OPENER Following The Trail Of Carinthian Incentives

Weathermen forecast the end of the third summer heat wave, and so following the baking sunshine came the rains that unveil nature’s beauty, refreshing both our senses and the luminous views of the green panoramas offered by the Karavanke mountain range. The slender silhouettes of birches across its horizon tell the stories of a thousand lives and set the scene for a play of relaxed summer freedom and exciting days. Today’s dowsing of mercilessly falling raindrops that clean the magical backdrop of a vacation in the midst of the Alps is rather special and the pine tree in front of our apartment, standing like a summer sentry, is a solitary reminder of last week’s hot summer days.

demanding incentive groups. Here are some of my favourite incentive ideas you can find in Carinthia:

In any case, I love such rainy summer days more than the idyllic scenes of iconic postcards that can be found in front of every store. It’s on such days that I truly decide if I like a tourist destination or not, and sometimes even if it likes me! Our relationship can swing and evolve from hate at first sight to being long-term lovers. I could go on forever about places in the back of beyond that have either completely affronted me or left me feeling utterly charmed. Summer storms in the Adriatic scare the tourists away and appeal to the more adventurous, and chilled and refreshed tourist destinations can either shine in their true light or else fail miserably. It is when the richness of the offer reveals itself in its completely raw state. I’m also not the kind to be inclined to follow hordes of soaking wet tourists into shopping malls; I want to see the pearls that are usually hidden from the regular tourist’s eye.

Start off by visiting the Villacher Alpenstrasse that will lead you through green mountain meadows until after 14 kilometres you reach the Dobratsch Natural Park. Your eagerness to explore will probably be kicking in by then and you will want to drive up the Goldeck Panoramstrasse, near Spitall an der Drau, or the Nockalmstrasse near Bad Kleinkircheim. However, the queen of all the alpine roads is undoubtedly the Grossklockner High Alpine Road that nestles into the hills, follows the course of the landscape and wraps around the mountains like a glove.

When the attractiveness of a destination discloses itself to its very last atom, my mind starts wandering back to my student days, to a time when we talked about the index of touristic appeal with the legendary geographer Professor Jeršič. It’s mostly down to the contact between land and water, green forest borders, imposing peaks and basically everything that you won’t find at home. “Carum rarum” refreshed by the bad weather factor is starting to grow on me more each year. The more it’s out in the sticks, the happier I am, and those destinations are usually the most authentic, far from the seemingly endless tourist traps.

2. Wine tasting in Carinthia? Believe it or not, Carinthia is well known for its wine production and quality wines. It has been part of the region’s tradition since the middle ages, but became virtually non-existent soon after the first world war. The wine revolution started after 1972 and by the turn of the century Carinthia was already producing some excellent wines.

1. A rally through scenic Alpine mountain passes For those who love to step on the gas, the thrill of twisty bends and all in scenes of pristine nature are bound to have a blast on five of the most scenic and fascinating driving roads anywhere in the world, roads that have attracted car launch organisers and have served as backdrops for many popular movies. This can also be a great teambuilding programme that can involve testing out both your driving and geographical skills.

A rally programme can be spiced up with a treasure hunt at one of the many car museums that aren’t too hard to come by in Carinthia. The programme would require a full two days and the choice of vehicle all depends on how deep your pockets are.

Most of the winemakers are united under the weinauskarnten.at consortium and will be happy to share information about the region’s terroir and characteristics of the different wines with your incentive group. The predominant varieties are Chardonnay, Weissburgunder, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer and Blauer Burgunder. The main wine region stretches from Eastern Carinthia in Wolfsberg to St. Paul, and in a town called Sitterrsdorf you will even find the oldest wine cellars in Austria. The consortium brings together 25 passionate wine makers who are carrying on the wine making tradition in Carinthia.

With all this in mind and from a regional meeting planner’s perspective, Carinthia is definitely an overlooked incentive destination, which considering its wide array of teambuilding and fun motivational programmes is rather unfair. I dare say that the geographical triangle between Salzburg, Venice and Ljubljana is the European incentive offer epicentre with the most ideal conditions for further development. The somewhat forgotten Alpe Adria region is home to almost 30 million people and also some of the most successful and high profile European companies.

3. Tracking down the Carinthian Salmon and Caviar Karnten Laxn is a salmon trout from the Salmonidae family of ray-finned fish that used to be found in Carinthian lakes. It wasn’t uncommon for the fishermen to catch salmon trout that weighed over 20kg. People accredit the quality of their meat to the crystalclear water of Carinthian lakes and the fact that there aren’t many fish of this species swimming in them anymore.

My last trip to Carinthia was, therefore, a hunt for the best incentive programmes in the region, most of which function successfully on the market with a big focus on individual groups, although the programmes can easily be adapted to suit the more

5. Carinthia Slow-Food Journey The Slow Food Movement strives to keep alive traditional Carinthian dishes and ways of making them, maintaining the native livestock and produce, taking care of the consumer’s health, and generally ensuring a better sense of responsibility for the food industry. Carinthia has long been a “foody” heaven and the best way for your group to infiltrate the culinary heart and soul of the destination is through the slow food programme.

