Conventa is entering its second decade Dear Conventa participants, It is not just the last year that has passed so quickly. The whole decade of Conventa has flown by. In its first decade it has built its pillars and positioned itself as an essential marketing event for the region of New Europe. In the last ten years Conventa has welcomed over 2,500 clients from 48 countries. This is a fantastic achievement for a boutique show. This great success has only been possible with the great destination partnership, support from the Slovenian Tourist Board and loyal exhibitors. We are proud that Conventa is entering its second decade. Even more exciting times are coming and we are ready. Conventa understands the importance of innovation and delivering the highest possible value to hosted buyers and exhibitors. Therefore, expect to experience something new this year too. Something that will make your participation more memorable but also more successful. At the end of the day, the Conventa experience is a business event that will unite almost 500 participants from over 40 countries, who will hold more than 4,000 meetings. On the other hand, the slogan EXPLORE, MEET, CREATE has not changed, as it is still valid. Every year, Conventa invites clients in order to explore New Europe. They meet exhibitors that enable them to create amazing programmes and solutions. Finally, I want to share with you something I did last year. “We have invested all of our knowledge, positive energy and passion into making this year’s Conventa another great success. Enjoy this moment and invest your energy into this year’s Conventa too. You can only receive it if you share it!”

THE CONGRESS TRIBE OF CONVENTA CONVENTA, PERSONALLY At least for me, Conventa is full of memories. Memories of meetings with colleagues, especially those who have become friends during the past decade; memories of heated discussions about the region and the future of the meetings industry. Debates among dedicated professionals are a thing of beauty – we learn and inspire one another, building the story of the meetings industry of New Europe. It makes me wonder whether such personal experience can really be replaced by the virtual tools that are evangelised so enthusiastically by the many preachers of technology. I am convinced that no technology could possibly replace the personal contact we repeatedly facilitate every January and that has become something of a ritual. It is human nature to meet, socialise, rejoice and exchange views, advancing in our professions. Conventa is not just a tool that enables meetings. It is a platform that helps the regional meetings industry understand current trends and anticipates future ones, and this year, we are especially proud of the first publication of a study researching the future of event organisation. Conventa is also our partners, who, despite being overlooked by most of the participants, are indispensable for the very existence of Conventa. Conventa is a collaboration of 12 partners taking care of every last detail that goes into the Conventa experience. A decade later we operate as a well-coordinated team, continuously refining the personal experience of the participants. Last but not least, there is the heart of Conventa, an enthusiastic and devoted team of eight professionals who keep proving themselves and adding value to the event year after year. It is a great responsibility and it really matters who you organise the event with. I am sincerely proud of my team; they readily invest numerous hours of work into the project and reach newer and newer heights. Conventa is changing, adapting to the new demands posed by the customers and the exhibitors. For some, Conventa is too big – for others, too small. Some resent our achievements, still others would prefer to turn everything on its head. I, for one, am proud of Conventa; I have had countless times been reassured that we are on the right path. Conventa is resilient and we have plenty of energy for another decade of development. I am confident that this is not the last jubilee we will celebrate.

Dear guests, partners, and participants of the 11th CONVENTA – TRADE SHOW FOR MEETINGS, EVENTS & INCENTIVE TRAVEL OF THE NEW EUROPE It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Slovenia for the 11th Conventa trade show, the leading business-to-business MICE industry event of the New Europe. We are very proud that this trade show is growing in quality and attracts new exhibitors and buyers from all over the world each year. Partners, it is very important to us that you recognised Slovenia as an attractive and reliable partner in the field of MICE tourism. According to our Strategy for Sustainable Growth of Slovenian Tourism 2017– 2021, MICE is one of the leading tourist products of Slovenian tourism. Our strategic vision for Slovenian tourism is Slovenia as a global green boutique destination for demanding guests who are seeking a diverse and active experience, peace of mind and personal benefits. In 11 months of 2018, more tourists visited Slovenia than in the whole of 2017. There were more than 5.3 million tourist arrivals and over 14.5 million overnight tourist stays in 11 months of 2018. Big, international events, fairs, workshops and trade shows, such as Conventa, are very important for recognition of Slovenia as an attractive tourist destination and important player in the global tourism market. This year Conventa is hosting exhibitors of MICE services from 15 countries, who will meet at several one-to-one meetings with over 180 international and regional hosted buyers from 40 countries. These are record-breaking numbers for the Conventa trade show since its inauguration in 2009. We believe that there will be many contracts signed among the partners, especially because Slovenia won the title “European Region of Gastronomy 2021”. It is a well-known fact that gastronomy is an important part of the complete MICE product and an authentic destination experience. The Slovenian Convention Bureau and Toleranca Marketing have successfully organised Conventa in Ljubljana for the past 10 years. If we put those 10 years into numbers, over 29,150 B2B meetings were carried out, which resulted in many successful new business relationships. The trade shows have hosted more than 1,319 exhibitors and over 2,576 hosted buyers from 48 countries. But Conventa is not only about fruitful meetings, the educational modules, fam trips, awards ceremony, and the interesting, dynamic social programme that offers many opportunities for networking and gathering, are also an important part of each year’s Conventa. Please allow me to use this opportunity to congratulate to organisers and all the partners of Conventa team, as well as to all of you for being our regular partners and welcome guests.

