Welcome to Šibenik

Šibenik, a medieval Dalmatian city first mentioned in 1066, is surrounded by idyllic nature (national parks) and historical spots that astonish and inspire any business guest. The former industrial, military and port city has been experiencing a boom in the meetings industry that, through planning development, has been changing and significantly enriching the range of services and attractions. The medieval coastal town of Šibenik is not only known for welcoming the Game of Thrones staff, but also for having the largest conferencing facilities on the Adriatic, including the single biggest meeting room. Moreover, if its a number of separate events rather than a single one that is required, then you can distribute up to 3,000 people in 11 meeting halls in total. How might you do that? - you may well ask. Well, you do it in three steps: Firstly, let your delegates be seated throughout the 4,000m2 conference and exhibition event space. Secondly, lavish them with state-of-the-art multimedia technology. And thirdly, instruct the 1,100 on-site staff that organises and executes the project according to your wishes, but most importantly according to the high expectations of your assembled delegates. Šibenik’s residents are renowned for some kinf od a »wicked« humour and teasing, but this friendly teasing comes as part of the local culture and tradition. Moreover, their motto is »there is always time for a a great laugh«. Jokes are a part of Šibenik’s joie de vivre that any visitor can easily embrace with a full heart.

Living History Šibenik lifestyle in the midst of UNESCO heritage

For a long-time hidden in the shadow of its famous brothers like Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik, Šibenik is finally gaining in recognition and importance as a tourist and congress destination of its own standing. However, this does not mean that it has become over-crowded by the tourist masses comparable to those of other Dalmatian towns. Even though Šibenik has also hosted the filming staff of Game of Thrones, it remains reluctant to employ this as a promotional advantage, as it wants to keep a managable flow of tourists in order to maintain the town as pleasant for both the locals and the visitors. This has been successful, as its coastline gives you the chance to enjoy the beach and all of its offerings with an enjoyable level of privacy. Šibenik days pass peacefully in the shade of two UNESCO World Heritage buildings: the 15th Century St. Jacob’s Cathedral and the 16th Century St. Nicholas fortress. Take the chance to sit in your own cafeteria with internationally awarded baristas, or let your new “nono” grill you a fish. The important thing here is to just be yourself; it’s all about the connection between people and history. Laugh out loud, but try to avoid saying “LOL”; say “Oh my God” rather than “OMG”; get yourself out there as soon as possible but drop all the “ASAP”. Breath it all in. Just be. It’s what Šibenik is all about: being, coexisting, and feeling the eternal in its stone.

Natural attractions A green-blue Zen moment within delegates’ grasp

The City of Šibenik is connected to the karst Krka river, which is famous for its majestic waterfalls, canyons, radiant flora and fauna and beautiful lake with an island in the estuary flowing into the sea, around which the entire city was developed. Because of the natural beauty, a major part of the area around the Krka river is declared a national park, of which the geographical centre is Šibenik. This gives the whole area an outstanding experiential value and also numerous opportunities in the field of congress tourism. The Krka river starts its journey from the town of Knin, where through a series of waterfalls it meanders to the grand canyon and Lake Visovac. If the neighbouring cities of Zadar and Split are said to be close to some of Croatia’s national parks, then Šibenik is located right in the heart of the Kornati and Krka National Parks. The city is in the midst of the idyllic Dalmatian towns of Pirovac, Vodice and Primošten, which form the core of the Dalmatian region. Primošten was created on a picturesque island and is today mainly a resort town; Vodice is a centre of entertainment and also has an increasingly quality range of congress facilities; and in addition to the Kornati, the Šibenik archipelago, the most dynamic and diverse group of islands in the Adriatic, is a paradise for nautical incentive aficionados. The fairly wild islands of Kaprije, Krapanj, Prvič, Zlarin and Žirje are part of the most indented stretch of the Adriatic coast, which for lovers of sailing is known to be an outstanding area. Just an hour’s drive from Šibenik is the Paklenica National Park, where one can hike through flood-swept gorges and feed one’s longing for nature through slow walks on various trails. The park has a spectacular 175-metre long cave, or one can climb Paklenica’s walls that are close to the water. And last but not the least, a two-hour drive from Šibenik leads to the UNESCO world heritage Plitvice National Park where visitors can explore the faded edges between its water and wood and marvel at its deeply rich and entangled dance of green and blue hues.

