Foreword from the Commissioner

Every land has its own story. Located at the junction of Tamsui and Keelung River, Guandu is richly endowed with abundant wetlands ecosystem and profound historical background. However, urbanization has separated humans from nature and thus led to an innocence of history of our own lands. With the experience in the past ten years, Guandu International Nature Art Festival has come to a new stage with an ambitious framework combing in-depth field research with art creations. Entitled Based on A True Story, this year's theme aims to bring about reflections on the local culture and environment by means of artistic expressions.

After fully understanding the ecology and history of Guandu through field study, artists created site-specific artworks by using local natural materials such as clay, rattan, bamboo, or other handy objects. The five rustic artworks therefore told stories about urban change, religion, and ecology conservation, showing the artists' unique aesthetics and care for the environment. During the on-site production phase, visitors were able to get involved in the creating process, to cooperate, and to talk with the artists. The creative activities designed by the artists on the opening day even opened up more opportunities for visitors to participate in art. The 2016 Guandu International Nature Art Festival invites all to feel the cultural and environmental vibrancy of our own land with a view to building a more sustainable and visionary Taipei together. The Guandu International Nature Art Festival celebrates its 11th year in 2016. Over the past decade, the Wild Bird Society of Taipei (WBST) has been dedicated to promoting ideas about nature conservation through art projects, in which the very basic framework is to invite artists to create artworks in dialogue with nature in Guandu Nature Park. In the past two years, the art creation period has been prolonged with a view to allowing the artists more time for exploring the natural environment and local culture in Guandu. To be brief, public participation, art intervention, and natural conservation are the key elements of this art event. It is gratifying to see how nature, art, and community can be more and more integrated year by year. The fest this year spotlights a theme Based on A True Story with a new framework of a longer residency program

for the artists. They were invited to cultivate ideas based on the history, environment, and culture of Guandu area,

and thus transformed the stories discovered into creative artworks. For instance, Influence by Elena Redaelli mentioned the bird flu outbreaks leading to the start of the Guandu art project; Black Water, The Pure Land by

Chi-Hao Pai spread in three parts of the Park and talked about the interdependent relations between the land and the river. Those artworks tell inspiring stories and therefore remind us to care for our own environment. Guandu Nature Park is a gem of the city serving as home to many species as well as a major stopover site for migrating birds. The Department of Economic Development, Taipei City Government, long been devoted to preserving natural environments, will keep working side-by-side with the WBST to make Guandu Nature Park an indispensable model for environmental conservation. With endless efforts, we expect Guandu International Nature Art Festival to become a paradigm showing how nature, environment, and art can be intertwined to serve some grander purpose to our living world.

Foreword from the President of WBST

As a scientist, being realistic and finding the truth by verification is always the way I am. To finish this foreword, I carefully recalled the whole process of the 2016 Guandu International Nature Art Festival and reviewed words left by the team, artists, and participants. I suddenly realized that their words have become the best forewords. Below are some excerpts:

We believe that art, place, and life can never be separated. This art project doesn't mean to take people away from theirordinary

life, but to provide a way for us to really look at our own life, and learn to make each day count.

What really matters in the Guandu art project is not just beautiful artworks, but the true stories behind the lands, and the people

who really care for her.

When the environment and culture of a place is destroyed, the memory related to the place will be gone as well. If people can

cherish and take good care of their own lands, they will create a city rich of cultural deposits, which is fatally attractive to both residents and visitors.

I found the motivation of the Park not necessarily about contemporary art. The primary concern is environmentalism. Having

artworks in such a natural setting is not like a contemporary art institution can be.

They were different life stage of clay. It shows how a laborious process could be back to its initial state. It is just like a performance.

Each stage has its own story.

We thought it might be interesting to put together nature, sound, and environmental problems.

For me, art is not just about making art works. It is a medium for me to get close to people, to understand them, and even to help them.

This art project required us to integrate true outcomes and statistics into our concepts. I liked the idea and I also wanted to work

with the place by having more chances to investigate some issues with some researchers. This is important because this is the part that makes this art project special, which is much more meaningful than just building an outdoor sculpture park.

All kind of designs in Nature are arguably expressions of the Universe in its subtle and spontaneous manners.

Why humans cry and laugh is because they want to express themselves. When there's any imbalance that humans can't express

though laughter and tears, they show it through art. Nature has its own way of expression. You'll never find a better designer than nature itself. That's why I found the subject of this year Base on a True Story interesting.

I found the webpage of the art project didn't show the full beauty of Guandu. The variety of animals and plants here is beyond my

imagination. People are friendly too. Taipei also surprised me. I found the people here taking good care of children. Kids here seem to

have no stress, and they don't shout or make loud noises in public. When a county has love for children, it is a country with future.