One of the oldest fish farms is located by Feld am See and it has been dealing with fish since 1950 – Kärnten Fisch. They also offer incentive programmes, where they will show you how to catch fish and tell you everything you should know about them. You will also be able to try out some of their famous fish products, from fresh fish, smoked and marinated trout to caviar, a culinary delicacy that has no match. After visiting the fish farm, you can test out the quality in one of the famous Carinthian restaurants that prepares the specialty with a lot of heart and passion.

You will follow old fashioned recipes and get a chance to learn how to make bread and cheese, brew your own beer and get familiar with the traditional way of making smoked ham and beekeeping. Carinthia’s cuisine isn’t just a food thing – it’s more of a way of life, a life that supports the local food industry, bio-diversity, native species of animals and plants, traditional produce and dishes, all whilst connecting production with good gastronomy. A dinner that incorporates all of the above will get you closer to the first-class culinary story of Carinthia in a creative and relaxed environment.

4. Eagle Show Landskron The remains of Landskron Castle near Villach conceal something quite special – a sanctuary for birds of prey, famous for its spectacular eagle shows. The “eagle arena” is the highest point of the Landskron hill, where beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and Villach have become the backdrop for the show. Almost three decades ago the bird shelter was the dream of Franz Schüttelkopf, the famous hawker, and today watching the birds swoop past your head, then fly sky high before beginning a sudden and fierce dive for the bait attached to the moving cable system is a truly exciting experience. All of the birds have been raised at the shelter and many of them had to be taught how to fly. The birds have a wing-span of up to 2 metres and Franz always ensures that they return to the starting point, his extended arm, protected by a thick leather glove.

We have gathered over 50 different ideas that will suit the tastes of everyone, from adrenaline enthusiasts right through to lovers of culinary and cultural programmes. Gorazd Čad Editor in Chief

During the show you will learn some interesting facts about the birds, their habits and how they live in the wild. The shelter also takes care of wounded wild birds, so they can be returned to nature. You can combine the experience with some great cuisine at the castle’s restaurant and its medieval spaces with scenic views.

UNFORGETTABLE INCENTIVES IN CARINTHIA

The entire Carinthian region is a hospitable, easily accessible and safe destination, set amidst alpine incentive destinations that are amongst the most attractive anywhere in the world. The prestige hotels and an excellent culinary offer are where Carinthia really shines and its incentive package with numerous programmes puts it at the very top of the offer in Europe.

improve motivation in the workplace and eliminate conflicts within the team. The integral part of these programmes is strategic team building activities in connection with an authentic experience of the destination they take place in. • Customer Loyalty A reward for the most loyal subscribers or partners who have achieved great sales results within the scope of your contract. By nature, this is one of the more exclusive types of incentive. • New Product Incentives When a company launches a new product, an incentive programme is usually a great way to motivate the buyers. These programmes are a common thing in the automotive industry, where car companies organise a whole array of incentive programmes for journalists, sales representatives, GMs and the whole service network.

Connecting different incentive programmes and bringing them together is the Carinthia Convention Bureau, an entity that takes a strategic approach to incentive travel. They offer over 60 programmes, usually a combination of education and active fun, but the one binding aspect of them all is that quality always outweighs quantity in Carinthia. In Carinthia they are also conscious that incentive programmes organised by companies for their employees have a positive effect on sales, productivity, loyalty and overall satisfaction. As incentive travel is a highly structured and strategic activity, it’s useful to go over the building blocks that make up Carinthia’s complete incentive product.

Carinthia has all the conditions to make your participants depart with positive impressions and it will undoubtedly tick all of the following boxes: • Improved collaboration within your team • Greater employee loyalty • Improved morale and a positive climate within the company • Improved work satisfaction • Stronger motivation to take on new challenges • More creativity

What is incentive travel? ‘Incentive’ or ‘motivational’ travel is a term we use to describe group trips organised by companies for their loyal employees. You can think of it as an award or an encouragement to keep good mutual relationships between the employees and business partners. They differ from classical group trips by being based on clearly stated and measurable targets and goals. Help with their organisation is usually provided by local DMCs (Destination Management Company) who know the local incentive products best.

Types and Examples of Incentive Programme in Carinthia Adrenaline Carinthia offers a rich palette of adrenaline programmes all condensed into a hugely picturesque area that will leave you with an unforgettable experience.

What types of incentive programmes are out there? The best way to categorize individual incentive programmes is to look at what their goal and purpose is, and they shouldn’t be mistaken for team building programmes, which are usually on the itinerary of classical group trips.

Active & Fun Fun games and creative programmes for groups of all sizes in the stunning setting of Carinthia’s Alpine summits and crystal-clear lakes.

The most common types of incentive programmes in Carinthia are: • Sales Incentive The main goal of such programmes is to influence and motivate employees in the field of sales and thereby drive results, a typical example being a programme that only the salespeople with the best results can attend. That gives the activity some extra competitiveness within a corporation. • Rewards and Recognition These programmes are a reward for a great team effort, usually carried out at the end of important strategic projects of a company. They are a big morale boost and are one of the most common forms of incentives. • Employee Motivation The goal of such programmes is to strengthen team bonds,

Cultural & Educational The ‘land of three countries’ is also known as the ‘land of a thousand lakes’, heavily defined by its borderland position. It’s a land where three nations have left their heavy imprints of their cultures and you can explore it for yourself through these programmes. Culinary Carinthia is well known as one of the most developed and attractive culinary hotspots of Europe. Through their fun, interactive and educational culinary programmes you will get the chance to experience the true depth and richness of the Alpe-Adria cuisine.

