LET’S CELEBRATE: 10 YEARS OF CONVENTA

I cannot believe that Conventa is ten years old. I still remember when I started my job as director of the Slovenian Convention Bureau 12 years ago. I was sitting in my office looking at my marketing budget and racking my brains over how to market my country as efficiently as possible. Attending big tradeshows and organising FAM trips and workshops was not enough for me. I wanted something different, something innovative, something Slovenian. Together with my business partner, Gorazd Čad, we decided to organise the first Slovenian meetings tradeshow. We called it SIMEX. That was back in 2007. The first show gathered 35 exhibitors, all coming from Slovenia, and 40 hosted buyers. As you might imagine, it was nothing particularly special. However, for us it was confirmation that we were on the right track. The next Simex show was much better and the exhibitors and partners were satisfied. But we were not. We realised that in order to achieve real success we needed to look further afield. In 2009 the first Conventa show was born. Conventa united the region of South East Europe under the slogan Explore Meet Create. The first Conventa welcomed 82 exhibitors and hosted 157 buyers. We were satisfied with the inaugural regional meetings show, and that gave us an incentive to move further. Through development, we realised that Conventa is not just a show; it has become an international brand with great value. This motivated us to start communicating the Conventa experience. Through development of the show, we have realised that Conventa unites the region of ‘New’ Europe. Taking a look back, it’s clear that each Conventa experience has made a great impact. We might still be using the same host venues and the same wooden crates as exhibition stands, but the content and hosted buyers are new every year. In the last nine years Conventa has hosted 2,286 meeting planners from 48 countries, and over 30,000 one2one meetings have taken place. These are great numbers for a small show with an even smaller organising team. The 10th Conventa will see some new records that we are all very proud of. As an organiser I am even more proud of the Conventa team and all the partners that have been supporting the Conventa experience since its inception. These are: the Slovenian Tourist Board; Tourism Ljubljana; GR; Union Hotels; Best Western Premier Hotel Slon; Radisson Blu Plaza Ljubljana; Cubo; Jezeršek and Vivo Catering; the Kaval Group; Adria Airways; CD; and, this year, InterContinental Ljubljana. Destinations that host FAM trips prior to and after the show are an important part of the experience and success. Last but not least, Conventa is supported by ICCA, SITE, MPI and many others.

THE 10th ANNIVERSARY OF CONVENTA BOLDLY ONWARDS TOGETHER

Anniversaries are an opportunity for a sober reflection of what we have achieved, where we have got to thus far, and/or whether changes have occurred due to Conventa. My personal thinking is further focused on the fact that Conventa grew from the 2007/2008 financial crisis. Innovations, which are often born from difficult times, can also be the consequences of such tectonic changes. It seems that this is also the case with Conventa, which was a ‘child’ of the crisis, creating an excellent opportunity for testing new ideas and formatting events. The event had to be adapted to the needs of the attendees, taking account of the unfavourable financial climate that prevailed at that time. As organisers, we knew that relying on theory and practice from the past would not bring progress. The result is the unique format of the event, which, from its inception, we defined through the simple 7E model - EXPERIENCE, EMOTION, ENERGY, EDUCATION, ENGAGEMENT, ENTERTAINMENT, EMERGING DESTINATIONS. Ten years later, the model has been proven to be correct, and today this is the central theme for event organisers. The model is used and has been copied by numerous event organisers – which pays honour to us and is very satisfying. The original concept has, however, been refined, resulting in the Conventa Crossover Conference, which dictates trends and provides direction to the region’s event organisers. Over a period of 10 years, a human grows from a newborn to almost a teenager. After a decade of hard work, we are optimistic that a period of even faster growth is still ahead of us. Building and making Conventa a reality was a demanding and tiring project, and no-one can take away from us that challenging and stressful experience. Along the way we met a lot of good people. More than 40 exhibitors put their trust in us from the very start. The support from partners was, and is, invaluable, and foremost amongst them is the visionary mayor of Ljubljana, Zoran Janković. Without his support, the event would not have today’s reach. The dynamic development of Conventa has had many positive and practical consequences. In addition to purely concrete business, it has connected the region, trained numerous young professionals, built ‘New’ Europe as a congress destination, and put it on the congress map. Today, the region is a hot congress destination, and this is central to today’s and future development. What about the future for Conventa? Nothing is guaranteed in advance. As we like to say, Conventa is only good as the successful execution of its last event. We will need to ensure that we maintain its quality through hard work, knowledge, innovation and creativity. Numerous ‘copies’ of our event have stumbled - mainly on these points. We will need more synergy and regional co-operation. If individual regional destinations will only work for themselves, it doesn’t bode well. This is the ultimate goal of the ‘big brothers’ who do not want to see enhanced co-operation in the region.

An explanation for those who are not familiar with the structure of the Conventa Experience. Conventa is a public-private project that began in partnership with the Slovenian Convention Bureau and the company Toleranca Marketing, together with 15 key partners from Ljubljana, Slovenia. Miha Kovačič and Gorazd Čad cannot agree who is the actual ‘mother’ and ‘father’ of Conventa, however, certainly without the third member of the team, Natalija Bah Čad, it would never have come to fruition.

This, therefore, is the first task for the continuing development of Conventa. We believe that we have the will and plenty of energy for the further integration of ‘New’ Europe. We understand the development of events in the direction that we call ‘5.0 events’, and we are aware of the challenges of the digital revolution. In this way we will also strive to ensure that we do not end up on the outskirts of Europe, but rather at the heart of Europe’s new congress revolution. Conventa isn’t just one business event, instead, through the way in which is works it is trying to help the region on its way to breaking through into the competition of its considerably richer and better known neighbours.

Dear Colleagues, It is my desire that you will join our jubilee celebration in great numbers, and you will see for yourselves what Conventa can do for you. See you in Ljubljana from 24-25th January 2018.

10 YEARS OF SUCCESS OF CONVENTA At the end of January the jubilee 10th Conventa Experience will take place in Ljubljana. The jubilee celebration will be marked by a lively programme of events and experiences, and we will also remember some of the key achievements of Conventa. • • • • •

Why has Conventa become the most important event in the region for meeting planners? 1. The first and the biggest specialised event in ‚New‘ Europe

Conventa was the first event of its type in ‚New‘ Europe, and is also the first event that takes places at the start of the year. Many industry experts have added Conventa to their calendars and describe it as the “unmissible event of the year“.

