DARRIN

HANCOCK In 1990, an Alabama kid made a big splash in Garden City. But before that, the nation’s top high school prospect, signed with Jerry Tarkanian and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. That’s when fate intervened. Hancock failed to qualify through the NCAA Clearinghouse, meaning he had to take his talents elsewhere. That led him instead to enroll at Garden City Community College, where he could officially become eligible to transfer to another university after completing his coursework. Hancock wasted no time getting adjusted to the Jayhawk Conference, averaging 18 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals per game as a freshman, earning his third straight Parade All-American selection, while landing on the JUCO All-American third team. As a sophomore, Hancock was even better, bumping his average to nearly 22 points and 12 rebounds per game. He turned heads with his 37-point, 14-rebound, 10 assist triple double vs. Barton. And by season’s end, Hancock was named the 1991-92 NJCAA Player of the Year. Four-year schools took notice, and following his sophomore campaign, Hancock transferred to the University of Kansas. In 1993, the junior helped the Jayhawks capture the Big Eight regular-season crown, earning the second seed in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Tournament. The Jayhawks dominated, making it all the way to the Final Four before falling to North Carolina. After the ‘93 season, Hancock left Kansas, eventually transferring to Indiana State. But he never played there, and instead, spent a season overseas before being taken by the Charlotte Hornets in the second round of the 1994 NBA Draft. Hancock spent four years in the NBA, playing for the Hornets, Milwaukee Bucks, Atlanta Hakws and San Antonio Spurs. Hancock still holds the Garden City program record for most points scored over two seasons (1,180).

BUSTER STRENGTH GARDEN CITY IS THE ONLY PROGRAM IN THE JAYHAWK CONFERENCE THAT HAS A FULLTIME STRENGTH COACH. ENDURANCE AND POWER BUILDS RESULTS

One of the up-and-comers in the coaching ranks, Cole Dewey begins his first season as the head man in Garden City. For the North Carolina native, it’s a coming of sorts having spent the 2013 season as an assistant under Brady Trenkle where the Broncbusters finished 22-9. Since then, Dewey has landed assistant jobs at powerhouse South Plains (National runner-up in 201415) and Indian Hills before being hired by Otero in 2018. The following year, he guided the Rattlers to 25 wins and a No. 5 national ranking. “Coach Dewey was a tremendous hire by Garden City.” -Buzz Williams Texas A&M Head Coach

“We ddddhave to really build our program first and foremost. We have to get the name out there that Garden City basketball is back to what it was with the Keith Smart’s and the Darrin Hancock’s of the world. But this year has definitely been a challenge so far. However, I’ve been so impressed with the resiliency of the guys on a day-to-day basis. -Garden City Head Coach Cole Dewey

COLE DEWEY has posted a .723 winning percentage in two seasons as a head coach including a 25win campaign in 2019.

THE BUSTERS MAGICAL RUN to the 2009 njcaa tournament culminated with a sixth-place finish.

PRESEASON

NOTEBOOK Feb. 26, 2020 seems like a quarter century ago. To put that more into context, 336 days have passed since Patrick Nee’s team walked off the floor in El Dorado following an 18-point loss to Butler in the opening round of the Region VI Tournament. And a lot has changed since then. Less than 48 hours after that postseason defeat, Nee was handed his walking papers. Two weeks later, a pandemic crippled the nation, leaving sports a mere afterthought. But despite the country being put on lock down, administrators pushed forward with their search for Nee’s replacement, zeroing in on a guy who nearly a decade earlier, got his first taste of the Jayhawk Conference in Garden City under Brady Trenkle. “Nobody is going to outwork that guy,” Assistant Athletic Director, Colin Lamb said. “The hire was a no brainer.” Cole Dewey was hired in March; then quickly assembled his staff, bringing in his former assistant at Otero, Zach Towle and one-time Broncbuster coach, Jaxon Autry, who spent two years as an assistant under Kris Baumman from 2008-