Active Experiences

Canoeing on the Faaker See

Rope-Climbing Park Taborhöhe

Discover the unique shoreline of the Faaker See

Combination of activity and fantastic views

Led by a canoe guide, you’ll set off from the Karnerhof dock to explore some of the more secluded spots on the Faaker See. Drifting on the water and driven forward solely by the engine of your muscles, the tour will take your team along the shoreline to the “reedy alley”, after which the team will enjoy a unique experience at the feet of the picturesque Karawank mountains. Participants can later fortify themselves with a picnic of fresh Carinthian cold cuts, cheeses and snacks from organic farmers in the area ahead of some more canoeing endeavour.

On the heights of the Tabor, the local mountain towering above the Hotel Karnerhof, you’ll find the perfect place for an exciting and entertaining kind of outdoor team-building: the Hoch Hinauf rope-climbing park. You and your team will enjoy inspiring views over the Faaker See and the Carinthian landscape as you navigate from tree to tree at heights of between 3 and 20 metres. You’ll balance your way across bridges, move along ropes hand by hand, and leap from platform to platform. The park features 6 different courses, each with 6 to 11 stations of varying difficulty, providing you with a wide range of possible challenges and combinations. Of course, team cooperation is the key to successfully mastering this exciting course. You’ll be safely accompanied by qualified trainers for the entire time, and your day in the forest comes to a close with food and drink at the Tabor mountain hut.

Ragga Gorge Adventure

Alpine Horse Riding

The “Gorge of all Gorges”

Horse riding at 3,000m

Over thousands of years the Ragga river has carved out one of the most beautiful canyons of all the Alps. Wooden bridges and steps offer you the chance to safely traverse this magical and magnificent natural wonder covering a length of around 800m long and 200m high. On the way you’ll pass several waterfalls, impressive rock formations and gorges so narrow that they almost block out the sky. There are also forests as you take the trail overlooking the Möll valley, the village of Flattach and the surrounding mountain ranges of the Hohe Tauern. The Ragga trail takes about an hour and a half to complete and if you bring your Kärnten Card the admission is free.

The distinctiveness of the natural and cultural landscape is what has made the Hohen Tauern region a national park. Together with their business partners, Landgut Moserhof’s experienced riders organise riding tours that take you through enchanted forests to then emerge into the seemingly impenetrable and almost lunar high mountain environment at an altitude of 2,000m. Seeing the wonders of the High Alps whilst on horseback is an extraordinary adventure even for the most experienced of riders. The Moserhof has a 200km long horse track network and therefore the options for exploration are truly endless. They offer tours for the more advanced riders as well as complete beginners, but worry not, as the strong but gentle horses will lead you very safely over the summits.

Skiing With Ski Legend Franz Klammer

Klagenfurt Escape Room Sherlock escape room

Conquering the black slopes of Bad Kleinkirchheim

Escape room is a popular interactive game that has been around for quite a while now. You and your partners in crime will have 60 minutes to escape from the locked room using only your creative mind, team work and some common sense. The Klagenfurt Escape Room was designed in 19th century style and is full of hidden riddles and hints. In true Sherlock Holmes spirit, you will have to solve one puzzle to get to the next one, finally reaching your mission of escaping. You don’t need any additional equipment to play the game, and neither do you need knowledge. Just logical thinking and the ability to connect the dots. To make things even more interesting, you only have a limited time to escape and whichever team escapes the fastest, wins.

It may still be dark outside, but hopefully you will be wide awake just before 6:00 am - because the slopes are calling for you! And guess who else is waiting for you at the slopes – no less than Olympic medalist and ski legend Franz Klammer, who will be your skiing companion for the day. You start at the Kaiserburg cable car station and make your way up Bad Kleinkirchheim, to then carve your way back down the perfect slopes, including the world cup slope named after him (which boasts sections with a gradient of up to 80%). When the sun finally peeks out from above the mountain tops your ski experience will be simply perfect. After so much activity and fresh air, you won’t have to wait long for hunger to strike. It’s then time to simply head back up to the Klammerstubn where you will enjoy a wonderful brunch with regional treats. Traktor rally

Teambuilding in the hotel village

Just like in the olden days

High Ropes Course

Besides being an excellent spa hotel, offering wellness treatments and massages, Pulverer Thermenwelt also offers numerous possibilities for incentive experiences. One of their most interesting activities is a nostalgic ride into the countryside with antique tractors. Along the way, you will encounter different sport, culture and local food challenges that you will have to tackle with your group. Fancy taking over the steering wheel yourself for once? This is when youthful dreams come true.