Every word has touched my heart. The 2016 Guandu International Nature Art Festival will certainly keep growing, developing, and exerting its influence through unveiling different records of this beautiful process. President Wild Bird Society of Taipei 9

Guandu International Outdoor Sculpture Festival, dating back to 2006, was Taiwan's first large-scale natural art event held in a conservation park. The park is located in Guandu wetland, a place with unique estuary culture and diverse ecosystem. The festival takes place annually and invites artists all over the world to create site-specific outdoor installations by using natural materials. The purpose of this event is not only about art and aesthetics but also about delivering messages caring for the environment. Public participation also plays a part in this event. Through communication and cooperation with local communities and volunteers, artists are able to learn from local wisdom and try to blend in the local culture in their works. With the experience in the past ten years, this art event has come to a new stage by resetting its title into Guandu International Nature Art Festivalsince 2016. The triangle composed of river culture, wetland conservation, and

environmental art is still the solid foundation of the curatorial concepts. Guandu International Nature Art Festival is expected to serve as a catalyst to deepen the public's awareness of our environment, as well as care for local cultures. It is hoped that every single participant of this festival will take the initiative to connect with their surroundings, to get inspired by nature, and to make an effort in finding a way to a sustainable future.

Nature speaks to us in many ways – visually, audibly, or physically. This year, we choose the theme Based on a True Story in the hope of listening carefully to the hidden messages behind what

we perceive. It could be a warning sign or an invitation from nature itself. By exploring personally and applying first-hand information collected through field research, we aim to find more clues to understand our environment better, and to convey the messages from nature in aesthetic ways. We wish the participants can further become storytellers to reveal the true story of our own land.

Located at the junction of Tamshui River and Jilong River, Guandu Nature Park is a nature park of wetland preservation with landscape consisting of an integrated wetland environment of swamp and pond. It is a great inhabitation for a rich variety of organisms, as well as an important pass-by stop for migratory birds in their annual migration route. Hence, it has been recognized by BirdLife International as an Important

Bird Area(IBA).The park, authorized by Taipei City Government, is currently administrated under the Wild Bird Society of Taipei (WBST) and devotes care to wetland and wild birds' conservation.

This year, we choose the theme Based on a True Story in the hope of listening carefully to

the hidden messages behind what we perceive. We invite 5 groups of artists to cooperate with our

research staff devoted to the management and conservation of wetland biodiversity. With the help of our researchers, artists will first have a 10-day field study to better know the ecological, historical and cultural situations of Guandu and then choose a proper location in Guandu Nature Park to create site-specific artworks in 30 days that can enhance the public to comprehend the actual environmental situations around us.

Born 1987 in Taipei. Founded sen sense lab in 2014. For me art creation means a connection with self through reflections upon life. Time therefore unfolds in my objects. I always try to learn about my own land. Through collecting, I touch nature, internalizing what I've seen into beliefs. Through ceremonial images and installations, deadwood as well as bones speak and show emotions. The land provides nutrition to nurture our souls, and we pay it back in our own ways. Thus I keep experimenting, to find a way for my inner feelings. 20

I'm an artist based in Bermagui, a small fishing village on the East Coast of Australia. My studio, on the town's main thoroughfare, offers a direct public engagement with my practice. Here, I make

drawings, objects, portraits and illustrations for

exhibition, publication and private commission. I also coordinate an open drawing workshop, operate a popular espresso bar and work as a freelance curator. In 2016, I have also completed separate tenures as artist in residence at Nishi Gallery, Canberra, and the Casula Powerhouse, Sydney. 40

material - clay - as it makes its passage through both natural and human created from raw clays, dug from the Guandu Nature Park site and processed by hand; my first encounter with the material in its primal state. The clays are dried, soaked, sieved and massaged into a useable form, utilising sunlight, river water and tools carved from sticks and branches.

ceramic tiles and dinnerware; the material at the far end of its trajectory rest in shards of debris alongside unprocessed clays. Its trajectory evokes both the perpetual inevitability of its cycle and the fragility of our built environment; natural imperatives set against the relative impermanence of our social and cultural constructions. By exhibiting my clay sculpture unfired, I emphasise this act of ephemera. The work will quickly weather and break down, returning to its original state in the soil of the Park. In its congregation of individual forms, my works echo the distant skyline of Taipei, which, like any civilisation, will eventually succumb to the same process of collapse and recomposition. I have also been influenced by Taiwanese ghost stories, narrative sculpture in local temples, and the playful

I'm an Italian environmental artist currently living in Norway. My sitespecific sculpture and installation is created through a deep relationship with place and society. Since 2009, my practice has developed thanks to an interaction with individuals and communities. I'm a textile artist that loves to learn and share techniques and ideas. I value and utilize ancient practices, adapting them to our modern society in a critical way. I care about environmental sustainability, promoting the use of recycled and local materials, and I feed my practice with multicultural influences. My art explores the impact of human activity on the natural environment. My gesture is translated into matter, growing in volumes and modeling itself on nature. From nature, it extrapolates tension and softness. The resulting surface mirrors and suggests an instinctive knowledge of the world. 50