2010. He also wasted no time in bringing back Mike “Scoop” Harding, who was the ultimate utility man during the 2019-20 campaign, serving as a men’s assistant, women’s head coach and assistant track coach. That was the easy part. The more challenging aspect came in retooling a roster that finished as the fifth worst offense and the fourth worst defense in the Jayhawk Conference. They also had to replace arguably one of the best shooting guards in program history in Tahlik Chavez, who signed with Rick Pitino and Iona after leading the league in scoring (20.4 ppg) while finishing third in 3-point percentage (44.4). Just how lethal was the freshman? He set the school record with 108 made triples while shooting almost 50 percent from the field. He posted 18 20-point scoring games including a 42-point outburst vs. Dodge City, 34 of which came in the second half. With Chavez out the door, Dewey went to work. He resigned Mason Osborne, the lone holdover from last year’s team. He then inked center Jasman Sangha, a

transfer from Pensacola State, JJ Watson, a Division-I bounce back from Hampton University, and Otero transfers Jaduhkiss Soto and Chase Hettinger. But his biggest pickup came in the form of a 6’0 pointguard transfer from Pittsburgh named KJ Marshall. The North Carolina native walked on for the Panthers last season, appearing in six games. Before that, he completed an illustrious prep career where he scored more than 1,000 career points at Trinity Christian Academy while leading the program to a pair of state championships. He was a two-time AllState performer. “KJ has a high basketball IQ,” Dewey said. “He knows how to put guys in the right position to succeed.” Joining Marshall is swing man Khadim Samb, a University of Idaho transfer who played in 21 games as a freshman and averaged 4 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. He shot nearly 50 percent from the floor and 7-of-14 on 3s. Then there’s Denver Jones, who averaged 36 points per game at Tennessee Prep during his junior season before finishing up his high school career at Memphis Day Academy. “Our main goal was to bring in guys who could shoot,” Dewey explained. “One through five will have that capability.” As for size, the first-year coach signed Mohamed Diarra, a 6’10 center from France, and Riny Lual, a 6’7 post from South Sudan. “I believe we put together a pretty balanced roster,” Dewey said. “This conference is as good as it gets, so, you have to be able to come at teams in different ways.” At Otero last season, Dewey directed one of the best 3-point attacks in the country.

P R E S E A S O N

The Rattlers were 13th in the nation in percentage, drilling 307 long balls. They also shared the ball, averaging nearly 19 assists per game (24th), which included a season-high 40 vs. Lamar JV. “We want to be able to come at you in a variety of different ways,” Dewey added. “And a big part of that is sharing the ball. We’ve got multiple guys who can handle the ball.”

N O T E B O O K

to face rival Dodge City, which marks an intriguing showdown of first-year coaches: Dewey vs. Jake Williams. Williams spent the previous three seasons at USC Salkehatchie where he led the Indians to a program record 27 wins last year and the National Tournament.

The Schedule

Because of concerns surrounding COVID-19, the NJCAA pushed back the basketball calendar until late January, meaning the Broncbusters first regular-season game comes more than two months after the normal calendar year would have started. Regardless, when Garden City opens in Arkansas City vs. Cowley on Jan. 27, there will be more of a sense of relief than anything. After all, when the NJCAA made the decision to push all sports to the spring, there were no guarantees that would actually play out. The good news for Dewey and company is that three of their first four games are at home, which includes a non-conference showdown with Clarendon on Sat. Jan. 30 followed by back-to-back league contests with Coffeyville and Neosho. Then, the Broncbusters head back to El Dorado to face Butler on Feb. 10, the same team that bounced the brown and gold from the postseason last year. But maybe the biggest early-season matchup on the schedule comes on Feb. 17 when Independence comes to town. Bill Morosco, who enters his second year in charge, built the Pirates into one of the most dangerous offensive teams in the Jayhawk in 2019-20. “This conference is brutal,” Dewey said. “I don’t think there’s a tougher conference in the country. And it really gets you prepared for the National Tournament.”

There wasn’t really a surprise at the top of the league when coaches picked Hutchinson, despite a down 2019-20 campaign, to win the west. But maybe the biggest shock was Dodge City, a team that finished tied for the second worst record in the league last season. However, the hiring of Jake Williams coupled with landing College of Central Florida All American Wayln Napper, who averaged almost 17 points and five assists per game last year, definitely helped the cause. In March, the Broncbusters open with three daunting match-ups: at Seward, home vs. Hutchinson and home vs. Colby, who qualified for the National Tournament as an at-large last year. That’s followed up with consecutive home games vs. Northwest Tech and Pratt before heading to Great Bend on March 17. “Every team in this league is in the same boat that we are,” Dewey explained. “And I think our guys have handled everything extremely well. There was so much uncertainty when these guys first got here. And to stop and start as many times as we did; to face the different elements that they did just to get to the regular season, is truly remarkable. I commend all the players on every team for battling through. COVID-19 has changed a lot of things, and hopefully we can all focus on basketball now and get this thing rolling again.”