In the most southerly parts of Austria the unmolested and incomparable natural settings are by far its greatest assets. In this idyllic setting, congress organisers can also find a tourist village called Naturel Hoteldorf SCHÖNLEITN, a village that can be fully rented for your next incentive trip or special event. The latest addition to the infrastructure was an adrenaline park first built in 2010. High Roper Course is a training facility, for which the Pole, Flying Bridge and Kings X are just three convincing reasons to have a go at it. As this is activity-oriented and not desk or idea based the learning process is complete. Security is of paramount importance here, so the panoramic high ropes course is supervised by skilled guides.

Biosphere Reserve Nockberge

The Nockalm road

Feel the powers of mother Earth

Drive for pleasure

If nature is your thing, we recommend a visit to the Biosphere Park, which has been under UNESCO’s protection since 2016. Over a surface area of 184.3 km² the park extends across gentle, rounded mountain tops, alpine pastures and woodland. It provides a living space for humans, flora and fauna. With the help of an experienced ranger, your incentive group will get a chance to learn more about the bio-diversity of this alpine region near the Millstätter See. A particularly interesting attraction is the Karlbad, where pleasant baths are still prepared following an age-old custom. The entire hut is without electricity and is managed in traditional style. The journey will take you to places with numerous surprises like the art exhibition in Glocken and award you with impressive views on the panoramic roads. On the Zechneralm alpine pasture, the Mountain Farming Museum will take you back in time and the Pfandl Hut will delight you with its marmot exhibition. The programme includes an authentic Carinthian meal and an almost mandatory tasting of the famous Karlbadknödel.

The picturesque road near Bad Kleinkirchheim invites you to take a joyride with your car or motorbike and appreciate the beautiful scenery around you. In cooperation with local partners, you are offered the possibility to drive a wide selection of vehicles, from old time classics to the fastest of Porsches. Completed in 1981 the Nockalm Road is about 35 km long, starting in the municipality of Ebene Reichenau in the east, and in the municipality of Krems in Kärnten in the west. 52 bends of the panoramic road winding through the Nockberge will take you to an altitude of 2,042m at Eisentalhöhe. Besides the impressive natural landscape, alongside the route you will also find refreshment stops, rest areas and themed nature trails.

Adrenaline Experiences

Driving Carinthia’s Most Scenic Road

Quad tours in Nassfeld Alpine views that will take your breath away

Driving heaven

Quad tours offer several amazing tours that take you across different passes in the countryside as well as alpine pastures and high mountains, offering some of the best viewpoints of the stunning surrounding landscape. The experience is pure, wild, original and offers a great adrenalin rush while driving an ATV (all-terrain vehicle). For the wildest at heart, some off-road driving is also on offer – yet either way you experience it the tour offers unlimited amounts of fun and, if you wish, you can also plan your own very special quad tour. Safety is paramount and is our priority, but also keep in mind: with a bit of instruction anyone can drive an ATV, and you can also join the tour as a passenger.

Whether you’re a petrol head, a car launch organiser or simply just looking for your next incentive idea with a car, the Carinthia region in Austria is definitely worth a visit, as it offers some of the most scenic and spellbinding driving roads in the world. Twisting bends sunk between green mountain meadows, panoramic views of the Alps, rushes of healthy mountain air and glorious roads stretched out ahead of you all make for an unforgettable experience for both motorists and cyclists alike. One of the most famous roads is the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, located at the foot of Austria’s tallest mountain, the Grossglockner. The High Alpine Road takes you to an altitude of 2,571 metres above sea level, with its end point being the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe high above the Pasterze, the longest glacier in the Eastern Alps. It nestles up against the hills, follows the course of the natural terrain and fits around the mountains like a glove. River tubing on the River Gail

Trekking On The Pasterze Glacier

Top adventure for hot summer day

Hiking across the largest glacier in Austria

River tubing on the River Gail is a summer activity that will give you a lot of fun. Your team will definitely not forget this special experience in a hurry, as it is one that will definitely not keep them dry! You sit in a large tyre with a paddle and cross a number of waterfalls and rapids, accompanied by two professional tour guides who take care of your safety. This programme ensures a lot of adrenaline, but it does not require high levels of physical strength and is suitable for anyone. The River Gail will seduce you with its tranquil blue and green shades, and it offers a great cooling-off option during the hotter summer months.

The largest glacier in Austria, the Pasterze, lies within the Glockner Group of the High Tauern mountain region in Carinthia and directly beneath Austria’s highest mountain, the Grossglockner (3,798m). A glacier hike under the watchful eye of a nationally approved mountain guide is a unique experience that will make you appreciate the world’s natural wonders that have not yet been affected by human progress. Equipped with crampons, a hip belt and a rope you’ll start off the journey by taking a funicular and then make your way along the mighty glacier. The guide will share their knowledge about the glacier whilst you have the chance to admire its shimmering blue crevasses and icy rock formations. A very special point of the hike is the so-called Hufeisenbruch, where you can view the mighty towers of ice that have formed over centuries right at the foot of the Grossglockner.