ZDRAVKO POČIVALŠEK Minister of Economy Development and Technology of the Republic of Slovenia

We are very honoured that Slovenia is a central meeting point for top players from the MICE industry of the New Europe and that every year we have welcome new participants from various overseas countries. The Conventa trade show is the event that builds cooperation and links the MICE industry from the region and outwards with various tourism stakeholders. I hope that you will have the opportunity to feel our “Green. Active. Healthy” tourist destination and discover various possibilities for co-operation. Tourism is the economic branch where innovation, attractive products, effective marketing, and international co-operation are of vital importance and you are attending the event where all of this is combined. We wish you much success and many fruitful meetings as well as plenty of positive, creative energy and a pleasant stay in Slovenia.

Dear guests - hosted buyers, business visitors, exhibitors and partners, may I warmly welcome you to the 11th edition of the Conventa Experience in what is for me the most beautiful city in the world! I’m very glad to say that Conventa has established itself as the leading business-to-business event and knowledge-hub for meeting professionals in New Europe. It has also proven to being instrumental in boosting Ljubljana’s development as a prime MICE destination. In the past decade Ljubljana has evolved into a modern European capital boasting all the attributes of a metropolis, while still preserving a lovely small city authenticity. A number of prestigious international accolades have reaffirmed its status and brand on the international market, with a special mention of the award I am most proud of - the prestigious title of European Green Capital 2016. The meeting industry has always been an integral part of Ljubljana’s tourist offer in which we recognize a high potential also in the future. A recent Congress delegates’ survey carried out by Ljubljana Tourism demonstrates that business travellers and specially congress delegates are indeed highly desirable visitors of Ljubljana, generating multiplicative positive effects on the destination, besides a higher expenditure and an extended stay, longer than the average. I am delighted to underline a new wave of investments that we’ve recently seen in the city or are announced for the near future. In the next few years, Ljubljana will upgrade its congress offer with a number of modern hotels with conference facilities, and a new hall at the GR Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre - that will accommodate up to 3000 guests. In addition to the second congress centre, Cankarjev dom - CD Congress Centre, which is within short walking distance from the Old Town, a number of easily reachable historical and contemporary special venues and attractive outdoor settings contribute to the diversity of our destination’s portfolio. The very pristine local energy and warm hospitality are other elements that visitors appreciate in Ljubljana, therefore I perfectly understand why many international business professionals are already genuinely enthusiastic upon their first visit here. Ljubljana is a city that successfully combines both, being a lively capital for people committed to sustainable urban and tourism development on one hand, and attentively nourishing its rich cultural and historical legacy on the other. Our success story is the result of the extraordinary number of projects - over 2,000 in 12 years – aimed at improving the citizens’ quality of life while carefully taking into account the characteristics of the natural environment. Ljubljana’s transformation over the past years has not always been easy, yet working side by side with our local stakeholders we managed to prove that the mixture of expertise, vision and passion are the necessary features in order to implement changes that benefit local residents and visitors alike. I’m delighted to see that Ljubljana is being showcased again this year to the most demanding business meeting organizers from Europe and beyond. I’d like to express my congratulations to the organisers and all their partners who have continuously supported and believed in this project. As the event is entering a new decade, I can only wish you a lot of courage and self-confidence when facing challenges, while not doubting the creativity and innovative ideas you have in store.

ZORAN JANKOVIĆ Mayor of Ljubljana

And a tip for all Conventa participants: try taking a stroll through Ljubljana’s romantic alleys and cobbled streets at the end of your busy day, stop for a while by one of the bridges and indulge in the abundance of local scents, thus experiencing the city’s atmosphere first hand. Believe me, by the end of the week you’ll already start planning your return - welcome back to Ljubljana any time! 7