2. A record number of invited guests

From its very beginning the convention hosted 2,286 guests from 48 countries. Event organisers trust Conventa, therefore some of the biggest names in industry are among the exhibitors, such as Renault, Michelin, Citroen, MCI, Kenes, American Express Travel, European Society of Cardiology, Maritz, Marbet, VokDams, Alcatel,....

3. A high percentage of new customers every year

Eighty percent of customers are new to the event every year. Conventa is the only trade show in the world with such a high share. This enables our partners to build their own customer base and work intensively on their own marketing.

4. Exhibitors from 18 countries in the region

The number of countries participating in Conventa has doubled in recent years. In total, 1,192 exhibitors have taken part, among them a very high share (91%) have become permanent partners.

5. Effectiveness of business meetings

In 10 years, exhibitors and invited guests have held 29,150 meetings, which have undoubtedly brought new business links and concrete sales results. On average, exhibitors hold 25 meetings, the quality of which they rate with a high average of 4.59 (out of 5).

6. Conventa has sustainability at its core

Every year Conventa strives to reduce negative effects on the environment and in the organisation of the event takes into consideration various sustainability practices. The event is known for the sustainability of its stands which are constructed every year from more than 3,200 wooden crates. We have received an IBTM award for our sustainable efforts.

7. Conventa broadens horizons

We are very pleased to be able to boast that the majority of educational content at Conventa is free for participants. Last year we began with professional education when, for the first time, we organised the Conventa Crossover Conference on the theme of the future of MICE and tourist marketing.

8. We reward the best

Since its inception, the Meetings Star Award has become known among the circle of event organisers and in the profession as one of the few that is awarded on the basis of established standards and criteria. The awards are conferred by Kongress magazine and Conventa for the best congress destinations, hotels, congress centres and events in New Europe.

9. Conventa uncovers new destinations

Emerging congress destinations in ‘New’ Europe complement Conventa. Stunning nature, rich cultural and historic heritage, excellent transport infrastructure and affordability, numerous new congress centres, hotels, and creativity, are putting ‘New’ Europe among the newest and most desirable congress destinations.

10. Measurable satisfaction

Year-after-year we fulfill our promises to invited guests and exhibitors to the only trade show where both sides are treated equally, and feedback from them testifies to its success. From the results of surveys a high share of exhibitors, 88.9%, confirmed that investing in Conventa pays off. They rated the event with an average score of 4.52. Conventa remains a focal point for organisers of business events in the region of South East Europe. In addition to exchanging knowledge and experience, it also places emphasis on networking and making new business contacts.

CELEBRATING THE 10th ANNIVERSARY OF INNOVATION Conventa is changing the world of events

In the past 10 years, through innovation and a desire for change, Conventa has recorded remarkable achievements, bringing to the region 2,586 event organisers from 48 countries and 1,317 exhibitors from 18 countries. Among them, over 32,000 business meetings have taken place. For over a decade Conventa has been exceeding the boundaries of conventional business events and is regarded as one of the most innovative events in the meetings industry. Below, we have selected ten of the most notable innovations. THE 80/20 MODEL

Conventa is the only show in the world that has pledged that every year a minimum of 80% of the guests invited – event organisers – will be new. By turning this model into concrete numbers, to-date 2,172 new and 414 regular customers have been brought to Conventa. Such a demanding and innovative customer-oriented model is not currently used at any events in the world.

EQUALITY

From the outset Conventa has operated on the basis of the equal treatment of providers and buyers. All social events are open to everyone, since the organisers believe in the transparency of relationships, without the need for privatised events, receptions and agreements that are hidden from the public. Conventa‘s organisers also believe in equal rights among exhibitors, who are able to hire stalls that are equipped for work according to the principle ‚Come, Meet, Win‘.

STALLS FROM WOODEN CRATES

Over the years, stalls made from wooden crates have become a trademark of Conventa. They are produced using exclusively Slovenian wood, thus emphasising the meaning of ‚local‘. In addition to the sustainability of the components, the wooden crates also contribute to a good feeling among attendees and a special homely atmosphere at the event. Conventa received an award for this innovation at the IBTM show in Barcelona in 2013.

SUSTAINABLE ORGANISATION OF THE SHOW

From the very first day, the organisers of Conventa have been motivated and committed to the principles of sustainable development, which contributes to a dynamic balance between man and nature. We developed our own handbook for implementation and addressed areas where the potential for reducing harmful effects is the greatest. In doing so we are following the 4R concept (rethinking, reducing, reusing, and recycling).

THE CONCEPT OF ‚NEW‘ EUROPE

The organisers of Conventa believe in new, different, charming, and as yet undiscovered congress destinations. For this reason, Conventa was the first show on the international market that began promoting countries in southeast, central and eastern Europe, which we classify as ‚New‘ Europe. For us, ‚New‘ Europe is connected with the basic professional values of the congress industry - youth, energy and creativity – such principles are also those of the destinations which are promoted at Conventa.

A HOLISTIC EXPERIENCE

The Conventa approach is a unique formula for the synergy of experiences which we have named ‚The Conventa Experience‘. Over 98% of our partners agree that they attend Conventa due to positive experiences in the past. From the outset, Conventa has been packaged and defined using the 6 Es formula (Experience, Engagement, Education, Emotions, Energy, Entertainment). This places an emphasis on experiencing the event with all the senses, which, these days, has become a world trend among organisers of the most demanding events.

CONVENTA CROSSOVER

The younger brother of Conventa is the Crossover conference. The organisers of Conventa sensed the need for a different, open, and lively format for an educational-experiental event that will be engraved into the memory of the up-and-coming generation of congress organisers. The Conventa Crossover is the first event of its kind that is dedicated to tourism marketing, and which focuses on Europe in the areas of content, social, digital and experiental marketing. The previous two successful Conventa Crossovers had a far-reaching influence in international congress circles.