Nocky Flitzer Sled Run

Bungee Jumping From Austria’s Biggest Dam Wall

An alpine rollercoaster of emotion

Only for the fearless

Through old pine forests, around fiercely banked curves, over adventurous waves and jumps. On the Nocky Flitzer at Turracher Höhe, a special sled runs you swiftly and safely down the valley – on rails up to 12 meters above ground. And if that is a bit too fast, a lever makes it easy to control the pace. At 2,000 meters above sea level, you start speeding downhill through idyllic alpine pastures and lush green forests following the contours of the Panorama slope. Along the way you get a stunning view of Lake Turrach and the Karawanken Mountains to the south. Jumps, waves and 3 spirals built into the 1-mile long track escalate the thrills even further. The Kölnbrein Dam is a concrete arch dam in the Hohe Tauern mountain range. It was constructed between 1971 and 1979 and at 200 metres, it is the tallest dam in Austria. Due to its placement in stunning nature, the dam is a popular filming location for automotive commercials and even served as a backdrop for the 1978 film The Boys From Brazil. Thanks to a horseshoe-shaped bridge, called the “skywalk”, adrenaline seekers can test their courage and take a plunge from around 165 meters into the depths. Everyone who still has enough energy afterwards can catch their breath during a dam tour or learn more about the background of electricity generation and the VERBUND power plants. But do check your calendar, as the Bungee Jumping Weekend at the Kölnbrein dam only takes place once a year.

Culinary Experiences

Carinthian Slow Food Journey

Schnaps Experience

Carinthia’s first-class culinary story

Schnaps tasting at the famous Pfau distillery

The Slow Food Movement strives to keep alive the traditional Carinthian dishes and the ways of making them, to maintain native livestock and produce, to take care of a consumer’s health, and generally to ensure a better sense of responsibility for the food industry. Carinthia has long been a “foody” heaven and the best way for your group to infiltrate the culinary heart and soul of the destination is through the slow food programme. Here you can follow old fashioned recipes and get a chance to learn how to make bread and cheese, brew your own beer and get familiar with the traditional way of making smoked ham and beekeeping. Carinthia’s cuisine isn’t just a food thing – it’s much more of a way of life.

If you are a lover of brandy then a visit to the Pfau distillery in Klagenfurt will definitely be right up your street. Time, patience, serenity and maturity have all been the ingredients that shaped the Pfau distillery under the management of Valentin Latschen, helping it develop from a small “basement distillery“ located in the family inn into a top distillery renowned all over Europe. Their fruit brandies have won numerous awards, which is no surprise at all, as Pfau processes only fresh, highly aromatic and fully matured fruit. Sugar is a no go in Pfau brandies, which are distilled in the “raw“ and “shine“ procedures exclusively in a copper vat.

Herbal Workshop with Christine Spazier

Tracking down Carinthian salmon Fishing for the famous Karnten Laxn

Learn more about the herbs and spices used in Carinthian cuisine

Kärnten Fisch is one of the oldest fish farms in Austria and they have been dealing with fish since 1950. It is located by Feld am See, which is famous for its crystal-clear lakes and the Karnten Laxn, a salmon trout from the Salmonidae family of ray-finned fish. Their restaurant is a household name amongst locals, but they also offer incentive programmes where they will show you how to catch fish and tell you everything you should know about them. You will also be able to try some of their famous fish products, from fresh fish smoked and marinated trout right through to caviar, a culinary delicacy that has no equal.

Christine Spazier’s Kräuterspatz offers hands-on workshops that get you acquainted with the positive physical effects of the herbs and spices used in Carinthia. Most people aren’t fully aware of how to recognize or use herbs and spices in their everyday life, which Christine wanted to change, so whilst you might have a thousand books in your cupboard it isn’t until you go out into the wild and pick the harvest for yourself that you are really able to recognize them. In the workshop you will learn how to determine the plants origin, what benefits you can reap from it, when is the best time to plant it and how you can best use it. In order to give full attention to every participant, the workshops are carried out in smaller groups, but they can also be carried out for organised congress groups or companies. Christine also gives regular insight into the herb world on her online blog and Facebook.

A culinary hike up Gerlitzen Mountain

Carinthian Caviar You have to try it to believe it

Stepping ever closer to your culinary nirvana

Shrouded in many myths, caviar is well known as a culinary ‘drug’. Good caviar doesn’t need artistically created dishes to shine, but rather it captivates the palate of any well seasoned gourmande with its own unique flavor. Each year, in autumn, the unique char caviar – which is now well known outside of Carinthia – is harvested. Using a specific process developed by the Sicher family, the caviar is preserved in a completely natural way. The “Sicher Carinthian Caviar” is, of course, offered in the Sicher restaurant, but is also featured as the “star of the menu” in many other highend restaurants both within and beyond Austria. Michael Sicher, the head chef, says that every now and then a pure spoon of caviar is an absolute delight for one’s well-being – you just have to make sure that the spoon is big enough!

