Community Education–Welcome How to use this Lifelong Learning Guide This guide is arranged in sections, by category. In many cases classes/workshops that apply to several categories are crosslisted in each relevant section. Each section/category corresponds with a color: Workforce Development, pgs. 10-17. This section is made up of trainings designed primarily for working people who are looking to enhance their on-the-job skills, gain access to a new field or learn a new aspect of their current field. Health Care, pgs. 18-21. This section is made up of classes and workshops designed for the very industry-specific needs of aspiring and current health care professionals. Many classes are approved for mandatory continuing educational requirements, while others provide pre-licensure or precertification preparation for those looking to enter a health care field. Personal Enrichment, pgs. 22-33. This section includes workshops and classes in areas such as Art, Dance, Computers and others that people take primarily for enjoyment and self-development. In many cases these classes serve other purposes as well, but they are primarily for selfenrichment. Online Learning, pgs. 34-35. Courses in this section are all delivered via the internet, although some include textbooks and other materials. Most are asynchronous, that is you can do the work at any time. A few are synchronous, which means that you have to “attend” your online session “live” at a set time. All require an internet connection. Blended Classes, pg. 36. These classes and workshops are offered in collaboration with GCC academic departments and combine credit-free students from the community in the same classroom learning experience with GCC forcredit students.

Welcome—or Welcome Back— to Community Education at GCC The mission of Community Education at GCC is to offer our community the widest possible range of compelling and useful classes and workshops with some of the area’s most talented instructors. We believe that our two-part mission of Personal Enrichment and Workforce Development, along with the sheer number of people we serve each year (nearly 2500), make Community Education at GCC an integral part of this community. We’re confident that if you take some time to look over this Lifelong Learning Guide and our website (www.gcc.mass.edu/shopcreditfree/) you’ll see that it can serve as just that—a guide to your own lifelong learning. Whether you’re looking to learn a new skill you’ve always dreamed about, enhance your workplace skills, or get back into the workforce or into a new field, you’ll find scores of possibilities in these pages. If you’ve never taken a creditfree workshop with us, we hope this semester will change that. If you’re one of the many area residents who come back again and again, welcome back. Here’s to your lifelong learning. Bob Barba, Dean for Community Education

Conway Station and Polly’s Bridge
Bringing programs to the public since 1989. Resources designed to explore the rich and unique character of the Connecticut River Valley—its past, present and future. We offer the Valley’s only varied series of workshops, field trips and lectures relating to the Connecticut River Valley. All the programs sponsored by PVI are open to the public free or at a modest cost.
Saturday, May 3, Meet at Big Y parking lot at 10 AM to carpool PVI in cooperation with the Deerfield River Watershed Association will present an historical visit to the Conway Station on Saturday, May 3. This site was important as the junction of the Conway Street Railway serving the industries of Conway by trolley to the New Haven Railroad and later the Boston and Maine Railroad. To make all this happen the New Haven Railroad built a 550 foot long bridge 160 feet above the South River and the trolley then built a lower and shorter bridge over the Deerfield River. Both of these bridges are long gone but pictures will be available to see. There now is a new pedestrian bridge over the South River only 30 feet above the river using the piers of the high bridge. There will be as much hiking as people wish along the Mahican-Mohawk trail which uses the old railroad road bed and a hike down to the dam which supplied electricity for the trolley

Tree ID Using Bark and Habitat Clues Saturday, March 1, 10- 2 PM, Conn. River Floodplain, S Deerfield, MA with Nancy Goodman Have you ever looked at a tree in winter and wondered what it might be. This is a continuation of an ongoing series showing trees that can be found in different habitats. Since for nearly half the year, bark provides the best clue to tree ID, we will be keying out the trees to see what we can learn. Become familiar with the characteristic bark of different trees in different habitats and at different stages of growth. Since there are now no leaves this is going to be a little more challenging than in the late spring or summer, but a much better way to focus just on the bark. We will be on a large river floodplain checking out the different trees that grow here.
Logging Presentation and Walk Harry Proudy of Ashuelot, NH, and Steve Puffer, logger. Saturday, April 26, 10 AM to 2:30 PM. Meet at the Shutesbury Town Hall at 10 AM. Come join historian Harry Proudy, of Ashuelot, New Hampshire, and logger Steve Puffer, of Shutesbury, Massachusetts, as they discuss the history of logging tools and how these tools were used to harvest timber. Mr. Proudy will discuss historic logging tools, focusing on the period from 1920-1950. He will also show a short video of those tools being used. Mr. Puffer will discuss his own experiences with these tools. After a short break for lunch we will take a hike in the Paul C. Jones working Forest in Shutesbury MA, a large tract of conserved forest land.
Sunday, May 4, 10 AM to 2 PM with Nancy Goodman, Ashfield MA Come explore this special place in a rich, mesic forest filled with masses of spring ephemerals including Dutchman’s Breeches, Spring-beauty, Bishops Cap, and trilliums among others interesting plants found here. The aptly named Fern Glade Trail passes through carpets of ferns and wildflowers. We will check out the spring awakening of the trees and other signs of spring. This hike is mainly moderate with some strenuous spots. Wear water resistant boots and bring bug spray, field guides, rain gear if needed and a bag lunch.