Harding came to Garden City from Lawrence, where he spent the past five years as an assistant coach at Lawrence High School. There, he was part of a team that played in five straight 6A state tournaments. In 2015, the Lions finished as the runner-up to Wichita East. The following year, they went 24-2 and took third. Before Lawrence, Harding spent two years as the junior varsity coach at Raytown High School in Raytown, MO. Prior to that, he was the head coach at Bishop-Seabury Academy in Lawrence, where he won 22 games in two seasons. He did all of that while working the last 10 years in the registrar’s office at the University of Kansas. In high school, Harding was teammates with former No. 1 overall pick, Danny Manning at Lawrence High. After graduation, he played two years at Butler before moving onto Geor-

gia Southern, where he played with another first-round draft pick, Jeff Sanders (Chicago Bulls) and former Detroit Pistons Head Coach Michael Curry. While Harding is new to the college coaching scene, he has plenty of experience on the big stage. In 2000, he guided a team consisting of former KU standouts Wayne Simien and Jeff Hawkins, to an AAU National Championship.

PRESEASON

NOTEBOOK The 2019-20 season didn’t exactly play out according to plan. After just two years, Charinee Mitchell, who had helped stabilize the program, resigned as Head Coach in the summer to take a job at Lamar University. A couple of months later, former Athletic Director, Greg McVey, handed the keys over to first-time Head Coach, Omega Tandy, beginning a string of events that would reshape the history of the program. What ensued was one of the most forgettable seasons in recent memory. Following a triple overtime loss to Cowley at home on Dec. 7, Tandy was suspended. McVey coached the Broncbusters in a 13-point loss to Coffeyville on Dec. 11. Then men’s assistant Mike “Scoop” Harding, took the reigns at the beginning of the second semester after Tandy resigned, taking his lumps along the way, which included a 65-point loss to Seward County on Jan. 13. At the same time, Tandy’s two assistant coaches, Londaryl Perry and Todd Perdas also left, leaving Harding as the lone man on the bench. Following the Seward County game,

there were even discussions about potentially canceling the women’s season. The locker room wasn’t in a great place and Harding had no help. “It’s definitely been a strange year,” Harding admitted back in Feb. Despite those internal talks, administrators pushed forward. Harding even led Garden City to their most impressive win of the season: a two-point victory over No. 21 Butler on Jan. 20. But the Broncbusters could never string consecutive games together, losing their final three contests of the season including a 79-65 defeat to Coffeyville in the first round of the Region VI Tournament. Then came the offseason, one headlined by a global pandemic. But despite a landscape filled with unknowns, the Broncbusters managed to hire a man who had a history of revitalizing programs. Antwain Scales turned one of the worst girls’ basketball teams in the state Wichita South, into four-time state champions while posting a 53-game winning streak.

In 2017, he accepted a new challenge, taking over the women’s program at Colby Community College, a team drowning in nearly two-decades worth of futility. And after winning just eight games in his first season, Scales won 19 last year, guiding the Trojans to their first winning season since 2006. “Coach Scales has a history of success,” College President, Dr. Ryan Ruda said. “We feel like he can turn this thing around quickly.” Scales wasted no time assembling his roster. He first brought back reigning conference defensive player of the year, Donetria McGee and the squad’s third-leading scorer from a year ago, Ariyanna Hall. He then jumped on the out-of-state market and brought in Morgan State transfers Taylor Lawhorne and Elizabeth Sherrill. Throw in former Northeast Community College players, Elisabeth Matas-Martin and Katarina Zagorac, plus Southwestern Oregon transfer Kealani Neves, and the Broncbusters began to take shape. Scales also brought with him Britney Mapang, who averaged 21 points and seven rebounds per game, and Aerihna Afoa (10 ppg, 3 rpg) during their freshman season at Colby. “This team has a lot of experience,” Scales said. “We have a good mix of players who know my system and ones who have played college basketball.” Thats a perfect mix for Scales, who predicates his system on slowing the game down and stifling teams with tenacious defense; two areas sorely lacking last season. The Broncbusters finished 11th in the Jayhawk in shooting and were the second-worst defensive team in the conference. They surrendered a school-record 112 points to Cowley, a mark that had stood for more than 20 years.

“We’re going to defend,” said Scales, whose team finished in the top seven in points per game allowed last year. “That’s something I can guarantee.”