Dear Conventa attendees, Welcome to Slovenia, a country increasingly seen as a congress destination with venues fit to provide expert organisation of small- and medium-scale congresses and other events. Slovenia boasts the reputation of being an excellent host, able to meet the most demanding expectations of guests seeking intensive event involvement and destination experience, and at the same time ensuring an exceptional price/quality ratio. Proper infrastructure, qualified personnel, and a great location, easily accessible from various parts of the world, contribute greatly to its attractiveness. The country’s numerous natural attractions have enabled Slovenian tourism to develop and promote green, active, and healthy tourist activities, while the rich cultural and historical heritage together with a varied contemporary art production spice up the Slovenian everyday. As a year-round destination with lots to offer all across the country, and thanks to good connections and short distances, Slovenia promises a colourful experience to all its visitors. Slovenian tourism strives to promote excellence, offer premium products and services, and provide 5-star experiences, and is at the same time committed to sustainable development. As part of the so-called Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism, the Slovenian Tourist Board developed the Slovenia Green excellence label. In only three years since its implementation and in accordance with strict international criteria, the label was awarded to 64 tourist destinations, providers, agencies, and attractions. In addition to that, concrete actions in the area of the project internationalisation and implementation of the European Tourism Scheme are under way. Slovenian efforts towards developing and promoting sustainable tourism have not gone unnoticed by renowned international organisations and media. Apart from making it to numerous shortlists and being featured on various covers, Slovenia has received two flattering awards: the National Geographic World Legacy Destination Leadership and the Sustainable Destinations Best of the Planet – Best of Europe. In less than a year, for example, Lonely Planet recommended and included Slovenia and some of its destinations on no fewer than three of its Lonely Planet’s Best lists. More great news for Slovenia is that it made it to the 2019 risk map, published by the international organisations International SOS and Control Risk, as one of the world’s seven safest countries for tourists. Slovenia is also gaining ever-greater recognition as a supreme gastronomic destination. Last year, after the resounding success of Ana Roš, who was crowned World’s Best Female Chef for 2017, after submitting an extremely complex candidature, Slovenia was awarded the European Region of Gastronomy 2021 title, and, in addition to that, the globally recognised Gault & Millau guide, considered a reference in the field of gastronomy, arrived in the country.

One of the key Slovenian advantages is the possibility to enrich congress and other events with a supreme offer featuring active, cultural, gastronomic, and wellness experiences which refine and variegate the stay for event attendees and those accompanying them. By incorporating 5-star elements into its offer, the destination provides for unforgettable premium authentic experiences. Ladies and gentlemen, we are glad that you decided to visit Conventa, one the most important international congress events. We hope you experience Slovenia at its best and fullest, and return, whether alone or with your loved ones, and choose our country for your next business event. We invite you to share your feelings about our county on social media by using the #ifeelsLOVEnia hashtag. 8

Ready for a new year? How about a new decade? Conventa, the New Europe exhibition for meetings, events & incentive travel, has entered a new decade, the second one – what a wonderful fact this is! And what a spectacular ride it has been for our city so far - eleven years full of exciting challenges, new developments and important international recognitions, all contributing to Ljubljana becoming a shining European example in the field of sustainable tourism and urban development. The Conventa show, which Ljubljana Tourism has eagerly supported since its very start, has become a regular appointment in the busy schedules of meeting professionals in Europe and beyond, thus also leaving a very positive mark on the image of Ljubljana as a congress destination. Its growing visibility in the international meeting industry market can be attributed to several factors, including continuous marketing efforts by the key local stakeholders active in the international associations and corporate events segments. We are well aware that the meetings industry impacts the destination in many positive ways - apart from boosting de-seasonalisation, increasing the guests’ expenditure and prolonging their stay, it indirectly creates new job opportunities, offers a platform for the exchange of scientific and business expertise, promotes high-profile scientific achievements in the international environment, shares and attracts innovative business ideas and raises the destination’s overall competitiveness. The ongoing expansion and quality improvement of the city’s tourist offer in a broader sense is another vital element enhancing Ljubljana’s destination appeal. I’m very glad to say that the beginning of the new Conventa phase directly coincides with a strong investment cycle in the city. In the next few years we will see an intensified development of city’s congress offer, particularly in the hotel sector. Several new hotel openings are planned in the next four years that will bring a range of modern capacities for various types of events. Right across the last »newcomer« - the InterContinental Ljubljana, which opened in September 2017, a new five-star property will start operating by the end of 2021. Two new 4* hotels are to be built in the city centre, another one right next to the main city stadium & arena - Stožice Centre, and one more in a business-residential area. A few smaller boutique hotel projects and renovations in the city centre are announced, too. From the current capacity of approximately 2,800 hotel rooms, their estimated number should reach 4,000 by 2025. Additionally, a brand new arrivals passenger terminal at the Ljubljana Airport is to be completed by spring 2021, and agreements for new destinations will go alongside. Is there anything else to say other than that the future seems bright? I’m confident that in the following years Ljubljana will pursue its development along a sustainable and smart city path, aiming to establish a prominent spot for itself on the map of top European MICE destinations. Well done, dear Conventa organizing team and all dedicated events professionals, I’m avidly looking forward to many more Januaries in Ljubljana, to many more meetings, business networking opportunities, many more brilliant speakers and guests from all around the world coming and exploring our city. And good luck, 11th Conventa, may the new decade be full of magic moments!

MEETINGS INDUSTRY 2030 CONVENTA FUTURE TRENDS SURVEY As the development of the event and meetings industry is getting faster by the minute, predicting the future has become virtually impossible. Most predictions are based on the visions of large tech companies but that only partially solves the problems of the industry. A big emphasis has been put on different tools that could help change the world of events. We decided to ask meeting planners for their opinion and 108 of them responded to our questionnaire. The survey took place between the 14th of November and 24th of December 2018.