THE CONVENTA TREND BAR

The congress industry is yearning for a revolution in meetings, otherwise future generations will see today‘s events replaced by virtual reality and even a virtual future. That is why the Conventa organisers introduced an entirely new format of events, where people can meet in a relaxed atmosphere in an area designed as a spacious (and homely) living room. Following such meetings in Sofia, Belgrade, Zagreb and Ljubljana, these innovative, informal, networking events will also continue in 2018.

From its inception, the organisers of Conventa were aware of the need to ensure effective measurement of its results and added value. First of all, I would like to congratulate the organizers for their successful work so far, and I would like to sincerely thank the regular participants and partners of Conventa, the congress service providers and the invited customers. The result of your cooperation so far is reflected in the fact that today Conventa is the central event of business tourism and connects the congressional offer of South East and Central Europe. We are extremely proud of the fact that Ljubljana is a regional hub for business tourism and that many people on Conventa are referred to set an example of good practice. To be able to talk about a top professional event and a case of good practice, figures are also testified. At Conventa, which has been held in Ljubljana for the tenth consecutive year at the end of January, more than 120 service providers will be presented to organize events from 16 countries of South East and Central Europe to customers in Europe and some remote, overseas markets. In ten years, exhibitors and invited guests have concluded over 29,000 meetings, which are the result of successful business cooperation. This event is also an opportunity to prove to the world that we are good hosts in Slovenia and that we are a country of business tourism. Our green, active and healthy tourist destination has diversified tourist offer, short distances between individual tourist attractions, excellent providers of congress tourism services, good accommodation facilities, exceptional cuisine and friendly people. The fact that Slovenia is an interesting tourist destination is also witnessed by numerous recognitions and ranks among the most attractive and sustainable countries. Among them is the title of the first Green country and the prestigious National Geographic World Legacy Destination Leadership Award. With such prizes and awards, Slovenia has entered the global map of attractive, sustainable tourism destinations. Also, the growing tourist popularity of Slovenia is witnessed by data on a tourist visit in 2017, as we record a record tourist year. Slovenia with the population of 2 million was visited by over 4,5 million tourists in 2017, which generated over 11.5 million tourist overnight stays. In the last few years, tourist traffic has increased, especially by foreign tourists, accounting for 72.4% of tourist arrivals and 67.8% of tourist overnight stays. Tourism is an activity that sells experiences and stories, well-being and pleasant memories, which is true for tourists on private and business trips. In every corner of our country, we have a story, a rich natural and cultural heritage, and creative and innovative people. That is why we are confident that we will succeed in realizing the vision that we have set in the Strategy for Sustainable Growth of Slovenian Tourism 2017-2021, so that Slovenia will be recognized as a global green boutique destination for a demanding visitor looking for diverse and active experiences, peace and personal benefits. In this strategy, business tourism is defined as one of the leading products of Slovenian tourism. In 2018, which is the European Year of Cultural Heritage, Slovenia will pay great attention to the development of cultural tourism products and their promotion. Last year Plečnik's year, named after architect Jože Plečnik, this year marks Cankar's year, dedicated to marking the 100th anniversary of the death of one of Slovenia's greatest writers and dramatists. Also, we have the European City of Sports in Slovenia in 2018, since this name bears the city of Maribor. Therefore, there are many reasons to organize a business event in Slovenia this year or visit it privately with family and friends. To all participants of the jubilee, 10th Conventa, I want fruitful work, interesting interlocutors, the conclusion of new business ties and a pleasant feeling in Slovenia.


CELEBRATING THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF CONVENTA IN LJUBLJANA

Allow me to extend my greetings to yet another international crossroads of ideas and initiatives in the meetings industry, and warmly welcome the 10th edition of Conventa! I take great pleasure in the fact that, for a decade, Ljubljana has been the host city of this prime business and knowledge-exchange event, which has gained international recognition by offering a wide range of opportunities to establish relevant business connections. By growing in quality and developing new initiatives from year to year, Conventa has proven that, with all the right ingredients, this tradeshow was made for success. I am certain all the efforts invested by the organisers and partners over this time have contributed to the fact that 2018 is to be a record year for Ljubljana, which is delighted to welcome seven international congresses attracting between 1,000 and 2,000 delegates. Just as the Conventa Show has evolved over the past decade, significant changes have marked Ljubljana, which has undergone a massive transformation, while still retaining its original charm and character. The modernisation of the capital has been focusing above all on sustainable development and the wellbeing of its citizens and visitors alike. Even before we were awarded the highly prominent title of European Green Capital 2016, we have striven to emphasize the importance of creating a fully fledged and environmentally responsible destination, which remains at the heart of our plans for the coming years. It is also important to underline that the vast changes are not only physical ‒ visible in the public space, as they have left an impact also at an emotional level: many local residents now really feel proud of their city, thus becoming even better hosts to our visitors.

Thinking of Conventa, I have a fond memory of last year, when the Municipality of Ljubljana received the Best Event Award 2017 for the project “Point.For. You” ‒ an information point next to the City Hall that was the hub for a full-year, comprehensive programme of activities and events in the framework of Ljubljana – European Green Capital 2016. And keep fingers crossed for us, since we are finalists again for the same award, this time with the EUROCITIES 2017 annual conference which we proudly hosted and organised last autumn. Over 600 delegates from 120 European cities actively shared our good practices on circular economy and learned from other cities’ work and experiences. My heartfelt congratulations go to the organisers and all the partners who have believed in and supported this project, thus contributing to the success of Conventa. I would like to invite all of you, dear Conventa participants, to experience the beauty of our city first-hand and appreciate the harmony between its modern features and the rich cultural-historical heritage. If you have been to Ljubljana before 2007, you will notice the changes that have happened since then; if this is your first time, I encourage you to join in the lively atmosphere of the city centre’s streets and squares, open to pedestrians and cyclists only, have a stop in one of the cafés along the Ljubljanica riverbanks or simply enjoy a stroll in the picturesque Old Town to absorb some of its charming spirit. Welcome to Ljubljana, the most beautiful city in the world!

