Community Education–Welcome How to use this Lifelong Learning Guide This guide is arranged in sections, by category. In many cases classes/workshops that apply to several categories are crosslisted in each relevant section. Each section/category corresponds with a color: Workforce Development, pgs. 10-19. This section is made up of trainings designed primarily for working people who are looking to enhance their on-the-job skills, gain access to a new field or learn a new aspect of their current field. Health Care, pgs. 20-23. This section is made up of classes and workshops designed for the very industry-specific needs of aspiring and current health care professionals. Many classes are approved for mandatory continuing educational requirements, while others provide pre-licensure or precertification preparation for those looking to enter a health care field. Personal Enrichment, pgs. 24-32. This section includes workshops and classes in areas such as Art, Dance, Computers and others that people take primarily for enjoyment and self-development. In many cases these classes serve other purposes as well, but they are primarily for selfenrichment. Blended Classes, pg. 33. These classes and workshops are offered in collaboration with GCC academic departments and combine credit-free students from the community in the same classroom learning experience with GCC forcredit students. Online Learning, pgs. 34-36. Courses in this section are all delivered via the internet, although some include textbooks and other materials. Most are asynchronous, that is you can do the work at any time. A few are synchronous, which means that you have to “attend” your online session “live” at a set time. All require an internet connection.

Welcome—or Welcome Back— to Community Education at GCC The mission of Community Education at GCC is to offer our community the widest possible range of compelling and useful classes and workshops with some of the area’s most talented instructors. We believe that our two-part mission of Personal Enrichment and Workforce Development, along with the sheer number of people we serve each year (nearly 3000), make Community Education at GCC an integral part of this community. We’re confident that if you take some time to look over this Lifelong Learning Guide and our website (www.gcc.mass.edu/shopcreditfree/) you’ll see that it can serve as just that—a guide to your own lifelong learning. Whether you’re looking to learn a new skill you’ve always dreamed about, enhance your workplace skills, or get back into the workforce or into a new field, you’ll find scores of possibilities in these pages. If you’ve never taken a creditfree workshop with us, we hope this semester will change that. If you’re one of the many area residents who come back again and again, welcome back. Here’s to your lifelong learning. Bob Barba, Dean for Community Education
