Community Education–Welcome How to use this Lifelong Learning Guide This guide is arranged in sections, by category. In many cases classes/workshops that apply to several categories are crosslisted in each relevant section. Each section/category corresponds with a color: Workforce Development, pgs. 10-17. This section is made up of classes and workshops designed primarily for working people who are looking to enhance their on-the-job skills or to gain access to a new field or a new aspect of their current field. Health Care, pgs. 18-21. This section is made up of classes and workshops designed for the very industry-specific needs of aspiring and current health care professionals. Many classes are approved for mandatory continuing educational requirements, while others provide pre-licensure or precertification preparation for those looking to enter a health care field. Personal Enrichment, pgs. 22-34. This section includes workshops and classes in areas such as Art, Dance, Computers and others that people take primarily for enjoyment and self-development. In many cases these classes serve other purposes as well, but they are primarily for selfenrichment. Online Learning, pgs. 35-36. Courses in this section are all delivered via the internet, although some include textbooks and other materials. Most are asynchronous, that is you can do the work at any time. A few are synchronous, which means that you have to “attend” your online session “live” at a set time. All require an internet connection. Blended Classes, pg. 37. These classes and workshops are offered in collaboration with GCC academic departments and combine credit-free students from the community in the same classroom learning experience with GCC forcredit students.

Welcome—or Welcome Back— to Community Education at GCC The mission of Community Education at GCC is to offer our community the widest possible range of compelling and useful classes and workshops with some of the area’s most talented instructors. We believe that our two-part mission of Personal Enrichment and Workforce Development, along with the sheer number of people we serve each year (nearly 2500), make Community Education at GCC an integral part of this community. We’re confident that if you take some time to look over this Lifelong Learning Guide and our website (www.gcc.mass.edu/shopcreditfree/) you’ll see that it can serve as just that—a guide to your own lifelong learning. Whether you’re looking to learn a new skill you’ve always dreamed about, enhance your workplace skills, or get back into the workforce or into a new field, you’ll find scores of possibilities in these pages. If you’ve never taken a creditfree workshop with us, we hope this fall will change that. If you’re one of the many area residents who come back again and again, welcome back. Tree ID Using Bark and Habitat Clues With Nancy Goodman, naturalist

Bringing programs to the public since 1989. Resources designed to explore the rich and unique character of the Connecticut River Valley—its past, present and future. We offer the Valley’s only varied series of workshops, field trips and lectures relating to the Connecticut River Valley. All the programs sponsored by PVI are open to the public free or at a modest cost.

Sat, Oct 26 (rain date Sun, Oct 27),10 am–3 pm Bray Lake, Mt Tom, Holyoke MA For nearly half the year, bark provides the best clue to tree ID. Become familiar with the characteristic bark of different trees in different habitats— a wetland area and a dry upland— and at a different stage of growth. Bring binoculars, water, warm clothes in many layers as we will not be walking much, lunch, warm boots, and the book Bark by Michael Wojtech if you have a copy. We will meet at the parking lot of Bray Lake off Route 5. Nancy will have an orange cone on the trunk of her car. Pre-register with her at wildeyes@rcn.com

FALL PROGRAMS–2013

Sat, Nov 9, 9:30 am–4 pm. GCC Dining Commons More than a dozen vendors will display their rocks and minerals, gemstones and fossils, jewelry and fine art and there will be featured speakers. Videos, posters and books are for sale and there are demonstrations to the delight of kids. All this in this new wonderful setting.

Sat, Sept 28, 10 am—2 pm Richard Little & Nancy Goodman Holyoke MA. Heavy rain cancels. An exploration on 2 fronts at the southern end of Mt Tom, we start at Rt 141 with sedimentary sandstone with acidic soils; up the trail it’s basalt talus slopes with slightly richer soils. At the summit the rocks are solid basalt columns with a totally different communit. Come explore the rocks and plants, have lunch on the way and enjoy great views. This is a steep hike in spots and there may be loose rocks on the trail which can roll under you. Please wear sturdy hiking shoes (maybe even a walking stick), bring a lunch, bug spray, rain gear just in case and plenty of water. It can be very hot up here. Please pre register with Nancy at wildeyes@rcn.com

Bill Coli, IPM program director, Dept of Plant, Soil & Insect Sciences, UMass. Thur, Nov 14. Short business meeting at 6:30; program begins at 7pm. Loc TBA After initial information on farming in the Valley at the turn of the 20th century, Coli will turn his attention to changes after WWII, the so-called "Golden Age of Pesticides. From the beginnings of the environmental movement (after Rachel Carson’s "Silent Spring") that brought the banning of DDT, the development of new pesticides, the beginning of Integrated Pest Management , the development of GMOs and the dramatic growth in their use, as well as the development of the organic farming movement, Coli will then move on to recent changes: changing crop mixes, new marketing methods, the localvore movement, changes in land values and issues with farm succession and the increasing numbers of new entry farmers, issues associated with global climate change and invasive pests. Finally Coli will speak on the development of the Land Grant system (this is the 150th anniversary of its creation) and the unique system the US has in place to fund ag-related R&D and extend this research to farmers.
