Community Education–Welcome How to use this (Lifelong Learning Guide) This guide is arranged in sections, by category. In many cases classes/workshops that apply to several categories are crosslisted in each relevant section. Each section/category corresponds with a color: Personal Enrichment, pgs. 6-11. This section includes workshops and classes in areas such as Art, Dance, Computers and others that people take primarily for enjoyment and self-development. In many cases these classes serve other purposes as well, but they are primarily for selfenrichment. Workforce Development, pgs. 12-13. This section is made up of classes and workshops designed primarily for working people who are looking to enhance their on-the-job skills or to gain access to a new field or a new aspect of their current field. Health Care, pgs. 14-16. This section is made up of classes and workshops designed for the very industry-specific needs of aspiring and current health care professionals. Many classes are approved for mandatory continuing educational requirements, while others provide pre-licensure or precertification preparation for those looking to enter a health care field. Online Learning, pgs. 17-20. Courses in this section are all delivered via the internet, although some include textbooks and other materials. Most are asynchronous, that is you can do the work at any time. A few are synchronous, which means that you have to “attend” your online session “live” at a set time. All require an internet connection. Blended Classes, pg. 21. These classes and workshops are offered in collaboration with GCC academic departments and combine credit-free students from the community in the same classroom learning experience with GCC forcredit students.
Welcome—or Welcome Back— to Community Education at GCC The mission of Community Education at GCC is to offer our community the widest possible range of compelling and useful classes and workshops with some of the area’s most talented instructors. We believe that our two-part mission of Personal Enrichment and Workforce Development, along with the sheer number of people we serve each year (nearly 2500), make Community Education at GCC an integral part of this community. We’re confident that if you take some time to look over this Lifelong Learning Guide and our website (www.gcc.mass.edu/shopcreditfree/) you’ll see that it can serve as just that—a guide to your own lifelong learning. Whether you’re looking to learn a new skill you’ve always dreamed about, enhance your workplace skills, or get back into the workforce or into a new field, you’ll find scores of possibilities in these pages. If you’ve never taken a creditfree workshop with us, we hope this summer will change that. If you’re one of the many area residents who come back again and again, welcome back. Here’s to your lifelong learning. Bob Barba, Dean for Community Education

Community Education–Blended Classes The “Blended” classes on page 21 are offered in collaboration with GCC academic departments and combine credit-free Community Education students in the same classroom learning experience with GCC for-credit students. Why enroll in a class or workshop that is designated as credit/credit-free (also called “blended”)? GCC offers a unique opportunity for students to take selected classes or workshops either for credit or not for credit in the topic areas of: Renewable Energy, Languages, Computers, Business and Dance. • You may not need a grade or a degree but want to participate in courses for enrichment, to improve existing skills, or to acquire new ones. • You may not have the formal course prerequisites but might nevertheless benefit from the educational experience of the class. • Blended classes can create diversity in the learning environments and offer professional networking opportunities for students.

Online learning at GCC Our classes.Your schedule.
We want you to succeed at GCC.
GCC’s online courses allow students to complete all course requirements from their home or office. Students trying to balance work, family and education can fit online college courses into their own schedule, allowing them to pursue their education.
That means that the classes you take should be a good fit for your learning style and technical skills. Online classes can be a great fit for some students because they provide learning opportunities outside of traditionally scheduled classes. However, online courses are not for everyone.
Regular interaction with instructors is possible through online chat or video chat, email, phone, and online discussion areas dedicated to class questions and conversation. Regular access to a computer and the internet is required to complete an online class from GCC, as well as a basic understanding of computer usage and how to send and receive email.
Succeeding in an online course requires a high degree of
Fully online classes offer 100% of instruction online. You never need to visit GCC’s campus to complete your coursework (but a lot of our online students love coming here anyway, to study or work in our library or take advantage of our student services). Hybrid classes may require occasional meetings on campus, but generally 50%-99% of course work can be completed online. If you’re considering an online class, but you’re not sure if it’s a good fit for your learning style, a hybrid class might be a great place to start!
• self-motivation • self-discipline and independence • technical skill with computer software and in navigating and using websites You may be a good candidate for online learning if you • are comfortable using basic applications such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and email • have a computer with high-speed internet connection or easy access to a wifi connection • have a daily schedule that allows you the time needed to work on the computer to complete coursework • have strong time management skills • are able to work independently • are able to express yourself well in writing • can follow written instructions easily