The Schedule

The Broncbusters road back to legitimacy in the Jayhawk West gets tested right off the bat with a trip to Arkansas City to face Cowley on Jan. 27, a place where the Broncbusters have dropped four straight games. That’s followed up a week later with back-to-back home dates with Coffeyville and Neosho before consecutive road games at Butler and at Cloud.

to build here in Garden City. If we play our style, everything else will take care of itself.”

Tightening the belt

During the 2019-20 campaign, Garden City finished second to last in the

“Our teams at Colby gave Seward a run for their money last year,” Scales explained. After losing to the Saints by 39, Colby nearly knocked off the 19th-ranked team in the country back in Feb. before Tianna Johnson’s put back at the buzzer sealed another Seward County win. Three days after their showdown with the Saints, Garden City hosts Hutchinson on a Saturday afternoon right before Scales faces off against his former team on March 10. That’s followed up by a stretch where the Broncbusters close the regular season with four out of their final six games on the road, including a trip to the Sports Arena on March 27. “The schedule is what it is,” Scales said. “We have to focus on what we’re trying

“There aren’t any easy games on this schedule,” Scales said. “You can’t take a night off. And when people aren’t expecting much from you, that’s when you need to take advantage.” The month of Feb. is littered with winnable games. They host Allen on the 20th before going to Pratt 48 hours later. That’s sandwiched between games with Barton and Dodge City before their first ultimate test of the 2021 campaign with a trip to Liberal to play Seward on March 3.

Jayhawk Conference in points per game allowed. They allowed a season-worst 112 points to Cowley and were dead last in opponents field-goal percentage. But one area the Broncbusters thrived in: forcing turnovers. In fact, they produced the fifth most takeaways in the nation last season.

Slow start

Last year, Garden City got off to a 4-6 start overall. But more alarming was the fact that they dropped their first five conference games-marking the first time since 2006 that the Broncbusters began league play 0-5.

No continuity

During the 2019-20 season, Garden City used 10 different starting lineup combinations.

Big leads dissipate [ 73 ]

The Jayhawk West has been dominated by two teams over the past two decades: Hutchinson and Seward. And nothing’s changed in anyone’s thinking entering this year. The Blue Dragons, who won 28 games in 2019-20, were picked first followed by Seward, despite the fact that the Saints have a new coach in Todd Ciochetto. Barton, Dodge City and Colby round out the top five followed by Garden City, who last year recorded its fewest wins since 2017.

Conference finishes

Garden City has finished sixth or worse five times in the previous six years. The last time they landed in the top three in the west: 2016 when they finished second behind Hutchinson.

ntwain Scales begins his first season as the Head Women’s basketball coach at Garden City Community College.

Scales’ resume is impressive to say the least. He spent seven illustrious seasons as the Head Girls Coach at Wichita South High School. There, he turned a program that had won just two games in three seasons prior to his arrival, into an absolute juggernaut. He compiled a record of 152-18 (.894) while leading the Titans to four straight 6A state championships-becoming the first program in history to accomplish that feat. During that stretch, Wichita South won 53 straight games before that streak ended in the 2017 state quarterfinals with a loss to Wichita West. Much to the surprise of many, Scales left Wichita South following the 2017 campaign to take the reigns at Colby Community College. The Trojans finished 5-26 in 2017-2018 and won only three games the year before that. They lost 23 straight contests in 2016-2017 while dropping 27 straight conference games. In his first season, Colby finished 8-22. But in

[ 77 ]

year two, the Trojans turned a major corner, winning 19 games while posting a winning record for the first time since 2006. They began the year 11-1, their best start since 2003-2004 under Tom Stephens. Scales originally signed to play football at Garden City back in the mid 90’s under Bob Larson before leaving to go back to Wichita. During his high school, Scales won state titles playing for Steve Eck at Wichita South before transferring to Wichita Heights to close out his prep career.

oleman Bender begins his first season as an assistant coach with Garden City Community College. He comes to Garden City after two seasons as an assistant at Chesapeake Junior College in Wye Mills, MD. where he was in charge of offensive play calling and player development. During his time there, the Skipjacks went 40-13, earning a berth in the 2018-2019 National Tournament. He also tutored two All-Region players and the tournament MVP. Before Chesapeake, Bender spent one season on the bench at St. Louis Community College, working in guard development, scouting and recruiting. During his lone year as an assistant, the Archers finished 25-4 and were ranked as high as No. 4 in the nation. They made a deep run in the Region 16 tournament, and he coached the Region Player of the Year. He also spent two seasons prior to that, coaching at Colby. Bender built a lot of those characteristics thanks to a 20-year career in the United States Army, working as an Armament Repairer and a facility manager. During his service, he was de-

After retiring, he coached the All-Army women’s basketball team, guiding them to a gold medal in the Armed Forces Tournament. He was also chosen to be an assistant for the team that represented the United States in the World Basketball Championships. They brought home the bronze medal. In addition, he has experience coaching at the High-School level, working as an assistant at Fayetteville Christian School in Fayetteville, NC and at Petersburg in Petersburg, VA. Bender earned his Master of Science in Sports Management from Liberty University in 2014 and before that, received his Bachelor’s in technical management from Devry University. He is also a member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and National Association of Basketball Coaches. He has one daughter, Alexas, 19, who runs track at Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA.

