see, it can work out for the best and force you to do interesting things you wouldn’t typically do.
Independent If you and your travel companion do have different interests or priorities, you need to be independent enough to spend time apart. Maybe you want to go snorkelling in Dahab but
In addition, a low-maintenance mate should be willing to try any food. The local cuisine is such a big part of any culture and while it’s reasonable if their stomach turns at the sight/ smell of some out-of-the-ordinary local delicacies, it’s a great way to experience the culture and may even be considered rude to decline an offer.
Organised You don’t want to be a Mum on a trip – cleaning up after your mate; covering their expenses; or waking them up for an early bus ride. A good travel companion should be organised enough to remember their passports, not lose their belongings and be able to get to the airport on time, to name a few. It’s also a plus if they are not navigationally challenge and can read a map. It can be difficult to find a friend or partner with compatible travel styles and personality traits but once you find them, you won’t want to let them go.
Vita Frederick, 23, loved holidays with her parents as a child. As with most teenagers, she then sought travel experiences with her friends. ‘It was great fun sharing experiences with my friends’, explains Vita, ‘but there was also a moment where I developed an appreciation for my earlier travel experiences. The important part for me is to enjoy both kinds of travel. Yes, the fun my friends and I have is, to be honest, age relevant but I can also share a different kind of enjoyment with my parents. As with most families, we have a shorthand and often known exactly what the other is thinking. Luckily, we also share a very similar sense of humour which is invaluable. My first trip abroad with friends was when I was 16. It felt terrific - very grown up and a little daunting which made it even more exciting. Since that holiday, I have naturally matured. I know planning is vital as are having contingencies if things don’t work out. Safety, money and simple common sense whilst away cannot be underestimated. Now, when I go away with my parents, I am just as likely and capable of suggesting places, researching areas of interest and offering ideas of what we can do together. Time away with parents and those close to you can be as fulfilling and fun as with anyone else in your life.’ Whether our travels take us near or to more exotic locations, there are important elements to consider. Where we visit, time of the year and what we desire from visiting new places. Our expectations can vary enormously but one resounding truth is that it is who we travel with that can make a huge difference to the whole experience. Our enjoyment is intrinsically linked to the person or people we choose to share these magical moments with.

HEALTH & WELLBEING
CLIMATE
and Diet
Making small changes to our diet can improve own well-being, and when eating sustainably we can reduce our carbon footprint and further improve our planet’s health. Although the stark effects of Climate Change may not yet be affecting our daily lives in Gibraltar, those in developing countries are experiencing hardships as a result of a planet under strain. Some of the world’s poorest countries are experiencing prolonged droughts that reduce crops, destroy livestock and affect water sources. Rising carbon dioxide levels can cause staple crops like rice and wheat to become less nutritious. Globally, approximately 800 million people lack food and many suffer from nutrient deficiencies. Plastic, which is used to package a great many of the food products we buy, is one of the most persistent pollutants on the planet. The manufacturing process for its creation produces billions of tonnes of greenhouse gases. Many items discarded after single use, and far too many ending up as pollutants in our ocean.
Make a small change today to help reduce your carbon footprint: • Be mindful of plastic packaging when purchasing a product. Check for plastic free alternatives. • Reduce the amount of red meat and dairy you consume. Livestock, in particular cows, account for around 14.5% of the world’s greenhouse gases. Instead, try to increase your intake • Choose fish species which are more abundant such as Mackerel or Herring, rather than species at risk of being overfished (e.g. Pollock or Tuna). If possible, try to buy fish that has been farmed sustainably. • Use a refillable water bottle when possible - to reduce plastic consumption.
Every year, approximately 8 million tons of plastic waste escapes into the oceans from coastal nationals.
Once at sea, the effects of sunlight, wind and wave action break down plastic waste into small particles.
• Opt for reusable containers or beeswax wraps instead of plastic wrap and aluminium foil when storing food.
These micro plastics are breaking down further into smaller and smaller pieces. This can affect air quality, water sources and foods such as seafood.
• Whenever possible, shop locally. Eating produce grown within your geographical region requires less travel, also referred to as “food miles”, to get to your plate and therefore helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Our relationship with food, what we eat and how we grow it, has a major impact on pollution and climate change.