Indulge yourself on tasty samples of Alps-Adriatic cuisine served by three quaint mountain huts along a leisurely walk during the “Kostale hike”. The journey starts at the bottom cable car station that will take you to the start of the hike, where you can enjoy breathtaking scenery of the Gerlitzen mountain range. The hike to the first Alpine hut, called Pöllinger Hütte, takes about 30 minutes, which is when you can enjoy the traditional “Kärnter Kasnudle”, which will boost your power and energy levels for the next 45 to 60 minutes hike to the Almseehütte. Here you will be able to try the juicy Alm Steaks before setting off for the next alpine hut, called Gipfelhaus, which is where different Strudle specialities are on offer. The Gelitzen experience is then completed by taking the chair lift back to the middle station, or if you fancy a bit more hiking you can also walk down yourself.

Cooking Class with Sissy Sonnleitner

Bath House Dinner 1st Carinthian bath house on Lake Millstätter See

The Grand Dame of the Carinthian culinary scene

Filled with light, fragrances and space, you can lose yourself in the 1st Carinthian bath house on Millstätter See all year round. The “Badehaus” offers a warm outdoor pool, an organic Swiss stone pine or spruce sauna, and pleasant massages with garnet stones or Swiss stone pine oils. To finish off your spa day and replenish your energies a visit to the “LOnda” restaurant is mandatory. It offers regional delicacies from Alpine-Adriatic cuisine, influenced by the culture of the three regions of Carinthia, Friulli and Slovenia, all with plenty of flair and inspiration. You can dine in your bathrobe in the part of the restaurant set aside for guests in midwellness, or as an external guest in the inside of the restaurant. It’s a perfect way to recharge your batteries after bathing, or to let a wonderful (holi)day end on a fitting note.

Sissy Sonnleitner is one of the most outstanding cooks in Austria. When tourism started changing in the 70s, Sissy and Kurt Sonnleitner had to look around for alternatives to their previous classical inn concept. The idea to start a cooking seminar was born and the Sonnleitner country house became an entanglement of local flavours together with heavy influences from Italy and the entire Alpe-Adria region. Sissy and her daughter Stefanie started an online cooking seminar, where they share their knowledge and love for authentic cuisine with ordinary food lovers (like us). If you yourself are not a connoisseur but want to become a cooking professional, you can take part in one of the cook seminars in the Sonnleitner restaurant or take one of their online cooking courses. The cook seminar is built up in modules with cool videos, amazing recipes, some theory and their complete know-how and practical tips.

Dinner on Lake Weissensee

A Visit To The Schleppe Brewery

Austria’s number 1. electrical hybrid passenger boat

400 years of beer-brewing tradition

“The Weissensee” lake is the fourth largest and most intact natural lake in Carinthia. Despite its elevation of 930m above sea level, its temperature can reach 24 degrees Celsius in the summer months, while in winter the water freezes over completely. Since 1957 the use of motorboats has been prohibited, except for agricultural use and Mueller’s passenger ships that offer cruises. Ms “Alpenperle” is actually Austria’s number 1. electrical hybrid passenger boat, powered by both diesel and electric engines. The liner brings you to the most beautiful shore areas that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to explore, with tours lasting around 2 hours, although these can be broken up by taking amazing walks in the national parks and a few stops in picturesque locations. Dinner cruises can be spiced up with live music, chilled drinks and excellent cuisine. Welcome aboard!

Schleppe Event Hall in Klagenfurt is truly a boutique and special venue with rich brewing history and a unique setting for various kind of events. Accompanied by a guide, the tour will give you special insight into the family secrets of brewing. The tour takes visitors through the brewery with an opportunity to try 2 sorts of refreshing beer and relax a little bit at the end of tour. The famous Pfau Distillery can also be included in the tour, as it recently moved under the same roof. Schleppe Brewery and Distillery is easy accessible, from A2 motorway take the exit “Klagenfurt-Nord” and after 2 kilometres you will find the brewery, you cannot miss the signs on the road.

Wine Tasting In Carinthia

Alpine Chalet Adventure

Wine revolution!

Rustic, cosy, homey experience

Believe it or not, Carinthia is well known for its wine production and quality wines. It has been part of the region’s tradition since the middle ages, but became virtually non-existent soon after the first world war. The wine revolution started after 1972 and by the turn of the century Carinthia was already producing some excellent wines. The consortium brings together 25 passionate wine makers who are carrying on the wine making tradition in Carinthia.

The Rossalm-Hütte Alpine Chalet or Nockalmhütte Chalet are a rustic Alpine chalet which can be reached either by hiking, biking, Nordic walking or with the tractor taxi. After stopping for a filling snack you will challenge your team spirit, self-control, creativity, fitness and skill. The evening highlights available include rustic chalet fun or an exclusive summit dinner. Fantastic Austrian cuisine is always on the agenda as a seat near the large, open fireplace with a view of the crackling fire.

When you finish your dinner, you can sneak out to the vantage point, breathe some fresh air and enjoy the impressive views. With an altitude of 2,001 meters, Kaiserburg restaurant truly does offer gourmet food at the highest level.