The respondents are mostly optimistic about the future (as many as 85.6% of respondents are highly or moderately optimistic). The number of pessimists among the respondents is negligible.

A. STRUCTURE OF RESPONDENTS The question about the age of respondents in 2030, which is the target year of the survey, was particularly interesting. The survey was filled out by the currently most active event organisers who will be in 2030 in the following age structure: 51 - 70 years 71 years and more 36 - 50 years 26 - 35 years

52.6 % 24.7 % 21.6 % 1%

Meetings planners from 34 countries responded to our questions. Most of them were from Great Britain, Slovenia, Germany, Italy, Austria, Serbia, Portugal, Spain, France, and Belgium. The structure of the respondents was also interesting. The majority were part of companies that organise meetings, followed by PCO and DMC agencies: Corporate meeting planner 24 % Agency (PCO, DMC) 23 % Event agency 17 % Convention Bureaus and destination organisations 16 % Congress venues (hotels, convention centres) 5% Other 8 % More than half of the respondents (51%) organise more than 20 events per year, the second largest group form respondents who prepare 11 to 20 events per year (22.4%). The respondents usually organise medium-sized events with 41 to 200 participants (56.1%). The structure of the venues, where respondents organize events, is also interesting: Hotels 40,41 % Special venues 27,98 % Conference Centres 20,21 % Universities 6,74 % Other 4,66 %

B. WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES OF THE INDUSTRY TODAY? There is no direct link between megatrends and the current challenges of the industry. The present key challenges are namely the budgets of events, the way participants get acquainted, and the creative method for organising events. It is mostly about short-term challenges that the respondents can directly influence. As less important, they see challenges that are beyond their control and reach. A more detailed insight reveals some correlations which are also important for predicting the future, as it is a matter of challenges that are important today but will be crucial in the future. These are, in particular, the challenges of new technologies and digitalization and the question of safety at events. Event budgets 59.8 % Finding new ways to attract attendees 36.1 % Creative meetings and events methods 35.1 % Knowledge and competences 30.9 % Destination costs 28.9 % Keeping pace with technology 26.8 % Sponsorship at events 25.8 % Government and legal regulations 25.8 % Economic uncertainty 22.7 % ROI and Efficiency of meetings 22.7 % Digital transformation 21,6 % Attendee engagement 19.6 % Event security 17.5 % Attracting millennials 15.5 % Connectivity (cloud solutions, internet of things) 14.4 % Data protection (GDPR) 11.3 % Terrorism 11.3 % Extreme weather 8.2 % Other 4.1 % Housing pirates 3.1 % Alternative housing 2.1 % Pollution 1.0 %

C. WHAT MEGATRENDS WILL INFLUENCE AND CHALLENGE THE MEETINGS AND EVENTS INDUSTRY IN THE FUTURE? Respondents agree that the key trend that will affect the event organization will be technology, followed by sustainable development. Additional suggestions are also interesting; safety, which can be placed immediately after mobility, stands out and a number of respondents highlighted it as a megatrend.

Technology 73,5 % Sustainability 59,2 % Mobility 38,8 % Demographics 36,7 % Rise of the individual 27,6 % Sharing economy 27,6 % Circular economy 18,4 % Urbanisation 17,3 % Feminisation 11,2 % Other 5,1 %

The participants were asked to what extent they agree with the claims below. The question was intended to verify facts that directly correlate to megatrends in the future.

D. HOW WILL THE WAY OF ORGANISING EVENTS CHANGE OVER THE NEXT 20 YEARS AND WHAT WILL MOSTLY AFFECT THE PERFORMANCE?

Respondents ranked the following as their main priorities in the next 20 years. Participants satisfaction 7.0 Increasing number of contacts/leads 5.4 Improved engagement with clients 5.0 Revenue increase 4.8 Reaching the relevant audience 4.5 Team spirit 4.4 ROI 3.8 Other 1.1

In summary, the respondents consider that the most important aspects of the organization of events in the future will be: Content Average score: 4.8 Networking Average score: 4.7 Experience Average score: 4.0 Interaction Average score: 3.7 Fun Average score: 2.4 Passive participation Average score: 1.4

E. HOW IMPORTANT WILL THE DESTINATION EXPERIENCE BE IN THE FUTURE?

Predicting marketing trends is probably the most difficult. Nobody knows in what direction the marketing will develop. On the top of the scale, the pious desires of respondents were likely to be expected, which in the future await democratization of digital advertising. In practice that will be difficult, as it is currently dominated by global corporations.

Respondents believe that the experience of the destination will be an extremely important factor in choosing a destination. In this regard, they have a very unified opinion as most agree that this will remain an important part of the competitive advantage.

We asked the planners for their personal suggestions regarding the marketing challenges in the future.