STORY OF SELF, STORY OF US, STORY OF NOW EVERY YEAR THE FIRST WEEK OF AUGUST IS USED TO PROMOTE BREASTFEEDING. THIS YEAR, THE WORLD ALLIANCE FOR BREASTFEEDING ACTION (WABA) ARE ASKING US TO LOOK AT THE “WARM CHAIN” AND 'STEP UP FOR BREASTFEEDING’. The Warm Chain campaign considers all the various roles we play in supporting mums and babies to successfully breastfeed, helping to ensure that continuum of care throughout the first 1000 days. Breastfeeding is recognised as the best way to feed babies under 6 months meeting all their nutritional requirements whilst providing numerous immunological and attachment benefits for baby AND health benefits for mum. In Gibraltar breastfeeding rates are not as high as they could be. The Gibraltar Breastfeeding Association state around 70% of women wish to breastfeed but that this drops to around 40% after day 10; thus 30% of women who had hoped to continue have not been able to.
IS IT REALLY A BIG DEAL?
SO WHY NOT BREASTFEED? The choice of how to feed a baby is incredibly personal. There are a number of considerations that can act as either facilitators or barriers to breastfeeding, they include: • breast-related health (for example, women may have mastitis, breast engorgement, cracked nipples etc.) • emotional wellbeing • amount of sleep • time available • accuracy of information provided • the amount of support available With the right support it is proven that many more mothers would be able to breastfeed to 6 months and beyond.
Numerous studies highlight the benefits of breastfeeding. By scaling up breastfeeding to a near universal level it is said that around 823 000 annual child deaths (below 5 years of age), and 20 000 annual deaths from breast cancer, could be prevented. Benefits also extend beyond health. Children that are breastfed are associated with higher levels of intelligence and the economic losses attributed to a lack of breastfeeding are said to be about £242 billion per year.
HM Government of Gibraltar passed an amendment Bill in 2017 (reference the Equal Opportunities Act 2006) ensuring women have the right to breastfed in ‘any public space’ should they chose to; highlighting the importance of breastfeeding as a right.
HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT THIS WEEK? Breastfeeding is a skill that can take time to get the hang of. You can support a family’s breastfeeding journey in various ways. Identify your role in the Warm Chain and use the tips provided on the WABA information cards for ideas. Examples include: empowering parents to combine breastfeeding and work, collaborating with others to ensure support in different environments and/or sharing evidence-based information on the importance of breastfeeding. For more information see WABA.org. If you have any breastfeeding worries or concerns, speak to your midwife or health visitor. You can also find support from other breastfeeding mothers (See: Gibraltar Breastfeeding Association) #WABA #breastfeeding #WarmChain #StepUpForBreastfeeding

When it comes to summer, make sure that you stay topped up with natural beauty essentials from Holland Natural beauty products are, as the name suggests, beauty products made from natural ingredients rather than synthetic ingredients and now is the time to take advantage of 3 for the price of 2** offer on natural beauty products. As we get older our skin changes, and this is down to a few different factors including dehydration, so it is important to drink enough water, always use SPF sunscreen and eat lots of fruit and vegetables to give your skin the nutrients that it needs. There are several other lifestyle factors that can accelerate premature skin ageing. These include: Smoking –which contributes to wrinkles and a sallow, dull complexion. Pulling repetitive facial expressions - if you forever have raised eyebrows or squint a lot in the sun, this can contribute to deeper wrinkles. A pair of sunglasses should help your squinting habits! carbohydrates can contribute to premature ageing. Try swapping sugary snacks for fruits and vegetables to help your skin health, rather than hinder it. Too much alcohol - your skin has its own kind of hangover too! Alcohol dehydrates the skin, which can make us look older over time. Lack of exercise - moderate exercise has been found to improve circulation, which could help support the skin. Retinol is something that has increased in popularity over the years, becoming a staple product in skin care routines. Made from vitamin A, retinol is primarily used on the skin to reduce signs of ageing. As with all skincare products, it’s advisable to do your homework when purchasing retinol and start with a low strength formula, i.e. around 0.05% (unless you have a prescription-strength cream
from your GP). Start slowly by applying retinol once a week for a week, then two nights a week for two weeks, then three nights a week for three weeks etc. and build up your use of it over time. It’s also incredibly important that you apply an SPF 30+ to your skin.