It is my sincere pleasure to be able to greet you on my behalf and on behalf of the Slovenian Tourist Board as we commemorate the jubilee Conventa Experience hosted by our capital city for the tenth time. On the European map of trade shows, the Conventa Experience has positioned itself in the past decade as an indispensable event for key operators in meetings industry, which is attended by more than 150 international and over 100 regional and Slovenian business partners every year. Close to 1,900 buyers from abroad, more than 1,000 exhibitors, and over 21,000 meetings are among the excellent results of this business event in the past ten years. However, Conventa is much more than just numbers. The Conventa Experience is one of the key business events of Slovenian tourism, which places Slovenia at the very top of professionally implemented events, creates unforgettable and unique experiences, and thus strengthens the image of the country as an excellent host of important business events of the travel and tourism industry. Slovenian tourism boasts a number of excellent business events known for their professional execution and the satisfaction of national and foreign business partners. The Conventa Experience is ranked at the very top of these business events, and this year more than 100 exhibitors from 15 countries will prove that year after year events carried out in a high-quality manner attract the most important meeting planners in business and meetings industry in the region and beyond. Meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions, as products with a high added value and multiplier effects are considered to be key products of Slovenian tourism. It is a fact that the organisers of conventions and business meetings are more and more frequently looking for new destinations, often with accompanying outdoor events in unspoilt nature, where Slovenia can offer unique experiences and tastes of the local environment at a short distance. For example, it will take you just under an hour to reach the coast from Ljubljana, the city that will take your breath away with its liveliness and hospitality, and the Alps and the Pannonian Plain are right at the doorstep. Slovenia is unlike any other country, as it is a crossroads where the amazing diversity of four regions meets. CHEERS TO THE JUBILEE YEAR OF CONVENTA!

My first thought is that time really flies: it seems not so long ago that the first Conventa Show ‒ now an established business event on the European market, took place. And here we are now ‒ just ahead of its 10th jubilee edition! Looking back, it has been an interesting decade full of challenges and successes for Ljubljana, on which also Conventa has left a mark. This show is recognised as one of the major marketing projects that have contributed to the development of the meetings industry in our city, country and wider, which Ljubljana Tourism has been supporting as a long-term partner since the very start. The initial decision of the Organiser to stage it in January was actually a very bold one. It is generally a month when the weather is not expected to help a city shine, and even meeting professionals ‒ whose perception of a new destination might be biased by the lack of sun, are »only humans«. This is why, over the years, Conventa has developed an innovative and personal approach that we can even define as a holistic business experience, which distinguishes it from an increasing number of B2B events in the meetings industry around our continent. It has also helped to focus the attention of potential clients on the emerging South East or New Europe markets, which have seen a visible development during this time. In its own way, Conventa has become the showcase for its meetings industry offer and has helped in positively changing the general perception of this wider region. Ljubljana’s medium-term tourism development strategy till 2020 has firmly set the meetings industry as one of its main product segments, with the Conventa Show being an integral part of its further growth. Our destination has been recording a steady increase in visitor numbers over the last decade as a result of a balanced development and visible transformation of the city that have positively impacted the quality of life and its general attractiveness. Since 2008, the number of visitors and overnights in the capital has doubled, also as a result of a multitude of strategic decisions at the Municipality level that have helped in visibly changing the image and perception of Ljubljana ‒ from an unobtrusive city to a destination placed on many »must-see« bucket lists. The process of transforming Ljubljana into a role-model city in terms of sustainable development has been crowned by the prestigious title of European Green Capital 2016. The title has made a strong impact on strengthening the city brand internationally, which has also been maximised by the tourism industry. Moreover, the award has left a strong legacy among many local residents who have embraced green actions as a way of everyday life. Visitors who have returned to Ljubljana after a few years are struck by the many visible changes which have by no means harmed the city’s authenticity but – on the contrary, improved the quality of its life, thus making it even more attractive to tourists, too. Ljubljana has also been declared UNESCO City of Literature due to its rich cultural heritage and a thriving contemporary literary scene, topped by an array of varied cultural productions and festivals spreading throughout the year. A number of international accolades were bestowed to us also in the tourism sector: Ljubljana won the Tourism for Tomorrow Destination Award for 2015 at the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) global summit. Our city was named three times in a row, from 2015 to 2017, among the Global Top 100 Sustainable Destinations; most recently, Ljubljana won the WTM Responsible Tourism Award in the category of Best for Communications at WTM London 2017. Needless to say, we are proud our efforts have been recognised abroad, which gives us a strong motivation for the coming years. A short look into the future: definitely a smart development of the tourism industry, which is supported by new investments in the hotel sector, the creation of new product development strategies, such as cultural and sports tourism, the creation of new boutique local experiences, the management of tourism flows, the

development of the Central Slovenia region’s tourism offer and, needless to say, a further boost to the meetings industry – hand in hand with the key local and national partners. There is no better time than 2018 – a record year for the congress industry in Ljubljana, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Conventa! Every successful project is also connected to people. Apart from a number of dedicated professionals who have been a part of the Conventa team in the past, two names stand out – the »fathers« or initial creators of the show. Miha Kovačič, director of the Slovenian Convention Bureau, and Gorazd Čad, CEO of Toleranca Marketing – a well deserved applause for your achievements and big cheers for the round anniversary! And, of course, to many more Conventa experiences. Last, but certainly not least, I would love to sincerely thank my esteemed colleague Tatjana Radovič, the heart and soul of the Conventa experience at Ljubljana Convention Bureau, who has warmly welcomed a host of Conventa buyers and participants in the destination over the last decade. ŠIBENIK – A NEW DESTINATION AT CONVENTA! We are honored to announce that Conventa 2018 hosts a new congress destination – Šibenik!