Bad Kleinkirchheim is a ski resort that can satisfy the needs of the most impassioned skiers, as well as those who enjoy the culinary side of days on the slope. The skiing range prides itself on numerous mountain huts, famous for their authentic Carinhtian cuisine. Almost all of the huts are usually sun-kissed, but it can be quite fogy in the valley, so the best way to enjoy beautiful views while eating excellent food is to visit one of the huts. Each has its own specialty, from homemade schnapps, different forms of Carinthian dumplings and the omni-present apple strudel. The Unterwirth hut also has no shortage of specialties and everything they put on the table comes from their home farm. They also serve “Kletznnudeln”, traditional Carinthian pastry from cinnamon dough, sugar and melted brown butter. To make the whole experience even more memorable and fun, you can embark on a snowshoe journey to the huts, getting you closer to the primal ways of moving on snow. Company name

Eagle Show at Landskron Castle

Terra Mystica in Bad Bleiberg

Watching majestic birds fly right above your head

A multimedia adventure mine of superlatives

In a demonstration lasting about 45 minutes you get the chance to experience free-flying, majestic birds of prey in the up-current of the famous Landskron castle. After some breathtaking flights, the birds then return to the handler who is standing right in front of you, and which is when the behaviour and habits of these endangered species is explained in detail. Eagle shows take place two or three times a day during the summer months. Special demonstrations for groups are available with prior reservation. The primary aim of the eagle show is to let people have closer contact with birds of prey and owls, and to share some important facts about them. Having the opportunity to watching the birds swoop past your head, soar sky high and then immediately begin a fierce dive for the bait attached to a moving cable system is a truly exhilarating experience.

The mine tour into the mysterious, wondrous subterranean world begins with a 68m long miner’s slide, from which visitors then proceed on foot and ride on an authentic mining railway. Deep below ground, visitors are treated to a fascinating display of light and sound effects creating the illusion of water and smoke, and depicting the very creation of the earth itself, as well as the healing powers of nature. Throughout the mine there is a thermal tunnel climate of a constant temperature of 9 degrees Celsius that makes you breathe more easily. There is also the option of arranging a treasure hunt in which the adventurous treasure seekers, equipped with a flashlight, can find semi-precious stones that they can take home with them.

Museum of Mushrooms

Bonsai Experience

Discovering the fascinating world of mushrooms

Europe’s oldest and biggest Bonsai centre

Carinthia’s weather conditions and soothing climate make it a paradise for mushroom lovers. The mushroom museum near Villach is the only one in Austria, unique due to its largest number of living exhibits. You can learn interesting facts and stories about the many different kinds of mushrooms, their habitat and even their use in the kitchen. It’s a perfect way to start discovering the fascinating world of this noble fungus and maybe even start checking some out in your home town when you get back. You can also enjoy the mysterious world of crystals by watching and listening to a presentation of light and sound. And just a few steps after this you also get an interesting insight into a primeval forest.

The Bonsai Centre in Seeboden by the famous Millstätter See has been mastering the craft of Japanese garden design since 1976 and is today one of the oldest bonsai centres in all of Europe. With 3,000 Bonsai examples found across the more than 15,000 m² of exhibition and garden space, the centre is also the biggest in Europe too. The Zen Buddhism gardens are laid out in classical Japanese style and help to keep the culture of Bonsai gardening alive. Many of the exhibits are more than 100-years old and they are all unique in both their quality and appearance. The goal of the centre is to share the timelessness of bonsai cultivation with the future generations that are increasingly forgetting that good things can take time and patience to fully grow.

Affenberg – “Monkey Mountain”!

Stargazing on Gerlitzen Mountain

Just like in the jungle

A hotel with its very own observatory

Have you ever wished that zoo animals (non-dangerous ones, of course!) were uncaged to roam freely around you? Well, at the “Monkey Mountain” in Villach you are no longer just the observer looking into the cages – you are actually right in the middle of an enclosure of 160 Japanese macaques that are jumping around, swinging from the trees, diving into the water and even grabbing the caretaker by his trousers to be given their hard-earned cucumbers! The Affenberg is located at the foot of the famous medieval Landskron castle in northeastern Villach, just 15 minutes from the city centre. The monkey enclosure spreads across 4 hectares of space that has been adopted by the animals as their natural habitat.

Pacheiner observatory enjoys a breathtaking location on the Gerlitzen Moutain summit at an altitude of 1,900m and is considered to be the most modern and best equipped of any hotel in the country. This makes it a great place to enjoy stargazing at night or sun and nature observation during the day. Get a glimpse of the depths of the universe from the observation deck with a refractor telescope, the Celestron 80mm semiapochromatic lens.

The Citrus Garden

Fine Art In Kunsthaus Kollitsch

Austria’s First Organic Citrus Gardening

The whole spectrum of modern art

Situated at the picturesque Faaker See, the internationally renowned lemon garden is home to more than 250 citrus species from all over the world and the only garden of its kind in all of Austria. A tour of the garden provides visitors with many interesting facts and the tastings on offer show that lemons can be more than just a sour fruit. The greenhouse, covering an area of around 400m2, can be booked for a variety of celebrations that will add some Mediterranean flair to your event. Guests with special interests can register for presentations on history, botany, biodiversity, citrus plant care as well as tastings of garden products, including lemon iced tea, orange torte, lemon cake and marmalade.