The challenges of the future, on which the respondents can influence directly

The results are as follows: The destination experience will be extremely important The destination experience will be very important Experience of the destination will be less important The experience of the destination is partly important

The answers were divided into two sections.

72.9% 15.6% 10.4% 1.0 %

PayPal wasn’t invented by the banks, Amazon wasn’t invented by the retailers, Airbnb wasn’t invented by hoteliers.

The participants were also asked about the destinations of the future (countries and cities). The answer to this question was very dispersed, as it depends on a number of factors. Nevertheless, a sample of future destinations has been clarified. Among the countries, the respondents selected: Island Spain Portugal Austria Slovenia The countries of Central Europe and Scandinavia achieved high scores in the survey. Among the cities, most of the respondents chose: Barcelona Ljubljana Bratislava Dubai Berlin The answers about the cities are much more dispersed. Among the comments the main remark is that this will depend on the safety and accessibility of individual cities, as well as on their marketing.

RAPID TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT

Most of the respondents are alarmed by the rapid technological development. There is still a dilemma about the power of virtual meetings. The most interesting is thinking about technology as a tool for meetings and not the essence of meetings. Almost all of the respondents agree that the technological progress will be a key challenge in the future.

DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

Nowadays, it seems that there is no need to know anything; today we only need to know whether to search for it or to google it. Knowledge is available anywhere and anytime. There are seemingly invisible services around us, but they can expose old business models. Therefore, it is necessary to think about the total digitization of the organization of events.

COMMUNICATION IS IMPORTANT

Changed participants’ expectations will affect changes in the way of communicating with the participants. This issue is directly related to the rapid technological advancement that enables a more effective communication.

F. WHAT WILL BE THE CHANGES IN THE FIELD OF MARKETING? ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (VR In the marketing field, the changes will be extremely dynamic. We AND AI) checked the situation by asking a question which marketing channels will have the greatest decrease in consumption over the next 20 years? Search marketing 45.1 % Payable mobile messaging 45.1 % Digital banners 40.7 % Partner programmes 39.6 % Direct mail/E-monthly 38.5 % Social media 35.2 % Mobile applications 30.8 % Digital content marketing 28.6 % Video advertising 27.3 % Web pages 26.4 % SEO optimisation 23.1 %

Development of artificial intelligence will help us a lot with event organisation. Speech recognition, face recognition, self-driving cars, programs that solve the complex operations of organizing events. All this is possible today and it will be an everyday thing in the future.

CREATING UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCES

Experimenting with various forms, called “meeting design”, has become a standard. Knowing the context of the destination, authenticity and care for the environment is a part of the congress story which we are no longer discussing, but will continue to gain importance in the future. 14

PERSONAL AWARENESS

Interesting answers that raise new questions are:

Honesty and personal responsibility for everything we think and do. And our shared responsibility is a greater awareness and concern for people and the planet.

MEASURING ROI (THE ADDED VALUE OF EVENTS)

1.

Values will be crucial when creating content of the meetings. In the future, people will be connected on this basis.

2.

The key challenge will be to provide top-level personnel. We will have to deal more with the challenges of keeping them.

It sounds like an already heard phrase, but we live in a period when each member of the congress chain will have to offer more value. A new frame of reflection is directed at the participant and his needs.

CONTROLLING THE USE OF PARTICIPANTS PRIVATE DATA

3.

Flooding of various events and the problem of selection between them has become a major problem, especially due to generic copying of content.

4.

Meetings organizers collect information about the participants and in some way, they trade with the collected data. The organizers who are able to integrate data from different services and applications, which is now mostly done with cloud services, are in advantage. Privacy, anonymity and security, or communication encryption, are a challenge for the future. Challenges of the future, on which the respondents do not have a direct impact

The intergenerational gap will continue to deepen, the question is, what will be the response of the meetings industry to this question.

Moor law will have an extreme impact not only in the field of marketing, but in all fields of personal and private life. Moor law says: approximately every year and a half the performance of high performance integrated electronic circuit is doubling.

ACCESSIBILITY

In spite of the complexity of the congressional destinations, accessibility is still the key factor, which is closely correlated with the safety of destinations. There will be major changes in this area neither in the near future nor in the more distant future.

GLOBAL UNCERTAINTY

The key problem of the meetings industry is the unexpected political and economic events that can fatally affect the industry. We live in a period of continual global uncertainty.

ADAPTING TO DIFFERENT COUNTRIES

The “one size fits all” model is no longer possible. Global corporations will also have to tailor events to specific local markets and be as flexible as possible.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate change is a fact. On a global scale, we can only help with orientating in green meetings tourism. All the parts of the meetings industry: agencies, meeting organizers, hotel chains, tourist and convention bureaus are forced to start practicing sustainable measures.

NICHE MEETINGS DESTINATIONS AND PRODUCTS

Innovations are happening on the outskirts and there are new congress niches and products there. Today, there are countless meetings destinations and providers in the world and all of them want to succeed. The average destinations will simply not survive.

