THANKSGIVING 2016

FOOD

Help Feed Hungry Neighbors this Thanksgiving Every family has their own Thanksgiving traditions. There are prized recipes, special gatherings, football games, apple orchards, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, excursions in the crisp fall air, and on and on. These give added joy to the holiday and bring families closer together. But today, we’re asking you to remember people in our community who don’t have the luxury of tradition. They can’t afford the basics, let alone

Thanksgiving Turkey Drive! This Thanksgiving, we need your help to provide Thanksgiving dinners to people in need. There are two great ways you can help: DONATE — Because we buy in bulk, a dollar given to the Food Bank goes much further and those savings are passed on to our member programs. VOLUNTEER — We’re always grateful for our volunteers, and that’s especially true during the holidays. Volunteers are needed year round so if you want to help prepare meals, visit: www.greaterclevelandfoodbank.org and click ‘‘Give Help.ʼʼ

a fancy turkey dinner. By the time they come to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, or one of our member agencies, they’re just hoping to survive. Your support can make an incredible difference for these families and individuals — helping parents feed their children, providing meals to senior citizens on fixed incomes, and giving hope to neighbors who could really use some.

MAKING THE BEST OF LEAN TIMES

Every $1 you donate provides four complete, nutritious meals. Every Meal is a Gift.

Circumstances are tough for this family, but your support ensures they have food to eat . . .

Create a Legacy & Ensure Tomorrow’s Harvest

Leah is supposed to be eating, but she can’t stop giggling. Her cousins are teasing her gently. The whole family, six in all, is enjoying a special dinner at University Settlement in southeast Cleveland — thanks to your support of the Greater Cleveland Food Bank.

You can make it your life’s work to fight local hunger for generations to come by including the Greater Cleveland Food Bank in your will or living trust. These legacy gifts, sometimes called bequests, are one of the easiest ways to make a lasting impact at the Food Bank. By doing so, you will be among many others in Tomorrow’s Harvest, our esteemed planned giving society. Furthermore, you will have peace of mind knowing your estate will be distributed precisely according to your wishes — and will continue making a difference when you are no longer here to do so.

Their circumstances are difficult, but not surprising in this struggling community. The father, Todd, explains: ‘‘I’m a single father trying to raise my two girls. I watch my nieces and nephew regularly. But it’s tough providing everything we all need right now because I only have part-time work.ʼʼ

This Thanksgiving season, they’re all so grateful for the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. ‘‘If it wasn’t for these meals and groceries, I don’t know what we’d do,ʼʼ Todd says. ‘‘Having a place where we

can come get a hot meal makes Todd a huge difference. The girls love it — for them it’s like going out to a restaurant.ʼʼ

Thanks to your support, this family has food to eat. If you ask Leah and the other children what their favorite foods are here, you get answers typical of kids: ‘‘Burgers; chips; dessert; pizza!ʼʼ That’s why Todd is so grateful for the healthy food, too. ‘‘They get peas and carrots, apples and peaches . . . this place is just awesome.ʼʼ Thank you for ensuring that Leah and her family get the nutritious food they need to survive through lean times!

OUR MISSION: Working together to ensure that everyone in our

communities has the nutritious food they need every day.

Full Bellies, Full Hearts for Thanksgiving Gayle, Cleveland, OH ‘‘ My husband passed away and I’ve been very sick. While I was in the hospital, my apartment was burglarized. I’m so grateful for the Food Bank. The people here are wonderful.ʼʼ

Willie, Cleveland, OH ‘‘ I am retired and live alone on a fixed budget. I have been coming here for years. I never miss it. Without the pantry, I don’t know where else I’d get food.ʼʼ

Mary, Parma, OH ‘‘ I’m on a fixed income with very little to live on. I’d hate to think where I’d be without the Food Bank. I love the milk, eggs, and produce. I deeply appreciate everything they do.ʼʼ

Food for Thought It’s truly a sight to behold . . . Each day, our 14 trucks head out to food pantries and other distribution sites in six counties across Northeast Ohio. The trucks are filled to the brim with food that will soon be on the tables of hungry children, families, seniors, and other struggling neighbors. And you are to thank. Caring partners like you who support the Greater Cleveland Food Bank make it all possible. Your generosity is bringing us closer to the day when no one in our community goes hungry. I’m especially grateful for you this Thanksgiving season, when we will provide holiday meals for people who are struggling to get by. These are folks who can’t afford basic food items, let alone a holiday feast. But thanks to you they won’t be left out of the celebration. Every meal truly is a gift.

“ They won’t be left out of the celebration.”

On behalf of these grateful neighbors, and all of us here at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, thank you . . . and Happy Thanksgiving!

Every Meal is a Gift

Chef Thom Steinmetz, Executive Chef at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, is counting on you to help feed hungry people this holiday season. Executive Chef Thom is used to preparing meals for large crowds. After all, he’s crafted cuisine at some of the finest restaurants and country clubs around. But this Thanksgiving will present one of his biggest challenges yet, and he needs your help. With your support, Chef Thom and his team at the Food Bank are gearing up to prepare over 6,400 holiday meals for hungry people across Northeast Ohio. Turkey, green beans, corn, stuffing, sweet potatoes, pie — a complete and festive feast for hungry neighbors, many of whom can’t even afford to buy bread. ‘‘The people we serve deserve our best,ʼʼ Chef Thom says. ‘‘I want them to receive great food they will want to eat.ʼʼ Chef Thom has a passion for helping hungry people, and it’s matched by his passion for

great food. ‘‘When I first started working at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank four years ago, there was a lot of frozen food,ʼʼ he says. ‘‘But now we serve more fresh foods and whole grains.ʼʼ

Every $1 you share means 4 holiday meals! This shift toward more fresh and nutritious foods has been made possible by caring people like you who support the Food Bank. Please continue your partnership today with a gift to help Chef Thom and his team of staff and volunteers during this busy time of year. And if you would like to roll up your sleeves and help in the kitchen, Chef Thom is glad to have you. ‘‘We need about 70 kitchen volunteers per day during the holiday season,ʼʼ he says.

Your Impact at Thanksgiving and Throughout the Year

Carolyne, Cleveland, OH ‘‘ After rent, insurance, phone, and other bills, there’s nothing left. If it wasn’t for this place, I don’t know what I’d do. They take good care of me and I’m grateful.ʼʼ