Representatives of Amadria Park, the proud owner of the new Convention Centre Šibenik, and representatives from City of Šibenik, National Park Krka, and Fortress of Culture Šibenik will join our trade show for the first time. Dalmatian town of Šibenik certainly is the new star on the map of congress destinations. In May 2017, this Croatia‘s coastal town got the largest and most modern convention centre in Croatia. The single biggest meeting room in Adriatic can seat up to 1,500 delegates, while in separate events Convention Centre Šibenik can distribute up to 3,000 people in 11 meeting halls covering 6,000m2 conference and exhibition event space in total. In the combination of state-of-the-art multimedia technology and the 1,100 on-site staff that organises and executes the project according to meeting planners‘ wishes, Convention Centre Šibenik undoubtedly brings new era in this region‘s meetings industry. It is the only facility in Croatia built specially for congresses, exhibitions, meetings, banquets and other types of events. To top the congress offer, Amadria Park supports the Convention Centre by five hotels with 1,500 rooms, more than 20 restaurants and bars, and 1,400 parking spaces. Šibenik, the medium-sized town that can be easily accessed from two of the most reliable airports in Croatia - Zadar and Split, presents a perfect congress destination. Firstly, it is in a close proximity to four national and natural parks. Secondly, it is rich with cultural heritage spreading within medieval walls and reneissance buildings, while boasting two UNESCO World Heritage sites. Thirdly, this charming town has been for a millenium protected by four fortresses. Two of them were recently renovated into special venues for hosting various kinds of events. Fourthly, the town offers to congress guests a rich selection of local wines and culinary twists, particularly in Pelegrini, the best Croatian restaurant. And last but not the least, the congress guests can join one of the numerous incentives stretching from the Mediterranean sea beds, through natural parks, historical buildings, all the way up to Croatia‘s highest peak Dinara.

Conventa is celebrating 10th jubilee in the upcoming year. What is Conventa’s message to the MICE industry? Networking, cooperation and connection is important also in times, when the industry was not at its best. We cannot survive without networking and that is what Conventa stands for.

With the award »Conventa Hall of Fame« organisers each year award an individual who has with her or his extraordinary and invaluable effort made her/ his mark and affected the development of the meetings industry. Since 2014, organisers also award the »Ambassador of Conventa« award to the individual who has been a longstanding partner and the greatest ambassador of the trade show. Some of the Conventa Ambassadors and Members of the Conventa Hall of Fame shared with us their thoughts on Conventa.

How do you see the impact of Conventa on the region? Conventa is highly important for the region due to its unique position as the first and only such event in this area. It brings a great opportunity to destinations to present what they offer to the MICE segment. It also brings awareness of meaning and importance of the MICE segment in the region among wider circles and it generates the development of MICE in the region. If Conventa were a dish, what would it be and why? Coffee, since everyone likes it, it stimulates us, makes us alert, enables us to think clearly and brings sparkling ideas. It gives us energy and power to do our job and exceed expectations. While drinking coffee we meet, create new business opportunities and make new friends. A cup of coffee as a symbol of Conventa’s visual identity did not come by chance.

a former Managing Director of Ljubljana Tourism What does Conventa mean to you? The meaning of Conventa nowadays has changed, since I am not actively part of this business anymore. I am proud that I was a part of Conventa’s first steps and it brings me many happy memories. Conventa celebrating already 10th anniversary is a validation of a great project that managed to grow in space and time. Can you share a memorable experience from Conventa that is hard to forget? I remember searching for a motive that would represent content and vision of Conventa on a symbolic level. Working group that I was a part of accepted my suggestion that we use a nice cup with a colorful image of Ljubljana in the background. I am still very proud of that.

Former Managing Director of Union Hotels What does Conventa mean to you? Above all, Conventa represents an extraordinary story of success that has deeply anchored MICE segment of tourism in the Central and South-Eastern European Region. The beginnings were far from easy, as at that time, the hotel industry as well as local and state institutions practically had no understanding of the Conventa’s potential and its importance. In addition, the PCOs were very sceptical. Today the situation is very different. Conventa gained the trust of both providers and consumers. I am glad I have been supportive of this initiative even in the most difficult times and I am proud of being a co-creator of this success story from the very beginning.

Can you share a memorable experience from Conventa that is hard to forget? The number of impressive experiences is so large that it is not easy to single out a specific one. The initial period was very demanding and gatherings of business partners and friends were not only professionally productive but also emotionally rewarding. It would not have been possible to go through those challenging times without an emotional charge. From this perspective, I still carry the strong impressions from the times when we had to give it all and go well beyond the call of duty to ensure the survival of the Slovenian Convention Bureau and of Conventa at the same time. Conventa is celebrating 10th jubilee in the upcoming year. What is Conventa’s message to the MICE industry? Conventa’s main message from the very start is: the success and satisfaction of all partners in a wide spectrum of business activities is possible, when the high level of professionalism is blended with a warmth of an old-time hospitality. How do you see the impact of Conventa on the region? Conventa has completely changed the perspective and viewpoint from which the importance of MICE industry is now being assessed. In this context, the MICE events are now seen as important not only from economic and financial perspectives but also from social and anthropological point of view, as they contribute to overcoming the individual social isolation and facilitate building of greater social harmony. In addition to facilitating diverse gatherings, MICE events are very conducive to a real encounters. Not many economic activities have this social integration dimension so clearly accentuated. If Conventa were a dish, what would it be and why? Hmmm, a very tricky question. I think it would be something light, soft, tender with a very full flavour, a desert perhaps. Yes, a desert indeed, at the end of a good, festive lunch celebrating the tenth birthday. Happy birthday Conventa and many happy returns!

What does Conventa mean to you? Conventa is a small, but a rather dynamic show. It is a place where you can meet industry colleagues from the region, as well as many interesting event organisers. You can also enjoy Slovenian specialties and a diverse event programme.

What does Conventa mean to you? You really have to experience Conventa to truly understand what this trade show really represents to South East Europe Meeting Industry. Two days filled with new experiences, new contacts, creative ideas, friendly atmosphere and above all perfect organization.

What does Conventa mean to you? Conventa is a quality trade show of the MICE industry, especially important for the countries of Central and South-East Europe.

Can you share a memorable experience from Conventa that is hard to forget? There are so many. The 2nd meeting of the Strategic Alliance of the National Convention Bureaux of Europe was held during a Conventa. The members of this Alliance are national convention bureaus and since then two meetings annually are organized, bringing together people who are extremely dedicated to their work and are doing their best to strengthen the cooperation between convention bureaus and to solve joint problems collaboratively. On the other hand, during the last Conventa, I won the Conventa Hall of Fame Award, which is a big honour.

Can you share a memorable experience from Conventa that is hard to forget? Definitely, ‘Conventa Hall of Fame’ for outstanding and invaluable service to the meeting industry of South East Europe. This award was a beautiful surprise and the biggest professional and personal recognition.