Rich incentive programmes The Šibenik area offers it all – from its sea beds to its peaks

The hippest foodie town in Dalmatia From traditional konobas to Michelin-starred restaurant

The deepest points around Šibenik can be found on its Mediterranean sea beds. Therefore, there are numerous water-based incentive programmes available - diving, snorkelling, recreational kayaking, canoeing, rafting, sailing and wind-surfing. There are spectacular trips to 46 different diving locations, as well as one educational snorkelling trail, where one can submerge to the depths to swim with stunning sea creatures and sea plants. Several hidden sea caves are also definitely something to look forward to, including one that can be accessed either by swimming through a submerged sea channel or by a rope descent, it is home to a mysterious but harmless ‘sea bear’. Another cave even has a 13th century church! There are also plenty of incentive programmes that can be done on the mainland. Activities can combine sightseeing tours of the historical UNESCO heritage, wandering around the ancient city and a walk on a 4.4km trail leading to the 16th century St.Nicholas’ Fortress. One can even join in Klapa singing lessons, build a dry stone wall, join culinary incentives, such as the Marenda experience and cooking lessons at Amadria Park, go on a photo tour of Šibenik with a professional photographer, and the Marendin (brunch) at the 16th century Barone Fortress, to name just a few.

If they aren’t entirely what a meeting is all about, then at the very least gastronomical pleasures undeniably add to one’s experience of a town. This particularly applies to Šibenik, where one can experience the intersection of medieval surroundings with gourmet pinnacles. With its central position on the Dalmatian coast, Šibenik offers a rich selection of local wines and culinary twists. Its restaurants and »konobas« go a step above the usual regional plates; alongside reinvented seafood such as octopus goulash, cuttlefish gnocchi, truffle pappardelle, shark and stuffed squid, one can also find delicious burgers and Semifreddo desserts. However, guests preferring traditional Dalmatian cuisine will be satisfied too, as Šibenik is renowned for having some of the best restaurants not just on the Dalmatian coast, but in the whole of Croatia. The young and the young at heart will find their perfect spot for satisfying their soul in the variety of foods and wines on offer, either in a local small konoba Marenda serving traditional food, or in Pelegrini, Michelin starred restaurant. Topping it all off this with beautiful interiors or outdoor terraces with views of medieval walls and crystal clear seas, one will certainly be convinced that this is without doubt the hippest Dalmatian town.

The mainland also features natural parks with paths for hiking, trekking, cycling, running and mountain biking. For those who enjoy free climbing or mountaineering, Šibenik’s peaks along the Dinara – Croatia’s highest peak – offer enchanting viewpoints over the town and its gleaming bay.

Special Venues dating back to the Middle Ages

Šibenik offers meeting venues spanning from medieval to industrial times During the 90s war Šibenik lost most of its industry, so as a consequence some of the buildings are still standing empty and looking rather forlorn. However, most of the buildings aren’t derelict, but rather buildings either hosting new successful industries and undergoing present or with planned future renovation to become modern venues for hosting events. They also add a particular charm to the city’s landscape that stretches from the industrial suburbs all the way to its one thousand-year-old downtown area. In its historical buildings Šibenik offers special venues, such as the recently renovated fortresses: Barone Fortress from the 16h Century, and the St.Michael’s Fortress dating back to 11th Century that nests a venue for 1077 guests with a view over Šibenik town and the Dalmatian sea.

Calm and quiet waters The Šibenik seawaters – one own spot of water delight

Who hasn’t heard of Dalmatia? Probably everyone has. For this reason the Dalmatian shoreline can often feel overcrowded. Yet there is an almost undiscovered pearl waiting to be found, hidden at the sea’s end and surrounded by islands and a fortress. We are talking, of course, about Šibenik, and its coastline that gives to a conference delegate the chance to enjoy the beach and all of its offerings with an enjoyable level of privacy. It is possible to take a stroll along the shore, or dip one’s toes to awaken the curious little fish, or snorkle oneself to exhaustion... This is an undeniably special opportunity to be in Dalmatia, and in the part where crowds don’t squeeze the visitor out.

