ROBERT KRUGER’S • 55 CHEV PICKUP

Article and photos by Ted Bondi

Robert Kruger has owned this vehicle for approximately eleven years. Once Robert saw this long bed, stepside truck for sale in a magazine, he knew he had to have it. He had it shipped to Ontario from Westlock, Alberta, Canada. Little did he know what the next several years held in store. This Chevy pickup has undergone a complete body off restoration and customizing process over the past several years. This truck has undergone a complete Body off restoration and customizing process over past several years. All of the trucks sheet metal components are now properly fitted. The body gaps have been properly adjusted so that they are better than new. For the most part the body was left just the way it was. The original firewall has been smoothed and customized to allow the engine to be moved back in the chassis. The tail gate has had the original latch assemblies removed and new “Stealth” latches have been installed, giving the truck a cleaner, smoother look. After the fuel tank was moved from the cab to the rear of the vehicle a Hagan custom fuel tank door was installed in the right rear fender of the truck. The factory fuel tank filler neck assembly has been removed from the left side of the cab and the necessary metal work to fill the area has been done. A pair of custom aftermarket secondary brake lamp assemblies have been installed in the rear of the bed side rails of the truck. These lamps add a nice touch to the appearance of truck and aid in the visibility of the truck when braking. To maintain a stock look original style rear inner fender wells were utilized when the truck was mini-tubbed in order to accommodate the upgraded 9” Ford differential assembly. The floor of the truck bed consists of custom cut oak planks that have been finished to furniture quality standards with stainless hold down kit. The vehicle’s exterior is painted two-tone, yellow and white, the paint was wet sanded and polished to a brilliant shine. A 1/8” pinstripe has been added to separate the two colours. The under side of the body has been sprayed with black Line-X for a nice clean look. The front floor pans, firewall and the rear inner fenders are all painted white, to match the upper portion of the trucks body. All the glass is tinted, with new rubbers, seals and weather strips, along with new window regulators and hardware. All of the chrome and stainless is either new or been re-chromed. 55 Chevy Pick Up rolls on new aluminium American Racing Torque Thrust II wheels that are wrapped in B.F. Goodrich tires. The chosen tire and wheel combination really compliments the stance of the vehicle.

The majority of the interior is finished in black. The steel portion of the interior of the cab is painted satin black. The original headliner is still installed. The stock instrument cluster has been replaced by a billet aluminium dash bezel assembly that houses Old Tyme White ll gauges from Autometer. The factory steering wheel has been replaced by a beautiful billet aluminum, black leather wrapped Flaming River Waterfall steering wheel and matching billet wheel adapter assembly. The Ididit tilt steering column is fitted with aftermarket turn signal and tilt column levers that are equipped with billet knob assemblies to match the billet brake, throttle and parking brake pedals. All of the interior chrome components i.e. window cranks and door handles have been replaced. The original bench seat assembly has been replaced with a pair of bucket seats that have been professionally customized and completely refinished. The seats are wrapped in black leatherette with black and grey cloth insets. Custom made seat brackets and bezels have also been utilized in the new interior. The custom seat track bezels are finished in the same black leatherette material as the seats. The seats are separated by a custom built console that houses the floor mounted gear shift assembly and a pair of stainless steel cup holders. The sound system consists of a Kenwood model KDC152 AM/FM CD stereo and a pair of 6”x9” three-way speakers. The stereo is equipped with an infrared remote. The shifter is fitted with a custom, hand made boot assembly. Te floor is covered with a black carpet and a pair of black carpet floor mats. A custom parcel shelf has been constructed and installed behind the seating area. Under the hood of this Chevy is a new 502 CID V8 GM crate motor that is mounted to a custom front clip

assembly. The engine was dyno tested and produced 512hp at the crank. The big block is fuelled by a new Holley carburetor that is bolted to the GM Performance intake manifold. The fuel is supplied to the engine via a new GM Performance frame mounted electric fuel pump assembly and all new custom made fuel lines. A new GM Performance HEI ignition system provides the spark to bring this Chevy to life. A pair of short tube ceramic coated headers allow the aluminium cylinder heads to perform to their maximum potential. A custom mandrel bent dual exhaust system allows the spent gases to exit the power plant. A pair of mirror polished stainless steel Magnaflow mufflers have been utilized in the fabrication of the performance exhaust system. All of the exhaust pipe connections are sealed using stainless steel band clamps. Mounted behind this mammoth engine is a freshly built GM 700 R4 automatic transmission that is shifted via a Lokar floor mounted gearshift assembly. A custom built driveshaft connects the horsepower to the Ford nine inch rear differential that is equipped with disc brakes and a four link coil over suspension assembly. Up front, a custom front clip that includes a new cross-member, tubular A-arms, coil over suspension and disc brakes has been installed on the stock ’55 frame rails. A power rack and pinion steering has been utilized to aid in the steering ability. Stainless steel Borgenson U joint assemblies and lower steering shaft connect the power rack to the Flaming River tilt steering column. Bolted to the clean and smooth firewall is a Classic Performance Parts dual chamber power brake and a master cylinder assembly. Cooling this mammoth power plant is provided by a heavy duty, high density OEM Style radiator assembly that is secured using custom crafted brackets. Custom upper and lower radiator shrouds have also been fabricated during the build process, to aid in efficient cooling while cruising on those hot summer days. All new