T

he board of trustees unanimously approved, on Feb. 12, 2019, Dr. Ryan Ruda as the seventh President of Garden City Community College.

Before taking on the lead roll, Ruda served as the interim President since the summer of 2018. Dr. Ruda has been a part of Garden City Community College for more than two decades, most recently serving as the vice president of instruction and student services. He began his tenure as a counselor before being named Director of Counseling in 2003. From there, Dr. Ruda held numerous leadership roles on campus including Athletic Director. Dr. Ruda is also very active in our Southwest Kansas community, where he volunteers on the United School District 363 Holcomb school board and the Board of the Garden City Area Chamber of Commerce. He participates in the Garden City Rotary Club and sits as an exofficio member of the Garden City Community College Endowment Association Board. Dr. Ruda completed his Doctorate in Community College Leadership through the Rouche Graduate Center at National American University in 2018. He also earned a Master of Science in Counseling and a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, both at Fort Hays State University.

Dr. Ruda and his wife, Amanda, have three daughters in middle and high school—Madi, Nicole, and Malia, all of whom attend school in Holcomb. When Dr. Ruda entered the Presidential role at Garden City Community College, he brought with him a renewed focus on student-centered and value driven decision making at the faculty, staff, and administrative levels. Dr. Ruda himself exemplifies the “BroncBUSTER” values, as they are called on campus. He is a servant leader, is a very relatable individual, and his passion for student success permeates the entire campus at GCCC.

JEFF TATUM

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

J

He then returned to GMC for 10 years as offensive coordinator and assistant head coach, leading the Bulldogs to three National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Championship appearances and one national title (2001).

reff Tatum begins his first year as the Athletic Director at Garden City Community College.

Tatum is a former Mississippi Delta Junior College quarterback and was a member of the coaching staff under James “Wooky” Gray that led Mississippi Delta to an undefeated 1993 season, one in which the Trojans won the North division, state and national championships.

Tatum’s offenses touted Top 10 national rankings each year and he was named Offensive Coordinator of the Year in 2002 by the conference. He returned to GCCC in 2010 as head coach and turned their program around, as he led GCCC to a win in the Mississippi Bowl in 2012 and became the only team outside of the state to do so.

He was an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at MDCC from 1987 to 1997. During his first stint in Moorhead, the coaching staff was named Mississippi Association of Community and Junior College (MACJC) Coaching Staff of the Year three times (1989, 1991, 1993) and he coached in the Real Dairy Bowl (1993). He has also coached in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Star game six times (1990, 1992, 1994, 2013, 2014, 2015).

Tatum moves to Garden City with his wife, Dawn. They have one daughter, Munday, who’s the Director of Recruiting Operations for North Carolina State football.

After his initial stint at MDCC, he then coached one year at Georgia Military College (GMC), where the team led the nation in rushing and finished No. 4 in the nation overall. Tatum spent the 1999 season with Garden City Community College (GCCC) and helped the Broncbusters win the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) state championship. Garden City spent most of that season in the No. 1 spot in the nationwide polls and finished No. 5 nationally overall. That season he and his fellow coaches were named the KJCCC Coaching Staff of the Year and Tatum coached in the Real Dairy Bowl game again.

Tatum and his assistants were selected as the 2012 KJCCC Coaching Staff of the Year and finished the year ranked No. 20 in the nation. It was at Garden City where he coached the likes of Tyreek Hill and Nick Marshall. Hill is a three-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro selection with the Kansas City Chiefs, while Marsahll was named the 2012 KJCCC Offensive Player of the Year and went on to lead the Auburn Tigers to a spot in the Division I national championship game as a record-setting quarterback. Tatum, who earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in health, physical education and recreation from Delta State University, returned to MDCC in 2013 as head coach of the Trojans and was named interim athletic director in August 2016. In 2017, he took on that role full-time along with his head coach title.