PACS
That'’s a Wrap! END OF TERM FOR PACS
Our sessions have now come to an end for summer 2022. Many of our children will begin their next adventure by starting school in September. We will miss those little faces who regularly come to play and readily sing along, joyfully showing us their dance moves at song time or the creative skills at Cooking and Craft Club. It has been a pleasure to watch the children grow and progress through our playgroups, from babes in arms at our Bumps and Babies session, to the energetic and inquisitive pre-schoolers they have become. Good luck to parents and children as they start school in September. Attending playgroup is an excellent way to prepare for school. Children & parents alike form friendships at playgroup, so much so that the children can often recognise a familiar face on that first day at school. Playgroup prepares a child to feel confident being in new settings, explore different play, & learn to share and take turns. As we come to the end of term at PACS we can reflect on the year. We returned in September 2021 with a full timetable...something we were unsure would happen after the last few years! Our ever popular Totally Toddlers and of course the Firm Favourite, Diddy Discoverers took off with a flying start. We saw an increase in new Mum’s at Bumps & Babies, all of whom wanted to talk about their experiences of having babies during lockdown. This group provides such valued support to new parents. It’s really lovely to watch new friendships grow as mothers support mothers. Cooking Club also returned and proved to be as popular as ever. Our little cooks have enjoyed making lots of amazing things and we’ve been amazed by how skilled they’ve become. Last May, we introduced a new play session to the PACS family. Sensory Stories, which runs every Thursday from 1-2, at the Methodist church, catering for children 18 months and above. The popularity of this group has increased week on week and it's been a joy to see how much the children love books! But as many of our parents know, we’re always trying to find new ways to keep the children entertained. From September we introduced our monthly Craft Club. This gave the chil-
dren a chance to use their creative skills and of course create the kind of mess parents prefer not to have at home! One of our proudest achievements this year is the fact that we have been able to offer two Positive Parenting Courses working in conjunction with Childline. The parents definitely benefitted from the course and we were able to look after their little one’s whilst Ines from Childline delivered the course. And last but by no means least...after a lot of work and planning we have been delighted to offer a new group on a Tuesday morning at The Family Centre called “Play Sense.” It had come to our attention that some of the children find our sessions too overwhelming and loud. Play Sense is a Sensory Friendly playgroup session which is smaller, less structured and much quieter than our other sessions. To ensure this we restrict numbers and have a booking system in place. So far the feedback we have received from parents has been very positive and we’re so pleased to be able to offer such a valuable session. So, as you can see, PACS has had a very busy 2021 / 2022.. New sessions, old favourites and a lot of fun! Planning for September has already taken place and we’ve got lots of exciting things planned for our Autunm Term. We pride ourselves on being able to offer our sessions to the whole community. Apart from Cooking & Craft Club, we work purely on a donation basis. We are also run solely by volunteers, without whom we wouldn’t be able to operate. Come join us in September to see what we are about. And of course, if you’d like to volunteer we’d love to hear from you!

She would be very grateful for a family as she isn’t used to kennel life and is finding it very hard.
JARA
Spanish Dogs
Spanish Stray Dogs UK
Gentle Alfie had a home but was abandoned after his owner died. He gets on well with cats, dogs and children. He is a loving, gentle boy who is desperate to be made part of another family.
Jara arrived at Los Barrios pound in March ‘22 and was about 1,5 years old. We know that she once had an owner before due to the scar on her neck where her chip has been ripped out. Her ending up at the pound, is probably the best thing that could happen to her! Her energy and joy infect whoever approaches!! She is affectionate, playful, active, sweet and loving.

allergy season IS UPON US
THE DRY SEASON IS UPON US WHERE DOGS AND CATS SUFFER MOST FROM ALLERGIC REACTIONS AND WE MUST DO OUR UTMOST TO ALLEVIATE ANY DISCOMFORT YOUR PET MIGHT HAVE. With dogs the primary clinical manifestation of allergies is skin disease. The primary clinical sign is pruritus or itchiness and it is imperative that your pet is given relief as soon as possible. If they do not the actual act of scratching or licking leads to a secondary infection, bacterial and fungal, this then results in further pruritus and therefore you get a domino effect where the infection causes more itching and the problem escalates. Neglected skin allergies will lead to brown stained fur, thickened skin and often deep skin infections. Treatment is going to vary depending very much on the severity of the problem, the sooner it is treated the quicker it will resolve and the cheaper it will be. What you must be aware off is that skin allergies are unlikely to be resolved long term with one treatment. In the majority of cases they are seasonal and likely to be a persistent problem for the whole of the season. In some animals it becomes a problem that is there the year round. With seasonal pruritus the best treatment involves taking prophylactic medicine throughout the season and then stop it when the weather turns and it is cooler and there are not so many allergens around.
With pets where the skin condition persists throughout the year there are other options such as monthly injections or allergy testing so that a vaccine can be formulated specifically for the requirements of that individual animal. This has success in certain cases. Cats also suffer from allergic skin dermatitis but the primary symptom for felines is asthma. It follows a very similar pattern to human asthma, the cat develops respiratory distress with increased breathing rates and diaphragmatic breathing, and in most cases coughing. With cats, coughing is nearly always associated with asthma, in dogs on the other hand it is usually associated with heart failure. Treatment of cats with asthma should be as rapid as possible, there is nothing worse than respiratory distress and the feeling that you can’t get enough air into your lungs. This will involve aggressive steroid treatment to bring the condition under control. With recurring episodes of this disease there has to be some prophylaxis put into place, the best option is using an aero chamber with an inhaler, again similar to
humans. The only problem I have when I advise this is client and pet compliance, some animals can be difficult to treat this way so this can sometimes be an uphill battle. Dogs can sometimes suffer from asthma type symptoms but in the majority of these cases there is usually another factor that complicates the problem. The most common being that the owner is a smoker and this results in damage to the animals lungs due to passive smoking, so don’t smoke in the vicinity of your pet especially in enclosed spaces or better still don’t smoke. In summary for allergic conditions , treat early and aggressively and be prepared to give your pet prophylactic treatment throughout the season, that way you can all enjoy the summer.
