HIGHLIGHTS: FACULTY EXCELLENCE
• Campus Compact and the Brown University Swearer Center for Public Service awarded Diya Abdo, Associate Professor of English in the Department of English and Creative Writing, as the 2019 recipient of the Thomas Ehrlich Civically Engaged Faculty Award, which recognizes faculty for their exemplary engaged scholarship, teaching and research.
• H. Curt ’56 and Patricia S. ’57 Hege Professor of History Timothy Kircher received a research fellowship at the Freie Universität of Berlin for summer 2020. He studied and presented research on the work of the Renaissance humanist Francesco Petrarch, whose life and work helped redefine the importance of classical learning in European society.
• Five Guilford College faculty members were published in the same book by the Friends Association of Higher Education. Featured in the latest volume of Quakers, Creation Care, and Sustainability are Associate Professor of Physics Donald Smith, Professor of Chemistry Gail Webster, Charles A. Dana Professor of English Jim Hood, Kyle Dell, and Charles A. Dana Professor of Geology and Sustainable Food Systems Marlene McCauley.
• Richie Zweigenhaft, Dana Professor of Psychology, published his first book, Geezerball: North Carolina Basketball at its Eldest (Sort of a Memoir).
• Associate Professor of English and Creative Writing Mylène Dressler and Visiting Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing Jennie Malboeuf were awarded a 2019-20 Artists Fellowship from the N.C. Arts Council. Mylène published the second book from her The Last Ghost series: I See You So Close and Jennie published her first book of poetry, God had a body.
• Chairperson of the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies and Assistant Professor Zulfiya Tursunova chaired a panel on “Reimagining peace and justice through accountability, transnational activism, sanctuary movements and decentralizing power” at the 2019 Peace and Justice Studies Association conference in Winnipeg, Canada.
• Associate Professor of Sport Studies Brenda Swearingin took a “dip of faith” and made the 12-mile swim around Charleston, S.C. The 12-mile swim in the Charleston waters was an initial test toward her ultimate goal of completing the English Channel Crossing.
• Dave Dobson, Professor of Geology, published his first novel, Flames over Frosthelm.