Interesting facts about Šibenik Šibenik is the only indigenous Croatian city on the Adriatic coast. While other cities started their existence as villages of old Illyrians, Greek colonies or Roman urban agglomeration, the existence of Šibenik is linked to the arrival of Croats in the Adriatic area at some point in the 9th or 10th century. The City of Šibenik was first mentioned in 1066, and King Peter Krešimir IV, called ‘the Great’, is credited as the founder of Šibenik, thus the city is also called Krešimir’s City (Krešimirov grad). Skradin risotto (Skradinski rižot) is a special local dish that even astounded the famous American chef and television personality Anthony Bourdain. The vegetable stock used to make Skradin risotto needs to be cooked for an incredible 20 hours, while the meat is cooked for at least 6-7 hours. When the Irish writer and Nobel laureate George Bernard Shaw visited the Kornati Archipelago in 1929, he was so struck by the view of the islands that he wrote: ‘On the last day of the Creation, God desired to crown his work and thus created the Kornati islands out of tears, stars and breath.’ Since 2012 Klapa multipart singing, an ancient tradition of the Southern Croatian regions of Dalmatia, has been inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Klapa singing dates back to the late medieval era, to the time of ancient Dalmatian brotherhoods. With the help of European funds, the City of Šibenik has renovated two of its four fortresses – St.Michael’s (Sv. Mihovil) and Baron’s (Barone/Šubičevac), while renovation of the third fortress - St.John (Sv.Ivan) - has also been confirmed. The rise of tourism is an apt complement to the development of the city which has an ambition to become a pleasant destination where young people and families can live. With this aim, Šibenik is investing in the development of higher education, and developing study programmes that do not exist in Croatia; for example, the study of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Sources. The City of Šibenik is planning to develop Šibenik’s speciality, namely, the realisation of the ‘Šibenik Escalator’ project which will connect the city’s Dolac quarter with St.Michael’s Fortress. The Šibenik Convention Centre is the only facility in Croatia built especially for congresses, exhibitions, banquets and other type of events.

It’s all about location Šibenik’s location in the heart of Dalmatia where the river Krka flows into the Adriatic Sea is perfect and favourable for congress tourism. Access via the Zagreb-Split motorway is simple. Nearby there are two frequently served airports, Split and Zadar, which offer international flights with bigger and smaller carriers to numerous European cities – the majority of which are only up to 90 minutes away. The fact that the city is located in the triangle of three extraordinary national parks – Kornati, Krka, Paklenica – and close to the Plitvice Lakes and Northern Velebit makes it particularly attractive.

Šibenik faces In the 15th and 16th centuries, Šibenik was one of Croatia’s most important humanistic and renaissance centres. Scientists, writers, composers, historians, painters, graphic artists, as well as a number of sculptors and builders lived in the city. For example, Juraj Matvejev Dalmatinac, one of the greatest renaissance craftsmen with regard to the older art of shaping human figures; Juraj Šižgorić who, in 1477, was the first Croatian author to publish a book which is nowadays considered to be one of the most beautiful Croatian works of literature; Antun Vrančić, a humanist who became a counsellor to the kings and an important writer of poems and travel books; Faust Vrančić, the writer of the first Croatian dictionary, as well as author of the famous book of projects and inventions - Machinae novae (New Devices), and who printed the first picture of a parachute flight in history; and Ivan Marko Lukačić, the composer whose motets were famous throughout Europe. However, the Renaissance was not the only period when Šibenik was home to big names in history. In fact, throughout history, the city has been home to many acknowledged and internationally-renowned people. In the 19th Century, VIsiani Robert, a well known natural science and botanical professor, established the first botanical garden in Europe. Nikola Tommaseo was one of the most powerful and notable Europeans of the 19th century – his writing opus is very extensive, consisting of over 200 works. In 1895 Ante Šupuk, a Croatian inventor, created the first hydroelectric power plant in the world on the Krka River, thus Šibenik became the third city in the world to have public lighting using alternating current. The Šibenik of modern times is not lacking in prominent names either. Among them, singers of the 20th century, such as Vice Vukov, Arsen Dedić and Mišo Kovač - some of the most popular and best-selling singers of the former Yugoslavia. And 20th and 21st century European and world famous athletes including the basketball players Dražen Petrović and Danira Nakić, basketball coach Neven Spahija, water polo player Perica Bukić, water polo coach Ivica Tucak, the European and world champion kickboxer, Nives Radić, and current NBA basketball player Dario Šarić, to name a few. It is necessary to also mention Maksim Mrvica, the world-renowned genius piano player, who still impresses audiences with his classical crossover performances. And last, but not least, Rudolf Štefan, a chef who was named Croatia’s ‘Chef of the Year’ for three consecutive years - 2015, 2016 and 2017 - and whose restaurant Pelegrini has been named Croatia’s best restaurant for the past few years and who has just this year received a Michelin Star – one of three in the whole of Croatia.

Dating back to the 11th century, St.Michael’s Fortress (Tvrđava Sv.Mihovila) is a unique cultural heritage monument that offers an ideal space for a different and more creative approach to event organising. One of the most prestigious and premium venues in the Adriatic, it includes an open-air stage with an auditorium level and five other exclusive premises that are multifunctional and have capacity suitable for the organisation of congresses, and business or private meetings.