Conventa is celebrating 10th jubilee in the upcoming year. What is Conventa’s message to the MICE industry? My message to the MICE industry in the region is that we have to continue to work together, support each other and help grow the unique image of this region. How do you see the impact of Conventa on the region? I am glad that such a meeting place for the industry members from our region exists. I am even more pleased that event organisers who are already interested in our region attend Conventa regularly. Conventa already has its place as one of the mandatory events in the MICE event calendar. On the other hand, Conventa needs to continue to raise awareness about MICE tourism among the representatives of regional economies. If Conventa were a dish, what would it be and why? A good, well-balanced broth. A mixture of many different, but tasty ingredients.

How do you see the impact of Conventa on the region? Conventa is growing stronger every year in the field of B2B meetings between providers and buyers of business events thanks to amazing organization, quality content and innovation. Conventa’s impact reflects in a commitment to connect the meetings industry of the region with Europe. It provides a high quality platform of networking and creating business relations in a very natural way, which is more than enough for the first 10 years, don’t you agree? If Conventa were a dish, what would it be and why? A Balkan fusion - Conventa, a place where all the essences of Balkan countries and people represent in unique ways.

Can you share a memorable experience from Conventa that is hard to forget? There were plenty of such moments, from planning Conventa to the successful realization of the project. But the most important of all are people, my dear friends and excellent professionals - the organizers of Conventa, Miha Kovačič, Gorazd Čad and Tatjana Radovič. I will never forget a moment when I received the Hall of fame award when it was first established. Conventa is celebrating 10th jubilee in the upcoming year. What is Conventa’s message to the MICE industry? The ten-year jubilee is the best confirmation of Conventa’s success. In my long-term managerial career, I witnessed many attempts to organize MICE trade shows around the world, but only a small number of them managed to survive. Conventa’s message is primarily to offer quality rather than quantity: a smaller number of quality buyers is always a better choice. How do you see the impact of Conventa on the region? Conventa has positioned itself as an important trade show for the area of Central and South-East Europe with a regular place in MICE events calendar. The establishment of Slovenian Convention Bureau and launch of Kongres magazine was an important pre-condition for the successful organization of Conventa. I am proud that I could provide a friendly assistance as a previous director of Croatian Convention and Incentive Bureau. I see CONVENTA as a child that has successfully grown, especially with awareness that in 2014 Croatian Convention and Incentive Bureau as up to that time well known brand of Croatian and European MICE industry was unfortunately closed due to irresponsible decision. I am hoping for a better future and return of the Croatian Convention and Incentive Bureau. I strongly believe that it

will have a positive impact on the future of MICE and development of Conventa and Kongres magazine due to several exhibitors coming from Croatia. If Conventa were a dish, what would it be and why? If the EIBTM in Barcelona is a starter and IMEX in Frankfurt is the main dish, Conventa is a great dessert.

I am eagerly looking forward to 2018 as due to overlapping client projects I haven’t been able to attend for a while – it’s been too long. Conventa brings time to get acquainted with new things that are available and check how the old ones improved. Can you share a memorable experience from Conventa that is hard to forget? My memory comes from the first Conventa I participated at. For the most of the time I was surrounded by beautiful local ladies (many of them are in the region) and judging by the grin on one of my key DMC partners face he had to do something with it. How do you see the impact of Conventa on the region? Ten years ago, South-East Europe was unknown as MICE destination and even seasoned industry professionals had wrong impressions of area’s potential. Conventa has played an important role in providing a forum where the region can showcase all of its best offerings to the buyers in one place. It is really important that the buyers have had a hands-on experience with the region to feel why is it so special. For exhibitors Conventa has opened new ways for creating contacts that would otherwise take a lot of time and effort. If Conventa were a dish, what would it be and why? Fresh octopus salad enjoyed with a group of good

friends. Every time I go to the Adriatic coastline or islands this is the first dish I eat. Fresh, local catch accompanied with wild herbs grown in sunshine and olive oil handcrafted by a family – all this coupled with a locally produced white wine. Instead of playing with Michelin stars and posh setup Adriatic coastline brings us an authentic experience. That’s what Conventa is good at.

Conventa is a memorable experience on its own and this is how creating memories seems to become a reality here, every year! Answering to the question, yes, it is hard for me to forget the SHOW and PARTY time of Conventa. Quality and Joy, in almost everything: great musicians, live bands, dancing, choreographies, paintings are only a few to name and many more to remember for a life time. Professionals in MICE industry have a very good example, in terms of innovation, inspiration, planning and organization of Events, Meetings, Conferences, Exhibitions. 10 years ago Conventa planted a seed and proved the meaning of continuous transformation in MICE industry. I wish to Conventa many happy returns, as it really deserves this kind of recognition as a high level MICE Event.