At the beginning of 2014 Sigrun and Günther Kollitsch opened their new company headquarters, and in doing so they created not only a special place for their staff but also an appropriate setting with sufficient space for their personal sphere of interest – fine art. Based on this idea, the KUNSTHAUS: KOLLITSCH was founded, which enriches the office building with contemporary art and pursues the claim of combining work with art at a high level. The annually changing exhibitions include more than 100 exhibits by international artists and show contemporary works from the Kollitsch collection as well as loans. The Kollitsch collection is a private collection of contemporary art with an international perspective, and has been steadily built up over past years. Visitors who are interested in art will have the opportunity to view the exhibits during fixed opening times with no entrance fee, which is one of the beauties of this modern office building.

Architectural beauties of Wörthersee

Horse Therapy at Dienstl Gut A Paradise For Both Horses And People

A harmonious blend of old and new

Dienstl Gut is one of the most modern horse riding centres in Carinthia, widely praised for its architecture, location, and contact with its natural environment. When someone who isn’t directly connected to equestrianism visits this magical place, he or she can immediately tell that horses have a very relaxing effect on people as well as the on the general atmosphere. The centre offers horse riding classes as well as teambuilding programmes where you can spend some time with the beautiful animals and learn new things from the passionate people that take care of them. The classes are carried out in smaller groups (2-4 riders) and are also perfect for organised congress groups.

With the inauguration of the K.u.K Monarchy’s southern Railway in 1864, many Vienese came to Carinthia and started to build magnificent villas in a type of architecture that radiates a very special charm from its harmonious integration into the surrounding landscape. These villas were mainly constructed for the summer season and were not inhabited throughout the rest of the year. They were designed to relate to the lake and nature with parks around the villas, boathouses and bathing houses directly on the lake. A new era of construction has begun and the new buildings are proving that they can co-exist in complete harmony with the historic lake architecture. Wörthersee Architektur created a comprehensive collection of the most eye-catching buildings around lake Wörthersee, together with a detailed map and information. So, why not take a drive around the lake, or better yet, rent a boat and experience the architecture up-close. A night in the Casino

Gurk power station

Perfect mix of gaming, high-end cuisine and entertainment for meetings

Green electricity Your group will find our more about the beginning of electricty generation. The place is wonderfull also as a special venue. This 110 year-old power plant serves both as a museum of technology as well as a modern power-generating facility. The Rain power station was hooked up to the power grid on February 2nd 1902. One of its first customers was then-mayor Julius Christof Neuner, in whose home the very first electric light in Klagenfurt would burn. Byt the end of this first year of operation, there were already 870 power customers with 12,000 light bulbs, 30 arc lamps, 94 electric irons and 61 engines. By 1911 there was sufficient capacity to electrify the city’s tram system, which until then had been drawn by horses. The Rain works was in fact the main supplier for Central Carinthia until 1923. Only in 1925 was the Forstsee power plant added to the power grid.

More than anything else the Casino Velden, in business since 1950, has brought the lake its reputation of being the ‘Austrian Monte Carlo’, very quickly consolidating the image of Velden as one of the most prestigious Austrian tourist destinations. A very nice congress product has developed within the casino industry, which is based on the 364 days offer of gaming and other entertainment events. You can organise an event in James Bond-style at Wörthersee and they can also bring the casino to your event at other locations with an offer that includes a variety of gaming options including roulette, blackjack, poker or the wheel of fortune. Slalom Principle

Sommeregg is a medieval castle near Seeboden built in the 12th century by Witemarus von Sommeregg. Its history was marked by the Austrian–Hungarian War and its dungeons have been transformed into Europe’s biggest Torture Museum with more than 100 true-to-original exhibits. The castle is also famous for its medieval reenactments and your incentive group can be part of their very own authentic historical tournament. The vintage bus is perfect for special occasions, anniversaries, celebratory events, bringing back the memories, and for the true experience of the past. The trip starts at Historama, the largest private museum of engineering and traffic, located in the former nail factory in Ferlach. More than 500 displayed exhibits will certainly fascinate you. Additionally, you will be amazed by more than dozen buses that were built between 1949 and 1984, and span all the way from Steyr cabrios to the legendary Saurers.

A whistle – and the train starts its journey through the lovely landscape of the Rosental. During the trip there is a special “foto-stop” at “Carnica”-halt. After arriving at Ferlach station approx. 45 minutes after departure from Weizelsdorf, you have the choice to board a vintage bus or tramway for the short ride to the Museum Historama (Museum for Technic and Transport) on the outskirts of Ferlach. The museum offers a wide range of Oldtimers, historic emergencycars, tramways and even ships. Or have a look at our “household”department to discover washing-machines from the 1930s. The road located between Innerkrems in the north and Ebene Reichenau in the south is, without a doubt, one of the most varied and beautiful alpine roads you can experience by car, motorbike or bus. The panoramic road winds up and down between the “Nock’n” through 52 bends and numerous turns with gentle incline. Numerous free exhibitions can be discovered in the Nockalmhof Biosphere Park Center and hiking in the habitat of the treasured spike lavender plant is just as much fun as visiting the numerous alpine huts and mountain inns.

Located at the foot of Austria’s tallest mountain, the High Alpine Road takes you up as high as 2,571 meters above sea level. The end point is the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe high above the Pasterze, the longest glacier in the Eastern Alps.