The art festival started as a response to its outbreak in 2005. The beautiful wetlands, that are home to many birds species, have always been a safe place. In my installation, a cluster of woven sculpture arises from the ground for people to explore and discover. Observing these shapes from a closer perspective will lead people to know more about the story behind the festival. The rich nature of the park allowed me to experiment and use local plants. Two different kinds of vines are interwoven to generate a virus. 51

Green Root Lab is an environmental art organization founded and run by artists and environmental activists Lilli

Tölp (Estonia) and Eva Bubla (Hungary). The organization deals with green art activities and was founded in order to raise environmental awareness by the language of art. Mainly it focuses on community art projects and the interdisciplinary field of art and technology. Eva and Lilli have held workshops where they built water filters and started a reforestation movement with Indonesian local communities, built puppets for shadow play from recycled materials with children, created sitespecific installations, studied bamboo weaving and building house from cow waste with local Indian communities. Their last project researched the social and ecological conditions of India, with special emphasis on farming practices. This time they focus on bringing awareness on noise pollution and bird distinction. In their works Lilli and Eva investigate and reflect on nature, the impact of urbanization, chemical farming and other commercial activities on the landscape, and the identity of natural space and related social practices 60

The volunteers have always played a crucial role by assisting in artwork production, communication, and cultural exchange during the past 10 years' Guandu art project. This year the role remained with more expectations of knowing the place through participation. 19 volunteers joined the two-day orientation in early September to build some ideas about the environment and history of Guandu. They were also invited to join the field research and local events such as lotus roots digging, community festival, and soundscape workshop, etc., and to share their

life experiences with each other in the Volunteer's Night. The volunteers have distinguished themselves as perfect helpers and ambassadors throughout the whole process of this year's art festival. The interns, corporate volunteers, and friends from the communities have contributed a lot as well.

The 2016 Guandu art project is characterized by a 10-day field research period prior to the artwork creation. A few researchers specializing in ecology and conservation were invited to share their ideas and research results with the artists. Field trip to the neighborhood areas of Guandu and Shezi also offered a chance of inspiration to see how the environment and local culture has been deeply interwoven. Moreover, the artists were encouraged to explore the energy of art in Guandu area by visiting academic as well as alternative art spaces in the neighborhood. Based on what they discovered in Guandu ecologically, historically, and culturally, the artists thus created artworks that enhance the public to comprehend the actual environmental situations around us.

Guandu Nature Park is located in a suburb of Taipei, where is a highly developed city. In order to know the impact of sound on wetland organisms, we have cooperated with Soundscape Association of Taiwan. We also have placed sound recording equipment and have monitored the change of soundscape in the reserve area in the Park.

〵抓耫兞⼿剚

What is a True Story? Is Seeing Believing? From this May, Soundscape Association of Taiwan (SAT) set up long-term sound monitoring stations in Guandu Nature Park and organized several The Sounds of Wetlands, inviting people to explore the

Park thorough listening. The sounds from the environment, nature, and tourists are all good sources.

In the workshop, tourists learned to listen and collect sounds by stopping at a spot and paying attention to the sounds around. The more they listen, the more eager they became to think about the messages conveyed through the sounds.

In response to the theme of this year's festival  Based on a True Story, the Park presented its

soundscape with an exhibition and self-guided activities, trying to combine environmental education with art events. Spectrogram made with historical audio data, special sound events, and sound maps by the tourists are on display in the exhibition. The other interesting part is the self-guided activities. After tourists follow the instructions to each sound site, they can not only draw their feelings with colors, but also listen to sounds previously collected in contrast to the real-time ones. They are able to learn more about the Park through the sounds of different seasons. Soundscape is the combination of sounds from the acoustic environment. The lecturers from Soundscape Association of Taiwan are invited to help us train volunteers to promote an understanding of soundscape. Last year, two artists were invited to create their installations on-site in Shezi for the first time. During the production, artists kept sharing how they were impressed by the beautiful landscape in Shezi and amazed by the villagers hospitality. We wonder if local residents also see Shezi as a

beautiful place as the artist. Hence, this year Guandu Nature Park has collaborated with Bamboo Curtain Studio and Shezi Aesthetics Association to run this three month long project. This project draws on the knowledge from Project WET education program that Guandu Nature Park has been promoted, and the art education from Bamboo Curtain Studio. The students will go

on a field trip and learn to observe the environment around the school through this water resources course. Furthermore, they will share what they find in the course of this project through art, and eventually the past and the present of Shezi will be presented. 91