plumbing has been installed on the very clean, well detailed chassis assembly. The entire truck has been professionally rewired. All new switches, lamp sockets and related electrical components have been utilized during the extensive build process. The Optima red top heavy duty battery has been relocated from it’s original location on the firewall to the outside of the right frame rail, just under the passenger door area. A custom aluminum battery box assembly was built to mount the battery. A hidden master shut off switch has also been implemented into the electrical system. The complete body off restoration and customizing of this beautiful 1955 Chevy began in Aurora, Ontario and was finally completed approximately 10 years after the original purchase of the truck. This process produced a lot of stumbling blocks and mental anguish for all those involved, including the unfortunate death of the builder and leader of the project Bill Snow of “Snow’s Hot Rod Shop”. After Bill Snow’s untimely death the truck was moved from his shop in Port Perry, Ontario to Bondi’s Auto Services Ltd. in Aurora. It was their job to complete Roberts dream and make it a reality. Little did we know that this undertaking would turn into nearly a three year process. 1955 Chevrolet Pickup build sheet Build date: Completed winter of 2013. After the fall of 1971, Plymouth Barracuda and Dodge Challenger faced an uncertain future. Chrysler Corporation was getting out of sponsored drag racing and eventually NASCAR would be reduced in scope as well. The 426 hemi engine, 440 Six Pack and 383 Magnums were dropped from the E body platform. As of 1972, the 340 four barrel was the sole high performance engine option. To make it even worse, Dodge dropped the convertible body style as well. Blaming poor sales doesn’t really work this time around because Dodge enjoyed much higher production than the Barracuda. FEATURED rIDES

BILL SCHULTZ’S • 65 CHEVY NOVA

A lot of us can relate to old hot rods or cars we once had and sold it only to wish we had it back several years later. What are the chances of your old ride still being around, let alone ever owning it again? This is a story about a determined lady who wanted to find her husbands old ‘65 Chevy Nova. That lady is Shelly Schultz, and her lucky husband is Bill Schultz of Lafayette, In. Shelly and Bill had joked about getting the old car back and she had heard the ole Nova was for sale and knew just who to contact in finding Bill’s car. A call was made to Greg Budreau of Auto Specialty in Lafayette, 765-477-7300 and he knew who had the car, so Shelly called to inquire about the ‘65 and a deal was made. The guy that Bill sold the car to back in ‘87 still had it, he drove it one year, parked it and then blew it all apart. The ironic part of this story is the fact that this was Bill’s very first car when he was sixteen, and Shelly bought it back as a surprise for his 40th birthday back in ‘2005! This was an original 194 c.i. six cylinder / powerglide car and Bill had big plans for the Nova. After some brainstorming with good friend Greg Budreau and crew at Auto Specialty, a plan was put into action which included a pro street look, slammed with air bags and a big 871 huffer within eyes view. Greg Budreau is a very talented individual who is responsible for all the fabrication work on this killer shoe box Nova. The custom rear chassis is made up of 2”x 3” and 2”x 4” rectangular steel material, while a 9-inch Ford Posi rear (4.56:1) with Moser axles was positioned into place. Up front you’ll find a TCI tubular front clip with rack & pinion steering, and 2” dropped spindles. Ridetech shock waves were used in all four corners for ride quality and that cool down in the weeds look when not in motion. Four wheel disc brakes were used all the way around so Schultz can chalk it down quickly when putting his heavy foot into that healthy rat motor sitting between the frame rails.

American Racing wheels were chosen to make it a complete rolling chassis; Torque Thrust II gray spoke to be exact, 15”x6” up front and huge 15”x15” out back all tightly wrapped in Hoosier rubber. Giving the little shoe box thunder is provided by a ‘70 Chevy 454c.i. big block that’s been bored .030 over which bumps it up to around 460 cubes. Auto Specialty is responsible for all machine work and assembly. Internals consist of a G.M. steel crank, H beam rods and Hyper Tech pistons with everything being balanced. A Crane solid lifter roller camshaft is called upon to keep the valve train in sync. Edelbrock aluminum heads with roller rockers helps keep the “potent rodent” breathing comfortable while an 871 blower underdriven 12% from The Blower Shop topped with Demon blower carbs takes care of induction duties. Ceramic coated 2” Hedman headers with a 3” custom mandrel bent exhaust system and Flowmaster mufflers was fabricated by Greg Budreau to exit all spent gases. Putting power to the huge Hoosier weenies is supplied by a reworked 700R4 tranny with a Big End torque converter and 2400 stall, all mods performed by Dave Taylor. Helping Schultz to select the right gear is courtesy of Hurst lightning rods. The body was next on the agenda and Troy Anderson was the man responsible for the killer mile deep paint job, however, before any paint went on Troy used a fine tooth comb to go over the body with the only modifications being a filled fuel door. Being confident the ‘65 was ready for paint, Troy pulled out his trusty gun, filled it with ‘97 Honda matador red pearl and laid several coats on to give it the awesome look before you.

One of the last things on the list was the interior; however a lot of loose ends needed finished up before any threads were sewn. If one looks closely, you’ll notice a very subtle six point roll cage; all fabbed up by Greg Budreau. An E-Z Wire wiring kit and Alpine stereo system was owner installed. Next Schultz contacted Jose at Miranda’s Custom Upholstery in Lafayette to cover the interior with sandstone colored Ultraleather material while custom beige carpet brings it all together. A GT steering wheel sits on top of a custom tilt steering column while a set of Dolphin gauges fill a billet aluminum insert to finish out the dash. With the little ole Nova completed and now on the road again, its time for Bill and Shelly to get out and have some fun. With the determination, love and support that Shelly has for her husband, they are now able to enjoy their ride with all the hard work and late hours, along with everyone else’s help who made their dream a reality. After many years of missing in action, this ’65 shoe box was once lost but now found, and finally “it’s back home where it belongs”.