The 17th century Barone Fortress (Tvrđava Barone), Croatia’s ‘Best Cultural Attraction 2016’, has become known as a venue for meetings, conferences, and other smaller events. Šibenik’s Town Hall (Gradska vijećnica Šibenik), in medieval times the most prominent building of the City of Šibenik, is today known as one of its most treasured cultural monuments. It is generally considered to be one of the most beautiful Croatian city halls. The first floor offers a hall that can be used for meetings, conferences, and other events, while the ground floor has been renovated for restaurant purposes.

Croatia’s second oldest theatre, which is the oldest theatre in Croatia still active today, was built in 1870. In addition to hosting various art and cultural events, the Croatian National Theatre in Šibenik (Hrvatsko narodno kazalište u Šibeniku) also hosts business events.

Amongst all the Croatian towns on the Adriatic coast, Šibenik is set apart by its unique location in a picturesque and open bay at the mouth of the Krka river. “Šibenik is the most photogenic city in the world,“ says Croatia’s most popular photographer, Ivo Pervan. Šibenik is renowned for its amazing cuisine, and one in particular stands out; Restaurant Pelegrini – a Michelin-starred Restaurant. Its marvelous location right next to the UNESCO’s St.James Cathedral adds to the wholesome experience. The local cuisine can be also tasted on the Fortress Barone which offers a special culinary experience combining typical Dalmatian brunch Marendin (local cheese, cured meats, fish, veggies and wines) with views over the Dalmatian Sea.

Klapa multipart singing, an ancient tradition of the Southern Croatian regions of Dalmatia, has since 2012 been inscribed on the UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Not only do numerous acclaimed Klapa groups come from Šibenik, but also the town’s inhabitants are known as the best singers in Dalmatia. So once in Šibenik, the incentive to learn the skill of Klapa singing is a must.

Šibenik days pass peacefully in the shade of its prominent historical buildings. For centuries the medieval city was successfully defended by its four fortresses. Two of them, St.Michael’s (Sv.Mihovil) and Baron (Barone) underwent a complete EU co-funded renovation that gave them the modern touch necessary for the today’s needs of event organisation. Since the renovation, both of the fortresses have become some of the most prestigious venues in the region. The St.Michael’s Fortress nests a venue that can host 1077 guests with a view over the Dalmatian sea. The Baron Fortress, in 2016 awarded the most prestigious award in Croatian tourism – the Best Cultural Attraction – offers space for events and for Marendin, the well established traditional event that brings both local and foreign guests looking for a different experience of Dalmatian gastronomy and culture.

Incubator, Trokut, Holiwork The City of Šibenik is devoted to implementing an innovative policy of attracting entrepreneurs, especially young ones. The PODI Entrepreneurship Zone (in which 35 production companies work), Urban Incubator and Urban Centre are already fully up and running. The Trokut Centre of New Technologies and Entrepreneurship will soon offer a contemporary incubator for IT and digital technology, including the ‘Holiwork’ project for international teams based on a great advantage of this Dalmatian town in comparison to the incubators and accelerators in the north of Croatia - the sun and the sea which are two of Šibenik’s greatest assets in attracting contemporary businesses. All the knowledge that comes with start-ups to Šibenik, will impact the people who use Šibenik’s locale the most. Šibenik is becoming the Silicon Valley of the South-East Europe.

Dalmatian Ethno Village

Kornati National Park

When thinking of a programme that would offer a true experience of Dalmatia, an event organiser cannot skip the Dalmatian Ethno Village in the very heart of Amadria Park, Šibenik. The Dalmatian Ethno Village impresses with its stone houses that take visitors into the world of traditions and values of Dalmatia’s ancestors. Visitors get a glimpse into the special charm of typical Dalmatian village life from the past, try traditional delicacies, join weaving and culinary workshops, visit the wine cellar, see the production and supply of olive oil, and witness how the brandy is made.

The Kornati Archipelago is spread over the central part of the Adriatic Sea in northern Dalmatia and close to Šibenik. A boat trip to the Kornati is an extraordinary experience. A visitor is welcomed with rakija (a locally made fruit brandy) and at lunch time served Dalmatian proscuitto and cheese, marinated sardines, octopus salad, salmon carpaccio, and the famous Skradin risotto. After lunch, visitors have a few hours to swim in one of the cleanest sea-waters in the world, and can snorkle to the sea bed, which is covered in red corals and pearly shells.