How do you see the impact of Conventa on the region? Unknown destinations are transformed to well known and attractive ones. Absolutely a successful and potential outcome. MY MAIN GOAL IS TO SUPPORT THE NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERS IN THE REGION Meet Conventa Ambassador Sarah Skavron, Knowledge and Events Executive, IMEX Group Conventa organising committee has chosen Sarah Skavron as the Conventa Ambassador 2018. Sarah Skavron, as part of the Knowledge and Events Team at IMEX Group, works with several projects including coordinating the educational sessions at the IMEX-MPI-MCI Future Leaders Forum. IMEX-MPIMCI Future Leaders Forum under her organisation and leadership has been an essential part of Conventa for several years. In the last five years, thanks to Sarah Skavron, Conventa educated several hundred students and young professionals from Slovenia and region about the meetings industry. Q: This is your 5th participation at Conventa. What does Conventa mean to you? For me, Conventa means innovative approaches and changing perspective in a friendly environment. The event is a great way to start the year – enabling me to experience fresh and smart ideas, catch up with industry colleagues and foster new connections. Q: Can you share a memorable experience from Conventa that is hard to forget? I have many wonderful memories from Conventa - it‘s an event with special significance to me as it‘s where I had my debut as a moderator for the Future Leaders Forum at Conventa. The IMEX- MPI-MCI Future Leaders Forum is held around the world to give students a valuable insight into our industry and make connections. The Forum is very personal for me and has played a big part in my career so far - I took part in it myself as a student and about a year later returned as an organiser and moderator. The Future Leaders Forum held at Conventa is designed to inspire and engage meeting and event students from South-East Europe to become part of our industry and return to Conventa as industry professionals in the future. Over 150 Forums have been held around the globe since the launch in 2003 supporting and benefiting over 8,000 students. Each Forum leaves me with so much energy and happiness – meeting the next generation of planners and helping them to discover new opportunities. Q: Conventa is celebrating 10th jubilee this year. What is Conventa‘s message to the MICE? Power to the meetings! For the past decade Conventa has been at the forefront in connecting people and offering new ideas in a fresh and impactful way. Q: What does the title Conventa Ambassador mean to you? I feel very honoured that the Conventa team has selected me and it‘s a wonderful recognition of the accomplishments that we have achieved together through our great collaboration and hard work. Personally, the title is a promise to myself to follow the Conventa spirit of innovation and progressive thinking. Q: What is the main thing you hope to accomplish as the Conventa ambassador? My main goal is to support the next generation of leaders in the region – through the Future Leaders Forum I have met so many bright, ambitious and kind young professionals and I will continue to support, encourage and motivate them in their career development. This involves, for example, spreading the word about great initiatives in the region and connecting them with inspirational individuals. Q: You have been in the meetings industry for quite some time. What inspires you? In short, it‘s the people. In my role I‘m privileged to meet the next generation of meeting planners and help them take the first steps in what is an exciting, fast-paced and ever-evolving sector. I‘m inspired by the passionate people from around the world who make up our industry and the powerful impact that meetings create.

Q: What is your prediction for the future of meetings? As part of my work with Future Leaders Forum, I‘m able to discover the ambitions, challenges and attituides of the next generation of meeting and event planners. Many of them share a desire to create a legacy, both personally and professionally. They‘re highly connected to the communities in which they live, work and do business and they‘re are keen to leave a positive and long-lasting impact. MEETINGS STAR AWARDS „Meetings Star awards are tailor-made for meeting planners“ GORAZD ČAD, Editor in Chief of Kongres Magazine and Co-founder of Conventa

In 2018, the Meetings Star awards, together with Conventa, is celebrating its 10th anniversary. During this time it has gained a special status, and the awarding of prizes at Conventa has become a traditional event. This year it will be raised to an even higher level with an independent event in Grand hotel Union, Ljubljana. More important than the competition, however, is the starting point from where, through the announcing and awarding of the best, we are contributing to ensuring high quality products and services. Meeting planners also have the same expectations. We are pleased that numerous organisers have confirmed to us that the recipients of plaques are at the top in their field and, therefore, the awards are an actual reflection of the situation in the market. In the future we will further extend our evaluations to new destinations and providers. The top ten in the various categories will receive special plaques at the awards at the Grand Hotel Union on 24 January 2018. All the best-rated hotels and venues, together with a detailed description of the methodology used, are presented below. For the year 2017 we chose the best in three umbrella categories:

A. THE BEST MEETING DESTINATIONS 2017

Congress travelogues or Meetologies have become a firm reference point for event organisers in deciding and choosing destinations. This particularly results from the logic and benefits that they bring to participants. On the initiative of individual destinations that are part of the MTLG project, we have prepared a new categorisation of destinations. The objective of the upgrade categorisation is to provide meeting planners with as much information as possible about the capacities of destinations, which, since 2009, we have been evaluating using the Meetologue methodology. All destinations have been evaluated on the basis of field trips and research, in order to get as close as possible to the real situation.

The new categorisation includes a combination of criteria, with a points sum of indices that is the basis for classifying destinations in four destination classes. MEETING DESTINATIONS XL Destinations that can host over 2,000 congress participants The first category features the largest European meeting destinations which have exceptionally developed congress infrastructure and excellent aviation links. These destinations are mainly important aviation hubs.

Destinations in ‚New‘ Europe compare with the most developed European destinations. Among them, according to our evalutions, Vienna is in first place with a score of 4.77. We also compare and reward destinations in ‚New‘ Europe. The ratings ladder of the best is:

In 2016 it hosted over 90,000 congress participants, andin 2017 its results will be even better. For the 2017 award we evaluated 25 new hotels and re-evaluated 12 hotels from last year. In total 151 evalutions by hidden guests were carried out, which enables a true high-quality comparison. We deliberately avoid the possibility that part of the evaluation is made-up of online surveys. We believe that, by using such a method, the information obtained would only reflect the opinion of those users who choose to participate. Therefore, we will continue to use the hidden guest methodology, which, in our opinion, ensures the best quality results, despite the fact that this method is time-consuming and demanding.

How did you get into the meetings industry? Fifteen years ago, when I was working for the largest tour operator in the country, the M&IT department head invited me to join the team and I have not left the industry since then, despite a few years after that changing to the convention hotel and eight years ago to the national convention bureau. It’s a challenging but rewarding experience contributing to the development of the industry.

How did you get into the meetings industry? I was first inspired by the meetings industry at Cankarjev dom, where I worked as a student. At that time it was virtually the only convention centre and PCO in Slovenia, which gave me a lot of knowledge and connections, and it was a long time infection that still lasts to this day. In the interim, I also tried my hand as a hotelier, but my passion for the meetings industry and organisation led me to start my own company which, in addition to other projects, we are co-creating Conventa.

What is the most positive thing about Conventa? It is difficult, or almost impossible, to name the most positive one, as there are so many and they are all connected to each other. Conventa is also a development project, so things are changing every year. One of them is definitely positioning Slovenia and South East Europe on the international meetings map. The next one could be uniting the meetings industry of the region and developing its product and its potential, but also demonstrating its value and contribution to national economies. Career high? I am in the middle of my professional career. The first half has been great, so I am looking forward for the second half. Now, let’s get a bit more personal... Three words that describe you best? Work-hard, play-hard, being-me. If you weren’t working in the meetings industry, what other profession would you be doing? Global top innovative blue chip corporation. What is the most positive thing about Conventa? It is definitely the special energy that we have managed to create at the event and for which much larger congress organisers envy us. The energy is the result of Conventa being prepared by highly experienced organisers who try to understand the buyers’ needs as well as those of exhibitors. At the same time the whole event is conceived as a boutique experience. Career high? In my long career there have been a lot of events that could be described as peaks, depending on the period. Of the congresses, the highlight was definitely the largest congress in Slovenia’s history, the Apimondia Congress, which was organised in 2003 in Cankarjev dom. Today, the greatest challenge and at the same time greatest satisfaction is managing my own firm, and I am especially excited by changes in the field of content marketing that we are trying to promote through the production of the Kongres magazine. Now, let’s get a bit more personal... Three words that describe you best? Rock’n’roll. If you weren’t working in the meetings industry, what other profession would you be doing? As a geographer by heart, I would probably travel around the world and write travelogues about the most unusual places I visited.