According to one of the respondents, the key challenges in the future will be: Challenge 1 Challenge 2 Challenge 3 Challenge 4 Challenge 5

Getting people’s attention Keeping people participating Being genuine Creating fresh ideas Understanding the client’s needs

OMG, IT’S CONVENTA EXPERIENCE! CONVENTA’S SURPRISES IN 2019 AN APPLE A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY

At the event, the soft and fresh apples of local origin will be at hand. We advise you to have each day a bite of this super fruit to maintain your health and good mood.

STOW COFFEE ROASTERS AT CONVENTA

From the very beginning, the Conventa story is symbolized by coffee. This year we will continue to upgrade our coffee experience. We invited the biggest Slovenian experts - the Stow café team, famous for its uncompromising quality. Professional baristas will make sure you get a coffee you cannot find at other events.

CONVENTA TV

During the event, a TV studio in which we will record interviews and prepare interesting stories from Conventa will operate. CONVENTA TV is integrated into the web portals www.kongres-magazine.eu and www.conventa.si, as well as into all social channels.

CONVENTA SLIK-SLIK EXPERIENCE

This year’s photo booth will be a special surprise that we are preparing together with the Slik-Slik company. Enjoy your visit at Conventa with unique photos that will make you laugh long after the event is over.

CONVENTA JINGLE

Every year, we prepare the Conventa with all our hearts, and we hope you will feel a part of this energy yourself! For boosting good energy, music will be concentrated in a special Conventa Jingle which will accompany you throughout the whole event.

LJUBLJANA DRAGON Did you know that Ljubljana was the city of dragons? Indeed, Ljubljana’s main symbol is a green dragon. Ljubljana even has a Dragon Bridge. In order to give you a proper experience of Slovenia’s capital, its green dragon will be flying around Conventa’s rooms and events. Watch out! We wish you a big dose of optimism, positive thinking, and good time in our company!

AUSTRIAN LIBRARY

In cooperation with Advantage Austria, you will be able to take some time out in the well-equipped Austrian library, located in the Marmorna Hall. The hosts will take care of the exciting literature and additional information on the Austrian conference offer.

CONVENTA WALL OF WISHES

You can write your personal and business wishes for 2019 on the Wall of Wishes. It is located in the lobby of the Marble Hall in the Conventa Stow coffee shop.

CONVENTA FUTURE TRENDS SURVEY

Since the development of the meetings industry is getting faster, forecasting the future is very ungrateful and much more difficult. That is why we decided to prepare a comprehensive survey which will be presented for the first time at this year’s Conventa. Key findings can be checked at the Conventa trend bar at 3:00 pm every day.

CONVENTA RELAXATION LOUNGE

At the TIME OUT Event’s Happy SPAce corner you can get a FREE 20 minute Access Bars Taster, a gentle stress-release, quiet-your-mind manual therapy that brings you back into balance and creates ease, peace and a sense of well-being similar to a massage or meditation. It is like formatting your hard disk to open up space for something different.

The event’s official caterers have been Conventa’s partners since its inception. The excellence of all of the partners has also been measurable, for we have been continuously receiving the highest evaluations for this part of the event. The Ambassador of Conventa award for 2019 goes to the ICCA (The International Congress and Convention Association) Among all the participating associations, the international association ICCA has been recognised as one of the most important. Besides this, all this time in terms of communication and strategy, the ICCA has been supporting the implementation of the project. With this, the ICCA significantly contributes to the development of the meetings industry and professionalisation of the industry as a whole.

MEET THE TEAM OF CONVENTA 2019

MIHA KOVAČIČ Exhibition Director

GORAZD ČAD Head of Marketing

Q:How did you get into the meetings industry? Fifteen years ago, when I was working for the largest tour operator in the country, the M&IT department head invited me to join the team and I have not left the industry since then, despite a few years after that changing to the convention hotel and eight years ago to the national convention bureau. It’s a challenging but rewarding experience contributing to the development of the industry.

Q: How did you get into the meetings industry? I was first inspired by the meetings industry at Cankarjev dom, where I worked as a student. At that time it was virtually the only convention centre and PCO in Slovenia, which gave me a lot of knowledge and connections, and it was a long time infection that still lasts to this day. In the interim, I also tried my hand as a hotelier, but my passion for the meetings industry and organisation led me to start my own company which, in addition to other projects, we are co-creating Conventa.

Q: What is the most positive thing about Conventa? It is difficult, or almost impossible, to name the most positive one, as there are so many and they are all connected to each other. Conventa is also a development project, so things are changing every year. One of them is definitely positioning Slovenia and South East Europe on the international meetings map. The next one could be uniting the meetings industry of the region and developing its product and its potential, but also demonstrating its value and contribution to national economies. Q: Career high? I am in the middle of my professional career. The first half has been great, so I am looking forward for the second half. Q: Now, let’s get a bit more personal... three words that describe you best? Work-hard, play-hard, being-me. Q: If you weren’t working in the meetings industry, what other profession would you be doing? Global top innovative blue chip corporation. Q: If you could fly off to any destination in the world, which one would it be? Winter / spring / summer / autumn / alone / with partner / family / friends / weekend / week / month / year – How many answers may I give you? Q: What always makes you smile? Friends and some colleagues, but also passionate people.

