Tim Jaeger, the artist behind “Reclining,” is fully immersed in the visual art scene. He graduated from Ringling College of Art and Design in 2002; is the gallery assistant at Selby Gallery; the CEO and co-founder of SarasotaVisualArt.com, a website dedicated to promoting the visual arts; a co-founder of art collective sARTq; and his work, such as this particular piece, is on display at State of the Arts Gallery, located at 1525 State Street. This piece is one of what will become a series of ballet dancers in the coming months. It is Jaeger’s initial exploration of a subdued color palette and subject matter. Ringling International Arts Festival 2013

Masterworks Series: ‘Dawning of a New Season’

arasota Ballet puts on a magical rendition of the classic “The Nutcraker” with a Sarasota spin that follows the story of John Ringling. It was created last year as a gift to Sarasota from Sarasota Ballet, and it’ll get even Scrooge in the holiday spirit. The two professional actors didn’t know each other very well, but after this overly caffeinated brainstorm — they became business partners. Fast forward to six months later, and that fortunate meeting evolved into a groundbreaking reality as construction of their (pending) nonprofit black box theater company, The Urbanite Theatre, is underway. The duo hopes the 50-seat intimate theater a block north of Whole Foods, located at 1487 Second St., will open this fall or winter.

BARRE Shelby Elsbree hasn’t performed in Sarasota since she was 13. The now-professional dancer is back for one night only.

The studio is familiar. Thirteen years ago, 9-yearold Shelby Elsbree took her first dance class with Mary Elizabeth Mock in the powder-blue studio that then belonged to the Florida Ballet Arts Academy. Back then, now-owner of the studio, Ariel Serrano, was a principal dancer with Sarasota Ballet under the direction of Robert de Warren. It’s in this same studio, which now houses the Sarasota Cuban Ballet, that a 22-year-old Elsbree, a professional dancer in Boston Ballet, marks the blocking and choreography of the rose adagio from “Sleeping Beauty” with de Warren and Serrano. Elsbree will be performing the number for Sarasota International Dance Festival and Carreño Dance Festival’s Festival of the Stars Saturday, Aug. 17. Elsbree’s mother, interior designer Cheryl Elsbree, sits in the corner of a room where she records video footage of her daughter practicing with Serrano to show, Scott Elsbree, Elsbree’s father. She wears a proud smile on her face. Elsbree keeps humbly saying, “Thank you!” to Serrano, but Serrano says he’s the one who feels honored to have worked with her. It’s as if Elsbree still sees herself as the young dancer she was before pursuing a professional career. De Warren remembers Elsbree as a 12-year-old who had just joined Sarasota Ballet School. FSU/Asolo Conservatory alumni Brendan Ragan and Summer Dawn Wallace will open The Urbanite Theatre — an edgy, hip, black box theater in downtown Sarasota.

n February, Summer Dawn Wallace and Brendan Ragan sat around Wallace’s square kitchen table. They had a passionate and lively discussion over entirely too many cups of coffee. They both quickly realized they had a similar agenda for their future plans in Sarasota. The two professional actors didn’t know each other very well, but after this overly caffeinated brainstorm — they became business partners. Fast forward to six months later, and that fortunate meeting evolved into a groundbreaking reality as construction of their (pending) nonprofit black box theater company, The Urbanite Theatre, is underway. The duo hopes the 50-seat intimate theater a block north of Whole Foods, located at 1487 Second St., will open this fall or winter. The partners are alumni of FSU/Asolo Conservatory — Wallace was one year ahead of Ragan. They had cordially chatted after shows and extended hallway greetings in passing between classes, but that was it. Their story is in the early stages of being written. This is how it starts. Wallace moves to New York City to act professionally for 11 months. She and her fiancé, Grant Herren, go on vacation to Sarasota and a dream accounting job in the area falls into Herren’s lap. The couple moved here last summer, just after Ragan graduated FSU/Asolo Conservatory. Ragan kept busy that summer filming an independent film, “The Lucky 6,” and making a few other acting appearances. Wallace had seen him perform a one-man show adaption of Homer’s “The Iliad” in January, at Home Resource.

ongs in minor keys trail through the halls of First United Methodist Church. A choir of 120 voices from six local choral groups sings a Yiddish song. The singers begin in unison. Then, each vocal part launches into a round: “Ani-ma’amin, Ani-ma’amin / I believe with reassuring faith / He will come,” they sing. Joseph Holt, the artistic director of Gloria Musicae, halts the singing to perfect the choir’s pronunciation. He worked with a native Yiddish speaker on the lyrics, and a few choir members also help with the partially Yiddish text. Once the group can properly sing the words, a member of the Sarasota Jewish Chorale shares the

context. The choir learns Jewish prisoners chanted “Ani-ma’amin” — which means “I believe” in Yiddish — as they were forced into Nazi gas chambers. The next time the choir sings the Yiddish melody the song is more powerful; the words have new meaning. This is a portion of one of the 22 songs in the 80-minute cantata, “Voices of the Holocaust,” which the group will perform April 28, at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. The group consists of voices from Gloria Musicae, Sarasota Jewish Chorale, Church of the Palms choir, the Sarasota Choral Society, Sarasota Young Voices and the Booker High School choir. The

instrumentation for the performance comes from The Chroma Quartet, in addition to four musicians from Sarasota Orchestra. It’s a diverse group of ages, races, religions and backgrounds. Concentration camp prisoners either sang or composed every piece featured in the cantata just before or during the Holocaust. The cantata will make its Florida debut April 28 and will be performed as a dance, vocal, instrumental and multimedia collaboration. Holt is the visionary behind this concert. He met the arranger of the cantata, Sheridan Seyfried, in 2004, when Seyfried, then in his early 20s, premiered the work.