If you could fly off to any destination in the world, which one would it be? I would travel the length and breadth of Russia and explore the endless expanse of Siberia. What always makes you smile? The morning walks with my flat-coated retriever, whose name is Bodo.

How did you get into the meetings industry? During my study at the Faculty of Arts I was working as a hostess at Cankarjev dom, the Congress and Cultural Centre in Ljubljana. At that time I first had the chance to get in contact with congress participants, which was a very interesting experience. When there was an opportunity to start working in the PCO department, I knew that it was what I wanted to do. And I stayed there for 10 years…

How did you get into the meetings industry? Actually, it was by sweet coincidence. After last year’s Future Leaders Forum, where I got excited about the MICE industry, I was looking for a job in this field. One year later I met Natalija and Gorazd at Conventa Crossover, and the rest is history.

How did you get into the meetings industry? By chance, looking for a job in a gorgeous city like Prague, where I started working for Marcus Evans.

What is the most positive thing about Conventa? I have been involved in the organisation of the biggest congresses held in Ljubljana with very complex logistics, but Conventa is special. How did you get into the meetings industry? Everything in my life happens by a real coincidence. Whilst a student I ran into a job in the tourism industry, and as the meetings industry represents a great branch of tourism it was a logical step to continue with it. For me, anything related to working with amazing people is always the right place to be at – so, right now, the only place is to be is at Conventa.

How did you get into the meetings industry? During my previous work I was covering the logistic support for Conventa which introduced me to the meetings industry. At that time, I had a chance to get in contact with Miha, Gorazd and Natalija and this year we decided to share together the 10th Conventa Experience.

I would pick a flight ticket for a round the world trip – planet hopping sounds like a great experience. What always makes you smile? Introducing an exceptional congress year for Ljubljana is the jubilee 10th Conventa 2018!

Following the year 2016 during which it held the prestigious title of European Green Capital, Ljubljana continued on a very successful path also in 2017. Besides a strong commitment to sustainable practices embedded into the city’s urban development, the ongoing efforts of local stakeholders have been paying off also in meetings & events - 2018 will be stellar for Ljubljana in terms of number and size of the congress events held throughout the year. There are 16 congresses confirmed so far with over 500 delegates, among which 6 will attract more than 1,000 participants. A particularly active year is ahead of the two biggest convention centres in the city, Cankarjev dom – CD Congress Centre and GR – Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre. Together they will host over 35 international congresses, with two expecting over 2,000 attendees. Very confident projections come also from the hotel and agency business sectors regarding the growth in the number of corporate events that have been confirmed for the destination, taking place in different convention hotels and special venues. Important to point out is that these remarkable successes couldn’t have been accomplished without a continuing marketing support from key local actors involved in bidding for large international congresses and the active engagement from various partners working harmoniously toward a common goal - to increase the visibility of Ljubljana and Slovenia as a congress destination. Furthermore, groundbreaking achievements and important roles of Slovenian experts in international associations, the steady development of congress products, growing investments made in the hotel industry (2017 marked the opening of InterContinental Ljubljana, the first 5* hotel in the city), and an increasingly attractive tourist offer played an equally important part. Last but not least, the positive attitude, genuine energy and much-needed passion are vital elements of any kind of achievement and luckily enough, something Ljubljana (and everyone working in the Slovenian tourism industry) has never struggled with.

Above all they are a clear proof that sustainability is a deeply-rooted value that the locals have embraced in their everyday life. The course of tourism development in Ljubljana has shown that big achievements in the recent years haven’t been an overnight success but a carefully planned process. Renovation of Bled Congress Centre The Bled Congress Centre, previously known as the Festival Hall, was built in 1961. It was constructed as a replacement for the former Zdraviliški dom (Spa House) in the nearby park, which had been at the heart of the cultural and social life of the town and a popular event venue in Bled - already a well-known tourist destination. The hall began to attract high-profile events in the first years of its operation. In 1961 it hosted a world-class chess tournament that brought together the world’s top chess grandmasters such as Fischer, Talj, Gligorić, Portisch and Najdorf. In the years to come the hall opened its doors to a number of major music events, including the Slovenian Pop Song Festival, the Yugoslavian Jazz Festival, the Alpine Night Oberkreiner Music Festival, and staged numerous performances by former top Yugoslavian folk dance groups. However, to cater the rapidly growing business tourism sector, the building soon became a candidate for renovation. In 1989 the festival hall underwent considerable renovation to meet the needs of the 3rd World Rowing Masters Regatta. With its additions and refurbishments, the hall was now able to compete with the most modern congress centres in Ljubljana and Portorož. A designated cultural monument, the hall has preserved its original form until today. Two decades later, continued expansion of congress tourism and greater demands from concert musicians and other performers called for further changes, which the centre’s new managing authority, the Bled Culture Institute (Zavod za kulturo Bled), began to implement in 2008. The 2008 renovation included the large hall, whilst in 2011 most of the stage equipment, toilets and service areas were upgraded. Since December 2017 fully-refurbished facilities in the lakeside part of the building have been available for use. The hall can now be used as a whole or partitioned into two or three smaller units; lighting and HVAC systems as well as most of the equipment have also been modernised. The service areas have undergone a complete makeover and now provide better working conditions for technicians and interpreters. The hall has been fitted with new mechanical installations and heating system, and reroofed. With all these improvements, the Bled Congress Centre, situated in one of Bled’s most prestigious locations in a park just off the lakeshore, now offers a competitive range of facilities suitable for all types of top-level corporate, cultural and entertainment events.