Q: What is the most positive thing about Conventa? It is definitely the special energy that we have managed to create at the event and for which much larger congress organisers envy us. The energy is the result of Conventa being prepared by highly experienced organisers who try to understand the buyers’ needs as well as those of exhibitors. At the same time the whole event is conceived as a boutique experience. Q: Career high? In my long career there have been a lot of events that could be described as peaks, depending on the period. Of the congresses, the highlight was definitely the largest congress in Slovenia’s history, the Apimondia Congress, which was organised in 2003 in Cankarjev dom. Today, the greatest challenge and at the same time greatest satisfaction is managing my own firm, and I am especially excited by changes in the field of content marketing that we are trying to promote through the production of the Kongres magazine. Q: Now, let’s get a bit more personal... three words that describe you best? Rock’n’roll. Q: If you weren’t working in the meetings industry, what other profession would you be doing? As a geographer by heart, I would probably travel around the world and write travelogues 22

about the most unusual places I visited. Q: If you could fly off to any destination in the world, which one would it be? I would travel the length and breadth of Russia and explore the endless expanse of Siberia. Q: What always makes you smile? The morning walks with my flat-coated retriever, whose name is Bodo.

NATALIJA BAH ČAD Exhibitor and Social Programme Manager

ANA ROBIČ ZIMA Hosted Buyer Manager

MAJA MIRTIČ Hosted Buyer Manager

Q: How did you get into the meetings industry? During my study at the Faculty of Arts I was working as a hostess at Cankarjev dom, the Congress and Cultural Centre in Ljubljana. At that time I first had the chance to get in contact with congress participants, which was a very interesting experience. When there was an opportunity to start working in the PCO department, I knew that it was what I wanted to do. And I stayed there for 10 years…

Q: How did you get into the meetings industry? Actually, it was by sweet coincidence. After Future Leaders Forum 2016, where I got excited about the MICE industry, I was looking for a job in this field. One year later I met Natalija and Gorazd at Conventa Crossover, and the rest is history. :)

Q: How did you get into the meetings industry? By coincidence. My work colleague Ana, who I can now call my friend, has introduced me to the industry.

Q: What is the most positive thing about Conventa? I have been involved in the organisation of the biggest congresses held in Ljubljana with very complex logistics, but Conventa is special. Firstly, because we made it happen from scratch. And every year the challenge is how to make it even more effective for providers and hosted buyers. Q: Career high? After 17 years in the meetings industry, I still see a lot of challenges. For sure I will continue my work as a congress organiser and share my experiences with younger colleagues who would also like to work in the meetings industry. Q: Now, let’s get a bit more personal... three words that describe you best? 3C: calm, creative, curious. Q: If you weren’t working in the meetings industry, what other profession would you be doing? Hmm…if not a meeting planner, then I would probably try it as a designer. Q: If you could fly off to any destination in the world, which one would it be? I am dreaming about Africa.

Q: What is the most positive thing about Conventa? The endless possibilities of the Conventa participants, from finding new business partners and business opportunities to a reunion with old colleagues, and all this in the friendly atmosphere that is the Conventa Experience. Q: Career high? Well, actually, my career in the MICE Industry has just taken off and so I am looking forward to everything…all the ups and downs… Q: Now, let’s get a bit more personal... three words that describe you best: “Is there coffee?” Q: If you weren’t working in the meetings industry, what other profession would you be doing? I would probably work in the wine industry, or maybe I would have a small restaurant with local food and wine. Or maybe a dog shelter…huh…how much space do i have for this answer?? :) Q: If you could fly off to any destination in the world, which one would it be? Southern Italy. Q: What always makes you smile? Dogs, new wine discoveries, honest people, fresh coffee, the first snowfall…

Q: What always makes you smile? Nice sunny mornings.

23

Q: What is the most positive thing about Conventa? People. From the organizing team, business partners, hosted buyers to exhibitors. Q: Career high? Upcoming Conventa. Q: Now, let’s get a bit more personal … three words that describe you best? Positive, persistent, sensible. Q: If you weren’t working in the meetings industry, what other profession would you be doing? I would be working something in the mixture or in the field of public relations and international relations. Q: If you could fly off to any destination in the world, which one would it be? Iceland. Q: What always makes you smile? Positive people.

Q: If you could fly off to any destination in the world, which one would it be? Just one? But I have so many in mind. Maybe the first one that pops into my mind is New Zealand. Q: What always makes you smile? Awesome people with a good sense of humour. And cats, cats are funny.

