Greenfield Community College
Community Education–Welcome How to use this Lifelong Learning Guide This guide is arranged in sections, by category. In many cases classes/workshops that apply to several categories are crosslisted in each relevant section. Each section/category corresponds with a color: Workforce Development, pgs. 7-11. This section is made up of trainings designed primarily for working people who are looking to enhance their on-the-job skills, gain access to a new field or learn a new aspect of their current field. Health Care, pgs. 12-15. This section is made up of classes and workshops designed for the very industry-specific needs of aspiring and current health care professionals. Many classes are approved for mandatory continuing educational requirements, while others provide pre-licensure or precertification preparation for those looking to enter a health care field. Personal Enrichment, pgs. 16-20. This section includes workshops and classes in areas such as Art, Dance, Computers and others that people take primarily for enjoyment and self-development. In many cases these classes serve other purposes as well, but they are primarily for selfenrichment. Blended Classes, pg. 21. These classes and workshops are offered in collaboration with GCC academic departments and combine credit-free students from the community in the same classroom learning experience with GCC forcredit students. Online Learning, pgs. 22-23. Courses in this section are all delivered via the internet, although some include textbooks and other materials. Most are asynchronous, that is you can do the work at any time. A few are synchronous, which means that you have to “attend” your online session “live” at a set time. All require an internet connection.
Welcome—or Welcome Back— to Community Education at GCC The mission of Community Education at GCC is to offer our community the widest possible range of compelling and useful classes and workshops with some of the area’s most talented instructors. We believe that our two-part mission of Personal Enrichment and Workforce Development, along with the sheer number of people we serve each year (nearly 2500), make Community Education at GCC an integral part of this community. We’re confident that if you take some time to look over this Lifelong Learning Guide and our website (www.gcc.mass.edu/shopcreditfree) you’ll see that it can serve as just that—a guide to your own lifelong learning. Whether you’re looking to learn a new skill you’ve always dreamed about, enhance your workplace skills, or get back into the workforce or into a new field, you’ll find scores of possibilities in these pages. If you’ve never taken a creditfree workshop with us, we hope this semester will change that. If you’re one of the many area residents who come back again and again, welcome back. Here’s to your lifelong learning. Bob Barba, Dean for Community Education

Community Education–Workforce Development
Manufacturing Trainings at GCC! Are you out of high school or graduating soon? Out of work? (Or in a job that pays too little?) Wish you’d taken a vocational-technical pathway? IT’S NOT TOO LATE! GCC has partnered with the Franklin Hampshire Regional Employment Board and Career Centers, Franklin County Technical School, and a consortium of area manufacturing companies to develop and implement foundational and advanced manufacturing training programs. Due to the aging workforce and high demand, there are more precision manufacturing jobs than qualified workers to fill them. We’re looking for motivated adults, particularly but not exclusively older youth, with mechanical aptitude to participate in our trainings. Trainings are tuition-free to eligible candidates who are accepted.
The next 12-week, 220-hour, hands-on intensive training for CNC Operators will begin in Fall and will prepare unemployed/underemployed adults for entry-level CNC machining. Foundational Manufacturing trainings (4 weeks, 80 hours) will prepare workers for entry level manufacturing jobs. Many advanced manufacturing jobs start at $15-$16/hr and wages rise steadily with experience and training. An experienced machinist can make $60,000+ a year! The modern manufacturing workplace is cleaner, safer and highly-automated. It needs people who are smart, skilled and dedicated.

You know the longer you are unemployed and the older you are the less likely you’ll work again. So take charge of your situation, and you can say “I am taking some time off to teach and write a book.” Help meet the unmet demand at colleges for non-credit education instructors in every field. You need no credentials to teach, just passion for the topic and joy in teaching it to others. You can teach through schools live sage-on-the-stage, or over the internet courses, or both. The schools get you the students, you teach the class, the schools pay you. You usually work as an independent contractor, and your status allows you to write and consult as well. You’ll love working again.
Swing is the quintessential American dance. Developed in Harlem in the 1930s, swing has remained a favorite among all generations. The upbeat tempos of big band, blues and rockabilly music all lend themselves to the easy and spirited dance steps of Swing.