MEETINGS STAR AWARD “MEETINGS STAR AWARDS ARE TAILOR-MADE FOR MEETING PLANNERS.” In 2018, the Meetings Star award, together with Conventa, celebrated its 10th anniversary. In the decade of its existence, the Meetings Star award has become recognisable among event organisers and professionals as one of the few accolades that is awarded on the basis of professionally established standards and criteria. Our attentively designed programme is a shortcut to unveiling the many qualities of Ljubljana for meetings & incentives in just more than one day. The positive feedbacks from the participants over the past four years are our motivation to be even more creative in 2019. Hosted Buyers are therefore invited to embark on a 24-hours journey (sleep excluded) in order to get a real feel of the capital of Slovenia – which also prides itself being the European Green Capital in 2016.

Connecting the meeting experience with the local traditions of the Alpine Region will be the leading theme of the Conventa FAM TRIP 2019 to Bled. As a destination for small to medium-sized events, Bled offers breath-taking views over a glacial Alpine lake. Bled can host events for up to 550 delegates, with first-rate meetings and accommodation facilities all within walking distance. Special venues and gourmet cuisine all make Bled a very special experience.

Visit Bohinj – a boutique, charming and wonderfully mysterious region in Slovenian Alps with multiple MICE opportunities.

The concept is to showcase the destination in a different, experiential and fun way, combined to professional knowledge. Our guests will have the opportunity to see a selection of meeting- and special event venues alongside the main city attractions. Some time will also be reserved for tasting the enticing local cuisine and the surprising Slovenian wines, even in a more “hands on” way. Small tasks and encounters with interesting personages from various backgrounds will spice up the Ljubljana experience.

The programme of the Fam Trip will blend the practical business aspect of site inspections to the venues as well as traditional and local customs and gastronomy of the region. In the stunning and unspoiled setting of Bled, our guests will relish time spent in the fun, creative and authentic programme of the Conventa FAM TRIP 2019 to Bled. Ms. VESNA KLEMENČIČ Convention Bureau Bled

The atmosphere in the factory halls of Savin Sever’s architectural monument (the former Mladinska Knjiga printing house) is created by the high ceilings, contrasts of light, the scale of the exceptional industrial architecture and unexpected features, all powering the idea of a parallel city made from cardboard.

Dveri-Pax is a mid-sized winery producing around 300.000 bottles at 74 ha in north-east Slovenia in Štajerska-Slovenija district just south of Austrian Südsteiermark region. Our focus are mid-priced crisp white varietals of good quality and some premium whites in “Burgundian” style. Furmint is our regional pride and Furmints from our region have been praised by authorities such as Jancis Robinson, Oz Clark and Steven Spurier. Our renovated castle from the 16. Century is a great place for different events.

The company Radgonske gorice d.o.o. is a renowned producer of still and sparkling wines of superior quality. Our sun-exposed vineyards are situated in the region of Slovenske gorice, between the rivers Ščavnica and Mura, where the subalpine and Pannonian climates meet, giving the wine its special quality and freshness. In our wine cellar, we have been filling Zlata radgonska penina made by the classical method or “méthode champenoise” since 1852. We also produce the Srebrna radgonska penina sparkling wine using the tank or charmat method, the Traminer wine “with a black label”as well as other choice wines.

A STRONG INVESTMENT CYCLE MARKS THE BEGINNING OF 2019 IN LJUBLJANA In the next few years the Slovenian capital will see an intensified development of its congres offer, particularly in the hotel sector. Additionally, a brand new Arrivals passenger terminal at the Ljubljana Airport is to be completed by spring 2021. Ljubljana’s growing visibility in the international meeting industry market can be attributed to several factors, including continuous marketing efforts by the key local stakeholders active in international associations bidding procedures, as well as in the corporate events segment. The ongoing expansion and quality imrovement of the city’s tourist offer in a broader sense is another important element enhancing Ljubljana’s destination appeal. Several new hotel openings are planned in the next four years that will bring a range of modern capacities for various types of events. Right across the last »newcomer« - the InterContinental Ljubljana, which opened in September 2017, a new five-star property will start operating by the end of 2021. Two new 4* hotels are to be built in the city centre, another one right next to the main city stadium & arena - Stožice Centre, and another in a business-residential area. This year’s spring will also bring a fully renovated Central Hotel which, from a primarily 4* business property with a privileged downtown location, will transform into a lifestyle hotel with modern urban vibes. The Union Hotels group is currently also investing into the partial refurbishment of the Lev Hotel. A few smaller boutique hotel projects in the city centre are announced, too. Last, but not least, two exisiting hotels – Four Points by Sheraton Mons Ljubljana and the Best Western Premier Hotel Slon, have presented their development plans, which will bring a total of 200 new rooms on the market. From the current capacity of approximately 2,800 rooms, their estimated number should reach 4,000 by 2025. Is there anything else to be said other than that the future seems bright?
